Was my wife's first time to Maine and staying in a bed & breakfast. Staying at the Nicholson Inn was a joy! The room was very neat and clean. Jane & Alden Grant were very nice hosts and welcomed us into their home. Nick, a beautiful black lab also would greet guests as well. The location is about 100 yards from LL Bean and in the middle of the shops and restaurants on Main Street. Very convenient. Jane and Alden also provided us with some guidance in searching the cost for the lighthouses and other scenic points. Did I mention that Alden is a great cook! Excellent breakfasts included in our stay. We stayed in Cambridge, MA and had Costco muffins for breakfast. It was a pleasant surprise to be treated to a home cooked meal each morning! I would recommend this place to all my friends. I'm from Hawaii and used to the Aloha Spirit and hospitality. Alden and Jane showed us true Maine hospitality!

The breakfast alone makes this a five star, but the owners are super friendly which made it even better. We stayed in the blue room which was charming. We enjoyed our visit and would definitely go back. Oh, and the owner was sweet to pack us some snacks for the road.
There are plenty of B&B's in Freeport, but it's hard to imagine any finer then the James Place Inn. The owners, Tori and Robbin, are incredibly warm and hospitable. The location is perfect in Freeport, 3 blocks from L. L. Bean and all the restaurants in town. Weather permitting, you can enjoy breakfast outside under a crisp blue sky. Robbin makes a variety of incredible breakfasts each and every morning to start your day. We can't wait to go back to Freeport and when we do, we will be making reservations at the James Place Inn. Simply superb.
I have nothing but absolute love for this place, and Robin and Tori. The experience from beginning to end could not have been more ideal. My sisters and I were on a leaf peeping tour in VT and NH and decided VERY last minute that we didn't want to come back home to MA, but stay up in Maine and go sailing the next day. We called around to different hotels and inns and everything was booked, didn't sleep 3, or way too expensive. The James Place Inn came recommended from another owner and when we called, Robin answered and immediately established such a great rapport with us. He had one room left for the night, with a queen + twin, and gave it to us at a discount. Sweet! We got there late (around 10pm) and were exhausted from the days travels. We walked right in to our room and were immediately swept away by the charm. All of the details were covered, and it had such a warm, cozy feel it was EXACTLY what you would want from an Inn in Maine. Clean, comfortable beds, little knick knacks on the shelves, a clawfoot tub, the works. The next morning we went down for breakfast and it was loaded with fruit, pastries, and they also made quiche, frittatas, ham, baked beans, pancakes and more. Everything was delish! We ate out on their patio while we chatted with the owners. Robin and Tori are so unbelievably normal and friendly, it felt like we had just spent the night with friends. I cannot recommend the James Place Inn enough. This is such a perfect blend between an impersonal hotel, and an overly invasive B&B. Mixed in with the charm and quaintness of the home, I would consider staying here everytime I'm in the area.

This is my wife's and my first experience staying at Bed & Breakfast. The inn keeper Mark and Nancy made the experience so enjoyable that we considered staying an extra night. Their hospitality was amazing. And Nancy's breakfast was delicious! If you are looking at going to Freeport , I wouldn't look anywhere else but here.
Extremely friendly innkeepers- they knew everyone's names etc. they're very accommodating of special dietary needs - we are vegan and they made some wonderful banana muffins for us. Comfortable beds and everything we needed from our room.
Nancy and Mark made our stay very special. The Inn is located within walking distance to food, shopping and entertainment. Nancy and Mark have made an effort to visit and support the local business's; they were able to direct us easily to areas we would enjoy during our stay. As others have stated, the food is unique and delicious. They hve many stories about their experience with the Inn and from their lives. We were able to relax, and laugh a lot. Looking forward to another trip with a longer stay.

Maine Craft Distilling

Reviews:
I stumbled upon Maine Craft Distilling's brand new tasting room in Freeport around Christmas. They had just opened a week before my visit but you never would have known it - the space, spirits and service were all fabulous and I couldn't see any opening-week kinks that needed working out. I'd been wanting to go to MCD's Bayside tasting room for months so when I found myself with some time to kill while waiting for a friend who was running late, I thought I would just duck in and sample a spirit or two. Instead, I ended up spending 30+ minutes tasting all of MCD's offerings. My bartender/educator, Emily (I'm 99% sure that was her name), was friendly, warm and informative and she just kept pouring. How could I say no? I think I tried everything that Maine Craft Distilling makes and I especially liked the Fifty Stone Whiskey, Queequeg Spiced Rum and Chesuncook Gin. The Blueshine - blueberry moonshine - was a little sweet for me but it would be great in a summery cocktail. Emily's pours were generous and the backstories of the spirits were quite interesting. Pro tip: there is also a small (for now) cocktail menu available so if you want to stay a while, this might be the best route to go. As I sat on my tractor-seat bar stool sipping spirits, I couldn't help but notice the gorgeous space. A beautiful, long farm table sits right in the center of the main tasting room area - perfect for a tasting with a large group of friends (hint, hint, Steff!) and off to the side of the entrance there's a lovely little library nook with books and a comfortable leather chair. Emily told me that MCD will also be finishing the upstairs space in the next few months to provide more room for tastings and events. Note: tastings are free (for now) so tip your bartender generously! Perfect space, great experience and a great addition to Freeport.
Hubby and I went to the movies a few weeks ago, and right next door to the theater was this little place. Lovely decor and free tastings. First thing they say as we walk in is "We are not a brewing company" I cracked up, I get it, there are plenty around. This place has whiskey and rum. They make their own. Tastings are free and for $4 you can have a little cocktail, I had a dark and stormy and hubby had a grapefruit rum. What a find. a cute little place. Glad we found it. I just like the atmosphere and the staff was a joy to chat with.
Sample their spirits, which are pretty good, but really only bought a few cocktails which were delicious and quite creative. The bartender was friendly and explained each one of the spirits.

This B&B is absolutely fantastic. My wife and I had a truly great experience here in July of 2013. We spent 2 nights. Scott and Mary, the innkeepers, are both genuinely wonderful people. The breakfast is to die for. Everything was delicious and Scott keeps the coffee flowing. We were in the Portland Head Suite. The room, bathroom and TV room were spotless. The giant king size bed was so comfortable it was hard getting up in the morning! The location is about 2 blocks away from all the shops and food - perfect setting away from all the noise. The town got a bit crowded so having that little distance was a blessing. Wi-Fi worked great and is free. We cannot wait to get back! We love Maine and having this B&B just makes it that much better.
Lovely setting. Good location in town. But do not go for the breakfast. It was small amounts and not the quality we expected at a B&B at this price. The hosts were very accommodating and helpful providing lots of local information. The room was comfortable
I love love love this place ( is that enough love). The owners are absolutely fabulous and so caring it shows in all regards of this wonderful B and B. The place is meticulously clean and well maintained. Their rooms are wonderfully laid out with flat screens tvs and direct tv...if you are into that stuff. Free wifi. Their location is so awesome: Close to hiking, Close to shopping, Close to dinning...but not too close. Breakfasts are amazing gourmet treats. And I am a food snob. Great place just to sit around and hang out or walk a few blocks and go to the church of L. L Bean....that latter. I highly recommend this place you will not be disappointed.

Highest marks for the Applewood Inn and its delightful owners, Jenn and Jay, who went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. From the first time that I communicated with Jay, I mentioned that we had a toddler. Their web site said that they welcomed "children of all ages." I've never, ever heard of a B&B that allowed little kids, so I was disbelieving and didn't want to be disappointed when we actually arrived. He made it clear that we were welcome, and had a pack-n-play in the room when we arrived. (One note: they use perfumed laundry soap, so if this matters to you you should bring your own sheet.) The room was wonderful: spacious, a comfortable bed, a full bath with a walk-in shower and a separate two-person jacuzzi (which we never used, sadly, but it was nice to know that it was an option). Breakfast was great, the location fantastic, and the other guests were people who we could have been friends with -- compassionate and kind when we stumbled down the steps after a slightly challenging night of attempted sleep. :-) I could imagine choosing a different place if I was looking for a guaranteed adults-only B&B; but not one of the adults who met us or our little boy seemed upset by his toddlerishness, or by the fact that he didn't sleep perfectly the first night. Our experience certainly compels me to return, even long after our boy is grown, and to be similarly gracious to other parents with young kids, because now "I've been there" (as the others said to us!). Thanks; we will definitely be back.
I cannot express in words how exceptional our stay was at The Applewood Inn! Our room, The Alev Suite, was perfect and cozy for two. California king sized bed, skylights, and a jacuzzi. What else can you ask for? Jay, the owner of the establishment, was an absolute delight! He and his family really make this inn feel as if you're staying at your favorite cousin's house as opposed to a hotel. You can enjoy coffee and the company of Jay, his family, and other guests sitting at a huge communal style table in the dining room while chef makes delicious breakfast fare. I can't wait to come back! Did I mention they have their own garden, fruit trees, and chickens?
Jay welcomed us and our little dog into what felt like their personal home, upon our late arrival at the Applewood Inn this past July. We were just passing through town and needed a quick overnight here after a botched hotel reservation. This warm, friendly inn, not only had spacious, tastefully decorated rooms, a comfortable bed and gorgeously updated bathrooms, it also offered a fantastic breakfast in the morning. The freshly squeezed orange juice was my favorite. We didn't want to leave that morning. It's the kind of place you'd like to linger and relax for the day. The location was perfect. It's located on a quiet sleepy street in town yet just a stones throw from the LL Bean shops. We hope to return annually.

Real donuts. Real people (the server was making custom donuts with two young children when we came in). Delicious donuts, not in any way similar to the mass produced stuff you get at your local DDonut place on the way to work each day. These have body and flavor. In our case, it was a raised maple frosted mouthful of deliciousness. Oh, and the coffee's great, too. Fair trade and delicious. A very fun place to stop on a cold, rainy morning.
Fantastic donuts! I loved that they had chocolate with vanilla icing--like my favorite cake, but for breakfast. The maple was awesome too. Basically, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose here.
This place is great, from their freshly brewed coffee to the freshly baked donuts and twists, which reminded me of the Krispy Cream back in NY. You can also create your own donut or twist. If you like they will make you a nice italian soda which also tasted amazing. This place is easy to miss as its a bit inside from the main road. I am glad we didn't miss it. Its small and cozy with free WiFi so you can catch up on all your social media or upload the pictures and videos without relying on cell signal which tends to fail and drain battery. PS. CASH ONLY.

My absolute favorite place to eat in Freeport. Great selection of vegetarian sandwiches, which is rare! Also, friendly and fast, even when busy.
You definitely can't leave here without trying the chocolate chip cookies. They are seriously amazing and not to be missed. This is mostly a lunch spot but I'm fairly certain that they have breakfast items as well. I've never been for breakfast but the lunch items are delicious so I imagine that they make a mean breakfast sandwich. I'm a creature of habit so my favorite thing here is the Greek roll-up with hummus and without the vinaigrette. My husband likes meat so he usually gets something meaty and always enjoys it. They use boars head deli meats and cheeses. And they can make just about any kind of sandwich imaginable. The menu is quite large and the food is tasty. Lots of sandwich and wrap options for vegetarians. And seriously-don't forget the cookies!
Amazing food, GREAT friendly staff and the most amazing chocolate chip cookies. Definitely the best choice if you're in the area

We were traveling through ME during Labor Day weekend and luckily found this wonderful B&B. Our host, Bev, was extremely friendly & welcoming! She cooked a wonderful breakfast and welcomed us to bottled water and tea or coffee anytime day or night. Our room was extremely spacious, decorated nicely and very clean. The house was beautiful with a huge yard and within walking distance to town and restaurants. Our black lab was also welcomed with open arms! Definitely a place to return to and recommend to our friends!!!
Fourth of July Weekend = Small Town America Staying in Maine = Doing It Right, B&B Style After searching and searching for the right place to spend the Fourth, I decided on Freeport, Maine, a place that I used to visit a lot as a child when I lived on a sailboat. After searching some more, I found the perfect B&B. Bed: When we first pulled up to the Captain Briggs, it was pouring. I mean, hurricane-type rain, but through the deluge, I could still see the cute white, New England house would be entirely too charming, and it was. We were staying the Bayberry Room, underneath the stairs, but not in a bad way. The room had a large bay window, and comfortably accommodated the queen bed and two chairs. There was even a fireplace filled with candles for us. We had a private bath (as does every room) although the shower and toilet were separate from the sink. The common room had two dining tables and enough seats for everyone, as well as a few board games, DirecTV and a mini fridge. Not one to be behind the times, this B&B has free WiFi as well, which came in handy when we chose to stay in after dinner one night and watch TV online. Outside there is a grill and large lawn with a bench swing. The Captain Briggs is pet-friendly, too, there were two different dogs staying in the house while we were there. I can't say enough how supremely nice our hosts were, though. Bev and Chuck went out of their way, not only to wait up for us on the long drive up from the city, but to make sure we were comfortable and having a good time. Great people at a great location with a great bed. Captain Briggs is off of Main Street, but not far off. A quick 5 minute walk will take you from the quiet Maple Street to the center of the outlet stores on Main. Bev and Chuck include a binder in each room with suggestions for food and activities that was extremely helpful, both when shopping and describing how to get around. Breakfast: For someone who didn't really know how to cook before she opened a B&B, Bev sure can serve a mean breakfast. Every morning there was a fruit dish, followed by a carb and a some protein. There was a strawberry parfait our first morning, followed by walnut syrup drizzled waffles and sausage. Almost too sweet, but I still devoured it all. Next up was a fresh fruit salad, some delicious cinnamon bread--the recipe is online, thankfully--and a hash brown crusted veggie and cheddar quiche. The last morning, when we actually moved from our usual spots, was a frozen berry sorbet with blueberry pancakes and bacon. Coffee and a variety of teas were always available, as well some some simple pastries or cereals if that's all you wanted. If you have to leave very early in the morning, Bev'll even prepare a little to to basket for you so you won't get hungry. All in all, it was one the best night's sleep I've had in a while: listening to the rain the night we arrived, with candle light in an old slightly-creaky house. It was the middle of the season and, considering we stayed over 4th of July weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, it was a really reasonably priced, under $150 a night. So much fun we had, we're already planning a second trip!
The owners are very accommodating, welcoming and great hosts. The bathroom in the Azalea room is small but not a problem. The inn is within walking distance of the shopping area and excellent places to eat. I'd stay here again!!

My sister-in-law and I are visiting from California, staying at the Candlebay Inn. We asked for a dinner recommendation and was given the Tuscany Grill. We had the white clam, red potato, garlic herb butter, roasted sweet corn, pancetta, asiago, Pecorino, Romano, and mozzarella cheeses, parsley and red pepper flakes pizza. The salad was local goat cheese and citrus, spinach, arugula, shaved fennel, apples, orange medallions with honey and citrus dressing. It was the best meal have had dining out for a long time. Our service was fine, Nichole, our waitress was serving the bar area and tending bar. If she were wearing a fitbit, it would have exploded. Totally enjoyable experience.
Love this place every time we come in to town. Usually I tend to get the same thing, not wanting to mess with what I know is good. But here, I try something new each time, and every time it's better than the last! They do a great job of taking orders for take out. My only complaint is that it is very expensive. Two entrees with no drinks or apps can cost you around 50 dollars. I get that I'm on vacation, but still.. It's expensive.
This is one of our all time favorites. Whenever we want to go out to dinner but can't decide, it always comes down to the Tuscan Bistro. Their pizza is excellent, but personally I prefer their other entree dishes. The "Chicken Under a Brick" is a family favorite. It's an unbelievable combination of flavors. The appetizers are always great too, especially the charcuterie board. Service is also very good. All around a great place for a yummy and fun dinner.
