Closing at 5:30pm, I was nervous I wouldn't make it in time to purchase a birthday cake. I called them. They stayed open and even wrote on the cake. Thank goodness they did bc these cakes are delicious. A single layer vanilla with vanilla frosting was $19 and worth every penny. Yum!! Buying grocery store cake is idiotic.

I drove 2,000+ miles from Los Angeles to get a Boonzaaijer cake. Well, it wasn't planned that way but that's how it turned out. Got there just as they were about to close on a Friday, needing a last minute gift cake and there!!! chocolate bavarian raspberry cream. And they were able to write the long-ish message i needed (Welcome Home, Beautiful!) on top (this was a round cake 9-10 inches diameter). If anyone asks you why people need to learn cursive now that everyone has a touch screen....it's to write frosting messages for the people you love on cakes! And their master frosting artist did the job in 90 seconds! Less in fact! In short, I have never, ever had a better experience buying a cake. Ever! And I'll never forget this wonderful bakery and their delightful staff.

Nobody in Kalamazoo makes better wedding cakes or pastries. Not only are the cakes great looking, they are really mouth watering. The right balance of sweetness in the frosting to keep it from being overly sweet. Tons of other things and a favorite place to please my taste buds.

Best cakes ever. Their Bavarian cream filling is to die for! The cakes are fabulous, the cookies are great and the staff is friendly and helpful. They do close some days of the week (and annually in January) so be sure to call first if it's a long journey for you. But definitely go there and get a cake!

I've never had a bad item or service from this bakery. Everything has been up to my expectation. The only problem is that I can't try everything. We get stuff from here during the holidays and birthdays mostly. It's on the other side of town from me. But it has always been worth the trip. Everyone here is friendly. I love the fact that some of their food has small sample sizes that you can buy. You can buy a tiny piece of cake to see if you like it before you order. It's a novel idea! If you love creme, this is the place to get it. Their Bavarian creme is the closest you will get to ethnic without getting on a plane/boat.

While visiting my dad in Michigan they purchased a chocolate three payer, Bavarian layer cake for my husband and I - before eating I was told they have "the best" cake. "Best" does not accurately describe the experience of eating their cake. The cake was so amazing I insisted my dad drive me 30 minutes back to Kalamazoo so I could go into the bakery to meet the man behind the finest cake I have ever eaten. The son now runs the shop and is the artist behind the recipe that has been in the family for over 100 years. The icing is simply luxurious - not overly sweet - just perfect creaminess that just melts in your mouth. The layers are filled with Bavarian cream - NOT the stuff we are used to eating inside a donut! This stuff is just magic. Light and creamy. The cake itself is so delicately moist. I have truly never had a better food experience. Ever. My husband and I just stared in awe and kept saying out loud "how did they do this" -- it's clear the recipes in this kitchen have been perfected - there is nothing that can be made better with them. The price! OMGoodness - a 3 layer cake - $22 bucks! What?!!!! You can get an entire wedding cake from here for under $100! This family is not out to make a kiling because these cakes are so good they could charge triple and people would pay it. It's steal. I am online now seeing how I get can one shipped to Memphis for my friends and family here to try - to experience !

Really wanted to like this place but a couple things just turned me off. 1. They charge for plastic forks? What is THAT about? I mean honestly who's going to pay for a plastic fork and knife? That's just ridiculous. I really hope I'm misinterpreting why they have bags of forks and knives there with price tags on them. There was also a sign that said they offered a free cup of coffee if you weren't taking your food to go... Jeez just charge me for the coffee then if you're that hard up cuz I'm sure not paying for a plastic fork and knife. 2. The person who handed me my pastries touched them with their bare hands. Now I'm no prude and after 20 years in the restaurant business I'm well aware that food service workers don't always wear gloves when they're supposed to but when you're doing it right in front of me? At least pretend. Humor me a little. I have no idea when the last time you washed your hands was or if you just went to the bathroom or handled money or took out the trash, etc. at least make it look good even if you literally just washed them before I walked in. Not to mention it's also the law. It's a cute store with a nice selection so I can't say I'll never go back. The pastries were tasty enough albeit a little dry but I got there just before closing time so I can understand I may have gotten something that may have been made in the morning and was sitting in the case all day. 3 stars based on taste alone.

Boonzaaijer Bakery is so famous and so good that the TSA security at Kalamazoo airport knew what I had in my baggage. He could smell that delicious cake. Yes, believe me I was wowed. That bavarian cream, moist cake, and icing just takes me to a wonderful world of fancy cakes, ball gowns, and tea parties. It's a good thing I don't live in Kalamazoo because I would get a cake just for the heck of it. I tried the vanilla cake with bavarian cream, red velvet cake, and chocolate cake with bavarian cream. I would go back to all three, but if I had to choose one it would be the chocolate bavarian cream cake. I brought 2 cakes back to NY and I'm planning my next return. This is a must visit in Kalamazoo - just don't go on Sundays or Mondays because they are closed!
