This place looks like a holdover from the 70s. I absolutely love it. I'm from Chicago and up in Chicago donuts taste like crap they're always 2 days old so here they are totally fresh and delicious. Dunkin Donuts you suck.

Love! I grew up coming here every Sunday since my church is next door. Lately I've been going a lot because the guy I'm dating likes it and we meet there for breakfast on occasion. Such a cute, sweet, simple place. I love listening to the old men talk about life over their coffee. And as far as their food, I really enjoy their donuts but I have to say I was mortified when I ordered a bacon, egg, cheese croissant and they heated it up in the microwave. I NEVER use the microwave because I am convinced it causes cancer...so I'll just be sticking to the donuts from now on. Oh, and the boy digs their coffee.

best donuts in Memphis, better than Gibson's.

When I type "donuts" into the Yelp app's "Nearby" search, and only one result appears with the word "Donuts" in the business name, you'd better believe that I am going to target that place first. And once I saw Donald's, I knew that there was no need to try any coffee house or upscale bakery--this is a DONUT SHOP. Old school, the way that it should be. + A blueberry cake which actually tasted like real fruit (whether it was or not), plus quality cake which did not leave behind that starchy coating on my teeth like most cake doughnuts + Basic glazed and chocolate frosted fairly standard but tastily on point +/- Lemon filled: could have skipped this one, because they use that slick, glutinous material rather than lemon custard; however, I appreciate that their filled doughnuts are glazed rather than powdered. If you don't like the filling, just eat around it, and you still have a really good glazed doughnut! +/- Apple fritter in the middle range (trust me, I'm a connoisseur): it needs more apples and cinnamon, but the sweetness and texture are good. I would definitely get the fritter again, along with any other cake or glazed doughnut in Donald's arsenal.

Neat little gem of Memphis. In a convenient location to the midtown area. I was in here early in the morning, the donuts were still hot and fresh. They where a perfect consistency, with nice flaky outer dough. Yummy. The service was good and quick, and the staff was friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves that morning. I will have to stop here again for some donuts and a coffee next time I am in Memphis.

We were visiting Memphis and saw this place and had to try. So glad we did! The staff was friendly and the donuts were AMAZING!!!!! Definitely going back next time we are in town!!

  • Angelo T.

Delicious donuts! I got the glazed donut and my friend the vanilla frosted, both are amazing. The owner is such a nice person. I'll definitely come back next time I come to Memphis. If you speak French, the owner is from France and loves to speak French with the French speaking customers.

  • John H.

They have a nice selection. Everything was fresh and delicious! Not a fan of their white cream. They were a little bland yet still tasty. The two ladies working could use some lessons on smiling and friendly small talk. The place is small and could use better lighting. It felt dingy inside. Overall good food here.

  • Tiffany M.

Amaze-balls! Tried the donut holes--which were delectable by the way and the regular kolache. Good prices and very tasty. If I ever return to Memphis and I'm in the area I'll patronize this place again.

  • Sandy W.

Wow! This place is the first "true" rival to a Shipley's. Donald's IS the real deal. I can't say that any other donut dive in the country could top these! Could not get out of the place without toting some home. Well worth any drive!

I saw the male worker in the kitchen ( which I'm sure is the owner ) used his bare hands to put donuts on a tray Killed my mood for donuts that day :-(

Incredibly fresh donuts at a great price! Great selections and I normally get chocolate Yoohoo to go with the donuts :)

  • Holly J.

This is my favorite donut shop because of their plethora of cake donut choices (the maple and the blueberry are my picks). And the kolaches... you can't forget those golden delicious packets of goodness. Skip the lines at the more popular places! Do yourself a favor and check this place out. The service is really nice, and they're always willing to pull something from the back for you if they have it.

Contributing to the cause here, cause I Iike this place and it's donuts are delicious. Must try the coconut donut.

  • David M.

Another great place to get donuts. Many times, before church, it's a great place for me to run in and get some donuts before our services begin. The people running the place are nice and it's a good location.

  • Hannah G.

One word: Kolachies. I'd heard about these from my husband who spent some of his childhood in Texas where they are pretty popular. They are basically croissant wrapped sausages with cheese in the middle, and they are delicious. The donuts are always very fresh tasting, and they have a ton of variety. I always get classics like glazed and chocolate, but if I want something different I LOVE their blueberry cake donut. SO good. Most of their cream/jelly filled ones are delicious, too. It looks old-school, but it's a great little shop, and it sure beats Dunkin' Donuts.

  • William O.

DEPRESSO - that's what you call sad coffee! It also happens to be what they serve here! I stopped in for a coffee and a couple donuts! The coffee was super old and had been sitting on the burner for a long long long time. The donuts were ok, I know they make something tree but as we were eating I witnessed one if the workers calling the Kroger bakery next door to order more croissants. Soooo with poor quality and probably thinking this review should have been for Kroger, I would not go here again... It's overpriced as well!

    (1)
  • John G.

Sorry Erica B. I disagree :) If you are looking for the real deal donut shop this is it...it's the old school type donut shop. If I want a good real old school donut I could care less about neon signs and grizz paraphernalia...I want Donald's. Through the years and places you've lived you had different local donut shops that had an excellent _______(choice donut goes here)... every donut I've had here is that. Gibsons has a special place in my heart... They are a novelty, with novelty donuts... And open 24 hours. I go to Gibsons for a sugar rush... I go to Donald's for a damned good donut

A lot of people can tell you where the best donuts in Memphis are. Unless those people say Donald's, they are wrong. 5 Stars is not enough for the consistently best donuts I've ever had in my life. I've had lots of donuts, I look for donuts in lots of places, places you'd expect to have great donuts, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles. None of them are this good. Now, everyone might be expecting me to start talking about unusual toppings, but there are no bacon topped donuts here, there are no special pumpkin spice seasonal donuts here. Remember watching the Simpsons and seeing that donut with pink frosting and sprinkles and thinking "That cartoon donut is probably perfect. It must be light and fluffy as air, with creamy frosting and just enough sprinkles to cover every bite but not fall off and make a mess. If only I could ever have a donut so good, but it probably doesn't exist." It does exist and it is here. And that's only the pink frosting donut, because they do have donuts with strawberry frosting, the best strawberry donut frosting ever. Tons of flavor in this frosting, so get it on a cake donut and enjoy it. Another favorite here is the blueberry cake donut. They make it perfectly, it is the best blueberry cake donut ever. My favorite donut is the chocolate frosted white cream filled. My friend loves all the filled donuts here. You can't go wrong here. Next is the great selection of breakfast sandwiches they have. Egg, cheese, and bacon or sausage on a croissant, warm and delicious and better than the chain donut place (obviously). They also have kolaches, which are pretty much sausages wrapped in pastry, which sounds fantastic. No one can read that and say, "no thanks." It's great. But here is a little hidden gem, the croissants with ham and cheese baked inside of them! They bake it in! It's baked inside! The people that run the place are great. Nice and polite and helpful. To recap: these are the best donuts I've ever had. It's not a joke or an exaggeration. I will miss this place when I leave this city. I don't think I'll ever find donuts this good again.

Wish I could give 6 stars based on the service alone. Great lady at the front of the house could not have been more pleasant and accomodating. I dropped by on a whim yesterday morning to pick up a couple of dozen to take to the office. The smell alone was great! They have a huge selection of donuts, muffins and KALACHES!! All very fresh and bigger than most other commercial bakeries. I had never tried a fresh Pineapple Fritter before and I will be going back for more of those babies! Also tried their Jalopeno Kalache, fresh out of the oven, pipping hot and amazing!! Thanks for a great experience, great donuts and for treating me so special. BIG FAN of DONALD's DONUTS!!

Stopped in today on a nostalgic visit. Sat at the same counter I did back in the early 70's went it was a Dunkin Donuts. Apple fritter was great, and the cup of Community coffee was surprisingly good (never had or even heard of Community Coffee before) There is a big cooler with drinks where the cigarette machine was. And a small table is where the Pong, yes Pong, machine was. Damn I am old. :)

Seriously delicious. I love their cream cheese filled donut. Small building, quick/efficient staff, FABULOUS donuts. No need for anything more.

I do not like donuts. I think donuts are the cheap, tasteless, crass versions of beignets. I cannot look at a donut without cringing. Having said that, I ate three donuts from this place. I walked out of Donald's looking like a coke head with coke on his upper lip. That is all I have to say.

I was in Memphis last weekend for the Memphis in May International BBQ Cooking Championship and heard all the buzz about "Gibson`s Donuts" and went there first. I felt it was (ok) but rather ordinary. Very fresh, very sweet, Donuts. Their Honey Glazing in 3 times thicker then KrispyKreme which for my taste, was a little over the top. We stopped at Donald`s Donuts on Union Ave when we saw people waiting outside the door. Wow! I could`nt believe that I actually found a Donut comparable to Shipley`s Donuts in Houston, TX which IMO, is the best Donut in the Galaxy, period! The Coffee at Donalds Donuts is equally good too. My advice, if your visiting Memphis to eat BBQ, see Sun Records, or Graceland, (and) you love Donuts, look no farther then Donald`s Donuts. I was tempted to take home a few dozen when I flew back to South FL.

If you read my reviews, you know how I feel about donuts. I love them. I daydream about them. I could eat a whole freakin' box by myself. Seriously, I have to employ the highest form of willpower and constraint in order to limit myself to 2 or maybe 3 at a time. I'm addicted. That said, Donald's is way up there on my donut-eating experiences top 5 list. They might be #2 right behind Gibson's. There is a Donald's on my way to work and there were days when I was pregnant that my car just naturally veered right into the parking lot before I even realized what I was doing. Blueberry cake, strawberry cake, cinnamon, glazed, chocolate glazed, and crullers somehow made their way into my hands and into my tummy. Divine! Maybe that's why my baby, now almost 2, loves sweets so much.

  • Christian H.

I don't really like donuts, but Donald's has the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had anywhere (including Sheetz, and I used to eat at Sheetz in PA every day). Their croissants and biscuits are exactly as flaky and soft as they should be, their meats are spicy and juicy, and they clearly use real eggs - not some imitation egg-flavored food product. A croissant amply-appointed with sausage, egg, and cheese is also like $2, which you can't beat with a stick. Love it.

  • Erica B.

I'm going to start by stating do not judge a book by its cover. If you do, you will simply pass Donald's by without a second thought. Why, you ask? Well, to put it mildly, Donald's is nothing to look at folks. In fact, you may question your sanity when walking through the doors and seeing the innards. It is kind of borderline gross. Regardless, get over it and quick cuz Donald's got the goods to back up this ugly exterior (and interior for that matter). I love their blueberry cake donuts. I dream about their crullers. I would punch the person in line in front of me that got dibs on the last chocolate glazed. And the cinnamon donuts? Well, there's not much I wouldn't do to get my hands on one of those bad boys. I only give Donald's 4 stars because as good as they are- they cannot touch Gibson's.

Best donuts in Memphis. But that's not the best part! ONLY place I know of where you can get Kolachies. I stop in a few times a month to get myself something or buy some donuts and/or kolachies for the office. I have found that it's best to call the day before if you want a large order of kolachies, but it's worth your trouble. I don't need to write anymore of a review. This place speaks for itself.

  • Jolynna M.

I totally agree with Tanya T.'s review, Donald's is right up there near the top when it comes to donuts in this town. Located in the former Howard's Donuts building on Union Ave., it is really convenient in the Midtown area. Maybe a little "too" convenient. The donuts are always fresh and I love the glazed. Fresh out of the oven, they are warm little wonders with melt-in-your-mouth sweetness that makes you want to eat an entire box and then take on the world. I wonder if a cop owns it......
