Very disappointed in the service. I wanted to like this place because the food was good. I don't think they will be in buisness very long. Very dishonest, server ran my credit card multiple times!!!!! It wasn't until I got to my car and checked on line that I saw multiple charges to my account. I confronted staff and they said "don't worry about, I didn't think I should tell you? ??" Owner didn't even attempt to satisfy me as a customer. My advice is to find another place to spend your money.

Went with my 16 month old nephew and they didn't have high chairs. Do not recommend if you have a baby or small children. I left without trying their food or drinks. The decor left a lot to be desired. Tables have to be shared with other people when they are busy.

A unique new addition to the Midtown area. I am not a huge fan of sausage, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the sausage here! The waiter was helpful and swift. I also really liked the community seating indoors and outdoors.

The Schweinehaus is more of a bar than it is a German restaurant. I am new to the area and was thrilled to find a German Restaurant, one can only eat so much BBQ. As far as a bar they have a large variety of Beers, including many German Beers. The food on the other hand was marginal. I have been to Germany many times and where I do not expect authentic German Cuisine in the US the food was to even close. The Brezel (Soft Pretzel) was not fresh and tasted just like the Super Pretzel Brand you can buy in the grocery store. On the wurst platter, the sausages were over grilled giving more of a smokey taste than traditional German Wursts. The sauerkraut was good but served cold and seems to come right out of a package, a little beef broth and heat would have made it better. German Rotkraut is usually colored red and sweetened with black currents, here they completely covered the sweetness with vinegar and mustard seeds. The German Potato salad was really just smashed red potatoes with vinegar and mustard seed. Maybe if they called it German Mashed Potatoes it would at least tell you what to expect but when you have had traditional German Potato Salad it left me wanting more. The potato pancakes were very thick and a little greasy and they added toast points which really serve no purpose. I understand that people have many different recipes for dishes, and have been surprised a number of times in Germany because the dishes were slightly different but they all seemed to be at least close, here they were nothing like I have had. The shining point of the meal was the Ice Cream Sandwich, it was made fresh and very good. Overall not bad but also not German. I would change the name to Beer house bar and stop setting the expectation of German Restaurant.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. This place is a great addition to Overton Square. Tried a variety of things off the menu and everything was delicious. The staff was so friendly and helpful! Do yourself a favor and go to Schweinehaus. I will definitely be back!

Great addition to the Square, nice to have a German restaurant. Let me say at the outset that I can echo a lot of reviews in regards to the prices, it's just a little more expensive than you think. Don't let that keep you away, it just might keep it harder to keep in a regular rotation, especially if you have a small child, as there are no kids items. The food is pretty good tho, the chicken schnitzel and meatball sandwich were well prepared and flavorful. The pretzel crusted cod appetizer is a great start, and surprisingly, the hamburger is legit, one of the best I've tasted in a while. And there's beer. There's most definitely beer. I love a German dunkel, and it's served in a nice dimpled German mug...at $15 a liter. Bit pricey, but man that's a good beer. Small caveat, I went early (as I tend to do in these days with a toddler) so we were able to have our own table to ourselves. Be forewarned, there is an excellent chance you'll have to share a table. Not that it's a bad thing, just an FYI.

So. Mr.B and I Ate here for a beer and dessert. The Root Beer Cookie sandwich is out of this world! It is an actual ice cream sandwich with root beer gelato and white chocolate chip cookies. Seriously, it's an ice Cream sandwich on a menu. And it's practically perfect!

We dropped in on Sunday evening after watching a concert at the Levitt Shell and were very pleased with the food and drink. My girlfriend ordered the mac and cheese and the fried brussel sprouts. The sprouts were about what I expected and very similar to what we make at home. The mac and cheese, however... Holy smokes is it good. Lots of cheese, some earthy flavors. It really sticks to your fork. Our other guest ordered the brisket. It was tender and looked really good. I ordered the jagerschitzel. Plenty of flavor. HUGE portion. It was enough to feed me for supper and lunch the following day. It was served with kraut, mashed potatoes, and a mushroom sauce. Again, plenty of flavor. It was clear that the potatoes were made fresh and not from a powder. Pricewise, we'll have to plan to visit, as an appetizer, drinks, and entrees are a little out of our "drop in because we don't want to clean up after supper" budget, but it's a great location with great people-watching vantage points. We're definitely coming back.

I've only been here once and I enjoyed it. It's pricier than I would like, which means I won't go there often, but I will definitely go back.

We visited the new German-themed restaurant on Overton Square this past weekend and were disappointed. The communal seating consisting of picnic tables with long benches and the room-temperature beer were about the only thing that reminds one of a true hofbrauhaus in Bavaria. There is minimal decor to suggest an atmosphere of a hearty German beer hall and the food was sub-par prompting me to giving this eatery a thumbs down, I had the Sauerbraten with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The Sauerbraten was covered in a barbeque sauce, yuk. My girlfriend, at the waitress' suggestion, had a pulled pork rueben on rye with saurkraut and barbeque sauce. The sauce was overly sweet, the sandwich fell apart facilitating the need to eat it with knife and fork, leaving the french fries as the best part of the meal. We had been anxious to try this restaurant, but won't be back. Grawmeyer's in downtown Memphis is a better choice for a delicious German meal.

Went to checkout after reading the restaurant had just opened. If you remember Erika's downtown a few years back, this is KFC. Ordered Schnitzel Pork and got Chicken. $17.00 entrée. Ask for substitution on accompanying sides, and the waitress told me that they were not substituting sides that night. She said she would try and did receive the sides I asked for. The food was horrible. Vegetables grey and mushy, the chicken a tough piece with crispy coating and a dribble of sauce on top. No bread, salad available or included. Nice German beer hall atmosphere and probably good beer, but food, not a reason to go. $17.00 entrée, I expect a little bit of quality. The Germans would not approve. Quality?

Last night, the husband and I decided to give this place a try. I spent three years of my childhood in Germany, so I'm familiar with communal beer and sausage tents. If you are uncomfortable sitting with strangers, you won't enjoy dining here. I felt the tables were too small to be communal...not enough room to spread out. And I'm very shy, so was feeling anxious the entire time. My husband complained that the beer prices will eventually become a deterrent after the newness wears off because you can get the same beers cheaper at most places around Memphis. I will say the food was good. We shared the pretzel appetizer, the wurst platter and a side of mac and cheese. All very tasty, rich and filling. We took home half the platter. The place was packed and so loud we couldn't carry on a conversation. I couldn't even hear the music that other reviewers mentioned. So beer=too expensive, food=tasty and well portioned, atmosphere=cramped and obnoxious.

  • Malcolm C.

I like the atmosphere. We walked up and the patio was filled with people drinking the big steins of beer. The beer selection was good. The menu was difficult to get a handle on. We ordered the sausages as an appetizer. They were good but it was short on sausage and heavy on sauerkraut and cabbage. No one cared much for the food. Three of us ordered the Reuben made with pork. If was smothered with this sweet bar-b-cue sauce that ruined the sandwich in my opinion. One bite and I was done with it. Another person commented that he thought he was getting a reuben sandwich. I suggested to the waitress that they put the barbecue sauce on the side and offer mustard as well so someone could dress it as they wished. The waitress agreed. Seems common sense, wonder why they haven't been doing it all along? My wife ordered a salad, and it was nothing but lettuce and a few tomatoes. Over priced and not very good. Don't think we will be going back.

I came in for the first time tonight and it was great. The German beer selection was phenomenal and my pork chop was delicious. I just wish they had some kind of pretty German plate to put my food on.

I admit I am biased- I lived in Germany 9 years and I miss it. Any place that gets close to replicating the German experience will get a high mark from me- this place does. The food and atmosphere is similar to a typical Bavarian pub but with a Memphis twist. We've eaten there 3 times- every Saturday for the past 3 weeks. We will go again. The food is good enough, the service is fine, and the beer selection is nice and very German. So far I have always gotten Jaeger Schnitzel- that's a schnitzel covered in a nice mushroom gravy. I ate it often in Germany, too, and this Memphis schnitzel is pretty good- not the best I have ever had, but it is tasty and filling and it makes me think of Germany. My wife has eaten different things each time and has liked them all, but so far her favorite item has also been the Jaeger Schnitzel. And I like hearing the German fest music that sometimes (but not always) is playing in the background. I almost got up and did the Duck Dance yesterday but I hadn't had quite enough beer so I remained seated. Maybe next time I visit I will dance...

Well it's my bday tomorrow and we leaving town on Sunday. Hubby knows I like German food( since I grew up there). We only had the rental car till morning to tonite was his treat! We had to have an order of Brussels.. Omg thought my tongue wood melt with that fabulous flavor!!! We snarrfed! Then the Ribbchen (pork chop) came with more Brussel Sprouts and purreed potatoes. Delectable feast!! And I wasn't all that hungry. I do have a few left overs for hubby in morning glad I did miss this place. We would have never got our big Trk in here anywhere!! Till next time. Love this place! Definitely can't wait to come back in the cooler months to sit outside as well. My husband and I stopped off here for a quick lunch on Thursday afternoon around 11:30am and the place was completely dead! They have a killer draft list and great food - we ordered what the bartender suggested. First we started off with the sauerkraut balls, which were complimented by apple butter... I was blown away. Usually I try to shy away from ordering too much fried foods but this was a must and will continue to order in the future. Then, we agreed on the Wurst Platter, having our choice of 4 sausages. We chose the house and three other different ones. It came with 3 traditional potato pancakes, additional sauerkraut awesome seasoned cabbage and three dressings. From what I remembered it might have been that apple butter again, a mustard and some sort of horse radish mix. It fed my husband and I more than comfortably and we took about the side of one sausage home and some kraut. The taste was just perfect. I can't wait to try the pretzels next time and their other specials. I really liked the environment, we watched Forest Gump at the bar and had a great relaxing time before going back home and running errands.

After a disappointing lunch at Bar Louie today, some of my group wandered across the street (we jaywalked but don't tell that security lady) to Schweinehaus for beer and dessert. Yeah, yeah I know the two don't really go together but that's the day we were enjoying. I've not been here before but if the food is as good as the dessert and beer it's awesome! Had a powdered donut and coffee ice cream sandwich. OMG!! I was doing the happy dessert dance with every bite! The beer--well, I can't tell you what it was other that good. I asked for the closet thing to a Dos Equis Amber. It was nothing like it but still good. Will definitely be going back to try out the food!

Totally German- right down to the picnic tables! It is an authentic experience made approachable! I love the beer list captions. We didn't try the "classic lawnmower" beer but I gotta' say we were interested. The Australian dark was great! It's only description- "delicious" - so true! Every beer we had was awesome and there's just something about drinking them from massive pint (or liter) mugs. The grapefruit (first on the full page beer menu) is a must-try! The appetizers or as they call them, foods you eat before you eat other foods, are amazing! The bar fries are packed full of flavor and the fish-in-a-stick is to die for! I could eat that cod every day! No need for chips with this fish! Service was amazing!

Have been here twice now. Stellar brunch with generous portions. Some traditional brunch fare as well as fresh takes on German favorites. The brisket sandwich and pub fries were spectacular. Came back again for dinner a few weeks later and really enjoyed the salmon. Very moist with excellent flavor out of a thin crisp breading. The bed of roasted mushrooms and cherry tomato was excellent. Tip, be sure to check out uncle murle's sweet and spicy mustard while you're here. Beers, always cold and served in German bierHalle style in liter and half liter glass steins. They feel substantial and adds to the effect. Overall a fun place with solid food options, good local and German beer selections. Somewhat reasonable pricing, etc. check it out.

This place definitely has a great selection in beer! I love love love beer so whenever I go on vacation I usually look for a place that provides wheat or Belgium beer! The hubby and I decided to come here to drink some beer and have some dessert which is amazing! Unfortunately my rating for this place is a 4 because they didn't have my first 2 choices of beer. Another reason for the rating was because there was no vanilla ice cream available which made it difficult to commit to some of the desserts they had. They atmosphere is very uptown and safe. The service was definitely chill but the seating isn't so private. It didn't bother us so much because we love meeting locals and seeing what they feel is necessary for us to see in their city. Overall great place to have a drink and grab dessert!

I think they have one of the best people watching spots on Overton Square. Grab yourself a half-liter brew and pair it with a pretzel or sausage to munch on. Feeling a bit more hungry? Then try out the Jagerschnitzel!! There's a late night menu as well. Patio is spacious, and the heaters keep you warm during the cold nights. Don't forget to leave a fun message on the chalkboard in the bathroom!

I popped in here recently looking for a crazy big mug of beer and a warm soft pretzel. I found both! Three of us sidled up to the bar (my personal favorite place to sit in this place) and made friendly with the bartender. She made some great beer suggestions and got our order in quickly. She was friendly and spot on with her recommendations. The pretzel (with cheese and mustard obvs) went down great with a cold German brew. My tipsy father couldn't stop talking about the kraut balls which he and my husband wolfed down in just a few minutes. I can't speak to more than the service at the bar, but it was friendly, prompt and made me a happy customer!

Went for a date night with my husband. We had never been here before and were a bit surprised by the community seating. (Prob should have read the reviews in here to avoid that surprise). We had the pretzel appetizer - that was good. I got the Pork schnitzel and my husband got the brisket. We thought both of our meals were so-so. The breading and sauce on the schnitzel were really thick for my taste. I wouldn't order it again. Best parts of our experience- our waitress was really nice and helpful and the beer! If you like fruity beers, get the grapefruit one.

Don't go for the food. I have never had to say or do this before. My chicken schnitzel tasted so bad that I spit it out. It was rubbery and cold with an unappealing flavor that ketchup cod not mask. This is so disappointing not only because it was expensive but also because I was really really hungry.my entire entree with veggies and potatoes were cold and extremely over salted to the point of being inedible. My husband tried the schwein house burger. The bun was stale and the burger was cd. The French fries were soggy and undercooked. Service was good. Beer was lukewarm. What a shame. I had high hopes for a new German restaurant. I love German food. This is not anywhere even remotely close to authentic German food.

  • Susie B.

The concept is nice and the food is great. The music could be toned down, but in all, a good experience! Ordered: Brussels sprouts, mac and cheese and the Wurst (best) platter. Three items were big enough to share with three people. The spaetzel was good and not bland as some reviewers have suggested. The platter's mustard sides were also good. I would love to go back to try some sandwiches. Waiter: very nice, well informed. Good work. Caveat: the music and the women-barkeeps' dresses seem a little stereotypical and phoney. My only suggestion would be to tone both down and switch to some modern German music to switch it up. All told, a great experience!

Schweinehaus is fast becoming one of my favorite places for a beer. I love the feel of the place with all the sturdy wooden tables and German beer mugs on the walls. I highly recommend the bar fries. They're all cheesey and pork covered deliciousness. The service is always friendly and I was really excited to see a man (presumably the menu maker) sitting at a table surrounded by cookbooks full of German foods the last time I was in. Definitely a place to stop in.

When I was 22, I was engaged to a German. He was from Berlin and had a very sexy accent...but then I called it off 2 months before the wedding. I just couldn't imagine growing old with him...and frankly, I had difficulty understanding what he was saying sometimes. So what is the point of this ridiculous story? I have a soft spot for Germans, I guess. My favorite thing that is currently happening is Memphis is that we are trying new things. So this place gets bonus points just for being different and not the same ole same ole. The exterior is baller and walking in with those communal tables and the waiters in adorable outfits and the music - home run, y'all. Growing up in this city, I would have never thought we would have gotten here...and I love it. Very exciting. I went last night and they still don't have their liquor license. It takes forever, I get it, but it was still slightly annoying since I don't drink beer and that is all they had. Can't take off for that though so let's talk about the food now. I had the flash fried okra with bacon and it took me to the moon and back. I don't even like okra but our waiter told me to get it and boy oh boy am I glad that I listened to him. It is a huge dish so share it with a friend or be prepared to take some home with you. And the pretzel bun with meatballs and tomato jam? That was gone in 2.5 seconds. But the mac and cheese was the real winner. You can judge me all you want, but I actually prefer Velveeta mac and cheese to any mac and cheese I get at a restaurant...until now. This stuff is GOOD. Like, real good. So good in fact that I might go back this week. What can I say? I like cheese. The prices are incredibly reasonable and I walked out of there with only a $25 tab (including tip). I'll definitely be back just as soon as I can get a cocktail there.

Awesome meal with great service! My girlfriend and I went for dinner Monday night during trivia. It was so much fun! I had several glasses of wine with the brisket. So delicious! My friend had the pork chop with the puréed sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts. So, so good!! If German food scares you, don't let it. The menu is very easy to read and there is something for everyone on it!

This place has a lot of potential... a lot. It just doesn't quite reach it. I love the look (minus the flags), but the food was only okay. I think maybe if i was drinking I'd have been more into it, but the over all feel of the group was kind of the same... "it's cool, but could be cooler." I think they could throw an amazing Harry Potter or Game of Thrones party there, but enough of my nerdiness (that would get them 5 stars in my book, though!)

Very happy to have a mini "beer garden" style restaurant in Midtown! Schweinehaus is a nice little addition to the strip of restaurants on Madison Avenue, which I'm guessing will only make the parking situation worse. Since this place just opened, they still have a few beginning restaurant kinks to iron out. They are apparently getting their liquor license this week, so hopefully the patrons visiting this weekend will have the option for mixed drinks. So let's talk highlights: The Beer - Nice but small selection of German beer. I think they win on quality vs. quantity. They offer three sizes of beer: 8oz (for those who aren't huge drinkers or want to taste a few beers), 1/2 liter (for those who want to hang out for a bit), and 1 liter (for those who plan to stay all afternoon with their friends and have a designated driver). The Food - It's Germany meets the South. They take some traditional German dishes and kick it up a notch with some spices and Southern style food. I started with the Bar Frites, which had a generous helping of pulled pork in between fries and a gravy style sauce. We were warned by the waitress that this dish will fill you up...and it did. I also tried the Haus Salat (pretty basic), the Jagerschnitzel (which was SPICY and a little dry, but the sides were really good) and the Spatzel Mac & Cheese. Everything was pretty good, but the next day as leftovers, the food was even better! The Atmosphere - Community tables! Great for starting up a random conversation with the group next to you. There are a few tables and a bunch of bar stools outside, and a good number of large tables inside. I sat outside under the partially covered patio and the weather was perfect. The employees were very nice, attentive and were surprisingly well trained on the menu for a restaurant only being open for about five seconds. Food and beer came out quickly (always a bonus in my book). I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a casual place for a larger group to hang out, have a few beers and snack on some German Food. I knocked this place down a star for the dried Jagerschnitzel and repetitive German music, but overall a solid little place.

Stopped in mid afternoon on Saturday. Patio had a crowd, inside very sparse. Sat on the patio - nice area to look out over Madison Ave. Beer was OK, atmosphere was OK, service was slow. Food is overpriced. $13 for a fancy hamburger? Is it that expensive because it has sauerkraut on it? $7 for the Brezel (pretzel)? The draft beer selection is extensive (it would help your customers if they identified the sizes, not just the prices). Don't get a mixed drink - my wife did, very small, did not taste good, We came here from Wiseacre's Oktoberfest celebration - atmosphere there was great, not so much at Schweinhaus. Wonder if this could be a casualty of over-estimating the market before too long.

I love how overton square has rejuvenated. I also love the variety. The new German restaurant is a welcome addition. I got the large beer. Its like a liter I think. Service was good. Food is also good. I had the sausage platter. We got to choose 4 sausages. It also came with cabbage and sauerkraut. Sausages were good. I don't like sauerkraut. However it was the best that I have ever eaten. It also came with potato pancakes which were average. I got to try a burger which I enjoyed. I also tried the pretzel which was too salty. They had a special dessert of some kind of strawberry lemon cake. It was good. I'd like to go again and order a different entree.

I was super excited when I heard a German restaurant was coming to Overton Square; after I heard some not so good reviews, I decided to pass until my coworker really wanted to give the place a try. The atmosphere is actually really nice. I like the communal tables and the pigs painted on the bottom of the walls. I heard one of the owners made the tables-don't know if this is true but they were beautifully made. The appetizers were the best part of the evening. We had the fried brussels and the bar frites. Both were prepared well and I wouldn't hesitate to order again. Now I had some issues with our entrees. My coworker ordered the jaergerschnitzel and we were both displeased. It didn't taste fresh. I had the pork chop; it was a very nice sized piece of meat and very tender but it had absolutely no seasoning. I am willing to go back but I will probably stick to appetizers.

Doesn't live up to it's expectations. The atmosphere is sort of German beer hall with big picnic tables. Beer serving is german style with 1/2 liter and one liter mugs. Somehow it still doesn't feel very festive. Too loud inside? There could have been a wider selection of German and German style beers. The menu seems rather limited, not a goodly amount of choices of German food. The fried Brussel Sprouts were good. The choice of sausages was small and not very diversified.

Let me first say that I love German beer -especially wheat ("weizen"). The Krombacher Weizen was most triumphant, and the Hofbrau Marzen was great too. Although the prices are arguably on the high side ($15/liter -which isn't THAT bad), I like the fact that they virtually equal out to be the same (on a per ounce basis) regardless of size. This gives you the flexibility to try multiple beers since they have 8, 16, and 32 ounce options. Onto the food... I tried 3 different things -all pretty good, but here's how I rank them in order of taste: 1. Brezel Fische 2. Spatzel Mac & Cheese 3. Fried Brussels I look forward to going back and trying the other food options, and I really hope this place continues to give and receive support, because I love the concept!

Hilarious place: everyone is decked out in traditional German attire, and the music is wild--funny octoberfest mixed with country, making it the least likely place to get some studying done, but that's not the point! The selection of beer and food is so awesome you'll drink a pint of the good stuff and truly appreciate all the rest!

This place was a miss for me. While the food is decent, it's not really anything to write home about it, and not really the 'mostly authentic' German food I was hoping for. It is what it is. It isn't bad, though. Just not what I was expecting and not the best of the best. The servers were fantastic. They definitely are well trained on what their beer selection is and can explain in more detail any menu item you're wondering about. They're very prompt and courteous. The atmosphere is pretty cool to me. I actually really like community tables. Maybe that makes me a weird Memphian. I don't know. But it makes for a really friendly atmosphere! My only complaint is the management. I don't know what his name was, and I should have gotten it, but he isn't really good with people. Multiple times I saw him verbally threaten to kick tables out if they didn't keep the noise down, instead of being more diplomatic about his approach. If you want people to be quiet, just explain to them that there are other patrons present and they'll be more likely to respond well. But don't ever threaten to kick someone out when it is the first time you've addressed them. HOWEVER, I can't say I'm entirely surprised, as they were fairly combative on facebook when they first opened as well. Just not a good way to keep customers. Especially those of us who like to frequent local businesses.

Man, I was so unbelievably excited for this place to open, as this city lacked a good German restaurant (sorry Grawemeyer's). The establishment finally opened and we waited a couple weeks to finally go (wanted the crowd to die down a bit). We walk in and there are plenty of community wooden tables and benches which were a plus, the rest looked like an Epcot rendition of Germany. They were playing random non-German videos which definitely threw me off as well. Our server came by to take our drink orders, and I have a small Weinhstephaner (drink prices are exceptionally steep here) and the girlfriend had a coke. We then ordered a "Wurst Platter" with two Frankfurters, Boar, and Venizen, with a side of Mac and Cheese. I hate to say it, but the platter was just awful. The plate was dominated by kraut, the potato pancake was bland, the side mac and cheese was exceptionally bland, and the meats were not of good quality; we couldn't even finish the meats because they simply did not taste good whatsoever (and these are typically meats I had enjoyed thoroughly when going to other German restaurants in other parts of the US). After tip, our meal cost over $50 and was certainly a disappointment. Not even joking, my girlfriend and I both got sick an hour after eating here; that cannot be a coincidence. I certainly hope that this place turns things around, because I like that Memphis is seeing a more diverse culinary offering, but I don't see myself coming back anytime soon.

I was so happy when I first heard Memphis was getting a German place in Overton Square. Now, I have finally been to check it out. I was waiting for a friend, so I ordered up a half litre of beer... at $8 Hofbrau Marzen seems a little steep, but the beer was brought out in a great glass and the waitress was cheery as can be. I enjoyed it and waited for my friend... time passed... I ordered another beer. This time I enjoyed the Schofferhofer Grapefruit (not too secretly, I love radlers), and this was delicious. I also ordered the Brezel. The Beer cheese dip was super tasty. My friend texted me and informed me he was close, so I put in my order for the Wurst Platter with Brat, Bauern, Weiss, and Venison... It was AMAZING. The sides were tasty. my friend arrived and ordered up a couple beers. I got a Maß of the Hofbrau Dunkel. These things are legit! One litre of German beer. It hits the spot. He also ordered Sauerkraut Balls and the Konigsburg Klopse. The good: Tasty food German Beers served in Maß Awesome waitresses community style tables (if you don't hate other people) The bad: Food prices - these were high. Beer prices - these seemed very very high community style tables (if you hate other people) I will be coming back, but with the high prices, it will only be on a limited basis

Currently eating the fried chicken sandwich with a side salad and it's delicious! They put bacon on everything. Service is killer too!

Kudos to David Todd for really expanding making the food be the star of the show here. The wurst platter and the brisket are just amazing. And the brussel sprouts really are something special. I would highly recommend the food here to anyone looking for something different and made with lots of love.

Tried one more time with similar results. Just don't think this will be my hangout. Another couple was with us and they were not impressed either. Not sure why I'm even giving two stars other than maybe the service didn't suck out loud.

So good. I felt like I was eating in Hamburg. Despite the fact that most of the food is fried, i really enjoyed my dinner. I'll be back.

I'm really torn here, I'd like to like this place but left disappointed. We went because my bf is loves German beer and was super excited to check this place out. We arrived to see a healthy sized crowd. The staff was very friendly and we were seated promptly. Personally I do not like the community tables but I totally get that gives the German feel so no fault there. Within a few minutes I was cranky being there because the cheesy German music was so loud! Maybe it's because the place it's new and everything is squeaky clean, or it's the outfits everyone is wearing but it just felt very Disney let's be stereotypical German to me. Also, almost everything had sauerkraut on it, which I hate so it made ordering a challenge - also again, lets stereotype Germans. They do offer some platters that sounded good but we didn't come planning on buying $20 dinners. I was considering some of the sausages and our waitress said the wurst plate was a really good value for the money so we got it. The bf ordered an 8oz beer which he liked. The wurst platter comes with 4 sausages, bread, mustards, sauerkraut, red cabbage and a potato pancake. We got 2 frankfurters one buffalo and one venison. The platter comes and all of the food is on this huge mountain of the sauerkraut, so while it looks like a lot of food it's not, just food on top of a large serving of a cheap condiment. The frankfurters were ok sized but the other sausages were tiny. The bread was two small toasted pieces, the pancake was ok, kinda bland. We had also ordered a side of Mac and cheese - we didn't finish it because it too was bland. We had planned on ordering dessert but because our food was a disappointment we decided to pass. I really struggled with giving a bad review to a new business but there was nothing wrong with the service and I've just got to believe a restaurant knows what their food tastes like before they open their doors. Boo on me all you want but they are open for business and charging full price so I'm giving my full opinion. PS: both the bf and I had very upset tummys by the time we made it home, coincidence? I've heard several people discuss issues with the meat quality be it undercooked or too fatty and based on the high and mighty response the owner has given to another patron on their FB page I have to strongly recommend the good people of Memphis not waste money here.

Let me begin by saying 2 things: A) I wanted, more than anything, to fall completely in love with this place! B) I wasn't expecting a 100% German experience. With that in mind, here goes: 1) Atmosphere: It was 'ok' - long wooden tables and pseudo-Ooompa band music was nice - I love the communal approach to the pub, every pub should be like this. However, they still couldn't resist what I consider to be the "lonely guy TV's" posted above the bar. Why, why, why? Most classy German restaurants and pubs don't do this b/c it's about conversation and general feelings of "Gemütlichkeit." The TV's take that away, big time! Maybe bring in a projector for soccer games (very European) but you just don't need to have Pirates of the Caribbean and Patch Adams showing during lunch. Also, the two flags were thoughtful but you could do WAY better. 2) Menu: Here's where they began to lose serious points. They'd misspelled multiple things on the menu, spätzle became "spätzEL", Köningsburg became "KOningsburg." Not only this but the language usage wasn't consistent at all. Sometimes they'd use "Jägerschnitzel" (Jäger meaning "hunter" FYI) and then below they'd list another menu item as "Chicken Schnitzel" instead of keeping with the German precedent THEY started and could've easily listed "Hühnerschnitzel" with a description below in English as had been done in the above listing... And the kicker: a menu item called "Müll Spätzel" literally meaning "Trash Egg Noodles / Dumplings." I've been to over 200 classy German restaurants in Germany and the U.S. and I can honestly say I've never seen the word "Müll/Trash" on any menu item title. I, again, laughed out loud. I did have the Wild Boar sausage and I can say that it was excellent. However, the dried out sauerkraut and bizarre red cabbage ruined it. I've never had sauerkraut that bad, in Germany or the U.S. 3) Beer: it's 90+% German, and that's great. But holy cow, it's ridiculously expensive. For a "Maß" (i.e. liter of beer) in Germany at a touristy place like the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, you'd spend 8 Euros, about $10. Here you spend $15 plus tax/tip, so more like $18.50. yes $18 for a liter of beer, i.e. that's 3 U.S. size bottles FYI. Ouch!!! Not me. I opted for the $4 version which was, get ready for it, only 8 oz. Yes, I was shocked, so shocked that I laughed out loud again when I got it. I asked the waiter about a future pint nite or happy hour in my thoughts that maybe this place could be a watering hole for me and my buds on guy's night, but he said disappointingly that they didn't have plans to offer anything. Big downer. Beer is THE cornerstone of all we hold dear regarding their food/drink culture. At $18/liter it is highly doubtful the common middle-class guy's hang out will be here. If you want quality German beer, go down to Cash Saver about 1 mile down Madison and pay a low $8-10 for nearly TWO liters of Franziskaner, Spaten, and Hofbräuhaus beer. 4) Other: We are back to the German language again. Geez, if you're going to use it, use it correctly at least. Do 10 minutes of research, call a German friend, or visit the language department at a local university before painting it on the doors and walls. Here's where they just seemed plain, ole lazy. The hall to the bathrooms was labelled "Toilette" meaning "toilet" - yes, just ONE. As there were more than just one, they should have used "Toiletten" -- easy! Then on to the bathroom doors: "Herr" means basically "Mr" -- it should have been "Herren" meaning "Gentlemen" at the least, even worse though: for women they had "Fräulein" meaning "unmarried woman" or "Ms." -- only OLD people in Germany still use that term, if at all, it's considered outdated and a bit male chauvinistic -- the proper term now is "Damen" meaning "Ladies"... 5) Attire: They are big on a dress code, fine. Their servers/waiters however look silly at best. From German-flag colored tops/pants/skits/hose to super fake lederhosen T-shirts!!!! What the?! Either do it, or don't. Keep it simple, all black - or go all out, and get faux-lederhosen at the very least. Okay, so that was possibly the longest review I've ever posted. It's likely that most will never make it to the bottom, but if you did, congrats. In summary: don't waste your time and money until they decide to represent the "German tradition" with more class and authenticity, not to mention plain ole' respect.

Having visited Germany earlier this year I was very excited for Schweinhaus to open! The pros: - Good beer selection. I like the mix of German beers and local beers. - The sizes of beers offered. I enjoyed the tasters / smallest beers. - The food. While they do not have traditional wiener schnitzel, the pork schnitzel was delicious. The portion was large enough to share. The pretzel was also delicious. - The patio. - The community tables. Things to work on: - The service. Our server inside was very nice, but admitted she had not tasted all the beer or food. When I asked questions she was not familiar with things. - We moved outside to the patio. Our server was confused when I asked for a small taster beer. - Different servers kept bringing us beer and food that we did not order. We had to continuously tell them, nope we didn't order that. I hope to see this place around for a long time. There is not another concept in town like it. I hope the service issues can be ironed out over time.

I've only been here once, but I felt like this place has been here for years and I was a regular patron. First off- this place is awesome! From the decor, the seating set up, to the employees outfits. I loved the beer selection (honestly I love most hefeweizens and this place had like 7 on tap) and they even had some of Memphis' own craft beers to choose from. Secondly- this is how it goes: you arrive, tell the host or hostess how many people and they will seat you at one of their many giant tables. You basically get to sit with a bunch of strangers (that after a liter or 2 are your new best friends) at a long picnic table; even the chairs are long benches. Then, you have 3 options to have your beer served to you: 1. The full liter, 2. The half liter (16.9 oz) and 3. The 8oz glass. Of course, I suggest the full liter. Not just because it's in a giant mug made for cheering your comrades on with, but there's also a contest (described below)!! :) My favorite thing about this place is that if you order a liter of beer, you have the option of getting if for free! The contest is that you have to hold this liter of beer, arm fully extended away from your body, for 5 whole minutes. If you do so, your beer is free and your name and time goes on a board! (Just a heads up, a liter of brew in those cups is about 4.5lbs) I'm vegan (with the exception of beer) so I didn't try the food. However, everyone in the entire place was raving about how great it is. I mean, just judging from the smell (this place just reeks of delicious sausages..in a good way) it must be wonderful. In short, I cannot wait to come back! I might even train at home for a few weeks so that I can win the liter challenge

I am totally happy to see this place open up in Overton Square!! We were in need of something different, but anywho. I stumbled upon a soft opening before the Grand Opening of the place and couldn't miss out on this opportunity while I had the chance. Dining Monkeys will definitely approve of this being kid friendly bc I was even able to go in with my huge baby stroller! They have a patio outside and both inside and out have community tables. My uncle always told me that back when he was stationed there it was the best way for him to learn German bc they all sat together. I also think it is a great way to get us Memphians to talk to each other and not be stuck in our phones or whatever. The service was great. My server was very helpful and made sure me and my baby had water and he even refilled my baby bottle!! I tried an 8oz Krombacher Pils and it was tasty. I also had the sauerkraut balls that are filled with pork and onions and the Spatzel Mac n Cheese. The Mac and cheese had some spice to it. I saw alot of pork dishes going out which makes sense bc that's part of their concept. That pork belly is cooked by a genius!!! The atmosphere of this place to me was Spot On! Community tables, German movies playing, staff wearing the cute outfits(corny but cute) and even the music in the background. I even spotted some real authentic beer mugs that screamed Oktoberfest! I love this place though, me and my hubs love their brunch the most! I think if you go in with the concept of German food mixed with Memphis influences you won't be disappointed. Huge portions, nice ambience, and beer! I'm sold.

I am not sure when they opened their doors, but this place is alive and kicking! It is a casual atmosphere with large picnic tables through the restaurant that make it prime for big groups or a family. The bar is beautiful, but small. Wish they would have used some of the space for a larger bar. The patio is outstanding though, so that makes up for it. The patio has both picnic tables and high top seating. The dont sell wine or liquor yet, however they still have those goods listed on the menu. What a tease...looking forward to some of their feature cocktails! I only came in for a drink but I am excited to come back....the food listed on the menu sounds delicious! Wild boar sausage, pulled pork rubeun, potato pancakes! Service was decent and friendly. There is something annoyingly casual about this place and the inside is very loud. As I mentioned, I dont know when they opened but they clearly are still getting their footing. It's okay though...I think they will get it! Looking forward to returning in a few weeks. This place I am sure will be a hit (especially among the boys)!

Worst restaurant in town. Way too much of a gimmick. Food is mediocre at best. Beer selection has certainly improved. Went here bout a tear ago after their opening and wasn't impressed with anything including the head chef's attitude and although I didn't see him again, I'd still say the overall experience was a C- at best.

One word: WOW. Managed to get in on opening night, and was just so impressed with both the quality of the food and the service! First things first: This is not a quiet place to have dinner and catch up on conversation. The environment is definitely louder than what you might expect for the area, but the excitement that comes from it is absolutely infectious. The management even hosts a rolling competition to see who can hold their liter pours of beer at arms length the longest! It was really fun to get wrapped up in the clapping and cheering that would spontaneously start because of it. The food was stellar. My friends and I ordered several of the appetizers to get a feel for the style, and weren't disappointed. The potato cakes weren't bad (but with cream cheese on the side, it felt more like a dessert than an appetizer). The bar fries might have been one of the best things I've ever eaten, they are a must buy for me from now on. Definitely worth a visit on a night where you need to drink a liter (or 3!) of beer with friends, and wouldn't hate a bite of delicious food to go with it!

It was with great anticipation that I went to Schweinhaus last night. Good German food has been hard to find in Memphis since Erika's closed. Considering they've only been open four days, it was not bad. I was a little taken aback to realize that all tables are communal. My friend and I wound up sitting with five strangers at a long picnic table. When busy, the restaurant is VERY loud. We decided to order the Wurst platter to share because it had a nice selection of sausages, potato pancakes, kraut and sauces. We got to select four sausages from the chef's daily selection board. The Wild Boar was far and away the best of the bunch. The potato pancakes were very bland - no seasoning. The apple Jezebel sauce was a nice accompaniment, though. The platter came with some red cabbage and kraut, both were very good. We requested the "grilled bread" that was supposed to come with the platter. It was two small pieces of toasted bread. The beer selection is mostly German with some nice local brews added. They do have a wine list and full bar with some specialty cocktails. I have to say I found the beer prices to be high. $4 for an eight ounce beer, $8 for a half stein and $15 for a full stein, regardless of the beer ordered. Service was earnest yet uneven. It took over five minutes for our waitress to come over only to be told she would be right back with us. Then she disappeared again for almost 10 minutes. When we asked for details about the various wursts, she indicated that she took notes, but she couldn't find the specific one we inquired about. Once we ordered, things seemed to smooth out. Service will improve with time and experience. Overall, I would go back and order something different. Our tablemates' food appeared to be very yummy. They do have a very nice patio when the weather cools off a bit.

I've always loved German fare and beer and to say I was excited for this restaurant to open is an understatement. Three weeks after its opening and the boyfriend and I finally went! We went on a Tuesday and there was no wait, which was a pleasant surprise. Of course, the patio was already full, but we were fine with sitting inside. We were served within minutes of sitting down and our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about menu items. For appetizers, we ordered the Konigsburg Klopse (German meatballs) and the friends we went with ordered the Bar Frites. The meatballs were good and the caper sauce really added to the flavor. For entrees, I ordered the Pulled Pork Reuben [amazing!], my boyfriend ordered the Jagerschnitzel, and our friends split the Wurst Platter. None of us had any complaints about our food and we were stuffed by the end. My only advice if you order the reuben, it comes with fries so you may want to swap it out with a different side. The reason for the 4-star rating? The beer is pricey. If they want to market their restaurant as a traditional German beer hall where people gather to eat and drink, they're going to have a hard time keeping people at $8/pint. It's one thing if you maybe have some specialty beer that no other place in the city serves, but even the local brews (Wiseacre, Memphis Made, and High Cotton) were listed at that price. The breweries themselves don't even charge that much at their own taprooms. Overall impression: delicious food and has the potential to be a great social gathering spot.

We came on a Wednesday at lunch and had the half Ruben with beer cheese soup and pulled pork and ham sandwich on pretzel bread, both were excellent, perfect portion size for me. If you are a big eater, you may want to add an appetizer. Service was also very good. I've had friends who complained about this restaurant because it wasn't as authentic as they would have liked, but I don't mind this. I don't expect to find truly authentic German food anywhere outside of Germany. The quality of the food is what matters most to me and the quality of this food was excellent.

I was skeptical about trying this place because I had seen some reviews that were cause for concern. Glad my husband made me go for lunch! The food was fabulous -- I had the Monday lunch special of beer grits and greens with a generous slab of pork. Mouthwatering and a perfect match of flavors. Add to that a small 8oz beer -- perfect lunch. Next time I hope we get to sit on the patio!

Atmosphere is ok, why are we playing hard rock when Bavarians clearly don't play that when you go to their restaurants ( I am native I should know). The food is mediocre, over cooked and the presentation is horrible. Service was ok. I thought it awful to put 18% right off the bat on my bill for tipping?? I tip well, but not 18% for a place that is loud, cold and does not serve the right balance of food. Not enough vegetables (and hey that's cheap) -- Spaetzle are ok, red braised cabbage was reall good, brisket was dry and way overcooked, Jaegerschnitzel was NOT authentic, wrongly breaded, and too greasy. Desserts are NOT authentic. Will we go back??? Hm, probably NOT. Too expensive for fake bavarian eatery - and lots of spelling mistakes on the menu.

Solid! Loved the vibe and decor! The menu is terrific.... Started off with a stein of german beer. Mmmmmmm. My only complaint is that I wish they had an IPA on draft. Nada!!! That would have made a 5 for me. Good wines on menu... Even german ones! We split the potato pancake ... Crispy fast and good! I had the beef.... I liked it... It wasn't what I was expecting.. More a southern style. The speatzle was also delish.... And amazing Brussel sprouts! Well done. Word of note... We went on a quiet night.... And food was fast. We had to slow the service down to have a breather between apps and dinner.

I loved the old Paulette's restaurant that was formerly at this location, so I wasn't sure how well it would translate to a German style beer hall. But the decor is pretty close to other American versions of a beer hall and kind of fun. We started with the pretzel and cheese dip appetizer, which was great. Our entrees were generously sized, more than enough to have for lunch the next day. The server was excellent, friendly and efficient. Wish I could remember his name to give him a shout out. But the staff all seemed to be smiling and busy, so that's a positive for the staff and management. My meal was fine, but next time I'm just ordering the appetizer pretzel for myself - it was that good.

The jagerschnitzel tasted like tough country fried steak but was enough for two people. I didn't know what to do with all my leftovers...when I was in germany two yrs ago I bought a schnitzel and brotchen for a euro fifty and tasted like heaven compared to what cost $17 at this restaurant. I really wanted to like this restaurant because I love german food but...yeah not again for me.

Ok food I guess...nothing to brag about. It's price-y for what you get though! And the tap beer is really very expensive! 16 oz for $8! But great wait staff, our waiter Nicholas was really nice and attentive! Decor doesn't have enough german influence to be a true brauhaus. We won't come back, probably.

Delicious food. At first it looks pricier than average, but the food portions are large enough to share between three, so it is definitely worth it. We had Brussel sprouts wrapped up in bacon, mac and cheese, and the sausage platter, I recommend all three, especially the mac and cheese! It was a delicious twist :) The sausage platter is large, with plenty of sausage options, three different mustards and sauerkraut and beets. The beer selection was also good, but if you like soft drinks, they have Pepsi products available. The service was good. The placed was packed. Sitting is on picnic-style tables, which means you will share your table with others. For us that wasn't a problem. In fact, two Austrian couples sat next to us and we chatted a little bit about the food :) they liked it as much as we did. There were two odd things IMO, but not bad at all: 1- there were ash trays on the table. I didn't see anyone smoking, but it appears as if it is allowed in the patio area. 2- the music was a little repetitive and stereotypical. It wasn't loud enough to bother us though, and every so often we would hear a Scorpions song! Sadly, no Nena :) Overall, a great experience. IMO, a great place to go with friends to eat, drink and have fun. :)

i've been dying to go here ever since it opened, but haven't had time until this weekend. i've been intrigued by it simply because everyone thinks i'm 1/2 german, so i just play along with it too. and my current boss is german as well. so german food has been on my mind for a while! so im so glad this place opened in midtown. i came saturday morning for brunch, and they had both the brunch menu and the regular menu. here are the things i tried: SPECIAL OF THE DAY (COFFEE PANCAKES w/ 2 EGGS + BACON): as soon as the waiter said the special of the day, i just had to have it. it was 3 pancakes "coffee flavoured" topped with some mandarin orange slices, shaved chocolate, and whipped cream. doesn't that sound delicious? the verdict: it was just all right. I honestly was expecting more of a coffee-ish flavour. there was some coffee flavor, but i think it was from the ground up beans, and therefore, mixed in with the pancake batter, left for an interesting after taste. i do like the pairing with the sliced mandarin oranges and the chocolate shavings, but i probably wouldn't order this again if it were offered. it was honestly just okay. the sides were good though! the eggs typically come sunny side up, but i asked for scrambled (yummies) and the bacon was crisp and to the point. BRISKET: my friend ordered the brisket with a side of mac n cheese and brussell sprouts. the brisket was very good! i would definitely recommend this. It was more of like a thin thin steak though, just fyi. unfortunately, it came with alot of fatty pieces, which i know some people like, but i am not a fan of. i was SO looking forward to tryin the mac n cheese based on everybody's reviews on yelp, but it wasn't that cheesy or soft. it was like it had been left out for a while. so that was disappointing. but the brussell sprouts were ON POINT!!! BURGER: my other friend ordered the burger. the burger was great! very juicy and succulent. it comes with a side of fries. nothing to write home to mom about, but definitely gets the job done. The beers are about $7/pint, but the pints are pretty big! If you're a beer fan, that would be great for you. The seating area is filled with these patio style benches, so you just slide in next to a friend. I like the idea, to make it kind of woodsy/german, but the lighting was kind of dim at the time. They have two tvs playing at the same time with captions (you have no idea how much i appreciate that) for those that like to look away and just watch tv for a few min. Our waiter was kind and patient, but it did take a while to get served and have him come back to take our order. but overall the experience is not bad. the food is just all-right though. its a cute concept! and hopefully it'll get better with time / i think i just need to eat through the menu some more.

Mixed review for me. I had a braised ribs special with greens and cheese grits. The greens and grits were ok, but the ribs tasted like they were sitting out all day and then heated up in a microwave. Tough as shoe leather. I am not giving up on them yet. The atmosphere in the place is pretty cool, and great selection of beers and desserts!

Like a lot of folks, we'd heard mixed reviews about town. Finally decided to give it a try and we liked it. The atmosphere is fantastic--love the communal tables (because I'm a talker!), well decorated, nice bar, etc. When the place fills up, it does get a little loud so just go in with the appropriate expectations. The tables seat 8-10 so this would be a great venue for a party that size. We had the brussels sprouts--one of the best appetizers I've had in 20+ years of eating out. Simply amazing. And as we've been talking to friends about Schweinehaus, it seems like everyone is raving about this dish. Get them! Had the Schweinehaus burger, and while this admittedly may not be the most German dish on the menu, it was incredible. I'd put it up against any in town. We came away a little uncertain as to why people are talking about the fries though...just average. Cocktail menu not as robust as some others in town, but the Munich quickly became one of my favorites in Memphis. Service is okay (it was a busy night), but in an environment like this that's a little more acceptable for me. I've never met a stranger, so we chatted with the couple next to us a bit. He grew up in Stuttgart and had been here a few times. He gave the food two thumbs up--gotta mean something, right?

The restaurant decor is definitely German and the wait staff wear outfits to match. German music plays while you dine inside at the long wooden tables or outside on the patio watching passers by. We ordered the bretzel pretzel that came with melted cheese and German mustard, very good! The Mac & cheese was a little bland for our taste buds and needed a little seasoning. The braunwurst and kraut came with the mustard too and was so delicious! There is a big list of German beers for your drinking pleasure. We've been waiting for the restaurant to open and will go again.

It's okay but don't over-expect. The old Paulette's building is a great atmosphere for this type of restaurant although one wonders why they alternate oompa music with Whitesnake at about 120 decibels (not exaggerating). The service was really good and attentive (I was there for lunch so not very crowded). Now about the food. Two entrees--wurst platter and jaegerschnitzel. The wurst is acceptable although not any better than a pack of Johnsonville brats on your grill. I will exempt the venison link which was quite good. The jaegerschnitzel was below average. It was thick cut and had very little sauce. The cost of these two entrees and there soft drinks was $55 plus a tip. Not enough here for that price to make me anxious to go back.

Very average. The space is really open and when not full there is no atmosphere. Service falls into the "too cool to care" category. When asked about the sausages I was directed by my server to a chalk board that had them listed. Why not just tell me? The food, which should be exceptional German since that's the specialty is basically a step up from regular bar food. Too many better places around to spend my money than here.

Authentic German feel. Community tables, great patio and even better german beer on tap. Prost!

Good service, but the food is overly salty.... However their pretzel is awesome served with beer cheese. Their cocktails are good, and it is a nice location.

Although others have quibbled about the authenticity of Schweinehaus as a truly German restaurant, I'll not do so. (That might be because even though I have a good deal of German heritage, most of my German ancestors lived in Russia for more than a century and my current German family are mainly teetotalers; make of that what you will.) Eating a German "farmhouse-style" wurst and drinking large glasses of German lagers and ales while a Todd Snider favorite blared from the sound system and Star Wars movies played on the tv screen, while definitely not anything like a culturally homogenous activity, still seemed like a perfectly acceptable combination. I did feel as if I paid a bit more than I would've liked for what I ate and drank, but I have no complaints about the quality of my meal. (Bonus shout-out to the patron sitting at the table next to ours who recommended the specific schweinehaus sausage that I ordered--thanks for the tip. One of the perks of community seating!)

German inspired American bar food. Very good, great atmosphere, great beer selection. The chefs have a lot of creative freedom here which is nice. Just a really fun place to hang out. Shaggy is behind the bar and London is an awesome waitress!! :-)

I have been to Schweinhaus 3 times: brunch and lunch only so far. Their brunch menu is awesome, and they have a grapefruit beer that I love (yes, it is fruity, but it was BRUNCH!) The chicken-schnitz sandwich is delicious, very tender and super flavorful. I also love the original pork schnitzel, it is very traditional and I am so glad Memphis now has an amazing German place. You must try the sauerkraut balls- with the house mustard. The tables are long, picnic style. This makes for interesting and fun conversations. The place does get busy at night, as does everywhere on Overton Square, so plan accordingly.

The atmosphere is great, lot of folks. I had the Chicken Schnitzel - very filling and awesome....can be a little pricey (it is a little bit like Epcot)

I went there for lunch, and I wanted to like it so much. I love German food and I had read about the young owners and wanted to support them. Food was mediocre and more than anything, it made me nostalgic for the great food served by the old Erika's downtown. Sadly, I think I could cooked a meal comparable to this one at home.

Ive been there twice now, once on their soft opening night on labor day, and again last night. Nothing but great things to say about this place. If youre just going for beer, you will have a great time. If youre going for the atmosphere and the food, you'll have an even BETTER time. My friend and I tried the chicken shnitzel and it was....probably one of the best chicken sandwiches Ive ever eaten. The boar sausage appetizer on a pretzel bun was great as well. The service was excellent. We even had other servers stopping by to make sure we were taken care of. Def hit this place next time youre in the square.

I'd give this place a B on food and drinks, but an F on atmosphere. This is one of those places I want to like, but the terrible atmosphere and lack of cohesion ultimately drove me away. The traditional German folk music that plays on loop non-stop is a charming novelty when you walk in, but by the time you've been seated it becomes mind-grating and causes the whole restaurant to feel extremely gimmicky. I lived in Berlin for a year, and there's a reason 99% of the bars in Germany only play traditional folk music during Oktoberfest or May Day; it's great for drawing in the occasional tourist, but not so great for drawing and retaining regular customers. No one is saying you shouldn't play German music, but how about playing a larger, more contemporary variety of it, and save the traditional folk music for Oktoberfest? You wouldn't go to an American restaurant that just played Yankee Doodle, would you? --- I was also extremely excited when I heard they had communal seating that is a staple of many neighborhood bars/public houses across in Europe, but once again Schweinehaus let me down. Unlike the aforementioned European bars that cater primarily to the local communities surrounding them and implement communal seating to foster interaction among these communities; Schweinehaus has an identity crisis and can't decide if its a locals hangout, a tourist trap, a romantic getaway for suburban couples, a hipster bar, or some sort of German community center. What we're left with because of this indentity crisis, is a noisy clusterf*ck of people with nothing in common, who feel more alienated than they would have been sitting at traditional tables. --- Last criticism, and this one is a dealbreaker for me; THE FACT THAT YOU FORCE YOUR FEMALE WAITSTAFF TO WEAR SKIMPY DIRNDL DRESSES IS NOT ONLY GIMMICKY, BUT EXTREMELY PATRONIZING TO YOUR EMPLOYEES AND ALIENATING TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS. I just wanted to enjoy a burger and a German beer; but instead I spent the night feeling bad for my waitress (whose service and attentiveness was the only exceptional part of my visit that night), who was subject to several sexist comments from surrounding tables. As I was leaving, I overheard a woman outside on her cell phone saying: "Yeah, I just tried out this new German place. I will never eat here again. The waitresses working there all had to wear revealing uniforms like Hooters girls. If I wanted to see women get degraded for a paycheck, I would have just went to a strip club. At least there, they get paid hundreds of dollars and not just minimum wage." --- As far as the food goes; my Schtan Burger was delicious (but cooked medium-rare, not well-done as I requested) and the Jagerschnitzel was AMAZING. The assortment of German beers I tried were all great; perfect temperature and perfectly poured. The head was rich and frothy without being overdone. It's a shame about the uncomfortable environment of this place, because Memphis is sorely lacking in skilled bartenders/quality drinks, and the bartenders at this place really have their technique down and the beers are phenomenal. Maybe one day this place will have delivery, and I can try their amazing food again; but even then I'd be worried that a Volkswagen blasting "Der Jager aus Kurpfalz" from the stereo, and a deliverywoman with Lederhosen and a bikini would show up at my door.

Schweinhaus is a fun and loud beer hall with a great patio in the Overton Square district formally occupied by another European restaurant - Paulettes. The menu includes many familiar German specialties like jumbo pretzels, Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, and smoked pork chops. Served along with sides of Spaatzel, sausages, meatballs, cabbage or sauerkraut...and even mac-n-cheese. The beer selections include along side of the many premium German beers on tap the local fav's of MemphisMade, Ghost River, High Cotton, and Wiseacre. There is a regular bar featuring mostly super premium alcohol brands along side of some familiar German specialty liquors. The table seating is in the German style communal long table setup where they seat you right up to just whomever came in right before you. Pros: Loud and happy environment great patio for drinking and gazing at the passers by along the square all of the food was not authentic, but good great beer selection Cons: while tasty- the food was of a Sysco Foods style German fare the prices were a bit uncomfortably excessive$$$ for draft and pub grub the music was cheesy and repetitive When we approached the manager he explained it this way: "when you go to a Chinese or Mexican restaurant- you don't really believe you are getting authentic food, do you? Well, this is Memphis/German food. We are just trying to be a fun place to hangout!" All in all we had a blast, but for dinner and a couple of drinks each we laid out far more than we expected to. So bring a good attitude, and lots of money, prepare to sit with strangers and you'll have a great time~

Food is mediocre at best. The place had a rather odd smell when we walked in. Beware the owner, he does not take well to social media criticism of any kind.

We wanted to give them 5 stars because the food really is great. (You must try the Brussels sprouts. And the grilled char is great, too.) We only gave it 4 stars because the non-German music is way too loud. (I think they were playing 90s alternative, et al...) This is one of the few decent restaurants in the city. I wish Memphians could learn to appreciate something other than pulled pork slop... But that may be expecting too much.

Don't give the grapefruit beer a miss, if you enjoy a light fruit flavored beer . It's truly refreshing.

Been to Germany and been dying to experience it again. This place brought me back even though it's new and needs a little time. The beer is awesome. Love the hefeweizen! Pretzels were great and the jäger snitzel was spot on German.

First time I've ever had German food and was very satisfied. Ordered the pork schnitzel which was very good with a good size portion. Decent variety of draft beer selection although each time I ordered one the waitress had to check and make sure they still had some - wasn't sure what that was about. Waitress was friendly and service was quick. I do look forward to going back and trying some of the other dishes. One downside was the seating. The place is filled with wooden picnic table seating. Probably makes for easy cleanup but I kind of prefer comfortable seating

My wife and I went here expecting a good German meal (she is from Germany as is her girlfriend who now lives here in Memphis). Anyway, the four of us Myself, my wife, her girlfriend and her husband went here expecting a high quality German meal --- Boy oh boy were we disappointed! Where do I start? The speatzle (sp?) with cheese tasted more like they took some noodles and mixed them with kraft shells and cheese besides which this dish does not exist in Germany it might have been tolerable if it had less cheese but it was quite horrible. The breading was so thick on the schnitzle that it took away what flavor might have been there and the red cabbage had a disturbing aftertaste. My meat was so fatty as to be inedible. When we spoke with the owner he made excuses and even though he could plainly see that I was unable to eat my meal (I later went to Krystal to get something) he made no effort to make things right. As a matter of fact, his response to my poor review on FB was to suggest that I should have check out the website before I came to the restaurant and by the way, have a beer and chill out. Guess what ... I do not drink beer! 2 members of my group did have beer and said that it was acceptable. The atmosphere is a bit kitschy, but that is pretty much what I was expecting. So all of that being said, if you are going to have a beer and enjoy the atmosphere, then go, if you are going because you want good German food, SAVE YOUR MONEY! We were really hoping to have a good experience and this review would probably have been much different if the owner had made some effort to make things right and up until I walked out onto the sidewalk I was thinking I would give it another chance, but after we left and I saw his response to my poor review I determined that I AM NOT going back.

Ate here since there was immediate seating and where we planned to go in Overton Square had an hour wait. It was alright, probably better for someone who particularly likes German food. It was good for the experience, but we won't be back. The music was horrible - very loud butt rock mixed with some indie. It did not suit the atmosphere at all. Plus, our table-neighbor jabbed me in the leg with her high heel trying to sit down on the community bench. It's worth a try, even if you just go once.
