On the recommendation of a colleague, my friends and I tried Las PInatas in Kahului on Maui. I had two chili rejenos and my friends each ordered the chimichanga. We also ordered a plate of nachos (with grilled pork, beans, lettuce, and sour cream) to share, but we were pretty much too full from our orders to enjoy the nachos. The food's decent and the prices are pretty good (ten bucks for the two-rejeno plate with beans and rice; eight bucks for the fancied-up nachos). Extras cost extra (sour cream and guacamole), but there is a pretty nice salsa bar for dressing up your orders. A very impressive assortment of Mexican beers is available. When you're on vacation, you can't eat every meal in a fancy restaurant. For those more casual meals, you could do a lot worse than Las Pinatas.

I'm giving Pinatas 3 stars because Fernando's at Maui Marketplace is way better. The food is good, but just not as good.

Been here two different times and loved it both times. The marinated pork is tasty as well as the fish. Not very much seating.

It was perfect after hours of hiking in the hills. Sometimes you just want a great big plate of cheese, beans, sauce and meat, and Pinatas definitely delivers! I got the Chile Relenos plate for about $10 and it was very tasty and filled me up like no other meal I've had on Maui. Great for cheap, dirty, Mexican food!

We stop here everytime we visit Maui. Always great food and service. Before our flight home recently I had the "Kitchen Sink" Burrito and was able to finish the whole thing.

Why I love Las Pinata's: 1. Beans and rice with chunky salsa (their homemade, simple and yummy). 2. Beef tamales 3. Pollo Asado served any way (soft taco, salad, burrito) 4. Friendly staff, serving consistently good food. 5. All the pinatas hanging from the ceiling are great to look at while you are waiting for your food. 6. Locally owned. 7. They utilize local produce growers

thank you, god, for pinatas! during our holiday on maui, we drove in from our condo at aina nalu in lahaina to kahului, hoping to have lunch at manana garage. eep! manana garage, to our dismay, was closed, as in permanently. not being from the island, we quickly went on yelp via our two smartphones (thank you god, for htc and rim!) and found pinatas. we both ordered kitchen sink burritos--one carne asada and one fish. we weren't able to take even a bite until about half an hour or more later bcs we took them to go on our drive to ulupalakua to visit tedeschi winery. but oooh, the wait was worth it! we hungrily devoured the carne asada burrito, which was good even tho it was not hot anymore. the beef was really tender and the other fillings were clearly homemade in that good way, not that i-don't-know-how-to-cook way. let me tell you--if my sweetie and i had only our normal appetites on, instead of our growling starving ones, that burrito was so chockful of yummy goodness that we would have been sated sharing the one cause it was so big. for those of you who live on oahu and are familiar with torito's in international marketplace and in market city, las pinatas's kitchen sink is a notch or two better than torito's crazy burrito. the fish burrito is what we ate when we got back to our condo later that day. (normally, we'd worry about food safety, but ulupalakua is quite cool, climate-wise, and we made sure to have the air con mostly aimed at the car floor). it was just as good, if not slightly better, than the carne asada. the fish tasted fresh, not frozen, and there were goodly chunks of it in there. we tried three types of salsa--the tomatillo, the regular, and the habanero. honestly, the burritos didn't need the salsas, but i'd say help yourself generously to them--they're homemade by the restaurant's mama and totally ono! please, las pinatas...may god keep you from going the way manana grill did...we'd love to visit you next time we're on maui!

Unexpected places with specifically vegan items on their menus always give me a little thrill. This is not fine dining; it's situated in a shopping center and as others have mentioned it's fast food-style decor, though it's festive (in a mildly garish way) because of all the pinatas hanging from the ceiling (from deranged child firefighter to purple dinosaur of unknown species to the Republican elephant and Democrat donkey). We ordered two "vegan kitchen sink burritos" (the server thought he was so clever, joking with us "oh, you want extra meat and extra dairy on that, right?"). We also got a small chips and salsa bar, which turned out to be 1/2 price for "happy hour". The burritos were large, filling, and very tasty, packed with rice, two kinds of beans (black and refried), guacamole, salsa, lettuce, and probably some more veggies I'm forgetting. Chips were good, but not fabulous (though, especially at 1/2 price, who am I to complain?). Overall tasty, inexpensive food with clear vegan markings on the menu = happy Emily.

Best Mexican I've had in Hawaii. Wish I could take the restaurant back w me to Honolulu. At first look the kitchen sink carne asada burrito looked too big but once I started eating I housed it. Got plenty of cilantro and tried 3 salsas. The best was tomatillo which was surprising since my Korean tastebuds usu like the spiciest one. Anyhow guess I just gotta be satisfied w Taco Bell once I get back to town. Nothing wrong w that.

Excellent place for all your tex-mex basics! I'm especially a fan of their kitchen sink burritos. It's also pretty affordable for Maui.

Food was not satisfying for the price! If you like microwaved burritos go here. If you like good Mexican food go to amigos or Fernando's they r way better.

Great tasting Mexican. Since my family is from Phoenix we've had our share of great Mexican. This place was pretty authentic. Loved the breakfast menu. We all enjoyed it. The service was the best.

My husband and I were starving once we got off the plane and we stumbled across this place tucked away in a shopping center. It's just your average little restaurant, but the food was really good!! I'm not sure if people giving such poor reviews are just used to Taco Bell quality food or what? We had no problems with our food. In fact, we craved it throughout the week, but were all the way in Lahaina. I ordered a hard and soft chicken taco combo meal, it came with rice and refried beans and my husband got the enchilada meal and enjoyed his meal as well. The staff was also very friendly.

  • Stacy H.

Great little place with quick service. The lady taking our order was super friendly and was dancing to music in between. LOL Decent food and nice personalized touches like comic strips on each of the tables. They also sale pinatas there.

  • Ling W.

If you don't mind flavorless slop with marginally friendly service and expensive food, you might like this place. First red flag, it smelled better on the outside than on the inside. The cheese enchiladas were mushy and bad tasting-how is that even possible? Guac was bland, chips were store bought. My husband said his taco was decent. I couldn't finish my food. Beware gluten-free people, their corn tortillas are some flour blend, sadly discovered after I started eating.

Last meal in Hawaii. We were sick and tired of mixed plates, mac salad, and seafood. So what's the complete opposite? A carne asada burrito. Made like in Socal with meat, guacamole, and cilantro, it tastes right. Even the meat quality might be better and the guacamole more fresh but it was the smallest burrito I've seen from a shop. $8 gets you a medium sized tortilla of about 5-6" long and not fully stuffed. Maybe the workers need the positive vibe from a mixed plate place because the lady who took our order looked like she hated her job... and life.

  • Jeremy W.

I walked up to the counter & noticed everything they were making was being cooked in a Microwave.... I asked the guy at the counter if I could get anything not made or cooked in a Microwave & he said just the hard shell tacos are fried & not cooked in the Microwave, but the ingredients that go in the tacos are heated up in the Microwave... What??? No wonder people complain about the food being tasteless & bland. Cooking food in a Microwave kills all the vitamins, & nutrients in your food. They call themselves an authentic mexican food restaurant, I think not. There is nothing fresh about heating food up in a Microwave! I was disgusted & walk away, & I will never go back there!!!!

  • Jacklynn R.

Really good hard shell chicken tacos and the rice is absolutely perfect. Great place for some quick but tasty Mexican carryout. Decent little salsa bar too.

Wish I could give 4 and a half stars. Mexican food on Maui? Oh yea...and good Mexican, too. Located right off a very busy main street which happens to be en route to the airport, it is a must-stop for locals and tourists alike. Reasonable (Maui) prices, super cold beer and really full flavored, authentic Mexican food. Don't miss: Hand formed tacos which can be ordered a la carte. The fajitas - any protein as all are tasty - are served with rice and beans and the salsa bar (tomatillo, fresh cilantro and onions, salsa rosa, etc) becomes a bonus. Chips and salsa are extra so I skip them to save room for the really good stuff. Owner is super-nice, too. Ideal: vegetarians, kid-friendly, fast, inexpensive, convenient to the airport/kahului errands. Bonus: Considering the busy location, parking is decent. Ambiance: Basic, no frills with cute pinatas hanging from the ceiling.

OMG. Other than the fact that my burrito went soggy on the plane, when I finally got to eat this at 12:45 pm, approx. two hours after ordering, I was still full when my plane landed at 6:30 pm that night. The fresh fish, kitchen sink burrito was so awesome; it barely needed any salsa. (Luckily I had made my own out of raw corn and fresh salsa at the hotel. I ain't kiddin' either.) It was so fast and efficient when ordering. My partner commented how clean the kitchen was; the bathroom, while hidden, was equally as clean. The burritos were over 22 bucks but were huge, and I think I gained five pounds after imbibing. But seriously, it was so delicious, and messy, and every thin dude around us on the plane was so JEALOUS. But I didn't care. I'd been stuck with the disgusting curried what-which on the way down; I'd paid my dues. So, if nothing else, go here for take away before you board, but for crying out loud, give yourself at least TWO hours at the airport. Chances are your gate will be at the very end, and Maui isn't about to speed up and get Nexus any time soon. (We almost learned the hard way). And bonus! Only my water bottle leaked through my entire bag, but the burritos passed all triple inspections when hidden in the bf's hoodie! Yay!

  • CJ G.

Bland and boring. Refried beans only; no black, no whole pinto. Flour tortillas only; no whole wheat, no spinach, no corn. Flavorless salsas. There has got to be better Mexican food on Maui.

Stopped in for lunch before we dropped our daughter off at the airport. We are from San Diego so we know great Mexican food and weren't expecting the food to be as good as it was. My husband and daughter both had the #2 enchilada, taco, rice and bean combo one had cheese enchilada and the other had chicken they were very happy with their lunches. I had the bean cheese burrito and it was good also. The service was good and the restaurant was clean. I would recommend this to anyone looking for good Mexican food on the island.

    (4)
  • Kimberly H.

This place is not bad, it's not a 5 star restaurant but a decent go to if you want quick good Mexican food. They have a salsa bar, the place is clean and bright, and the service is self-serve, no one waiting in you. No free chips and salsa though.

    (4)
  • Raquel C.

Very good mexican food. Me and my husband stopped by before going to the airport after reading yelp's review. Food made by mexicans. I think thats the best part and they are really nice people. I went to fred's mexican food in kihei and it sucked!!! I ordered the chimichangas and my husband ordered tacos and we loved everything. I really liked the salsa bar. Thats awesome! Highly recommend it!

We stopped here for some breakfast burritos to satiate us on our drive to Hana. I got a chorizo burrito with beans (I'm a bean addict). it was tasty and some condiments from their salsa bar perfected it.

Authentic Mexican Food at its Best! Love the Kitchen Sink Burrito 3 Star Location & Atmoshere but Five Star Food

    (4)
  • Seth H.

We've had Burrito's here before and enjoyed them. Today my wife ordered a "Garden Salad" expecting a variety of vegetables. Instead it consisted of only iceberg lettuce with a few diced tomatoes on top, an unappetizing rip off for $7.00. Stick with their standard Mexican dishes if you want to have an enjoyable meal here.

  • Kathy G.

On our way to the airport, we stopped for a quick lunch. The location wasn't anything fancy or scenic, but the place was packed. The decor was pretty cheesy, almost cute. A couple of cheap tacos and some chips and salsa seemed like a good idea. The food was cheap, the staff was friendly so we sat down with our order. It was surprizingly fantastic. Delicious, fresh ingredients, with a nice tasty Mexican spice. The salsa was nice and hot, just like it should be. I sure wished I would have found this place earlier.

If you like Mexican food, this place is a good spot for it. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican, but I enjoyed my meal nonetheless.

What happened? This place is usually pretty good. Today, they messed up my Mexican salad. The shredded chicken was full of skin. More skin than chicken. Slimy and gross. Couldn't finish it. Absolutely disgusting. Won't order that again. Formerly a Piñata's fan, I felt they should know...So I mentioned it to the counter staff and she started communicating it to the help in Spanish. What she did't know was that I SPEAK Spanish and they sort I'd shrugged their shoulders and said, "Huh! White people" as if skin on shredded chicken was a normal thing and I was being unreasonable. I told them I couldn't finish the food and threw it away. No apologies. No offers to fix me anything else I had to go eat at Wendy's to satisfy my hungriest, and that's saying something.

This was my last meal on Maui. I ordered the fish taco plate. There was more than enough food on the plate, and the service was friendly. The two stars is because of it's complete blandness / flavorlessness. I had to load the dish down with onions, salsa, and lots and lots of salt.

Okay. Always looking for food Mexican food in Hawaii and this one happens to be on Maui. Las Pinatas was our stop for dinner before heading home to Oahu. I ordered the combination plate with a cheese enchilada and a chicken taco. My cheese enchilada was super cheesy and the chicken taco was tasty. My husband ate the chile rellenos plate. He said his chiles are normally red but these were green but still good. This place reminded him of his favorite place in California. You order your food, choose your hot sauce, salsa, and choose your seat. The food was really good. Even the beans and rice were authentic. And you know it's authentic when the people working behind the counter are really Mexican. The prices were reasonable and the portions were big. Pretty decent place to get some Mexican grinds.

  • Tiffany L.

Hubby and I got the kitchen sink (guac, salsa, rice, and beans) fish burrito to share. Fresh ingredients, large enough for two, and a salsa bar made for a satisfying lunch!

  • Robin W.

I usually eat here for lunch when I'm in Maui for work. I like having a choice of black or refried beans. I haven't ever been disappointed with my meal..tacos, burritos, chimichangas.... And if you need a pinata for a party, they have a bunch to choose from hanging from the ceiling. The staff is very nice too.

    (4)
  • Noah N.

I have been going here for years. They have the best Mexican food on Maui hands down (forget about Polly's!). The food is always great here, and the staff is amazing. I would go for the Kitchen Sink Burritos, or the Taquitos when they have them on special. Everything is amazing!

    (5)
  • Jennifer F.

Decent Mexican, good vegetarian options. Popular with locals.

  • Nicole S.

After living on Maui for over 5 years and conducting much research on the subject (hehe) I have to say that this is one of the best Mexican restaurants on Maui! The food is authentic, delicious and consistent. It's a no frills kind of place with cute pinatas hanging from the ceiling and friendly customer service. Love Pinatas!

    (5)
  • Seth H.

I must say the Mexican food in Maui is way better than Oahu, this place is really good, I enjoy the chicken nachos, the deep fried tacos, they have plenty different salsas to put as well as fresh cilantro and onions to garnish your meal. This place calls their marque burrito "The Kitchen Sink" which is a monster and well worth the price which is really resonable. It's located kitty corner from K-mart in Kahului. Plenty of parking.

  • Matthew R.

Great, budget-priced Mexican near enough to the airport to keep me filled until Newark. The sauces were excellent, the portions were huge. Definitely worth a trip.

  • Karen C.

Stopped in here for breakfast on the day we were heading back to the mainland. It was good and there was a ton of it but nothing special. I guess in Maui this would be considered good cheap food but I had better taco's at Ono - worth the trip to Lahina to eat them.

    (3)
  • Howard C.

Terrible chile rellenos and fish taco. Very possibly the worst I've ever had. Move to another restaurant.

We didnt eat on our flight into Maui, so we rented the car and the wife said stop at the first place U see. What a find, we loved the tacos and the cheese enchilada. I wish this place was close to my house. We stayed in Lahaina, so it was to far to eat there on our trip, but we made sure to stop on our way back home

    (4)
  • Julie B.

Came here on a lunch break hoping for delicious food and got it. The environment was casual, you walk up and order your food, and pick it up when it's called. The woman who rang me up was very helpful In helping me decide if the meal was enough or if I should get sides with it, etc. I got a chicken burrito with enchilada sauce and it was incredible, and humongous, I had to take the leftovers home for dinner. The restaurant had plenty of customers but the acoustics must be good because I was still able to read in peace, and enjoy my meal!

Best Mexican food on Maui, Great Salsa bar, friendly owner, good location, semi decent prices. Only reason for 4 and not 5 stars is....they strangely charge you for chips?!?!

  • Leilani D.

Best mexican food in Maui!! Their hard shell beef taco is great!!

  • Sheri D.

OMG! BEST Mexican food I've ever had in Hawaii! It's definitely a little hole-in-the-wall and we definitely stumbled upon this place by accident but the food is definitely awesome! So good that we made a point to stop by on the way to the airport before flying back to Oahu! Definitely YUMTASTIC!

Casual, fun and really good Mex. Love this place. Like hanging with family. Not beautiful but the food makes up for any lack of ambiance.

I'm from cali and I thought our burritos were good. I've never had such a great burrito as I did here, at Las Pinatas. The chips were phenomenal; all salsas homemade mild to hot. They also have a whole slot dedicated to chopped onions and a whole slot for cilantro. I don't know about you guys but there is just NEVER enough onions or cilantro in salsa so I found this to be a genius idea! The burrito (chicken, beans & cheese) was perfect. The flavor was amazing and the chicken was shredded. After eating this gigantic thing which was served on a 12" flour tortilla, I felt surprisingly energized and fresh. In Cali I usually feel like taking a nap after a burrito. We came here twice. First time starving, second time not so much. (Just to make sure our hunger wasn't clouding the true reality of the quality of food.) We gazed into each others eyes while both eating our last bite of burritos thinking the same thing; Damn good burritos.

I've been coming to Pinatas since it opened probably 20 years ago and it is still my favorite mexican place on the island. Fast, fresh, friendly are good words to describe it over all, but really it is just how delicious their food is that keeps me coming back again and again. I could eat there every day. I read some of the negative comments and can't believe they are talking about the same restaurant bc the service and quality have been consistent throughout the years and if there is ever a problem the staff are always so accommodating and quick to help rectify any misunderstandings or unsatisfactory results. I personally love the black bean and chicken tostada, chicken nachos, fish taco plate, and the taco/enchilada plate. I saw that people were giving the salsa a lot of flack but what I don't understand is that there are like 6 different salsas! Yes, some are very very mild which my Mom is very appreciative of as she can't eat very spicy food, and then there are varying degrees of heat. There is even one with some added onion/cilantro/lime which is my favorite. I understand sometimes people have bad experiences- maybe it was an off day in the kitchen- but I'd give this place a try before listening to some bad comments of visitors that have only been there once.

Amazing..... So nice to find good Mexican food right when you get off a plane. Their fish tacos are to die for and the prices and service was exceptional. Will for sure be back the next time we are in Maui!

I wish this place was were i live they had real Hispanic people cooking the food. the price is great i got a burrito the size of 8 burritos. You better bring your appetite good portions of food.

Good Mexican food. I grew up in Nor Cal with this type of food. Now I live in Arizona and can't find food that tastes this good. Can't believe I have to go to Hawaii for good food again. We ate here twice on our Maui vacation and Yelp helped us to find the place. Reasonably priced so try it out. I will be back!

  • Kurt H.

Good food, not great. Nice portions consist of mostly beans and rice. Tight on meat. No margaritas. Very crowded at times and hard to find a table.

    (3)
  • Brett D.

Great vegetarian selection including tamales. It was fast, great location, and big portions. I would highly recommend it for a quick lunch or dinner and affordable.

Loved the Kitchen Sink Burrito! Not bad at ALL for Mexican food on Maui!

  • K M.

Great food and very close to the airport. Vegan and vegetarian friendly. (in the way that things are actually marked as vegetarian or vegan, and not just that u can order things without meat or dairy). Decent prices for the location and portion.

Coming from California, we are spoiled with several great Mexican places to eat. We have been looking for good Mexican food on Maui and were told about Las Pinatas by a friend who has been on the island 20 years. He was right, this is so far the best we have tasted on Maui. It is a low key, kinda of "fast food" type of place with a small salsa bar and serve your self sodas and iced tea. The tacos are really good, so are the sauces, salsas, enchiladas, refried beans and rice. The first time the rice had several dry hard pieces but the next time we went it was done just right and both times the flavor was good. We will be trying many more dishes as we go back, and we will continue going back.

  • Misha Y.

Steak Fajitas were amazing. Dine in, restaurant quality food on a paper plate.

    (5)
  • Haole G.

so much food! argh! the kitchen sink is so huge its the size of a small dog. I'm still not hungry the next day. It was tasty so I ate every bite of its shredded chicken and refried bean etc etc that was in it. Bonus! they have a happy hour. and dr. pepper. Their guac is really creamy, I like mine a bit more chunky, but that could be personal. They have some really spicy salsas.

    (4)
  • Alanna E.

BEWARE they put peanut oil in of their food. If you gave an allergy this place will kill you.

    (1)
  • Ramona H.

I must be missing something because my take on this restaurant was that it definitely replaced one of the places that had been in my bottom five Mexican restaurants. My partner and I both agreed that the food was among the worst Mexican food we've ever had. Tasteless, bland, awful....you get the picture. All of the salsas were watery, with no substance or flavor. The decor was creepy. We should have paid attention to our inner voice that kept whispering, "this is a bad Mexican restaurant" when we first walked into the place. Unfortunately, we didn't, and ended up with the only drag on our otherwise outstanding trip to Maui.

    (1)
  • Debbie R.

Ya had me at "Salsa Bar". I love Salsa - on everything. So when I walked in the door and saw that glorious salsa bar, I knew I was going to be very happy! The food is nothing to scoff at either and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend!

    (4)
  • Ashleigh D.

Piñata's is a decent hole-in-the-wall Mexican food restaurant. I come for the tacos. They are cooked like I got used to in college in Arizona -- they're fried. I'm sure they're healthy anyway -- they have lettuce and tomatoes on them. The fried hard-shell tacos are such a step above pre-fab taco shells, that I won't eat tacos unless they come fried, so mainly I eat Mexican food when I'm visiting family in Arizona. These definitely are good tacos. The salsa is fresh and flavorful.

  • Kitzy B.

Service I would give it 5 stars. The lady at the register was very attentive. I had a carne asada burrito. Well the carne asada was just on point it was delicious. The beans well they were refried can beans (but now a days in mexican restaurants is hard to find something that it doesn't come from the can). I was glad to try their salsa and them not being from a can, props for that! Why I give them two stars. Well simple, they microwave their food. I'm sorry but the first thing that comes in my mind when you microwave something is that its not fresh of the day. You can't microwave rice or beans! They are suppose to be fresh. Well if you are (because I really don't know how many restaurants do it) don't do it on a place that your customers can see it!! Let us be with the illusion or go with the idea that nothing was microwaved!!

I'm originally from Texas, home of the most amazing Tex-Mex restaurants that side of the border. So, finding a Mexican food restaurant that meets my standards is hard to come by on Maui. However, Las Pinatas provides a pretty good option for tacos, fresh salsa, etc., when I don't feel like making my own. My kids love the pinatas that hang from the ceiling, too! The prices are reasonable for Maui, again, not cheap like Texas, but worth it if you're craving Mexican.

    (4)
  • Jean B.

So, this is our second year in a row coming to Pinatas. This time we had quick friendly service 4 stars for service 3 star for the price. ($40 for 2 people) 5 stars for parking .. plenty of space in the parking lot. 3 stars for taste/flavor of the food (kinda bland, but you can add salsas ) 5 stars for quantity of food. Overall, ehhhhh..

    (3)
  • Shaun E.

Horrible service. 4 employees standing around talking we were ready to order employees ignored us a party of 5 no hello no nothing. Phone rings takes phone order still ignored us. Waited another 5 minutes still no greetings nothing. Did not acknowledge us. As a yelp reviewer this has been by far the worst service ever! Highly do not recommend this Mexican food establishment!

    (1)
  • Kim K.

The yummiest Mexican food quick and not too pricey. I go for the enchiladas and tacos!!

    (4)
  • April D.

No question whatsoever the food is amazing however, The tables were very dirty as was The restroom. When we came up to order the woman at the register was rude, obviously having a bad day. It was obvious that patronizing the restaurant was an imposition on the cashier.

    (3)
  • Amber G.

Solid breakfast burrito. They gave me exactly what I asked for. Service was friendly and food was good. I would return.

    (4)
  • Ken T.

Not as good as I expected based on the reviews. The food was small portioned and bland. It is obvious people who have eaten here have never had good Mexican food.

    (2)
  • Jaime A.

The most expensive Mexican food place ever. Ordered a chile verde burrito that came out with just beans and cheese. When told about the lack of an actual chile verde burrito, they proceeded to just pour a scoop of chile verde onto the opened burrito and let that be that. Their salsa bar is decent, but no pico de gallo!? Ordered another burrito with chile verde to top it off, got a mountain of cheese with a hint of a taste of chile verde. Food actually tastes yummy, but the prices are just ridiculous. The lady who took our order was helpful and patient but answered the phone at least three times during taking our order. Not a fan and won't be back

No changes, but a 2008 review needs to be updated. Food is still good, specials are worth checking on, and the salsas are excellent. It can get crowded.

Not even remotely close to So Cal's Mexican food! The best thing about this place is its salsa and even that's sub-par. Unfortunate misrepresentation of authentic Mexican food. Won't be eating here ever again. The quest for authentic great tasting Mexican food on Maui continues... Wish me luck!

It must have been the time of the day around 2pm on a Saturday cuz the tortilla chips were stale, the pork in the taco was hard and dry and the Spanish rice was dry. Everyone is friendly there, but the foods gotta be good for us to go again. While standing at the salsa bar, the guy next to me was piling on the salsa and cilantro. Now I know why.

It's been 8 years and the only thing that has changed is the prices have increased a bit... Their burritos are spectacular. Personally I would advise against the kitchen sink as it is too much Burritto for most people. The regular carne asada is perfect and just as good as anything you will find in SOCAL

Delicious! (We're from Vegas, Mexican places are a dime a dozen, and I'm picky!) For a small, counter order joint, this place is great! Fed four of us for less than $50, in Maui standards, that's amazing! 3 of us had grilled chicken burritos, smothered.... Beautiful white meat chicken, loaded with beans and cheese. Fourth person had enchiladas that looked so ono! Def worth a stop if you crave Mexican on island!

Not bad. I'm from LA and expect decent Mexican food. This was. Beans were good. I had 2 pork tacos.

Came here looking for some chorizo and eggs. After looking at the giant menu in front of me, I asked the lady if they had any. She pointed to a corner and on that wall was a breakfast menu. Not really sure why they chose to do it like that, but ok. I ordered chorizo eggs and potatoes burrito. When I got the food, the plate had four random tortilla chips. I thought well that's odd. then I took my first bite and it all made sense. Half the burrito was on the plate. Great food. Used the random chips to finish it off lol

Piñata's use to be our favorite Mexican restaurant on Maui however over the years we have seen a big and continual decline. I am only giving this review in hopes that the owner will see it and realize what is happening... You never know if the counter person is going to be friendly or not (in the past...not). The food often comes out luke warm. And 8 out of 10 times that we go to order a guacamole/chips they do not have guacamole. Now I don't know about you but when I go to a Mexican place to eat I expect to have guacamole. If is very disappointing. This also is not just a recent thing this has been ongoing for several years. The place needs an overhaul and good cleaning. I am not sure if it has changed hands or if the owner's son is just not there anymore but management is definetly lacking. Hopefully it will improve. So disappointing as we have patronized them since they opened.

People who visit here from the mainland need to seriously lower their standards for Mexican food because, honestly, it's not going to get any better than this. It's Hawaii, you don't come here to get Mexican, but if you do, I highly recommend Pinatas. Not only are their veggies FRESH, and crunchy but their tortilla chips and tortilla bowls are full of flavor! I ordered the Taco Salad and I was NOT disappointed. A light crowd which meant that the food was fast. The prices were high, but again, this is Hawaii. One thing I especially love about this experience is when I walked in the door and the man who I assume is the owner, greeted me with a smile.

Stopped by on the way back from Hana.. Order the all meat chicken burrito enchilada style. Very filling and full of meat. The chips and guac was good plenty of guac.

I come here for the hard shell beef tacos, and a beer. There is nothing else I care for on the menu, and the lady that takes the orders is way too talkative with her co-workers making clientele wait, and often times mistakes are made because of it.

No wonder Maui times readers voted this maui's best fish tacos! These are like no others I've ever had. Chile verde is also delicious and melts in your mouth. Will stop here again next time we are in Maui!

Nachos chile verde was dissapointing. Couldn't even find the pork. Not enough chips. I shared this with one person and we each had approx. 4-5 chips each only. Still hungry for $10.

Great food. It's a Mexican restaurant owned by a Guatemalan, so some of the Guatemalan flavor comes through. We love going every time we get to Maui.

You will want to take a pass on this one. Low end generic tasting Mexican. I had the kitchen sink burrito, which means the rice and beans are inside, with enchilada sauce. About $12.50 and not worth it. My wife had a taco salad with shredded chicken. Bland with nothing special to offer. They have a small "fixings" bar that was empty on some items. Save your cravings for Mexican until you are back on the mainland.

Great authentic Mexican food. Came on vacation and just saw it passing by, stopped and it tastes just like my favorite restaurant back home. We ordered 4 meals for $40 so it's actually a great price comparison to anywhere else. VERY friendly staff, tipped $5 before I even tasted the food. SOOOOO good! Thank you

Waste of time and money. The people working there looked sketchy. The salsa bar looked filthy. The tables WERE filthy. The chips were hard as a rock...like daysssss old. The guacamole was good. That was all. There is literally dirt hanging from the ceiling tile. Seriously, the Mexicans in LA selling real Mexican food would be scrubbing that. Don't waste your time. It's kinda gross!

I feel like everyone not from hawaii is ever satisfied with Mexican food from the islands. The cultural mixing pot that we are just hasn't quite had any Mexican restaurants open that can compare to the mainland, I get it. Y'all want authentic, fresh off the boat, hand made tortilla Mexican goodness. We'll lower your standards, 'this ain't the mainland' lol.. BUT I love pinatas. I do. I love it. It's not only my most favorite Mexican restaurant in all of hawaii, but it's my most favorite restaurant in all of maui. Why? I always get the enchilada taco combo plate. Wet, greasy, hot, oily, flavorful fan-fricken-tastic. Everytime I visit maui, I visit here. Always. I docked one star because it's expensive, but I don't reaaaallly care. I'll spend an extra couple bucks to stuff my face hefer style.

Just alright. The food is OK for Mexican food in Hawaii. No table service. Only counter service but they do have tables to sit at. Had Beef Fahitas with 3 corn tortillas and a coke. $18 Service was very friendly

BEST MEXICAN FOOD ON MAUI! Yes, I went there! And I've been going to Pinatas since I was a little girl! I always, and honestly have never tried anything else..But I always get the Kitchen sink! It's an enormous burrito with all the fillings! I think the cost is about $10 now, but its filled with cheese, rice, beans, your choice of meat, sour cream, & guac. It's out of this world and you need to try it!!! Plus they have a good selection of Mexican beer if your looking to have a little Taco Tuesday fiesta! Whenever I go home to Maui, I have to stop in and get my Las Pinatas Kitchen Sink burrito!

I'm from a town in Northern California where the Mexican restaurant are absolutely amazing & this place was a bit disappointing. From the food being bland to the employees seemingly zombie like I'll go somewhere else next time for sure.

How hungry are you? If "very" is your answer, then you've settled at the right place! On my most recent visit to Maui with the fam, we stopped over at Las Pinatas for some quick grub. And even though none of us had ever been here before, I had a great feeling about this place.. Not only bc of the Yelp reviews, but bc I was dying of hunger and needed to eat, pronto!!! I instantly called out for the Taco / Enchilada Plate, which was pictured above our cashier. She asked me how hungry I was, and in unison, the fam let out a firm "very." Hah. They know me so well! Anyway, our cashier agreed that the Taco / Enchilada Plate was a perfect fit for my level of hungriness. I chose soft shell, beef for the taco; and chile verde (pork) for the enchilada. Soft Taco: yelp.com/biz_photos/YgZS… Chile Verde Enchilada Plate: yelp.com/biz_photos/YgZS… I munched on some jalapenos and onions from the salsa bar while waiting for my food.. Thank goodness for that salsa bar. But really, the wait wasn't long.. I'm just overly dramatic when I'm super hungry. When my food was ready, I didn't even wait for the fam to get settled, I just started chowing down. I literally inhaled everything on my plate.. and finished off the rest of my Dad's cheese enchilada plate. The beans and rice with the enchilada sauce, hot salsa, jalapenos and onions were the icing on the cake. I love sauce and boy, was it saucy! Between the cheese enchilada and the chile verde, it's a close call... Mostly bc I love cheesey anything, but the chile verde was so flavorful! So next time, I'll get the soft shell taco with chile verde (pork) and the cheese enchilada! Best of both worlds! ;)

Mmmm. Good "kitchen sink" vegan burritos :) The rice and beans are flavorful, and the guac is of course so nice to have without the extra cost. Kind of sucks the burrito is so expensive though. $10 seems like a lot when it's not even a wet burrito. That's what you pay at a sit-down restaurant for a burrito with a side of rice and beans. Anyway, still good and really healthy. Way better alternative to Taco Bell or any fast food joint like McDonald's or Wendy's. The salsa bar is great, too. Their haiku habañero sauce is yum! Had some chips and salsa, too. I think the chips are homemade, and they are pretty good. Cashier NOT friendly or helpful. The cooks however are pretty nice and friendly. They're the ones who call you up to give you your food. Maybe grumpy cashier lady should be in the back not dealing with customers.

This place was amazimg. The staff was EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. The food was beyond expectations. The meat was so tender and delicious. The salsa tasted wonderful. This place is all around amazing. I recommend this place to anyone who like AUTHENTIC mexican food!

The food was very good! I'm glad our friends took us here for lunch on the 29th when we visited Maui. If we make it back to the island, we will definitely stop here again. I had a tostada and my husband had a burrito and we shared a side of beans and rice. We also has the chips, salsa, and guacamole. The guacamole needed some salt but everything else was wonderful!

Great place for a bite in town. I always get the Kitchen sink burrito and have been since I was a grom. I had it with the fish a while ago and it was unreal. Last time though, the quality was lower and the taste was bland. Over the years owners and cooks have changed, so the quality isn't consistent.

We got two kitchen sink grilled steak and a taco salad it cost $37! Everything had no flavor even the salsa had no flavor and tasted like canned tomatoes. They did not have any other hot sauce to offer (such as tapatio). On top of it all the women running the register was not very happy to have us eat at her establishment, since she was rude, gave us short answers and seemed altogether inconvenienced. Please do yourself a favor and do not waste your money here. I hate to say this but Taco Bell is a 5 star establishment in comparison to this place.

    (1)
  • Nate S.

So so. The taste was bland. Similar to a taco bell bean burrito. The shrimp were fresh at least. Portion size was large. Price kinda high for a burrito. Could spend less at a Chipotle or Moe's and have a better burrito that is just as filling.

Let's say the food is edible after a long flight to Maui. No wonder they are close to the airport. This is a small Mom & Pops, fast food Mexican joint but they charge ridiculously. We had 1 burrito & 1 nachos with 2 Corona's and they charged almost $40. The food was ok but I'm giving the stars for the salsa bar otherwise I wouldn't give any. Thankfully, the salsa bar had diced onions, jalapeños, cilantro and various salsa's without this I couldn't eat my nachos.

  • Izzy C.

Chicken and cheese enchiladas were very authentic with pasilla chiles. As authentic as you can get coming from 2 Mexicans. Salsa bar was average. Salsa is too runny, watered down. Other than cashier who is clearly unhappy to be there and not friendly. Good experience.

These hucksters charged $6 for a bean, rice & cheese burrito that was barely bigger than my clenched fist! Shame on them...

We were happy with our meal here. Got the kitchen sink fish burrito to share and it was very satisfying. Good Mahi Mahi and lots of guacamole inside. The salsa bar was decent and I liked the tomatillo sauce the best. Chips were good. The older man who works here is very friendly and patient! If I lived in Maui I'd eat here a lot.

Very disappointed in the taste of my food, or rather lack of taste. I got the kitchen sink chicken burrito without sour cream. It came with chicken, refried beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole. It was tasteless. I couldn't taste the guacamole at all. The chicken had little flavor. The refried beans were bland. The chicken was at least moist. Cost = $10.57. At least there was a salsa bar with jalapeños, cilantro and various salsa. After adding a few tablespoons of chopped cilantro, green chile salsa and jalapeños, it had at least a little flavor. My spouse had the kitchen sink beef burrito and voiced the same sentiments. I would have given 1 star, but gave 2 since the salsa bar was available and made the burrito at least edible with the toppings available We will not return.

This is the worst Mexican food my wife and I have ever had. It's the worst food we had in Maui in two weeks. I had the beef enchilada with beans and rice and it was nasty!! My wife had a taco salad with beef which she said had no flavor. We neither one finished eating our meal. We dumped both in the trash and left. This food was disgusting. I would never eat there again. I can't understand why anyone would ever return. Honestly this place deserves a negative star. It is a disgrace to the whole beautiful island of Maui. We enjoy eating good Mexican food when ever we travel from California to Louisiana but not in Maui, HI. Texas has the best Mexican food over all.

Had their Nachos 12/22/13 Very depressing the tortillas chips were so thin. that they were weak limp and you were unable to use them as we are accustomed as an implement. We ate in the restaurant, so there was no travel time account for.

The place is comfortable. The food is good. They got Fanta and Jarritos. You hear Spanish in the kitchen. I wouldn't dare to claim I know what is authentic Mexican food. I know flavor and this food has that. They fry the flour taco shells and it's crunchy. Food is hot. Salsa bar on the side to pic your poison. They have beer. Nice. The crowds are here and the foods all consumed. They need more tables. Come and try it. Pick one thing or a few. I recommend it.

Not the best Mexican but certainly not bad. I had the kitchen sink burrito which was way too big but tasty. A previous reviewers comment on strip mall counter service food at near restaurant prices pretty well describes this place. I would come back again but we are just passing through.

Felt like having Mexican for lunch and my friend recommended Piñatas.. It was nothing out of the ordinary I terms of the restaurant itself. But the food made up for it.. I didn't know what to eat so I has to ask for assistance from the counter attendant.. I didn't get her name but she was very helpful.. She took a lot at me and said.. The kitchen sink!!! The first thing that came to my head was... What the....? Kitchen Sink?!! Then she started to Illustrate how big it was.. So I said.. Why not? The styrofoam container came out and it was huge!!! And it was good and then gone. Lol!! It was awesome! It was very good and will definitely return if I'm thinking of Mexican the next time I visit Maui.. The staff was also helpful to say the the least..

It's hard for me to completely hate on this place because of a few aspects - * The name and decor is so tacky that it's cute. Piñatas line the ceiling. A forest of them. It's absurd in a Mad Hatter sense. * The cashier was so sweet and helpful. She sort of looked like the gorgeous ginger lady from Mad Men. * They have a clean bathroom. * One of the virile Mexican cooks was checking out my middle-aged mom. Made her day, cracked me up. * The horchata was pretty good. Unfortunately, that's all the nice things I can say. Other things I would say would be - * I would describe the salsa as the consistency of water with a hint of salsa for color and taste. Bland, bland, bland. It was shocking and shameful. Worst salsa I've ever had in my life. * The 'Kitchen Sink Burrito' which is apparently their gimmick was extremely disappointing. Sure it's a big hulk of a burrito but it was incredibly bland and boring. Never encountered carne asada that was so lackluster. There wasn't a single element I could even fain mild praise for. I've had burritos that were more satisfying palette wise. Double shameful. If they can't make a decent burrito I would definitely not even bother trying anything else. I had a delicious burrito from Whole Foods that was a flavorful decadent feast. I would also like to point out is that you should be careful where you sit since the tables are of close proximity of each other. If you had the misfortune of having obnoxious loud lechers sat next to you, you'll hear everything. It slightly dampened my experience but I would never hold it against the restaurant. All in all, I would classify the food as severely lacking in taste. It felt like a slap in the face to have such horrid salsa passed off as anything than canned liquid garbage. After this experience I had no faith in Yelp Maui.

First impression is the place smells like a dead steer. Cashier lets out a bored sigh as I approach the counter to order. Then, mediocre Mexican food plopped on a paper plate. It's called Las Pinatas because there are about 10 cheapy piñatas attached to the stained ceiling with thumb tacks, a lot of effort went into that décor I'm sure.

  • Natalia C.

I was hungry for some Mexican food so I stopped in Pinatas for lunch. Its a casual little place where you order at the counter and sit down to eat or can order to go. I chose the grilled shrimp kitchen sink burrito which was around $12, a very fair price for the gigantic burrito that I got! It was delicious although I could not finish it. I would definitely reccomend it and would say that you might want to split it with someone! I also got a chicken tamale which was also amazing. It was Cheesy and the sauce was yummy!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
