Guri guri huh? Sounds pretty cute. For a hot sunny day, that's what I needed. Around $2 something I got a mini cup size guri guri. It tasted like the Samurai ice cakes except it's more creamy and soft. I think only one choice flavors. Not bad for a dessert. I tried it! Checked!

I saw this store in my guidebook so I yelped and saw all these great reviews and just had to go. They only have two flavors: strawberry and pineapple. Two small scoops for $1.20 cash only. It is kind of between sherbet and ice cream. The strawberry tasted very artificial. The pineapple tasted more like mango to me. They are refreshing and very reasonably priced. I also like their smallness because I can actually finish my ice cream. I would go back for next time.

Whenever you visit Maui, this is probably one of the must stops when going there. Basically the Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is known for their infamous Guri Guri, which typically equivalent to Samurai's (for you 'Aiea/Central/Leeward peeps out there). They have three sizes, small, medium, and large all ranging from two to five scoops with a choice of just two flavors either strawberry or mango or you could get both. The guri guri is da bomb though and it is definitely worth the trip and effort to go there and maybe stand in line depending on what time and day you go to. My recent trip to Maui, my crew and I went there two times and it wasn't so bad. Guri guri is most definitely da bomb though on a hot and sunny Maui day. It is conveniently located in a shopping plaza in Maui which I don't know but I should know so shame on me for not knowing being that I am an Elite Yelper hahahaha. Anyways, The guri guri shop is not only known for the guri guri, they also have local kine snacks too like candies and stuff. However, going back to the guri guri, you can actually take the guri guri on the plane to go back home but you have to get it like one to two hours right before you fly. You can get like a bucket or pints of the guri guri so that is pretty cool that they give you that option. Anyways, we liked the guri guri so much that we made our own theme song to it guri guri.... guri guri!

I'm still not sure if it's ice cream or sorbet or ice (maybe a combination) but I do know it's very, very good. All of us enjoyed the Strawberry flavor much more than the pineapple. The pineapple almost had a peach flavor to it. The portions are small but it cost $1.20. Get a large or get two! If this existed in New York I would be a customer everyday. If you are in the area do yourself a favor and try it. But be careful-I have a feeling some of those magical ingredients are addicting!

Tried this place out when we visited Maui in the beginning of this year. They have their usual two flavors, strawberry and pineapple. It was only $1.20 for two scoops. We both got each flavor and oh my goodness it was SO CREAMY, NICELY SWEETENED, AND COOLING. The texture of it is different from the usual cold treats. I know it's not shave ice or ice cream but it's probably between those two. SO DELICIOUS! You can't go wrong with the price. I'm from Oahu but if you're ever visiting Maui, this is a must!

Tasaka is a legendary spot in Maui. My wife grew up loving it and took me there. Basically sherbert....but maybe a little softer texture. Pineapple and Strawberry. Definitely has a almost artificial taste to it, but I have to say that I sincerely sincerely enjoyed it. 5 scoops for $3....5 scoops is like a medium cup, not huge. Will definitely be back, it's a staple in the Maui rotation.

Note: Unlike many other reviews for Guri Guri, this review is not influenced by nostalgia. Instead, it is perhaps influenced by the heightened expectations of one surrounded by individuals themselves raving about their childhood experiences. Calibrate your own expectations accordingly. So, with that out of the way, let's move on to the main event: this was the most disappointing frozen dessert treat that I have ever experienced. Yes, I allowed people to get my expectations up. Yes, I realize that for the price, it may not be truly terrible. However, the thing left an awful taste in my mouth (that's about 75% figurative; the actual flavor wasn't so much awful as entirely flavorless). My first warning of what was to come arrived when I saw the color of the "sherbert" or "sorbet" or "ice cream" or whatever the hell they're calling this stuff. Though described as pineapple and strawberry flavors, the respective colors did not come close to matching what one imagines when one thinks of pineapples and strawberries. At that point, I accepted that rather than "natural"-type fruit flavors, it would be a syrupy-sweet affair. No. No. No. The allegedly pineapple, ice cream-like substance was incredibly, indescribably bland. It did not taste like pineapple, not even a little bit. It did not taste like artificial pineapple candy, either. It was hardly even sweet! It certainly was not tart. Really, I'm at a loss here. The closest I can come in describing this is "nega-flavor." Think cardboard mixed and blended with 2% milk and just a tiny pinch of sugar, then add... something. Certainly not fruit, or fruit-inspired flavors. Something that looks just a bit powdery; something that is 99% color and maybe 1% flavor. The strawberry version is slightly, slightly better. And no, I'm not some ice cream/sorbet/gelato snob or something! I am completely fine with the cheap stuff from the grocery store; I am also fine with richer, creamier, higher-end ice creams, too. I love popsicles. I love shave ice. I try to keep a tub of ice cream in the freezer at all times, and I mix things up. And yet, I've honestly purchased superior ice cream from illicit cart vendors with blatantly bootlegged products. It is that bad. It isn't "tasty." It is barely palatable. It beats out sucking on an ice cube, but only if that ice cube didn't come out of a flavored drink. Otherwise, I'd take the damn cube. I suppose it was somewhat creamy. And cold. So if you don't care a lick about flavor, Guri Guri is where it's at. Seriously, I almost never post on Yelp, and this stuff was bad enough to inspire me to come post this. This sort of mediocrity is difficult to come by; don't be fooled by the 500 people talking about their childhood experiences and "oh the flavor itself is whatever but eh, 5 stars." Readers, you've been warned.

Guri Guri ice cream!! OG great and simple...... this place reminds of that old "Saturday Night Live" skit with Steve Martin and Dan Akroyd as mall barbers with no business. They can't understand how the masking tape store next door (with only 2 items) is soooo busy .... selling only large and small size tape!! Just like the masking tape store this place only has 2 flavors ....pineapple and strawberry !!! Don't be expecting some gourmet delicacy from "Top Chef Masters' as this is just down home comfort ice cream/sherbert goodness. 2 scoops $1.20 .... really thats the price LOL !! Served in what is basically a dixie cup .... this place has not changed in decades. I do not think the sign , nor the decor has ever changed. Some things need to change with the times.... others have the world change around them . Everyone remembers some local comfort food they craved as a youngster .... Tommy burgers, Pink's hot dogs, Ivar's fish and chips, Zippy's chili, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and of course Mc Donalds french fries!! Guri Guri is a Maui landmark for over 40 years .....it's unique flavor and "hole in the wall" character make it a classic. I hope they will never change......

On Maui only. The best guri guri. It's like a sorbet, but totally different. Love this place. It is a must stop by and try.

Came to Tasaka on the way to the Maui airport. It's located in a strip mall kind of setting and tucked away in the back. The interior of the shop isn't fancy or anything like that. But the ice cream/sherbet was soooooo delicious. It tasted like creamy shaved ice. They only had pineapple and strawberry that day, but the flavors were so good!! I love Tasaka and can't wait to go back for more!

Recently came here with my boyfriend on our Maui trip. It was exactly how I remembered it as a little girl. Memories of coming to Maui and eating guri guri. So soft, creamy and flavorful. It was my boyfriends first time having it also and he really enjoyed it! Excellent service with warm welcoming smile once you walking in and cheap! Cash only btw!!!

From the reviews this place would blow your mind you would think, but it is massively over hyped. The two scoops ( there were only two flavors available, which on it's own for an ice cream shop is a joke) strawberry and pineapple. The kicker was that we were served it in a Dixie cup. We thought it was the sampler and were waiting for the real ice cream lol. May be a nostalgic thing for locals but, mainlanders this is not a must by any means to visit. The lady behind the counter was nice.

Always a place I need to visit when I'm coming to visit my hometown, no other place in the world have this, and that's what makes this place unique!! It's very affordable and the quality is amazing, thanks to all that help this local place, I always love to give back. Too bad I can't bring it to the mainland so I can share with friends!!!

My mother is from Maui. She used to fly us up there every summer to visit my grandmother. That's a lot of summers. And every time we went to Maui, we made at least one stop at Tasaka's. Sometimes we made multiple trips just because my grandmother knew how much I loved guri guri. To this day, I always order the same thing: three scoops of strawberry. The flavor hasn't changed since the old school days and I'm grateful for that. I intend to return to Tasaka for as long as physically possible. I really enjoy the nostalgia of this place.

Words can't really describe what guri guri is. Is it ice cream? Is it soft serve? Is it yogurt? I'm not sure. It's simply guri guri. During my first/recent trip to Maui, this was a must! And it is for anyone visiting! I came here 3 times during my stay. It was a perfect and light dessert after a meal or a day hiking or at the beach. There are options for one, two, three, four and five scoops. They also have to-go servings that are flash frozen. Perfect for short-term/interisland travel. There flavors come in strawberry and pineapple. I personally enjoyed the pineapple flavor but both are just delightful. CASH ONLY! Parking is not a problem at all. There was ample spots in the shopping center lot.

Five stars. Got get get it! The original guri guri. No can beat this one! One visits Maui, one shall come here to eat this. Nostalgic? Yes, for da local folks. Ono? Yes, for all! It's just the best. Hard to explain in words. Highly recommended.

when i got to Maui, all i heard from everyone is Guri-Guri! I didn't even know what it was!lol heard about it and HAD to try it......100x better than Samurai! it was soooooo delicious... our first visit, i got 2 scoops strawberry only, the pineapple didnt sound appealing to me... we ordered 8 quarts to take back home to Oahu! Its so awesome that they do that! we picked up at 11am and landed at 12:45, unpacked it at around 1:30 (exactly 2.5 hours) for my kids and it was still frozen, juice leaking a bit out of the carton but it was sealed in a foil like wrap, then in newspaper and then wrapped in that leak proof paper that your meats are wrapped in and tied tight. anywho, they said that it was pre-packed with a mixture of strawberry and pineapple...also got two scoops for the road and decided to try the pineapple, omg, that one was delicious, may now say its my favorite over strawberry? lol definitely worth it, super delicious!! a must try!!!!!!!!!! now i'll be craving this, good thing i got a stash in my freezer..........

It's been a few years since last visiting guri guri here @ Tasaka's when I thought it was the greatest thing ever. What is Guri guri? To best describe it, Guri guri is basically a combination of ice cream & shaved ice blended into one. It's ice cream in terms of the texture but it dissolves quickly in your mouth like shave ice. The portions are small, I ordered the 5 scoops but the serving scoops are so small, it really amounts to two scoops. Did the 50/50 (Pineapple & strawberry) Is it good? Yeah but as with most places it isn't as good as the first time, but shave ice is my first choice when going to Hawaii. It's worth checking out

  • Janice T.

Yummy guriguri...loved both flavors strawberry and pineapple...so worth it. I wish they could send some of this happiness to Oahu. The location wasn't hard to find and lots of parking. I didn't have to wait very long till I was able eat my happiness. Will make sure to visit every time we are on Maui.

Just as good as I remember. The folks there are very nice, the goodie goodie (as we called it when I was a kid) is ONO and they are NOT closed on Sunday! So all those folks going home after a weekend in Maui, you CAN take some home for the family!

My foodie friend gave me a heads up on this so I made a mental note once more. We dropped by after a visit to IAO Valley state park monument. $1.20 buys you two small scoops of sherbet. We got one each of strawberry and pineapple. The ice cream jerk scooped it in nano seconds. I suggested to my family that she would be a great guest on David Lettermen show. I was reaching for my money when I looked up and it was already scooped in a blink of an eye! And rounded scoops at that. Very refreshing.

Guri guri. My friend recommended the shop when I told her I was going to Maui. She said it was her childhood favorite. She said it's like an ice cream/sherbet dessert. I could tell it was her childhood favorite. The strawberry flavor tasted more bubblegum than strawberry, and It was definitely not what I was expecting. I loved the pineapple though. I think I would rather get two scoops of pineapple next time. The guri guri itself was creamier than I expected. Probably because it's like a mixture of fruit juice and condensed milk. That being said, I had no point of reference when I came here, just that I "had to try the goody-goody," which, according to my friend is what it was originally called. The shop is so small and unassuming in this outdoor mall. The ice cream jerk scooped our sherbets in a blink of an eye. It was actually pretty cool. For the price, it's not bad at all. I'll definitely make a stop when I come back around, especially because it's so close to the airport!

Headed to yelp.com/user_local_phot… To try... yelp.com/user_local_phot… My friend really wanted to have a little snack here... as guri guri is one of those "you must haves" when visiting Maui. The BF and I got a mixture of strawberry and pineapple (3 scoops each) which turned out to be waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much for us. 2 scoops $1.20 3 scoops $1.80 The texture is... different. Kinda like a sherbet but a little heavier... or a cross between a light ice cream and a thicker sherbet. It was okay. The strawberry was definitely better than the pineapple (in our opinion)

My favorite place to go while on Maui is the Tasaka Guri Guri Shop! Whenever I get off the plane, I go straight to this shop for my fill of Guri Guri Ice Cream! This store has been in business for over 40 years and the secret recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. I was told that 'Guri Guri' (goo-rhee goo-rhee) is the Japanese way of saying 'Goodie Goodie' or 'Good Good'. Indeed their ice cream is Guri Guri. There are two flavors of ice cream - Strawberry and Pineapple. They serve little disposable cups that hold 2, 3, 4, & 5 scoops. They also prepack 1-quart ice cream for inter-island travel (lasts 2 hours without freezing, due to the deep freeze). At the top of the list to order is the Strawberry Guri Guri. The recipe seems unchanged for 30+ years. The ice cream has a (Malolo syrup style) strawberry shaved ice flavor combined with a nice cream, making a super delicious and refreshing ice cream (with a sorbet kind of texture). My guess is that 85%+ of the patrons order the Strawberry only because it is a childhood memory and a treat. The store also serves Pineapple Guri Guri. This ice cream also has a sorbet texture, and taste like fresh island pineapple and cream. As a kid, I wasn't fan of the flavor. But, I tasted it on this trip two times and it was refreshingly good! I like how the pineapple doesn't have an acid taste to it (like pineapple juice). Tasty and a flavor of the islands. In the old days, this ice cream used to be served with Azuki Beans (Japanese red bean paste). But, the store no longer serves this. It's fun to see little kids and old tutu-wahine and tutu-kane (grandma and grandpas) come to Tasaka's for a quick, reasonable, and cheap ice cream treat!

This is always one of our first stops when on Maui. It is such a Maui icon and has been around for over 50 years. If you ever visit Maui it is a must eat!

  • Clara L.

what the HECK? i had a bite two bites three bites four bites five, six, seven, eight (we got like 3 scoops or something) and i still don't get it it's ridiculously chemically and fake tasting i can't even tell what flavors they're trying to emulate maybe it's because i didn't grow up eating it but i'm definitely not a fan

    (1)
  • Mimi C.

This stuff grows on you after several bites. Their ice cream texture is a blend of gelato and full on ice cream. It's smooth, but fluffy. Can't really pin it down. They come in 2 flavors only - pineapple and strawberry. Opt for the 2 scoop *$1.20* and get a sampling of both. While we loved the texture, I wasn't too keen on the taste which tasted pretty artificial to me. However, this is a nice quick stop if you're just coming off from the airport. =)

Loved it when from when I was little and still do. Always have to get some when I come back to visit!!!!

A local Maui staple for YEARS that hasn't changed much over time. Still the same shop from my childhood days, still just two flavors of strawberry & pineapple (really, that's all they need!), & they still only accepts CASH. It's the only location in Hawaii & still owned by the same family as far as I know. Us Maui folks love it as every bite brings back a lot of childhood nostalgia! Guri guri isn't quite ice cream or sherbert, but a mix of both. It may not be mind-blowingly delicious for the adventurous foodie, but it's simple, refreshing, & cheap ($1.20 for 2 scoops, $1.80 for 3 scoops). You can also buy a pint of each flavor (~$6) & just ask for extra wooden spoons if you're with a group. They ask how far you will be taking it so that they can provide you a batch that can reach your destination without melting into a watery mess. They're also available to be packaged & taken to neighbor islands. No seating inside, but there's ample seating throughout the mall. Enjoy!

only two flavors offered: strawberry and pineapple ... I personally loved the pineapple. quick service and fantastic for a scorching hot day!!!

My boyfriend always mentioned about guriguri everytime someone mentions Maui and for the many times I've been visiting I've never tried guriguri, not until our recent mini vacay. First day we went to stop by Tasaka for some guriguri. I ordered two scoops because I'm not a big fan of sweets, but man I was hooked. We went back for more. My siblings also went and had the same experience and kept going back for more. Every single day we were there we went to get guriguri. So refreshingly good and you can't beat the price. I will make sure to go Tasakas next time we're in Maui.

My BF and I were on Maui the week before Christmas and the one place we wanted to go to was closed until our last day there! We did make it down to Tasaka Guri Guri before heading down to the airport and this was a cute little shop that is in a little mall. When we got there, there was only a couple of people there - but there was a steady stream of people coming and going. A lot of families with kids - you know they always want a snack! Service was good and fast - we both got the mixed flavors of strawberry and pineapple which was nice and refreshing. You must stop by to get some guri guri!!

Our weekend trip Maui has turned into one long food fest. And what food fest would be complete without a little guri guri ice cream? Creamy , cold and fabulous . The shop is a little old school. No inside seating , but lots of benches outside to sit and enjoy the yummy goodness.

  • Dean L.

5 stars for cheap, fast, friendly sherbet in strawberry or pineapple. Paper cup and balsa wood spoon means no plastic! Get a scoop of each flavor for $2.20. Mmmmm

  • Joel M.

Just 2 flavors, and yet all the great reviews? Had to try it. Wow, was it ever good. So flavorful. The secret recipe is only known by 2 individuals supposedly. Good enough to go back for sure.

Minimalistic. Simple. Easy. Fast. Colorful. Reasonable. Sweet. Cold. Refreshing. Cheap. Cheap. Decent. Good. Tangy. Uplifting. Treat. Small. Smooth. Tasty. Convenient. Batman.

I wish they would bring guri guri to Oahu! They use to have a place that sold it awhile back (@I Can't Believe it's Not Yogurt) but they closed down :\ Now I have to go all the way to Maui just to get it. First time trying the pineapple flavor. Strawberry is definitely the go-to. You can get multiple small scoops for cheap. Definitely a must try if you're on Maui. Takes me back to the hanabuttah days!

  • Jeff C.

I was taken here several years ago by some relatives who were locals, so I had to bring my wife when we were here on our trip! It's a small little store in a strip mall next to a Longs. Easy to overlook, but you don't want to miss it! Guri guri is not quite sherbert, sorbet, or ice cream. They only have two flavors (strawberry and pineapple) and you get two scoops in a paper cup for only $1.20! On a warm day, heck, any day, a cup of chilled fruity goodness hits the spot. I do have to say that the strawberry didn't taste too much like strawberry. My wife thinks it tastes like medicine. We both preferred the pineapple and would go for two scoops of that the next time we're here!

  • kevin m.

It is a MUST stop anytime I am in Maui cool inexpensive treat that makes you want to run back in for more and you can casually walk around the mall while you enjoy your cool snack and plenty of parking !!!!

    (5)

It's basically cheap frozen sugar. I wouldn't run to get more, but I also wouldn't turn some down on a hot day.

Ever since I was a child, I have always enjoyed Guri Guri. This little hole-in-the wall is not any old ice cream or snack shop. Sure, you can grab a drink, if you are craving some caffeine or some won ton chips, if you have the munchies. But the draw to this shop is their ice cold Guri Guri. You can buy it by the scoop (up to 5, served in a Dixie cup) or by the quart. For those who do not know what Guri Guri is: it is like a cross between ice cream and sorbet. Think Hawaiian gelato, or something along those lines. There are two flavors: strawberry or pineapple. I suggest going with both. My favorite combo is: 3 strawberry, 2 pineapple (alternating flavors). If you decide to take this little treat home, be forewarned: Guri Guri does NOT travel well. You will need a cooler full of ice/dry ice/ice packs that seals well to tote it to your destination. The furthest recommended trip for carrying Guri Guri in a cooler is 2-3 hours. So, you may be able to get it as far as O'ahu or the Big Island, if you pick it up and go straight to the airport. Otherwise, you may just want to tank the whole batch while you wait for your plane. As for service, the woman who runs the shop has been there for YEARS. She is always very nice and speedy with orders (which is VERY helpful, especially in the summer). Do not come here expecting a place like Baskin Robbins or Yogurtland. Space is quite limited at this storefront, and it is a much more simple, straight forward experience. So, you basically walk in, grab your order and take it to go. As for the authentic Maui experience, this is as good as it gets!

  • Phuong K.

Prior to my trip to Maui, my friend who was from Hawaii told me I had to make a stop here and get the ice cream so I made sure I stopped by here. They only offer two flavors here also. I came during the afternoon with my family and there was a line out the door, but it moved very fast. I got two scoops mixed. It wasn't a very large size and not too small for me...it was perfect! I devoured it and I bought a pint of pineapple and a pint of strawberry too. The ice cream melts pretty fast so good thing I devoured it. Out of the two flavors I liked the pineapple one more. The strawberry had an interesting flavor that kind of tasted like bubble gum to me, but it was pretty good. But i loved loved loved the pineapple. For sure this is a place worth checking out if you are in Maui. I am craving this as we speak. Its cheap and yummy.

    (4)
  • Eric M.

OMG, had been so long since I had any Guri Guri. AS other reviewers mention, really wish I could get some on Oahu. Small store, barely even room to stand in line but the line moves very quickly. Guri Guri sold by the (small) scoop in a cup. The best description of Guri Guri I can think of is what an awesome creamsicle would taste like. They also offer pre-packed quarts that can make it to Oahu if you pick it up from them 90 minutes prior to your flight. Probably have to check it, though, since carrying on risks confiscation by TSA.

  • Marti L.

Guri guri is a highly acclaimed treat, and as far as I know, only available in Maui. Many people describe the dessert as a hybrid of ice cream and sorbet because it has an ice cream appearance but an icy texture. It's easy to see why Tasaka is so popular: -homemade guri guri (strawberry or pineapple) -affordable (2 scoops - $1.10, 3 scoops - $1.65) -fast service (no lines) -to-go pints (packaged in a sealed box) The 3 stars is more of a personal preference. The overwhelming sweetness of the strawberry one caught us off guard. It had an artificial taste to it which we didn't enjoy. The pineapple was better. We were also disappointed by how fast they melted. We bought 2 cups to enjoy on our drive. But they were already half melted when we got to our car.

    (3)
  • Jen C.

Really cheap ice cream that has light artificial flavors (like mild sweethearts candy) and the texture of gelato, but I didn't see what the huge fuss was about on Yelp. We had made it a point to come here for its raved uniqueness and tastiness, but I don't think it was worth it. You go into a small shop, and you get two scoops in a small dixie cup. Your only choices are pineapple and strawberry. I don't get it. What am I missing that everyone else sees?

    (3)
  • Kevin S.

My usual is 4 scoops pineapple and 1 scoop strawberry on top. I went to Maui during this labor day weekend and I had guri guri twice everyday. On my last day I also took four pints home and TSA did not question at all, yay! I was so worried that I had to eat all four pints before I left Maui. I packed it in my non-thermal hand carry and it lasted the drive from HNL to Kapolei. Just make sure you put it in the freezer asap.

    (5)
  • Daris A.

Two flavors...pineapple and strawberry..so simple so delicious and refreshing. If planning to take it to the neighbor island it is suggested to pick it up 1.5 hours or less to flight time. Sold in 2 qts, 4 qts.. etc... my one worry was that tsa would confiscate it, but its pretty well packed, and clearly marked as to what it is.

I love the guri guri! This place is my first stop after landing in Maui, my last stop before returning to the airport, with plenty of visits in between!

  • Melissa L.

its like Shokudos Honey Toast, you never fully understand how something so simple could be so amazing! I dont have some cute story about grandma/grandpa bringing me here every weekend for a "treat". I live on Oahu and about 5years ago came with my bestfriend and every year since then, my husband and i visit Maui and of course we NEED to stop here. We adore it. Small family owned business. Cheap treat. Theres pineapple and strawberry, you can get singles or mix the flavors if you're feeling zazzy. Cash Only last time i went. They do ship the Guri-Guri as well.

  • Ronald S.

OK some mainlander or world class traveler's going, "Yeah Ron? Seriously? Well I have tasted the best ice creams, sorbets and frozen treats from around the world!" Okay world class traveler or frozen dessert guru, I don't care, this is my opinion. Tasaka's rule the school, and maybe there's just pineapple and strawberry guri guri, but the fact is they've been around before I was born says a lot. I'm more than a fan, I'll give it 5 stars. Just because...just because. The quality of those two flavors as been consistent over the years, that matters. However...I think the scoops was bigger when I was a kid? No matter 5 stars and I'm sticking to my guns. Anti Gun peeps, this is a figure of speech get a life will you?

Nothing compares and I don't even know what you call this except guri guri! I think it's a blend of sorbet and sherbert??? If you're on Maui, this is one place you have to stop by and get this awesome cold treat! It doesn't matter if it's hot or cold or day or night, just stop by here and taste it for yourself! I made the tourist mistake since I don't come here often and asked what "flavors" they had; they only have two flavors, strawberry and pineapple. My recommendation is get both flavors so you have the best of two worlds!

    (5)
  • Jonathan T.

Advice For Tourists: They only serve two flavors of sorbet: Strawberry and Pineapple. I got a scoop of each and it was alright. Honestly, I believe this is a gem for the locals for the nice service and extremely cheap price. Bottom Line: Probably couldn't get a cheaper sorbet on the island. But if you're willing to chip in a few more dollars, adventure for better ice-cream lies elsewhere.

How this place has managed to stay the same for decades is beyond me - but I'm so glad they have! It's a must. I went here as a kid and now 30 years later I've taken my own child. Something this long-lasting can't be bad. You won't be disappointed. I only wish we could take quarts off island (as carry ons) like we used to... damn you terrorists!!!

  • Jennifer S.

It was a treat I enjoyed growing up on Maui and I still try to stop here each time I'm home for a visit. Guri guri is a refreshing yumminess that I crave. It only comes in two flavors: strawberry and pineapple and is very reasonably priced. I'm not sure if they still sell them with Azuki beans too but I love the strawberry plain. They're sold by the scoop but believe me when I say you don't want to buy less than 3 scoops of this yummy treat!

    (5)
  • Lani R.

This is a local favorite! I always go here when I visit maui nothing fancy just yummy . If you want to experience local old school style ice cream this is it. Its not ice cream its like more of a gelato. When I lived on maui I also brought home to honolulu!

    (5)
  • Al D.

Very cheap, today there was a special and each scoop was $0.40. Obviously great price but scoops are tiny. Place could benefit from more flavors. Guri guri not for everyone.

    (3)
  • Ashley L.

They only had 2 flavors when we went there; strawberry and pineapple. The strawberry one tasted like bubble gum. Both flavors were okay only.

    (3)

    Unique!

  • Mindy D.

2 flavors: strawberry and pineapple. Super cheap and super yummy!

  • Denalee C.

Wanna see some locals? Come here. Truly the only area where we saw locals on our trip. The strawberry is much much better than the pineapple, but at 80 cents a scoop, try them both and then decide. We came here twice in a three day Maui trip. It's that good.

    (5)
  • Cherrylani R.

Best customer service, super cheap. I love guri guri. The down side is that they close to early. Lol

    It's a Maui staple!

Located in the same plaza as longs drugs. Small mom and pop shop. Only two flavors available: strawberry and pineapple. According to a local that was in the line ahead of me, this place is so good that it is 5 scoop minimum for him every time. I was very full from my lunch so I only ordered two scoops, one of each flavor. I liked the pineapple flavor better the strawberry flavor. Very refreshing. Texture is a mix between an icy and sherbet.

  • Noah C.

Local friends had been pumping me up about Tasaka for months, so I was jazzed to get the chance to actually try it. As my star rating indicates, the results were mixed. I love places like Tasaka - hole in the wall, family owned, turning out limited specialty products. So I was bummed I couldn't enjoy my ice cream here a bit more. I will say the pineapple flavor is worth the trip, but the strawberry flavor just completely turned me off. It tasted like old-school Thrifty bubble gum flavored ice cream, if that rings any bells for anyone - but not in a good way. The pineapple flavor was awesome, though.

    (3)
  • Henry S.

Delicious sherbert and at a great price. I definitely liked strawberry more than the pineapple flavor. A must try if you wanted to take a day off from having hawaiian shaved ice!

    (5)
  • Kayla A.

Like what the other reviews said, this place is yummy! The prices are very reasonable and have gone up since my childhood days but what hasn't? This is a type of sherbet that is really soft! This is definitely a must-try when on Maui. It's available in 2,3,4, or 5 scoops. They also have quarts for you Guri Guri lovers or if you simply want to share with a large crowd. Aside from Guri Guri, they also sell hot dogs (upon availability), chips, & drinks. It is a family-owned and operated business so there are times when they close down for a week or two so call ahead of time to see if they are open if you plan on driving from the West Side just for Guri Guri.

    (5)
  • Malika L.

Probably the best sherbet I've ever had!!! The strawberry pineapple was so good!! Wish they had more flavors, but I guess I can appreciate the simplicity!

    (5)
  • Monica J.

Highly recommended by my friends who live in Hawaii and SO GLAD I found this spot!!! The Strawberry and Pineapple sherbet like ice cream was AMAZEBALLS! I don't know how to explain it but it tastes totally different from traditional ice cream, yogurt, or sherbet! MUST TRY!

    (5)
  • Doreen B.

You really can't go wrong with $1.10 for 2 scoops of light, refreshing, Maui sunshine in a cup. Served up with your standard wooden sherbert/sorbet spoon on a warm summer/spring/fall/winter Hawaiian day will turn any tropical storm frown upside down. :) This is a mandatory spot if you're going to hit the Whole Foods salad bar. ;)

Tasaka's Guri Guri is sweet and simple. It is another must-eat on our list when we come to Maui. We usually end up eating guri guri a few times on our trip because it is light and fresh without making us feel like uber fatties. I agree with Josh L., this stuff is addicting. With only two flavors, strawberry and pineapple, I think the consistency of the guri guri is what wins us over. It isn't ice cream but it isn't sorbet. It's icy like sorbet but fluffier and creamier. Tastes like a dream. The scoops are tiny but the prices are tiny as well. I usually get 2 or 3 scoops of a mixture of the two flavors. 2 scoops is about $1.10 and 3 scoops is $1.65... so 55 cents a scoop. Just look for the pink shop around the corner from Longs, another amazing store in Hawaii. I always gotta stock up on Locals and musubi makers at Longs. Just don't go asking for an ice cream sandwich from Tasaka Guri Guri like my n00b cousin did once.

  • Tiffany D.

Like sherbet made with condensed milk! Crazy. Pineapple definitely better than strawberry...And at $1.20 for 2 scoops u really can't go wrong! Agree with Su-Lynn T. that it's novelty and price but the dessert is good too...not This shop is a Maui tradition, from a family famous for being awesome at desserts. They've kept prices down as homage to old times. Awesome.

  • Kymberli C.

I was excited to try this because I saw the pictures and the flavor looks like it would be super strawberry or pineapple-y... and it had such great reviews! but overall it was super sweet and not really fruity at all. I googled what it really is after and saw a recipe and it's basically it's a fruit juice, 7 up and condensed milk... frozen. They both didn't taste like strawberry or pineapple to me. I give it 3 stars because it is super cheap and the lady scooping was nice and very fast and efficient.... but I probably wouldn't come back for more.

    (3)
  • Doris D.

It's SO good, it's definitely something you should get if you're in Maui, both as a local and as a visitor! Their specialty is sherbet and they only have 2 flavors, both excellent. Rather than choose between pineapple and strawberry, just get both! It's also insanely cheap so you might as well make your taste buds happy with variety.

    (5)
  • Erich D.

The pineapple flavor is much better than the strawberry flavor which I didn't care much for. It's cheap, but they only have the two aforementioned flavors so don't be expecting a Baskin Robbins-like variety. I did have a hair in the middle of my scoop of pineapple which I thought was a little gross and very surprising as I've never found a hair in ice cream/sherbert before.

    (2)
  • Olive P.

This was inexpensive and not gross, but between the kid outside the store harassing and insulting people for money and the unstable man following us back to our car, this wasn't a high point of our vacation.

    (2)
  • Cherish H.

I like orange. The red one tastes like bubble gum. This treat is really inexpensive, it's kind of like ice cream but less creamy. A good refreshing snack.

    (4)
  • Vikéndios N.

This is the infamous guri guri of Maui. How can you not love this refreshing alternative to ice cream and yogurt?! There's 2 flavors, strawberry and pineapple, and I love both. Its not overly sweet or filling. Get 1 to 5 scoops or a pint. They also pack them for inter-island flights. They no longer have azuke beans for a topping. Closed on Sundays, cash only.

    (5)
  • Lei B.

It's not really ice cream. I really had high expectations too. The strawberry and pineapple flavors were good, but it wasn't ice cream! The consistency was more like a sorbet with the icy texture than ice cream. Definitely not what I was expecting, but at least it was cheap and refreshing.

    (3)
  • Jamelva B.

A Maui staple. Family run. Traditional, friendly and inviting, unique, and true to what it first was. Cheap, refreshing, scrumptious. Is it ice cream? Nope, so don't expect it. It's GURI GURI. Only offers two flavors- pineapple and strawberry. Or both! Comes in a cute little Dixie cup (unless you order bigger containers) with a classic wooden spoon. It just makes you smile, yah know? Just a perfect treat for anyone on a hot day. On 100 degree summer days in Chicago, I would kill to have one!

    (5)
  • Kimberly J.

This place is a landmark. I was born and raised on Maui, and for the 25 years that I've been here, I don't know anyone that does NOT like Guri Guri! The family that owns and works there is always so kind, and the prices are unbelievably cheap -you can probably buy one small Guri Guri with the loose change in your car! I love all the flavors, so I always order the mixed. The taste is definitely different from sherbet/ice cream, it's something you need to taste and discover for yourself! and FYI, this is the only one in all of Hawaii, so I know of a lot of people that desperately try to find ways to get it shipped or packed in dry ice to the neighboring islands!

    (5)
  • Trevor T.

go get some! it's the best treat for anyone from small kid up to grandma/grandpa! i'm always a big fan of the strawberry flavor, but friends i've gone with like the pineapple (go figure). they charge per scoop and it's a really good deal (read: cheap)! If you're on maui, do your friends/family a favor and bring some tasaka guri guri home! if you don't know what guri guri is, just get over to maui and try some - your sweet tooth will be happy you did!

    (5)
  • Darren W.

Always refreshing to eat guri guri. Have to get both strawberry and pineapple. 3-4 scoops is a decent serving. cash only over here too.

Some places take you back to childhood, hanabutta days, simpler times. Those places are so few and far between today, that when you do find one, you hold on tight. and you keep going. Its a tradition, among tourists and locals alike. You MUST make a stop at Maui Mall, for that famous little corner shop. The Tasaka grandpa and daughter stand at attention behind the counter, patiently awaiting the steady stream of customers coming in. Grandpa Tasaka handles the money, the younger lady scoops up your order. One, two, up to five scoops? Pineapple or strawberry? Mix them? Creamy, light, not too sweet, perfect consistency. The product of a secret family recipe. Three scoops for $1.80. Hits the spot on a sunny Maui day. and leaves you with money to spare. I go and join the throngs of people, kids, adults, families sitting along the mall benches eating their guriguri in dixie cups, with wooden spoons.

    (4)
  • Suany W.

Dannngggg...what do they put in this stuff?! It was my first time trying guri guri and my taste buds were going crazy! I was told strawberry was the more popular flavor, but the less artificial-tasting pineapple was my favorite. I was in a pretty foul mood that day but this definitely cheered me up. I wish I could get this in the Bay Area to pacify those monthly PMS episodes.

  • Erin O.

When it's hot and humid, Guri Guri is just what this world needs. Please note, do not confuse Guri Guri for ice cream, or sherbet. It's not either. If you want ice cream or sherbet, go and find it elsewhere. I don't need to hear you complain that it sucked as ice cream. If you had ice cream, and said it sucked as shave ice, yeah, it would, but that's not what you're eating! The store is still run by the same family, and that's cool. The recipe has been attempted elsewhere, but it just doesn't taste the same anywhere but at Tasaka's. It comes in 2 flavors, and though I do prefer the pineapple, my standard order is 3 scoops mix. Note, not mixed, just mix. You get 2 scoops of strawberry, which does taste a bit like bubblegum, and 1 scoop of pineapple. The pineapple really does taste like pineapple. The pink tastes pink. Kind of like purple drink for purple. It's served in a Dixie cup, and it's still inexpensive, though it's not the 85 cents I used to pay when I was a kid. It's a perfect sized treat, won't fill you up, and gets you cooled down fast. It's the first thing I get when I get off the plane, if I can help it, and well, it tastes like childhood and that is a flavor which is priceless.

    (5)
  • Gina L.

No line, fast service, great homemade ice cream. What more can you ask for? Other reviews are right, the ice cream is more icy and less creamy than regular ice cream. You don't feel as guilty. The scoops are small but I think it's perfect. The prices are very affordable. There are only 2 flavors: pineapple and strawberry. I liked the pineapple much more than the strawberry because it's not as sweet. We didn't get any pints to go.... hopefully next time!

    (4)
  • Su-Lynn T.

Ok the 4 stars are really about the novelty of this dessert and the price. It's probably the cheapest dessert you can get in Maui! it's about a buck and change for a scoop. There are 2 flavors, pineapple or strawberry. We got one of each. The dessert itself is not bad...it's a little too sweet for me and tastes like sherbert made with condensed milk. Not a bad thing, but I'd much rather have a shave ice when it comes down to it. I know people who really love it though and a must stop in Maui. It's worth a stop if you're in area, because guri guri is such a special local treat only available in Maui. So popular that people from other islands bring home tubs of it! LOL. So try it at least once! Maybe you'll love it!

I thought this would be better. It was just okay. My brother was sad too. He said they changed it. :(

So delicious and a must have when in maui!! The strawberry flavor does taste like bubblegum... but it's amazing!!

    (5)
  • Kathy H.

Came here on the insistence of hubby because he had fond memories of Guri Guri from...20 years ago. lol, so we made a special trip just to find it. Like people have said before regarding the consistency, it's definitely different. It's not as thick as ice cream, but not quite light like a sherbert. I liked the consistency though, didn't feel heavy like ice cream can be sometimes. As for the flavors...uhhh the pineapple is ok (albeit definitely artificial tasting), but the strawberry is weird. It did not taste like strawberry at all, more like...bubble gum? Did not enjoy it, I actually had to dig around the strawberry to get to the pineapple because it was on the bottom. It's cheap though, so I guess that's a plus?

    (2)
  • Henry T.

Good stuff! Only 2 flavors, Strawberry & Pineapple. I prefer the pineapple but it is so cheap, why not have a scoop of each. Guri Guri, from what I can decipher, is much like sherbet but I find it has a drier consistency than the usual sherbets & sorbets. This place has been around for a long long time.

    (4)
  • Arianne T.

The only place in the world where I know where to get Guri Guri. We had just devoured a shrimp plate lunch from Geste's and this was a great way to soften the garlicky taste in our mouths. Tasaka's is super cheap and their Guri Guri is definitely unique - a cross between sherbert & ice cream. We loved both flavors. How could you go wrong with a refreshing dessert for a buck and some change?

    (5)
  • DanVy N.

Guri Guri is supposed to be a cross between ice cream and gelato. This tiny shop is like a hole in the wall ice cream parlor - it's located at the very end of a seemingly deserted mall and there's only TWO FLAVORS! Strawberry and pineapple. The strawberry had too much artificial flavoring and I couldn't really taste the strawberry, but the pineapple flavor is good! You can get up to 5 scoops or 1 quart. The scoops are TINY though, I initially got 2 scoops, but ended up sharing 2 more scoops with my sister and niece. This was a really good find for us and satisfied our cold, sweet cravings after our biking adventure in the Haelakalae mountains.

We have a Guri-Guri knock-off here on Oahu sold at Samurai Shave Ice in Aiea, and I thought it was the same until I saw Tasaka's and tasted the actual thing. Trust me... it is not the same.... lol Guri-Guri Ice-cream comes only in 2 flavors, Strawberry and Pineapple. It is the one treat that everyone wants when asked, "What do you want me to bring you back from Maui?" You have to try it to understand why... Here are a few tips if you want to bring some home... 1. CALL THEM!!! Make sure they have the pre-packed frozen solid pints for you to take home and RESERVE IT BEFORE IT SELLS OUT! Make sure you also confirm your pick up times with them to ensure they are open. 2. The pints are frozen a week in advance, and will last 2.5 hours in a cooler without ice. We were able to push ours to approximately 3.5 hours because out cooler had great insulation. 3. Make sure you have a cooler to check-in at the airport, you NEED to check it in because it is considered a "gel / liquid" If you don't have one, Tasaka's sells a cute cooler bag there which fits 4 pints in it for about $12.

  • Thom C.

Off the beaten path for great cross between ice cream and sorbet. This is now a tradition my family will establish every trip to Maui. They only have 2 flavors- pineapple and strawberry but that's is what makes it great. The scoops are small so order a 5 scooper and its equivalent to 2 scoops at 31 flavors.

    (5)
  • Steve H.

BEST Sherburt/Icecream shop anywhere in the world. Totally cheap and so mmmm mmmm good! I went in on a recommendation and holy hell it was the best ever. I had to go back for seconds. Next time I'll have to get 5 scoops. total heaven in a dixi cup. Next time you arrive in Maui, stop in Tasaka Guri Guri at the Maui Mall and get as much awesomeness you can.

  • Yuree N.

Guri Guri, PLEASE COME TO OAHU! I don't know if I'd say this is a "must try" while you're in Maui unless it has some childhood sentimental value for you because you'd come here all the time as a kid. But I do think if you're in the area, which you probably are if you're going to or from the airport, you should definitely stop by and grab a cup of guri guri. I personally like the pineapple flavor more. It's not the tart flavor you'd expect. And I think the strawberry tastes more like bubble gum flavor and doesn't have quite that sweet berry flavor, but maybe that's just me. Don't forget to bring cash (just a couple of dollars) and Lactaid (for fellow lactose intolerant people, there's definitely milk in this)!

Some say that money can't buy happiness. I say, BULLSHIT.. Happiness can be bought for $1.20/two scoops in Kahului, Maui. Tasaka Guri Guri is a local treasure that has been around for many years. When my mom was a kid growing up in Maui, she would go to Tasaka Guri Guri for the two scoops of their sherbert/sorbet/ice cream creation in a little cup. When she grew up and had kids of her own (my sister and me!), she took us to get the two scoops of frozen delight. I will probably do the same when I have a family of my own. Seriously though, I don't know what kind of witchcraft they use to make their guri guri, it's delightful, it makes people happy, and it always leaves me wanting more. The guri guri comes in two flavors: strawberry (the original), and pineapple. Both are divine. It's available in 2, 3, 4, or 5 scoops.. or if you so desire, you can order a tub and even have it shipped somewhere else. I'm always tempted to ask, "Can I just eat the entire tub?" Did I mention that President Bill Clinton stopped by and enjoyed this local treat? I mean, if the president who presided over the longest economic expansion says it's good, IT'S GOTTA BE GOOD. It's conveniently located in the Maui Mall, relatively close to the Kahului Airport, so it's a definite first and last stop during our visits to the island. My mouth is watering just thinking of eating guri guri.

  • Kim S.

OMG, the smooth, creamy, cold concoction transported me back to childhood (2 years ago - LOL!). Stopped in daily while on Maui. My French Friend adored the creamy sherbet. Strawberry has my heart but I always got 1 scoop of pineapple too. Tip: They have packs for transport (max 2 hours). Not sure if TSA will allow on the plane tho. Good luck!

    (4)
  • Jody S.

Used to stop by here at least once during my visit to see grandparents when growing up. For some reason it tastes better on a hot humid afternoon. I love the strawberry! I can eat lots of it without feeling guilty..or at least I like to think so. Too bad they don't have it in LA.

This is a very late review, like a year and months later. I just realized that I never wrote reviews about places that we went to during our Maui trip in March 2009. We came here twice. It was in a dead plaza, but the whole reason we came to the plaza was to visit this place. YUM. So smooooth and yummy. Not a lot of flavor options, but the pineapple and strawberries were yum. We actually enjoyed taking pictures infront of the sign while eating our ice cream. Now let me look for that picture.

  • Tamra P.

There is something to be said for focused product offerings. You come here for the real deal original guri guri, strawberry or pineapple, super cheap ($1.20 for 2 mini scoops). Delicious, and reminiscent of hana bata days....even though I didn't grow up on Maui, it just has that old school after-school treat kind of feel.

  • Tanya E.

This was our first time here and we foolishly ordered 2 scoops each (they are pretty small) and promptly returned and each ordered 2 more scoops! This stuff is AMAZING! There's only 2 flavors, pineapple and strawberry. If you like the consistency of homemade ice cream/sherbet, you'll love this. It melts fast, so you gotta eat it quick. It's sooooooooo good! They sell cute shopping bags with their logo. Grab one, they're only 50 cents. The place was a little hard to find. It's in the shopping center across from the harbor behind the Long's Drugs. A perfect stop on the way to upcountry (we went to the Lavender Farm). Check it out!

  • D K.

always been a family favorite. the price is amazingly reasonable. we all grew up on it. it's good :) it's located on the west end of Maui Mall.

  • Yvonne G.

Guri guri is a must stop while I'm on Maui. My order "2scoops, 1 of each please". Consists of pineapple and strawberry flavors. Perfect for a quick light sweet treat for the hot Maui weather. Service is always friendly and quick. Plus inexpensive, infact i think its the only treat that you an get for that price!

    (5)
  • Jeremy L.

Good stuff! Although, the "strawberry" didn't quite taste much like strawberry. It tasted more like "bubble gum" as my wife would describe it. The pineapple tasted like pineapple, however. Either way, it definitely hit the spot after Geste Shrimp truck. A great way to end the trip and kill some time before your flight back is to stop here, get a couple scoops of guri guri, and check out the pet store or walk around the rest of the plaza.

    (4)
  • Paul H.

Don't get it. The elderly man was super nice, strawberry and pineapple I guess are the only flavors which is fine, and it was cheap. Ice cream is fine, nothing special. Not sure why we had people telling us about it.

    (3)
  • Jordan S.

I mean, come on...... can you really hate on this place? No. Every time I come maui, I gotta get some. I was only there for two days last time, and stopped both days. Always get the 4 scoop mixed. Super good. Always gonna be a favorite. So sad its not on Oahu. :(

    (5)
  • Richard P.

A local favorite, Guri Guri is like sorbet with condensed milk. Great as a like snack. Quite refreshing in the warm weather of Maui. There are two flavors available Strawberry and Pineapple. Both were good, but Pineapple is the way to go! Reasonably priced 5 scoops were under $3. Cheap and Affordable! How can you not try it out?!

    (4)
  • Paolina T.

It is not ice cream. It is not sorbet. It is the most artificial cold concoction I have ever had. Then I learned how to make Guri-Guri: One 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk One 12 oz. can 7 Up (highly recommended; don't use diet 7 Up or Sprite) Two 12 oz. cans Strawberry Soda (any brand; note, she INSISTS on using Strawberry and no other flavor) I'm sorry folks, but I am Italian and I love my gelato. I also scream for ice cream. Guri guri, had it once and that is plenty...

    (1)
  • Jenny L.

A scoop of each flavor (strawberry and pineapple) in a little dixie cup for $1.10. It's good to know that so little money can bring me so much joy. The texture of the ice cream (or is it sherbet? maybe gelato? but definitely not froyo) is creamy and tangy at the same time. Very refreshing!

    (5)
  • Sean M.

I live here and still go to Tasaka Guri Guri over Baskin Robbins who is in the same mall anyday. The prices can't be beat and they only come in their two original flavors over the years....pineapple and strawberry. Sometimes on rare occasions they have lime or something different but that's once in a blue moon and you only can get it by the quart. I've even bought the quart to take home but let me warn you that the consistency is much different from buying it in store. At the store it is much softer and cremier, but the home version is hard and flaky due to my freezer like everyone else's is much colder. The taste is still there though so that's good.

    (5)
  • Casey O.

Geez, I don't know how many years i've been coming here even though I don't live in Maui! Yet, everytime we go to maui, the first place my family and I want to stop off at is Guri Guri! The texture is so perfect and because there's only 2 flavor choices, the (usually) long line goes by quickly! In the 1 week of vacation in maui, we'll probably go get guri guri 3 times or more! It's so cheap and so refreshing! AND since it's mostly locals, I think it helps raise our kamaaina street cred! haha.

  • Jay B.

For the price and just the politeness of the staff, this place is awesome! I paid just over a buck for two scoops of ice cream...albeit they were small scoops, but they were delicious! And this is coming from a guy that's not a huuuge fan of dessert and ice cream in the first place! It's simple ice cream and they have only have a few flavors available(I would say to get the strawberry and pineapple, just like everyone else says). But really really good. It's a simple shop, just like their ice cream, so you're in and out real quick...and since it's so small, you might run into a large crowd during rush times, but it was relatively empty when I went on a Sunday. Check out their business hours tho, because the first time we tried to go, it was closed...they might close early evenings. The servers were really nice and kind and since they're just serving you ice cream, there isn't much to expect on the service side, so it's another plus. Parking - it's in a plaza/shopping mall parking lot, so that's not much of a problem. Very refreshing and not too heavy...I'd come here every day on my next trip if I could.

Growing up I was asked by my parents if I wanted to visit Kauai or Maui for spring vacation and I ALWAYS chose Maui because of this store. The strawberry and pineapple ice cream is to die for!! First timers have to try BOTH!! Other restaurants on Oahu have tried to copy their strawberry version, but have not come close. This is definitely a must have when traveling to Maui. YUM-O!! Food: ***** Service: **** Ambiance: **** Value: *****

Standard Maui! Mandatory for every visit - even though they stopped making the azuki beans! No contenders this one is the only and the best! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Reminds me of trips with my Grandpa to see his old stomping grounds on Maui.

This place is legendary on Maui. Located in Kahului in the Maui Mall Tasaka's is known for their legendary "Guri Guri" frozen dessert treat which is a cross between a yogurt/sorbet/ice cream. It comes in two flavors, strawberry and pineapple served in a paper cup. Maui residents grew up on this stuff and any tourist who stops here must try some. In addition to serving guri guri the shop also serves other treats and snacks like hot dogs but this place is all about the guri guri. Cool off and have some today!

Had to make a stop here as a walk down memory lane. My dad use to take me here growing up. Been away from Hawaii 10yrs+ now and it was a wonderful visit. Guri Guri taste wonderful and still delicious served in paper cups; eaten with a small wooden spoon and small (cookie dough) scoop size. My favorite is strawberry, but we also had the pineapple too. My dad use to eat it with azuki beans. I myself don't like it that way, but, it is still ALL GOOD! This brought back so many good memories. I hope they are passing down the business to other family and keep this local Maui treasure alive!

There's a very sentimental quality to getting Guri Guri for those of us from Hawaii. It adds to the deliciousness! Tasaka Guri Guri has been a Maui institution since forever. I remember when I was just 4 or 5 years old, getting Guri Guri with my parents after shopping at Woolworth. I loved it then and I love it now. Sitting outside on a warm day, eating my Guri Guri with a little wooden scoop-thing is something I look forward to every time I go home. Not only is it delicious, it's also super cheap! Only $1.20!

    (5)
  • vic f.

Bring on the mobs... Not sure what the hype is all about, unless you only got $1.20 in your pocket. Its a sherbet, nothing more and nothing less. It too light in flavor and texture, something was missing. Sorry for the voice of dissent.

If you've never had Guri Guri, you should go to Tasaka Guri Guri Shop for it!

  • Chrissie O.

Searched for ice cream in the area and this place popped up. So decided to stop by. Simple choice strawberry or pineapple. The scoops are tiny. I ended up getting 2 scoops and they put it in a tiny dixie cup. If you go then get 4 scoops. It was ok. Not something i'd go crazy about.

This is a O-face waiting to happen and packaged neatly inside of a tiny little cup. If the actual Bill Clinton stopped by, you know it's has to be some real good stuff because we all know what great taste he has. This is a must stop-by if you're visiting Maui. I go here almost every time I visit whether for work or fun. Guri Guri for those who do not know is like a hybrid between Ice Cream and Sorbet. It's has a texture of a sorbet, but creamy like an ice cream. They only hav 2 or 3 flavors and that's really all they need. Each bite is super packed with flavor! The best part - it's only like a $1 for a scoop or couple dollars for multiple scoops! Also for those travelling inter-island, they have a dry ice pack that you can take with you so you can share your O-face with everyone back home. Overall, a must for any visitor to Kahului, Maui. If you haven't tried Tasaka Guri Guri.....well....you've done missed out on life. Ha ha. Well it's not like that, but pretty close.

  • Arlene C.

Definitely a local favorite! You may have difficulty finding it as it is located in a small outdoor shopping plaza towards the back corner of the mall. The shop is small so keep an eye out for the sign. They only offer two flavors during the time we went: strawberry and pineapple. Of the two my favorite was the pineapple. The texture of the ice cream/sorbet is very light and creamy. Its a sorbet with condense milk. You can never go wrong with condense milk!! Prices are CHEAP..you are better off going with the more scoops as their really is no price difference between 2 scoops to 5..haha This is a nice little treat to cool down or just in the middle of the day.

  • Michelle S.

A friend had suggested I try Guri Guri and for some reason I was expecting more of an ice cream parlor than a tiny hole in the wall shop that only served two flavors of this sherbert. The pineapple was my favorite! However, for my taste is was very very sweet... and a little too soft serve for me. I think I prefer ice cream instead but I'm glad I can say now that I tried it.

I've been a customer for a while now and just recently noticed that their Strawberry flavor has really improved. I mean it was good before but it really has that nostalgic Strawberry flavor like they did years ago. Does anyone else notice this? Anyways, I'm a huge fan of this shop and appreciate the friendliness of all the employees. They always have smiles on their faces even with the long lines of customers. Super affordable. A perfect treat for any day!

Went to Maui this weekend and my last stop (literally) before the Airport was Tasaka's! Because they DO pack Guri Guri that you can take to neighbor islands. They come packs of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 quarts (and you get an even amount of strawberry and pineapple.) Only hard part is it only lasts for 2 hours until it melts... so get it early and pack it in dry ice or take it as a carry-on. *Warning: TSA might want to scan it twice. Finally ate some of it last night and it was yummy!

    (5)
  • Kay K.

Note that 2 scoops is a size of a dixie cup so I definitely recommend getting 3 scoops or more. Also, you don't need to choose between the Pineapple and Strawberry. You can get them both!

    (5)
  • Angela K.

Where else can you still find 2 scoops of ice cream for $1.10?! Even cheaper than Thrifty Ice Cream. Simple and tasty - what else can you ask for? No lines, quick service, and a happy tummy after a scoop of strawberry + pineapple! YUM!

    (4)
  • Haley C.

I'm writing this review because I am absolutely CRAVING guri guri right now! I grew up on Maui and this place has always been one of my favorite dessert destinations. It is cheap and the portions are reasonable. My favorite flavor is strawberry. The pineapple flavor is good, but strawberry is the way to go! And of course if you want you can mix the flavors. I really miss this place, I will most likely get some guri guri the moment I visit Maui for Christmas break. Can't wait!

    (5)
  • Travis M.

Love this place. 2 scoops of strawberry, one scoop of pineapple served by a cute little old man. Definately a go to place when in Maui.

  • Sab T.

Always a favorite when on Maui. Guri Guri is like ice cream layered with evaporated milk...it is really good- if you like creamy desserts. I recommend the double scoop combo-one scoop strawberry and one scoop pineapple.

    (4)
  • Consuela P.

If you have never tasted guri guri, Tasaka's is the place to go. It's definately one of the 1st place I always go to when I'm on Maui...it's a must! It's so ono :) Double scoop of mixed strawberry/pineapple sherbet; a nice way to cool off after browsing through the stores at Maui Mall!

    (5)
  • Scott S.

I'm not sure what else this place offers other than its famous Guri-Guri ice cream, but since that's what I always get it doesn't matter. The ice cream isn't like regular ice cream. Actually, you just have to try it for yourself. They only have two flavors, strawberry and pineapple, but that's all they need. I try to eat there every time I'm on the Valley Isle.

    (5)
  • Mitzi D.

This is a nice refreshing treat and probably one of the few things I can call "cheap and affordable" on this island. The texture is unique as its a cross between a shaved ice, sherbet and and ice cream all mixed up into a smooth texture. It only comes in two flavors strawberry and pineapple. I don't have a favorite so I like to get a two scoop combination. Bring cash!

    (3)
  • Mike R.

Guri-Guri! Love it! Imagine your first bite of shaved ice with a soft hint of strawberry or pineapple smothered in haupia cream... Das how! Heaven in the mouth.

    (5)
  • Jill L.

It's cheap, but not sure what the hype is. Tasted so artificial, only the pineapple flavor is tolerable.

    I love this place. ono!

  • Eliza H.

Our Maui trip was planned around all the places we wanted to taste...and this was the first place we "tasted" after arriving in Maui. Strawberry for me, please, and pineapple for the hubby. My strawberry sherbert was deelicious! The pineapple was good, too, but the strawberry was way better! It was sweet and creamy...it's not quite ice cream...I am going to put it in the sherbert category until I find out what it is. A definite MUST TRY.

    (5)
  • Jon H.

Good on a hot humid day. I liked the pineapple flavor a lot more than the strawberry. Strawberry tasted more like bubblegum. Very affordable. Good to experience and say that you've tried it.

    (2)
  • B W.

Our friend bought us guri guri takeout from this store. The dessert was light and tasty. It's different from shave ice and a nice change. It's also much cheaper than shave ice which makes it a great alternative dessert.

  • Kanani K.

Guri Guri is the quintessential Old Time Favorite of Maui residents & vistors alike. If you've never gone, just go! You will not be disappointed. Try the mix (combo of their two classic flavors--pineapple & strawberry). Great value for such an awesome secret family recipe!

    (5)
  • Adriana A.

Always a MUST to come here when I'm visiting home on Maui. 5 scoops mixed of strawberry & pineapple. Over the years the price as increased but not by too much it's still really affordable. There's no other place that can duplicate Tasaka's Guri Guri, it has the right amount of sweetness to hit the spot.

    (5)
  • Emma F.

Guri Guri is da best! It's not ice cream, so don't expect that... it's so much better! The people are very nice and the strawberry and pineapple flavors are so tasty! Unfortunately they stopped having azuki topping a good 15 years ago, but still totally THE local snack to have on Maui!

    (5)
  • Jennifer C.

YUMMY YUMMY GURI GURI! I've been here about three times and I always make sure that I stop by here whenever I'm on Maui. I got the strawberry flavor and wow - I just can't explain how ono it was! So smooth and inexpensive! 2 scoops was not enough for me! HIGHLY RECOMMEND coming here whenever you're in Maui!

    (5)
  • Ling K.

I can say "No" to almost anything... yes even to La Mason du Chocolate, BUT.... I can't say no to Guri Guri!!! Every time I visit Maui, I HAVE to eat it!!! It's like an ice cream/sherbet.

Ok so I've been a loyal customer for 37+ years now. I'm always saddened at the prospect of this place closing eventually; it's an institution. The place is almost exactly the same as it was when I was a child. Same wonderful family members, though slightly older now, work there and the grand kids and great grand kids are there sometimes as well. My son & I were there for Father's Day. We were back home from Cali for a family funeral. Nothing is more comforting then familiar things. I recalled the many times that we stopped whatever we were doing in our busy lives, to enjoy a couple of scoops at Tasaka. I'm a 4 scoop (well 3 1/2) strawberry only. My son is a 4 scoop mixed person. My uncle went later that day, and got a mixed pint (lol yeah they have a pint - why bodda you?). Just can say enough about this place. If you are travelling inter-island make sure to call ahead and reserve a couple of quarts. BTW if you live on the continent, don't try to take this with you. You cannot hand carry, because this is a liquid and over 3 oz. If you pack it, it will loss consistancy even if you use dry ice and put it in the freezer bag. (Trust me, I tried it). Do it if you are in a pickle or REALLY UBER JONESING for a little bit of bliss. Tranporting to out of state is not the same, but it's better than nothing.

    (5)
  • Marissa K.

A true Maui gem. I've loved growing up eating Guri Guri, always get the two scoops mixed. There's nothing like it and something so sweet about being able to go to a familiar place that hasn't changed much since childhood. They're still super affordable and still operating as a mom & pop...5 stars for one of the best local businesses on Maui!

    (5)
  • Kristina S.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND whenever you're in Maui! I have been a loyal customer for numerous years. 2 scoop strawberry, 2 scoop pineapple. YUM! When I am in Maui this is my first stop after I get off the plane. One cannot explain how ONO it is! Plus, you cannot beat the price for 4 scoops for under $3.

    (5)
  • Rony H.

YUM. Especially on a hot day (like which day isn't?). They have pineapple and strawberry for flavors. Love love LOVE the strawberry. It tastes like a cross between a sorbet and ice cream. Wish they had more flavors though, it would be interesting to taste them. You can order either 2, 3, 4 or 5 scoops.

    (4)
  • Renee M.

The only business keeping Maui Mall from shutting down completely... Best Sorbet/icecream on the dang island. Only 2 flavors: Strawberry and Pinapple. To be honest all they need are these 2 flavors cuz its sooo good! Light, not over icey tasting, yet not super rich like conventional icecream....just overall satisfying to your palate. I would go back to the hell-hole Maui Mall, just to have one more scoop (ok. Fine 2 more scoops) of their sorbert/icecream.

a must have when visiting Maui. cheap scoops and tastes a lot better fresh

Well, after seeing all the positive reviews, it was our turn to try out this Guri Guri stuff and see what everyone was raving about. We in the area, so decided to stop by. Not knowing exactly where it was located, we walked through the mall and quickly saw a line of folks formed outside a shop and knew instantly this was the place. When we got there, we saw that the place was being run by only one Japanese lady that was working as fast as she could. Taking orders, serving deserts, and making change. The line went quickly and the Guri Guri was a different type of dessert. It was like a mix of frozen yogurt and ice-milk. While I am not ready to end my shave ice addiction just yet, the Guri Guri was OK and I would have it again if in the area.

    (4)
  • Jesse C.

See! The red (strawberry) one does taste like bubblegum!!eleven This stuff is mighty refreshing on a hot day. But I'm not sure if I would say you gotta take a trip to Maui just for it. Obviously, if you're on the island and its hot then you should get one or five scoops.

    (4)
  • Barney F.

Pineapple and strawberry?? Only 2 flavors?? 3 scoops for $1.65?? Ok. I'm sold. Heck of a deal on pricey Maui. If you have kids and are on a budget...come get your Guri Guri. The 3 of us got enough Guri Guri for the price of 1 shave ice. Bring your kids here and let them have all the Guri Guri they want and you'll be their hero.

  • Davey M.

This is where it's at. Let me tell you. You never knew how far a dixie cup and a wooden spoon could go. It so simple almost like a big stick in scoop form, but better. It is perfect for a muggy Maui day. Keep it up Tasakas!

    (4)
  • Connie W.

Great place to stop for a cool off, even if you're short on time. The friendly staff dole out scoops of guri guri about as fast as you can whip out change from your pocket, served with small wooden paddles for an old-fashioned touch. $1.10 for two scoops, if you were curious. Pineapple is the winner for me. Tasaka's guri-guri is yummy-yummy!

  • Love S.

And this is why corporate America is so shallow and holds no worth. It's like Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, the Tasaka's are on the wrong side of the cash flow quadrant. They should be on the big business side along with the investors, but NOoo the Tasakas are on the small business side, and they've stayed there with heart. I respect the Tasaka's for working their business day after day and not selling out. They could've massed a fortune with their secret Guri Guri recipe. There could've been a Guri Guri (pronounced goody goody) fad across America like the ice cream and yogurt trend. But NOOooo, they stayed true to themselves and worked this small little shop to put smiles on children's faces for generations. I miss the Azuki Beans, they don't make them anymore. You can get a Samurai brand of the same sort of concoction at your local grocery store and some local restaurants but it's clearly not the same at all. Boo hoo.

If you're looking for an alternative to shave ice, this is it! You MUST visit Tasaka Guri Guri if you EVER visit Maui. As most of the other reviewers have already mentioned, their sherbet-gelato-ice cream fusion thing is heaven. There's only 2 flavors: Strawberry and/or Pineapple. We tried both flavors, the best being Pineapple because you get that tangy tart taste. The Strawberry was good but lacked in "bite." If you're an adventurer, get a scoop of each flavor and mix! The little store is easy to find since it's located on the corner of the mall, plus, it's PINK! The price is also affordable, it was $1.10 for two scoops. Can't beat the price and taste! Go eat it!

Living on Oahu now and everytime I go home to visit the first place I go to straight from the airport is Tasaka Guri Guri for my 5 scooper, And I always ask, Can I sell Tasaka Guri Guri in Oahu, and they say "NO" But everytime I go there I ask , One day they going say "YES" I hope...LOL Much Love Tasaka Guri Guri, Maui NoKaOi, Go Baldwin Bears Class Of 1975.

2 scoop strawberry, 2 scoop pineapple. Two times. I really have nothing more to say except that I hope the future generations of the Tasaka family keep the goodness coming.....

Small shop in the Maui Mall that sells homemade sherbet. Good pineapple and strawberry sherbet. I still want some shave ice. But the sherbet is refreshing on a hot Maui day.

While on vacation in Maui Hawaii - I relied on Yelp to find those hole in the wall finds and Tasaka Guri Guri Shop was one of them! My first full day in Maui and while window shopping at the Maui Mall in Kahului and I saw a line out the door of this establishment. I then quickly checked my Yelp iPhone app and this place was highly recommended. The line was out the door for their two flavors (strawberry and pineapple only) of yummy sherbert. I made a special trip here three times during my 8 day vacation. Note to self....when in Maui....due to it close proximity to the airport....stop by here for the MMM MMM GOOD sherbert....well worth the trip! :-p

Stuff is addicting. Tried the strawberry and pineapple. It's like sherbet but creamy. Good stuff.

The first time had this ice cream i was like wow this is good. The flavors are really good. To bad they dont have one on Oahu, Hawaii. The best time to eat this si when you are on your way back home from the beach or from the park. I hope to go back there a get more.

    (5)
  • Shannon L.

Delicious Pineapple flavor. Strawberry did not taste like strawberry, tasted like bubble gum toothpaste. For $1.20 for 2 scoops of a frozen treat in this day and age, this place is great. Just be sure to savor the happiness as you will want to gobble it all up.

    (4)
  • Michelle V.

I have never been to Maui, so how can I write a review about a location strictly located in Maui? I'll tell you. I have been in love with guri guri ice cream since I was like circa 8, which is a good many moons ago. My dad used work in Maui and come home to Oahu every weekend and on special ocassion would bring home the most wonderful treat packed in dry ice. I don't remember much of childhood in Hawaii, but I for sure remember guri guri ice cream. I haven't had any since we moved to CA. Which is nearly 20 years ago. And yet I still think about that delicious guri guri ice cream. So that must say something about this stuff right? I dream of going to Maui just so I can have another scoop.

I think I had something like this before when I was little. I just can't put my finger on it. I absolutely loved it!!! It sort of put me back in time. It was so pleasing to have this texture and flavor in mouth. I was so glad to have this pleasure eating experience with my kids. I am sure we will talk about this place for a long time.

    (5)
  • Tiana G.

This place is a local favorite. I remember loving this stuff when I was a kid and it's still delicious years later. Family owned and operated, you need to go to this if you're visiting instead of going to overpriced touristy frozen treat shops. Try the real thing!

    (5)
  • Ava G.

What a cute place. Friend from Oahu recommended this place and said it was a must visit on our trip to Maui. So glad we did. It's kind of a hike from Kaanapali but if your already on that side of the island you should make a trip there. Lot of locals eating this sweet treat. So inexpensive and refreshing.

    (4)
  • Jean H.

$1.10 for two scoops? YES PLEASE!! The bf and I discovered this place (sadly) on our last day in Maui. We walked in right before a horde of a family (many, MANY kiddies) came in. Got one scoop strawberry and one scoop pineapple. It was great! Reminded me of those cups of cherry ice I used to buy from the ice cream truck, 'cept more soft and creamy. The guri guri was really simple, not too sweet.. and didn't get all sticky and messy when it melted. In fact, once it melted, we were happy to pour the rest into our mouths for a delicious finale.

    (5)
  • Jeff C.

Pretty good, but not worth the hype. Sorbet was refreshing and not too sweet. I believe there were only two flavors or something. I would recommend stopping by if you happen to be in the area. Otherwise, save the sweet tooth for something else.

    (3)
  • Jen Y.

The pineapple was absolutely delicious, but the strawberry tasted a bit too much like bubblegum. But I'm not complaining because this place is simply amazing. The texture is smooth but not super creamy, and so worth the price for $1.20/two scoops. I'm glad it's close by to where I work because I'll be going as often as I can!

    (4)
  • Teresa N.

maybe there was just too much hype. tasted like regular ice cream to me. we got two scoops for $1.20, one strawberry and one pineapple.

  • Christina K.

I just came back from a babymoon trip to Maui, and I got a recommendation that I had to try Tasaka Guri Guri because it was the best tasting ice-cream/sorbet ever. It really was the best tasting thing ever since fro-yo! My hubs described it as melted sorbet, but he still enjoyed it so much that we had to go twice during our short trip. They only have two flavors - pineapple and strawberry, but we both thought pineapple was to die for. If only the Maui Mall was closer to our hotel because we definitely would have went everyday to get some guri guri for dessert. I miss it!

    (5)
  • Christine S.

I LOVE my ice cream and would eat it every day if I could. They definitely have some of the BEST ice cream I've ever had! I don't even know if it's really "ice cream" as it has more of an icy texture rather than creamy. Whatever it is... it works! They only have 2 flavors- pineapple & strawberry which are equally as good! This is definitely a stop we'll have to make again next year!

    (5)
  • Arlene A.

You can't visit Maui without making a stop for some guri guri. Simple, cheap and oh so refreshing. With 2 flavors and 2 scoops for $1.10, you can't go wrong. Strawberry & Pineapple make a good combo! They don't give samples but I can assure that you won't be wasting your $1.10 here!

    (5)
  • Char M.

OMG...this place was amazing...totally wouldn't have imagined that it was going to be as good as it was!!! PURE HEAVEN IN A DIXIE CUP!!! They have pineapple and strawberry...that's it for the day I went...not sure if that's how they normally roll. It was perfect for the weather...hot and humid and totally satisfying when you put this delicacy in your mouth...just like other yelpers have said...it's not ice cream, not soft serve, not sherbet or sorbet, and not shaved ice...it's guri guri...and there are no words to truly explain this...if you are ever fortunate enough to be in this neck of the woods...do yourself a favor and stop by...you won't be sorry!!!

    (5)
  • Colbert M.

Thanks goodness this place is still open for business and operated by the family members. With old time shops like this still around you can experience a true taste of Maui's plantation past. Try a combination of strawberry and pineapple scoops!

  • Jessica L.

The Pineapple-Strawberry Guri Guri cup was occasionally rewarded to me after I waited patiently for my mom and dad to peruse the aisles of the neighboring Long's Drugs for sales on spam or nori. I haven't lived on Maui for quite some time now, but when I went back to visit last year, the place was still the same---same nice Japanese owners, same undeveloped mom and pop interior. The Guri Guri is sweet, cool, and air light, which makes it great to eat around the outdoor mall.

    (5)
  • Jonathan G.

A great place to stop by on Maui. Great homemade ice cream! Call and order in advance if you're traveling inter-island. They box and freeze your order for you. Even though they only have two flavors (Strawberry & Pineapple) they are flavorful & simply yummy!

    (4)
  • Bri L.

Great stuff to have after a long hot hike. Cheap too!

    (4)
  • Roniza T.

Maui is known for its guri guri! :-) I love this stuff. Strawberry flavor is everyone's favorite! Though I don't mind mine mixed w/ pineapple flavor, too. The cost is only about $1 something and it's so affordable for such a great treat. I wish we had guri guri on Oahu too! They were popular enough to attract Bill Clinton to have a taste, lol. I think they still have a picture of his visit in the store.

    (5)
  • Beverly T.

Pretty good stuff considering the prices of things on the island are heavily inflated. I enjoyed the pinapple more than the strawberry. The scoops are rather small. I think the secret ingredient is evaporated milk. It melts super fast, so you have to eat it really really quickly. I came here twice. The price is now $1.10 for 2 scoops, effective 5/1/08.

    (4)
  • Amanda C.

Good ice cream-like food for goooood price! What more could i ask for?

    (5)
  • Lawrence T.

Its soft homemade sorbet. Cheap and smooth but its no Italian gelato. With mac nut ice cream on the island this us still a good product but not one I would drive out of the way for.

    (4)
  • X C.

I first went there over 50 years ago. Today the Guri Guri is just as good.

    (5)
  • C M.

So cheap! Pineapple was yummy. Strawberry tasted like bubble gum, not so yummy. Nice treat to cool off with.

    (5)
  • Lori L.

The husband and I came back here three times during the week we spent our honeymoon on Maui. It's not quite icecream and it's not quite sorbet either. It's like a creamy sorbet...We get the mixed flavors. My husband likes to mix it all up while I like to eat my flavors one at time. The price is reasonable too. I wish I could have taken some home with me!

  • Garrett W.

Tasaka Guri Guri is one of the few remaining island-style mom and pop stores. Guri Guri is sort of like sherbert but creamier in my opinion. The store only offers two flavours: pineapple and strawberry for very reasonable prices. Although the scoops may seem small, they're the perfect size for a light refreshing snack and have had the same consistent and unique flavour for as long as I can remember. Guri guri is another one of those Maui-only specialties and locals often take quarts of it as gifts to the neighbor islands. The store once offered azuki beans under the guri guri, but for some reason they stopped, but nobody seems to know why. There have also been new flavors like lime and orange offered on special occasions, but I've only seen them offered once. The little store also hosted former president Bill Clinton when he came to Maui to promote the democratic party several years ago. Supposedly they took him here to give him a sample of local island treats and also because its location offered easier security coverage for his bodyguards.

We had to try this spot having read that it's a local favorite. It definitely was authentic and reasonably priced- two scoops for a dollar. The flavors were rich and tasty and it had a different texture that was fun. Overall I have other ice cream I prefer but I'm glad I tried it.

mmm love those pineapple one better than strawberry. Came the first time they were already closed. Second time just before we're off from Maui, came by had 2 scoops. He said "which kind, mix?" we just nodded. Yumm love the pineapple.

When I asked them if there was anyway a quart of the strawberry Guri Guri would make it to the Mainland, I was serious. I can't explain why this stuff is sooooo good - it just is. It's amazingly inexpensive and tastes different than anything I've ever had [see the other reviews]! AND it's much mo' bettah than BR. I can taste it now.... Loves it.

Guri Guri is a favorite among the locals and tourists alike. It is a little ice cream/sherbet shop located in the Maui Mall. Same location since at least the 70's according to my mom. Guri Guri serves two flavors - pineapple and strawberry. Both flavors are tasty and refreshing and its such a great deal - two scoops in a small cup for $1.20. You can also add Japanese dessert beans to the cup but you have to ask for it. This place is a must-do every time I visit Maui!

Inexpensive, ONO, fantastic on a hot Maui day... Tasaka always hits the spot and always seems to be a magnet for me whenever I venture to Central Maui on the way Upcountry. Dis place is da winnahs

Never have tasted anything like guri guri!! Can't wait to go back to Maui and add it to my daily fix!! :)

Pronounced "goodie-goodie" by many locals, this is the epicenter of Maui desserts. Not quite shave ice, not quite sherbert, and not quite ice cream. It's great on a hot Hawaiian day and is a must try if you're ever on Maui.

Really tasty and cheap treat, and a local favorite. Many people that were locals of Maui come to Maui just to get some Guri Guri. It's like a sorbet or sherbert, but it has a milky taste. It's totally original and there is no way you can imitate a taste like this. I recommend this to everyone.

I'm an old school haole. My first taste of Tasaka Guri Guri was in 1970 when they were located at the old Kahului Shopping Center. My dad would get a haircut from the Japanese barber shop every month or so and then we would eat some guri guri afterward. Also the days when Toda Drug had an old time soda fountain, Ben Franklin Department Store was located there with a one-eyed talking minah bird named Joe, which made cat calls to the ladies -- I digress. One of the reviews below nailed it on the spot when they mentioned it was kind of like a cross between sherbert and ice cream. I'll add that I'd gladly give up all of the ice cream shops in the world and replace them with guri guri shops - the flavors are delightful - but not as "in your face" tart as sherbert. Pineapple and Strawberry are the flavors I recall. Many of the locals get their "Guri Guri" with azuki beans. I'd try that combination now, but I wasn't much of a "mix your food groups together" kid. Beans and ice cream seemed a little crazed for my sensibilities. I'll save my azuki beans for mochi and manju (you'll have to wikipedia that yourself). Tasaka also makes a mean grape slush -- I must have had a zillion grape slushes (and accompanying brain freezes) between the ages of 3 and 18 from Tasaka Guri Guri shop. If you visit Maui and happen to stop by the the Maui Mall Shopping Center, be sure to stop by for some guri-guri. Then you can tell your friends about a true "da kine" experience. Thanks for the memories Tasaka

If it's open when I fly in to Kahului, Tasaka's is my first stop on each visit I make to Maui. The unfortunate thing is such visits don't happen very often anymore. But it's great that, while so much on the Valley Isle has changed from my younger days, Tasaka's Guri Guri remains a constant. I used to have a preference for pineapple, but I now go nuts for strawberry. Yeah, getting four or fives scoops (kinda small scoops, though) is probably not the best thing for you, but in all the excitement of any visit, I just can't control myself. Can't say I know exactly how much it is, but I know it's cheap and a great value. For anyone visiting Maui, don't miss this long-time favorite that blows away any ice cream or sherbet joint on the best island in the state.

I think I was 5 when I had my first taste of Guri Guri ice cream. My family lives in California, but mom, being from Maui, made sure we all went back "home" as often as possible. After picking up a musubi or 5 from Ah Fook's, we'd go straight to Maui Mall for Guri Guri. I'm 37 now and STILL make Tasaka Guri Guri my first stop straight from the airport. I don't even check into the hotel until I've had my two scoop!

This place is hands down delicious. So delicious it compelled me to write my first review here. "Guri guri" is a sort of hawaiian hybrid sherbet-ice cream. The selection consists of only 2 flavors (pineapple and strawberry) but since these are made close to perfect, the folks behind these probably never felt the need to bother with conjuring up other varieties. The consistency is mildly icy as expected with a sherbet, yet paradoxically creamy a la ice cream. The result is amazing. Pineapple is mild and refreshing. Strawberry tastes great too but is somewhat reminiscent of bubblegum. Both are great, but pineapple is the winner. Located in the local strip mall Maui Mall. They don't do samples, but why bother when 2 little scoops served in a dixie cup only cost $1.10? They also come in 3, 4, and 5 scoop denominations. You can mix and match the two flavors. Guri guri, you have made me a fan of your sherbecream.

This was our first stop after arriving on the Island. My girlfriend was raving about this place so we made a stop before checking into our hotel. Good and cheap sherbet. The scoops are served in small cups; we got scoops each for $1.10 each - 1 each of pineapple and strawberry. Condensed milk is added to the sherbet, which gives it a creamy texture. Cash only.

Yum yum! Love the mix of flavors!!! And the prices can't be beat... $1-$3 for 1-4 scoops!

  • Brent K.

Service was fast and this place is cheap! I got 4 scoops, but it wasn't enough. I was craving more! Went with 2 strawberry and 2 pineapple. This place is a must for any visit to Maui!

  • Tony L.

It's like a hybrid of sherbet and ice cream. MmmmMM!! There's only pineapple and strawberry but that's enough. It is CHEAP!! It's a cute family owned business.

Best thing I ever had on Maui. 2 scoops for $1.10! The old man got plenty aloha. Super duper ono. Ate there 3 of my 4 days on Maui. Gotta have this if you go to Maui. You gotta have Popeye forearms to work here, they are scooping non-stop on weekends and holidays.

Tastes the same after all these years. Love the good old fashioned service. Don't know why they would serve Icee when the Guri Guri is what everyone should be ordering. They serve coke so they get a 5!

Mhmmmm, guri-guri! Can't go wrong with guri-guri! I prefer guri-guri over ice cream anyday.....welllllllll, maybe not anyday, just when I feel like eating guri-guri *sluuurp* lol! Hmmm, I think I still have some in the freezer! Ciao Yelpers! Time to eat guri-guri =D

Tasaka Guri Guri is an awesome sorbet/ice cream frozen treat. 2 flavors to choose from. Strawberry or Pineapple. Purchase them by the scoop or by the quart!

I couldn't wait to try this place after reading all the positive reviews. This place did not disappoint. I had a scoop of each flavor and LOVED it! It tastes kind of like frozen soda mixed with sweetened condensed milk. In other words, totally awesome! I wish they had more locations around the island.

Plain and simple very good treat whenever I go to Maui. Strawberry is the best, gotta stop here on the way to the airport.

One of the best thing i've ever eaten! Its a cross between ice cream n sorbet and its soooo good! On my last day to maui i decided to get this and i regret not getting it in the beginning of my trip because i would have gotten it everyday! So refreshing and cheap! I luv'd both flavors strawberry & pineapple! Oh maui i miss u!!

5 scoop strawberry please..... thats all you need to know. get off the plane. get a car. drive to maui mall. park in the back. get a guri guri. theeeeeen you can do whatever the hell else you had planned. unless of course.... they were closed. at which point you are a victim of poor planning. cmon now.

  • Bobo C.

Theres only 2 flavors--strawberry and pineapple. its really cheap so you can get one scoop of each flavor. Homemade icecream is the best. Didn't seem to have much sugar in it so that made it even better! I wish they had more flavors like--guava or passion fruit

    (4)
  • Paras B.

This was a little yummy place we found thanx to fellow yelpers. It has only two flavors pineapple and strawberry. Both are light and delish. We could not believe the price. $1.10 for 2 small scoops..really! I think tomorrow we will try a few extra scoops. Mahalo

THE MAGIC JUNK. Nobody's even really sure what's in this stuff, but they can all pretty much agree that it is awesome. It's ice-cream-esque, but I can't even say for sure if it even has dairy in it. I've been eating it for as long as I can remember, and I still can't believe that this is the only place anywhere to get it? What is it? Where did it come from? How can I get more without having to fly thousands of miles back home? NO ONE KNOWS. Someone once told me it was korean, but then again someone also once told me that the secret ingredient was sprite (I doubt it), so I'm not sure how much to trust rumors. Anyway, a truly unique dessert experience.

Cute little shop. There was a line to get in and order. I had both flavors but enjoyed the strawberry flavor the most. It was light and refreshing. Came back here before heading out to the airport. Yum!

  • Olijohn P.

this is a classic treat here in Maui, strawberry or pineapple the only two flavors they serve you can also get it mixed , Its a local favorite an believe me you have to try it. there prices are reasonable they have 2-5 scoops an the portions are 3-4oz scoops, they also sell it by the quarts

    (5)
  • Esther C.

Awesome! I love this stuff! Its a cross between ice cream and sorbet but its not so tart like sorbet. A good friend recommended me to find this place and I'm so glad we made the drive there! Great prices too! 2 scoops for $1. Between 2 of us, we had 6 scoops of this yummy stuff! I'm excited about coming back to Maui just for some Guri Guri! :)

Honestly, I'm surprised there's not more reviews on this place. A definite must visit when in Kahalui for many, many years. Ask any local. It's sooo good!

  • Melissa M.

The pineapple guri guri is my favorite! The strawberry guri guri tasted kind of weird and totally not like strawberry. It's a cool place to try when you have nothing to do and want to get out of the house. It's also a plus that the scoops are super cheap! Would I go here again? Of course =)

  • todd u.

anytime i visit maui, this is the first place that pops into my head...and it's pretty much the only have-to-visit place on my list. think of getting a shave ice with ice cream on the bottom and the last bites when the ice cream and ice melt together and mix and you have kind of an idea of what guri guri is. it's seriously legit, an explosion of goodness and once you finish, you can't wait to go back for more! my parents have been going there since they were kids so it's nice to have a tradition to continue when they visit home. make sure you get there early cause they close around 4....

    (5)
  • Jennifer K.

I still have no idea how to pronounce this. When I say it, it comes out "goori goori," but when locals say it, it sounds like "gudi gudi." So confusing! In any case, this is a well known snack on Maui. They serve strawberry and pineapple. Luckily, you can get a scoop of each to decide which you like better. (I prefer the pineapple) There's nothing comparable to Guri Guri, so you gotta go check it out yourself. It IS addicting!

    (4)
  • Irene P.

This is a MUST stop if you are visiting Maui. We go here every time we are on the island and we usually stop by more than once. For a local business, it's nice to see that they've kept the price increases reasonable.

  • Moko S.

i don't think the sherbet is worth the 1.20...but if you are in the mood for some ice cream, then i guess it's alright. it just tastes like...ice.

  • J A.

When people ask me where to eat on Maui I ALWAYS say they need to try Tasaka Guri Guri in Maui Mall. This is one of the stops I make when I visit Maui. This little mom and pop shop has been around ever since I was a little child and brings back many memories. On my last visit home, my BF had one taste of it and he couldn't put it down. I really love the pineapple flavored one. MMM yummy.

meh...I'm being mean. If you want to proceed in trying different type of ice cream, this review shouldn't be considered too heavily. It's just when i had dole whip in Oahu, i fell IN LOVE. I wants the "Maui equivalency" and I thought this would be it. I was dissapointed....

The thought of Guri Guri brings back fond memories. What exactly is Guri Guri? That's a tough question and one that people have been trying to figure out for a long time. It's like a cross between sherbet and ice cream. Is it better than ice cream? Maybe not. Better than shave ice? Maybe not either. But, what it does for many people is link them back to their childhood if you've ever eaten it as a kid or grew up on the islands. For those new to Guri Guri, it's a refreshing new treat that will forever link them to Hawaii as it can only be found here.

After playing tourist all week I was told that we were going to get some Guri Guri since you can only get this in Maui (it was located in the mall I though we were getting t-shirts or something). So what exactly is Gui Guri -- I would describe it as a sherbet, but not sugary sweet with a hint of soft ice cream blended in there. With only two flavor selections (Strawberry and/or Pineapple) it was an easy choice. I went with a combo of both in 2 scoops...one can man up and go for the 5 scooper. For anyone visiting Maui make sure you stop in here before you leave. Yummmm!

After living in Japan for six years I have come to the conclusion that Guri Guri (pronounced 'goodie goodie' - like arigato is pronounced 'a dee ga toe') is an adaptation of kakigori, or shaved ice, which Japanese traditionally combine with sweet red beans and cream. Of course Hawaii is also famous for it's shaved ice, which certainly stemmed from Japanese kakigori, but the taste of Guri Guri to me more closely resembles the Japanese version. Not quite as sugary sweet and very refreshing. Taska Guri Guri shop has been around since I was a little girl and is really a Maui institution. It is certainly worth a visit to see the last of the remaning 'Mom & Pop' stores on Maui.

I've been eating guri guri my entire life and it's something that doesn't get old....the strawberry is my favorite....now if only they could put the azuki beans back in..............oh, yum!

  • Carla M.

We went here on a friend's recommendation, and OMG. We can't put our finger on what makes this frozen yogurt/ice cream/little taste of heaven sooooo darn good! They only have two flavors both of which are DELISH! Never judge a book by its cover since this delightful dessert is served in a Dixie cup with a wooden spoon/tongue depressor. Friendliest service, of course. Wish we had more time to go back for seconds!

1/26/08: My wife has been talking about this since we moved back to Hawaii - we finally had the opportunity to stop by Maui Mall to check this place out together. Three scoops of strawberry flavored guri-guri for each of us. I would say that its a cross between gelato with a hint to cream. Not heavy or too sweet, it to hit the spot! The sell pre-packed quarts for those wanting to take back to the other islands-

Chalk one up for 2 scoops mixed... can't beat that with a bat.

This place has been around since I was a little girl. You have two choices - Strawberry and Pineapple. It's like a cross between sherbet and ice cream. This is a cheap and yummy treat to eat after a hot sweaty day at the beach!

Guri Guri is ok to me. My father in law knows the owners and it's a secret to how they make it...darn it! :) To me the strawberry tastes a little like pepto bismo...but the hubby likes it! If i were to get it again...only the pineapple! If you want to take some home to wherever you are they pack it in try ice!!!

i love this place! flavors are so tasty and scoops are inexpensive. the people there are so nice too!

Basically I learned one thing on maui, if the food is actually Hawaiian you should probably stay away from it. If you look at a list of all the top restaurants on the island its turns out that none of them actually serve Hawaiian cuisine. The reason for that is its gross and sweet and sugary. The guri guri was alright. The price of around $1.90 for 4 scoops perfectly reflects the taste. Was it horrible? No. Is it worth stopping for on the way to your hotel/condo/home? Not really.

    (2)
  • Larry M.

However you pronounce it, Guri Guri is great. I take my grandson there and for $1.50 each we have a real treat. I like mixed and he likes strawberry.

    (5)
  • Sumomo O.

This is always my first stop from the airport and my last stop on the way to the airport. For the uninitiated, guri-guri is like no other frozen dessert you've had. Creamy but light. In addition to the guri-guri, get the Kitch'n Cook'd potato chips - the original Maui potato chips. The chips are expensive but worth it: tasty, thick, potatoe-y.

  • Leslie M.

We first discovered this place when I was a kid on a family vacation, probably about 30 years ago! My husband and I went back a few years ago and its even better then I remember it! And it seems like they haven't even changed the prices in the last 30 years! I could eat this stuff every day! Not to be missed!

    (5)
  • Jeffrey H.

A Maui favorite for as long as I can remember! If you're on Maui, there's really no reason you shouldn't stop here. It's about 3 minutes from the airport, and costs just over a buck for two scoops! No one really knows what Guri Guri is, but it doesn't matter, this stuff is goood. Others on Oahu have tried to copy their recipe, but all have failed miserably. If you can't get enough of it, they also sell it frozen in a two quart pack . . . take it back to wherever you're staying and enjoy it all week!!

    (5)
  • Lise T.

Whoa! I'm surprised there are no reviews for this place yet! I was in Maui for about a week...and I think I visited this place every day! haha It's kinda hard to explain what Guri Guri is...but my friend who is a Maui local says it's ice-cream/ice milk --- SOOOO good...and Cheap! It comes in Strawberry and Pineapple flavors. I've had four to five scoops each time. Haha..it's cool watching them scoop...they are quick! --Must have when you visit Maui! *drool*

    (5)
  • Waynele Y.

strawberry guriguri is the best!! this is the only place left that makes guriguri. when i come to maui, i have to eat one every day. brings me back to the hanabata days when i used to eat guriguri at goodie-goodie drive in on king street. for those of you who don't live on maui and want a guriguri fix, the samurai ice cakes will hit the spot.

2 scoops for a dolla holla. cheap tropical sherbet. strawberry or pineapple. strawberry tastes like bubblegum.

  • Frances F.

You can't buy guri guri anywhere else but Maui so it's a must-try. On a hot day, Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is the perfect place to visit. My friend brought back home frozen guri guri and I thought what in the world is this? To my surprise it tasted really goooood and refreshing. Definitely had to visit the shop before leaving Maui. It's like ice cream/shave ice/colored snow/yogurt gooodness! I LOOOOVE the strawberry flavor. They offer 2 flavors: Strawberry and Pineapple. Bring cash because they accept cash only, but you won't need more than $3 to satisfy your sweeet cravings.

  • Michael C.

It's GOODY GOODY @ Guri Guri!! On my recent Maui trip, I actually had the chance to visit the Guri Guri shop twice. The first was the requisite have-to-go-to-Tasaka-Guri-Guri-because-I'm-on-vacation reason, but the second visit was merely to have some respite from the intense heat that somehow shrouded Maui on our last day. I think the way to describe Guri Guri is that its a hybrid of ice cream and sherbet. And its oh so goody goody, especially on a hot day for sure. NOTES: 1. Cash Only 2. Free parking at Maui Mall 3. Two flavors available: Strawberry and Pineapple. 4. Sold by the Scoop: 2, 3, 4, or 5. I actually had 5 scoops on my second visit since it was so unbearably HOT. Well, that's only partially true, I was "strongly encouraged" to have the five scoops. In any case, at least I was able to try both the strawberry and pineapple flavors. I prefer the strawberry, but hey, its just my own personal preference. BOTTOM LINE: Guri Guri is just plain GOOD. And very refreshing during a Maui heatwave for sure.

  • John M.

Obviously tons of people like this place but sadly it wasn't yummy to my family. We all took a bite or two and threw the rest away. The taste is very fake and we were expecting something more fresh. Just very artificial not good to our pallet. The ladies who were serving were very nice so this review is based solely on the taste of the pineapple and strawberry sherbet.

    (1)
  • Lisa S.

I can't really describe the taste, but Guri Guri is very sweet, light, and milky. Imagine eating fruity cereal milk flavored sorbet. I know people are going to hate me for this, but Guri Guri and Samurai Ice are very similar! Guri Guri offers two flavors: strawberry and pineapple. Choose the pineapple! And by the way, this place is soooo inexpensive. A scoop of Guri Guri is $1.20 while a two-scoop serving is $1.80. This shop is near the airport, so try it at least once!

  • Fran C.

Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is a local institution! This place will never disappoint! For you non-Kama'aina's..........go to the Maui Mall & get a taste of this delicious treat! Go now! No really,........you won't regret it! What is a Guri Guri? Well, the best way to describe it is........ Guri Guri is a frozen dessert, and it is a cross between sherbet, and ice cream. The Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is locally owned, and they serve up just two flavors - Strawberry & Pineapple. Both are good, but I personally like the Strawberry better. Not only is this dessert the perfect item on an extremely HOT day, but the dessert is light, creamy, & not overly sweet! As I entered the store this afternoon, I picked up (2) scopes of Strawberry Guri Guri.......and you know what I paid? Just $1.20! Yes gangies! Just a buck & some change, I got two mini scopes of this delicious treat! As I sat on a bench outside to eat my Guri Guri........all I could think about in this unbearable heat was.........Ummmmmmmmm, coooooool & creamy! Ummmmmmmmmm, cooooooool & creamy! Chance 'em gang! No can go wrong!

Guri Guri is always at the top of my list of things to get when I visit Maui. They're conveniently located at Maui Mall, behind Longs Drugs. It's a small, hole in the wall shop that serves strawberry or pineapple-flavored Guri Guri. They only accept cash; no cards. I enjoy this Maui favorite but the portions are really tiny. They sell frozen quarts to take on the plane with you but they say it's only good for about 2 hours. It's perfect if you're flying to another island, but sorry mainlanders, your Guri Guri won't make it across the Pacific Ocean.

    (4)
  • Alexandra P.

If you want to try something uniquely local while on your trip to Maui. Than this is the spot. Guri Guri has been serving scoops of its frozen dessert for close to 100 years. Yes, some will say it is artificial and way to sweet. I say forget them and indulge.

    (4)
  • Lori L.

You gotta stop by Tasaka Guri Guri Shop for their unique guri guri, a cross between superfine shave ice and sherbet. Soft and sweet. Slightly milky. It melts as soon as it touches your tongue. Just two flavors, pineapple or strawberry or mixed. This is a small kid time favorite that makes your smile.

    (3)
  • Joseph D.

Very cheap. Only two flavors. Would avoid the strawberry which was very artificial tasting but the pineapple was great. 4 stars for the pineapple, 2 stars for the strawberry, so 3 overall.

Guri guri was recommended to me by a friends who grew up on the islands. It's a little hole in the wall that was a bit of a challenge to find. Both my husband and I had the strawberry flavor. Very yummy...and well worth $1.20 for a nice treat.

I found this place lacking flavor, I expected robust natural flavors of pineapple and strawberry, but instead I felt as though I was tasting strawberry medicine. I must admit, my expectations were set rather high due to the overwhelming raving reviews. I am honest with my reviews and I understand everyone has a different palate, but this place was not for me. I personally enjoyed the shaved ice. Don't let my review sway your decision on visiting this place, but be warned... it may not live to your expectations.

I've heard of the infamous Guri growing on Oahu. It was the oh-so-special treat you would have on Maui. I told myself that I'd try it but always managed to get distracted and forget about it. Not this time! Our GPS aka my phone had us going around in circles trying to locate it, but it's tucked away in the shopping center that also houses Whole Foods. It's a little crack seed kind of place that when I went, everyone just ordered their guri guri. I was dumb and didn't read the reviews prior to going so like a complete newb, I asked "What flavors do you have?" I shall save you from future embarrassing moments. They serve strawberry and pineapple. The scoops are on the smaller side but 3 scoops fit perfectly into my little cup that cost less than $2. Texture wise, we found ourselves at a loss to describe it. It's not ice cream, not quite sherbet but the flavors reminded me of ordering a shave ice with vanilla ice cream and drinking the bottom melted ice cream and shave ice flavors. I loved it! It was perfect on a hot day and I could have easily ordered 3 more scoops. It's a nostalgic place that holds the hearts of those on Maui. I'll definitely stop by the next time I'm in town. :) #18 of 100 2015

I actually like this place! Yes, only two flavors, no tasting, cash only, but crazy cheap! It looks like it's been around for ages and for someone who grew up here, I wouldn't be surprised if they walked in here feeling nostalgic. $1.20 for two scoops $1.80 for three $2.35 for four $2.85 for five $5.50 for a quart Pineapple does not taste like pineapple almost like peach but it has that tarty flavor profile that I'm a fan of. While the strawberry, well, it tastes like bubblegum but not bad bubblegum, it's good. I don't know about you but I think the trick in fully enjoying this SHERBET is eating both flavors together. The combination of the two is such a treat in your mouth. Mmmhmm...doooo it!!!

Love the STRAWBERRY GURI GURI~ they're *CASH ONLY* though Buy the Maui Chips (clear bag w/ red label) and dip it in the guri guri...it's kinda like dipping fries into ice cream if you're into that salty & sweet kind of thing...my friend told me about it Go here. Really cheap. Also, Maui is hot so it's even better.

A nice refereshing treat even at 9:40am !!! You can't get 2 scoops of anything anywhere for $1.20!!! I'm partial to the coconut. But strawberry is good too !!

Same as I remembered when I was growing up in the late 80's. Nostalgia sets in when you take your 1st. Spoon full. Memories come flooding in from every direction. My grandparents took us "my siblings and I" to enjoy a few scoops of Guri-Guri on a hot Hawaiian day. I now take my 2 boys there to create their own memories.

All you naysayers....hate away! Been having Tasaka Guri-Guri since I was wee high...and it still brings back the best of times. Overly sweet possibly....artificial-tasting possibly....overpriced possibly...ah, who cares? Guri-Guri has been a staple on Maui for decades! Family owned & operated since the early 70's. You think this place would still be around if their sweet treat was that crappy? I think not! Love it or hate it...Tasaka will be here for a good long while. On my short trip home, I stopped by for Guri-Guri EVERY DAY. Simple, just a 3 scoop - 2 pineapple, 1 strawberry. Less than $2. Yep, still comes in a tiny Dixie cup with a tiny wooden spoon. The wooden spoon is KEY I think when you enjoy Guri- Guri. It's like whipping cream in a copper bowl. Very important. I don't think I've ever had Guri-Guri from Tasaka without that wooden spoon. And on the occasions when I did take a quart home and used a regular spoon? Not quite the same experience. If this stuff could make it back to Las Vegas I would take quarts of it home in a heartbeat. But without the use of dry ice (illegal on planes) Guri-Guri will only stay frozen a max of 2 1/2 hours. That takes anyone out of interisland travel out of the mix. So sad. I continue to love Tasaka Guri-Guri to this day. Every trip back home I will make sure to take a stop by and get my taste of nostalgia back. Always imitated but never duplicated, Guri Guri how I love you so. Still a goody-goody to me! But dammit...I still miss that grape drink.

Have you ever had Guri Guri? If I had to explain it to someone who's never had it and wants to know what it is: here's my thoughts: Cold, creamy, flavorful---almost like a mix between ice cream and sherbet. Kind of like a sorbet.... Oh it's delightful. They have two flavors: Strawberry and Pineapple. I'm a berry girl so it was all about the strawberry. And it was gone in a flash. Guri Guri is a quaint, cute little place and the treats are delicious Go try some today!

Hidden Hawaiian gem inside the rather sad and sleepy Maui Mall. Never tried guri guri so decided to try a taste of Hawaii. And was not disappointed in this low key hole in the wall. 2 flavors only (strawberry and pineapple) but it so hit the spot on a hot and humid day. Had a feeling it was going to be a hit given all the happy adults and kids eating their guri guri around the mall. Bottom line: Slightly slushy sherbet-like Hawaiian delight. And given some of the crazy prices in Hawaii for food, quite a deal ($1.20 for 2 scoops, $1.80 for three). Definitely a place to try once for foodies new to Maui.

  • Soo H.

Delicious and inexpensive. It is tucked inside an outdoor shopping complex. Two flavors available- strawberry and pineapple. My husband and I enjoyed both! We only got two scoops each but could have easily finished four scoops each! The size of this ice cream/sherbert is a bit petite so ordering 4-5 scoops wouldn't be a bad idea :) Worth a visit!

  • Lisa M.

I have to admit that I've tried to make guri guri at home and I thought it was pretty good. Fast forward to our Maui trip and our consistent/daily splurge at Tasaka proves that there is non other than Tasaka Guri Guri! Holy cow, it's sherbet like consistency and it's perfectly creamy strawberry flavor makes you want to order 10 scoops since its so darn inexpensive. I think it was two scoops for $1.80? Too bad there aren't more locations on Maui or in the state! This is a hit! The location is a little odd since its in the shopping center sort of in back or next to whole foods. There's also only one bench to sit on. Regardless, this place is a must if your on Maui!!

Maui for the day, how can you skip Guri Guri? You can't. 2 scoops was the perfect afternoon snack--not too much to ruin dinner, and just enough to make you happy. Tasaka's is a Mom n Pop style place, and the costs are so unbeatable, you can't go wrong. It was pineapple and strawberry kind of day, and 3 cups of 2 scoops for less than 5 bucks....makes the guri guri taste even better.

This place is simple, direct, and tasty. If you are expecting the real lush flavors of pineapple and strawberry - don't get your hopes up. This is a creamy sorbet that has a unique flavor and for those who have been eating it for years, it is nostalgic. My favorite is the pineapple. For a unique mixture of flavors I get 2 scoops of pineapple and 1 scoop of strawberry.

Date of Visit: 1/25/14 *Day Trip to Maui! #mkLOVEntures After just having Stillwell's cream horns, our next stop was for something even sweeter but more refreshing, so my wife and I had decided to take the short drive to Taska Guri Guri. It is located in a strip mall next to Longs and the Movie theaters. What did we order? Pineapple and Strawberry Sherbert. 2 scoops only costs $1.20!!! I loved the pineapple more than the strawberry. I seriously and honestly think this would give Samurai a run for its money. I didn't think it was possible but I may give Tasaka the upper hand against Samurai and I'm a huge Samurai fan. Will you be back? A perfect dessert after lunch. We'll be back next time we fly over from Oahu.

  • Danielle C.

I thought this place would blow my mind based on the reviews but I thought the dessert was just okay. It was cheap ($1.20 for two small scoops) but you get the scoops in extremely tiny cups... Although I guess the same thing would probably be like $5 in say San Francisco so I shouldn't complain too much. Also this is the only dessert place I've ever been to where there are only two flavors. I guess everyone really likes these flavors... The strawberry flavor was not good in my opinion - it tasted like bubblegum! No hint of strawberry. ECH! The pineapple flavor was pretty decent. I should have just gotten two scoops both pineapple. Also this place is cash only.

If I could give this place more stars, I definitely would. My dad and his family were raised here in Maui and ever since I could remember they would always bring us here for a nice treat after the beach or a long day. We visited again from the mainland after several years and we had to stop by the first day because my brother and I were talking about it the whole flight here. They have only two flavors (strawberry and pineapple) which are sooo good for such reasonable prices. They serve it to you in Dixie cups depending on how many scoops you get with a small wooden spoon. Some people might dislike that but I find it to be unique and enjoyable. I wish they were to move to the mainland but while we are here for vacation, we will be coming often! Service is nice too. I LOVE TASAKA GURI GURI :)

  • Lala K.

Only two flavors, strawberry and pineapple, but who cares! Simplicity at it's best. There is something so addictingly good about their ice cream. This place never gets old and there is no need for them to change a thing. True definition of mom and pop shop, and this place has become an iconic part of Maui. How can anyone say anything bad about this place?!

  • Chanelle T.

Best treat to have! Flavors and consistency are original, something you can't get anywhere else! Price is extremely reasonable and perfect for a hot sunny day!

    (5)
  • Michael T.

2 flavors: pineapple and strawberry. 1-5 scoops of either flavor or mix it up with the two. Pretty simple. It's super cheap. I'd never had or heard of guri guri before, so of course that's our 2nd stop after leaving the airport. OK, the temperature and humidity also had something to do with it, but the proximity to OGG couldn't hurt either. I really enjoyed the texture and consistency of it, but it was a bit too sweet for me. My wife enjoyed the flavors though and she's the sweet tooth.

Good cool sorbet for a snack on a hot maui day. they have 2 flavors-strawberry and pineapple. both tastes artificial and looks very bright and colorful. good texture and cheap prices. 3 scoops in a waxed cup for $1.60.

Tasaka Guri Guri is a MUST when we go to visit our relatives on Maui. We love the Strawberry guri guri here! It's very light and on the icy side. They are very reasonable!!!! I think 3 scoops is under $2. Whenever we come here, the lines are never crazy and the staff are very quick and efficient! They are located in Maui Mall so parking isn't a problem at all. I also heard that they can pack it so that you can take back home to the neighbor islands. We haven't done that yet, but it's nice to know it's an option!

    (5)
  • Jeannet S.

I really like this place to take my kids too. It's easy, cheap and convenient. I wish they took ATM cards and that they had more flavors, but it's really good overall. Will definitely visit again.

Sorbet and ice cream fusion. So delish and like no other. Portions are small so get 2 scoops or 3 or 4. They have 2 flavors strawberry and pinapple. Can't decide get both! Cash only.

Good stuff! They only have two flavors. Pineapple and strawberry. I had the pineapple. You can get a mix of both, If you like. You should stop by and enjoy this icy treat!

31 Yelps Review Challenge: 18/31 Before I went to Maui, a friend had highlighted Tasaka Guri Guri Shop as a must visit. I trust my friend's judgement when it comes to food, but I found myself a bit perplexed after having made the pit stop. Nestled in a strip mall, Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is modest and minimalist. You come here for the Guri Guri. They serve your scoops in a dixie cup and you eat off one of those wooden spoon. What exactly is Guri Guri? It reminded me of a sherbet. But honestly, I'm not sure what all the hype is about.

    (2)
  • Alyssa M.

Great local place to visit. They have been in business for years. It isn't really ice cream... Or sherbet.... Not really sure how to explain it but you either love it or hate it. I always go for the 2 scoop mix (pineapple and strawberry). Just remember that it is cash only!

Guri Guri is a Maui landmark. LOL One of those places you need to go when you're on Maui. Smart family that runs this place were never interested in expanding ...makes it more unique. Guri Guri ...how to explain...is like a thick yogurt with a milky taste added to each flavor (strawberry and pineapple). Get it mixed. Located in Maui Mall (a renovation so desperately needed at this mall) next to the Pet Store.

    (5)
  • Ana C.

Love this stuff. Total hole in the wall, only accepts cash, only two flavors, but delicious and totally worth the hassle! The guri guri is creamy and flavorful and has fresh tasting. At just 120 for two scoops, bring a bag full of change and your appetite!

    (5)
  • Shawn T.

Eating their strawberry guriguri is one of the best perks of being on Maui, I never get tired of it and neither should you. For 60 cents per scoop, how can this place get anything less than 5 stars?

    (5)
  • Tina S.

Just tasted like flavored frozen milk. Not my style, but worth a try. It's close to the airport and 1.20 for two scoops. They only have two flavors: strawberry and pineapple. The strawberry doesn't really taste like strawberry. It's not quite sherbert or ice cream-- it's somewhere in the middle hybrid.

    (2)
  • Maui Earth R.

The best guri guri!!! I've been coming to Tasaka's since the 1970's and it's always been a family favorite. The prices are reasonable and the guri guri's are ono! Glad to see some small businesses like this have been able to survive as Maui has grown.

    (5)
  • Sterling H.

I remember my Grandmother taking us here for guri guri with azuki beans back in the years 1969-74. When I came back to to see her in '87, they no longer had the beans, and now they never seem to offer them. It's too bad, because although the sherbet is four-star, the beans make it 5-star.

    (4)
  • Joyce Z.

We found the guri guri years ago and wish it was closer to W Maui so we can stop by more often vs. when we're coming from the airport. Guri guri is similar to a light sorbet/sherbert and is super refreshing on a hot day. With a choice of two flavors (pineapple and strawberry), you can mix and match any way you want it. These mini scoops are served up in a unpretentious solo cup and a wooden spoon but anyway you look at it, it is a steal! If you're making a drive to come out for it, call and double check the day they are closed. Last year I thought it was Sunday even though Yelp hours has it as Saturday.

  • Eric O.

  • Jon Y.

  • Hattori H.

Cash only.

  • Tiffany A.

Yum yum! Love the mix of flavors!!! And the prices can't be beat... $1-$3 for 1-4 scoops!

    (4)
  • Brent K.

Service was fast and this place is cheap! I got 4 scoops, but it wasn't enough. I was craving more! Went with 2 strawberry and 2 pineapple. This place is a must for any visit to Maui!

Tasaka Guri Guri is an awesome sorbet/ice cream frozen treat. 2 flavors to choose from. Strawberry or Pineapple. Purchase them by the scoop or by the quart!

    (5)
  • Erin C.

I couldn't wait to try this place after reading all the positive reviews. This place did not disappoint. I had a scoop of each flavor and LOVED it! It tastes kind of like frozen soda mixed with sweetened condensed milk. In other words, totally awesome! I wish they had more locations around the island.

  • Paras B.

This was a little yummy place we found thanx to fellow yelpers. It has only two flavors pineapple and strawberry. Both are light and delish. We could not believe the price. $1.10 for 2 small scoops..really! I think tomorrow we will try a few extra scoops. Mahalo

  • Tom H.

Yum!

this is a classic treat here in Maui, strawberry or pineapple the only two flavors they serve you can also get it mixed , Its a local favorite an believe me you have to try it. there prices are reasonable they have 2-5 scoops an the portions are 3-4oz scoops, they also sell it by the quarts

    (5)
  • Esther C.

Yummmm!

If you want to try something uniquely local while on your trip to Maui. Than this is the spot. Guri Guri has been serving scoops of its frozen dessert for close to 100 years. Yes, some will say it is artificial and way to sweet. I say forget them and indulge.

Very cheap. Only two flavors. Would avoid the strawberry which was very artificial tasting but the pineapple was great. 4 stars for the pineapple, 2 stars for the strawberry, so 3 overall.

5 generations of my family continue to enjoy guri guri ice cream! It's a tradition to stop here as many times as possible when visiting Maui.

Guri guri was recommended to me by a friends who grew up on the islands. It's a little hole in the wall that was a bit of a challenge to find. Both my husband and I had the strawberry flavor. Very yummy...and well worth $1.20 for a nice treat.

Cash only.

  • Amy Y.

I tried it! Checked!

    (5)
  • Nat W.

Anyways, we liked the guri guri so much that we made our own theme song to it guri guri.... guri guri!

  • Mark K.

    (5)
  • Julie D.

    (5)
  • Arthur Y.

It's fun to see little kids and old tutu-wahine and tutu-kane (grandma and grandpas) come to Tasaka's for a quick, reasonable, and cheap ice cream treat!

what the HECK? i had a bite two bites three bites four bites five, six, seven, eight (we got like 3 scoops or something) and i still don't get it it's ridiculously chemically and fake tasting i can't even tell what flavors they're trying to emulate maybe it's because i didn't grow up eating it but i'm definitely not a fan

    (1)

Enjoy!

  • Maui Earth R.

The best guri guri!!! I've been coming to Tasaka's since the 1970's and it's always been a family favorite. The prices are reasonable and the guri guri's are ono! Glad to see some small businesses like this have been able to survive as Maui has grown.

I remember my Grandmother taking us here for guri guri with azuki beans back in the years 1969-74. When I came back to to see her in '87, they no longer had the beans, and now they never seem to offer them. It's too bad, because although the sherbet is four-star, the beans make it 5-star.

  • Alysha K.

This place is my first stop after landing in Maui, my last stop before returning to the airport, with plenty of visits in between!

its like Shokudos Honey Toast, you never fully understand how something so simple could be so amazing!

  • Ryan M.

  • Kehau S.

  • Lani R.

This is a local favorite! I always go here when I visit maui nothing fancy just yummy . If you want to experience local old school style ice cream this is it. Its not ice cream its like more of a gelato. When I lived on maui I also brought home to honolulu!

Very cheap, today there was a special and each scoop was $0.40. Obviously great price but scoops are tiny. Place could benefit from more flavors. Guri guri not for everyone.

Wanna see some locals? Come here. Truly the only area where we saw locals on our trip. The strawberry is much much better than the pineapple, but at 80 cents a scoop, try them both and then decide. We came here twice in a three day Maui trip. It's that good.

Delicious sherbert and at a great price. I definitely liked strawberry more than the pineapple flavor. A must try if you wanted to take a day off from having hawaiian shaved ice!

MUST TRY!

Awesome.

    (4)

Good luck!

  • D K.

always been a family favorite. the price is amazingly reasonable. we all grew up on it. it's good :) it's located on the west end of Maui Mall.

  • Dara V.

  • Lacey B.

    (3)
  • Angela K.

Where else can you still find 2 scoops of ice cream for $1.10?! Even cheaper than Thrifty Ice Cream. Simple and tasty - what else can you ask for? No lines, quick service, and a happy tummy after a scoop of strawberry + pineapple! YUM!

Can't wait!

  • David J.

  • Kay K.

Note that 2 scoops is a size of a dixie cup so I definitely recommend getting 3 scoops or more. Also, you don't need to choose between the Pineapple and Strawberry. You can get them both!

  • Travis M.

Love this place. 2 scoops of strawberry, one scoop of pineapple served by a cute little old man. Definately a go to place when in Maui.

Always a favorite when on Maui. Guri Guri is like ice cream layered with evaporated milk...it is really good- if you like creamy desserts. I recommend the double scoop combo-one scoop strawberry and one scoop pineapple.

The first time had this ice cream i was like wow this is good. The flavors are really good. To bad they dont have one on Oahu, Hawaii. The best time to eat this si when you are on your way back home from the beach or from the park. I hope to go back there a get more.

    (4)
  • Ling K.

I can say "No" to almost anything... yes even to La Mason du Chocolate, BUT.... I can't say no to Guri Guri!!! Every time I visit Maui, I HAVE to eat it!!! It's like an ice cream/sherbet.

  • Tiana G.

This place is a local favorite. I remember loving this stuff when I was a kid and it's still delicious years later. Family owned and operated, you need to go to this if you're visiting instead of going to overpriced touristy frozen treat shops. Try the real thing!

I first went there over 50 years ago. Today the Guri Guri is just as good.

    (5)

    (3)
  • John L.

mmm love those pineapple one better than strawberry. Came the first time they were already closed. Second time just before we're off from Maui, came by had 2 scoops. He said "which kind, mix?" we just nodded. Yumm love the pineapple.

    (4)
  • Becca M.

Loves it.

  • Mare B.

  • kai m.

Inexpensive, ONO, fantastic on a hot Maui day... Tasaka always hits the spot and always seems to be a magnet for me whenever I venture to Central Maui on the way Upcountry. Dis place is da winnahs

  • Brian A.

Pronounced "goodie-goodie" by many locals, this is the epicenter of Maui desserts. Not quite shave ice, not quite sherbert, and not quite ice cream. It's great on a hot Hawaiian day and is a must try if you're ever on Maui.

    (4)
  • Ciara R.

  • Aloha K.

Not really.

However you pronounce it, Guri Guri is great. I take my grandson there and for $1.50 each we have a real treat. I like mixed and he likes strawberry.

We first discovered this place when I was a kid on a family vacation, probably about 30 years ago! My husband and I went back a few years ago and its even better then I remember it! And it seems like they haven't even changed the prices in the last 30 years! I could eat this stuff every day! Not to be missed!

*drool*

strawberry guriguri is the best!! this is the only place left that makes guriguri. when i come to maui, i have to eat one every day. brings me back to the hanabata days when i used to eat guriguri at goodie-goodie drive in on king street. for those of you who don't live on maui and want a guriguri fix, the samurai ice cakes will hit the spot.
