Tasty, friendly, and super-fast, Los Amigos is a great place for Tex-Mex in Kalamazoo. Lunch yesterday was my fourth visit to Los Amigos. The first thing you notice when you get situated in the dining room is the furniture: every table, booth, and chair is custom printed with the Los Amigos logo. It's a bit curious, but it's helpful if you're likely to snap a picture of your dinner companion and forget where the photo was taken. My dining companion A. and I were seated immediately, and we were quickly given a big basket of hot tortilla chips and two small bowls for the mini-carafe of salsa. Feeling hungry, I ordered a dinner entree of "fajitas de puerco" ($11.99, remember: this is Tex-Mex, not authentic Mexican, so pork fajitas isn't a contradiction in terms), and A. ordered a "Speedy Gonzales" (a taco and enchilada combination platter). Our very helpful server hadn't heard anyone order the fajitas de puerco before, so I was concerned. She assured me that everything on the menu was good, and that there were no wrong choices. I remained skeptical for the time being. Our food was at our table with startling speed -- certainly within five minutes, maybe under four. I'll have to time them next time, because it really was remarkable. My sizzling fajitas pan was piled high with a very generous pile of carnitas-style pork, mixed with grilled onion, pepper, and tomato, and came with an accompanying plate of beans, rice, and other fixings. A. shared a wish that the Speedy Gonzales platter came with beans in addition to rice. My skepticism about my order subsided when I tucked into my my meal. The pork was hot, juicy, fall-apart tender, and flavorful. There was so much food that I dumped a quarter of it on my friend's plate, and when finished eating I still had enough to take home for a full dinner (which means something because I'm a big fat guy, so I'm super good at eating). I had no complaints about my food whatsoever. A. remarked that the taco was good and the enchilada was merely average. All in all, we had a tasty meal with impressive service at a good value.

A group of 6 of us went for a pre-holiday dinner and had horrible service. The waiter did not speak English very well and had a hard time understanding that I wanted a gin and tonic. He came back and said "nada" when their drink menu clearly showed many drinks made with gin. Our food arrived and was luke warm and not very good. Everything was so doused in red sauce that the tortillas were very soggy. We also had a coupon for "buy one entree get 1/2 off another entree" and he could not get the discount right. After numerous tries we finally gave up and paid more than half off. We also had to finally get up and get our own box after numerous requests for one. I won't be going back. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because the drinks were large and it was a very busy night.

Love this new location that they've come to; I love both locations, but I like the set-up better here than the restaurant in Portage. I've been here for both lunch and dinner rushes, and wasn't disappointed at all. Service was great and timely, and the food was generously portioned and delicious. If you go, you MUST get the cheese dip to go with the complimentary tortilla chips they put out. Mmm! So good!

Was not impressed with the Westnedge location, so had somewhat trepid hope that this location would be better. WRONG, it was worse! Place was dirty, as in the wall next to our booth was splattered with salsa and what looked like hand prints dipped in salsa. I doubt this happened earlier in the day and they just hadn't had time to clean up on a busy weekend. . . Our waiter was very put out that he had to take our order and then DROPPED the plates on the table when our food came. Food was lukewarm and underwhelming. When we stepped up to the cashier stand, the girl asked how everything was and I said " not good " and gave her a glare. She smiled and said "I'm sorry to hear that" as she swiped my card. To be fair, the man sitting across the way told his waitress his meal was delicious. I decided he must eat alot of bad food on the regular. We lived in Phoenix for years and our standards are pretty high. Having a very difficult time finding good Mexican food in this area. Will absolutely positively not be back. Save your money!

Friendly and colorful atmosphere. The wait staff is also super nice and the food arrives really quickly. The only downfall to it coming so quickly (thats what she said) is that a lot of is probably prepared way ahead of time. Still tastes great though and the chips and salsa there are the best I have had around kzoo. Pretty good drink specials throughout the week too. Went on my birthday once and got a huge complimentary fried icecream dessert. So good.

Great lunch spot. I like to eat certain things so they let me mix and match. The Fajitas are aewsome. The service is always quick and good.

Not the worst "Mexican" (yes, I mean the quotation marks) I've had but far from the best. If you want real authentic Mexican, try Mi Pueblo on Gull Road, Nina's in Augusta or Battle Creek, or Juanita's in a slightly scary neighborhood on South Burdick. If you want "mall Mexican" try Don Pablo's in BC or Qdoba. I haven't been to the one on Stadium, but after my meal at the Westnedge location, I won't bother. It all tasted precooked/frozen/reheated -- the kind of food that sends Gordon Ramsay into apoplexy on "Kitchen Nightmares."

Margarita was watered down. Ordered a chicken entree and it was overcooked. Their "special sauce" is their cheese dip. The rice was bland, overcooked, and mushy. I was hoping dessert wouldn't be a disappointment bc you can't go wrong with Mexican dessert. Got the fried ice cream. Not really fried. It's just a scoop of ice cream rolled in corn flakes and then placed in a tortilla shell covered with whipped cream and sprinkles. Sad to say... it was disgusting. The corn flakes were stale and ruined the whole taste bc you couldn't get around it bc it was rolled all around the ice cream. I would never go back again.

The instant gratification of chips and salsa was welcome, but things went downhill after that. My carne asada was a milimeters-thin and dry piece of meat. The guacamole was actually pretty good, and the standard sides and tortillas were all perfectly average as I hoped they would be, and actually ended up saving my dish since they gave the meat some lubrication. My fiancée wasn't as lucky, getting some manner of chicken and shrimp dish. The chicken was way too salty, and the shrimp had a really off-taste, somewhere between dirty seawater and socks. Perhaps the most annoying bit is that the waiter didn't acknowledge my fiancée at all except to ask if she needed a box before we left. Everything else was directed 100% at me. Neither of us are ones to complain, or even really think about it, when a server automatically hands the check to the man at the table, but this experience was cartoonish in its gender dynamics. The best traditional Mexican food in town is still, hands down, the little taqueria in the back of La Mexicana Market. Having moved here from Texas, that little joint has scratched every homesick itch I've had. We're used to Tex-Mex being pretty average, though--even in Texas--and even knowing we were probably going for average, our experience at Los Amigos was still a letdown.

We liked the old venue on Romence rd. but the new place has some nice touches. The service is always good, and the chips and salsa are on the table pronto. The Fahitas are always hot and sizzling - the tamales are also a favorite. There are many choices for Mexican in Kazoo, and you won't be disappointed here. WD

I'll start with the pros: Clean and affordable. That's about it. I was utterly unimpressed by both the food and service Los Amigos. I had lunch with a couple of friends and despite the fact that we were clear one would be late, our wait staff continually and with obviously increasing irritation asked if we wanted to order. The attitude definitely did NOT improve when our party finally arrived. When taking our orders said waiter was impatient with our questions and I swear almost bit my head off when I had the nerve to ask if they made any other than lemon margaritas. The food: substandard. I ordered the Speedy Gonzalez lunch with both rice and beans. Maybe I should have asked for the Take Your Time Gonzalez? If you DON'T want authentic beef tacos (translation: soft corn shell, shredded beef, fresh nonprocessed pre-shredded store bought cheese) come on over to Los Amigos! The chicken enchilada was decent but sadly distracted by the overcooked rice and watery beans. I'm willing to try this place again but . . . meh.

If you want fresh, authentic, and tasty, eat elsewhere (Mi ) . If you want fast at a decent price, this will do. Vegetarian options are severely limited, perhaps due to a lack of the vegetables. I would happily come back for the margaritas and chips, but not for a meal.

I LOVE this place!! We stumbled upon this while looking for a somewhere mexican to have dinner with some relatives at. They far exceeded my expectations. The service is a little slow at the front but as soon as you are seated they have drinks, chips and salsa at your table in under 4 min. The menu items are all reasonably priced (every thing I looked at was around $10), and the food is AMAZING. I loved it so much I am went back less than a week later with some friends and we think we might make dinner here a weekly event!

Worst service. Could be due to the language barrier. Ordered food, received the wrong food. Waiter argued and yelled that I was wrong. Waiter and "manager"/hostess made a scene, disrespected my guest and I. There are better (La Pinata) restaurants in Kalamazoo for traditional Mexican food. I left without paying (or eating)

Great atmosphere and food, nice sized portions and well priced. The staff is very friendly, the food almost always comes fast and you receive free, warm chips and salsa to snack on.

Best restaurant in town! By far my favorite amazing food, staff and prices. I would recommend this to all, try the steak fajitas!

From reading the other reviews, Los Amigos seems like it can be hit or miss. I found it to be good Americana Mexican. I was brought here by friends who said it was their go-to for Mexican in Kalamazoo. The tortilla chips and salsa they brought to the table were standard. The salsa was okay, there was not much or a kick to it though. We shared a cheese and chorizo sausage dip appetizer. While oily from the sausage, it was really good. We all ordered combination plates and had a variety of tacos, enchiladas and tostadas. The rice that came with was better than standard, though the beans were the average accompanied side to the main items type. The portion was huge. Ever thing we had had flavor, nothing was dried out. We had great service. There was a mix up with the order and the waiter had it corrected quickly.

I may not be the pickiest eater but my wife and I love this place! For me, it is more than just the taste but the service and experience. I think this place has some of the best servers ever. They are always so quick, polite, and energetic (for people's birthdays at least). It is always a big plus when they give you free chips and salsa which their salsa is delicious especially when i add some hot sauce to it. I have only had a few of the items on the menu but i have not been disappointed with any of them. They are huge portions and such a reasonable price. My wife and i can eat there for $20 easily (no drinks included) and we always take some of it home with us. I was surprised when i saw some of the negative reviews this place had on here so that is why i ended up writing a review because i really do like this place. As i said in the beginning, i am pretty easy to please taste wise and not picky so i cant tell you if this is pure, real mexicana food but for my wife and i - its great!

  • Laura H.

Wow- What happened to this place? Our fajitas were an oily mess of overcooked vegetables and we waited at least 40 minutes after we ordered. We've been before and enjoyed the food- I guess the reviews that said, "hit or miss" were right. I doubt we'll go back. Sad.

Food was very white-washed/americanized. The taco salad was literally just lettuce, tomatoes, and ground beef, on a tortilla shell, nothing fancy. The chips and tortillas tasted weird to me, like soap almost. Not good.

First review for me....this place rivals Mexican food restaurants in Arizona! The service was awesome! Ordered drinks and they were delivered like in two minutes! The chicken and steak in the burrito and enchiladas was some of the best I have ever tasted. I've lived in Arizona since 1981 and have eaten lots of Mexican food, and this ranks as some of the best! Very friendly and competent wait staff!!! Looking forward to a return visit!

Short and to the point. The food is not good. We tried it (3) times. The first time it was decent and the two additional visits were so sub par we will never be back. Even in a city without decent Mexican Food, I will continue with cravings because Kalamazoo Mexican Food cannot make it in the parking lot much less the ballpark with Enchiladas, Rice & Beans.

I had a terrible meal at Los Amigos. Started with chips and salsa being brought to the table. That was the high point of the food. We had the beef and cheese appetizer. It was basically pieces of beef in watery cheese sauce. Now the main course. I ordered a steak quesadilla. It was laying in a puddle of grease. I couldn't pick it up. Now for the service. The service was the high point of the meal. The server was from El Jima Dor, the better Mexican restaurant that's now closed. She was very nice and attentive. She is what got my 2 stars. Overall, I would not go back. I don't know how this place is still in business.

I'm a fan of the Stadium Drive Los Amigos and have been here a number of times. This is a place that I like to bring family when they are in town visiting, too, because it reminds me of some restaurants from home. Not the most authentic Mexican food around, but a good Americanized version. This place is clean, affordable, fast, and tasty. The service can be hit or miss, but has been mostly positive for me. They bring chips and salsa to your table very quickly. As a creature of habit, I tend to get the same thing when I come here: 3 cheese enchiladas and a side of refried beans. Good every time. Also, since I'm not a big fan of salsa, I typically get an order of cheese dipping sauce to eat with the chips... so gooooooood. I've also gotten drinks a few times. The strawberry margarita packed a punch - a yummy punch, haha. And every now and then, I like to indulge in a flan for dessert. Mmmmm...

Terrible terrible terrible. Starts with the usual chips and salsa. This was the high point of the meal. The salsa was tasty but not the least bit hot, I mean, no flavor heat at all. Ordered bean dip to go with the chips. What arrived was the most disgusting bean dip I have ever seen in my life. The bean dip itself was covered with a thin watery white "cheese" sauce of some kind that was just gross. And the bean dip buried under it was thin and watery. Ordered an a la carte green beef burro. What I got was like an orderve. Took about 5 minutes to finish it off. Wouldn't have taken that long if it was good but the icky dark red sauce the put on it slowed down the gustatory process. My Dining companion had a Chimichanga. Chimi's are supposed to be deep fried. The closest this one got to a fryer was the fact that it was a chicken chimi. The tortilla was soft and the chicken was pretty tasteless. The red sauce on top was just "off" and the wrong sauce anyway for serving a chimi. The refried beans that accompanied it were awful - not so much refried but as if a can of commercial refried beans had been tossed in a blender, some water added, and then the blender run for 5 minutes. The rice was uninspired and tasteless. In short, how does this place stay in business?

Great service and good atmosphere, but coming from California I have a high standard for Mexican food, and Los Amigos didn't blow me away. Having said that, if you're in Kalamazoo and crave Mexican food, you'll be pleased with what you get here.

Good food, quickly. You get more than enough food for the price. Free chips and salsa when you sit down. The drink menu has different varieties of margaritas, tequila, and other drinks. The waiter, as well as others, are always checking in the table to make sure you have everything you need.

Poor service. Our server took verbal orders, messed up the orders, disregarding our request that we all were vegetarians. He also had an attitude that was passive aggressive. Finally we just ate without enjoying our food. Would not visit this joint again.

Solid restaurant-style Mexican food. The margarita was pricey but good. Other reviews have complained about service, but I can say that it was OUTSTANDING! Chips and salsa right away, asked us if we were ready before we were (I was taking a while...), and he checked up on us a few times. The food came out fast and the order was perfect. It seems like many of these reviewers went to another restaurant!

Now I'm going to be a little bias. I grew up in a traditional Hispanic home where we cooked our own food from scratch every day. But this place isn't too bad. It defiantly has a lot of American accents. I got the burrito grande with a side of beans and rice. Beans were creamy and thick just the way I like them. The rice was a bit bland for my taste. And that burrito whew, HUGE. I was a little disappointed with the red sauce they put on top of the burrito. It didn't have much of a kick to it. The pre chips and salsa they complementary offer where fresh, hot and crispy, made just for us. All in all I would go back just to try something a little different maybe, who knows.

Less than one star order mango margarita on the rocks, and got a frozen one with a fly in it!! I added a pic to profile page. Absolutly nasty will never go again.

This is me and my bf go to place when we are just looking for fast service good drinks and good food. Is it authentic? Not really but that's okay with me. I like authentic of course, but my bf loves this place. The one thing I get there all the time is the Margarita Los Amigos. It is my absolute favorite drink. If anyone doesn't know, it's a margarita with a Corona beer bottle filling up your margarita (if that makes sense). It's a 8.50 drink but I think it's totally worth it for how strong they make the margaritas and also adding a full beer. My bf loves getting the tamal. I love them myself too but that is just his ultimate favorite. Fun atmosphere and it's usually busy but I never really have to wait for a table.

Los Amigos is a wonderful family restaurant. The building itself is well decorated, clean, and comfortable. However, it is only when one steps behind the veneer of the restaurant that the magic truly happens. And yes, the magic is the food and drink. This establishment has delicious entrees, chips and salsa that come with every meal, and a variety of drinks. The staff, too, is wonderful. All of the times I've been here, whether picking up my food or dining in, I have had a wonderful experience. Kind, courteous, and charming, I believe Los Amigos has some of the best servers in Kalamazoo. If you want to know what to get, I would highly suggest the chicken chimichanga dinner. It is prepared well and the rice it to die for. On top of it all, it only costs ten dollars! If you want good, affordable Mexican food in Kalamazoo, head on over to Los Amigos. You will not be disappointed.

Ate here several months ago, wasn't great but didn't write a review - thought I'd give them a second chance. Well, the second chance was only marginally better. My first indication that it wasn't going to be great was no wait on a Saturday night - place was less than half full at 7:30 pm. Service was mediocre to poor. Waitress was okay, but you have to pay at the register and we had to wait a LONG time for someone to take our money. The person at the register ahead of us said he'd been standing there for quite awhile and had yet to be acknowledged. The best part of the meal, the free chips.

Big portions? Yes! Friendly service? Yes! Fast service? Yes! Good atmosphere? Yes! Tasty food? Yes! Clean? Yes! "Authentic" Mexican food? Probably not. I usually get the Enchiladas Rancheras, cheese enchiladas topped with very tender pork done with peppers and onions. I always request green sauce rather than red, and they are always accommodating, unlike some other Mexican places in the area who refuse to substitute sauces. In fact, our party requested a number of extras/changes, and it was cheerfully done. Food is hot, and one $11 entree feeds me for 3 meals. Very good deal.

This Los Amigos recently opened at this location. The place has a great decor! It is clean and new as it gets. The food is served FAST. We we here for lunch and were seated immediately. The salsa and chips were right there. The drinks were sold in FROSTY beer mugs and COLD beer. Our order was taken and served in a matter of minutes. The cold stuff was cold and the stuff that was hot was HOT. It was all fresh and good. It was as good as you can get in this area. THe wait staff was always there when you needed them. As others were filing in for lunch they also received the same speedy service. THis is the best fastest service you can get. If you have a lunch hour this is the place to go.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
