The staff is friendly here, but a little questionable and unprofessional...our first waitress was obviously sick or something and right after ordering our meals, another waitress came to our table telling us she'd now be our waitress and that they had to "draw straws" to see who was going home. The music was off so it made a very large room with only 4 other customers sat close to one another extremely awkward. The food was just alright, not nearly as good as it was this past summer. The table beside us was never wiped off after the couple beside us left until our waitress brought another couple out, grabbed a napkin off the table and quickly wiped it off right in front of all of us before seating them. We then realized our side salad was never brought out so she apologized, brought a huge side salad out and said she made it herself. Not only was half of the lettuce brown, but after watching her quickly wipe a table off with a dry napkin beside us, I didn't want that side salad anymore. Probably won't be going back here.

Great local restaurant on the bay in Appalachacola. We ate Captain Oysters 12, fried grouper basket which was perfectly breaded and light. The chicken philly was good and the have plenty of items on the menu for non-seafood lovers. The view of bay was very cool so sit outside on the covered desk. The service was good too.

Awesome food. One of my favorite oyster bars anywhere. One word of caution if sitting outside be warned the gulls will swarm your food. Especially if the chuckle heads next to you are feeding them.

Boss Oyster has been a regular stop for our family on our trips to Cape San Blas, but recent changes to menu and staff have left us disappointed. On our most recent visit, we ordered corn fritters, a dozen oysters, 2 shrimp po-boys and a kid's shrimp basket. We had a hard time selecting our dozen, because they've scaled back their oyster options to a few most popular choices - removing several of our favorites. The oysters were small and lacked any flavor of their own, but they were prepared well. The shrimp po-boys - which we've had here before - were little more than jumbo shrimp (with tails on) served on hoagie bread. The server seemed surprised when I asked where the remoulade sauce was, and pointed out the tartar sauce. The kids shrimp basket was generously portioned, but the shrimp tasted freezer-burned. They didn't seem fresh at all. All our meals came with fries, which were were mealy and bland. The corn fritters didn't come out until the end, and they were fine, but nothing remarkable. Plus, prices have gone up as the quality has gone down: The oysters were nearly $20 for a dozen, $13 each for the po-boys, and another $7 for the kids' shrimp basket. At $4, the corn fritters were by far the best deal. All in all, the recent changes seem more designed to cut costs than to improve the food or experience, and that usually isn't a good sign. I hope Boss Oyster can get their groove back - in the meantime, we're going to give some other area restaurants a shot.

The oysters are amazing and extremely fresh! The oyster stew is wonderful even when it's 90 degrees outside! I love the atmoshphere. It's extremely casual and laid back. Definitely a must go every time we stay on SGI. :)

I will say right off the bat that I am NOT a fan of most seafood, I enjoy fish and that's it from the seafood realm. The only reason I went was because other fam members wanted to try it. I will say though that I ordered the best thing according to everyone at lunch that day. My in-laws each ordered the oyster combo. They said that they tasted fine. There were too much of the sub par toppings (powdered Parmesan, etc) and the oysters themselves were very, very small. (We did find out later that it was a bad year for oysters all the way round). Hubby ordered grilled red fish, it was over-cooked and not seasoned well for my liking. I ordered the super grouper sandwich. It was some of the best fried fish I have had. Everyone got a piece, and agreed. The filets were huge on the sandwich, I took two pieces off just to be able to fit it in my mouth!! It was a very pricey $22 for a sandwich and some fries. But the fish was awesome. Corn fritters were good too. Service was fine. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with choosing the different varieties of oysters' toppings. The reason I didn't give more stars is the decor and tables are pretty atrocious. It didn't look dirty per say, but patio furniture with plastic table clothes that are weighed down with tiles and looked like they don't get changed much, yuck. And the fact that everyone except me was disappointed with their meals.

I've been going to Apalachicola, Pt. St Joe, Cape San Blas, St George Island since the early 80s... This place has gone downhill over the years. For one, the bugs (sand gnats, (locally called no-see-ums) outside are atrocious... seriously, a bug zapper or citronella candle, tiki torch wouldn't hurt. The prices well...they are overpriced for sure, you are definitely paying for the view. There are so many better places that you can get just as good oyster for so much cheaper. Just FYI you can buy half a bushel down the road for less than 20 bucks...that is how overprice they are. Have had several things here, the grouper portion is rather small for the price. The fries are definitely not home made, pre frozen krinkle cut. Hush puppies are standard, nothing special. GF had a shrimp poboy, the lettuce was puny and super wilted, the bread was not good, the sandwich wasn't dressed, they left all the tails on the shrimp ... seriously, cut the tails off before putting it on a sandwich. I've had dozens of poboys, and plenty in New Orleans, nobody leaves the tails on. the pickles on the sandwich were *dry* meaning, they were sitting out for awhile somewhere. The red beans and rice were terrible and flavorless. The food came up almost too fast, as to not to be fresh and just had the stuff already sitting out for awhile. Service, service is actually pretty good, I'd give service and staff a 4 stars, they are always super nice, but what is coming out of the kitchen has gone down hill for the price. NoFlorida native that grew up by the water from Pensacola to Panama City, all the way down to Tampa would be impressed. Maybe people from up north visiting St. George Island would be impressed though b/c they aren't used to fresh seafood. The seafood is for sure fresh though, just the preparation could be much better and the costs for the experience are too much.

Quite possibly the best Oysters in the world! Baked, fried, or raw they know how to cook them. Its a hole in the wall to heaven and the waiters are all characters which fit the restaurant perfectly. Amazing oysters and if your lucky enough to be in the area it's a must eat.

My two-star review is likely predicated on the fact that we started out intending on finer dining last night. We've been on St. George Island for several days, so we've had many raw bar type meals, sitting on a picnic table and sweating over a beer. We weren't counting on Memorial Day holiday restaurant closings in Apalachicola, creating long waits at other places. We ended up at Boss Oyster by default and got yet another hot seat at a picnic table. Although this dinner was about as far as you can get from fine dining, the oysters were exceptional! Especially the assortment of roasted and baked oysters we started our dinner with. My grouper was perfectly fried and flavorful. We thought the corn fritters tasted like fried wads of canned corn. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there, knowing that the oysters are perfectly prepared and served.

This was the worst dining experience of my life! While the food was decent, the service was horrible. The poor girl that waited on us was brand new and still wasn't sure really what to do. She had tables throughout the restaurant. I was thinking this was bad management, but it turns out... THERE WAS NO F.O.H. MANAGEMENT. AT ALL. My table was finished around 7:30 and we did not leave until 9:00 due to difficulties with our bill. We had 8 people at our table, so we needed four checks. Our waitress came back and said she is only allowed to split the tab into two checks, so she had split it down the middle. REALLY??? NO. We told her this is unacceptable and we wanted to speak to a manager. Then we tried to help her out and told her how we can do just two checks. She goes and comes back with the new checks and they were totally wrong. We were charged for 14 iced teas when there were only four. We called her back over and showed her the errors. She said she will get the manager to fix it. After waiting 20 mins, we walked to the front and tracked our waitress down. STILL at this time we did not know there is was no house manager available. They had us meet them at the office at the inn. The easiest thing would've been to void the entire order, and reenter it correctly. The employee that tried to help our waitress was reluctant to do this because the "manager" would get upset. We AGAIN asked to see this manager, and the KITCHEN MANAGER comes out... obviously of no help. Finally after over an hour of this, we received our correct bill. This is not an exaggeration whatsoever. Our waitress did the best she could This was just poor, or really, lack of organization, lack of training and lack of management that appeared to be the problem. My mom was very disappointed because she had enjoyed this restaurant in years past.

My husband and I decided to try this place as it was right down the street from our hotel and the reviews were decent. We were very disappointed all around. We were placed in a corner surrounded by several large parties and forgotten about. It took 20 minutes for our server to come and take our drink orders and another 10 for them to actually arrive. We then ordered an appetizer of baked Parmesan oysters which were decent but had powdered Parmesan instead of fresh grated Parmesan. For an entree I ordered the oyster po boy with a side of cheese grits. The po boy was good but the grits were mediocre at best. My husband ordered the blackened grouper which was awful. It was soggy and barely blackened. There are plenty of other better restaurants in Apalachicola.

This was our third trip here. The first two experiences were fun and memorable due to the oysters alone. Today was quite the opposite. The oysters were minuscule and not worth the money. To try to add to the flavor and bulk them up a little, we tried them on crackers. Bad idea, the crackers were stale. I've never seen my dad leave an oyster on the tray. They really were that bad..and most of them the size of a dime. I don't blame this on the season. Each of our previous visits occurred in August as well. On a positive note, the beer was nice and cold. We will not be back to Boss. It seems that today was either a fluke, or they are comfortable living on the good name they made for themselves years ago, and that good name simply does not apply any more. A shame :(

I saw a rat in the kitchen when I was waiting for a drink. I know...I know...all kitchens have rats at some point or another. I get the impression this one has a lot. Maybe they need to bring in a few more stray cats to fight the infestation. The fact that I could muster up my strength to eat there after seeing this crawling vermin is a testament to my intestinal fortitude. About the food. The oysters are great and the myriad preparations will impress anyone bored with the plain raw variety. The rest of the menu is ok. The seafood quality is great, but most of the sides are not very good. The red beans and rice are particularly bad, consisting of just out of the can flavorless kidney beans mixed with starchy hard rice. If you go for oysters or just seafood you won't be disappointed, but there are much better overall choices in Apalach. Oysters and Seafood 4 stars everything else- 2 stars rat- 0 stars

We wanted some oysters on the half shell and decided to give it a try. We had been told the oysters were great but the service was poor in addition they were almost double the price of most other restaurants in the city - but they must be good right? WRONG. The service was not even up to poor it was the worst. We had to go up to the kitchen 3 times to get what we needed to dine, utensils, crackers for the tuna dip, glass of wine etc. The oysters might have been good coming out of the kitchen but by the time they made it to our table they were cold and hard, I also felt that the other ingredients totally overpowered the tiny little oysters so that you couldn't taste oysters at all.

  • Carrie Z.

Absolutely horrible. We read reviews as we were ordering and thought maybe the bad reviews were just being harsh. Nope. 100% accurate!! How do you screw up a fish sandwich and chicken tenders? I'm pretty sure my husband has food poisoning. It smells like rotten fish inside and out. That should have been our first indicator. They we're out of oysters.... But it was almost the only open restaurant in town on a Sunday night. Now we see why. You're better off going to the gas station for dinner.

shrimped cooked well with heavy breading. Oyster stew was very good with 8 oysters in a cup serving. Grouper chowder smelled too fishy, almost pasty feeling fried oysters suffered from heavy breading too but tasted ok cheesy grits were almost crunchy--like an under cooked instant version enjoyed the birds flying around and stealing cracker packets off the tables

Place is awesome. I have eaten Apalachicola oysters my entire adult life, but never had been to the city. I'm sure there are cheaper places that the locals eat, but these oysters were amazing. Had a dozen raw. Had to be some of the best tasting oysters I've ever put in my mouth. It's amazing the number of flavored oysters also. Never would I think that they could create an oyster that you could eat with chopsticks. My favorite was the Gouda Gouda. I will dream of this place for the rest of my life.

It's fun to sit a few yards from the boat that caught your dinner, but there are downsides: namely being harangued (and perhaps shat on) throughout your meal by fearless seagulls looking for a handout. I'd recommend sitting inside, or at least far from the water's edge. On to the food: super fresh oysters take center stage, but sides were also good, especially the corn fritters. The environment is super laid back (maybe even a tad dirty) so it's fine to come here after a day at the beach.

Let me say first that I *love* oysters. In fact, in the week that we've been vacationing in the area, I have eaten several dozen. This is our last night here, and I am so disappointed. I got a dozen raw, and they lacked the lovely briny flavor of a good fresh oyster. Yes, they were fresh... but they were missing something. For oysters in Apalachicola, I prefer Papa Joe's hands down. Their oysters are less expensive ($5.49/dozen raw as opposed to $10.95 at Boss Oyster), and they tasted 10 times better.

The Boss rocks! Perfect place to indulge in a few cocktails and oysters after a day at the beach. Apalachicola is a great little town along the Gulf with a world class reputation for mighty fine oysters. You cannot get them fresher than here at Boss Oyster. We started with cocktails- Bloody Mary and Hurricane. While they seemed like the perfect choice to start with, they weren't all that strong, so we moved on to more reliable beer and wine. They offer oysters raw, fried or broiled with a large selection of toppings. We ordered the Rockefeller II, Captain Jack and Monterey. The Captain was our favorite- the hot sauce and the bacon make a yummy mate for the large and juicy oyster. We also ordered a basket of fried scallops- VERY tasty. The batter was not too heavy so the scallop really shined. Sit along the docks and watch (but please do not feed!!) the birds. The boats moter on by, bringing more yummy oysters to share with the lucky world.

Boss Oyster? Heck yeah! I've been here twice with family when they came to visit me in Tallahassee. Both times we have gorged ourselves on oysters and fried seafood. We also couldn't believe how cheap the prices were for freshly caught oysters! (We're from Los Angeles, so we're used to food prices there) We've had them raw and steamed and have been happy with both. Great location, pretty good service, and fun atmosphere.

Good oysters. I recommend the fried oyster entree and make sure you sit outside next to the bayou. Great place for kids. Usually there are a couple of gators hanging around in the water that usually keeps the kids entertained.

I think if I liked oysters this would be the place for me. Sadly, I don't. I thought it would be good to come here to eat fish. In theory, this holds up, but not in practice. Service is bad and although the food was very good, the service is what sinks this review. They really need to re-examine this aspect of their business.

  • Lauren F.

There are so many other places you can go with better ambiance and the same or better food. Like Up the Creek Raw Bar or Hole in the Wall Raw Bar. The food wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. Had the buffalo shrimp, not my favorite. Crab cake fried, too much breading. Flounder sandwich was good. The corn fritters were good too. We were just grossed out by the garbage flying in the entryway and the seagulls eating off of the outside tables. The hostess was unfriendly. Our waitress was good, she got us outa there when we'd had enough.

Went here a couple times and the service was quite slow. Fortunately I was on vacation so my patience wad much more than usual. The oysters were really great, both times. I hope to be back next time I'm down there!

We ordered the rockafella oysters and combo oysters. The combo oysters had asparagus, shrimp, crab, and bacon and Gouda cheese. My favorite was the rockafella oysters. Everthing had cheese backed on it.

We were on the coast and needed to find some great grouper. We went here as part of a wedding event. I will say for a place the speaks highly of the fresh grouper they really trashed it. It tasted just OK at best. Someone else in the party had ice tea and was just turned off by the flavor. How to you screw up ice tea? If in town, try something else.

We went here with friends on 02/25/2010. It was my first oyster experience and my Fiance ordered a great baked dish of them with bacon and jalepenos. I ordered the Journey's End sandwich -- which is definitely opened faced. The scallops, oysters, and shrimp on it were very tasty, but it failed for me as a sandwich. It needed some kind of sauce/mayonnaise and less olives. The service was excellent and the shucker let me try a raw oyster! The corn fritters are SOOOOOO good! Can't wait to go back!

  • Ken B.

The Oysters here are really good. 5 star good. It's a good dive bar and very popular. My knock against the place is that everything else we ordered wasn't that great (fried seafood sampler and grilled grouper). Not flavorful or tasty and the service was a little slow. But the oysters are really good. If that had been the only thing we ordered it would be 5 stars.

I always eat at Boss Oyster when I'm in Apalach. As the name says, the oysters are Boss. I love them raw, large and salty. They also have an amazing number of broiled options. The grouper is great as well and it's really grouper. Carlos was our server and did a outstanding job. Get the Key Lime Pie to go.

I've always been a big fan of Boss Oyster and we always make an effort to have dinner there whenever we're in the area. Unfortunately, things have changed, and not for the better. Apparently they have a new chef. The oysters are still delicious, both raw and fried, and the location down by the river is still pleasant. However, gone are the curly fries and the delicious corn hush puppies, now to have been replaced by the dried out stuff you would get at Captain D's. There is no more fish on the children's menu. The fish servings are smaller than before, yet as expensive (two small pieces of fried grouper for $16). No more draft beer! (What a travesty!) The service has always been bordering on indifferent, but this time it was outright unfriendly. And it is not cheap. Sadly, it may be time to look for another oyster bar.

Wine came out with lipsick on the glass, wife got food poisoning from the oysters, grouper was way overcooked, salad was just lettuce, rice and beans had no rice. This place is a joke.

The best oyster basket ever! Crispy, big perfectly cooked oysters with big tasty fries and oniony hush puppies; served with creamy coleslaw. Yum. Their oysters on the half shell are world renown for size and creamy taste. Just delicious! Deck seating gives a view of the bay with laughing gull songs on the air.

This place was great. On vacation visiting St. George island, we had heard about Boss through a menu left at our house. We were so happy to have found the place. The Oysters were by far the best we had all week at any restaurant. Staff was great! We were there during Tropical Storm Lee and even the rain looked beautiful from the outdoor deck.

My dad has a beach house on St. George Island, so he took me to Boss Oyster one day for lunch. I didn't get oysters, but I did get the grilled grouper sandwich. It was so delicious. The boats that catch the fish were tied up to the dock, so I know that it was fresh. The next day a larger group of us went back. This time I tried the Grand Grits. Holy Cow!! They were AMAZING! Jumbo shrimp, ham, cheese grits. The words don't look that good, but the actual dish is amazing! I think that most Yankees would be pleasantly surprised at how wonderful grits can taste when done right. Others in the group ordered oysters and they raved about the size, flavor and multitude of preparation styles. The ambiance is typical of North Florida coastal. We sat on a dock 2 feet above the water with a great view of the bridge. The service is Southern with a smile, peppered with a lot of "hon" and "sweet heart." I highly recommend this place if you're visiting St. George or Apalachicola or are in Tallahassee and need to get away.

First of all the best Oysters in the world are in Apalachicola; period. So if you really want to experience eating the best fat succulent fresh Oysters this is the best place in Apalachicola, but I will admit at any of the other eateries that offer as such you will not get a bad oyster! This place is very laid back, primitive, on the water, and social friendly; in walking distance to the wrest of the town. We only paid $7 a dozen and had 8 dozen. I have been here several times over the years, and never ordered anything else they offer, but I feel confident there other menu items are good too. Fast service too!

  • Tobin B.

The oyster combinations were good. The beer selection was pretty good. The rest of the menu is standard beach affair of "if it lives in water, we will fry it". Ambiance or menu would bring me back to the restaurant. The dip can on the host podium was a nice touch.

This place's oysters were so good that if I wasn't so full after 2 dozen I would have kept eating all night long. We first tried a dozen each on the half shell. Being from New Orleans, I know a good oyster when I slurp it down but I have never tasted anything like these. They are saltier than any oyster I've had from La. They are brought, already ice cold, from the boat to the pier at the Boss. From the water to the restaurant they are kept on ice and that ice cold temperature makes them a delight in the heat of the summer. They were so good that I didn't even bother with the cocktail sauce. For our 2nd course we tried the combo. We each chose 3 different preparations so we could sample as many as possible. Our favorites were the sushi and sashimi style oysters but everything was outstanding. I couldn't leave without trying a couple of shooters and found that they were less shots and more like cocktails. I took my time sipping them, saving those salty oysters at the bottom for a true "shot". Everything else on the menu may be great but I wouldn't know. I couldn't get enough of them oysters.

For the last 30 years, I show up as I am and that would be that same crazy ass black woman. I started coming to Boss Oyster in 1988, when it really was just very nice shack. Now it is a bigger and nicer "shack". I come here to get my head right, I look out on that water and eat a dozen raw with saltines, and my world is alright again.

I am writing a review primarily on the Oysters. When we first saw the menu we were a little put off that the prices were twice that of our favorite place in Tally. But we had heard how great they were and ordered about four dozen a piece selecting from their wide-selection. Then they came out and we realized that they are twice the oyster for twice the price. I had never seen or eaten oysters this big in my life. And there were truly some of the best I have ever had --- of same quality as the other place I reviewed only bigger. It was like we ordered eight dozen. We sat outside and the ambiance was laid-back and very sea-side fishing townish, which Apalachicola should be the poster child for cute, long-forgotten seaside towns. The service was good and while we were waiting for the food to come out we were greeted by a couple of fishermen who pulled up to the end of Boss's doc to run their fresh-caught oysters through the cleaning machine. Can't get more fresh than that! We also put in an order of buffalo shrimp (before we saw the size of the oysters) and what we got had to of been some of kings of the jumbo shrimp block. These things were equally huge and absolutely succulent. The next time we go we'll probably divide our order between oysters and shrimp!

Really good oysters on the half shell. Got a side salad that was pretty lame but you don't really go for the salad I guess. Wife got the grouper sandwich which was pretty good. Corn fritters were pretty tasty also.

First off, Apalachicola is one of the best places in the country to shack up with some raw oysters. And if thats your plan, Boss Oyster is a must visit whether vacationing in the area or just passing through. This is a great spacious restaurant right on the bay, with great views of the boats passing by. The oysters are a little pricey, but if you only have one shot at the local oyster experience, you can't really go wrong with this place, so suck it up, and slurp em' down! And as a plus, as another reviewer said if you are used to northeast prices, you probably find this place to be a bargain. When you finish you meal here, take some time to stroll down through town and check out all the cool little stores.

I was in town for work and wanted a good meal. Read about the food here and decided to give it a try. Walked in at about 7pm on a Wednesday and it was dead. I had a seat at the bar and ordered the grouper chowder and the shrimp with grits. The server recommended both. The shrimp and grits was awesome, I have never had cheese grits before, but they had a good flavor and texture. The shrimp were cooked well and the sauce was great. The grouper chowder was over priced for the size of the cup but tasted good. The bar area was filthy and the kitchen was as well. The whole place looks like it could use a good cleaning.

I can honestly say I've never had such a horrible experience at a restaurant in my life. A friend and I visited on the 4th of July and were pleased to see an oyster place open for business. We walk in and wait for ten minutes, being ignored by the waiters and the host when tables were clearly available. They did not seem understaffed, so I don't understand why we waited for so long. Eventually, the host came and I politely requested a table outside. She responded with a sullen "Yeah, sure" and showed us to our table. The wait began- 25 minutes before our waitress arrived and took our orders. It took another 15 before drinks arrived (along with saltines. Thank god). We waited for a total of 40 minutes between ordering and getting our food. During that time, our drinks were not refilled, no explanation was provided for the wait, nothing. The raw oysters I'd ordered as an appetizer didn't even arrive. Instead, our food was brought by a brand new, equally sullen waitress who set our food down, refilled our waters upon request, and left with barely a word and no smile. I ordered a half dozen raw oysters and the oyster basket. By the time my raw ones arrived, they were no longer on ice and instead surrounded by water. Serious health concerns aside, it washed away some of the delicious brine. My fried oysters were good, as was the cole slaw. The fries were crinkle cut and reminiscent of Ore-Ida. 15 minutes after we finished eating, the waitress comes by and musters up a cheery smile as she hands us the check. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten to ask for separate checks. Even after apologizing profusely and thanking her, the smile slid off her face and she stomped away (leaving the old bill at our table, which I found strange). 20 minutes later, she comes back with the two checks, takes our cards, returns them, and we are on our way- having just paid 13 dollars for a basket of oysters and six for a half dozen oysters of debatable quality. For the first time in my life, I did not leave a tip. We were completely ignored and neglected by both our waitresses, and I'm not one to reward that. About an hour later, I happen to check my bank statement, only to see that I have been charged an extra four bucks above what my bill is. Fortunately, we are still in Appalachicola, so we head back to the restaurant to get to the bottom of things. The rude hostess is apparently the manager. When politely, albeit irritatedly, explaining the problem, she didn't stop what she was doing or look at us. She just made some incoherent statement about automatic tips. When I asked for clarification, one of our waitresses chimed in from behind her with "it wouldn't be there if you'd left a tip. It'll fall off in two days". This seems like a flat-out lie to me, as my friend tipped a very small amount on her bill and was faced with the same overcharging. Summary: rude staff, long wait, health code violation on the raw oysters, mediocre food, and ridiculously high prices. Go to burger king before ever considering this wretched place.

The oysters were pretty good...but the atmosphere is a little funky. You can get an okay water view though. It wasn't worth the long drive to seek this place out though.

You have to want to get here; you don't happen upon it. That said, let me say I'm happy. It was recommended to me both by a friend who has cooked professionally, and by my wife's cousin, whose taste I trust. The views of the water are beautiful. They have a cat named Rosie whom they feed real seafood. The real seafood for the humans is excellent. I had a platter which consisted of oysters, shrimp, scallops and grouper, with very good corn fritters. The salad before dinner was good, too. Just good fresh greens. I ordered it with oil and vinegar, but went to work creating my own Crystal's vinaigrette at the table. (That is, I put together a vinaigrette with Crystal hot sauce.) Our service was great. Kudos to Lisa, from England by way of New Jersey, who works as a vet assistant during the week and at Boss Oyster on the weekend. Bonus: the views, should you sit outside, are really satisfying.

The food here was OK (just OK), but the service was b-a-d! And there was not a smiling face among any of the employees. Total downer. We ate at other places in the area with better food, better service, friendlier staff.

The BEST oysters ever! Sorry SF, but I've never seen 'em done like this (except I did have some decent bakers at Hogs). Named in the top 10 oyster houses in the country (along w/ Tadich, Swan, and Monterey Fish House), they've got them every which way- raw, roasted, fried, steamed, or baked. Of the bakers, we stuffed ourselves w/ Oysters Rockefeller (sauteed spinach, onion, garlic & Parmesan), Oysters a la Artie (blue crab, artichoke, Monterey Jack), and Oysters Bienville (shrimp, mushrooms, garlic, cheddar). We had to order some straight up, where it's just slather & suck (slather on the cocktail & horseradish and suck 'em down) and I even had my first raw oyster shooter (an oyster w/ a dash of tabasco, cocktail, horseradish, served w/ some vodka in a shot glass). They name some of the suggested oysters on the menu after the people that invent them... there are even a few from around the country. The one bummer about east coast oysters is you can't eat them year round... only in the months with R (cold water). Boss Oyster is pretty much a wooden shack on the Apalachicola River in BFE Florida, complete w/ fishing boats and briny aromas, but they're shuckin' is good!

We went for dinner on 10/30. Service was very good. Yes, the oysters are huge, but they are even bigger at Papa Joe's. I ordered the shrimp 'n' grits--spicy and delicious. For a bit smaller of an oyster and a way smaller price, check out Eddy Teach's on St. George. We went there twice!

Pretty average. Not terrible, not great. Friendly staff. Waterfront but with hungry birds everywhere. Gas station-level bathrooms. Hubby liked his fish tacos "fine". My grilled shrimp was ho-hum. "Meh" is all that comes to mind.

Expectations for presentation and content were high. Presentation was poor. No pride. The salad came in a small bowl full of croutons. The five and beans in a styrofoam cup. The chargrilled oysters were edible, a far cry from New Orleans' restaurants.

Service was very slow. My husband and I sat outside. The section we sat in had vinyl table cloths that were old and nasty. Our appetizer came after our oyster tacos. The oyster tacos were not worth 16 dollars.

My family each enjoyed their food. My youngest daughter and I both had the Journeys End sandwich (shrimp, oyster and scallop po boy) and it was way more food than expected. If I go back, thats more than enough to share. Tea was good, place was nice looking, although I didn't care for the slightly unsanitary way they set up their tables with vinyl tablecloths and ceramic tiles (it tripped food and they didn't do a good job of keeping it clean) Service is scattered, but well meaning.

Visited Boss Oyster 8-12-15. One of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever been a part of. Family of 17. We were served drinks and 6 of them were FULL of ants. (10-25 in each drink). The food is all frozen fried/or old inventory. Grouper Chowder smelled old and "fishy". Not fresh. Nothing fresh. (Should have known when everything on the menu says Fried Only...that means frozen/old. ) When we walked in and no one was in here...we should have known it wasn't good. To bad a location like this doesn't have good food. Extremely disappointed!!!!

Just got here. Wow with the rude waitress. I'm scared she's like a Marine Drill Sergeant! Rudest bossy bitch waitress ever! Maybe that's why it's called Boss Oyster. Do you have PBR? no! the beer is on the back of the menu!!! Rude rude rude! No asking me if there's a beer to suggest! She flipped the menu over and rudely said our beer is on the back! Food is good but not worth this bullshit!!! Been coming her six years and have never experienced such a rude waitress! Her name is April! I ate all I could I was scared that she'd beat my ass if I didn't! I won't come back here ever again!

Fresh seafood and friendly service. We sat outside and my 8 year old daughter loved watching the boats pass by, crabs play on the dock, and talking to the seagulls. I had basket with scallops, shrimp, and oysters--all fresh and very tasty. We are from Louisiana, so we are hard to impress with good seafood, but I thought it was delicious. Would come here again! Ps--try and oyster shooter!!!!

Ughhh this place was a big disappointment. We arrived early on a Friday night and were seated on the back patio which was heated for the winter. Our waitress was friendly and took our orders quickly but then basically disappeared. We could see her washing windows throughout the restaurant instead of delivering our food. My mother, who was pretty hangry, provided an ongoing monologue of where she was and what she was doing - "Ok, now she's washing that window...she's done...moving on...nope! Found a tough spot!" Other waiters seemed more attentive. When the food finally came I was almost shocked - a "basket" of shrimp was like 7 pieces of shrimp on a skimpy plate that wasn't even filled all the way!! And it was like $17!! Don't go here- way too expensive for what you get and the service is terrible.

  • Joseph U.

Service was decent. Grouper sandwich had a tiny piece of fish lost in a huge bun. Red beans and rice side had no rice and was runny. Wife had grits and shrimp with ham. Good portion and she liked it. Scenery was nice on the water. In all fairness it is a oyster restaurant and we didn't order oysters.

Our party of five ( 2 adults and 3 kids) went to Boss Oyster around 2:00pm. We could see empty seats on the deck but we're asked to wait to be "seated shortly". We saw numerous family's leave the restaurant and after 20 minutes we asked about our table.. Again we were told we would be seated shortly. We finally left after waiting over 30 minutes, when my husband over heard that the kitchen was "closed".. We asked the hostess why she had us wait knowing we would not be served. She claims "she is only allowed to tell us what they Managment says.. And they told her to tell ppl that they will be seated shortly."

Dude, please. If you're looking for good food in Apalachicola, there are at least 10 better places in easy walking distance. Forget what your friends told you about how you MUST go here. Skip it. Sadly, I have to admit I've had basically every dish on the menu, and truly, nothing is really above mediocre, and the service pretty well matches the food. To boot, prices have gone up, and quality has gone down. Walk down the street or around the corner and wander into pretty much any other place and you'll leave happier. Location is really the only redeeming quality Boss Oyster has going for it.

Two years ago we stopped here and loved it! I'm not sure if there's been a change of management, but this place is now a huge disappointment. We're hoping to find something better in the area and won't be back. Such a shame, too. We'd hyped this place up to so many people..

Looking forward to a fresh shrimp po boy, I stopped in boss as it was water front. With a nice view overlooking the bay and bridge, we chose an outside table. The hostess greeted us and sat us quickly and the server was prompt with our beverages to quench our thirsts after being out in the seeding sun. We placed our order of two po boys one shrimp and the other oyster. With watering mouths we waited in anticipation of a scrumptious meal to fill our famished bodies. The moment arrived and I peered down at my meal that I hoped to devour quickly only to realize the shrimp still had tails in them!?! Really??? I can't help but wonder what lazy cook would leave tails on the shrimp on a sandwich. So I began to try to peel the fried shrimp which had been so deep fried that the tails sauntered off each shrimp and we're not able to remove as quickly and easily as broiled or grilled shrimp. After spending too much time trying to peel the shrimp, I placed the lone lettuce leaf and one simple tomato and soured pickle on top the bread than piled the shrimp with removed tails upon the weak toppings. I then took a bite as the shrimp fell off but a I managed to trap one and taste the over powering salt. Was there anything else to taste? Not sure I tried again, salt! I them attempted to bury the saltiness with hot sauce but it aided very little. After that I bathed the shrimp in cocktail sauce throwing out the wilted line leaf and tomato. I still tasted salt! I managed to eat the remains shrimp by drowning them in cocktail sauce. Time to get a new cook!

Awesome seafood!!!! The seafood platter was fantastic! The waitstaff was polite and super accommodating! We ate lunch on the patio at a table we picked overlooking the river and enjoyed it! Love the creative way they keep the birds away. Definitely will be back!

Oysters and the crab cakes were DELICIOUS. We got there at 8:30 and they close at 9pm. The server forgot to put in one of our party member's order. At the time he realized it the kitchen was closed, and they refused to cook her order. Good thing she ate raw oysters. Overall the service was mediocre and the food hardly compensated.

  • Robert L.

Very good food, fast friendly service, good local fresh caught seafood. The prices are very reasonable. ... sit outdoor with a view of the bay. The chargrilled oysters are a deal at $13 per dozen. ... steamed shrimp, excellent. The grouper chowder tasted a little watery, was not that good. Overall excellent lunch!

    (4)
  • Paige G.

We sat outside, our food arrived late, and the oysters weren't even good. The food looked bland and one of my family members said that the clam chowder was terrible. There were birds everywhere and some came very close to other customers foods. The place outside looked terrible and somewhat broken down. However, the inside was nice. There's a bar, but I didn't get anything since I don't drink.

  • Barb H.

Much too expensive for what it is. The oysters are bigger and better up the road at a place called up the creek. Service very mediocre - would never come back.

Don't. Just don't. This used to be one of the best restaurants in the area. The past 3 years it's gone steadily downhill. Today was the last straw. Grouper basket swimming in grease that had collected at the bottom of the basket. Angry waitress who insisted on leaving the outside door open so other waitresses and customers had to keep vlosing it. Cheese grits straight out of the cheapest possible box. Rotten lemon. Rotten lettuce. Disgraceful.

Two dirty dishes. ..and an extremely rude waitress. Marcey will be quick to inform you she has been there 3 years and knows "everything." The food is excellent and the other servers were great like the hostess but our waitress was rude as anything.

  • Clista H.

The service I would say was pretty good, our server couldn't have been sweeter and very accommodating! The food on the other hand...no thank you, I wouldn't eat it for free. We ordered the parmesan oysters which were actually really good! We also got raw on the half she'll that were fine I guess...not great. My niece ordered a cheese burger (I know, but she's only 11) she didn't like it she said it was very dry and she's pretty easy to please. My sister, older niece and myself all ordered the blue crab. It was so bad. I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it was overly coated in some blah flavored thick batter. I've never had it served that way before. There wasn't a description of the meal so I was just under the assumption it wouldn't be fried, I'm not sure why anyone would fry blue crab since the meat is so sweat and tender when prepare fresh and properly. My mom had the featured sandwich with the variety of seafood (I can't remember the name) it was also extremely breaded. The food sat heavily in our stomachs and I could feel the oil coming through my pores. We weren't there in the peak season so that may be some of the reason for the oysters being lackluster. I often feel there must be something to be said about the quality of the food for them to feel it was necessary drape it in heavy batter. We heard from a local that she preferred Boss to other places and informed us that all of the places were good. I feel badly for her if she thinks that is good seafood. I live in Iowa and we even have better seafood in the middle of the United States then they were serving at this place off the coast. I'm hoping this seaside local kitchen can pull it together and maybe focus on quality and not personal convenience because at that rate they are sure to lose that great waitress they have who's welcoming smile kept us there without leaving after the first bite!

My favorite place in the area for sure. Right on the water, plenty of outdoor seating, perfect service, good crowd, cool bar, and superb food! I had the journey's end sandwich and raw oysters. It poured rain while we ate outside under one of the covered seating areas. That cooled it down and added to an already great experience. Will absolutely return..immediately!

  • Krysta B.

I give this place a 3 because the server was sweet and attentive. I arrived late to our dinner party but received my food rather quickly so I could still eat with the company. While the service was good other things we're not... Such as the menu! The menu was quite large and had not one vegetable option as a side or entree. The salad is only iceberg which has no nutritional value at all! The blackened fish is very good as are the oysters but lots of fried food and limited to nothing healthy! The lights on the patio were broken so we literally are dinner in the dusk and later complete darkness. Three stars for the oysters and the service but nothing more without that I was unimpressed but enjoyed the family company!

  • Ted D.

Okay the friendliness of the hostess and wait staff immediately had me eating out of their hands (and literally too). Felt like I had known our waitress forever. Very forthright about what were her favorites and she steered us right! We sat outside in the early evening overlooking the dock and the view of the river is superb and exactly the type of homey, unpretentious place we came to Apalach (St George Island) for. It was fun to watch the little crabs scurrying around the dock and the shrimp boats making their way up the river after a long day. Chamber of Commerce views! The oysters on the half were plump and tasty, the heads-on shrimp were huge, sweet and some of the best we had all week, shrimp and grits were outstanding but the real unexpected standouts were the grilled oysters from the hardwood grill. OMG! The big, plump oysters take on the smoky taste from the oak (or whatever), are slightly charred yet retain the flavor of the oyster and do not lose the juiciness. Of course the butter and cheese don't hurt either. These were so outstanding that we ordered a second dozen. Give this 3 G's. Great food, service and location!!!

  • Morgan M.

I am tempted to lower the rating further just because compared to the rave reviews this place got, from other family members, I was unimpressed. But judging on it's own merits, it was no better or worse than any other oyster place in Apalachicola. We had Key West, Bienville, Capt. Jack, Rockefeller, and raw oysters and I appreciated the selection of baked but the Bienville (which were very good) were the only ones unique to Boss Oyster and I thought the Capt. Jack we had elsewhere were better. The biggest thing that pissed me off was that we ordered a side of onion rings and they were $7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR ONION RINGS???? I could've gotten more oysters. Anyway, that assured we would not be returning. They do have a good view and a nice spot but they were overall higher priced than other oyster bars and the onion rings were a tipping point.

Boss is fine but there are better places in town, that's for sure! I'm a big fan of raw oysters and the ones at Boss are awesome, but (yes, there's a but) the price is over $3 more per dozen than other places less than 1/4 mile away. We also tried the Key West oysters, corn fritters, red beans and rice, onion rings, and cole slaw. All of the food was very good but again, it's pricier than other local places with the same quality food. My husband, who is gluten free, was able to eat the raw oysters, the Key West oysters, the red beans and rice, and the cole slaw. The menu is pretty obvious on what those with gluten free diets can eat. Nothing fried, with breading, etc. The service was another point of contention for me. The place wasn't very busy and we waited 45 minutes for our food. 45 minutes for raw oysters and things out of the fryer. Really now? The deck/patio area is set up nicely but the gulls are absolutely ridiculous. Boss strung lines across to the gulls can't get to you easily but that doesn't stop them from swooping in and scaring the crap out of you! Bottom line: Great, but expensive oysters that you can get them for less and with better service down the street.

Stopped in for late lunch experienced the worst service ever. No follow up on lateness of food or drink. Watched as other tables were seated, ate, paid & left while we waited. No one said a word as to why it took so long, why no one followed up. Holy cow. Enter at your own risk. Food was not worth the wait.

MEMORABLY BAD Recently had Sunday night dinner at Boss Oyster with a large party who had eaten there happily many times in the past. Where can I start? The service was abysmal. There was a very long wait to get our drinks and food. The waitress was clueless about the wine and liquor menu, the salads arrived about 30 minutes after we had finished our main courses. The waitress told us that they had to go out and buy lettuce for the salads. Too much information. Unlike previous visits, the food was memorably poor. Stay away, unless you are more interested in having stories to tell than having a decent dining experience.

Everything to eat is expensive in a coastal/resort town. And even when it's pricey, Boss Oyster serves most meals in red plastic baskets and paper. That said, their Charred on the half-shell with Parmesan menu item will have you making mmmmm noises. Their specialty is oysters...the other seafood is extra pricey for the mediocre results.

This is a good place for oysters. My oysters were fresh and tasty. Our server Tracy was so sweet! I enjoyed some of the grouper basket and the chicken tender basket. The seating was a little cramped and humid for our 7 person group but it was ok. I recommend it.

This very well known, high traffic seafood restaurant has been a staple in Apalachicola for years. Although you may wind up sitting next to a caravanning Russian who is trekking across the country rather than a local, the food is as good as it gets. Fresh seafood cooked to perfection with several specialty oysters to choose from, my favorite being the Oyster Captain Jack.

Delicious! If you are in the Apalach/St. George Area definitely eat here. My boyfriend and I were not very satisfied with the food on St. George, however we loved this meal in Apalach. We had the buffalo shrimp as a starter, I had fried bay scallops, and he had tuna.... All we highly recommend.

We were last here about 3 years ago. Back then it was no-questions-awesome 5 stars. Still top notch oysters, but service has slipped a bit. Confession: I don't take FL oysters raw, I like them steamed firm and hot. We had: Oysters steamed and baked, oyster taco, shrimp (forgot which type). We were seated in a separate building, and it took a bit of time for the servers to commute back and forth from the kitchen. All versions of the oysters were top notch, perhaps a little cooler than optimal after the commute from the kitchen Summary: Still great oysters, but slipped a notch on service. The overall impression is that they're transitioning into a touristy warehouse raw bar like those that dot Panama City Beach. It's losing the cozy small waterfront feel it had. We're interested to try competitors: Up the Creek, Hole in the Wall, and Indian Pass Raw Bar.

THIS PLACE WAS REALLY GOOD! Great service, even for our large party, and great food! We ordered a little of everything; raw and cooked oysters, buffalo shrimp, sandwiches, shrimp baskets, etc. Cold beer? Yes please! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the grouper chowder ( I can tell a gravy mix a mile out). It was bland and not good. Other than that everything else was fantastic. The ambiance was also fantastic. It was very beachy and had lots of room with different patio areas and a water front view. This was absolutely the best seafood we had on our trip and it's not too far from St. George so you can make a day trip!

Not sure why, but Apalachicola is part of the "Forgotten Coast" of Florida. I've been here several times and I haven't forgotten it, basically because of the oysters and Boss Oyster is one of the better of the many oyster houses. I don't think it is as good as it used to be and the prices are somewhat higher than the other oyster houses that dot the local area, but Boss has a little bit more pizzazz to the preparation and offering which are accompanied by a wider range of condiments than do the others. Maybe it's just me, but on oysters I like a choice of hot sauce offerings, particularly avoiding Tabasco in favor of Crystal and several others which some of the oyster houses don't offer. As for cooked oysters, the offerings are large, about 10, with my favorite being Oysters Bienville. Though Boss as well as most restaurants in Apalachicola is all about oysters, Boss also has other seafood servings along with a regular rib eye though when I eat meat I opt for their Carpetbagger which is a rib eye covered with oysters, onions and mushrooms. The part I like is the atmosphere, sitting there dining right next to the boat that caught your meal.

This place really has character. The dining area where we ate was outside but covered. Very rustic and seafaring decor which was apealing to us. The wife did the anti-seafood thing and had a chicken salad sandwich. I had raw oysters and an oyster po-boy. Really enjoyed the raw oysters and the po-boy was excellent. The only negative was the fried oysters were a little too brown. Nice surroundings, good service and top notch oysters. We'll be back! [Visited on 20Jun13]

We ordered the seared tuna and a grouper sandwich. The tuna was prepared correctly but then ruined with the inclusion of wasabi paste. Yes Virginia. ..that crap in tube that you get from Piggly Wiggly, not the real deal. I mean, how difficult can it be?

Performing my oyster-only diet during a recent Apalach visit, I used the Boss Oyster with amazing success! Personally, I'm fond of the Two Oyster Taco's using flour tortilla as a delivery system. For the hard core, go for fresh shucked. Many cold beers needed, I mean available. At Boss I hear there's other excellent seafood choices too. An excellent location with very nice service.

Big fresh fried flounder just fell off the bone. Huge covered the whole plate. Corn fritters was a nice touch. The baked potato could have cooked longer. The grilled redfish was full of flavor and moist. The cheese grits was lacking in cheese. The salad was ok. The service was terrible. The girl was very pleasant but slow as molasses. Ordered key lime pie it was real no cheesecake.

We wandered in while looking for a different. We were sure glad we did. The menu was awesome and fresh, fresh, fresh. Many dishes to choose from. If you dare put lemon, tarter sauce or cocktail sauce on anything, you should be hauled out for committing a criminal act. The corn nuggets were awesome and a tasty change from the traditional blah hush puppies. There are a number of side to choose from. The smoked fish spread appetizer was a departure from the traditional fish flavored mayonnaise "dip". It was all fish, meaty, and not over seasoned. I was lucky that day to get some FRESH raw Apalachicola oysters. The view of the river adds to the appeal of the place. The service was excellent! I would & will definitely make the four hour drive to eat here again.

Food = 3 (the oysters were okay, but the price gouging left a bitter taste in my mouth) Price = 2 (see above... 9.00-12.00 for HALF dozen... what?) Experience = 2 (it's a dark bar with only a few seats. So, if you're trying to get that table with a view... be ready to wait a long while. Overall, I didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling I should get from a top rated spot. They brag about all the accolades... looks to me like they've forgotten how they got them. I really wanted to like this place... I'm disappointed.

I'm going to start this off by saying that I DON'T EAT SEAFOOD. Which means that I was definitely at a disadvantage by coming to Boss. My food was terrible, and we sat inside, which I wouldn't recommend. However, I'm giving it 3 stars because my family all got seafood and said it was great.

Was going to Up The Creek Oyster Bar but it was closed and lucky for us. We went to the Boss Oyster Bar and had the some of the best raw oysters I've ever had. The fried oysters were also the best I ever had. The raw were salty sweet and full of flavor. The fried had a great breading that kept the juices in and they had a smooth buttery flavor. Finally we had the seafood gumbo and once again excellent. It was not a roux based gumbo, it was full of oysters and shrimp and had a great flavor. There have been some complaints about the service, but we had no problem. We are in the South and are in no hurry. Great oysters and I wish I was closer so I could go back more often

I went in just to have a beer while daughter looked at boats and found a very tacky refined restaurant with great fresh oysters, nice menu, knowledgeable and attentive waiter. Food was fantastic although we only had appetizers; and think that I left to the tap room to eat dinner(this was a mistake) we came back and eat more. This place should be in drive, dinners , etc. Chef owner.
