Admittedly, the service here can inconsistent. I have had terrible meals that took forever and orders came out wrong, but I have also had wonderful servicers who were attentive, organized and efficient...so it really is just the luck of the draw. That being said, when compared to other mexican restaurants in the area, I think the the food is a little better. Also we get the lunch fajitas everywhere we go (and we go everywhere) and the quantity of steak and chicken in their lunch fajitas has more meat than the other places. Finally, when the weather is nice (like right now), they have a wonderful shaded outdoor seating area. The outdoor seating more than makes up for the occasional disorganized/slow service. All in, I would definitely recommend this place.

Good/average Tex-Mex/Mexican food. The place is clean and the location is safe-feeling. The service has always been pretty good. The music is a little loud for my taste (and it's usually a top 40 station - not Mexican music as I prefer). And the place can get pretty noisy at night. Overall, it's nothing spectacular, but it is good and reliable if you are looking for Mexican.

Quick service and a nice neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Prices are reasonable as well. Our family of three ate lunch today for $30. They had a Mexican band during lunch and have happy hour everyday from 1pm to 9pm.

Good local restaurant. Good margaritas, good food and plenty of it. some items on the menu seem a bit pricey for a Mexican restaurant. We had good food tonight, a good solid margarita, pleasantly surprised that the margarita was a special. There was a band there. Nothing special, but real live music. We ate in the other half of the restaurant as we were on a bit of a timetable. We'd like to come back and camp some time when we can spend the time.

I will never eat at El Toro Loco Mexican Bar & Grill ever, ever in my life due to the worst customer service that I ever experience and that nasty ASS burrito. Waiter didn't ask me and my friend, do you need a refill in beverages. And my food was brought twice they still couldn't get the shit right. You wanna know what this stupid ass waiter said to me.....you done ate half of the burrito you must pay. I looked at that crazy Mothetrucker-and told "I'm trying to stay calm" But in my mind I was cursing that man out! I Hate That Place. Now that's my review. I tried to call the number back to the restaurant I got a country club-fake number. I should have called the police on his AZZ.

I like this place. It can be a fun dinner/date place or a good lunch place -- lunches hover mostly in the five dollar range, which is perfect for me. And if you want little extras, like a taco, it's only $1.75. Not too shabby. They have a great menu, filled with the usual tacos, chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, tortilla soups, etcetera. The food is fresh and good. The service is friendly -- I've always left happy.

I live super-close to this restaurant, so it is often a quick, last-minute stop for us. The food is pretty standard Mexican restaurant food (not a bad thing at all). Here are some of the things that make this place a winner: 1. Tacos puros 2. Kids eat free during the week and 3. A pitcher (yes, pitcher) of ice cold Dos XX for like $9.

  • David J.

Went on a Sunday afternoon, the service was absolutely terrible. The chips and salsa were good but it took us 20 minutes to get a refill on the chips. We had to stop another waiter to get any more service. We ordered chimichangas and when they came out we noticed that they weren't fried. When we asked why, the waitress informed us that the lunch chimichangas were not fried. So, in essence, the lunch chimichangas are burritos. The food was mediocre, service terrible. We will not go back and waste any more money there.

The service here has always been very good and friendly. The queso and quesadillas are awesome, but not my absolute favorite in Memphis. The clean, laid back, and diverse atmosphere is something that makes this place ideal for families AND happy hour patrons alike (and they do have a nice happy hour). It may not be the #1 best Mexican restaurant in Memphis, but it's pretty damn close.

Ok.... Steak quesadilla is on point! Cheap and good! Chips and salsa are good. Service is hilarious! The server was super attentive (great!). However, he could never remember who ordered what. It's hard to fault him, because of his attentiveness. Four stars may be generous, because they had no liquor license for 14 days, so no margaritas. So.... food is good. service is fun(ny). Price is good. I got over the no margaritas, because beer was 99 cents!

  • Chris M.

Wrong. This place used to be edible with decent service a few years back. Not any more. Waiters told is margaritas were $4 at happy hour then charged us $9. First time in the place in a year or so and will be my last. Too many good places to eat with good staff to eat at a dump like this.

This restaurant has consistently good Mexican food and drinks. The service is always pleasant and fast. Sometimes the clientele can get a little loud. Nice outdoor patio, balloon lady, and live bands. Quick place to come for lunch, too.

5 stars for the happy hour and Friday night live music set. After the live music, the restaurant turns into a club...a real club...complete with paying a cover to get in. 2 stars for the crappy service you get when there is even a hint of a crowd. My advice, eat before you come if you want to enjoy the live music. Try to grab a seat at the bar and enjoy the wonderfully strong margaritas they have.

I enjoy coming here to their bar during their happy hour. They usually offer regular and flavored margaritas under $5.49 and trust me they are huge. Their beers on tap are budweiser, bud light, Dos xxx amber and lager, blue moon, and michelob. I really like their shrimp and chicken fajitas and their enchiladas. All in all, this is a nice restaurant however it has very dark lighting and for me I like to see my food without straining my eyes.

    (3)
  • Shaun B.

I came here because my girlfriend was craving fajitas nachos and had never tried this establishment. We walk in and it looked like your typical chain Mexican restaurant, except a lot darker; I was not a fan of the lack of lighting. We got the fajitas nachos to split and sadly, they were even below the standard for chain Mexican establishments, which I personally feel are not up to par with local establishments. This was also at a higher price nonetheless. The meat was rather bland in flavor and the whole thing just tasted funky. The chips and salsa were good and their service was good, but overall this experience did not make me want to come back; especially when there are other notable Mexican establishments in the area. If you're craving authentic Mexican, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

Totally lame. Margaritas were horrible & the waitress had no idea what top shelf was. Very disappointing. Will not be returning

Ordered a few chimichangas from here, to go, expecting deliciousness due to the high rating from other Yelpers. Instead, we got the chimi's delivered in a way that we were not accustomed to. They were not fried and sinking in a cheese sauce. A bit disappointing, but I guess we should have asked if they were fried or not. The rice was a bit salty and coarse. The beans were good, just beans though. Another thing, we ordered the chimichungas all chicken, but got beef, shrimp and chicken. I guess its not much to complain about, but its not what we wanted. Lesson learned, always ask if the chimichungas are fried or in the cheese sauce.

I love Mexican food. It is my favorite! Being from Southern California, I have eaten my fair share of Mexican food. I was scared moving to Tennesse, wondering if they would have Mexican food. There is TONS of choices out here. However, this place falls short of my expectations. I have been here multiple times due to the convenient location, however I have been searching for other places. The prices used to be fair for what you were getting. $10 for fajitas with $1.50 soda fountain is great! They changed that. Prices on my fajitas went about $3 higher. Sodas went higher also. They use ground beef in the enchiladas unless you specify. Yuck! The service STINKS. Every time we go it's bad service. Sometimes they want to charge me for the diablo salsa, sometimes they don't. They NEVER ask if my 3-year-old wants a drink or something to eat. They don't even act like she is at the table. She never gets a place setting either. Half the time I end up getting up to pour my own iced tea out of the pitchers they have at the server station because the server never comes around. Since the unjustified huge price increase, we have been going to other places.

El Toro Loco is a great restaurant. The service is great and so is the food. Try the guacamole! Sometimes they even have a mariachi band. Go try one of the lunch specials for am even cheaper option. In my opinion, this place is way better than El Porton and you get more food for your money. An outdoor patio is available to dine on as well.

El Toro Loco is owned by the same folks who run Mi Pueblo. The atmosphere is more laid-back and toned-down than Mi Pueblo, and offers drinks. Good quality Mexican food, but I don't know if I detect that much of a difference from Mi Pueblo. Also, no buffet bar, all a la carte.

The music on Sunday nights is fun as is their afternoon happy hour. Many friendly people and you can easily strike up a conversation. There are so many great choices. The only meal I tried that I really didn't care for were the chimichangas. Like another poster said, they were swimming in cheese sauce. Just not my preference. I like the fact that they seem to use lots of fresh produce and especially peppers in their dishes. Standouts that I have tried include the following: Appetizers: choriqueso grill, Tampico dip, and the cielo, mar y Tierra dip which included steak, chicken, & shrimp smothered in cheese dip & Pico de gallo. That was really a meal in itself even though we shared it. Meals: Arroz con pollo, the chicken soup, & queso fundido. I tried the molcajetes and especially enjoyed the grilled cactus that came with it. Again all the dinners are huge and you end up taking food home. The service always seems to be lacking. Whether the place is packed or there is only a handful. But convenience and good food wins out in this case. We will definitely be back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
