We went for lunch today and admittedly, we were throwing a few unusual requests at our waiter. When he sighed, one of us asked if we were wearing him out, and he said "Yes"! We were shocked! The food was good, my only complaint was that the sauce on my mushroom steak off the lunch menu was a little watery. The chips and salsa were great, and the portions are huge, so bring your appetite, and don't annoy your waiter.

Save time and money and eat at Taco Bell next door. This establishment was very dirty and the food was not good at all except the white cheese dip. I had a chicken fajita quesadilla and the meat was chewy, and the tortilla was stale. We were there for my Mother's Day and had 5 adults and 5 kids in our party. It took over 45 minutes to get our food once we put in our order and the waiter only showed up 2 times between when we put in our order and received our food. The restaurant was only about half full so the kitchen wasn't slammed as you'd expect to wait that long for food at a Mexican restaurant. Save time and money and do not go to this place.

The food and atmosphere is great! Loved it. Where things go sour is the SERVICE. If you have a party of 6 or more there is an automatic gratuity applied to your check. Not a problem. The problem comes along when your waiter has terrible service because they know they are automatically getting a nice tip. Our waiter got a $30 tip, and did NOT deserve it. He barely came to out table. Secondly, my twin sister and I came to Happy Mexican to celebrate our birthday with the family. Food was great, service was bad. I accidentally left my birthday card on the table, which had a $25 gift card in it. When i returned to retrieve the card, i didn't look at it, i just put it in my bag. Bad choice! When i finally looked, the card was not in there. It had been stolen, presumably by the wait staff. When i called to speak with management, I got a rude manager who barely wanted to hear my story. I will be contacting MPD and reporting my card stolen, the manager refused to do any sort of investigation into the matter. I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK ANYTIME SOON!!! BAD SERVICE ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Sucks because the food was great.

    A) the food is not good. Everything tastes like it's been under a heat lamp for a couple of hours. The mixed drinks give you diabetes. B) Service was horrible. The guy that waited on us (group of about 6) was super rude. Unfortunately I couldn't talk to the manager since he was the manager (I felt like I was at pop-copies). I never plan on going back to this place and advise everyone to stay away from it.

I have to say this place has gone downhill. I've enjoyed it in the past, but every time I visit (2 to 3 times a year), it's a little worse. I won't be going back. Most recently, on a lunch time visit, I ordered the black bean soup, only to be told about 10 minutes later that they were out (At noon on a Tuesday? And why did it take 10 minutes to figure it out?). I then ordered the veggie quesadilla. It was one flour tortilla folded in half with way too many mushrooms, a ton of refried beans and a little cheese. Nothing else. The accompanying guacamole was room temperature & looked oily. i love guacamole, but didn't touch it after my initial taste. The plate had 2 scoops of sour cream --not sure why--and no pico de gallo. The dish did not taste good at all. The cheese dip & salsa were OK, but I will not be going back to the Happy Mexican again --no matter which location. And I wonder if I'll ever learn my lesson. All of these places; El Toro Loco, El Porton, El Mezcal, The Happy Mexican, etc. serve consistently bland & tasteless food that costs a lot more than it's worth.

I absolutely love Mexican food! The biggest issue I have with most Mexican restaurants are the chips, but Happy Mexican has some of the best chips and tastiest salsa in town! I did enjoy the food, and the price was fine. Food was served quickly, and our waitress was attentive. I was disappointed, though, that as I sat enjoying my margarita, I noticed that the place needs a deep cleaning ... nothing hurts an appetite like a less-than-clean eating area. I wonder if that is why the lights are so low.... I am sure that I will be back, but can someone please take care of that dust situation??

Horrible food all around. The chips are burnt and the shrimp tastes like it came from some vietnamese sewer. There was nothing impressive about this place. The salsa tasted like something out of a can that had been spilled in a liquer well. Typical chain place. You are way better off going to taco bell, the quesoritos are pretty good there.

So... I driven by a few times and always thought it smelled heavenly. Stopped in and I thought the food was pretty good, above average I would say. The service however was awful, "happy" was most definitely NOT a word I would use to describe our server. The booth was uncomfortable and just felt odd, I'm not sure I would give the place a second go round with all the other options in the area.

Nice place to enjoy mexican dishes. Good atmosphere, and food ! One of my favorite places to enjoy a mexican dinner

This place has a great margarita! The staff is very friendly and the food is very good. Like most Mexican restraunts the food is somewhat bland, but good. The salsa is excellent. Very much recommended

    1. The place has security present like diamonds are being sold. It's a moderately priced Mexican restaurant, so what's that about??? 2. If you have a party of 4 or more they hold your credit card or license before seating the party. 3. When I asked for a taco I was told this place isn't like taco bell. DUH!!! It's called Happy Mexican, not Happy Taco Bell. I left offended in so many ways. I might have given this place a second chance if the food and margaritas were better, but I don't play that game for 1 step above average Mexican food. Not going back.

This place is pretty inexpensive in my opinion. They have some great happy hour specials and some great drinks. Get a jumbo margarita and you will be feeling the effects soon enough. The food here was just ok.

Loud restaurant that has a ghetto club vibe. Food was edible but nothing special at all. I had carne asada tacos. They were served on flour tortillas, which wasn't what I expected. Meat was grey and not seasoned well. The drinks were bad. I had a top shelf margarita. Since when is Jose Cuervo top shelf? Anyway, I probably sound like a snob but there are so many places that are better than this. The other patrons seemed to be having a good time listening to the loud loud rap music and socializing. Oh and the restaurant had 2 security guards on duty. That should give you an idea about the clientele. I won't be back.

Plus- It's close to my hotel. They do have traditional tacos- if you ask. Miller Lite is cheap- don't bother looking for bourbon, I drank every last bit. Minuses- I'm here for the bar- so I'll hang at the bar. Here is where the Happy Mexican has an identity crisis. Most nights (I've been here 6 of the last 7) the bar quickly turns into a rap nightclub. Complete with folks hollering and screaming, and songs with words that should not be played. After all, they are a "family restaurant" according to the sign on the door. "We have the right to refuse service to anyone- remember this is a FAMILY restaurant!" Most times- there's folks that are feeling the same problems as me- you get sympathetic looks, and an occasional eye roll. It's loud and obnoxious, most every night. They play offensive rap with lots of offensive words. But I guess I'm here for another week- where the heck else will I go for a beer?

  • Slim M.

I came here with a couple of my cousins last week while I was visiting. They made it sound as though it was a bar/lounge-type place. Once we walked in, I quickly realized it was not. lol Just a loud restaurant is what it is. There's a sign on the door that stated that there would be a 18% tip fee added to any food/drinks ordered after 10 P.M.- aww, that's sweet. Our server was average. He spoke with a thick accent and was very busy with several tables. I ordered the peach jumbo margarita, which was $11.99 and strong, may I add. I also ordered the chicken burrito, which was $8.99. Both were huge. I did not finish my meal. The food was okay as was my drink. It was pretty loud and got rambunctious at some points. It was cool, though. I'd come back....

  • Matthew D.

Ok, so the place has a very interesting decoration style and that is about the highlight of this review. The jumbo margarita is a winner, as its got a good enough kick! Seriously, this place is a bit of a disappointment aside from the margaritas. The service is ok. The food lacks seasoning and this is across the board. There is just no real flavor to anything we had: salsa, cheese dip, Camarones Happy Mexican, and Beef Fajita Quesadilla. Every dish just lacked the flavor you'd expect. Personal dislike:they use shredded lettuce as a decoration for everything... Everything! This was shaping up to be a 3 star review, but when we received our check we discovered that the waitress added a 15% gratuity to our party of two bill. I addressed this with the management who offered to pull the charge. I declined, because I just wanted out of here. Sadly the Happy Mexican is no bueno... Except for the 'ritas!

  • Erin N.

I just want to laugh at how ridiculous this place is. When you first walk in there is a sign that says it is a family friendly restaurant, but they have music so loud and bass so high that it shakes the seats. How is that family friendly? You can't even talk to the waiters without having to scream. So far the salsa is good, no salt at the table, chips are stale. Kind of annoying. Wouldn't come back. Considering walking out.

I know the history of this building. It was Grady's, then it was Cockeyed Camel (where it took a dip into the pit of nasty, and couldn't shake the scum off its cigarette leg). I have fond memories of one, but Cockeyed Camel was so heinous, it was tough to give this Happy Mexican in the same location a try. I'm so glad we did. We come on Sundays, typically, before noon, when it's not very crowded. We have had two attentive servers, who knew what we needed (refills, extra napkins, to go box). The food is fine! It's Memphis Mexican food, and the salsa is like a more tomatoey salsa from Playita Mexicana in Bartlett, with the garlic and cilantro. Their cheese dip did not lack for flavor and texture, either. Prices are fair. The decor is bright and well done, including the giant painting of the Aztec romance novel cover (or so it would look) on the kitchen wall. Avoid the restrooms, they haven't changed since Cockeyed Camel, and feel like 9 hookers were just itching down their pantyhose and tweaking their false eyelashes. Everything is just kind of wet and stinky.

Went to this establishment on last Friday 09/18/15. Hadn't been in a while so against my better judgment went with some friends. Hostess never acknowledged our prescence. Got to table and waitress took forever to come over and take our food and drink order. When she did she was rude and rushing us. Like we were on her time and she had somewhere to be. She probably already knew that she would receive a tip due to the number of people in the group. Its their policy now. 8 or more. When the food finally came it was awful. A chicken burrito with rice and beans. Beans looked like slop. The rest of the food was very tasteless. When it was time to pay out the tab. The waitress took forever to come back with our receipts. She placed the cards and other information on the table next to us where others were seated. Unprofessional to me. When I called back to voice concerns on today. The manager stated that he could vouch for all his employees and was very nonchalant about my experience there. His exact words were " do what you got to do". Believe me I will. Word of mouth is always powerful. I wouldn't recommend going there for food or service. This place sucks!!!

  • Danny H.

I have visited this place twice in the past few weeks and the food and drinks have always been good. I have never had an issue with service or cleanliness. The prices are a lot cheaper than the the nearby Salsa. I would definitely recommend checking this one out.

Happy Mexican food is always delicious. However when it's close to closing time there's a certain crowd that doesn't make the atmosphere enjoyable. Like seriously people. Let's not get drunk before going to the cantina. Also here's the greatest part ! The business also adds a percentage to your ticket if you're ticket is still open past 10pm. Which is beautiful on your pocket by the way. While enjoying my loud, obnoxious seating area would I could not hear the person across from me, I ordered a Togo order (couldn't enjoy the atmosphere no longer than needed). My ordered the happy grande burrito which is always delicious and a beef taco. When I ordered the taco, I expected a typical taco. I was all types of wrong. My taco had a good pound worth of beef on there. And it was delicious. Greasy. But delicious. I will be coming again but hopefully with the lunch crowd.

Pretty good Mexican food. I thought the Chili Relleno and tostaguac were both very good. A little pricey, but not bad. Fairly clean restaurant. Good service.

The food was pretty bland, especially for Mexican food. They can usually accommodate for large parties... but I was very confused when they asked for a credit card from someone in our party before we could be seated.

My experience here was really... Odd. Went there yesterday for a "Cinco de Mayo lunch" for food and margs. I ordered a simple shrimp dish with rice which wasn't anything special, but it was fine. My boyfriend got a combination dish which was supposed to come with a burrito, but the waiter must've forgotten about it because it only came with enchiladas and a taco when served to him. The margaritas were pretty good, I got mine frozen. So the weird part was the staff... I sat at a table outside and I felt like I saw at least 3 employees hanging out in the patio at ALL TIMES and I was there for almost two hours. I even saw the same employees come out for multiple "smoke breaks". Very unprofessional. I would give the food a 3 but the management that this place is under is very poor. 2 stars.

    (2)
  • Richard A.

They have to hold a credit card if your group is bigger than six... Such a hassle... Definitely a turnoff on coming back to dine. Two stars only because of the happy hour special and the dos equis on draft. Terrible food and customer service at this location.

I expected this place to be different from most Mexican restaurants for some reason -maybe because it's not called "Feliz Mexican." I thought the menu would have unique and creative options (kinda like Las Delicias with its sandwiches), but it was nothing too different from the norm of other good restaurants in the area like Casa Mexicana and El Mezcal ...which are arguably better. Unless I'm just near this restaurant and craving Mexican food, there's no reason for me to go back.

Food came out pretty quickly. My wife ordered shredded chicken chimichanga. Large portion size. Good Flavor. I can't remember what mine was called, but it was chicken strips and mexican sausage grilled with onions. I liked the taste of this very much. Definitely would order this again. Chips were a little too thick for our taste, but I liked the cilantro flavor of the salsa. One area of improvement I saw was that it took way too long to get the check when we were finished. Overall good experience and will come again.

Horrible service. Second time I've been here. Both times were horrible. The first time they refunded the manditory gratuity. The second time around, I paid my bill and left very unhappy. The servers there just collect their 15% manditory gratuity. I should have known better. The location downtown has good service when I go there, but the east memphis location is....ghetto. while in the restaurant, 7-10 drunk women start singing/screaming some song that they were playing on a cell phone. Neither the bartender nor the manager did anything about it.

Paid extra for something that was to come with the meal. Yet menu says they will not substitute. Waiter barely knew menu items, just smiled and said ok. Will not take family back, messy and loud. DO NOT go into the restrooms hard telling what you will walk out with!!

So we have never been huge fans of the food at this Happy Mexican, but the location is so convenient to our office that we would occasionally go anyway. Today was ABSOLUTELY the last visit, for me at least. I had previosuly heard stories from other coworkers about flies in the lettuce and other gross things, but I had not myself experienced any of them. The only thing negative about the place to me was bad food and SLOW service (of course those are two pretty important things). I have now joined the ranks of my co-workers as today in the middle of our meal a HUGE cockroach crawled across my coworkers lap/hand down onto the seat, up the seat back until they came and squished it. Ok I am not so naive to think that even 5 star restaurants don't occasionally have an unwelcome visitor, it happens...I get that. Unfortunately after they squished it, there was no apology, there was no offer to buy her lunch....there was nothing done at all...heck he didn't even really clean the area that he squished the roach. I CANNOT stress how much I do not recommend this mexican restaurant.

Well, what a suprise to find a new restaurant off Ridgeway! I of course was anxious to try it. After reading other reviews, we arrived early. As advertised, they have good early bird specials, and always seem to have a drink special. What I really liked, though, was the (must be expensive) hand carved, and hand painted chairs- every one different. I believe these chairs come from Tonala, near Guadalajara... but, they are a real treat for the eyes. The paintings, especially the Aztec warrior with the woman collapsed in his arms, are, well, larger than life. It's like Mexican culture on steroids. Squared. So, how's the service? The waiter wasn't sultry, but he surely wasn't friendly, either. On to the food. The portions (see my pics) are HUGE. But. The enchilada sauce (the red sauce) tasted, honestly, like it was out of a can. And, it was only lukewarm. The tostada and taco were, well, average fare. The beans and rice were fine. So, overall, sorry, guys, but slightly below average. I never like to leave a restaurant with a review like this, so I'm going to make it a point to go back to see if it was just a bad night for them. i SO want them to do well. Plusses? Small outdoor eating area.

This is not Mexican food. Even the fajitas (which seem impossible to make badly) did not look like or taste like Mexican food. The chicken wasn't grilled and the veggies didn't have any Mexican flavor. The tortilla soup was a giant bowl of mushrooms with beef broth. It was disgusting and was sent back. The enchilada and chile relleno were not good at all. The only decent thing I had all night was a tostada. I didn't want to go in the first place and would never go back again.

It was a good thing that people were already waiting for our arrival because the line was out the door for those waiting for a table and all bar stools were occupied. Good place for groups, bad place to come without a reservation. In fact, without a reservation, it could be quite a miserable experience. Everyone on my end of the table ordered the $7.99 Saturday night special - the ultimate margarita, which is made with Chincaco tequila. The jumbo definitely lived up to the description. I didn't need to order another drink all night. The Happy Mexican didn't offer any food specials for happy hour, but as with most Mexican places, I'm usually good with the free chips & salsa. A few people ordered a taco here or burrito there, but nothing looked extraordinary to me. The servers automatically split our checks without being asked, always a plus. However, when we wanted to order another round of drinks the server would only take orders from some and not others. He then told us that we would have to order from the bar from now on, which was clear across the restaurant. He also told us that he his shift was ending but closed us out without getting the chance to order further or intro us to a new server. This was kinda odd since they weren't asking us to give up our table to a waiting party, just to order from the bar.

I usually visit Happy Mexican once a month for Happy Hour with some coworkers. We usually each have a few margaritas and share a few appetizers. For a happy hour place, this place is great. They've got a nice little bar area and you get decent service if you sit there and don't act like a fool or come across as someone who's going to complain better than they tip. Their margaritas are well-priced and quite strong compared to some other local places. We really enjoy their Queso Flameado. I also recommend looking at their daily drink specials listed in the menu. The only thing I have to recommend against is sitting in the dining area. Every time I ask to sit in the dining area, they always seem to walk me way to the back of the restaurant and the service goes way downhill. As for their food, I think it's in line with most Mexican restaurants in the area.

So, I have read a few messages on facebook that referenced Happy Mexican. I pull into Memphis and I am starving and where do I stumble upon??? Happy Mexican of course. I notice how colorful it is. This instantly makes me feel festive. I sit at the bar and look for specials. I mean you gotta have specials. Well Happy Mexican has margarita specials daily and daily drink specials...Jackpot!! The bartender brings out warm chips and spicy salsa and I think I am in heaven...until he brings out my jumbo margarita. I love it!! This could have been my meal but I do order. The food was good..the salsa was spicy..and the margarita was right on time. I was VERY happy when I left Happy Mexican!!

So after saying I wouldn't go back, a co-worker had to go for her going away party. We were a party of 10 on a Friday at 5. I called ahead and they told us they wouldn't reserve a table for us and I confirmed that if one of us came early, we could get a table. I showed up half an hour early to be told that they wouldn't seat our party of 10 without having 8 of us there. Slowly people trickled in and we were seated at 4:45. They took us to the back of the restaurant where there were approximately 40 seats and many tables not in use. Also, they ask for a credit card to hold until all the bills have been paid (can we say they've gotten skipped out on multiple times). Our drinks took 25 minutes to arrive, cheese dip (ordered at same time) took 30 minutes. Luckily, the waiter added in his large party gratuity b/c it wasn't worth a penny over what was added in. Salsa again was good, food average, loudness was horrible (we were next to the only other party of 10+ and they had been drinking resulting in loud shrieking). If you have a large party, beware!

I heard of Happy Mexican from a couple of friends that it is a great restaurant. Great I think not. We went on a Saturday night and it was packed. I says to myself, I says "self this place must really be great because it is packed". Well when we finally get inside and seated it must have been fifteen minutes before a server showed up that I had to flag down of course. The server was great and gave great service, but the experience was just not worth it. The food was okay but it didn't call my name. My fiance would have probably given it a high score himself but they didn't have anything hot or spicy on there menu. What tha? A Mexican restaurant with no spice? The salsa came out in what looked like a dirty bowl and tasted funny, the table was sticky, and It seems that this restaurant attracts birthday parties, because there was at least three this night that played a game of who can get the loudest! Maybe some time in the far future I will try them again but as for now ........that's a negative.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
