This place is great! We love the gorditas, tacos, tortas, tamales, and the weekend grilled spicy chicken! The only thing keeping it at 4 stars for me is the salsa... It has too much black pepper. I like to pick up a six pack of beer next door.

I was really impressed by this little place. It's a dive but I don't care. I like dives. It's the food that counts and they really delivered on taste and freshness. Fresh chips were served right away with three salsas. All of which were very good. We ordered way too much food but being our first visit we got carried away. Guacamole: I loved it, dining companion liked it. She is not a big cilantro fan but said it wasn't overpowering. Avocado, sour cream (?) and cilantro. So fresh, creamy and delicious. Queso fundido con rajas ( melted cheese with jalapeno.) Companion liked it, me , not so much. A bit too greasy for me. For entrees I had Pirrillada. A mixed grill of steak, pork, pulled chicken, chorizo and onion served on a sizzling skillet. This dish blew any fajitas platter I've ever been served out of the water. Plenty enough for two. Companion had a torta asada. This sandwich could easily feed two. It was huge and she reported it to be delicious and it looked so good. Prices are very reasonable Yes, we'll be back but wise enough to share next time.

Holy smokey chicken! I tried Los Picosos last Saturday and had some of that spicy, smokey chicken they are becoming known for, and I was back again a week later for more. It is SO good! Sorry, Dad, but you are no longer the grilled chicken master - you have been usurped! I also tried a few other items that were excellent, though the chicken is the star. The choriqueso is very good, with hot melted cheese that makes long strings as you take some. I love that! I also like that the put a corn tortilla underneath to soak up some of the grease and take the heat. It gets really burnt, so I don't recommend eating it. (Yeah, I tried. Not good.) They will bring out flour tortillas or corn to eat with the cheese. The flour tortillas are the best! They look and taste homemade. The alambres are also very good, and a HUGE portion. I sampled the mix (pick 2 meats) with asada and pastor. It was phenomenal. Also served with tortillas. Los Picosos also has agua frescas, with flavors that vary. So far I've had canteloupe, mango, and hibiscus. The hibiscus is the really winner. I've never tried it before and was expecting a flowery taste, but it's more of a berry-type flavor. VERY tasty! Negatives: EXTREMELY sad bathrooms. The toilet in the women's is on it's last legs, and the bathrooms are not well-maintained. This place is a dive in the extreme. I really don't mind the dive atmosphere, but I at least want a clean bathroom with a working toilet! Salsa is good with a nice kick, but really thin. Tacos were just so-so. Had better elsewhere. Chicken breasts were a little dry on both visits. Next time I'm going to see if I can just get dark meat. Overall, I highly recommend you check this place out. Even if you just pick up a chicken to-go, ya gotta give it a try! (Note: only served on weekends, which is why I had to wait a whole week to get my fix!)

After four years of searching, I'm happy to say the phrase, "I FINALLY FOUND GOOD, AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD IN MEMPHIS!" (Insert sound bite of crowd cheering and me waving my arms in the air with excitement) Los Picosos was filled with regulars who were hanging out, eating food and watching soccer, err sorry, futbol on the TVs. There were two waitresses taking orders and running food. I had the chicken fajitas, which were absolutely delicious and the best I've had in Memphis. Not greasy and perfectly seasoned. They offer flour or corn tortillas, and the fajitas come with all the usual sides. I had so much food left over, that I ended up with about 2-3 meals. It was like the gift that kept on giving. Another highlight was the salsa selection - it was on another level. They had a mild/med/hot, but really it was one medium, one hot, and one burn your mouth off. Great smokiness and flavor in every fire-filled bite, served with warm, salty tortilla chips. The decor is in no way fancy (people, this is not where you would take a date you're trying to impress...it's more like a place you would take someone where you don't want to be seen by people you know). Good for a casual bite for lunch with friends when you're running errands in your sweatpants. FYI-The waitress said they smoke their chicken in-house with Mexican spiced...she said that's what they were known for. I'll be back to try that next time...along with the rest of the menu.

Menu Items I LOVE: Mango Agua Fresca: It think its the best Mango-flavored agua fresca I've ever had Smoked Chicken: This item is only available on the weekend and it is AMAZING! Order the half chicken and you will be delighted. The portion is large enough for a big appetite. Asada Burrito: YUMMY! I love to add plenty of green sauce to mine. The flcors are outta sight. Cautionary note: I do not like the tacos here. You should stick to their other items because that's where they really shine. The food is prepared quickly and deliciously, and it is inexpensive!

My wife was across the street from this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon and saw a line of people out the door and she could smell smoked meat coming from the back. This is a good sign that the food would be good. She walked in and saw that everyone was ordering the Pollo al Carbon (Smoked Chicken). She picked up the whole chicken to go which included beans, rice, chips, tortillas, salsa(s), and some kind of slaw salad. This was about $20 and more that we both could finish. We went back a couple of weeks later to get another order. This is served only on Saturdays. Yesterday I met some friends there and ordered the steak and mushroom burrito. It was huge. I took half of it home. To say it was delicious would be an understatement. The chorizzo burrito was not near as good. This place looks what an authentic Mexican restaurant should look like. The food is outstanding and it's a good value for the price. The handicap entrance is locked. I knocked on the door only to have a customer tell me that the door was locked. I KNOW THAT, IDIOT! Finally the owner came and unlocked the door and held it open because the hinges are off the frame. I will to back. Often.

Went here for lunch today after a friend recommended... Wow. Great salsa and queso, fast service, and my chorizo burrito was delicious. When I got my check? 13 dollars for salsa chips queso a soda and a burrito! Definitely will be returning to this gem on summer avenue.

The bright orange building on Summer... how on earth has it taken me this long to give this place a try? Immediately became my favorite Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa were very good. Three types of salsa, at that. The Coke is the glass bottle type from Mexico. So good. No need to repeat what other reviewers have said about the different items they serve, but I will say that the burrito I ordered was fantastic and huge. Not really like any burrito I have ever had. It wasn't smothered in sauce or cheese. It was just awesome. The menu is not overwhelming. The service was nice. Food isn't on your table strangely fast like at other Mexican places. Not to say they are slow. You can easily feed a couple for under $20. Too bad they don't serve alcohol...but that is no reason to take anything away from this place.

Absolutely the best. The servers are kind, very little english is spoken here. The best mexican food to be found anywhere nearby. Traditional mexican, none of this tex-mex stuff... This ain't Chili's....

I do NOT recommend this place. The food wasn't that great. The restaurant was very dirty. All the vacant tables were dirty. The service was slow. I ordered sweet tea to drink and it tasted like dirty mop water. I will never eat here again.

Exactly the type of Mexican food you would hope to eat. I ordered the tripitas (fried tripe or cow's intestine) and they were great. This is no steam table-served, typical Mexi-wanna-be restaurant with fish-bowl sized sweet drinks. Los Picosos is authentic, affordable, and is worth the patronage AND the one dozen tamales to go that I ordered after being so impressed.

She said: Muy delicioso! The salsas were well-balanced, tasty (the standard salsa was very flavorful, the verde was tastefully muted and slightly spicy, and the habanero? salsa was a little smoky and a little more warm -- these three salsas served different purposes, adding a nice variety to the table), and plentiful (salsa served in carafes and fat squeeze bottles). Burritos were LARGE (practically the size of an infant), so I ate half and gave away half for my hungry handsome man to devour. I appreciated having rice and beans on the side so I could really enjoy the meat with lettuce/onion/tomato/cilantro etc. on their own. I got the Picosos Burrito, which had a generous portion of asada and pastor, which were very flavorful, juicy, and grilled to perfection. The only shortcoming with the burrito was that there did not seem to be any jalapenos inside as promised (was that because I am a gringo and do not look like I handle heat?? I eat habaneros, baby!). So far, the best mexican I have tasted outside of right north of the border (i.e., San Diego). Addicting. Their burritos and salsas will be floating around in my dreams for sure. He said: Infant-sized burritos are my favorite kind. The sauces were very tasty and went great on our burritos. I stuffed myself to capacity and waddled out. I also saw the weirdest pregame show for a soccer game ever: two squads of guys dressed up like knights and charged at each other as part of a huge choreographed routine. I'd definitely recommend.

We just moved to this area and the aroma coming from this place was the draw this Sunday morning. We were amidst the Latino community at this quaint eatery. The to go line was steady throughout our meal all Latino's which to us indicates we are about to experience authentic Mexican food. Our assumptions, thankfully, were spot on. The complimentary chips and salsa was very good (less chunky than I like, but tasty). Our boys split the Chicken quesadilla and it was more than enough for the 5 and 7 year olds to share. My Husband had the Picosos Burrito (Beef/pork/jalapeno) and it was delicious. I went with the Cubana Topas (chicken/pork/ham) and it was equally satisfying. The tacos were awesome and packed full of perfectly seasoned and cooked meats and fresh tortillas. The sauces (one tomato based hot sauce the other jalapeno based hot sauce) add just the heat needed to kick it into perfection. I am a huge fan of El 7 Mares but this place beats them on flavor portion size and cost. We didn't try the tamales on this visit (the to-go orders consisted of a great many tamales leaving the building during our visit) so for now Best tamales is gonna be La Guadalapana but I have a feeling Picosos is gonna take 'em down. I was on the phone immediately calling several friends and family members spreading the word of my new fav place to eat...Picosos the ugliest building on Summer Avenue just look for the bright orange building!

Pure Awesomeness!!! This is one of, if not the best, authentic mexican restaurant in the city of Memphis ! Everything is seasoned perfectly, the food is fresh, and the portions are huge! I would recommend the guacamole and a steak gordita...or try the weekends when they fire up the smoke pit grill, delicious ! You can also feed a small army for less than $20. Try it out and you will be glad you did.

I came once with a group but I wasn't all that impressed with the food. Also, they don't serve alcohol. Luckily, a liquor store is like right next door, so they let my friends go buy some and bring it in. I'd actually forgotten about this place because it just wasn't memorable. I'm sorry but I'm not likely to try it again.

I was craving Mexican food one night, so I ventured to the area of Memphis that seems to be the mecca of Mexican: Summer Avenue. Summer has some of the greats, so I could only assume there were more undiscovered gems to discover. I stopped at Taqueria Los Picosos. This place seemed very authentic to me. Everything was written in Spanish. From the signs outside to the menus inside, not one word of English could be found (minus the "OPEN" sign outside). There were also lots of handwritten signs on the windows and walls. I could only hope they weren't about a food born illness of some sort. The place looks like your average Mexican joint: hard booths. colorful walls, etc. You order from the counter and they bring it to you. They started us out with your usual chips and salsa. They were good, but pretty average. The chips were thin. The salsa was very sweet, with not much kick. We also ordered guacamole, as I am a guacamole fiend. It was also pretty average. Not much flavor other than the avocado was present. I was hoping for some more pepper, onion, and/or tomato. For dinner, Scott opted for the Steak Fajitas. They came out on a sizzling skillet. They were huge! He said they were pretty good, with a lot of flavor. The peppers and onions tasted fresh. I ordered the Chicken Quesadilla, mainly because I knew what I was ordering. I wasn't in an adventurous pick-something-off-the-menu-then-find-out-later-what-it-is mood. Mine was also gigantic. The quesadilla, rice, and beans tasted just like something you would find at El Porton or El Mezcal. It was decent, but it didn't knock my socks off. In the end, we boxed up over half of our food to go. They don't want you to leave hungry, that is for sure. I don't know if I will be back to Los Picolos, especially if I have options like Las Delicias. If am in the area again and super hungry, though, it might be worthwhile to stop in and share something.

If you have read my reviews you will know I like small mom and pop places. Well this is as mom and pop as it gets, an old Taco Bell location that is nothing too much to look at inside or out. What they do offer is really, really good food. The burrito huevo con jamon is maybe one of the best things I have ever eaten at a Mexican restaurant. The tamales are great and the cheese and jalapeno is especially good. On the weekends they grill whole chickens and they are tender, flavor full, and priced right. The guac is great, the gorditas are $2.99 and almost too much too eat in one setting, and this is just a small sampling of the large menu. Over all this is one of my favorite places to eat and is probably second to none for a great value. I could go on and on about this place but I would say go eat there soon! Keep in mind it's in an old Taco Bell on Summer ave, and it is family run so it's a little different experience every time you go, but I have never been and not enjoyed it.

since moving to the summer avenue area, i've been trying to hit as many of the wonderful restaurants around as possible and this past saturday we tried los picosos for lunch. the service was efficient and friendly. and the salsa was not spicy - a bit on the sweeter side. i enjoyed it. we ordered guacamole - which may have just consisted of avocado (which is fine with me!) it was flavorful and fresh. the portions are huge. unless you want leftovers, try and split your order with someone. for my meal, i had the mushroom burrito and it was good, but nothing to write home about. los picosos seems like a step up from el porton, but not much of one. i would go back if someone i was with wanted to go, but it otherwise won't be a destination for me. also worth mentioning, i have become quite the margarita fan. and i'm sad to report i don't think they sell any alcohol at all at los picosos.

AWESOME food and big bang for the buck! Some of the best Mexican in Memphis. Their burritos are massive and I always leave with a to-go box. They also bring you three types of salsa to play with before your meal. People are freindly and you can usually catch some futbol! Definitely give this place a try!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
