Best Authentic Mexican food in the area. PLUS its cheap! This review is only for the tacos, but in my experience tacos are the defining point for authenticity for a mexican joint! FOOD - We ordered the Tacos - Carne Asada, Fish, and Spicy Pork. The carne asada meat comes out in smaller pieces than expected (than the way I like it) but they give you SO much meat, heapings full! and comes with awesome cilantro which I always love and small diced white onions. Fish was delicious, fresh, and tender! Juicy and hot when it comes out. YUMS. Definitely my fav taco so far. The spicy pork was tender and definitely spicy! Not super spicy, just enough to get your mouth burning. The helpings are alot!! they definitely give you more meat per $ than any of the other taco places in Tennessee that I've been to. They give you nachos and dip first thing upon arrival. Nachos are standard, the dip is good! the salsa is a good mix of salsa and spice. I have to say that most of the other places that do serve salsa, the salsa is always mediocre and not spicy at all. i like a lil kick to my salsa, and this was definitely more than enough. ETC - Prices so cheap!!! Definitely just stick with the tacos. I got the rice and beans, and it was aites. I think monetarily it would've just been worth it to order the tacos. The place is huge! there's tons of seating area. They have jarritos and "mexican coke" as my bro calls it in the back in a fridge for you to order if you'd like. Water comes out in huge cups with a straw, I like that. Upon arrival, they just wave to you friendly and let you seat yourself during lunch. Food is fresh. service is good. CHEAP!!! Tacos are less than $2 each. Also located close to a bank of america, and my fav dessert spot: la michoacana down the street! Alot of hispanics eating while i went in, so thats always a good sign that its authentic. Highly recommended for the memphis area if you're looking for authentic mexican.

Best Mexican food in Memphis. True, authentic Mexican food that doesn't get any better. I love their vegetarian gorditas at lunch, and the Chile Poblano for dinner. My wife likes their cheese dip. I'm a fan of the hot salsas they offer, not the tomatoe sauce! Always nice to have a glass of horchata as well.

The price is fair, but what's not fair is how hard it will be to eat at other Mexican restaurants after my Guadalupana experience. So far, I have kept my ordering basic, and experimented with meats I don't know how to find elsewhere, and I have not once been disappointed.

Our last Yelp-guided trip to a Mexican restaurant did not turn out so well that my dining companion was really reluctant to try another Mexican restaurant based on my Yelp search. But neither Edo nor Lotus was open at lunch time, and we were hungry. I was delighted that their menu contains quite a few a la carte items so I didn't have to get a plate half filled with rice and beans, which I often dread. I enjoyed my Chile Relleno (could use more filling than just cheese) and Tamal (with a kick). He played it safe and ordered chorizo tacos. The chorizo was not too salty and I like it better than last time. We were disappointed by the cheese dip. It looked like milk (very runny), tasted like milk (when I had the first dip), and I was in no mood for having milk with my lunch. Fortunately it started to taste more like some kind of cheese after we stirred it up. The complimentary salsa and chips were both pretty thin and I definitely had better. The tamarind flavored water reminded me of the salty plum drink served in Vietnamese restaurants and I liked it. This pit stop (just gotta drop a racing reference on the day of Indy 500) filled up our stomachs but did not drain our wallets. I can see us back in here if we are in the area again.

Everything I have tried here has been really good! I buy from their food truck in Cordova right in from of the Cordova Framers market. I love the Goat Tostada!

I had the tacos. I ordered 4 and they came double shelled and full with fillings, which meant 8 tacos- for $8.70! The four I chose: chorizo, chicken, and 2 pastor. I loved the pastor tacos- flavorful and without gristle. The chorizo was a bit dry but still yummy and the chicken was perfectly boiled. The salsa is fresh and a standout. The chips are lacking. I'm going to try some seafood items on my next trip. I'd recommend this place and return. Fair warning, there is no alcohol and drinks are served from cans.

La Guadalupana is I one of my favorite taco shops. I haven't had much other than their tacos, but I've had just about all kinds and they're all good. The prices are very good too. I describe it as a "hole in the wall" but that's not really true - it's in a strip mall and seems pretty well known. That said, don't expect fine dining - it's a simple, authentic, Mexican taco shop. Right up my alley.

Always looking to try new places when I travel, I use Yelp. Service was very good, but carne asada taco was bland and needed salt, very disappointing. The rice was good and the refried beans were ok. I had expected better based on the positive Yelp reviews. This was one of the few cases where lots of great reviews on Yelp did not equal a great meal.

Great food! Kind staff! Reasonably priced! Authentic! The cheese dip and guacamole are must haves! Order anything from the menu and prepare to be amazed!

I have been going to this restaurant for about a couple of years now and all my meals had been great and abundant. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Awesome salsa verde, huevos rancheros, guacamole, and a great selection authentic Mexican food in the menu. My favorite are the tacos because it is not like a regular American taco. A Mexican taco is corn tortilla, meat, onion, lettuce, cilantro, and lemon juice. That's it, no cheese, sour cream, or tomato. The staff are very friendly and very easy on the pocketbook. The only reason this place did not get a 5 STAR is because they do not serve alcohol; it's BYOB. I still like my margarita or sangria when I'm eating the Best Mexican food in Memphis. Come and try it and taste what a real Mexican food taste like.

Muy sabroso! I had this little gem on my bookmark page for far too long! The elites of Memphis did not lead me astray! So yummy. I went with my family and grabbed a pastor torta. It was so delicious and so inexpensive. The bread is crusty on the outside and so light and fluffy. The pork was succulent and well seasoned. Throw on a couple other savory ingredients and a healthy slathering of mayo and I was in heaven. My son had a simple but flavorful shrimp quesadilla and my wife a fish taco. Both were good, but not as good as my torta. The interiors are clean with a few flat screens playing sports. Lots of families there enjoying lunch. The service was efficient and food came out hot and quickly. I will definitely be going back to try some more items on the menu. What a lovely find on Summer.

I knew that I was going to like this place as soon as I saw the salsa had cilantro in it. It was still wimpy but much better than anything else I've seen in Memphis. I had fish street tacos, small but tasty and served with cilantro and onions. My friend had enchiladas verde and said they were very good. The guacamole was good but not traditional. It was creamy not chunky. Service was friendly and attentive. I can't wait to try one of their burritos! They were so huge you don't know if you should spank it a name it or eat it! Lot's of space and very clean. Definitely going to make the lunch rotation. I came back the very next dat and tried the carnitas and Carne asada tacos. They were great, had to give up an extra star! Deli Mexicana has really good tacos but this place is very inexpensive. Can't wait to try their other offerings and to try their other location. Best tacos in Memphis!

Fantastic place. Love everything we have had from here. Price is definitely fair and the food is delicious. We also buy from their food truck in front of the Cordova Farmers Market and it is just as good. Everything is so fresh!! Highly recommend!

Best Mexican food in Memphis! We come here for lunch often and I've never gotten a bad meal. Best Torta that I've ever had. Burritos are great too. The Shrimp Burrito is a definite recommendation and I love their salsa. Fresh food, good service, great prices, can't beat it.

After switching from being vegetarian to being a vegan, I was afraid I would lose my fave Mexican place. But, no! I had the veggie burrito with no cheese and no sour cream and it was actually BETTER than before. Yayyyy!

  • Sara S.

The salsa had texture and great taste and also bottles of habanero sauce on the table to spice it up if needed. He had the chicken chimi and I had the shredded chicken quesadila all with beans and rice. O.M.G. my taste buds were going crazy and the flavors were so good and tasty. For my first time this place was amazing!!!

This place has great vegetarian food, especially the gorditas. It has a very authentic feel to it (not at all like the standard tex-mex fare that you will get at most mexican restaurants), the folks on the waitstaff are nice, and the prices are super.

When I read Guad had such a high rating I had to come out of Yelp retirement and speak up. First off, this place had good service and a decent (non-zoo) atmosphere. I visited last week was the first time in a few months. Off the bat, I had noticed that the menu had changed, most likely the prices and not the offerings. It just didn't seem the same deal as last time. I usually stick to the Carne Asada or some burrito of sort. I usually get an a la carte item as an app, this time it was a pollo tostada. The food was ok, not enough spice or salt or something else. Beyond the Tapatio or habenaro sauce there really wasn't much going on. The thing that really gets to me about memphis mexican in general is that most places are missing the boat with the beans and rice. Its such an afterthought to really put that stuff together but really. Its not like I'm asking for something exotic mole or nopales, this is a standard that most place I go to are really missing, detail to the sides. My tacos are usually ok, but I've turned to Elena's up the road when I want an amazing taco experience, those days have long passed at the Guad. I've always heard that Winchester Guad had the better cooks. Whatever the case, the fireworks are definitely not here.

I have a favorite place to go for authentic Mexican, and I have a favorite place to go for Americanized Mexican, and then there is Taqueria La Guadalpana. So it comes in third, that's not a horrible thing. The prices are cheap, the food is authentic - the two major things that brings this place in at number three.... 1.) It's not close to my house. 2). there are no margaritas. The food is declicious. If you go at the right time, there is basically no wait - this is one of the few places in the city I'll actually go and eat by myself. It's mostly neighborhood locals eating here..... but it is good. Really good. And what I love, I can eat here (alone) for like $6. I mean, come on - can you eat good food anywhere for $6? not really. Everyone has their own opinion of this place. Mine is what is it. The place is good. Not the BEST, but I make it a point to stop here when I'm on Summer Ave.

  • Jerry O.

To be fair and honest, every time I go I have a Burrito. I've tried all the fillings, and they are all good, not great, but good. The meats all have a bland similarity. The burrito here is huge, a full meal for me, with no sides. The chips are mediocre to good, and the salsa is just mediocre, canned tomatoes with a bit of cilantro, onion and lime juice. I do better at home. The restaurant is plain, fast food type with little decor. A tv is usually playing, but not too loud as to be obnoxious.

  • Wayne R.

It was my third time going here, but man, was I in a big surprise when I ordered the Alambres! It was a beef plate with lettuce, beans, and vegetables. In addition, there were flour tortillas to wrap it all up. I was amazed at the amount that you get! In addition, the taste was incredible! Never had I had a Mexican dish so delicious, with meat so tender and flavorful!

This place gets solid reviews on Yelp, so I'm willing to admit I'm the oddball here, so scoff away if you must. But here goes. First the positives: 1. They were open on Easter Sunday and able to take a group of 15 people 2. The portions are very generous - definitely enough to share 3. The staff is very friendly 4. The decor is nice and colorful Now the negatives: 1. The beef tongue with salsa verde was ok, but the tongue wasn't well stripped. Waaaay too many cow taste buds still stuck to it. 2. The plates were swimming with fat and other juices making for very wet servings 3. We had a chimichanga, burrito, and the beef tongue, and all of them were bland. It was a let down. Taken altogether, the price was reasonable for the portions, but not for the taste. I think we'll skip it next time.

I enjoy a 'real" taco. not the taco bell stuff. I had the tongue tacos. Ow wow. if you like beef tongue, then try it. so tender and delicious, had the tamales also. real deal here , no fake stuff.

I heard it was the best. I'll put it to the test... So, here's the thing. We're in Memphis. We miss real Mexican food every day. This satisfies a craving. I give it 4 stars by being the best I've had in Memphis so far. I hear we should go to other places but they all have names like "Toro Loco" or "Las Delicious" which are not names of places I want to go to. My rule of thumb is the place better have a very Mexican name or region in the restaurant name. Examples of the best Mexican food in the world are "Lolita's" "Roberto's" "Don Esteban's" "Cotija's" or "Cotixan's" but never "Mexican Deli" or "Fresh Mex". (Exception: Tommy's Tex-Mex in Point Loma)

  • Viet T.

OVERLY FILLED TACOS STUFFED. I got 4 tacos al a carte (though I should have went with the cheaper 2 taco lunch special) I believe I had tripe, barbacoa, and lengua. The al pastor was actually really tasty to me. Service was alright even though I got no water refill. Also apparently no alcohol (BOOOOO!!!!)

    (4)
  • Miranda L.

This is as authentic as it gets for Mexican. The food was delicious and generously portioned. Came with chips and salsa, which was good but a bit hotter than I would have liked.

    (4)
  • Roman S.

Most definitely not the best Mexican food (as another Yelper had suggested). We had four tacos - barbacoa, pastor, carnitas and another pork version. All were not very flavorful, probably been sitting there for a while, we did come on January 1 after all. Not much beyond meat on the taco, a little onion, very little tomato. For getting rave reviews from numerous Yelpers, this was a let down, definitely better places in town. Staff was very friendly, the interior wall color looked like mac and cheese, hilarious but not redeeming.

A couple of things: 1. It's BYOB for booze. This isn't a big deal, but a good thing to know before you get there. 2. Awesome location for groups. The restaurant is huge and you can move the tables together easily. 3. Definitely affordable. You can get fajitas for about $11 and a burrito for about $6. If you BYOB, you have an affordable and filling meal! 4. You won't leave here raving about the food, but you will be full and content. It's a decent place to eat and it works for the price. 5. Don't get the queso. I think it was mentioned before, but it's really runny and tastes like milk. 6. They even serve breakfast!

La Guadalupana is widely considered to be one of the best, most authentic Mexican restaurants in Memphis. It's the sort of place where the meats listed on the menu include tongue and tripe. They've won tons of "Best of Memphis" awards, and their food is the stuff of word-of-mouth legend. Even the most picky eaters among my friends know about La Guadalupana's goat tacos. So that's what I ordered - one goat taco, one chicken taco, and one spicy pork quesadilla. The tacos are very authentic - two warm corn tortillas covered in meat, cilantro, onions and lime juice. The goat was different. Really, incredibly good, but different. Goat is tender, but a little gamy (the texture is sort of like what would happen if lamb and pork were fused together). The shredded meat was a little spicy. My spicy pork quesadilla was way bigger than I thought it would be. It was stuffed with shredded savory pork, melted cheese and onions. I wish I could describe the taste a little bit better, but my notes just say "spicy pork, OMG. OMG." Taqueria La Guadalupana is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of the tacos are less than $2, and most entrees are less than $11.

  • Gary D.

Very good food - authentic and not the standard Sysco faire. Cheeses are traditional mexican. The goat was very good, as was everything I had - but, no more menuto for me! Good value for the money.

Once upon a time, I had someone say "I don't like Mexican food, it's too bland" and I had no idea how they could possibly describe Mexican food as being bland. Until I visited Taqueria La Guadalupana. I am an American, not a Mexican, and I guess I have just been spoiled by the extra flavor that Americanized Mexican food has. While I don't like overly Americanized places like On the Border and the like, I greatly prefer "almost" authentic places like La Hacienda to this place. The salsa is pretty good but the chips taste like they came from Sam's or something. The rice is excellent. But those were the most flavorless tacos I have had in a while. I have been twice, the first time I got chicken and chorizo and the second time I got fish and asada. I actually prefer soft shelled corn tortillas for my tacos but these were just so bland. I'll be honest, I do not get the raves. I'm starting to wonder if people think its "cool" to say they like this place or if they really like it. Maybe some people just like bland food and find it delicious. Not me, I'm not 85 years old yet. I still want some spice.

Buenos días amigos... skip the guacamole, and attack the tacos... it's La Taqueria Guadalupana! In what is the Hispanic epicenter of Memphis, this Summer Ave joint is big and basic. It's not the cleanest place I've been, but, well, todo es bueno. The menu is basic 'mexican' but comprehensive... so may I direct you to the bottom left area titled "Tacos." The tacos de camaron (shrimp are certainly worth), and I also enjoyed the pescado (fish). The carnitas taco, was okay, but nothing special. The Mrs. had the fajitas, and once again, nothing very special. Ultimately, this is a three star place, which as yelp describes three stars as "eh-OK," and it fits LTG just fine. Would I come again? Sure, if I'm in this part of town, and I'm hungry... but it's not a destination. Other random notes: a guy eating the torta next to us seemed to enjoy himself, the service was quick and pleasant, pay up at the counter when you're done, and for some reason the place seemed to be full of middle aged white people. ¡Olé!

It's definitely not much to look at, but Taqueria La Guadalupana is the real deal. Authentic Mexican food, not the Tex Mex variety served in many other local Mexican restaurants. Located in a strip mall on Summer Avenue, it's a wonder that I found this place. But I've found that some of the best food in this town is served in non-assuming little holes in the wall, and La Guadalupana is a prime example. Not that it's little- it's actually a really big place. I like spicy, so I tried the spicy pork quesadilla. Talk about melt in your mouth. The serving was huge, but I think I managed to clean my plate. I've also had the tacos, and the white cheese dip-- some of the best food I've ever had in my life. The servers don't speak a lot of English, but they are polite and quick. I've found that the language barrier is no problem as "yum," "ummm," and "wow" are generally recognized worldwide. Skip the glitz, people, and go for the goat (I wasn't brave enough but maybe you will be).

This was the second stop on the Taco tour and I thought they had the best tacos. I was informed this place used to be a food truck and I was happy to hear that it was a sit down restaurant. When me and my friend entered, we were greeted by two of the nicest servers/cashiers. I ordered the steak and chorizo tacos and I thought they were fantastic. I've never eaten a chorizo taco and it was amazing, so yummy! The cost of the tacos were $1.99 a piece. They take both cash and credit and the restaurant was really cute. I only gave them four star as I ordered my tacos to go. However, I can't wait to try the rest of their menu and dine in.

I waited until my second visit to review to be sure of consistently good service. The first visit I walked in around 2 on a busy weekday. I looked over the menu and placed my order. I had heard from a friend that their burritos were the best, so that's what I had. The burritos have a choice have meats (steak, pork, chicken, shrimp, and a few other cuts I wasn't too familiar with). Each hand rolled burruro is filled with queso blanco, onions, cilantro (there is a cilantro ban right now so i asked the cashier. He advised it's from Chicago), tomatoes, in house made refried beans and a choice of other fillings each at extra cost. I added rice to mine. I sat at a table while I waited for my order and observed the other activity in the restaurant. The patrons all seemed to enjoy their food which looked delicious. I have to try something new when I have time to dine in. The servers scurried about taking delivering orders to tables and cleaning newly vacant ones. I liked the fact that the floor and tables were receiving constant cleaning. My order of four burritos took about 10 - 15 minutes. I paid for the food upon delivery. Cool. The Taste: After warming my burrito in the microwave at home, I bit into one of the best burritos I have ever had. The steak was tender and juicy. The right amount of cheese. Homemade beans make a huge difference. They were flavorful and cooked to the right tenderness. I love rice but rarely find rice cooked properly. The rice was cooked right but only added texture to the mix. Everything worked together well though. My only hang ups were that I had to ask for sauces, one of my burritos was cold (despite the fact they were each wrapped in parchment and foil) , and they were placed in a flimsy plastic bag that caused them to smoosh together. My second visit was a call in order. I saw my burritos placed in the order window right as I walked in. All burritos were hot this time. Maybe because it was about 45 minutes before closing. Which Aldo could account for a lot of dirty tables. Overall, I like this place and will be back. Preferably around lunch.

The food had a great flavor. However, the quality of the meat is very questionable. I ordered the lunch fajitas (chicken & steak) and to be quite honest, I'm still not exactly sure what type of meat they served me. 80% of the meat strips were tasty the other 20% were like eating well seasoned strips of rubber. You could chew and chew but the meat wouldn't breakdown. Eventually you just had to swallow it. Lol I'm still confused how mystery meat tasted so good.

The more that I eat here, the more I realize how good the food really is in different ways. My initial review 3 years ago was a 3 star but I think maybe that was just due to my lack of experience authentic Mexican food. This place is a solid 4 star and that is with service, freshness, and keeping it real. I have never had a bad meal and if you want authentic, look no further.

Pretty good mexican food, very authentic as far as I can tell. Been here several times, but nothing has really blown me away. Could be that I'm not picking the right dishes. Also, not alcohol served which is a shame, always do like a refreshing cervesa. All in all decent place, but definitely not one of my favorites.

Great tacos! Best in Memphis. As a native Californian this means a lot. The beans and rice were good too. The restaurant is clean and colorful and our waitress was super nice and speedy.

Very friendly staff but my tacos looked nothing like the ones I saw posted. Maybe because I ordered the veggie ones? Drenched in white sauce a la Tex-Mex. I am a fan of Baja Mexican, not the other stuff.

Finally! A good taco in Memphis! If you're looking for good authentic Mexican tacos, this taqueria is the place, amigos. This is the 7th Mexican restaurant I've been to in Memphis, and so far they win the prize for best tacos, in my opinion. I tried the chorizo, al pastor, and carne asada. The chorizo was excellent--great flavor and texture, while not being too greasy. The al pastor was very good, very flavorful. The carne asada was good but I think it would have benefitted from a more interesting salsa than the basic mild tomato salsa that was served with the chips. Of the three meats, I recommend the chorizo. The beans were good, the chips and salsa and guacamole were just okay, not great-- important to know going in. They have an extensive menu which includes seafood, and traditional regional items such as posole, which I will definitely be returning to try.

Wow, what an incredible place!! Went with Srishti and the Husbands and we were seriously blown away. My husband had been before and said that we had to try it out. I usually don't listen to him, but he scored points with this one :) Great casual ambiance, very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The silverware even comes in individual packages! OMG THE SALSAS!!! Right when we sat down we were greeted with fresh chips and 2 beautiful salsas-a classic Mexican style and a creamy salsa verde (tasted like tomatillo + avocado). Definitely the best salsas I have ever had. Perfectly spicy and addictive. I wish they bottled the salsa verde, I could eat it every day! We all decided to order taco meals (2 tacos with rice and beans). The chorizo taco is incredible, great flavor and spice. The chicken was good as well, but nothing compared to the chorizo. The rice was delicious and the beans were creamy. Also the beans are vegetarian, wow! So happy we found this place!!

This place is the REAL DEAL. We were out to eat Indian, when suddenly one friend suggested we try this place and m so glad we listened to him. I and my husband usually go to the taco truck on Summer and Taquira is right there. It's not a fancy place, just a simple authentic real Mexican restaurant: the best in Memphis I can say. They give red and green salsa to start with. The green salsa is out of this world. I can go again only to eat that salsa: it's that's good. And they have those flavored Mexican sodas too!! We started with chicken tamales, I had never had tamales before, so I do not have a reference to compare it with. But still I would say 'twas pretty good. Within 15 minutes of us being there, the place was getting swarmed with Mexican people. You know it's an authentic Mexican place, when its full of Mexican families having a seemingly amazing meal. Then came the tacos. I took a taco meal with one chicken and one chorizo taco. Oh the chorizo taco: I am salivating while writing about them: Sooooo good. Just perfect. My husband's veggie tacos were pretty good too. Their Spanish rice are very flavorful as well. And the best part is it is so light on your pocket. 36$ for a dinner of four. And trust me we had so much food. I can't wait to go to this place again. Love it!!

A friend had recommended that I try them out, so my wife and I went for lunch recently. I had the Carne Azada and my wife had the Chilequilles. Most of my steak was very tender, well-seasoned and the rice was nicely cooked. The Chilequilles was a bit spicy-hot, but she enjoyed it. I may have to go back to try some of the other dishes, but for my first visit it wasn't bad. Not only was the food good, but I was also impressed with how clean everything was - the restaurant and the bathrooms were both well maintained.

This is a really good authentic Mexican place to come eat some good tacos. I'm Mexican, so I do go for the tri pitas, Barbacoa and all the items most Americans thing are disgusting . I like the selection of ingredients they have, for instance, I like their cheese for the quesadillas . Good flavors, good food, jot the place it's not pretty or inviting, but I can see pass that to get my Mexican fix . This place, just like La Michoacana makes me happy being so far from my dear Mexico.

This is usually excellent food, I sit-in and order take-out from here, it's fast, always good quality, and reasonable prices. I've tried many different dishes, they are all good. This is more like a cafe where you will find different types of people all coming together, from all walks of life, it's an interesting atmosphere, and it works really well. Definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants in Memphis, but more of a family feel, not a romantic restaurant feel!

Salsa was good, tacos were bland... Not a lot of flavor in the meat and found a bone in my carnitas taco... They look amazing, but it was a huge disappointment on flavor. They don't serve alcohol. Wait staff was nice and attentive. I won't be coming back. Not sure what all the rave reviews are about.

Guadalupana has the best food. It is hands down the best place to get Mexican food, and we go there at least once a week. The food is affordable, and really tasty. The staff is great. It is a casual place that does not serve alcohol. But that's one of the reasons I like it so much - the customers can't get drunk and obnoxious. I recommend Guadalupana to everyone. The Alambres is a great dish, and I love the enchiladas and tacos too.

This place is amazing! Firstly, the staff is friendly, efficient and swift. Secondly, this is the place in Memphis to get great authentic Mexican cuisine. The salsa is fresh and delicious. The tacos al carbon and the carne asada are my favorites. No margaritas at this joint but well worth the visit. If you want a great authentic meal, this is the place.

Good - but not great meal. Overall lunch was OK. I really love Mexican food, especially Baha style Mex. Always on the prowl for the perfect burrito, namely carne asada, chock full of cilantro, onions, lime and marinated steak. Tried the steak burrito here, it was on the dry side and not seasoned very well. The pork burrito was dripping in grease and made me feel a bit sick. The chicken in the fajitas was all gristle and also very greasy. Really looked forward to eating here, but don't think I will go back based on this experience. .

La Guadalupana might be the closest we'll get to real Mexican food in Memphis, and many menu items are really perfect! The alambres and flautas, the tacos. You'll want to take a bath in the salsa verde! Sometimes the best places to eat are a little divey, and so La Guadalupana is. But if you appreciate great food over swanky atmosphere, then you're good. Tip: they also have a food truck, which can often be found by the Cordova Int'l Farmer's Market on weekends.

If you want large portions of excellent authentic Mexican food, this is the place! The best thing is it won't break the bank. When they ask you what you want to drink, tell them you want a "melon" and enjoy!

Looks like a hole in the wall but the food is top notch! Tried all their tacos and have to say loved all if them. Don't get grossed out when you read goat tongue, it's one of the best tacos on the menu!

While every other Mexican and Tex Mex restaurant were absolutely slammed for Cinqo De Mayo, We ventured to this place to grab some quality food. They delivered. The service was friendly and the food was flavorful. This little gem should be tried.

I've got a dirty secret...it's shameful and I try to keep it to myself mostly...I lived on the west coast for quite awhile. I spent a lot of time in the San Diego, and LA area...and absolutely absorbed as much Mexican food from all sources as possible. That being said, I've been on a hunt since I got back to find places that actually remind me of the food I had while I was out there...and while I see a few bad reviews towards the bottom that weren't happy with what they got...I'm really inclined to believe they haven't had an authentic Mexican experience. This place nails it, I always get the barbacoa which here means goat, and it is excellent. The burritos are incredible, but really everything I've ever had here is wonderful. My friends love the place, my girlfriend who is not only pregnant, but also vegan loves the place...and I can feed 3 of us for less than 25 bucks...that's incredible considering I walk out full, and happy. Very flavorful, very affordable, and a fun place to go and eat. Sometimes the waiters/waitresses aren't the best with service. I'm not sure if it is due to a atmosphere in the place because I've seen the lack of hurry or concern in a lot of the staff there...but they aren't absolutely horrible. Go in here and have fun, try to venture away from tacos and ignore all of us that have set expectations for you. However, for my buck, this place gets me the closest to the roach coaches I used to eat at on the side of the road out in CA.

I'm not that familiar with Mexican establishments in Memphis, so this review is in comparison to Mexican places all over the place. That all being said, the food here is pretty good. I was initially warned that the decor was lacking, but to me it was similar to any of the Mexican restaurants near me in Brooklyn, except about five times larger. Heh. The food was good though. Cheap, tasty tacos. A solid hurrache. The goat was a little bit on the gamey side. And while good, the hurrache had a bit too much cheese. But all together solid. I would have no problem if this were my local place to grab Mexican. Service was prompt, and kind. The glasses of water they give are *huge*. And the green sauce packs a nice little kick.

If you want authentic Mexican this is it! No ambience here, just great Mexican food off the beaten path that only the locals know about. This restaurant is located in a strip center on Summer Avenue. They serve no alcohol, only Mexican soft drinks where you can serve yourself. Our favorite is the goat and tongue tacos. The goat, tripe, or tongue burritos or tortas are also a very good choice. The location on Winchester has a DJ which gets hopping later in the evening. If you visit this location you will likely be the only non hispanic in the joint. We crave this food and have to head to one of these two locations frequently. I love these type of restaurants off the beaten path and many times in tough areas around Memphis

The best Mexican food I've had in Memphis. Hands down. The ambiance is very unassuming. Just a room with tables and chairs, but really, you arent coming here for the ambiance. I've had chicken flautas here, as well as a burrito with chorizo. The chorizo is phenomenal. The portions of food are perfectly sized; although, the burrito was pretty big, but I took the other half home with me. The guacamole has to be my favorite part. It's delicious. Last time we went, I also discovered they make their own fruit sodas. We tried the tamarind, and it was good... Not too sweet. I can't say enough good things about this place. One of those best kept secret places... Love it!

This food is amazing!!! They give you lots of meat & the food is very fresh! The atmosphere is comfortable enough to dine in & the staff is very friendly. I'm originally from Arizona, so this is about the closest you can get to having great authentic Mexican food. The prices are fair especially for someone like myself whose on a strict budget!! =)

Located on Summer Avenue at Mendenhall near the old Market Basket. This is very very authentic but also very no frills. It's big and open and feels like a school cafeteria almost. But don't let the aesthetics fool you. The grub is awesome! And it's also very cheap. Everything I have ever tried there is great but I think one of my favorites is the fajitas. Tip: They don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own if you'd like.

From the front of this place you might think twice about stopping in - but if you decide to, you'll be thanking Jesus (Hay-Zeus) you did. Many of my favorite places to eat are "hole in the wall" or "mom & pop" places- not much to the eye, but a lot of authentic food. Being from San Diego - Mexican food is as big of a staple in my life and hamburgers are to the average American. With that being said- I'm a pretty harsh critic as well. This was def hands down the best Mexican in Memphis!! My husband and I frequented this place as much as possible. I was a big fan or their carne asada tacos and their pollo asada as well. The beans are good, rice is good, and the salsa is too (although some days the salsa was better than others). Sadly, this will most likely be one of the places I'll miss in Memphis - but considering my hubby and I are moving back to California- I think I'll get over it ;)

From a Mexican food snob from so cal who has had a lot of authentic Mexican. This place cures my cravings! The simple Mexican favorites are close to perfect (tacos and burritos). I don't need to elaborate. And just so you know, Los Tortugas is really good! but may only be authentic Mexican from Mexico city if you are a very wealthy person living the mexican high life... Which most people are not. That is why you see no Mexican paying the outrageous prices there. It's because they are all eating at taquerias like El Palmar and La Guadalupana.

I have family from Mexico and have been to Mexico, not the tourist trap cities REAL mexico where no one speaks English except for the kids, and this is the most authentic it gets in this city. Pretty much anytime you go in you can see many hispanic customers in the place if that is any indication of the legitimacy of the food. Really cant go wrong with anything off the menu. The tortas are pretty amazing and well as their verde sauce. The best verde sauce, the green kind, I've ever had personally including being out in California. If you have never been and want to give a more authentic mexican food a try you should give it a shot. Also the food is reasonably priced. Downside is there is not a full bar and I'm not even sure they serve beer.

Not sure what happened the day I went but it was mediocre at best. I would try again based on reviews, but it would need to be a substantial improvement for me to go past that. Everything was overcooked and had no taste. The prior reviews seemed rigged if you ask me.

The food is ok but i've had better. The service os poor. You will be greeted promptly and your order taken in ample time but it ends there. If you order soda it come in the can with a glass and just enough ice to be gone by the time you have poured your coke over it. Then after all the poor service you will to stand at the register and wait to pay.

Great Mexican food with fresh ingredients. The service is a little slow but it was worth if. Just so you know, you don't wait on your ticket. Just go to the register to pay. We had chimichangas, enchiladas with verde sauce, chicken quesadillas and pork burrito. Plus we were brave (well two of the four) and tried the tongue taco. Very good. Tasted like beef roast.

Over drinks, James, my step-sister's boyfriend, mentioned "We have good tacos." Which prompted me to ask "Yeah? What's on them? Don't tell me sour cream and cheese." "No," he replied. "Just onions and cilantro... and the best salsa verde on Earth." "I want to go to there," I intoned in my best Liz Lemon voice. And go there I did. The next afternoon we piled into his car (driving for tacos, how novel!) and drove out to a strip-mall on Summer Ave. I was warned of the decor (slightly shabby) but it looked just like the taquerias in Sunset Park: pale turquoise walls, Mexican decor, metal chairs, large juxebox, etc. However, this was at least 10 times larger (Adam R. is under-remembering the size of this place). The salsa verde was delicious with a good punch of heat, which paired well with the massive cups of water we were given. Though I was tempted by the burrito (How could I not be?), I was there for tacos so I got a carne asada, pollo, and carnitas. My favorite was (and often is) the pollo, which was flavorful and moist. The carnitas was on the dry side and the carne asada had an interesting texture. It wasn't ground beef, but it wasn't strip steak either; tasty nonetheless.

we have a couple of La Guadalupe's in the Jackson, MS metro area. I want to clarify something to people - burritos are not supposed to be slathered in cheese and tacos are supposed to be accompanied with lime's, cilantro and onion for dressing - with a chili verde for sauce. In Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama - most of the big mexican restaurants are serving you Tex-Mex food - that is basically Americanized mexican food. This is pure authentic mexican! You can't go wrong going to a a La Guadalupe - Gordon P. said it best, this is where the latino people go to eat! Period!

Some of the best chip's and salsa I've had in Memphis. The hurrache's are an experience not to be missed. The goat should be reserved for the adventurous type. Food is cheap, service is friendly and the vibe is laid back. Rice and beans are mediocre and not worth ordering ala carte. Stick to the other menus items and you'll get your fill on without breaking the bank Worth checking this place out if you are looking for some good Mexican grub in and around Memphis.

looks like i'm adding to the long line of uberlikers. wasn't too awful hard to convince me. if you want tex/mex food chain quality with 22 oz. margaritas dripping condensation on your shirt, stay away. if you want genuine wholesome, tasty mexican food prepared for mexicans, this is the place. everything was great, from the white cheese dip, salsa, guacamole, shrimp in garlic, everything. this place sated my 2 month long jones for mexican food superbly. nuff said.

Oh. My. Goodness. THE best Mexican food I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I came here today, alone for lunch, because I'd heard so much from the whining & dining crowd from the Commercial Appeal blog. My fiance is a little squeamish about new culinary experiences, so I thought I'd scout this place out first. It was PHENOMINAL!!! I got the chicken enchilada lunch w/verde sauce and it was so fresh tasting! The tomatillos were fresh, fresh, fresh...like nothing I've had before. Very tangy and yummy. The rice had a hint of lime and was also very good. I totally loved everything. This is a no frills place, but the food needs no frills. You know it is a good, authentic restaurant when most of the patrons are hispanic!! And did I mention that they serve chilaquiles for breakfast? I can not WAIT to try that! (drooling already)

Took the husband back here on my word that I would try it again this week. Meh. Just meh. This time I tried a large variety of items- we ordered the guacamole, a steak sope, steak burrito, chicken tamale and small shrimp quesadilla. Guadalupana gets the additional star for the steak sope- and only the steak sope. It was delightful. The shell was crispy on the outside, soft, corny goodness on the inside and the steak and toppings were perfection. The guacamole had an okay flavor to it, but the texture was just not for me, I prefer mine chunky and this was almost pureed in texture. The steak burrito was soggy, and we both thought it was lacking. The tamale was okay, but we both agreed that the ratio of corn meal to chicken was off and they could afford a bit more chicken. The shrimp quesadilla was horrendous. Those blasted melted Kraft singles from my enchiladas the other day mysteriously found their way into this menu item as well. Which leads me to this- any item on Guadalupana's menu with melted cheese inside of it should be avoided at all cost. My final word on the subject? Would I come back here on my own? No. Would I come here if someone really wanted me to? Probably, I'd just stick with the sopes.

The BEST and most authentic Mexican food in Memphis. True, its in a strip mall and overly lit. But what it lacks in atmosphere, in makes up in food quality and value. Any given day, you'll see Mexican families and construction workers, next to midtown types. Try the Camarones de Diablo, if you're adventurous-it is SPICY (and I like spicy) or the Carne Asada Burrito and have the white cheese dip. They don't serve beer or wine, but I believe that they allow you to bring your own. I took a friend that grew up in So Cal and she marveled that they served 'orchata' drinks. Service is friendly, but the servers seem shy and once your order is made-its unlikely you 'll see your server, until she brings the check, which you pay at the register (my 1st time I waited for almost 20 min, with credit card in hand to pay).

Seriously authentic Mexican in a Summer Avenue strip mall in Memphis. Emphasis on meat: goat, tongue, beef, pork and tripe (!), although there are a few veggie options. Cheap, too, and real friendly service.

I've only been to Taqueria La Guadalupana (hard to spell...) once, so I cannot say that I love it or hate it yet. I have had three items from their menu, and I plan to return to try others before making a final judgement. From my first visit, it was promising. There are two things i generally use to judge a Mexican food place, the kind and quality of meats they serve. It may seem odd, but I've found that the best mexican restaurants align themselves to this general rubric. Taqueria Guadalupana serves a wide variety of meats ranging from the familiar steak to the exotic tongue. They even serve milanesa, fried steak, that I honestly was surprised to see on the menu. On my first visit, I decided to focus on the quality of their tortas. Their milanesa torta is a little simplistic but more authentic than anything else I've tried in Memphis. The milanesa itself is very good, but they serve it sparingly, and I was somewhat disappointed when I would come up meatless every few bites. Their torta is not served on the traditional bolillo firm bread. Instead it is served on a soft white bread that tasted somewhat sweet. They also do not seem to use a sandwich iron for their tortas which in my experience is one of the defining features of the dish. Their torta is served with an avocado half sliced into pieces, mayonnaise, and lettuce. What was missing in the torta, in my opinion, was refried bean paste, oaxaca (a string cheese like cheese), and tomatoes. The milanesa was the saving grace of this sandwich. It was flavorful, crisp, and perfectly tenderized. It is possible they were a little stingy with their meat due to the current economic condition, so I do not begrudge them this point. I ordered a glass of horchata which was perfect, sickeningly sweet, with a strong cinnamon aftertaste, a nutty finish, and a creamy texture. The bottom of the glass was coated with cinnamon after I finished driking it, a good sign of any quality horchata. Their chicken tamale was quite good. I couldn't find anything disappointing about it -- moist and rich. Their carnitas taco is very good. It nearly melts in your mouth. The carnitas are stewed so well that they are so tender they dissolve when they hit your tongue. The flavor is not especially salty as with some carnitas preparation, so you can really taste the quality of the meat. I would recommend anyone with a little bit of cash in their pocket to give Taqueria La Guadalupana a try. It is the most authentic Mexican food I've had in Memphis and is also very tasty. The storefront may not seem so appealing but it is a nice diner with plenty of tasty, inexpensive dishes to try. Be sure to order a horchata when you go.

The food it's self deserves 5 stars. It's wonderful, filling, and cheap. The food always seems fresh and they offer many ingredients and types of food that many Mexican establishments in Memphis do not offer. The interior pretty much sucks however. It feels like eating in your high school cafeteria (if your high school cafeteria played hispanic soap operas). They do have real cokes and homemade fruit juices which are wonderful, however they don't have beer, wine, or liquor. I've seen groups that have brought their own.

Best authentic Mexican food in Memphis. Try the tortas, burritos, tacos, etc. They're all good with plenty of options for fillings including barbacoa (goat) and lingua (tongue) for the brave! Also the salsa verde will have you coming back for more. A true Memphis gem.

This is the best Mexican food I have had in Memphis and some of the best I have had period. It's family fare, don't expect people in a jacket to seat and then serve you - but this is a restaurant you will come back to again and again. They serve real Mexican Coca Cola and have a straight forward menu. The Mexican Chorizo is quite good and I get it most of the time I go. I'm not sure you can feed a family of three for less either. Give it a try.

the best mexican food in memphis. had the carne asada tacos and large horchata drink. the place is a hole in the wall with no frills interior but the food is great. the service was good also the server came to us a few times after we received our food to check up on us.

This place has horrible, strip mall ambience (it's in a strip mall on Summer Ave. after all) complete with Spanish language soap operas and fluorescent lighting. Most of the food is good, though. And I know it's authentic since most of the time half the clientelle is Hispanic. And although they have quite a unique selection of Mexican drinks (by the bottle), there's no alcohol served.

I've gone here twice now trying to find out what was so great about it. Today was definitely the best food I've had there! I had the asada tostada and it was great and the carnitas tacos were pretty good.

I've just discovered this place and it's quickly become my new favorite Mexican fix. Strip mall location, but very clean inside. The White Cheese Dip is a big rec: warm and tasty. The Carne Asada and the enchiladas are also favorites. The servers are nice and no, their first language is not English, but it's not hard to communicate. They also know the menu cold and will start writing before you've finished trying to pronounce your order. You also have to go to the counter for your bill after the meal, but other than a few of these minor inconveniences, you will not find better Mexican in Memphis.

  • Jonathan J.

Simply the best in Memphis. They have at least three locations and they're all wonderful. Traditional, simple, and delicious. Try the Cornish game hen in salsa verde, the enchiladas are also top notch. Is it classy? Not at all. It reminds me of a school cafeteria, in a way. No decor, seat-yourself kinda place. And... cheap. :)

I constantly extol the virtues of Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana on Germantown Parkway near my old work location. Our new location makes that beloved restaurant a bit far for lunch now, and when I have had the craving for authentic Mexican food I have been out of luck. Not so, says my friend, and directs me to La Guadalupana (a mere 10 minutes from work on Summer Ave). I went there last week, and I have to say that it was an excellent experience. While not on the same level, quality-wise, as Las Tortugas, there is a wide variety of tasty food available. The salsa is fresh and chunky, and some of the best I have had in a local restaurant. A huge plus is all of the types of meat available, from beef to tongue to goat and beyond. The menu is huge and there are a large number of authentic dishes in addition to things like burritos and fajitas. Their a la carte items are plentiful and inexpensive, and it would be very easy to eat for less than ten dollars. I opted for the Pastor (spicy pork) burrito dinner, and the burrito was huge and delicious. The rice and beans were hearty and fresh, and I could not finish my meal. I have to say as well that the white cheese dip was one of the best I have ever had. The service was fast, the dining room is big (no wait to sit), and we were able to get in and out quickly. I would say that the main negative aspect is that there are no free refills on any beverages except for water. There is no sweet tea, and coke is available per glass, by can, or for two dollars a bottle (for the good Mexican coke). They also have a variety of Mexican beverages available. I have to say, though, it was worth two dollars to get to enjoy a tasty Mexican coke with my awesome burrito. I also recommend the melon water. Amazing.

this is the best mexican food i have ever eaten in my life. i like the asada burrito, asada chimichanga, sopes, and cheesedip... not all at the same time but just some good ideas to get you started. ordering special requests could be a problem because of the language barrier, but for somebody like me that eats food the way it is served, i have never really had a problem. if you are looking for boring americanized mexican food, go across the street to poncho's (at your own risk). La Guadalupana may not look like much, but don't let that stop you from enjoying their wonderful food

I've been around a lot of Mexican food. This is simple, and very good. The waitresses are very nice, with limited English- which matters little. The burritos are huge, cheap, and great. The spicy pork is recommended. My wife always gets the tasty and cheap sopes. The whole fried fish is nice. There is no alcohol, but you can bring beer. On the other hand, the melon drinks are huge and wonderful. The place is often full of Mexican construction workers. You'll not find them at the Happy Mexican.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
