Took my wife there for I nice date night. First time there and have to say it was one of the nicest dining experiences that we have ever had! George our waiter was amazing! Fastest service for food and drinks that I have seen, will definitely be back and would recommend to everyone.

Went here not too long ago. I am a major foodie and enjoy going to different places to eat. My boyfriend enjoys steak so thought this would be the perfect compliment for both of us. I didn't realize they just have a salad bar option as well if you were looking not to spend too much cash. I ordered the shrimp tempura. Can't really mess that up unless you overcook it. Boyfriend of course got a steak. I enjoyed myself and my meal. I'd revisit again.

Decent food for the price. Two of us meals, two drinks each, & 1 desert was $120 with tip. Walleye & steak good. A LOT of gray haired patrons!

Great Draft beer selection! All of the MI beers. Wines by the glass were oddly selected at best. This had to have been the ultimate date place in Kalamazoo in the 80s. Rich, dark wood, low lighting, and a quiet, pretty stuffy atmosphere did not equate to the patrons who have evolved the environment by wearing shorts and t shirts. The salad bar was killer. You have to add it to your meal. The seafood chowder was incredibly old school but I though it was really good but overpriced for something that lacked anything that could be considered fresh or seafood. My liver and onions with garlic mash were about as well cooked and representative of the dish as you could expect. My lovely wife gambled with the tounedos Bluegrass. Not sure what the hell that meant but it ended up being tournedos of beef with an over reduced/salty/incredibly rich gravy (borderline shellac) with mushrooms. Overall this place was fun and I really liked to beer list, the salad bar, and the menu which had Walleye, Whitefish, and Perch as well as beef dishes. I'll be back.

We have been dining at Great Lakes for about 20 years, and it is still one of our favorite restaurants. During the summer we go there at least two nights a week. The menu is small, which we like because it is not overwhelming. And, the food quality has always been consistently superior. Their prime rib is the best we can find anywhere. The walleye is also great. And if we just want a burger some night, that is also great. The restaurant and bar areas are quiet enough that you can actually carry on a conversation with your guests. If you are looking for a noisy, sports bar with multiple TV sets where you can't hear what the person sitting next to you is saying, don't go to Great Lakes. If you are looking for a great meal at a fair price, and want to enjoy a conversation with your guests, then Great Lakes Shipping Co. is the place to be.

If you love bland overpriced food, then this is the place for you! I ordered the almond chicken for $20, it came with the smallest chicken breast I've ever seen, seriously. With a little rice on the side.

This place doesn't really have a good niche in the area. It's kind of out of the way. The food is good, but not of the highest quality.

Did not want a big dinner here tonight, tried their fish tacos, and omg, I may have a new favorite! The fish was good quality, crispy, fillings were great, accompanied by a spicy slaw that was outstanding! Best fish tacos I've ever had!

Loved the atmosphere in the lounge. Very attentive wait staff. Shrimp cocktail was awesome, fresh, large, chilled and delicious. Prime rib was very good as was the catfish on special. Only downside is if you want salad you have to purchase salad bar which is basically just making your own single traditional side salad. Will return again.

Great Lakes Shipping Co is worth coming to for two things: the bar and the salad bar. The bartenders are great at making drinks exactly as they're ordered, so if you fancy a gin martini so dry that the closed bottle of vermouth is merely waved above the shaker, this is your place. They're also likely to remember you and your drink of choice the next time you come. The salad bar is large enough to be varied and high-quality, but not so large as to be comical or unmanageable. The menu here was probably impressive twenty years ago, but prices aside, it doesn't seem to have been updated at all. It's a standard menu composed of all those things a "nice restaurant" used to be required to offer: caesar salad, crabcakes, shrimp tempura, chicken marsala, king crab legs, and various steaks. And, from what I've tried, it's all solid, but doesn't really live up to the price. It's certainly nothing that will impress or surprise you. Consider coming on Sunday or Monday, when everything on the wine list is half price. There's also a coupon on their website you can print for 20% off the entire check Sunday-Thursday, up to $20.

I got the baked scrod with shrimp, scallops and herbs; it was delicious! The brocholi was cooked just right and the service was good. A little pricey but worth it. I wasn't that hungry so I didn't pay the extra for the salad bar.

Everyone seems to be aware of Great Lakes and their salad bar, but it's really only notable because it's the only 'upscale' restaurant in town that still has this totally outmoded, 70s-80s idea of luxury. Still, I sort of enjoy the novelty, and would find it quaint if the overall quality of Great Lakes was what it used to be even only a few years ago. Firstly, your entree now only comes with only one side - that means vegetable OR starch, not both, as would normally be customary for dining at $30 minimum per guest. Secondly, I remember making a special occasion of ordering their prime rib, which rivaled Lawry's in superb flavor, portion size, and quality. I've ordered it twice now in two years - once mid rare, once medium - and both times the cut was gristly, small, and so underdone that a skilled veterinarian could have brought it back to its fully mooing former self. The servers are no longer professionals, but bemused college kids who couldn't care less about the menu or the diners' experience. Great Lakes used to be my first choice for a birthday dinner - something a little pricey, but special, and worth a little extra money. But now, I feel that my money is better spent buying my own prime rib, plus vegetable AND potato, and cooking them properly myself at home. It's depressing to watch a business circle the drain - especially an old favorite like Great Lakes. But the place I loved has apparently been gone for years already.

The only time we go here is for a drink on a cold night. The atmosphere in the bar is intimate and inviting- the food, however, is not so good. The salad bar, which people "rave" about, reminds me of one I'd see at a bad grocery store. It just isn't my cup of tea, I guess.

Considering the prices at the restaurant I was underwhelmed by the quality. That is what I get for trusting the reviews on a non-Yelp review website. :)
