Great Chinese take-out, but a recent visit was disconcerting. I phoned in an order of beef w/ bell pepper and asked if they could make a pork w/ garlic sauce (my favorite and I didn't see it on the menu). The owner said "sure, pork with garlic sauce". I asked that it be extra spicy. When the owners wife brought my order to the counter, she said "beef w/ bell pepper and Szechuan beef?". I said "no, I ordered pork w/ garlic sauce". She looked at her husband and he said "pork w/ garlic sauce". She gave him a funny look and they said something in Chinese. Sure enough, when I got home I had Szechuan beef. I didn't want two beef entrees and (surprise) I know the difference between pork and beef. I felt he knew very well that he was not giving me what I ordered. Fortunately, the dish was excellent and was extra spicy, as requested. Just the wrong dish. I'm still giving the place four stars, just not making any more special requests.

Love Changs. Hole in the wall place and Mr. Chang has a great bubbly personality. When I moved to Bartlett I found my new go to for Chinese at Changs and have gone back numerous times since to the point Mr Chang recognizes me. Place looks like it hasn't changed in the 20 or so yrs it's been here and that's ok. Only thing I truly wish they'd change at Changs is cash only. They don't accept credit/debit cards. Can be a pain in the a$$ sometimes having to swing by the bank before picking up, but unless something better comes along it's worth the extra effort. Best Chinese food in the area. Haven't tried something I haven't enjoyed.

LOVE Chang's. Been getting takeout from here for years. Food is amazing. One thing that most people have mentioned is that they do not accept credit cards. Only cash. Another thing to remember is that even if he takes your name, he likely didn't actually write it down. He knows who you are based on your order. So if someone sends you to pick up the order, know exactly what was ordered or you won't be getting your food. Sometimes if a woman answers the phone, she is good about writing down the names and what not, but if the man answers, he will not write it down. But hands down, best hole-in-the-wall place ever.

we passed this place before several times but never thought to try because it was always empty. the food here was surprisingly good. i ordered the fried beef eggroll, beef fried rice and fried chicken wings. i ordered 2 eggrolls because i had no idea it was going to be so big. the eggroll had a great flavor to it. so did the chicken wings. the beef in the fried rice was tender. everything was well seasoned even the fried rice which i usually find very bland in most chinese fast food places around here. everything was delicious and i will definitely be back.

Where to start with Chang's? I've been eating there for over 20 years, and it's always been in the same location - a little strip mall bay tucked away out of sight at the corner of Stage and Bartlett Blvd. When you walk in, there's a few tables, and a TV in the corner - this place is really based more around take-out chinese than dine-in. There's no waiters, no dishes even. If you want to eat there, you can sit down and eat out of the takeout containers. It looks like a little hole-in-the-wall takeout place. Strangely, I've found that that is where you find some of the best food. And when it's the owner cooking for you at an establishment that's been around for a couple of decades... There's a reason it's still here. When I walk in, Chang always calls out my name and waves, then brings my food up to the counter - he knows me and most of his customers on sight. I generally call ahead, and he has the food ready in less than 15 minutes no matter what off the menu you order, or how busy it is. You can't beat the service. And then there's the food. I've not found a chinese place anywhere that has better food. Period. If I won the lottery, I'd pay the man to teach me how to cook his menu. His chicken fried rice is seasoned and cooked to perfection. It's not greasy. It's not clumpy. The rice is never under-cooked. The chicken is tender and succulent. It's also irregular in shape and size. Why is that important? Chang doesn't use frozen breast tenderloins thawed out and chopped into perfect white cubes of blandness like a lot of places. He uses real cuts of meat, and that's what you get - nature's perfect imperfection. What else is there to say about Chang's House? Great food. Great service. Go try it.

Absolutely the best Chinese in Bartlett. Changs has been here for 20 years and will be here 20 more. Cash and checks only. No plastic accepted.

Strip mall restaurants are not very popular in Memphis and its adjacent neighborhoods. Generally, they are met with skepticism and reluctance. Perhaps this belief stems from the fact that many strip mall restaurants in Memphis focus on "cheaper" meals, a category mostly disdained by the suburban culture which permeates most of the city. However, as any adventurous diner can tell you, strip malls tend to offer the most unique dining experiences available to a hungry consumer and at a price that justifies the venture. Chang's House is one such establishment which embodies all that is strip mall dining. Is Chang's a bastion for fine-dining-weary gastronomical travelers, or is it just another pin in a landscape of quick eats? Don't let the atmosphere fool you. The food you are served at Chang's is of the same quality as that from a Chinese restaurant of a higher caliber. I had the sweet and sour chicken and was pleasantly surprised to find that the chicken was not at all dry. My fellow diner ordered the kung pao chicken and found that it was similarly tasty. I had the egg roll with my food which was also quite good, with telling signs that it was made in house rather than simply rewarmed from another venue. The food appeared to have been prepared or partially prepared when we ordered since the food took a longer time to arrive than if it had been simply pulled from a large batch. My typical litmus test for quality of Chinese food is the house fried rice. It is a fairly ubiquitous dish for Chinese dining with just enough variation and nuances of preparation to make it an accurate gauge for food quality. This being said the fried rice at Chang's is amazing. It had three types of meat that I could identify - chicken, pork, and shrimp. The rice was flavored with a garlic and soy base with a slightly sweet after taste possibly from the rending of the chicken or pork fat. The texture of the rice was just right, chewy but not hard. There was a greasiness to the rice that I generally find missing from most Chinese restaurants that makes it far more satisfying and flavorful. Overall, this is one of the best fried rice available in Memphis next to the Shanghai restaurant. I got one order of fried rice and was unable to finish it although I wish I could have - count this as one of the few moments I wish I were larger so that I could fill my belly with more delicious food. I brought the remainder of my fried rice back to work which in itself is not important, but the fact that 5 of my coworkers stopped by simply to comment and smell the bag that contained the fried rice is telling of its undeniable appeal. It should be noted that this is not exotic Chinese food. If you are hoping that this is Chinese-Chinese food (notice how I emphasized "Chinese") then you will be disappointed. This is Americanized Chinese food served well. Food: 5/5 As I mentioned in the intro, Chang's is a strip mall dining establishment. It is not a luxurious or even comfortable restaurant by any means. It is uncomfortably small, with very close-quartered seating for about 12. My first impression of the venue was that it looked very similar to the waiting room of a small medical clinic or urinalysis lab. Chang, the namesake of the restaurant, works the counter and is a friendly man. The only menu rests on the counter where you place your order. No table service here. The small television on the garbage bin plays ethnic programming, but I am sure that they would not mind if you were to change the channel. There are a few ethnic paintings and other décor on the walls, but overall it is a very sterile environment. Speaking of which, the dining area is very clean. There was no foul/harsh odors from cleaning solution or any eyesores to speak of. Behind the counter, the kitchen looks like a warehouse, albeit clean. Atmosphere: 3/5 There really is no service to speak of. You pickup your food from the counter; you order from the counter, and you bus your own garbage. That being said the employees are friendly and the counter service is quick and courteous. One note, you should speak clearly because it seems English is not the primary language of the employees. My order was messed up due to an egg roll being added to the order when I did not request it... though maybe I was the 100th customer... Service: N/A Chang's is an excellent value. The amount of food per order is substantial. Each lunch dish is served with a fried wonton, fried rice, and the entrée. It is a satisfying amount of food. All food is served in to-go boxes regardless, making take-out a breeze. Like all great hole-in-the wall restaurants, Chang's is a cash only business. Be sure to bring cash; otherwise, you'll be leaving empty-handed. Value: 5/5 Chang's is an excellent place to grab a quick delicious bite to eat. It may not be five star dining, but it hits all the right marks to earn it's spot as a great location for a meal.

Visiting friends and family in Memphis and was introduced to Chang's House. Their food is so fresh and they sure pack a lot in those to go boxes. My definite go to place for Chinese take-out from now on when I visit. I am in love with their combination lo-mien. Their egg rolls are so much better than a lot Chinese restaurant and trust me I went to many. It is not greasy like other places, but crunchy and absolutely divine.

Best take out in Bartlett! Their fried rice is wonderful and the eggrolls are handmade (not frozen). I have yet to find any better. The owner also grows his own bean sprouts. Wonton soup is one of my favorites as well as the kung pao shrimp. If you like the authentic spicy mustard, he keeps a stash ready to go for a few extra cents. A must try place!!!

The fried rice had a burnt tast to it and the general Tao chicken I got was tough and chewy. And its 2014 and they don't take cash. Bartlett, TN doesn't have any good Chinese food that I've found so far. All the good stuff is in Memphis ( midtown and university of memphis area)

Above average but overpriced Chinese takeout. It is one of the better Chinese restaurants I've been to in Memphis, but I feel that there are better options for the price. I particularly loved the egg drop soup, and the fried rice is really quite good. The entrees were good but not quite as memorable. However, with so many other options I'm not sure I will go back.

This place has great reviews and I just have not experienced the same with the food here. The owners are great and very friendly but the food for me is just okay. I have had the white and fried rices and the general tso and honey chickens. I did not really enjoy the taste of the general tso sauce and the chicken seemed like it was cooked too long. The honey chicken flavor is good, but it seemed like the sauce might have been scorched because of a slight bitter/burnt taste. I really wanted to love this place, but there is nothing about the food that makes me want to go back.

Never disappointed! This little place has been there for years. Most of their business is take out, but they do have tables if you want to eat there. My sons drive from Downtown, Midtown, and East Memphis to get Chinese food from Changs. Their spring rolls and their house fried rice are my favorites, but pretty much everything is good.

Always nice and friendly. I need to start coming by more often. Love the Curry Chicken. Fried rice is the best in town. Old school cash only which is cool and part of the appeal of this place for me.

I agree with the other reviews, best takeout in Memphis! Fried rice is fantastic. Cash only, but worth it.

My family has been eating here for many years! We live in Arkansas and drive across the bridge to Memphis for the delicious Chinese food! All house-made fried rice, egg rolls, egg foo yung and cream cheese wontons are my favorites. Mr. Chang is usually at the front desk or cooking in the kitchen. This restaurant is nothing fancy, but just right for takeout. The food speaks for itself. They always remember us, even when we call in and order. Check this place out, you won't regret it!!!

Great food. Very generous portions. Knocked off one star because they are cash only. I do not carry much cash. Would stop in a lot more often if they took VISA.

This is my favorite Chinese food place in the Memphis area. I've eaten here with my family for many years. When I was in college, a buddy of mine and I went on a mini-quest to find a place in the area with better fried rice than Chang's. After eating at dozens of Chinese places, guess what... Such a place does not exist! I recommend storing their number in your phone, picking up a menu, and calling your order in. There's limited seating, so we typically do take-out. I think they still don't take credit cards, so bring cash. For a hungry family of 4, get the large chicken fried rice, 4 spring rolls, and an entree dish of your choice (beef and veggies, Szechuan chicken, or Kung Pao beef/chicken are great).

Chang's house is a hidden gym buried in a sea of fast food and chain restaurants. I happen to find this place on Yelp and decided to try it since I was new to the Bartlett area. The quality of the food is amazing. Especially compared to the competition! Do not hesitate going here. They have 4 and 5 star reviews for a reason. CASH ONLY so hit up the ATM on the way.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
