Mehhh. It's an option when you're starving and don't want to wait for food to be cooked (unless you decide to go the "hibachi" route).

The food was average. The hostess/cashier was extremely rude and impatient. We went at dinnertime, and it was starting to get busy. (6-7 pm) There were several trays of food that were empty for 15+ minutes, including egg rolls and chicken. I understand it was starting to get busy, but be prepared for a dinner rush and have food prepped! Hostess needs to learn good manners when dealing with paying customers.

This place was pretty good and huge. I think there were more hot stations than other buffets I've been to. The food was pretty good and really have no complaints. I was impressed with the 3 to 4 types of soups I could choose from. The sushi was pretty good. Pretty much the same type you'd see at other buffets where they are small rolls. But for the price, you can't beat it. Place is nice and clean and the waitresses are always there to clean up after you're done with your plate.

I started going to Hibachi Sushi for the Sushi and discovered the other 300 items they have to offer on the Buffet. I think it is the best value money can get for great food. The Sushi is excellent and I enjoy the buffet and variety of items. I have been there for lunch 6 times since March 2011 and today for dinner with my wife and two toddlers. We all found plenty to eat. Sukura 2 has better Sushi but Hibachi has better value for the money and will fix your craving just fine. I continue to sample new items that I hadn't previously had on their buffet and have been pleasantly surprised how good and better it gets every time i go there. Can't wait to enjoy lunch there again and with the coupons it's a steal!

I don't care what anyone says. I love this place. It is exactly what you would expect from a Chinese Buffet, but, somehow, so much more. Compared to other buffets, this place seems a little cleaner and the food seems to taste better. Although this is a buffet it seems a little...classier? I especially enjoy the Chili Chicken. The sushi is much better than I have tried at other Chinese buffets. Of course, you can find all of your favorite dishes between the three buffets of entrees, salad buffet, and dessert buffet. Don't like Chinese food? Try some pizza! This place has everything! Scoop your own ice cream at the end! Or start with ice cream! Now I just want to go back!

3.5 stars. For cheap buffets this is the place to go. The establishment is large so wait time is minimal. There is minimal change in food so you know what you are going to get. The sushi is good, not great but good. I like cream cheese. Lol. The hibachi portion is not the bad either. If it is busy the wait for hibachi is a little long. So I would hit that before the main buffet if there is no line. PS there is nothing Japanese about this place besides the Americanized sushi. Pretty much a Chinese buffet.

Waiter tried to rush us out before we were done, despite being told not done. They were not busy by any means.

The Hibachi Sushi Buffet is a gem among Chinese buffet restaurants . The signage from the street is very misleading... it is one thing they should think about upgrading, ha ha. When you walk into Hibachi, you will instantly be amazed by the space. It is incredibly aesthetic and clean. The bridge over the koi pond you cross to enter the dining area sets the tone for the excellent ambience. The dining area is very large and could easily accommodate large groups. The food is hot and is constantly tended to by the Hibachi staff. It is your typical Chinese buffet-style cuisine so nothing too special on that end, but it is well prepared and tasty. The sushi section offers several different types of rolls. They were all very good and it was my favorite part of the meal. The value is incredible, too. The lunch buffet (after tax) comes out to $6.99. Overall, if you are in the Kalamazoo/Portage area, you need to give Hibachi a try.

What I would really like to do is give this place 3.5 stars. It doesn't feel like a 4-star place because at its heart it is still just a chinese buffet, but I gave the nearby King Wok 3 stars and Hibachi Sushi Buffet (what a stupid name) is better than King Wok in almost every area. Decor - This is where HSB really shines. Considering that it is a low-priced buffet joint, it is very attractively decorated. HSB - 5 stars. King Wok - 2 stars. Food Quality - Very typical for this type of establishment. Everything is decent. Sushi is edible but don't come here for that. HSB & King Wok - 3 stars each. Food Selection - More choices than I usually see, probably 25% more than King Wok. The vegetarian options for each are nearly identical, though (fried rice, noodles, string beans, mushrooms, potatoes, random American dishes like cheese pizza and french fries). The salad/fruit selection is superior, and they have 4 flavors of real ice cream in an attractive buffet table, compared to King Wok's soft serve. HSB - 4 stars. King Wok - 3 stars. Price: HSB was $6.95 for a lunch buffet. Pretty sure that King Wok is the same price. It's a good value. HSB & King Wok - 4 stars. When I leave King Wok I feel like I have just been pushed through a feeding trough and generally feel gross. Not so at HSB.

Nice, inexpensive buffet. Nice ambiance with okay Asian food. Wide selection with varied choices. Tendency to overeat at buffets but high sodium content helps me fight that temptation. Good for quick meal in relaxing environment.

A very misleading name. There is hardly any sushi and the little sushi they have is mostly cream cheese and imitation crab. I also didn't see a Hibachi grill anywhere! The only good thing about the restaurant is the low cost. Wouldn't come here again.

Superb value and extensive buffet of good chinese food and some sushi. The quality has been consistently good. I never had a nasty surprise. I just don't know how they do it for such a low price. I highly recommend it.

You must be joking, right?! This place is worse than the old stir-max, and it's not Japanese. Nothing is fresh nor eatable; it's worse than 1 star rating. The best Chinese (with some Japanese) Buffet is the Old China Buffet @ Battle Creek, off Capital SW and I-94. I am also new in town, and the best Asian Restaurant in Kalamazoo is Spice and Rice on the WMU campus close to the Fedex.

I really only go there for the noodles and "actual chinese" food green beans, butter prawn, scallops, steamed mussels, mantou, shu-mai (when it just comes out), chinese (not fortune) cookies etc etc. The Sushi is ok. The Hibachi is fine too. The Good: There is a HUGE array of food with 4 serving areas for the buffet. We really enjoy the ones we normally eat (see above). The decor is an improvement. The Bad: I usually eat way too much, but that's my problem. The baby/child seat is WAY TOO SHORT. They need higher ones, food constantly falls to the floor wasted because of this.

The words "hibachi" and "sushi" imply Japanese food. This is a CHINESE buffet that happens to have a small sushi area. The food is mostly Chinese, the servers speak Chinese, and even the decor is very Chinese. There is no teppanyaki as you might expect (because for some reason "hibachi" in this area typically refers to teppanyaki) but rather a small grill area off to the side. It's a severely misleading name--they should really consider changing it. For the price, this is a good deal. The lunch buffet is $6.95/person, and the food is perfectly adequate. Nothing to write home about, but hey, you get what you pay for. You can add jasmine tea for $0.99. Instead of soft serve ice cream that you see at a lot of these places, they have ice cream tubs with different flavors to choose from. The ambiance is much nicer than you'd expect for a place like this, but the booths are pretty worn. Some tips: - The sushi looks kind of shady and there seems to be more cream cheese and imitation crab than fresh fish. This is NOT the place to go for sushi despite its name. - The dim sum section has what looks like steamed pork buns. They are unfortunately not steamed pork buns. They're just the breaded bun part with no filling. - The tables have a supporting leg right at the front which really hurts if you bang your knee against it.

Slightly better-than-average for a Chinese buffet. The sushi was fresh and okay, but would have liked more sashimi options. The buffet is fairly extensive; one neat feature was a dumpling section, don't see a lot of those usually. A mix of average or better items. You'll probably find something you like somewhere here.

My absolute most favorite Chinese buffet I've been to yet. A huge selection (note: not a lof of "American" food), beautiful entrance that has a bridge going over a koi pond, great lighting, and in general great decor. Food was fresh, hot, and extremely delicious! My boyfriend tells me the sushi was of good quality as well. My only complaint was the waitress asked me if I wanted more ice water when I in fact had Sprite. Common mistake, though! Well worth the price too! We will be returning.

I liked it when it was Stir-Max. Since the remodel it has gotten alot better. Decor wise. The food is good. But just average good as far as asian buffets go. Nothing special or exciting. Just good basic asian food. They did add a "hibachi" and sushi section that people say is good also. I dont eat either so I cant really review them. There is also more of a variety of selections than when it was Stir Max. Did I mention the decor is a lot better? They actually have a "living" pond/fountain in the entrance with Koi and turtles! Oh and a HUGE faux crystal chandelier over the buffet area. Overall an upgrade from Stir Max.

Here are the better choices for your Oriental cravings - The best Chinese (with some Japanese) Buffet - Old China Buffet in Battle Creek off Capital SW and just north of Backley Rd and I-94. The best Japanese Restaurant - Kumo Hibachi and Sushi on S. Westnedge and Mall Dr in Portage. The best Chinese-Japanese-Korean Restaurant - Spice and Rice on WMU's campus behind Fedex/Kinko's in Kalamazoo. The best Korean Restaurant - Lee's Garden Bibimbop, off S. Westnedge in Kalamazoo. Please don't waste your money on bad food, you deserve better.

I would rate HSB a 4 and even a 5 star if they had a Chinese name for the restaurant. Hibachi Sushi is a Japanese name and I went there expecting mainly Japanese food.Turned out 80 percent of the food is Chinese, maybe even 90 percent. The only Japanese food are the sushi and maybe 1 or 2 dishes in the buffet like the teriyaki pork. The hibachi is really not hibachi. More like Mongolian grill. And the meat offering at the hibachi is limited to cubes of beef, chicken strips and artificial crab meat. I chose the beef and it turned out to be very tough. So again, calling the place Hibachi Sushi is misleading. I will say however that the rest of the asian food is very good. Not that I had all of them but one can usually tell by they way they look. I did have the teriyaki pork, peanut chicken, shu mai, gyoza, vege eggroll. All were very good. I would recommend HSB for good Chinese buffet. But don't go there if you are expecting Japanese food like tonkatsu, tempura, udon, soba, sashimi, or real hibachi (teppanyaki). You won't find it there. Y'all should realize that there are big differences between Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Thai food. Most of all, the owners of HSB should know this.

Better than it was as Stir Max. Especially if you go for dinner. Have yet to have food poisoning which is more than i can say for Sakura 2 or some of the more expensive places around town. So yea cheap sushi and all you can eat to boot.

I loved the aesthetic fountain/bridge at the entrance, a little small but nonetheless very nice and exciting. The food was good, I wasn't insanely impressed but as far as Chinese buffets are concerned, I thought it had a very nice variety. I wouldn't say this is a complaint, but I guess I kind of expected a little more sushi there, considering the title of the place is "Sushi Buffet", but it was all good and I enjoyed the service, as well.

Was just remodeled and recently opened back up. Has a real cool interior now. Right when you walk in you end up on a bridge over a little pond with a floor to ceiling bamboo fence to your right. Food is really good. They expanded the number of buffets from before and now have hard ice cream. I didn't experience the hibachi. Not super expensive, about $10-11 per person with a drink. Wait staff was VERY attentive, even during the super busy day we went. Great place to eat overall.

I have been to this buffet quite a few times and every time I go I am not disappointed. I like just about everything they have to offer. I haven't tried the hibachi style entrees yet. The sushi is okay. I wish it wasn't a seafood type filling that they always make them with. I would like to see fresher ingredients in their sushi. All in all I will come back here and dine.

If you liked the previous Stir Max that was here, you should really like this new restaurant even more. Pretty, well-decorated atmosphere. Four buffet areas for main course items and salad and one for dessert with the big change being a switch to hard ice cream from soft, but eight choices. Very nice, you can expect a bill of $21.16 for two on Sunday afternoon if both order tea.

Hibachi Sushi Buffet always delights and never disappoints! I can't say that about many restaurants in Kalamazoo. Dinner time is the best time to go. Huge selection and lots of shrimp. Best thing to happen for Kalamazoo dining inI years!

When ever we are in the mood for a lot of food, we come here. The food has always been fresh and tons to choose from. There is many deserts and 6 or so tubs of self serve ice cream. Their sushi is meh. Haven't tried their hibachi. Docking one star for not having drink machines. Hate having to get refills from servers at any buffet.

EDIT: Both of us came down with a bad case of food poisoning. We blame this place for it. How the heck does a joint like this stay in business? The first thing you'll notice is that there aren't any labels on the buffet- so you'd better know what your dish looks like ahead of time. (In other words: Have a food allergy? Avoid this place at all costs.) The sushi is terrible- S tried a roll and mentioned it just didn't taste fresh at all- in fact, it tasted rather fishy, which good sushi just isn't supposed to do. She's currently hoping she hasn't got food poisoning, and wishes she just waited until 4:30 when her usual sushi place opened. It seemed like no matter what I tried, it wasn't worth the money- egg rolls were overdone and dry, roasted chicken was just too overdone, and most of the Chinese dishes were simply lukewarm and just sitting there to stew further in their sauces. The coconut shrimp was okay, but one dish can't save a place like this. Desserts were another disappointment- they're obviously brought in from a wholesaler and not made on-site. You get what you pay for- in this case, indigestion, sour stomach, the need to run to the Meijer's down the road for some Pepto... just avoid this joint at all costs, your stomach will thank you.

Erhmergherd. I just walked out of this place and my stomach is already giving me the finger. So gross and dirty. This is the kind of place you come to when you want to test your body's ability to fight horrible things. Gas, and indigestion, heartburn, and that feeling that maybe you'll be spending the night in your bathroom, or the Emergency Room. Our normal sushi spot down the road was closed so we drove up to Hibachi "sushi" buffet to give it a try. First off, the name is misleading. They have one little Hibachi section and about 6-8 types of sushi, all with crab. So, there's crab with salmon, California rolls, and crab, and more crab with other ingredients. And then there's a very confused Chinese-ish buffet. So there are things like over-cooked chow mein, mystery dumplings, soups, won-tons, beef and vegetable dishes, etc... And then there's the other things like corn and french fries, under-cooked fried shrimp, uncleaned shrimp cocktail. A lot of items aren't labeled or are labeled incorrectly. And then there's the typical membership club dessert tray type cakes, and some hard ice cream that you can scoop yourself. The floors are absolutely filthy, worn, and have caked-on dirt, the window sills are loaded with dust and crumbs, the booths are lumpy, worn out messes. I haven't been in a place this dirty and worn looking in my life. It's not kind of gross in a divey-but-great sort of way, it's just flat out nasty and filthy, and almost everything I ate with the exception of the won-tons (cooked fine) and the undercooked mushy fried shrimp, and the white rice, had a funny flavor, like they were cooked in dirty pans or really old oil. The bathroom had a leaky sewage smell, a clogged sink, I could go on and on. I don't take reviews like this lightly. It would be one thing if this were just a crappy buffet with food that I don't like but it's not. They serve many dishes I normally enjoy but I wouldn't recommend anybody go here, even knowing what you are getting in to, it just isn't worth it. Unless you like living on the edge. When we left my mom tried to address some of the cleanliness concerns we had but they just kind of shrugged us off as we walked out past the indoor koi-pond... with turtles. How anybody thought having sometime salmonella-carrying critters in a restaurant would be a good idea is beyond me.

This place is where Asian food meets Golden Corral. Three buffet steam tables with approx 25 typical Chinese entrees, a sushi table which didn't look too appealing (to me), a Mongolian BBQ area which looked really good but had a bunch of folks in line and I wasn't up for the wait, and a dessert bar. All that for something like $10. What I selected from the entrees was good enough that I had seconds. This is not 5-star quality Asian food, but it's decent and it's inexpensive.

  • Nate K.

5 Stars overall! The food is great and their selection is made up of classics such as lo main, egg rolls, general tso's, etc. as well as non-oriental food like pizza, fries, salad, etc. There are 3 buffets of hot food, a salad buffet, a sushi bar, hibachi bar, and dessert buffet with hard ice cream. Everything that i've tried here was good and i've never been disappointed with the food. The bridge and koi pond filled with koi and turtles is easy on the eyes upon entering the restaurant as well.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
