Taqueria Alameda has a perfect rating going for them in Yelp. That's almost impossible to do as a mexican restaurant in Michigan. Because of Yelp and since I trust Janelle W's reviews, I had to try this perfect rated place myself. Basically, it was not just amazing authentic taste of mexican food that would give this place 5 stars, I would give it more then 5 stars for the impeccable service and the high quality of the food! I walked inside and it was a grocery store with partial dining area. I'm use to this type of set up since I'm from Korea and lived in LA. I sat down and looked over the menu and I wanted to try everything. I ordered carnitas taco and al pastor taco plus chipotle chicken tostada. I asked for avocado on the tacos and they put it on the tostada also! Bonus! I taste the tostada first and I was so happy that I have discovered something so delicious that I started to plan the next visit here after just few bites. The tacos are the classic mexican tacos, (2 corn tortillas, meat, onions, cilantro) and it was awesome. Reminds me of Taco Truck tacos but cleaner taste to it. Basically not as greasy. The avocados were so fresh and had no brown spots what so ever. The waitress was spot on for everyone in the place. Very attentive and worked very hard to please everyone. I noticed checking out what other people ordered that there is the "other style" tacos like the deef fried flour shell, cheese, lettuce, etc. I also saw few menudos (tripe soup) being ordered which makes me thing they are delicious. I also saw guacamole that looked so fresh that even when I was full, I thought about ordering it. I could tell it was freshly made. As for my list of the best, it just moved to the #1 best Mexican Meal in Michigan. I'm in planning stage of when I should go there again and which of my friends would love this place much as I do. For your information: --- It's not a big place. Small groups of less then 4 only. It has probably 5 tables and that's it. --- Also they take credit cards but bring cash for tip! You can not add tip to the charge. The awesome waitress told me not to worry about tipping her since I couldn't add the tip the the charge but luckily I had few singles in my pocket. :) --- i don't think they give you complementary chips and salsa but since everything is cheap there, not a big deal to spend a little for chips and salsa. --- I will haunt down anyone that gives less then 5 stars for this place. --- Janelle W should get free food here for life since she started the Yelp following of this restaurant.

There hasn't been much mention of the gordita, hence my need to review. The gordita is awesome. Go now and order the gordita...SO GOOD. You don't know what a gordita is? Oh well, go try it and you'll love it. That's all I've got.

This is one of those crazy little places that doesn't have to advertise and can count on people talking them up to get the word out. I get over there once in a while when I want an authentic Mexican food experience. Lately my favorite has been the deep fried carne asada quesadilla. Tonight I had one along with the grilled version so I could compare the two. Both are good, but the fried one is a bit better tasting. I had an order of chips and salsa too, eating three containers of the hot salsa. It wasn't very spicy but had a decent smokey taste.

I preemptively wrote a 3-star review on this place after only one visit. After nearly a dozen more I'm ready to rage glory. 'Raging GLory here' Done. But serious, da hella greatness that is going on in there. I was going to wait until I tasted the lamb stew but heck with it. It gets better every time. My brother and I have become addicted to the 'crispy' beef taco. I can barely describe it, it's like a pierogi size corn hard shell pouch stuffed with seasoned meat, and NOTHING else. This 'salad' comes on top of lettuce, tomato, white cheese, yum. See the pictures for a completely destroyed plate of these in the works.

Not fancy but good homemade food and nice service with a tiny Mexican market. Proximity to the airport is good too.

I finally made it over here with my husband. I had promised to save this one for a time when he could come with me so it took a minute as he works teh crazy hours. I really liked the tacos in here. I had some of my standby Al Pastor and of course I had to sample some of the cabeza, which indeed was the best version I have had. If you have not yet delved into this taste sensation I have to urge you to give it a whirl here at least. If you do not like it here then it is not the thing for you anywhere. Such richness. James got the taco combo and I ended up stealing his beans. I did not feel guilty a bit as they are not his thing. He has no clue what he is missing really. He enjoyed his rice at least. I like the atmosphere here, friendly and fun. Definitely like you are in someone's kitchen, you are nearly tempted to ask to pitch in and help. It's that kind of authentic. James likes the grocery items a lot and had fun browsing while we waited and after we were done. We also plotted what we will try on the next trip, a great sign for my husband that he really did like it. This is strictly standard behavior from me though, I am always thinking a meal ahead. We did not have room for dessert but as this is not too far from us I am sure we will get around to it. We will definitely be back.

When I walked in the door I thought there was some kind of mistake. It looks like a cross between someone's kitchen and the tiniest corner party store that you've ever seen. They have about 5 tables and a small aisle of good looking groceries. My wife didn't see any egg dishes on the menu and asked if they made eggs with cactus. They had both a lunch and dinner version. I had carnitas and ground beef tacos. EVERYTHING was great. None of the tacos were dripping in fat; they tasted great; the tortillas were superb. They also brought out some chips directly from the fryer. All the flavors were distinct and clean - tacos came with cliantro and lime, just how I like them. I was asked if I wanted the $1.49 tacos or the $1.99 tacos. The difference was a 4" or 5" tortilla. I got the larger ones and they were worth every penny of it. I was stuffed at 3 tacos. The jamaica was good - also not listed on the menu. Great friendly service.

This place is amazing! Great authentic mexican food. Very reasonable prices. I love the mexican music you hear as soon as you walk in Everything is seasoned to perfection. Cant say a bad thing about this restaurant.

This place is small and cute, and we almost missed it because we weren't expecting it to be in a strip mall. They have 99 cent tacos 11-3 and they were pretty great. We tried the chicken, steak and marinated pork (they also have crispy pork) and all were great (steak was the best). They've got a tiny dining room and tiny grocery section with all sorts of Mexican cookies and beverages etc.. They cater and have a large assortment of platters from like 30 tacos to hundreds of tacos.

I was looking for a decent chili rellenos and tried their version and it was the best I've had since Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have enjoyed everything I've tried over the years and I am constantly impressed over the quality and reasonable prices at Taqueria Alameda. Often imitated, but seldom duplicated. 4 stars and I'll definitely be back...

I guess I'm ruining the perfect 5 star rating for this place, but I don't give out too many 5 stars. I wasn't blown away & I'm not sure that this is as good as it gets...yet. I don't have much to compare it to in regards to authentic Mexican food. Hopefully that'll change soon. I have been wanting to try this place for quite some time after seeing so many positive reviews since I've been on Yelp. I finally had the opportunity today when Rachel C. wanted to meet for lunch. Apparently it's a good sign that we were the only white people in the place. That's what you people yelp anyway. Sadly, most of my experience with Mexican food are the chain restaurants or Americanized food. I am a creature of habit & tend to stick with the same dishes. Part of that is a weak attempt to stick with food that isn't super fattening, but that's a bit ridiculous when eating Mexican food. I probably had some good authentic Mexican food in Texas, but it's been so long & I was probably too young to appreciate it. Staff was very friendly and prompt. I like that the soda is served by the can. I'm not a big fan of fountain soda, and don't have much faith that they get cleaned as much as they should. We both ordered the #1 combo w/ a taco, tamal, and tostada. I asked for cabeza, which is completely new to me. Again, I keep reading about this cabeza and apparently its supposed to be awesome head. It was pretty good! I'm glad I tried it. I'll pass on the Lengua though. The tortilla chips were really good and very warm. The salsa was one of the best salsas I've ever had. I loved the fresh cilantro in it. I was a little disappointed that the taco didn't have cilantro & onions on it. I'm not sure why, but I'm guessing it's because I had a combo. I fixed that by dumping the salsa all over everything. The refried beans & rice were also delicious. I've never had a tamal before, so I really didn't know what to expect. I know it's nothing crazy, but the filling was lacking a bit. Again, the salsa saved it. I basically ate everything except for half of the tamal. I have no doubt I will regret this later & I'm fighting a food coma as I type this review, but it was really good. I enjoyed all of the little groceries they had, especially the Mexican sundries. Very interesting. Even though I don't live close by, and will be moving further away, I work in the area, and will definitely be back. I'm not sure I can get my husband to try it, so I might be hitting it up solo. After studying the menu, there are so many things I'd like to try, especially the smoothies, milk shakes and desserts!

Howdy All: I hope you are well. Well, I had to try this place after the great reviews here. And we were not disappointed. I had the beef, lamb and pork tacos while my companion had the burrito the size of his head, three tamales and some fried plantains. All washed down with an orange soda and a horchata. As others have said it is a cool place with a couple of racks of groceries and five or so tables to eat at. The staff was friendly and courteous and we are already planning our next trip. Best regards, tony

I came to this place because I was washing clothes next door. It was small inside. I think it was originally going to be a grocery store and they decided to sell hot food. You can find 2 aisles filled with Mexican groceries. To the god stuff. I ordered the gorditia with tinga-which is shredded chicken in a special sauce. And 2 crispy tacos-chicken-cause they were on special 99 cents 11:00am-3:00pm. The gorditia was very good! The shell was homemade with small pieces of onion. Mmmmmm! It was filled with chicken, sour cream and lettuce. Taco was also good and filling. This wasn't the norm taco. It was filled with chicken then fried closed. So cheese & lettuce & sour cream was in top. I got so full I couldn't eat one of my tacos. So I saved it for later. I also order an Horchata very tasty. The only thing I wasn't happy about was I asked for hot salsa and it was not hot at all! I like this place and plan to return for carry-out. They only have 4 tables in a small area.

The best tacos and most authentic food just shy of going to Detroit. The chips r fresh made to order, and r the best. It's a quaint family owned and operated place. There is nothing that isn't good. My favorite place to go while washing next door.

I really could have sworn that I had written a review for Taqueria Alameda. Either way, this was one of the FIRST restaurants I visited based on Yelp reviews alone. My then-boyfriend and I ate here early into our relationship 3 years ago. It is very similar to other taco joints in Southwest Detroit- it fulfills double duty in the community by being a restaurant AND a small grocery that carries imported goods. The décor is humble, as is the menu (made of self-adhesive letters diligently applied to a large board), but don't let that deter you! Ambiance is not important when the true marker of quality is the food! The service is pretty good, considering that aside from the cooks, the only person working pulls triple duty as cashier, server and runner. You always get free chips and salsa if you are eating in. My husband typically orders traditional tacos (corn tortillas ONLY), and prefers the cabeza (yes, the meat from the skull of a cow), but he's also been known to order asada or chorizo as well. But he always gets at least one cabeza taco. It's tender and fatty and he loves it. I always order the huarache (in memory of my long-lost favorite restaurant in Detroit that closed all too soon) with al pastor. It's essentially a deep friend flat cake of masa with a thin layer of refried beans inside, that is topped with cilantro, onions, queso fresca and your choice of meat. This is the real deal, with the added convenience of being located in Westland.

I'd give them 5 starts, but I REALLY wanted to try the cabeza (beef head) taco and they didn't have any. Next time. If you're looking for this place for the first time, don't blink. You'll miss it, and that would be a tragedy. I took off on my one one day for lunch as I've been wanting to try this place based on it's reviews. I ordered 3 tacos; one pollo (chicken), one campechano (mixed meats), and one al pastor (marinated pork). I also ordered a sopa de pollo just to try it, and a diet pepsi on the side (ironic I know). The service here was wonderful. Very comfortable and pleasant. The place is snuggled in with a small Mexican grocery store and has a very family-like atmosphere. I was served tortilla chips with fresh salsa (both regular and HOT). The salsas were great! Very fresh and obviously homemade with lots of flavor. They ended up bringing me another large bowl of the regular, as I took to mixing the two. The food arrived in not time with fresh lime, cilantro, & onions. The flavor was out of this world, especially the campechano & al pastor. The chicken was good, but beside the other spices was slightly overpowered. I was in taco heaven! The sopa had just the exact mix of ingredients, and the texture & flavor were perfect. This is a must go place if you like authentic Mexican food. The prices are great and you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere better North of Baja.

After reading great reviews from Yelp, my boyfriend and I decided to get some authentic Mexican fare. We were happy to see the place bustling when we arrived, but it had a strange smell and looked awfully dirty. The waitstaff was very polite, but we were hesitant to eat our food. The chips were strange and overly salted and my rice had a hair in it. I decided to stop eating and say I was full as did my bf. We arrived home and 40 minutes later I was sick to my stomach and my bf started on a 12 hour puke fest. He had chicken tacos and I had had beef. I was ill for only about two hours, and was lucky that I did not get what he had. Needless to say, we will not be going back. Smelled, dirty, food poisoning.

Awesome chicken and beef tacos, the salsa is amazing! They need to can the salsa so you don't have to eat it right away. I can't wait to try a variety of their food. Think I will order all chicken taco-really good!

Granted, we went on a Saturday evening, but the service was poor. I received my food but the waitress left my husband's food sitting in the window for 15 minutes while she cashed out customers and bagged to go orders. By the time he received his food, mine was cold. I ordered the Sopes. They were thin and flavorless. My husband ordered chicken fajitas and they were over seasoned with black pepper. The rice was meh. The salsa was given in small plastic condiment containers and was just okay. Overall, it was way below average. We'll stick our old fave, an out of the way spot in Detroit, in the future.

This place is a hidden gem in the area. Tiny place with a couple tables, and some mexican grocery items. I have to say that this place is 100% Authentic. All of the tacos are amazing, double wrapped corn tortillas, served with onions, cilantro, and a lime wedge. Make sure you get the bigger tortillas it is well worth it. This is one of my regular take out spots and will continue to be.

If you're looking for AUTHENTIC Mexican, this is the spot. Great little Mexican market that also serves food. While in the store you'll feel like you've just transported to somewhere south of the border. I had the large tacos with corn tortillas. Yummy! Marinated pork, chicken and steak were all tasty. It's not much for atmosphere if you're looking for hip or cool and there's no alcohol, so don't expect a margarita. But, you can get a coke imported from Mexico. Very good.

After gushing about having some great. Mexican food last month a friend of mine asked if I had ever been to this place and I had not. Laurie told me that it was excellent and that I should give it a try. I decided today would be that day so I stopped in for a takeout order. It is located in a small space and the entrance is nearly obstructed by one of the strip mall's pillars. After entering you will encounter a couple of tables with chairs where most people sit down at awaiting their takeout order (there is a larger dining area to the left of the order counter). The employees at the counter were friendly and helpful with my ordering. I decided on the two taco meal (beef) which included refried beans and rice. I also ordered a 'Make Your Own' burrito for later with chicken. As I waited for my order there was a steady stream of people coming in to either sit down and order in, pick up an order or place a takeout order... I was more confident that this was going to be delicious. I was not disappointed! The tacos had fresh cilantro on them (I ordered them in the soft tortilla shells) and I words cannot describe how delicious they were! The fresh lime juice squeezed into them really made a difference in taste! I've not had a taco that tasted that good! The burrito? Just as great 5 hours later as I watched TV! This is my new place for Mexican food and now it is closer than Mexican Village. Thanks, Laurie, for the great tip!

I would give this place a 3.5... 4 Stars for the uniqueness of the establishment. It is itty bitty and when we got there, it was a full house. (5 tables full), but a table quickly cleared out and we grabbed it. Nothing fancy shamncy about the place. Separated from the eating area is a small one aisle grocer area, the cash register area and then behind that, the cooking area. Small... Loved the lil telly with the spanish show. We made up our own subtitles. Service 3 stars and it's high because I felt so bad for the one waitress, who was running to and from. She was responsible for anyone walking and all of the tables. We were greeted with a smile and our orders were taken quickly, but once the food came, we had to sit quite a bit to wait for napkins, refill on salsa, and our side dishes. There were lots of walk ins and you are right next to the suds'n wash laundromat...so she had to take care of those customers and then she would take care of her tables. Not a good system. Food 3 Stars Perhaps if we hadn't just been to Lupitas we wouldn't have a prior expectation to what we ordered. Salsa-dlish tomato taste, but NO heat. (red) Green salsa, was tasty and had some heat. I did request a hotter sauce, which was delivered, but it's made with smoky chipolte peppers and I don't like taht smoky flavor. :( Al Pastor tacos were a let down, but we jsut had our first intro to them, last week at Lupitas. They looked so good, but they were dry bits of meat, kind of crispy (not carnitas, I double checked). Cabeza tacos were absolutely DELICIOUS!!! Moist, flavorful and soooo tender...very good. Lengua- BLECH! I've had beef tongue tacos before and these were horrible! No flavor, mushy...I couldn't finish it. Refried beans - meh. pretty runny and a lil on the bland side. Should have tasted some lard...; ) Tostada- hubs thought this was better than both of his tacos. Chorizo taco- it was suppose to be with eggs, but they left off the eggs. I don't know how this is possible, but it was bland and dry...the pastor and chorizo seemed to be fried or grilled too long and there wasn't any flavor. :( I will give this place a second try as there were other things on the menu to try and as I said, the Cabeza was FABU. : )

This is a tough review to write because I trust the tastes of some very experienced Yelpers who reviewed before me, but I have to say with brutal honesty that I thought it was good, but I wasn't blown away. First of all, the atmosphere is awesome. Having dinner in the middle of a Mexican market is super cool, and I'm a big fan of anywhere I can go in sweats, and still look better than the average customer. The chips were awesome and hot, and their salsa was perfect. I ordered a combo plate of a taco, tostada, and enchilada. You can't mix and match the meat on the combo which was disappointing since I generally get sick of the same taste easily. However, I ordered my combo with grilled chicken. Um, again it was ok. But it came with rice and beans and they were cold. Also the chicken was a tad dry, and since it was in EVERY part of my combo plate, I felt a little robbed. I did end up getting some flan that was awesome. So between the chips and salsa, flan, and the cool supermarket environment, it was a pretty good experience. I'm going to keep this place bookmarked so I can try it again with a different flavor. Expect an update eventually.

Our favorite Mexican restaurant. Great food and quickly prepared. Very authentic. I only took off a star because I find hair in my take out pretty regularly so I just kind of expect it now. It's so good I eat it anyway!

I'm from Arizona and I must say comparatively speaking Michigan does not have the best Mexican food! This place however, has authentic Mexican food from Carne Asada tacos with cilantro and onions to real tamales! Better than what I have had in Mexican town too! If you're looking for real Mexican food this is the closest I've cake since moving here!

I use to live somewhere with excellet Mexican restaraunts, so when I'm moved to Western Wayne County, I was told to go to numerous places such as Mexican Fiesta II in Canton. Those places didn't live up to my expectations. Then I tried Taqueria Alameda. It is simply the best Mexicanfood in Western Wayne County. Now to start, it is not the best place to sit and eat. The place is tiny and only has a few seats, so I would recommend getting take out. However, I have loved the food every time I have ordered and I have probably ordered half the menu. I go out of my way just to eat here.

  • Ruben L.

Meh. I blame myself for going in with inflated expectations. Ordered take out from this place. I'm always on the lookout for some good tacos, and this place came highly recommended from a number of different people. AMBIANCE: This place is hidden in a little strip mall (I drove past it twice before I found it). Not a lot of seating (maybe about 5 tables), which is fine as I presume most people get food to go as well. The place also has a very small "grocery section." You're not likely to fulfill your food needs for the week, but you're sure to find that Tapatio hot sauce you were looking for. MENU: Nice selection of meats for your taco/burrito/enchilada/(insert Mexican food name here). From lamb to beef, tongue to head, they got you covered. They also got churros, which I'm still shocked are soo hard to find (seriously, how is this not a standard dessert at Mexican joints?) They also have agua frescas, licuados, and batidos. FOOD: Tried an assortment of the tacos- suadero (the carne asada equivalent), al pastor, a beef/chorizo mix, lamb and chicken. Sadly they ran out of carnitas (at 3pm, seriously?). I have to say, I wasn't all that blown away. I mean sure they were good, but I was starving, so that should've made them that much better, and they were just "ok." The suadero tacos were just meh. My wife liked them better than Dos Hermanos, but I disagreed. The lamb was a little gamey, and the chicken was well chicken. If not for the beef/chorizo and al pastor, I'd likely not go back. Oh, I also tried the horchata. Not nearly as sweet as I would've liked it to be. OVERALL: Not bad, but not great. Perhaps the carnitas are mind blowing, and my curiosity to try them may actually bring me back. Otherwise, I'm going to Dos Hermanos. Celebrity Rating: Maglio Ordonez

Absolutely delicious tacos,, both traditional Mexican and Americanized. For me, the Americanized taco with lettuce, tomato, queso fresco, crema and mouth wateringly good chorizo, hits the spot every time! My Mexican born wife prefers the traditional Mexican taco (big surprise). She loves the Al Pastor in her taco and the broth of the Caldo de Olla is to die for! We return frequently, as these tacos are just that good. Interesting side note, you never, ever find any diet non-caffeinated pop in these taquerias. It's like an unwritten law! Ha ha

I cannot believe i didn't know about this hidden real mexican restaurant till now. I took my husband there for lunch since we were craving mexican food. This is definitely going to be our spot! Ordered marinated pork, ground beef & beef tongue taco. They were all tasty & beef tongue was so tender. Also I had Consome soup(lamb soup) it was so delicious! A waiter was very friendly too. Chips were hot but salsa was just okay...so i give 4 star.

I really liked this place! My girlfriend took me out to eat for some 'authentic Mexican' food and we ended up here. Looked like a hole in the wall being in a run down strip mall but, most great (Mexican) places usually are. I was pleasantly surprised at the prices and mostly the taste and authentic flavors. Awesome!!

Love this place. The staff is very welcoming, the prices are great, and the food, 100% authentic Mexican. Delicious!! Al Pastor is great; perfect mix crispy, chewy, moist ,flavorful. Love the selection of Jarritos sodas and small selection of Mexican groceries.

Been looking to branch out and taste something I haven't tried before and this place is right next to the laundromat I go to. Noticed a number of people coming out so I decided to venture inside. There are 7 tables and there was a couple sitting at one eating chips and salsa. A man had just finished placing his order, then it was me, then an older lady followed behind. Noticed how small it was and was surprised to see a mini grocery store next to the check out counter. The menu board is all printed on white paper with black text on yellow construction paper. Nothing fancy...and I liked that. Had no idea what I was going to order and I let the woman go ahead of me and asked if she were a regular. She stated yes and that she and those at work always get the crispy tacos, that they were addicting and this was the best place ever. Sounds good to me. I didn't see anything that was vegetarian but when I went to the counter, Melissa let me know that I could pretty much get anything without meat on it and had plenty to recommend from the California to any of the tostadas, tacos, or enchiladas as well as the botana which is what I decided. I know it's just nachos but I wanted to start off with something familiar and then work my way up if it's worth it. What I did keep saying was "it smells so freakin' good in here." You know right away that they are making everything fresh and to order. I eat out at plenty of places and I have NEVER wanted to go in the back and lick the grill. Seriously it smelled that good. Anywho, the botana was huge with yummy corn chips, huge slices of green peppers, fresh avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, beans and cheese with my side of sour cream and hot salsa. Thought it was tasty, tasty, tasty. My complaint: disappointed that the beans and cheese were all on the bottom and there was not nearly enough beans. Even after I mixed everything I was still looking for beans. I would consider it a chip salad with beans added. I can remedy this with asking for no lettuce extra beans. Also got one of their baked coconut. Um...yeah, those are dangerously good. I will probably go back and try one of the burritos. To repeat what another reviewer said, I love that it's a real Mexican restaurant, ran by real Mexicans speaking Spanish serving real Mexican food. And Melissa is the nicest, friendliest person ever and oh so cute with her laugh as I kept saying how good it smelled.

Came here today on a little lunch trip with my ol lady. I had found it on yelp awhile ago but was finally somewhat in the area. First off I'm Mexican and grew up eating Mexican-American food. Ive also been to Mexico numerous times. So I know what real Mexican food is. It's not nachos or even your beloved burritos. In fact most Americans wouldn't want to eat it. So if I give a place a good review, believe it! To give you an idea, Taco Bell is NOT Mexican food nor is it anywhere near edible. Taqueria Alameda offers up some legit tacos. They're not Americanized hard shell bullshit. They're soft corn and flour tortillas. I had two chorizo tacos, one corn and one flour. Both were really good and flavorful. Packed with plenty of meat and I topped them off with the hot salsa. Went great with the Horchata, which was huge! I also threw in a corn cabeza taco. Here's where the 3 stars comes in. The first thing I noticed was a big quarter size chunk of fat. Blugh! It looked disgusting almost like a mini brain! It really grossed me out and made me not want to eat it. Now I've had cabeza tacos before at other places and never have I seen that shit. That along with unsalted chips and a flavorless salsa bring it down to 3 stars. It's a high 3 stars but I have to say Taqueria El Rey in Mexicantown is better. Alameda is closer though and I will for sure return.

Sigh.... I feel dirty. Not only have I officially become a Janelle W. groupy, but after her last review, I feel like I just had dirty seconds. Taqueria Alameda does have wonderful cabeza, which is beef head, which really should be identified as beef cheek. It is a wonderfully buttery and tender cut which this Taqueria does very very well. My dining partner who grew up in L.A. boldly stated it was definitively the best he has ever had. Personally, I felt that the meat by itself was a bit under seasoned, but a splash of salsa and a dash of salt will remedy that quickly. In addition to the Cabeza, I had the Al Pastor, and the Carnitas. Both were generous and good, but I did like the flavors a hair better at my regular haunts near Mexican town. I do appreciate that these tacos felt very homey and comfortable, like a Mexican grandma was making these just for you. This is accented by the fact that it takes a bit of time for the food to get to you, which really attests to the fact that they are making these items from scratch and with care. We also saw a bowl of steaming menudo go by that looked amazing. Now, I need to take a shower...

We did the head! :) I dragged my husband there and we ate way too much... but we wanted to try everything. He ordered the head taco but I took a nibble. Not as scary as I was expecting. Reminded me of brisket without the BBQ sauce, or the beef ribs at Gauchos. Everything was delicious - we tried most of the taco meats (chorizo was a personal fav), a sope, a botana and took out tamales, . Very fresh and flavorful. We will definitely return (if for no other reason than to get the chorizo and egg 3 pack of tacos because we love, love).

I definitely have a taco problem. Went back yesterday and had the cabeza taco. It was delicious, nothing offputtind at all. I agree it was lightly spiced, but that's OK to let the beefy-ness through. Plus, they offer both a red and green hot sauce for anyone who wants to spice it up. Also had a pastor taco, nicely spiced and tender. Rounde out lunch with 2 of the 99-cent "crispy tacos", ground beef, which I expected to be Taco Bell-ish. Nope. They're more like over-stuffed taquitos, topped (not filled) with lettuce, cheese and a little sour cream. Not spectacular but solid. With chips and salsa and water to drink, a little over $6. Adding a star.

Finally got a chance to make it to Taqueria Alameda. It really is a little piece of Mexican Town in Westland. Where have you been? I got take out and was amazed that even after the almost 45 minute drive home, everything thing was still phenomenal. The cabeza (beef head) was still tender and juicy and was the hit of the meal. I've had cabeza at other restaurants, but none compare. Large chunks that melted in your mouth. Top it with lime juice, onion, and cilantro and this head transports you to another place. Unexpectedly, my wife grabbed on of my cabeza tacos and now my wife loves head also. I just can't wait eat at the restaurant and get this hot off the grille. Yummy. Chicken was a bit on the dry side, but that was somewhat expected with the wait to eat. The Campechano (mixed meats) was great with it's combination of beef and chorizo, and the Al Pastor (marinated pork with grilled onions) was a total taste treat. Beautiful and funky place with lots of Mexican groceries to browse while you wait a few minutes for your food. I was intrigued by some of the deserts that they offer, but will wait until next time to sample them. I'm ready to go back, and I just can't wait.

OMG... Taco craving can be satisfied without going to Downtown.. =) I ordered so much that I got the VIP card from the lady, in case you dont know, if you ordered more then 10 bucks, you get a punch on a card she gives you. after 10 punch, you get 10 dollar free. and 10 dollars gets you alot of food!! Sure it isn't as cheap as downtown tacos, but beats driving to detroit at night. It is authentic and it is super awsome goodness good. I dont have to explain myself how good the food is, just have to eat it. Don't think.. just eat it. hear me? JUST DO ITTTT. My wife is about to pop a baby and running around detroit to satisfy my cravings isn't very ideal.... maybe I am the one pregnant.. LOL OK, gotta run, typing this makes me hungry. YES, is THAT GOOD. chao

Outstanding!!! Extremely authentic mexican food. I sampled three different tacos and was pleasantly surprised with the quality, freshness and quantity. The hot salsa served on the side was perfection. Great roasted tomato flavor. This is a rare gem and I will definitely be back soon.

I got the tacos al pastor and the carnitas tacos. Both were excellent. Served on soft warm corn tortillas with onions and cilantro and with your choice of hot or mild sauce on the side. You also have a choice of what size taco you want 4", 5", or 6" and are priced accordingly. I got the three 5" tacos and the total was just over $6. Service was fast and friendly. Add all that to the fact that it's about a mile and a half from my house and you can bet I will back really soon.

Very fresh, authentic. It's also a store. Small place; you can like grab a jug of fabric softner off the shelf from your table :) I wouldn't recommend the ground beef though; it was very dry and no spices. I appreciate it not being too greasy, but I guess I like a little grease and some seasoning. Staff was very friendly.

When I walked in for the first time 4 of the 5 tables were filled with Mexicans and the 5th was filled with unbearable suburban hipsters. A pretty good sign for good food being had. As good as Taquerias are in Cali and the Tex-Mex border. Having eaten Tacos in Laredo Tx in the same week as my visit to Alameda I can vouch with back to back comparison that they are authentic and Delicious. Fresh lime and cilantro as advertised. I am almost incapable of eating a Taco without fresh lime spending so much time in TX as I do for work and I don't have to suffer on the West side anymore. Had one each of Cabeza, Al Pastor, and Carnitas tacos. Cabeza didn't wow me as much as others but all three were good, The sopes and gorditas going to other patrons during my visit looked really good. Have to admit I am addicted to the carbonated crack that is Tamarindo Jarrito's. Having that available there is just icing on the cake.

My husband and I were here in late August after searching for a Mexican place that was equal to my favorite in Chicago. I was on the hunt for some tasty soft tacos for dinner. I ordered the enchiladas- nothing special with a glass bottle Coke (really cool). The chips that came to the table prior to our meal were blah. For some reason we gave the place another shot last week for lunch. It was really good. The chips that came to the table with the salsa- yummy! I ordered a variety of tacos and was pleased. Is this my favorite taco place in the area so far- I suppose. I love the Coke and now know that I am seeking the freshest ingredients in my tacos (that is the difference from my fave in Chicago to here). I agree with the others- it was good but I wasn't blown away the second time around...maybe it was a different cook.

Dear Canton, Never mind about needing a decent Mexican place in town. Westland and Taqueria Alameda have you covered. Sincerely, Some fat guy After last night's debacle at El Fuego Fresh Mexiblahblahblah I was really needing a winner on the Mexican food front. Then I remembered Taqueria Alameda. And by jiminy, now that I've moved to Canton it's about 5 minutes away! Eat your heart out Janelle! I used to have to drive from Belleville which was just TOO far. OK, not really, but I'm a diner of convenience. If I was hungry and there was a chute dropping hamburgers out of a third story window right by where I was walking, I would probably eat those hamburgers over the McDonald's across the street. I mean, hey, who doesn't like free chute burgers? Anyway, Alameda is now on my way home from work so I stopped in today to sample the small bits of animals they cook so well there. Alameda is everything Mexiblahblahblah isn't. Authentic, good, cheap, authentic. Did I mention it's authentic? And I don't mean authentic like, "let's put stuff on the walls that looks Mexican!" authentic. I mean, it's a Mexican market/taco joint, run by Mexicans, that Mexicans go to. And you can get actual Mexican food there. Not food made with ingredients that may have once existed near a photograph of a Mexican person. I had two 5" tacos made with Al Pastor and the Barbacoa, which I had never tried before. The Al Pastor was tender and deliciously fatty as usual, but the Barbacoa, which was lamb, was the true star. Chunks of tender lamb cooked over fire and slightly blackened. It was divine. Tacos at Alameda are strictly an a la carte affair, unless you're willing to be restricted in your meat choices, and I'm not. I added some rice and beans and the total came to $7.50. A little more than a third of the cost of last night's "meal" and infinitely more comforting. No chips and salsa, but I didn't need them. If I did, I know they would have been good. That's the way they roll at Taqueria Alameda.

Meh. I 've Experiecned Better. The location was fine, quaint, small has a good feel to it of authenticity. The service was prompt and pleasent. The food The chips and salsa before hand was ok but I should have been woried when the salsa was bland. A carnitas taco and a chorizo taco were bland. How can chorizo be bland!?! I don't know but it was, I liked the corn shells but there was very little flavor to the food.

Hole in the wall. Don't expect stellar service but they are really nice. The beans and rice are really really good. Rice was really soft. Perfect. Great fajitas and burritos. Chips were hot and fresh. Meat was really flavorful and tender. You feel like you're right in Mexico. There is even laundry detergent for sale.

I have to agree with the other reviews, these are the best tacos you can get. They have a pretty extensive and authentic Mexican menu, with burritos, taquitos, sopes, etc., but I see myself getting the tacos more often than not. My wife and I ordered 3 each of the Steak and Carnitas tacos and they were great. They are served simply with the meat, onions and cilantro and a side of lime - exactly like you'll get in most places I've been in Mexico. We also ordered a side of freshly fried chips and pico and that was it, we were in love with this place. Don't expect a large American style mexican restaurant, Alameda is tiny. It's basically 5 tables, a cash register and an isle or 2 of mexican style groceries - no bathroom. It is what it is, great, authentic Mexican food in the west suburbs of Detroit.

My new favorite lunch spot. Thanks for the heads up everybody. This place is something else. I had high expectations for this place because of all of the positive reviews. It definently met my expectations. I was craving a good burrito for lunch and was pleased to find them on the menu. Me and the waitress got a little lost in translation. I am a tough sell on a chicken burrito. So I asked if the beef was braised and shredded or grilled steak. I received a hesitant stare and then she replied shredded. Perfect, I thought. So I ordered the California burrito with beef. I was suprised to taste ground beef when I vulnerably dove in for my first bite. I should have noticed all of the ground beef items on the menu. I blame this on my own negligence. However, it was awesome. The first thing you notice is that it is the size of a burrito itself. Its almost the size of a football! The homemade tortilla is awesome. A necessity for any awesome burrito. The beef has a savory seasoning. Nothing like traditional Ortega or other tex mex. There is a distinct sweet and salitness that works so well. The beef flavor is not lost, but is complemented by sweet garlic and onion profiles. The mexican melting cheese is melted perfectly into the beef, creating a perfect saucy-like texture for the beef.. I think this is where the addicting salt flavor comes from. The rice and beans are delicious sides, if you can fit them in your stomach. I brought half of my meal home and I can't wait to finish it. 2 types of salsa came with my burrito. One was traditional tomato, onion, and basil. It is nice and refreshing. The other salsa was something special. The strong flavors that come out are smoked green chiles, toasted cumin, and chipotle. I am a sucker for chipotles in adobo sauce. If you are on the same page as me, you will love this salsa. If you have never had it, you better get out and get some.

Don't belive the hype; this place is awful. I had eaten here once before (cantina tacos) and enjoyed it so a friend and I paid another visit. When we sat down our waitress brought us out chips and salsa. Her thumb was in the salsa as she carried it!!! How could she not notice?! Gross! We didn't mention it nor did we touch the salsa. On to the tacos. Two al pastor, one barbacoa, all 5" corn with the works and my friend and I both ordered the same. We were able to power down the first of the al pastor tacos but something tasted different this time around. Oh well. Now for the barbacoa taco. I opened up the taco to find a fatty blubbery mess of so-called meat. I grabbed a piece to taste and it had no flavor to speak of (maybe that's why they load it with cilantro and onion?). The first bite needed a lot of hot sauce to even stomach it. So my friend takes a chomp from his barabacoa taco only to bite into a bone the size of my thumbnail. Luckily he didnt chip a tooth. I was so disgusted I couldn't finish half of my barbacoa or even touch the remaining al pastor. We got up, paid our bill, and bid adios to this horrible place. I'm so disgusted I will never return.

LOVE THIS PLACE. A bit of a schlep but well worth it. Tacos are as close as I've gotten to my old haunts Taco Mix on 116th in NYC and some of the food carts I go to on my trips to L.A. My fave fillings are the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, Carnitas and Campecho. Love the funky atmosphere - Mexican bodega / taqueria - very real.

Went in here yesterday with a friend and was very glad I did...good fresh food, friendly service, great prices, pretty generous portions considering the price. Don't go here if you are expecting a margarita or 5-star restaurant service; they don't serve booze and it's basically a carry-out type place, SMALL with a few tables to sit in there and eat. I had the combo with a taco, tamale, and tostada. I managed to continue to cram most of it down even though I was full after about half the plate. LOL, it happens. I am picky about tamales and theirs were very good, I also really loved their regular salsa. Mild and tomato-y (is that even good grammar? Who cares), fresh and simple without being watery or overpowering, just as a salsa should be! The place also has some food items for sale which I would assume, since the packaging was in Spanish, that these are classic Mexican market treats. I have only been to Juarez, Mexico - once for work, and we blew in as fast as we came...so no time to pay attention to treat-stuffs. Anyway, great job & hope they keep up the good work. IDK why I had never been here before as I did live in Westland for a few months at one time....maybe it's a newer place. I will definitely return for carry out some time!

So I'm writing my first positive Yelp review, and it's definitely a five star! Patrick brought me here after our dinner plans fell through, and though my eyebrows went vulcan when we walked through the door, I'm glad he did! So I'm a little ashamed to say I've never had fresh tortilla chips before. Some places might say they're fresh, but they don't compare to the just-fried-still-hot-salty-goodness of the chips at Taqueria Alameda. I tried three types of tacos- all were good, but the chorizo was amazing! The people working there (I'm assuming it's family run) were so welcoming that if my stomach weren't about to burst, I could have hung out there all night. Brush up on your head-in-the-mouth jokes and bring some friends. They'll thank you for it!

I'm torn. I don't want to write another 5 start review on a page full of 5 star reviews and lose another great secret/hidden restaurant. After all, we were going to go to Neehee's for dinner tonight, but there was a line out the door. As much as I would like to keep Taqueria Alameda to myself, that would be a violation of all that an unrepentant glutton like myself finds holy. So I'll tell you about Alameda and hope that there isn't a line out the door next time I'm craving some beef head taco's. Yup, they've got some killer cabeza taco's. That's head if you're curious. Janelle sums it up pretty well in her review so I won't dwell on it, but its pretty darn good. Even better are the chorizo taco's. I think I will have to get more then one next time. They're savory and rich and full of flavor. The steak was really good too, but it didn't stand out as much as the cabeza and the chorizo. Plus, they have Tamarind Jarrito's, and that's the best and hardest flavor to find! Taquiria Alameda is so worth the visit. If you're in the western suburbs it will cut your miles:taco ratio in half by saving you the trip to detroit.

Came here today on a little lunch trip with my ol lady. I had found it on yelp awhile ago but was finally somewhat in the area. First off I'm Mexican and grew up eating Mexican-American food.

Awesome!!

Very good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
