The best I have had! My husband loves coney dogs...I prefer Chicago dogs but I gave it a try. The coney sauce was meaty and flavorful without being overly spicy. I added the "cheese", which was like cheese whiz...my only reason to drop one star. I would have prefered grated cheese. Great location and fun decor!

Friendly staff. I went on an off hour, but can imagine a very unpleasant bottle-neck could occur during lunch rush. The order area is a bit cramped. Seating, booth and counter, is available. I do not eat out often (used take away) so prices can tend annoy me but I was frankly not impressed with what I received for the money.

I've been coming to Coney Island since before I could walk. Okay, that may or may not be true, but I definitely have been coming here for years. (My mom is a big fan of Coney and chili dogs.) In high school, my two best friends and I used to rock up here every other weekend or so (they were pretty accomodating as I usually paid in loose change). And home visits from college always meant a reunion at Coney. They are my favorite hot dogs (I always got ketchup mustard and onion), and the fries taste just like they smell: delicious! Especially the chili cheese fries! The place got a revamp a few years ago, with the opening of Ouzo's next door. Their style kind've spilt into Coney, and thank God. Cos while I love Coney, it was a bit drab/dingey. Avoid the lunch time crowd if you can, as seating is pretty limited. Oh Coney of Kalamazoo, there will always be a place for you in my heart.

I have a strange fascination for places that adopt the persona of another geographic locale and adopt it as their own...Philly cheese steaks in Los Angeles, New York style pizza in Florida, New England Clam chowder in Oregon...so it was much to my bemusement while driving from Connecticut to Chicago to stumble across Coney island in KALAMAZOO! Having frequented the New York beach-side Wonder Wheel-touting real deal, and had a Nathan's Famous dog or two in my time, I just had to pull right over and get my scoff on. Well, lo and behold...they've outdone the real deal! It has the air of a local fixture, without the haughtiness...and the hot dog was perfect with a toasted bunand no fixin's snobbery...you want to put ketchup on it? Go right ahead! The fries made a nice buffer on my plate for the dog, now burdened by "the works", to lean up against lazily, and on the way out I noticed the most pleasing thing about the whole experience..the hot dog in tails and a top hat bidding me "adieu"..or "howdy" had I noticed him on the way in!

I've been coming here as long as I can remember (40+ years) and am a huge fan. Several of my friends worked here during high school. Best chili dogs in the world - with mustard and onions. I aways stop by when I'm in town. My wife even had them shipped to SF for my birthday.

I was sitting in the back of the restruant and watched this family of 3 (looked like grandparents with their grandaughter) sitting way up front in the window seat. The man's phone rang once and he grabbed it. A few minutes later it rang maybe a 1/4 of a ring and he answered it. Shortly afterwards the owner sent the waitress up to their table and she told them that the owner wants them to leave! I was shocked! and I felt bad for them. I really don't know what the problem was with the phone ringing, he was apparently a businessman conducting business on the phone but after witnessing all that, well, I don't think I'll be going in Coney Island's anymore. That was totally RUDE!

If you've grown up in this area, most likely the Coney Island is a fixture in your life, as it was your parents, their parents and your great grandparents. Though ownership has changed over the years and dog prices have gone up, the dogs still taste exactly the same and the atmosphere has only changed a little bit. I LOVE THESE DOGS! Hopefully, you will, too.

To be up front : my review is based off of food ordered and then delivered to me two blocks away : The fries were really good ! There the thin crispy type O fry. The hotdog was alright . It kind of tasted like a packaged hot dog , defiantly can tell they don't make them . I got the coney dog and it was sort of bland . I guess bland is better then over salted . The onions tasted fresh . Maybe a dine in experience would make it taste a little better .

Best Coney dog anywhere! Perfectly steamed buns, quality dog, homemade meat sauce (secret recipe) while soaking in the history and nostalgic feeling from the amazing location downtown. For all you east sider coney fans, do not compare. These are totally different style than the coneys you grew up with. Embrace this style for what it is. I came here as a kid and now my kids love it.

After today's visit I would say that I've been to the Coney Island TOO many times. The service is excruciatingly slow, and you'll pay $5 for a "large" drink and a chili cheese dog. In my opinion, the price is too expensive, especially since you're paying for a large drink and getting a medium; and frankly (no pun intended) the hot dogs aren't anything special. I'd give the place three stars if it weren't so slow, but waiting ten minutes for a chili cheese dog with two people ahead of me in line (who are also waiting on hot dogs) and four people working behind the counter is unacceptable. Also, staff always seems to be in a bad mood. . .

Just a sorry excuse for a hot dog place. Tiny flavorless dogs are not what I expected.

  • Kyle S.

This Coney place was so disappointing. I got a regular Coney, a Chicago dog, and fries. Everything was nearly flavorless. The hotdogs were really low quality. The buns didn't seem fresh. The Chicago dog had pickled jalapenos instead of pepperoncini. It also had diced cucumber on it. It just felt like they were cutting corners everywhere they could. The fries were ok, in that they tasted like fries from McDonald's, if you're into that sort of thing. I don't usually write negative reviews, but as a fan of Coney Islands, I was so disappointed. If I'm going to pay $8 for hotdogs and fries, they should be halfway decent.

Over-rated!!!... and a huge disappointment! Heard great things about a supposed "legend" of K'Zoo but what a let down. The service began as poor-to-worse. The patriarch seemed ready to serve but his staff was lethargic and bored when it came to guest service. Sure...they are a k'zoo legend but...it sucked. The service set the tone for very low level of expectations and the coney soon followed with awful taste and quality. I get it...you are a fan favorite for your locals but you need more than the standard crowd to be a legend. It would be easy to pour a cup of Wendy's chili and call it a better dog. Huge disappointment here, save your $ for something else!

I love Kalamazoo Coney Island! I hear it is actually the oldest Coney in the state of Michigan. They have been operating since 1915, making this the oldest restaurant in Kalamazoo! My favorites are the Coney dogs and Gyros. They make their tatzki sauce homemade and fresh every week. And they always have fresh onions and tomatoes. The fries are the best, however, my favorite thing for a side are the fresh chips! The chips are not in the menu but they do have them and are the same price as the fries. The hotdogs are always fresh and hot! They steam their buns and make sure everything is fresh! The chili there is the best flint style chili in the State! If you are hungry this is the best place to be!!

Friday, May 1 2015. About 7 pm. Practically empty. My date and I ordered 3 coneys. The young college student behind the register takes our money and invites us to have a seat. So we sitting there. And sitting there. I notice loud music coming out a side doorway where servers are going in and out of. Ok, whatever. Meanwhile wondering why staff are flying back and forth. There were two cooks behind the counter cooking. One was older. Looked like a boss. So after about 15 minutes I walk up to the counter to ask where are our 3 hot dogs. The cook looks down from what he was doing ( finishing a pizza?!??). He looks at his counter, turns to put it in front of his stove like he is going to just now to prepare our 3 hot dogs!?!!! What the hell? I said "you haven't even started them?" I ask the cashier for our money back. That was a joke as that person had to talk to 3 different people to get permission to give us our money back. I asked the poor gal what the deal is. There are the kitchen for the restaurant next door! What? If you can't serve 3 stinking hot dogs in 15 minutes then you need to shut your doors. I left some tip money for the waitstaff since it's not their fault that management has lost control of their business. It's a sad day for downtown Kalamazoo.

Now living in Denver I have coney dogs shipped to me for my birthday, truly the best birthday present I could ever receive from my sister! Thanks so much! Mark Helton

This is a tough review to write. I work walking distance from the Coney Island and this has been a go to place since moving from the Detroit area 15 years ago. Even the best Coney places can be hit or miss and this place was no exception for the first 13 years or so. But over the last couple of years it was way more miss than hit...I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt, but the last visit was so awful it will be a long time before I venture back. I order the Gyro Plate with Sauce on the side...the plate arrived with as much sauce on the sandwich as meat, and the meat itself was old and super dry. Fries had been sitting around for quite sometime and were soggy and cold...the rest of the family had similar experiences. Old hot dog buns, cold chili and bad fries. It's a shame, the people are nice and I really want to like this LOCAL place and avoid the chain fast food restaurants, but I can no longer recommend this place...it's pretty much rubbish. Spare your stomach and head on down the road to Theo & Stacy's for a solid Gyro or to D'Nicio's for a decent Coney or Gyro.

Great service & great food. More of a "Jackson" style coney (with seasoned meat rather than chili sauce). Could line up a dozen and eat them all! Good Gyros too.

This is the second time I'm eating here. The first time it was ok but today, I have the Gyro meal and the fries were extremely salty, when I asked the staff about them, the guy at the counter offered me to put them back to the frier????? That way the salt will come off he said. 1.- I don't think that's hygienic at all. 2.- They could offer a fresh order. 3.- I AM PAYING FOR IT, THEY AREN'T FREE. 4.- The girl that was preparing the orders commented: "if you don't want salt you have to ask without salt" in a very rude way. So they just starred at me like I'm a freak because I I refused to eat fries with lots of salt. Then this guy offered me fries from the same batch, just less quantity and way greasier. He said these are a little better. At the end he came to remove the tray and asked me if everything was ok, I told him not, the way you managed the fries issue is not the correct one. He stated: I couldn't do anything since the manager is not here and we can't give anything for free. I said: free? I PAID FOR THEM! Then he was like...you are right...is there anything I can give you? Do you want a couple dogs to go? I can take your name so next time your fries will be free...... No thanks.....there will not be next time. I had a good portion of contradiction at this place.

Tried just the Coney Dogs, they were good, but not great. Can't vouch for the other food items. The woman at the counter was very friendly. I could see stopping in again for a late night bite in downtown. But place honestly won't be my "go to" for a dog.

Sent my husband in for hot dogs tonight and he came home with dogs on stale buns and a story of how rudely he was treated by the 3 employees there. Apparently he went to the wrong end of the counter after walking in to zero greeting and all 3 employees looked at him and either went back to their conversation or turned their back on him. Pretty bummed out about this since we frequently patronize downtown restaurants.
