Outstanding... Enjoyed a "Chef's Tasting" paired with recommended flight of wine with my wife for our anniversary at the Chef's table. Chefs Kyle and Mike made us feel as if we were in our own kitchen while presenting course after course of the most amazing bites. They make a great team and it was a treat to watch how well they work together. Incredible discipline and professionalism while appearing to have a great time... Additionally, the service from David was perfect, mixing the right amount of humor and attention. The meal consisted of a fantastic lobster bisque, their incredible alternate take on a Caprese salad, perfectly cooked and elegantly presented halibut and wagyu ribeye, with intermediate courses of sorbet followed by an incredible strawberry and frozen yogurt dessert, all paired with exceptional wine selections capped by an amazing sauterne. It was everything I wanted for our evening, and lived up to very high expectations. Thanks Kyle and Mike! Make reservations early and enjoy.... C
Absolutely amazing restaurant!!! Staff are fantastic and food was stupendous. You have to go!! Well worth the price!
Had dinner here with my husband last Friday when we were staying at the Essex for a long weekend. Holy. Cow. First off, I loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in. Small, cozy, whimsically-decorated, not at all pretentious. You have the option of two tasting menus (3 or 6 courses), which are both incredibly reasonably priced. Before ordering, the executive chef visits your table to explain the menu, let you know what's new that evening, and answer any questions you might have. My husband and I did the three-course - all six dishes we ordered were totally delicious, but one from each set was a stand-out. For the appetizers we got the Hudson Valley foie gras and prime deckle steak pairing (husband) and the duck rillette (me). The duck was great, the foie/steak was sublime. For entrees he had the Berkshire pork chop (really really good), and I had the quail. Sheer deliciousness. And then for desserts I got something citrusy which was tasty and tart which I love, and he had the "beer and chocolate" which was so good we haven't stopped talking about it. I also appreciate that their wine list runs the gamut from $30 to $200 a bottle, with plenty of offerings available by the glass. Go eat there as soon as possible.

Essex Chinese Restaurant

Fast friendly service. Food ready in 10 minutes on a Saturday night. They scored a 97 on their VT Health Department restaurant score in February. Crab ragoons were good but not the best. Could have been hotter. Chicken fingers weren't crispy but tasted good but again not the best. Pork fried rice was good. Could have had more taste to it though but pork portion was good. Good portion size of rice. Generals chicken was not to my liking but it wasn't bad either. A different sauce that wasn't for me but had mostly chicken instead of breading. Boneless spareribs were hot and thick pieces. Best dish was the shrimp lo mien. I liked it better than my usual Chinese spot. Tasted great was hot and good amount of shrimp. When I order lo mien that's what I want it to be. Give this restaurant a chance. Friendly service good food priced right will bring you back and the 97 score is a plus to me
I was hungry looking for good chinese and I pass by this restaurant never try before I finally decided have a try but it was awful... The food doesn't match the expensive price, not recommended... It is very quiet when I ordered ...
We came here as it was recommended by friends. The food and service were great. It was very casual and pricing was very affordable. Will definitely come again!

Sukho Thai

The service here is awful. I called to make a take out order for my family on Fathers Day. We were looking forward to the delicious food that Sukho Thai has. When I called I was asked to hold. The guy threw down the phone and I waited 6 1/2 minutes. I heard him come back to the phone and hang up on me. My husband called right back and they asked him to hold again and he refused. Told them that we were hung up on and asked they place our order. They did! I live in Essex and frequent this restaurant. I am extremely disappointed that we are treated poorly by the same person every time.."the man with the attitude". I hear the same from many others. I believe he is one of the owners and I feel he should be replaced. The food is too good to have such horrible customer service.
"Filling and inexpensive" is what my husband said. We got a delicious noodle dish with shrimp (can't remember which one but it wasn't pad Thai) and the fried rice with pineapple... So so so good! They were packed and only two very busy waiters. Good enough service.
I tried to go for dinner tonight and as we walked in the manager sent us away informing us that the kitchen stops serving at 6:45, okay that makes complete sense that a restaurant would stop serving dinner at dinner time. . . But then we stepped outside and we realized in wasn't even 6:45 yet! I am not one to hold a grudge but this isn't the first time I have felt unwelcome at your establishment. If you haven't read Setting The Table by Danny Meyer (which based on my experience I'm quite sure you have not) check it out. Your food is pretty good but the front of house needs some work.

El Gato Cantina

4 Park St
Essex, 05452
Service was slow. The food was good, basic Vermont Mexican. I had the taco platter (choice of 2 taco's with rice and beans). My wife had an enchilada and burrito plate. LOTS of food. We should have simply ordered two taco's for me and her the enchilada plate and shared the rice and beans. The real test is the Margarita's and, unfortunately, El Gato failed. We started with a Horni Toad's as it had no mix. Hornitos, Cointrois, lemon and lime (I think). Nine bucks for a small glass. Something tasted off, and we think it was adding the lemon versus just lime. We switched to the house margarita for our second. Probably a bit better. The 16oz glass helped!! The sweet and sour mix was not the best, but not bad. The chips, salsa and the queso dip were excellent.
This is NOT the El Gato I visited in Burlington! Yes, the menu is basically the same but the food quality, the space and the service was so much better! It's almost a different restaurant! I did order myself a fantastic margarita from their extensive drink menu, I highly recommend giving the special margaritas a try. I think I went with the "Dirty Old Man" and absolutely loved it. I like my 'ritas a bit on the sour side and this was just right. We ordered the combo plates and all of the food fit the bill. It's a lot more on the authentic mexican side than most local spots. The chile rellanos were amazing and I almost wanted to order another. I like the shredded chicken they use as it really takes on all of the flavors used in their burritos and enchiladas. Salsa is perfectly balanced and they bring the chips out right away. I never had to hunt down a server as they were always very attentive. The place still matches the look and feel of the old Lincoln Inn but I do like the use of the space here far more than the Burlington spot. It feels a lot less crowded and it includes a lot of nice window seating. If like me you didn't like the one in Burlington, at least give the Essex Junction location a try.
First time here and all I can say is, no. Never going back. I'm a fan of real Mexican - especially having been raised in a Latin environment for a majority of my youth. I have a high standard, and even make my own Latin dishes when I'm in the mood. According to friends, this place was good. So here I go. Decor was cute, generic, but cute. The waitress was mousey and very irritating throughout the night. The drink was subpar, and tasted only of tequila, even though I ordered a mixed drink. The meat was dry, and the salsa roja tasted like marinara sauce from a can mixed in with some ketchup - just no. Don't even get me started on the rice...I mean what was that? Proper rice is not that hard to make people! Basically, if you're cool with this food, good for us. But if you've had legit Mexican, let alone Latin food - don't bother.

Wicked Wings

118 Pearl St
Essex, 05452
This is my first review on yelp. The reason I'm reviewing Wicked Wings is NOT because they're wings are decent, but because their employees are rude. My hope is that whoever owns Wicked Wings takes the time to view the reviews on yelp to see how they can improve their business. I ordered take out with a friend around 2PM on a Saturday. The restaurant had four 2 tops & one of the 2 tops was just sitting down to review the menu, so the place was probably busier than usual but not CRAZY busy. I was browsing the takeout menu while my friend ordered. Being only the second time I'd been to Wicked Wings, I thought I'd ask the guy who was standing at the counter to take our order what his favorite wing sauce was. I barely opened my mouth to ask the question & was waved off & told "I can't talk to you right now" as the guy punched an amount into the cash register. If it wasn't for my friend who had already ordered & wanted wings, I would have told this guy how rude he is & walked out without supporting the business. It's beyond irritating that people in a service based industry think that they can be straight up rude to people & not have it affect their business' success. The wings were decent, but the bad taste left in my mouth from the behavior of the rude guy taking my order led to me taking the time out of my busy Saturday to actually log on to yelp to tell this business & potential patrons that you can get better wings & more friendly service at other establishments in the area. Highly disappointed.
There are so few places around here that can do a fried pickle justice and this is one of them! I got them as a side with a huge, open flame cooked burger. Perfect smoky char. It's pretty standard bar fare, but done well and the prices are good. Plus, the folks working are total sweethearts. Next time we'll try the actual wings!
The good news is that the portions are pretty big, nice and attentive wait staff. Ordered the traditional Buffalo wings but found them very oily and not so appealing. My friend had the barbecue wings which were better. Ok place but wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.

On Tap Bar & Grill

4 Park Street
Essex, 05452
This place is ok, not bad, but not great. We went on a Wednesday night while they had free music playing. It was really loud so we sat out on the deck, which was pretty nice. The waitress seemed busy and distracted at first, but then seemed to be more attentive after we got our drinks. Maybe she had a high maintenance table somewhere else? Anyway, the food was decent, nothing spectacular. My husband got a brownie sunday that was just so so. I am a baker with high expectations for desserts so take that with a grain of salt. I think this place is probably good for people who like sports bars and lots of people. Just not really my kind of place. It's definitely by no means bad, just not somewhere I would usually go.
There are so many great beers on tap it's so hard to decide on one. Had to stay for three! The honey chipotle wings were so crisp and sticky sweet with just enough heat. OMG! Have to go back for more . The burger and fries were pretty good too.
This is my "Cheers". My group, which went from four to two always gets the five star treatment. Food is made to order and they take the time to know you. I love Vinny, and the other staff who make this lunch or bad day appearance memorable each and every time. It will hold memories for me I will never forget. We all have our "home away from home" and this is hands down--- mine.
