I hate to admit that I went somewhere other than pho bihn for pho... But on Sunday's I have no choice as pho bihn is closed. I read great reviews and couldn't believe I'd never heard of it until now. My husband got the lemongrass beef vermicelli and absolutely loved it. The beef was high quality as was the beef in my pho tai. The broth was slightly more oily than pho bihns but still delicious and satisfying. The server recommended a purple bubble tea when I asked if they had any. I can't remember the name but it did not disappoint. It was just sweet enough! We will be back.

The food was amazing! Some of the best Pho and rice with pork chop with an egg on top!!!

One of my favorite Asian places in Memphis! I know that's not saying much considering this city has a severe lack of good Asian food, but it really was tasty. My boyfriend ordered the pho and now he won't stop nagging me to go back for more! I had one of the lunch specials with beef and snow peas. It was reasonably priced and the perfect portion. I'll definitely be back!

This update is loooong overdue, and my apologies to Phuong Long for leaving them at 3 stars for so long! This is my favorite restaurant in Memphis, hands down. I'm in here a few times a month (at least) ordering a feast. There are so many delicious things to choose from! Some of my must-haves: - fried egg rolls. THE BEST. Ask nicely and they will happily bring out some extra lettuce and cilantro so you can roll them up authentic-style. - hot wings. I swear, they make them a little differently each time I get them, but they are always fantastic. - fried squid with ginger and jalapeño. Unbelievably good. Brought my dad here last November and he ordered this. Since then, I have gotten it as part of my meal EVERY time. It is THAT good! Comes with a tasty sweet chili dipping sauce, though I like it must as much plain or in the fish sauce dressing that comes with the egg rolls. - crispy pan fried noodles. Hard to describe...they basically take noodles and fry them into a pancake shape, then cut the pancake into pieces and toss them in a stir fry. An amazing combination of crispy and chewy. It's on the menu as a seafood combo, but I prefer it with just pork and beef. - lo mein. NOTHING like the insipid versions found elsewhere. They use fresh egg noodles that are chewy and delicious. I don't like lo mein at other places, but this is one of my fave dishes. - lemongrass tofu. Crispy and flavorful. Even if you think you don't like tofu, you might find out differently if you try this! - soups! I've tried several varieties and they are all good. I love that they will serve my raw beef and pho noodles on the side so nothing gets overcooked or mushy. The bun Bo hue is fantastic, as is the more delicate bun rien. Haven't had soup in a while because it's been so hot, but I'm looking forward to some bowls when the weather cools down. Ok...this should be enough to get you started!! This place is a GEM, and I urge you to give it a go! Ask Scott for recommendations if you need any help! :)

I don't usually stray from my beloved Pho Binh, but Phuong Long did not disappoint!! Came here for the first time for lunch and left happy and ready for a nap! They had a great menu of lunch specials for only $6.99 but I decided on the pho ga (chicken). It came out quickly, piping hot and with all the condiments. I didn't really like the chicken itself but flavor of the broth was amazing! Basically burned my tongue because I couldn't wait long enough for it to cool. The rice noodles were soft and perfect in the pho. My husband's fave Vietnamese dish is bo luc lac (marinated beef cubes with salad) and I think Phuong Long is the best place to try it in Memphis! Overall definitely a winner in my book. Can't wait to try other dishes and the bubble tea!

My husband and I have been wanting to try this place but I was leery. I was actually pretty leery until we started eating. The spring rolls were prepared perfect and comparable to all our favorites. Then we got our main course and it was wonderful! I had the combination vermicelli and it had lots of different flavor that married well together. My husband got the bbq pork chop plate with egg and a meat patty. He loved it and said this is his new favorite spot on Cleveland. We will definitely go back to try more!!!

We happened into Phuong Long on a Sunday morning. We wanted to check out Al-Rayan, at the end of the strip of shops. It was closed, but we looked down the row and saw about a dozen minivans, each belonging to Vietnamese families. We decided to check the place out. On the first visit we had Pho, Banh Mi, and Vermicelli. The kids (2 and 5) loved the Pho, and consistently ask for it. We absolutely love this place. Great service from Tony, the owner, and Scott, a longtime restaurant worker who knows his food and works to get to know customers preferences. Scott will listen to what you like, ask about what you have had before, and make recommendations. He has led us off the menu several times, and we have enjoyed it. Personal favorites include the lemongrass, rangon (tofu, crab, shrimp, lobster), vermicelli, Pho, and Banh Mi. We see a lot of Vietnamese patrons ordering the crepe/pancake dishes, but we keep forgetting to try them.

I loved the decor, the wait staff and the food. My new fave Vietnamese food restaurant First I ordered the tofu spring rolls that were very big and loaded with veggies! Then I ordered the Sesame Tofu and it came with broccoli. The whole dish was tender and so delicious. My BFF had the Mongolian tofu which he described as just the perfect amount of spicy! I also noticed that they have food available for express takeout. I would've tried the bubble tea but they use half/half cream instead of coconut water/milk. I would recommend this place to my friends! I forgot to say something about the stage. There are bands that play there too but I didn't see the line-up, so I may check that out online.

I had the vermicelli chicken. Amazing!!!! And the spring rolls. Oh my soooo good! Wait staff was nice and attentive, it's huge and could easily host a big group. I will be back! Update: Had the shrimp vermicelli tonight. Amazing as well!

The replacement to Pho Vietnam... as everyone else has said. When Pho Vietnam on Poplar closed (and was subsequently torn down within weeks?!), I went into a bit of a pho depression. I tried some other places, but it just didn't work out. But now, all has returned to normal with Phuong Long. Fresh spring rolls? Nailed it. Not on the menu but always available to order the Pork with Shrimp pho? Absolutely. It's all of the great things about the food from P.V. that went missing, and that is great. I recommend ordering exactly what I've just stated there, because I can't recommend anything else... because that's all I get. They lack the 5 star mark simply because they don't pack the house like P.V. did, and there's just something about the interior that is too cold and misses a bit of the awkward charm I want from a good Southeast Asian restaurant... but that's fine with me, because my Pho is back, and life is good.

Love this place! Our first try for Vietnamese and we've been back 4 times in the last two months! Scott is a great server and really lead us into it well! The spring rolls are fresh and delicous! The Pho with beef brisket and the accompanying garnishes are an amazing combination of tastes in one bowl. The food is plentiful. A must try!

Pho was good compared to the places I've been to in Memphis, but average to above average compared some of my favorite Pho places in Nashville (Kien Giang and Vinh Long) and in Atlanta. The soup was flavorful.

Now that Pho Vietnam is closed, where do I go? Phuong Long! That's where! And looks like most of the employees from Pho Vietnam did too! Phuong Long is under new management. I've asked if it's the same owners from Pho Vietnam, they, however, told me no. BTW, easily one of the best service from a Vietnamese restaurant in this town. What I typically get from a Vietnamese place to get a good idea of whether a place is good is Pho Tai, Bun Bo Hue, Spring Rolls, Egg Rolls (mini if they have it), Vietnamese Crepe, pork chops, and Banh Mi! Luckily, I've now tried all these items, so here come the reviews. First, with nearly every Vietnamese noodle soups, you would find collection of garnishes that you apply yourself. If you want a little more basil, you put in more basil. And the Phuong Long collection is certainly bigger if not the biggest in town. There are the typical Thai basil, cilantro, culantro, lime, jalapeno, and beans spouts. And they also have onions and mint, and 2 other herbs I don't know the English name of a short thin leaf and a big green sometime purple leaf (which I have in my own backyard). I will update the names later once I find out! I'm a lover of noodle soups, and by no mean am I an expert. But I do dibble in making my own different varieties of noodle soups. (I'm trying to sound humble...) The broth here is not as sweet as it was over at Pho Vietnam, and it's much more flavorful than Saigon Le, their closest competitor. It is also more greasy than Pho Saigon and Green Bamboo. But sometimes grease is GOOD. What's a bacon with no grease, am I right? Although I honestly can't tell you which is my favorite between the three because I do enjoy a lighter taste sometimes, I can tell you that if you like a heavier flavor, this is definitely a good place. Pho Tai is the most basic of all Vietnamese noodles. It's a rice noodle soup topped with thinly sliced raw beef where the hot broth will do the cooking. I don't have any complaints here. Bun Bo Hue is a more advanced soup. It's got beef, pork, pork blood cake, pork feet, and it's spicy. Currently, I would say that they have the best Bun Bo Hue in this town. Being allergic to shellfish (but still being forced to eat lots of them when I was younger which somewhat got me used to it), I can detect freshness of shellfish like shrimp very easily. For the spring rolls, the shrimp could definitely be fresher. I don't have much complaints about the eggrolls or the crepes. The Banh Mi is pretty horrible here. I would not repeat. The pork chops, clearly one of the most popular items here if you're here when the restaurant is packed, is so-so. The pork chop is char sui style. But I wish there was more char sui sauce. I also didn't detect very much lemongrass on the pork tenderloin on the vermicelli, but I would be surprised if lemongrass in not there at all. I wish there was more. Nothing else disappoints, other than the screaming children running around all over the restaurant... They sometimes have cold items for sell on the side. I once for got some sticky rice with dried shrimp and char sui pork. It was pretty awesome. I've never seen it again. Phuong Long definitely took Pho Vietnam's spot in my Memphis Pho Trinity. And if you like service at a Vietnamese restaurant, you now only have here and Green Bamboo.

I was forced to cheat on my beloved Pho Binh today due to an issue with their power, so I decided to try this place. It did not live up to the glory of Pho Binh. To begin with, the place looks strange and had an odd mixture of decor. We were the only ones there, which always makes me feel awkward. The waiter did not speak English very well at all. I attempted to ask what was in the spring rolls, but it wasn't going well. Once it was established there was no pork in them, I decided to go ahead and order them. They came with shrimp, which I do not eat. The lemon grass tofu was good, but again didn't measure up to Pho Binh.

I think my quest for awesome Asian cuisine in Memphis may have come to an end -- this place was awesome!! Like another reviewer, I saw this place while driving by on Cleveland and decided to check it out one night. It appears to have recently undergone new management so I would disregard the negative reviews posted circa 2011-12. There were no menus online so I asked for a take-out menu. They don't have the take out menu finalized yet, but a very sweet man gave me a copy of a hand written draft so I could call and order again. The bonuses: 1. Is bright and clean (which is not the vibe I get over on Madison or Poplar) 2. Impressive, authentic menu with good selection of items. Tends to stick to more traditional Vietnamese items rather than be an amalgam of Asian cuisines (as is the fail of other local places that try to do too much). 3. Food was fresh, FLAVORFUL, authentic (Ordered 1 app and 3 mains and all were great) 4. Friendly staff -- I walked in for take out and the man at the counter directed me to an item he liked a bit more than what I had selected 5. Reasonable prices Negatives: Nothing really. Ambiance is similar to other Vietnamese spots in town (but cleaner and brighter as noted above). During my visit I was the only customer who did not speak/understand Vietnamese, I take this to be a very good sign !!

Came here on a Saturday night, wanting to try a new Vietnamese restaurant in the city. I have my couple of favorites that are my go-to's. And I have to say, after reading some of the reviews of this place, I was a little skeptical to try it out. But I was not disappointed at all. In fact, Phoung Long might just be my new favorite. The restaurant was quite large and very clean. Our waiter quickly greeted us and he spoke fluent English (a previous reviewer had some language barriers so I felt this was necessary to address). We ordered spring rolls and hot tea to start. Both came out very quickly and both were amazing. The spring rolls were very well stuffed. No skimpy rolls here. And the peanut sauce was plentiful and fresh. For dinner, I ordered the bun vermicelli with grilled pork and my date ordered the chicken pho. Both were excellent. Fresh beyond belief. I'm not sure where the person who wrote the bad review was, because it definitely wasn't here. You could see the kitchen from our seat and everything was being made as we ordered it. I am usually not big on meat dishes at Vietnamese restaurants, but this pork was grilled perfectly. Even the fatty parts were good. The broth from the pho dish was super flavorful, but I loved my dish so much I was mostly focused on it. Before we left the owner gave us some samples of a large to go platter he was making and both things were delicious, though I couldn't fit much more in. Definitely give this place a try.

I eat lunch here between 2-3 times per week. It's that good. All of you Pho Vietnam fans out there should check it out. It really is as good or better. I even come here for dinner - something I never did at Pho Vietnam. Also a plus for the lunchtime crowd - service is fast and friendly. That's a combo you do not always get downtown for lunch.

Pho Vietnam used to be my go to place for all things Vietnamese. Now that they are gone, this place rules!!! This is my first time here. I ordered my old standby, beef pho and spring rolls. I think their pho broth is richer and better than any I've ever had before! Spring rolls were so fresh and so perfect!!! The service is wonderful and attentive! The restaurant is clean and pleasant! If you've never been here, you must try it!!!!

This is defiantly a Vietnamese restaurant. It was fairly busy on a New Years Day afternoon. I was alone and the only person who was not Vietnamese. The language barrier was obvious. It resulted in pointing at the menu. This is not necessarily a bad sign. It means I'm probably going to get authentic Vietnamese food. The problem was I wanted Bo Kho (Vietnamese beef stew) but the server did not understand me and said they didn't have it. So I order Pho Tai (beef noodle soup) and some spring rolls. I keep perusing the menu as I wait for my order and then I spot Bo Kho. I asked the server how to pronounce this dish as this is what I wanted. We got nowhere. Then a pleasant young woman came to my table and with a beautiful smile gave me a detailed explanation about the difference between my orders (I think, I had no clue what she said.) She spoke 100% Vietnamese. I smiled and said thank you. My spring rolls were served. They had great potential. The flavor of the roll was excellent but they were a not as fresh as I had hoped for and a bit warm. Spring rolls should be served cool and freshness is key. Still they were good and the peanut sauce served with them was excellent. My soup came soon after and with the usual side plate of fresh herbs. The herbs could have been fresher The soup was delicious. This may be the best Pho Tai I have had in Memphis and I think I have had them all. The broth was fragrant with herbs and savory in taste. The noodles were perfectly cooked I ordered a Bahn Mi (Vietnamese Sandwich) to go. Not too impressed with their version, again the bread could have been fresher. The contents of the sandwich were good but scant, I do want to go back and this time I will point to Bo Kho on the menu. It is one of my favorite all time dishes. I must try any version I find. It's a rare dish in Memphis.

Phuong Long is located at the old "My Thanh Oriental" Asian grocery store, which is now renovated to a Vietnamese restaurant. The location of this place is kinda shady, but if you can overlook the shadiness and want some ok Vietnamese food, then ok stay. Don't expect average looking people serving you either, the people here also works for the pool hall that is adjoined next door. The Bun Thit Nuong (grilled pork w/ vermicelli noodles) is fairly decent. Flavored well with a combination of a hint of fish sauce and sesame oil. Nothing about the dish that makes me want to complain nor compliment about. It was just an average typical dish you would get anywhere.

We ordered a fried quail as an appetizer and spicy lemongrass beef w/ vermicelli noodles. We loved it and the portion is generous and noodles were flavorful! We arrived around 9pm and the owner welcomed us in even though they are closing at 9:30pm. The owner/waiter was very friendly. If we were local, we will definitely come back!

I tried the Chicken and Cashew lunch entrée (a favorite of mine) at Phuong Long, and its version of it was decent. It is a nice blend of chicken, cashew nuts and vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, snow peas and onions, all mixed together in a distinctively Asian sauce. Like most Asian meals, this comes with fried rice that complemented the entrée nicely. Also included was an egg roll, which was average. Overall, the meal was okay, but I'll have to try a few of Phuong Long's other entrées before I can give a true assessment of the restaurant. However, if you decide to go there (particularly if you're getting the $3.99 lunch special), make sure that you point out on the menu what you intend to order, for most of the staff speaks very little English (when I told them that I wanted the lunch special, the waitstaff seemed confused and I almost got something I didn't want, a sandwich). Despite the difficulty in communicating, the staff was friendly and attentive, which I appreciate. Because my first experience was positive, I intend to visit again.

The ambience is nice. However, the chicken Pho soup lacked the signature chicken flavor. I have been to many Pho, restaurants in different cities. Overall ok restaurant.

I had the pho combination and combination fried rice. Pho was quite delicious; however the fried rice wasn't all that... Service was decent since I went mid afternoon...

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
