The baked goods here are absolutely delicious. I work nearby and that's both a blessing and a curse because I could seriously eat here every day! I'm deducting a star because service is often veryyyy slow, they don't have jelly for toasted bagels, and they only sell cronuts on Fridays and not before holiday weekends.

Came here and got one of their croissants and a couple of their donuts. The croissant was pretty disappointing -- not crispy on the outside, and tasted a bit too buttery. The regular donut tasted fine, but glaze aside, the dough was sort of dense without too much flavor. The seating inside was also very limited -- there's one table with two long benches that seats around 6. The arrangement makes it difficult for two parties to sit at the table at once, and definitely not three parties. Service was fine.

One of those small shops I've passed 200 times and have been meaning to go into each time I've passed. Freshly baked breads line the walls. I quickly bust out my Yelp app to see if there is anything particularly popular... a few reviews mention "pumpernickel" a few reviews mention "baked goods." That's not that much help. I came in for a cup of coffee, but then I saw that they had bagels as well! And then I was like... I want bagels. So I took a few home, had one this morning, it was quite delicious (Could be a little bit chewier and doughier in the middle), but absolutely a respectable bagel none the less. Then I saw the dark steed look me right in the eyes. "Just remember, if you look in the face of evil, evil's gonna look right back at you." Yes, I'm talking about the cronut. The infamous crossaint donut that I've heard people waiting in endless lines for in D.C. Thank g-d they didn't have the calorie count on this tempting seductress, with its shiny glazed filled, and layered soft outside. I agreed to have it with a friend. She said that she was only going to have 2 bites... but she ended up having 5... cause it was that good. The pastries looked on point. The breads looked so perfect they almost looked as if made from plastic. The coffee was excellent and they have this little benched table inside where we quickly struck up conversation with woman who was taking a break from holiday shopping as well. Can't wait to go back.

I had heard that Bethesda Magazine had named Breads Unlimited (BU) the 2015 Editors' Pick for Best Chocolate Chip Cookie. I have driven past BU a few million times and I had never thought to turn into the nondescript strip mall. But today, I went in search of the famous chocolate chip cookie. I will say - Bethesda Magazine doesn't lie. I don't know if I'll say very best -- though I think I'd go as far to say it's among the very best in metro DC (This isn't quite as good as the top of the heap, like Levain in NYC). When I arrived today, the chocolate chip cookies were still warm and gooey, and when one broke in half in my bag, the woman behind the counter threw in another for free (thank you). Even a few hours later, when that ooey gooey warmth had worn off, these were still absolutely decadent.

I am involved in a serious love affair with Breads Unlimited. This mom and pop style bakery is a staple in downtown Bethesda. Their homemade chicken salad on freshly made pumpernickel will be the highlight of anyone's day. Not to mention their hamentashen are to die for (especially the apricot kind...they are worth the trip here alone). I am anxious to try a wider variety of their pastries- they always look so delicious in the case!

We went in the middle of Sunday afternoon and many items were sold out (hot dogs in a blanket, braided challah, etc.). However, the ones we did take home -- apricot cookies, rugelach, sliced challah loaf -- were fantastic. The cookies were light and airy with lots of fruity notes. While I'm not typically a jam cookie person, these ones had me wishing there were more. The owner(?) lady with whom we chatted at length was sooo very nice. The bakery has been around for over 30 years and it's a gem. We'll be back, hopefully earlier than mid-afternoon, so fewer things would be sold out!

I've been going to Breads Unlimited for years now. It's a great place to get a loaf of bread and the baked goods are yummy (especially the maple walnut danish), but there is little to no consistency in their assortment. Sometimes they have everything you could want and other times, their display is basically empty. The service is just as variable. And don't stop in if you need to get somewhere- service is never fast.

I have been buying at Breads Unlimited for years now, more their breads than anything else, but occasionally other things. Their Russian pumpernickel is easily the best I have ever had; it is so popular than you often have to arrive early or they run out. I also highly commend their ryes, multi-grain, and pumpernickel raisin. Like other reviewers, I am happy to buy from their day-old shelf because their bread LASTS very well (at least when kept refrigerated and bought unsliced; I am not a fan of machine-sliced bread). I never buy their bagels fresh but they are a good deal day-old (not that they rival Georgetown Bagelry in quality). Sometimes I have had their pastry, cookies or rolls as well; I have never bought a bad product there. We live in the District but I play weekend soccer in North Bethesda so it became convenient to stop by on the way home. But their bread is so fine that even when I am out injured, or when the fields are unplayable, I will drive up to Bethesda to pick up my weekly allotment of bread. Or I may stop off on the way UP to soccer to be sure there is Russian pumpernickel left One tiny gripe (not their fault): it is a real pain that left turns out of the parking lot are not allowed. I assume this is a deal the shopping center owner made with the neighborhood.....

I came here for the first time and saw the sandwich menu and decided to order one. It took them about 30 minutes to locate all the ingredients and make the sandwich and they were out of some of the ingredients (like avocado, which was very disappointing, as I love avocado). They had several employees on staff, all of whom were very nice, but they all looked a little confused (maybe they had new employees training?). They said they had only been offering sandwiches for a few weeks, but it seemed like this was the first time someone had actually ordered one. My pastrami bagel sandwich was quite tasty, but $8 is a bit steep for a bagel sandwich that doesn't come with a pickle, chips, and a drink (which is what most places would offer for that price point). Not sure if I'll be back.

Bakery goods are tasty.. I got the impression that customers come requesting small orders cause when I ordered 8 pieces they kept looking for a box to place my donuts in and end up piling everything on top of each other in a small box, the box would not close! And the lady looked at me all cluless.. so I would recommend to bring a container if you are planning to order more than four.

Donuts lost some consistency. Sometimes great, sometimes heavy and greasy. You can tell by looking, so if they look normal, give it a shot, they can be great.

I love breads unlimited. Great little spot, lots of pastries/cookies/treats/breads to choose from. They also have a selection of day old breads to buy which are okay. I've gotten a good batch and another batch where the bread was definitely more than just a day old but whatever. Their iced coffee is so good and usually my main reason for coming here.

How is this for ridiculous? I just called to order a birthday cake for Friday (today is Tuesday) and they said... no can do. We won't have a baker on staff until Saturday! Seriously? A bakery without a baker? This is nothing but a reseller of baked goods. Time to rethink your business plan!

This place opens up early and is a decent place to go if you're looking for breakfast in the Bethesda area. I will preface this review by saying that there are better places for breakfast nearby. From what I've tried here, two things jump out at me: while everything is very fresh, the taste is slightly above average; and (like most things in Bethesda) most everything is over-priced. I have tried the cheese danish, cherry danish, and salmon/red onion/cream cheese on a bagel. The salmon bagel was an outrageous $6 (to think that this is .50 cheaper than a Chipotle burrito really puts things in perspective). A cup of house coffee is about $1.50. I have heard from other customers that the bread, cookies, and other baked good are really good, which I can neither confirm nor deny. The Yelp rating system puts it all in perspective. In sum, it's A-OK.

This place is pretty good. I went about 2PM and there wasn't much left in the dougnut department, but I suppose that makes sense considering how late it was. I got the apple fritter and chocolate iced doughnut--they were pretty darn good. I guess I'm holding back on the stars because I wish there was more selection!

This place might be better for it's breads than for the sweet goods. I got a chocolate croissant, a cream cheese croissant, and a loaf of Russian Pumpernickel. The croissants were hard to finish. I bought them around 11am on a Sunday morning, so I thought they'd be fresh but they were tough and lacked the buttery softness of a good croissant. The Russian pumpernickel was pretty good, although the flavors were incredibly strong. The bread was soft and luckily the loaf was pretty cheap. I wouldn't get it again, but if you like a strong pumpernickel, this might be the place for you.

I find the bakery items very good but often find the staff inattentive and rude. There seems to be a real attitude here.

The Cinnamon buns are wonderful, but very hard to come by. I learned after two visits they didn't make them for Lent. After Easter, I went early on a Sunday, and was told they are only made on Friday and Saturday. Yesterday, my friend went to pick them up early on a Saturday, only to be told, sorry, we made them yesterday. I'm not sure what kind of business plan this is, leaving customers frustrated after 4 visits, and giving them misinformation, but they sure are good! As another reviewer noted, the staff could be more helpful. No one has noticed my quest and said "we'll take your order." But I will keep trying . . . . I keep at it, Friday 9/20/13. No cinnamon buns today, just like two Fridays ago. Last time they made up for it on Saturday, so I will try again tomorrow. One must be very patient to patronize this bakery. They bake what they want to bake when they want to bake it. Follow a menu? Nope.

The Challah is just ok. It looks good but it just misses with not having the slight sweetness that good challahs have. The muffins and the chocolate coffee ring are consistently good. Most of the other baked goods seems tasteless.

I just wanted to give a shout to all the yelp reviewers that recommended this place. I recently purchased a plain yellow cake with chocolate frosting for my mother's birthday. The cake was soooo freakin moist, my family just raved about the cake for days. The cake served about 15 people and the costs was about $30 and change. If you need a cake, this is the place to go!

This place is one of Bethesda's hidden treasures. If you like bread, you'll love the artisinal loaves here that are baked in the back. Put you'll really flip for the delicious muffins and other sweets here. They have good coffee here too. The seating is sparse--just one communal table inside and a little seating outside in the warm months--but the food is so good that I won't deduct a star for that.

I love this place! I think everything I have gotten from this bakery has been great. Their challah is not dried out and it is delicious. It seems to be more on the egg-y side which I like. The babka they have is delicious (especially the chocolate one). They don't have it all the time but I think they usually do for the weekend. Their cookies are really good too. I like the almond cookie (although it is rather sweet) and the macadamia nut cookie, but their other more normal cookies (like gingerbread men) are just as good. The hamentaschen are the best I've ever had. I absolutely love the poppy seed one. If you go late in the day, they usually have sales on their bread and/or cookies. One time I got a bag of about 8 little cookies and some mini pecan pie slices for only a dollar, and of course they were really yummy. You can reserve items and make special orders. Another great feature about this place is that most of the food they have is not made with milk (besides one little section) which I know is a good thing for a lot of people. I'm amazed that all of the foods I mentioned are dairy free and still taste so good. Definitely check this place out!

People tend to not know about this place. It's sort of hard to pick out. But it's amazing! They have good prices, the cupcakes are only $1.75, and not like $3.50, ahem ahem fancy cakes by Leslie. All the pastries are great- I love love LOVE the ginger bread men there, they are so cute I feel bad eating them! I go there for a snack a lot. The people are nice too. The only thing is there isn't much a place to sit down. There is one large table with 4 chairs, I think they have a little seating outside though, just a couple tables. The sweets are so good I finish before I can even sit down anyway, so that's not really a problem for me:)

I ordered a big batch of birthday cupcakes from here and was very happy with them. Big, beautiful, perfectly frosted (not too thick nor overly sweet), moist cake. Both vanilla and chocolate were excellent. Thanks!!

Hate to share this with others, but this little bakery deserves it. Good bread, go Saturdays around 3 if you want the harder to find stuff. Add a star if you like doughnuts, they have their own machine, and they are just terrific -- not Dunkin Donuts-y artificial, and not Krispy Kreme-y cardiac arrest -- with awesome toppings (try the chocolate frosted, best quality chocolate frosting I've ever tasted on a doughnut).

Got a box of cookies just before Xmas: contained a variety of sugar cookies in holiday shapes (candy canes, stars with smiling faces) and a few gingerbread men too. It was both delicious and cute. And, as I was leaving the store, the whole parking lot smelled like gingerbread- A big improvement to the atmosphere.

Really liked this place :) // The owner and the staff were so sweet to us when we happened to pop in for a sandwich.

A place that sells a below ordinary quality of bakery products, in my opinion, that taste like sponge cake (which I hate). I found nothing special at Breads Unlimited, even though some items look appealing.
