Tried takeout from this place a few times. Portions are good and the prices are reasonable. The fish, however, is waaaay oversalted in my opinion and has been each time I've ordered. That might be a personal preference I suppose but it's very noticeable to me. The reason I'm giving three stars though has more to do with the long wait times for my order every single time. Look I get that the place is busy but how long does it take to drop a few pieces of fish in a deep fryer? Answer: not long. Each time I've ordered I've had to wait between 20-30 minutes for my food while crammed next to a dozen other people who are also waiting. This has even happened when I've called ahead to order which is a treat in and of itself because sometimes they put the phone off the hook (I've witnessed that being done in person) and you can't get through. All in all the food is not good enough to warrant the hassle. If I need to get my fried fish fix on I might brave it again but for now I think this one is getting crossed off the list.

Done with this place. The service has dramatically went down hill. Woman answered the phone and was talking and laughing with someone in the background. Had to repeat my order and they still got it wrong. Then my girlfriend gets attitude when she wants the order fixed at pick up. She walked out it was so bad and I'm out $35. This was the best place for fish and shrimp, but your lucky if they answer the phone anymore!

After driving by this brightly colored restaraunt every day for a year, I finally decided that in my last week in Kalamazoo, I'd give it a try. With no reviews on yelp, a Google search turned up one blogger's account of an interesting but rewarding visit, and I couldn't wait to try the seasoning he raved about. My friend K and I stopped in around 8 on a Monday. The small dining room was empty and I thought that meant we'd be in and out, but no such luck. The restaurant takes orders by phone and recently started delivering and as it turns out, calling your order in ahead seems to be the best option. The one girl working the register was answering and juggling calls on both phone lines for more than 10 minutes before she even acknowledged that I was standing in front of her with a credit card in my hand ready to order. IMO, customers who bother to come in should get priority over phone calls. When I finally ordered I asked for a small fried cod with fries and cole slaw, a little less than $7. I should have put in K's order, too, because she had another 10 minutes of waiting to get her order in around the phone calls, which literally never stopped. I actually got my food before K even ordered. Three big pieces of cod were served with wonder bread, two cole slaws, and no fries. I took it back to the counter and the girl swapped out a slaw for a huge mound of fries and apologized. When we finally dug into our food is when things really got good. The fish was amazing, flaky, crispy, well seasoned.. probably the best fried fish I've ever had. The fries were also delicious, perfectly crisp and also hit with the same incredible seasoning. The serving size was excellent, especially given that it was the small platter. Despite the slow service, which I really think they need to fix with another person answering phones at dinner time, the food was amazing. Everything is fried at this place, and fried well, and if that's your thing, don't let this one get by you. Just do yourself a favor and call ahead.

I made my second visit to Fish Express today, and this place is a winner. Forget sentiments like "as soon as I walked through the door, I could smell that this would be a great meal." At Fish Express, that experience starts in the parking lot. This place is all about deep-frying, and that focus really shows. They know exactly what they're doing, and they always hit the mark: hot, juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside. As was mentioned in a previous review, Fish Express does a lot of phone-in business. I was able to order after standing at the counter for about a minute, and that doesn't bug me a bit. I ordered a catfish (filet) and wings combo. Combos come with two slices of white bread, coleslaw, and a choice of fries or rice. I opted for fries. Pricetag: $7.95. The cashier told me "it'll be ready in thirteen minutes." I was impressed by the precision. Twelve-and-a-half minutes later, my order was ready. I accepted an offer of hot sauce and made for the door. When I got home about ten minutes later, I opened the container and got to business. The fries were crispy, and perfectly seasoned. I'm normally a big fan of ketchup on fries, but these simply didn't need it. It seemed like they may have been lightly battered, but I couldn't tell for sure. The catfish, now ten minutes out of the fryer, was still piping hot. It had a great, mild flavor, and was delicious dipped in hot sauce. Unlike the fries and fish, the wings had cooled a bit. They were pretty tasty, but not "damn that's good" good like the fish. I filled up quick enough that I didn't touch the bread and had only a taste of the coleslaw. It was coleslaw. As you might expect, the food does hit you pretty hard, so if you're in the mood for a light salad, this might not fit the bill. If you've got an appetite and/or a long day of hard work ahead of you, you'll be just fine.

I believe Patrick T. reviewed the wrong restaurant. No reservations needed at this place. Top Notch Fried Catfish, Shrimp, Hushpuppies and Fries. All House made. Ask for the Catfish Crispy with an extra dusting of the Fish Express Secret Spices. The Sauces all come in a squeeze packet and are the worst tasting in the business. The only thing missing on the owner is the concept of having high quality food for a very fair price then serving horrific accompanying sauces. Hey, we all like to build flavor on flavor. So, this is my plea. Please have your cooks whip together the most basic tartar and cocktail. Message and I will teach them for free. Do yourself a favor and go eat here. Ask for Regina during the day.
