This location has truly wonderful staff - they always have a quick turn-around time for their drinks, and are exceptionally friendly! This morning I was in a nasty mood (thanks to a guy from MA tailgating me for 15 miles...), and just within the 2-minute interaction with the baristas they had made my morning infinitely better! You guys rock.

Coffee by Design is the Starbucks of Maine. This location is tucked inside main L.L. Bean store on the bottom floor. Not only is the location ideal if you're beginning your day early at the outlets, but it also has free wifi, friendly staff and LOTS of seating space. Plus, I noticed that the bags of whole bean coffee are less expensive here then other locations throughout Portland [maybe that's just Portland, but man, I wish I'd picked up a bag here!]. They also have a LOT more flavors and roasts then I'd seen at any of the other shops. Take note, skip the Starbucks and take advantage of this hidden gem!

It might be inside LL Bean's but it is truly a locally coffee roasted coffee shop powering the locals who power Freeport. A great first stop in the morning when walking the dogs and stopping in for a coffee. And my dogs love being outside creating and getting to know everyone else. Over all a great quick stop, go and do work at or just hang out. You are sure to see locals all day year round.

Apparently it's been an exceptionally long time since I've been inside of L.L. Bean, because I had no idea they hosted a Coffee By Design (which is, by proxy, rustic and woodsy feeling). The best part? It's unbelievably accessible - as in: I don't have to go inside of actual L.L. Bean at all, because there's a street-level door that deposits you right into the little cafe. And, as others have mentioned, it sits adjacent to the rocky water garden area in front of Beans making it positively lovely in the spring through fall (winter is great, too, but more-so because of the ample sunlight that pours in from the nearly floor to ceiling windows). When I arrived at around 3pm on Monday afternoon, there was just a handful of locals - two folks reading on the couches and two high schoolers doing homework at a table. Without wait, I went right up to the counter and ordered a tall bold with vanilla flavored soy milk all for a grand total of just $1.78. (Side note: I love that Coffee By Design a) is a place that speaks all coffee talk. Doesn't matter if you say tall or small, grande or medium, they are smellin' the grinds you're roasting [if you get my metaphor]; and b) is SO. DARN. CHEAP. Thank you, CBD, for making something that's both delicious and locally made affordable; that's becoming a rarity, it really is!). "How long you guys been down here?" I asked the barista as she took my order. "Oh, about four years. And it's just awesome," she responded warmly. "We get a healthy amount of tourists, but this has become a really great space for people who work in the immediate area and needed a place to feel welcome, at home, and have meetings at." Both her and the other baristas friendly dispositions seemed genuine and never wavered from customer to customer (whether they were serving an impatient usual, an indecisive elderly man, or an overly chatty four year old). Love me some CBD, and am glad to see they've found a(nother) home in Freeport!

I love their spicy chai tea latte, it has a much nicer kick than the CTLs you get from the larger chains. (When you order, they ask you if you want it regular or spicy) After some shopping at the LLBean extravaganza and the outlet mecca of New England, it's nice to take a break for a quick pick me up before you power through some more shopping.

Coffee was very bitter (latte) - and service by the barista was with a scowl ;-) - ambience is nice however as part of the LLBean shop. Not recommended if you want a nice coffee and service with a smile. Can I have my tip back???? @-@

Unfortunately for this cafe, the only thing going for it is the LL bean store upstairs. The barista served my coffee Luke warm, yuck!! The sandwhich, a buffalo chicken sandwhich was very dry and very tasteless. I like bland normally, but this sandwhich was just sad and poor! Much as I wanted to like this cafe, they had nothing going for it!! skip it . I had to stave off my depression afterwards with major retail therapy.

Beautiful light sparkles in what used to be the children's department at LLBean. Shows you how often I shop here since CBD has been located here for about 3 years. I happened here with a group of new friends and when deciding what to get, I spied the pumpkin spice latte and instantly thought of the hilarious twitter profile of "White Girl Problems" (not to be confused with Murderer Problems) and the assumption that all white girls love Edward Cullen, Uggs and Pumpkin spice lattes. So based on my blonde status, I thought I'd live up to everyone else's preconceived notion of a "white girl" and go ahead and order one. #YOLO!. I found the atmosphere soothing despite the hubub of shoppers. It was a glorious day, really and there was a craft fair in process throughout downtown Freeport. My beverage was indeed the essence of pumpkin pie and I lived off the intense buzz for a few hours later. Baked goods are on offer and I believe some are gluten free. I would choose this as a great place to relax before, during and after shopping Freeport above Starbucks just because CBD is local and has a great vibe and lots of light as well as a waterfall. Don't think it's open 24 hours like the rest of the store.

Great place to relax while shopping at LL Bean. Lovely waterfall right outside windows, friendly staff and great coffee! Free wireless and a good selection of pastries top off a fun coffee shop. Far better atmosphere than Starbucks down the street which is small and dark. Also CBD is locally owned. All good.

Stopped in here after visiting the LLBean upstairs. The chai latte was one of the best I've had. The ordering/pick up system seemed to be a little confusing, but otherwise, this place was great.

It seems like every time I visit the original LL Bean store, they've made changes or renovations: Added a new building, removed an old building, combined buildings, expanded buildings, swapped store merchandise around, moved departments around, shifted the location of their factory outlet, installed a GiANT BOOT, added an entrance, etc.; the store (and the surrounding outlets) are in a constant state of flux. To their credit, LL Bean is forward-thinking and always trying to find the intersection of customer convenience and shopping interest. Finding the factory outlet last month was like finding the gateway to Narnia - I had no idea that the store had moved from it's previous location down Rt 1 to its current location amongst the heart of Outlet City, and so it was a pleasant surprise to find it so closely located to the Mothership. During this particular visit, I discovered that they've added a CBD coffee shop that OFFERS DIRECT ACCESS to the LL Bean store from Main Street. No more walking uphill to the main entrance - those 14 steps (including a stop at the Ben & Jerry's) can leave you WINDED. And who wants to huff and puff and sweat through their t-shirt when they've got import window shopping to do? I just want to say that I LOVE CBD. They are hands-down my favorite coffee brand. I love the straightforwardness and simplicity of their shops, as well as the consistent quality of their coffee. And judging by all the 'CBD' stickers on cars that I'm stuck behind at red lights throughout the city, this particular brand is part of the commercial and cultural fabric of southern Maine. I AM NOT, however, a huge fan of this particular location. At least for now. On my most recent visit, the baristas and the crowds were moving SO SLOW. Granted, it was a Saturday afternoon, so everyone comes out of the woodwork to visit LL Bean. I don't know if on this particular Saturday someone at CBD had blown the conch horn to summon every 65 year old in 50 mile radius, but they all seemed to be in line in front of me. And judging by their interactions, NONE OF THEM had ever previously visited a coffee shop. I had to listen from 10 persons deep in line as each barista patiently explained the same things over and over again to each customer: coffee brews and strength, espresso shots, the current pastry selections, adding something pumpkin-y to their latte, etc. I think it took no less than 15 minutes to get a small cup of coffee. Truly. The coffee was good, however. As always. Perhaps it was a fluke and I'm just an idiot for showing up on a Saturday afternoon expecting a fast and smooth transaction. I'm sure the irresistible caffeinated tractor beam of CBD will pull me be back, and I will be happy to leave a higher rating (if warranted) when I do!

I'd been coming to LLBean in all the years I've been alive but for some reason hadn't made it to Coffee By Design until last week. We've always ended up at the 1912 Cafe at the other end of the store just because it's more visible from where we usually park. Very different feel and offerings at the two locations though. If coffee and tea is what you're looking for, you'll want to come here. There were many options but finally I was down to two: one of the tea lattes or the special beverage of the moment, the almond mocha. The employees were very patient with me as I took a few minutes to think over my decision and finally I decided on the almond mocha which was an excellent choice. It was perfect! One of the most delicious espresso drinks I've had in a while. From the assortment of snacks available that included cookies, muffins, biscotti, a basket of yesterdays pastry, Luna bars, and some other things, I bought a bag of herb popcorn that became a great road food snack for my 4hour drive back to Connecticut. Next time I'm at LLBean and I need some caffeine in my life I'll skip the Starbucks down the street and come here instead.

A really solid coffee shop & right underneath the amazing L.L.Bean store right upstairs. In addition, there is a great view outside of a mini waterfall, which makes sitting and working in the coffee shop even more enjoyable. I really enjoy tea lattes, and I love places that can make tea lattes out of all of the teas that they offer. They have lots of other options too for those who aren't tea-enthusiasts like me. The baristas were super nice and made my drink really quickly. The pricing wasn't too bad either - my 16 oz. drink made with soymilk was only $3.50! There is free wifi and convenient access to outlets, and the wooden chairs and tables really match with the decor of L.L.Bean. After stopping by here, I definitely will keep coming whenever I'm in the Flagship store!
