After another Tuesday night of salsa class, my buddy Dave and I wandered around Bethesda looking for an open restaurant after 10pm. We found this place, and decided to check it. First, the food ranges from sandwiches, to salmon and pizza. I went with the Italiano sandwich, which had a nice combination of roast beef and lettuce. I thought it wasn't too bad for the price, and saved the bag of chips for another lunch. David felt the only drawback was that the bread was a little hard, but it seemed to be ok for me. Nothing outstanding here, but a good place to go for a late night eat in Bethesda

    Consistently shitty service. Great food.

I have gone here for lunch a few times, I like them. So far I have gotten the Light Chicken TBM, and the Light Fire Roasted Veggie on wheat. I think they are both very good and hits the spot. I really enjoy the fact that their bread is very thing, I hate having a sandwich that is mostly bread! Adds calories and it's a way for your sandwich to be thin and lacking. But that is just me. Their prices are a bit high, but average, I am satisfied when I eat a sandwich, but I am not stuffed. I don't like that feeling for lunch anyway, but their sandwiches can be maybe 1-2" larger. Their line is a bit confusing when you go for the first time because they have 3 signs hanging, "Order sandwich and pizza here" "Order soup here" "Order salad here". So there are 3 confusing lines, I cut someone line once because I did get a bit confuzzled. :( I paid no problem, nice and quick! You get a choice of chips or carrots, I got carrots, but every time I get them, they are really yucky! I was thinking, how can carrots be yucky? Well, apparently the company that supplies the carrots are. It's not cosi's fault. I also tried their raspberry mojito lemonade, it was pretty good, I was happy :)

What can I say, I'm a fan of the Tuna Melt. It's very tasty served warm with melted cheese. The ordering- paying procession is a bit wacky but I've never had a bad sandwich from Cosi. I don't care for the coffee. It's that Starbucks burnt flavor. No Thanks. Raspberry Lemonade is good. The eating area is cramped but food and service is good.

It's a great place to bring your laptop and have a sandwich. I usually get the Chicken TBM Melt. They make good salads here too. Also a good place to meet friends for coffee. I enjoy being able to make my own S'mores.

I don't come here anymore because... - The service is just awful sometimes. There have been a few times when I was completely ignored by my server as he/she was chatting it up with other servers and making us wait for long periods of time for our food/bill/water/everything. - Yes, it's great that Cosi is open pretty late, but what's bad is that they end up running out of food. A lot of items become unavailable after a certain hour, and it sucks. - I was shocked when Cosi, a sandwich bar, ran out of BREAD. And it wasn't even that late in the evening! - It's a bit overpriced. I want this place to be great - I love the concept, the food is pretty good. But I just don't think I'll be back here.

I really love the bread and sandwiches they make at Cosi. A little better than Panera in my opinion. My favorite is the light TBM (tomato, basil, mozzarella) on whole wheat. Super tasty, not to mention way less calories than some of the other choices. Their food is not super cheap but I think it's worth every penny. :)

I eat here for lunch about once every week or so. I love it. The food - actually the BREAD - is so wonderful and always hits the spot for me. Lately I've been on a flatbread pizza kick, and the fresh out of the oven, cheese-bubbling pizza never disappoints. Their marinara sauce they use for the pizza is really good too. I prefer their melts and pizzas to the cold sandwiches, but that's just my personal preference. I'm not sure how cozy people want a lunch spot to be? I don't think the place is comparable to a coffee shop in terms of menu, etc. so I don't understand why people would want the atmosphere to be coffee-shop-like? While Cosi can get crowded and the table arrangement is awkward at times, I don't ever feel like I'm eating in a cold warehouse... The best part of Cosi is waiting in line and nibbling on the ends of the warm, freshly-baked bread that the baker throws into a communal bowl. Yum. And lunch for under $7 always makes me happy.

The food is good and consistent, however, the service is consistently terrible. I usually order lunch for more than 3 people and they always seem to get it wrong. Not only that, its hardly ever ready and together on time. If you tell me 20 minutes, i will be there in 20 minutes. Bad kitchen communication.

Ugh. I've been obsessively eating eating Spring Mill's hummus and veggie sandwiches for lunch for awhile now (see previous review). Today, I decided to go to Cosi for a change of pace. In short: I should have stuck with Spring Mill. I planned on ordering a hummus and veggie sandwich for comparison's sake, but they were all out of hummus. Ok, so I'll have the fire-roasted veggie sandwich. (I'm a vegetarian, if you hadn't gathered). The bread was dry and bland, and it had a pathetically meager smear of some unidentified white spread on it. "Fire-roasted" suggests "hot" to me, but the sandwich was ice-cold. They gave me the option of chips or carrots, and I went with the carrots. They were small, dried out, and had a "use by" date of tomorrow. Gross. And the worst part? IT COST OVER SEVEN DOLLARS. Go down the block to Spring Mill and have an infinitely more delicious, cheaper sandwich from a locally owned business.

It's a pretty nice spot to hang out or meet up with friends. The setting is pleasantly cozy and modern and the staff claims that Cosi has free Wi-Fi (wireless internet), although I do not know for sure. On the other hand, the merely average food is severely overpriced and the cafe isn't self-service, so getting coffee refills is a hassle. The good thing about this Bethesda location is that it's one of the few coffee shops or cafes in MoCo (Montgomery County) that is open later into the night. Would I return? Ehhh, maybe, only because it's one of the few cafes open late into the night.

Good sandwiches with the home-baked hearth bread. Large portions on the toppings and their salads are great as well. I recommend the Chicken BMT (Basil Mozzarella Tomato) sandwich. But the service is rather poor. At lunch (I am here at least once a week -I work in the same building), the salad line is usually 5-10 minutes with only one server, while the sandwich line is quicker as they can have several preparers. But you can wait 10 minutes to pay on some days and don't even try to combine a sandwich order with a salad. In the evenings, they switch to a waiter/waitress system, and they tend to stand at the bar and ignore the customers. The last time I came at 5:30, it took more than 5 minutes to get noticed and I was the only one in the place and there were 3+ servers. The furnishings are quite tired - if you want one of the upholstered chairs, benches or couches, expect to sit on a rip or at least the layered spills from the last 5 years. When this place opened in 2001 (as Cosi/Zandu), I was quite impressed with the decor, but they have not kept it up at all. Finally - if you want to be cozy in the winter - stay away from the front of the place. The wood oven create a tremendous draft and 20 MPH winds come in whenever the door is opened.

I had an excellent lunch experience this Saturday at this Cosi location. Maybe because the weather was gorgeous as we lunched outdoor or maybe because I was with good company... I enjoyed my lunch very much. This was only my second time eating at a Cosi and I wasn't sure what's good. Friend recommended the Tandoori Chicken Sandwich so Tandoori Chicken it was! I also got their new limited time Raspberry Mojito Lemonade (non-alcoholic) for drinks. I got the sandwich duo paired with the Cosi signature salad and it was just very refreshing. The tandoori chicken was flavorful and the roasted red peppers complimented it very well. Can't beat sitting outside on a nice warm day, sipping the Raspberry Mojito Lemonade and chatting it up with your buddies. It was an inexpensive and fun lunch. I liked :)

My Shanghai chicken salad included: 6 fairly small pieces of chicken 16 pieces of inedible salad core stalk All for $7,50 -- why is it so hard to get a good salad? I have yet to find a good salad in Bethesda..........

This is a great Cosi in a chain of what I have found to be mostly subpar locations. It's really nice to eat outside at this location when the weather is nice. The staff is excellent, fast and friendly.

It's hard to like a place that asks that you wait to be seated but then has no one at the host stand or seating people. So we sat in the waiting area until someone noticed us after ten minutes. Then we were sat and our server took another ten minutes to come and take our orders. No one checked on us, no one offered to bring more hot water for our teas, she just came by and removed the mugs wordlessly after having left us alone for 50 minutes. Having served, I don't tip less than 20 percent but we did here.

I often go here for a coffee or smoothie after running on the CCT in Bethesda. I go because it is a place one can sit with friends on a weekend morning, either inside or outside (in fair weather). They serve runners (even sweaty), bike riders, roller bladers, etc., and they have a good assortment of the foods you'd like after a workout. They even list calories. Other things equal, these features would get me to give it an enthusiastic rating. However, the food and drinks I have ordered are bad and the service is poor and often rude. They say they offer oatmeal until 11AM, but about half the time I have gone before 11, they have been out of oatmeal -- or it has been soupy/runny or filled with lumps. Is it that hard to make oatmeal? And why not serve breakfast foods past 11? Their coffee drinks are bad to undrinkable, and their hot chocolate is poor as well. They are often extremely slow, even when they have adequate staff and few customers, and the managers are disinterested when I have brought the food and service problems to their attention. We'll be looking for another place to gather after our Bethesda runs.

  • Trang N.

Cosi wasn't so cozy. I thought there would be more couches. There were six of us and we had to squeeze around two small tables that were pushed together. The menu looked alright, but we came for dessert. The S'mores Oreos was too sweet for my taste. It was overpriced for some marshmellows and chocolate too. This place seems better for couples or tiny groups; A nice stop after a movie at the nearby cinema.

  • Natalie F.

I frequently eat here because I work at the AVEDA up the street and the service is always good and the people very friendly. I love love love the TMBs and the side salads!! I actually was in there today and I was having one of the worst days ever and I expressed this to the employee who was checking me out ever so slightly and he freakin gave me my side salad FOR FREE! Now How often will that happen in Bethesda or anywhere? It was so refreshing and seriously made me feel so much better. Nothing makes me feel better than when a human being practices random kindness:):):)

  • Fran B.

Chicken (or was it turkey) and Brie sandwich was tasty and most menu items were different than most offerings at other sandwich shops. Kettle chips were good as well. Workers were accommodating to the 4-5 parties that just happened to walk in about 10 minutes before closing. Glad I took a chance on a place I've never heard of.

This Cosi location seriously needs a facelift! You'd think with a prime spot in downtown Bethesda, it would be in better condition. On my recent visit, there were wet spots on a booth that appeared to be from a leaky ceiling. I moved to a table by the window and that gave me a view of the dirty coffee and soda stations. The food was... Edible. There wasn't anything about my turkey, bacon, and cheddar melt that made me go yum but there wasn't anything really wrong with it. It was a basic sandwich with basic ingredients. The sinus clearing spicy mustard they used helped. Also, the lemonade I ordered was more water than lemon. The staff was nice.

  • Katherine V.

Four stars for free wifi and decent food. One of the less pricey dining options in downtown Bethesda. Employees are pleasant. Tends to be kinda loud, although I do see people reading and eating alone with a laptop here. Go here for coffee and the warm food - melts, bowls. The salad and bagels - sorry, "squagels," are just OK.

    (4)
  • Carolyn C.

Nothing special here. Mediocre food at best with okay pricing. This establishment is just like any Panera, however, compared to Panera this place is better. Staff is always friendly but pushy! They don't give you enough time to look at the menu! I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at a Cosi, especially in downtown Bethesda.

    (2)
  • Susan M.

I just need to stop going to Cosi. My "Squagel Club" was disappointing - the eggs, cheese, and bacon were cold and the bagel was tough. Service at this location was on the slow side - the staff seemed more interested in socializing with each other than preparing orders.

  • Amanda M.

For what it is: a quick lunch place with soups, salads, sandwiches, Cosi is fine. Would never go out of my way to go to one but the soups hit the spot on cold rainy days and I do like their bread when it is warm. The pre-packaged salads are oftentimes over-dressed so wait in line and have them make one fresh for you so you can control the dressing.

I'll always remember this Cosi for late Friday night visits back in high school for coffee and s'mores, because honestly- what's better than s'mores? Anytime I'm in Bethesda this is a solid go-to for some decent joe and a quiet-ish space to plop down for a few and check email, or burn time until a movie. I don't think I've actually eaten anything here in years, so who knows if the food menu is still up to snuff as it was waaaaaaaaay back. tldr; free wifi and solid time-waster before your movie

Came here one day for lunch and it was pretty busy. I ordered the margherita flat bread pizza which was pretty good. The ordering system and line could be a little better it was very confusing. It seems like the ingredients were fresh and if you came in before the crowd you'd be ok. Good seating, great ambiance, good food.

  • Janet L.

With the other dining options around, it's easy for me to always skip Cosi. But the prices are reasonable here, the food is A-OK (and tastes like your average Cosi), and the staff is friendly. Located in a really great spot near the metro with street parking/garage parking/parking lot parking easily accessible.

Sandwiched (no pun intended) in between some very expensive restaurants, you will find an inexpensive alternative, Cosi. If you're trying to make it to your movie at Bethesda Row, or you simply want to grab a few snacks to sneak into your movie, Cosi is the best choice. Whether you're going to the movies or not, you will find fresh sandwiches made to order, and staff members who come around from behind the counter to walk you through the menu...nice touch for a sandwich joint.

I always love their freshly made juice here. I tried the pork belly banh mi and it was super oily and spicy. I would slow down with the jalapeño and red pepper paste. Also the pork belly needed to be prepared better and filter the oiliness out.

3.5 stars. In most respects, this is your standard Cosi. They serve bagels and breakfast foods, sandwiches (on their yummy flatbread), salads, soups, and their version of pizza, which is baked in their brick oven. They also, of course, have their famous s'mores and other desserts. This particular location also serves alcohol. There's plenty of seating, so you can sit and enjoy your meal with a glass of wine. My usual choice here is the signature salad, but I recently discovered the hearth-roasted veggie sandwich, which is very good. The prices are reasonable, it's convenient, and there are many healthy options.

I have been eating lunch regularly here and there are only two things on their entire menu that I like - but I like them a lot. The first is the hummus and veggie sandwich. They put a little too much hummus and onion on it but it's still good. The other must have item is the vanilla honey steamer. They need a new name for it. I can't stand calling it a steamer. I just call it a vanilla honey thingy. It's basically steamed milk with vanilla and honey and it tastes like snow ice cream (real snow with vanilla extract, milk and sugar - a favorite of mine as a kid). The problem is that if I'm at Cosi it's usually because I have a huge craving for some of that heavenly vanilla honey goodness and for the last three weeks, their milk frother/steamer has been broken. And prior to that at another Cosi, they were out of syrup. I would imagine that these larger chain stores would not have these kinds of issues if the management were more on top of things. The staff here is also a bit clueless. They make a lot of mistakes - wrong sizes, mixing up to go orders vs. dining in orders, making the wrong drink (Chai instead of Vanilla Honey), etc. I also miss the green olives...bring them back please! This particular location is cozier than most, with ample seating and would be a good place to get some work done.

Worst Cosi I've been to. I ordered the Chicken TBM on wheat no tomato. It's supposed to come with basil, mozzerlla, tomato and a sundried tomato spread. First complaint, apparently there is a TBM and a TBM Melt. This is definitely my problem, but I didn't see the non-melt, so I didn't order correctly and I thought Iwas getting melty cheese. Time for the real complaints. I ordered no tomato. Not no tomato and no spread. They also took 5 minutes before informing me that the wheat bread wasn't ready and would white be ok? Yes this happens, but don't let me stand there looking longingly behind the counter for sustenance for a while before presenting me with that option. There were hardly any people in there, so it's not like they were busy! Tasteless cold chicken sandwhich, I guess I'll eat you.

My favorite lunch place when I'm working and not dining with a client. I always get a signature salad.

I love this place! I recently went here for the first time with my boyfriend and I loved everything about it! I got the mango pomegranate lemonde which is very delicious! It was the perfect amount of sweet for me and it was very refreshing. For the meal, I got the chicken TBM (tomato, basil, mozzarella). I thought it was going to be a hot sandwhich, but it was actually a cold sandwhich. Still good, though. The meat tasted very fresh and clean, the bread was nice and crisp, not doughy at all, and the sauce was great. All in all, wonderful flavor. The portion size was perfect as well. You get a good amount for what you pay for, it's worth it to me. For dessert, we got the smores. It's such a cute little platter! They bring you a wooden platter with the chocolate, marshmallows, and crackers with some kind of burner in the middle. They light it for you, and you just do the rest yourself. It's a fun, whimsical way of eating, and it's good for sharing between two people. Cosi is officially one of my favorite sandwhich places. It reminds me of a WAY better panera bread. Much cleaner, fresher, and better taste. I love it! I will definitely be back! :)

In terms of coffee, Cosi has definitely gone downhill. Worst latte I have ever had, and the service was completely indifferent. Not sure that I'd even want to try the food at this location.

    (1)
  • Donald P.

I just realized Cosi could be a play on the word Cozy. I don't know if it actually was since someone just brought me a sandwich while I waited in line at movie theater that shall remain nameless. We got a chicken sandwich wrap and I must say it was pretty good. Seems like a great place to snack or have a meal while waiting for a movie next door.

  • Esther G.

I ordered a salad and was shocked and horrified at the small quantity, poor quality of wilted, rotted lettuce and fruit and one silver of what appeared to be canned chicken or something tasting that appealing. The price was extraordinary high. You are better off eating McDonalds or Burger King salad than this poor excuse for one. I will never make that mistake again.

    (1)
  • Alexander K.

When I grab something to go from here I opt for the Steak or Chicken TBM Melt. It's a filling sandwich and something good to eat before watching a movie next door. There is a separate counter for paying for carry-out items, and a server involved when you are "dining" inside which I don't feel is entirely appropriate for the type of establishment that this is. The items are simple and so quick to prepare that I don't feel that this is warranted. Also if you need to quench your thirst while walking by, there are plenty of drink options available.

  • Jill M.

It's affordable, freshly-prepared, can be reasonably healthy, and has free wi-fi, so I stop in here often for breakfast or lunch. I really enjoy the spinach artichoke breakfast egg wrap, tomato basil soup, and any of the salads. Some of the sandwiches are pretty creative and can be a nice break from the deli rut - especially the ones with chicken (tinga, TBM, tandoori etc.). I do have some criticisms of the place. First, they often appear slow or maybe understaffed when people are ordering and paying. Some disappointing items I've ordered: The bagel is actually a bready, square-shaped, sandwich roll with a hole in the middle (appropriately, they started calling them squagels instead of bagels, so no one mistakes it for a real bagel), the breakfast quiche is simply a scrambled egg topped with cheese in a pastry crust, and the pizza is their standard flatbread with melted cheese and toppings. These can be good options for breakfast/lunch; just keep your expectations in check and you'll be happy.

I've had better, I've had worse. I've eaten lunch here twice and had the buffalo blue sandwich and the cosi club. Both were decent but neither memorable. Either sandwich + a double brewed iced tea = about $10-11. Kinda expensive if you ask me. But on the grand scheme of things, it's a small price to pay when you just need to get away from the office/desk for awhile. (I usually come here because it's a slightly longer walk to/from here than my usual lunch spots.)

Mundane tomato basil soup, but fantastic humongous salads. Free wifi. This location only has 1 bathroom (that I know of).

  • Maria K.

The food is great! The whole production line of ordering, paying for your order, waiting for your order isn't so great... It's pretty unorganized. The waiting in line to order is not a big deal, but sometimes after they take your order they give you a ticket to take to the register and pay, and sometimes you wait there while they make the food in front of you. So it really becomes a cluster-F by the registers. Some people walk away with food while others wait awkwardly for their food to come, mostly in the way since there isn't a lot of room by the registers anyways. If they would just hand out numbers (or use the number system that is on the receipts) it might go smoother. So when you finally do get your food, you are quite flustered that you may/or may not have elbowed an older lady accidentally, pissed off the person working the register because you are taking his current customers 'space', and bumped the low table with the moms having lunch with their babies in strollers, spilling juice all over their freshly-purchased Luna outfits... Sigh... Definitely plan on sitting somewhere else to eat your food.

Had 2 breakfasts and a lunch here. It's right next to riverbed training so very convenient. Had an egg & sausage bagel. The bagel was hard in that when you bit down the innards was forced out the side. Flavor wasn't bad but I won't order again. Had an "everything" squargel and cream cheese. Had them toast. The flavor was great but they're stingy with the cream cheese. What little they put on came out the side. Next time ill order with butter. For lunch I had the TCB (?) sandwich. Chicken basil and motzarella - great taste and great value. I would order it again.

I shared the smores for two with a group of 3 (including me) and it was definitely the right amount. It was $7.79. It was a lot of fun to make!

What's the antonym for cozy? Sterile? Cold? Well, Trang N. is dead on: Cosi is NOT cozy! I've known cozy restaurants Cosi, and you are no cozy! (just a lame attempt at humor). The food itself is A-OK, but it is really cold and sterile. The tables are too close together, not in an intimate way. I finally moved an empty table against mine so the traffic flow would redirect itself away from me. No more bumping MY table! I had the TBM melt which was so much better hot compared to cold like I had at a previous Cosi. I had a hard time understanding the counter girl when I asked what the difference between the flatbread and the melt was. I was kind of expecting my melt to be open-faced. It was still good. $6.59 is about average for a sandwich, I guess. My friend's soup and salad was good, she said. The salad did look fresh. it's just that you'd expect more warmth from a place called Cosi. Fireplace? Comfy couches? Big ceramic mugs with steaming cappuccino? Not to be had here. Take a seat and try not to get bumped or head over to Starbucks further up Woodmont.

I have been to this place a couple times recently in the evening. Service was good. I had the hummus and veggie sandwich and loved it. I thought it was a comfortable place, good seating. I don't live in the area and was visiting, but was quite happy to have found this place for a simple, healthy, light meal.

If you live in a place that don't have cosi... you slowly notice yourself missing it and having withdrawals. I guess this place has a special place in my heart in the fact that when I moved to the greater DC area, I entered Cosi with new found friends on a blistering cold day baking smoores and drinking hot drinks. Then... years later with old friends, on a hot summer day drinking refreshing tea and smooties with melt in your mouth cheese melts. Needed a filling breakfast before before I study for my boards... One some days where I needed wifi, I come by... Need a quick bite to eat that is satisfying. Cosi. Need a place to sit and chat... Cosi. Some place where you feel like your eating healthy food... Cosi... Oh how i miss you cosi...

I loved their BBQ chicken pizza!!! It is delicious. Though parking at this location is difficult and sometimes there are groups of rowdy teenagers so it's not always the most relaxing environment. But the food is definitely delicious!

Hooray for Cosi! I was super hungry and on my way to a movie, Cosi was the only easy (re: quick and cheap) spot near the cinema but I was a bit cynical of being able to eat there. With my Soy allergy I tend to not be able to eat sandwiches at most places. Bread almost ALWAYS has some kind of soy additive, be it the oil or the lecithin, but their bread is made on site and from scratch--and it is soy free and delicious! Of course, most of the sandwiches were still out of my reach--essentially all sauces and marinades have some kind of soy additive as well--but the manager pulled a notebook out from the back for me that listed all the allergens in every menu item! So we went through the book together and found out which sandwiches I could have (it came down to the hummus and the veggie ones, ah well) and I was able to eat an actual sandwich on some delicious bread! Funny how very satisfying something as simple as bread can be when you are generally denied having it....I was in ecstasy eating that tasty morsel! Very good, very crusty, hearty bread. yum yum yum!!! I appreciated the kindness and patience of the staff, the recent addition of the allergen ingredient notebook, and the fresh ingredients!! I will definitely be back! I want to try more, but I am saddened by the fact that so many of the sandwiches I want are off limits to me....but beggars (or allergen sufferers in this case) can't be choosers!

I don't care what you people say - I love Cosi. There's virtually no other place in Bethesda that I can get free wi-fi, a satisfying meal, decent coffee and a beer while I study. The best part is that I've never once felt rush out.

Quick update on this - I contacted customer service and received a snarky, excuse-laden reply from the district manager. I sent an email to their CEO to escalate further, no response. No wonder they're losing money hand-over-fist. They don't understand even the simplest basics about customer service. Just reinforced my view - I'll never, ever go back to Cosi anywhere again, and I'll tell everyone who is ever willing to listen what a poor excuse for a service-oriented business this is. Only a matter of time before Chapter 7 visits these folks.

The only reason why I didn't give this place one star is because the food was pretty good. I had the Chicken BMT (basil, mazarella, tomato) and I usually add avacado to my sandwiches. I also got the mango smoothie. The sandwich was good and the smoothie was okay, but the service sucks a fat one! The dude behind the register didn't acknowledge me standing there at the register for at least 5 minutes! I was just about to say f*** it and go somewhere else and then this other girl was at the register doing something and then looked up at me and was like, "Has your order been taken?" I said, no. So she took my order. 15+ minutes later I got my food to go. As I was sitting waiting for my sandwich and smoothie I noticed a couple with their daughter come in and were told to wait for a table. I guess they waited a little too long, because they left before receiving anymore service. When one of the waitresses saw that they left without being served, she acted as if it was no big deal and that it was just one less customer to serve. I won't go back here because the service is slack and the restaurant smells a little like old dish/mop water. There are too many other places nearby to eat than to have to be ignored in this place.
