I love hipster coffee shops. I didn't enjoy City and State. $4.25 is the cheapest pour-over? That's higher than even the most expensive places in San Diego and Philadelphia. For such a price, I'm expecting outstanding quality. Both the espresso and the pour-overs were okay, but not worth the price. I prefer Tamp and Tap's slightly cheaper but just as good pour-overs and Avenue Coffee has almost the same quality for a fraction of the price. Just based on the quality for price, it's a 3-star place. But the biggest problem is that all of the seating is amazingly uncomfortable. The oddly high stools fit very awkwardly under their tables and force you to basically crouch while sitting on the already uncomfortable metal or wood stool seats. Sit for more than a few minutes and your back is going to feel it. I get the idea that coffee shops don't want people to linger forever, but if you're going to charge people $5 for coffee and have such a relatively large space, it might make sense to have some comfortable seating areas coupled with the stools. #CraftCoffee can be done much better.

This is my favorite space in Memphis. I'm so glad City & State finally opened up here because we desperately needed a coffee shop like this in Memphis. What makes it even better than a typical coffee shop in Nashville or other larger cities is its lovely curated shop right next door! I've fallen in love with all the items they have stocked - body care, greeting cards, gourmet condiments, the best magazines (Kinfolk, Darling, Sweet Paul, etc), candles, and even some apparel and hats. Seriously the best ever. I'm secretly so glad I can just make a quick stop over to City & State instead of ordering the popular brands I've seen circulating on Instagram online and waiting for shipping. On to the actually coffee side of things - the baristas are so incredibly nice and friendly. It's seriously like a family! I've tried many items on their menu - cortado, latte, lumberjack latte, iced chai latte, brown sugar cinnamon latte, white peony tea, ginger plum iced tea... all of them are gems. I've never been disappointed with what I've ordered. They keep updating their menu so be sure to come back often and try the new items! OH and Porcellino's started carrying croissant sandwiches. I haven't tried one yet but they look amazing and Porcellino's is awesome! There are plenty of plugs and the table space is perfect. It's a nice place to get some work done during non-rush hour times. Some tips - no cash, credit card only. You pay through their iPad app. The baristas take time in making your drink so if you're in a major rush, it may not be too convenient. All in all, this is THE place to be in Memphis these days, so check it out!

I've been meaning to check it out since it opened. I saw a review about the carbonated iced coffee, and that finally tipped me over the edge. I met a friend there for coffee and chat. I ordered the Hampliner, carbonated iced coffee with pomegranate syrup and a lime. It was so light and refreshing while fully caffeinated. My companion got a latte. She loved the pretty picture made from the foam along with the quality of the coffee. The case was full of delicious looking breakfast treats. The sandwiches on their lunch menu are provided by Porcellino's, so you know they are good. The ambience is somewhat quiet and very conducive to working. Their free wifi has a good signal. I didn't get a chance to check out their well curated gift shop, so I will definitely go back soon.

I like this place. The coffee is good. The seating could be a bit more comfortable, but it's not a bad atmosphere. But for a few reasons, I can't give it more than three stars. One, while I like some of the selections in the gift shop, it's crazy expensive. I wonder if the owners understand the economics of the neighborhood they're in. This is not Germantown. It's fine to have some expensive things, but you need price diversity. The prices at the coffee shop are a little higher than other coffee places, but not unreasonable. The mugs and accessories in the coffee shop are the same, very expensive price range. There's an $8 chocolate bar, and there weren't any that were less than that when I was there. Mugs appear to be $40-$60. I love cute and fun coffee mugs, but that's insane. Another reason I can't give it five stars is the fact that they don't take cash. First I was thinking is that even legal? Isn't legal tender legal tender? Anyway, this seems like another example of tone deafness to the neighborhood they're located in. You have everyone from section 8 housing to medical doctors living here. The diversity is incredible. But that means you are going to have people for whom using plastic is no big deal, and people who are digging coins out of the sofa so they can go get themselves a treat. Someone in an earlier review said something about how this is like an L.A. Coffee shop. I really don't want an L.A. coffee shop. I want a Memphis coffee shop. Broad Ave has a certain character that it seems like developers are trying their hardest to kill. As a long time resident of this area, I don't like that at all. Lastly, they just close way too early. The time that I and most people I know want to go for a coffee is AFTER work. Who has time to sit and sip before? I know they're small and family owned, but really how much more would it cost to stay open another hour or two? Even with a limited menu, it would be worth it. Overall, I recommend the coffee shop. It's good stuff. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere is not bad. The gift shop would be great if you have a lot of money, but do not so that's that. I will return to this coffee shop often. I hope they adjust some of these things soon. I'll still be going there even if they don't.

Memphis now has Craft #Coffee I've been 3 times so far. WiFi issues have been cleared up. Excellent variety of pour-overs. If you are looking to get some work done, they have self serve drip till 10 am on the weekdays. Warm friendly staff. Indoor & outdoor seating. Feels like you are in another city. They also have a great Instagram feed @cityandstate

I found this place about a month ago, and if I lived closer I'd come more often. I love their chemex coffee. It's brewed to help take out some of the bitterness that a lot of coffees have. I was able to drink it without sugar....that's saying something. :) Their pastries are great too.

The coffee is ok, not great. Reasonably priced, but the preparation is too slow for how it tastes. Orders easily get backed up because of their specialty pour on methods, making simple to go espressos take forever. Reasonable number of parking spots to get in and out. It's nice having a coffee shop in between Cafe Eclectic and Republic for easy convenience. Hours are not great for a stop after work on the way home, because they close at 4pm. It would be nice to have late Thursday, Friday, Saturday hours. We'll see if this changes. Gift store is cute, but a little too kitchy for me. I would like to see some high end quality local made items. Not a good selection of jewelry, but lots of soaps n lotions, if that's what you're into.

Definitely enjoyed my time at City and State. Whether to work on projects. Chill with friends. Have a work meeting. It has this organic feel that reminds me of Nashville! Free Wifi and a retail store attached, it is a cute place that is located in the up and coming artsy Broad Avenue district! Must Visit. Yay Coffee!

Nice little coffee and retail spot on broad in Memphis. Reasonable prices and the coffee and latte we had tasted great. Super nice staff and cool vibe! I will be back.

My cappuccino was just OK! Warm not Hot...The owner & barista did not say hello or may I help you! The barista just took my order and went about his business.I will not be coming back to this place.

Though it's not the most practical strategy for a coffee shop, I did find it innovative. City & State has a great layout. It's very open and inviting and encourages group interaction. The staff is very friendly and outgoing, which is a pleasant change from the lack of personality one usually encounters at chain coffee houses. I know that certain types of coffee can take longer to prepare but the few minutes I waited for my latte seemed reasonable for the quality and customer service. The retail side is interesting but not as diverse of a selection as I expected (which I understand since they just opened) and VERY expensive. I hope that they continue to add brands of varying price points and maybe more culinary accessories. I do however appreciate that it's not a Tervis/Vera Bradley outlet and could see the effort they put in to source items you don't find everywhere else. Overall it's a nice place to meet with friends and I hope to see it continue to grow over time.

right when you walk in, you will boldly proclaim the following: "this place is COOL!" it really is. my fiancé and I visited City & State on a Sunday and really enjoyed ourselves. a couple cons: -their pricing is ridiculously high. you would think they have imported everything from overseas as a delicacy or something. we unintentionally found ourselves paying $7.00 + tax for a cold maple pecan croissant. baked goods prices are not marked. -they only offer drip coffee Monday through Friday, which isn't really a problem.. unless you're paying $4.25 for a small Chemex, which is the case here at City & State. pros: -the staff is very friendly and knowledgable. -the space is trendy & creatively inspiring. -they have a cool 'Yay coffee' mural outside.. a big 'hip hip hooray' for all of you coffee lovers! I like this place a lot. I guess I am just not enough of a coffee connoisseur to fully appreciate this place/shell out the cash (I mean credit card.. they don't take cash by the way).

As others have said, City & State has a very hip atmosphere. The gift shop has some great artisanal brands and it is curated very nicely. As others have said, it reminds me of a San Francisco or east Nashville coffee shop. I do kind of wish it was more "Memphis" :( I can appreciate a good cup of coffee, though, and they do have good coffee. We primarily drink pour-over at home, so I know the time it takes to make a good cup, and like I said, I can appreciate it. HOWEVER: there are some things that just irk me about this place. 1. No 1/2 and 1/2? I mean, seriously. I am not asking for a million flavor pumps or a ton of sugar in my coffee. I just want a lil' cream. All they have is 2% milk. If you like a little REAL cream in your coffee, you can't get it here. Blah. 2. They don't do drip coffee after 10am or on the weekends. Which is not a hugeeee deal necessarily, until you find out the ONLY alternative is a $5 pour-over or french press. Say whaaat?? I am all about supporting local establishments. But seriously, that's crazy to me. 3. They don't take cash. I set aside a certain amount of cash each month for my coffee habit (ha i'm really not kidding), so when I have to use my debit card, it really screws things up. I know everyone uses cards, and I'm all about it, but for that to be the only option is just silly.

City and State is fast becoming my go-to for any gift I need to purchase -- lots of simple yet elevated, high-quality items that basically anyone would like. Also, the arrangement of the items just begs for you to stay and browse for a while. Coffee is on-point, also -- my fave is the cold brew. My only gripe is that the price point is a little too high for this spot to be more than an occasional treat for me. Oh, and those pecan croissants from Porcellinos? $7. Consider yourself notified.

This place is delightful - very clean interior design. The coffee is excellent (pricey but definitely high quality). Pastry selection is limited but some decent options. I gave 4 stars because couple of times I went, it was super humid inside... made enjoying my coffee and reading my book a bit of a struggle. But I imagine it would be a superb experience if air conditioning was a little breezier.

Wowza! Was I suddenly transported to LA or Austin? I never expected to see a place like this in Memphis, and I am simply giddy with excitement! Not only is it a coffee shop...it is a gift shop too! With handmade, LOCAL products! I was going gaga over the jewelry, bath products, and bags...there are even clothes! I can't emphasize enough how high quality this stuff is! Once your done browsing, pop into the adorable, attached coffee shop. It can get a little loud (well, they were a group of teenagers, so perhaps it was just a one time thing), but I adore the decor and the drinks are delicious. I also thoroughly enjoyed my turkey croissant...but I do wish they had more food options. I'm just over the moon with how cute and happening Broad Avenue is!

Very cool coffee/gift shop. The gift shop feels very Athropologie and although most of the goods are curated from outside Memphis, they do feature a handful of items from local artist. Price point on most items on the higher end side. Would like to see more locally made items however items are unique and do not appear to be mass produced from china. The coffee shop has a fair amount of seating, feels very much like a classroom with hard seats, clean lines and stark. We sat at the bar seating that looks out at Hollywood feed warehouse. The two gentlemen working, who I believe are the owners were super friendly and very interested in my visit being a pleasant one. The gentleman who took my order did not rush the ordering process or my line of questioning about the items for sale in the store which I VERY much appreciated. Excellent customer service!! Recommendations would be to invest in a mircrowave to be able to heat up the delicious baked goods featured from Porcillino's. Excellent they use a local bakery since they do not do it in house - you can't get any better than Porcellino's goods! I was not able to order my triple expresso americano, I think because their cups are not large enough for such order, not sure if I am unique in wanting a triple Americano so it may be worth investing in larger mugs. I ordered a latte instead which was good, it was my fault I forgot to order extra hot and I am just a weirdo and can't drink just hot items, they have to burn my mouth out. My niece ordered the brown sugar latte on ice which was quite yummy.

Amazing! This place has bags, candles, books, soaps and more. Very sleek and modern decor. This will be the coffee spot in the city. The Bon Bon is espresso with condensed milk--delicious. I think the brown sugar and cinnamon latte is one of the best drinks ever! And the almond croissant supplied by La Baguette is to die for. This is place I do not mind driving to from Cordova and this is definitely a coffee spot that is good enough and unique enough that I would bring out-of-towners. This has made my "must" list in Memphis.
