    Wow! My friend and I ate here last week and it was hands down some of the best Italian food we have both had in awhile. We had crab cakes as the appetizer then she had the halibut and I had the shrimp with wine sauce. I will definitely be coming back! The waitress was very honest, and I love that. It is a bit pricey but worth it if you are looking for a nice atmosphere that is romantic, quiet, and of course has wonderful food!

    We got in for an early lunch. The server was friendly, and the food was great. Their red pasta sauce is really flavorful. We had it on the lasagna. I also tried a spicy tri colored pasta dish, which was flavorful without being so spicy the the flavor is ruined. I'm glad we found this place.

    I came here 15 months ago with my family and the food was amazing.... Great service too. Today.... Not so great. I ordered a calzone and the dough wasn't cooked through and was brought out barely above room temperature. My dining partner ordered the tortellini dish called the Tuscan. That dish was very salty and the pasta wasn't fresh (it was the constancy of store bought refrigerated pasta. For the price you should expect freshly made. This place is off our list of places to go

    Yeah, I'm just as surprised as anyone else that there is an excellent Italian restaurant here. My dining companions that brought us here have tried basically everything on the menu and have not had a bad meal. I tried the pasta with vodka sauce and it was comparable to anything I've had in NY. Everyone was happy with their meals. The bread that came with the meal was fresh and came with creamy butter. The restaurant is one big open space and the acoustics in the room can cause the room to be pretty loud. The place was packed for a Wednesday night. Everyone was dressed pretty casually. Overall, a great low key place for an amazing Italian meal. Excellent wine selection as well.

    Super slow service, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt as they said a big group had come through. We did have a wait for a table when we arrived and by the time we were halfway through our meal, there was almost nobody left in the place. The sausage and pepper appetizer was good, but nothing too fancy. It was a bit on the spicy side. The bread was good, but a bit dry. No butter came with it and you had oil and vinegar on the table you could mix yourself, but no real seasonings to put in it. That was a bit lackluster. The husband had the chicken Gorgonzola and loved it. I enjoyed the few bites I managed to sneak off his plate. I had the buffalo ravioli and it was delicious. The pasta tasted fresh and the meat was flavorful. Both dishes had lots of garlic chunks. Overall, it was a surprising find in South Dakota and a place I'd give a try again if I was in the area, just not if I was in a rush.

    By South Dakota standards this restaurant is above average. The service was pretty good. They were out of two dishes so I had the salmon with potato strings, greens, candied walnuts. My son had a pizza. The salmon was pretty good and the pizza was okay too. This place is pricey. It's ok, but I wish I had eaten elsewhere.

    While on a cross-country roadtrip, my wife and I stopped for the night in Spearfish. With the help of Yelp, we decided to try out Roma's for dinner. We were very surprised at what we found, given the optics of the town. It was a cute restaurant that looked modern, clean, and comfortable. Though we went on a Wednesday night, it was quite busy inside when we arrived. Even still, we were able to get a table for two (booth) without any wait. Our waiter, Randy, was prompt and always attentive. While we waited for our food, we had a good sized loaf of bread and oil & vinegar that was on the table. The bread was good, as was the selection of vinegar. As for dinner, I had a caesar salad to start and an order of chicken parmesan. Both were well done and pleasant to eat. I ordered a glass of wine, but our waiter forgot to bring it out. After our food had arrived, I asked Randy about it and he admitted he had forgotten. As a result, he brought it out right away and refused to charge me for it. Good atmosphere, awesome service, nice food, and all for a decent price. I'd definitely come back again and recommend to anyone.

    My husband & I were driving across the country and stopped in Spearfish after a long day on the road. We found Roma's on Yelp and decided to go give it a try. It was a Wednesday night and it was surprisingly busy around 7:30pm. Our waiter was Randy who was knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. He was great at updating us on the status of our meals and checking on us. My husband ordered the Chicken Parmesan and I ordered the shrimp scampi. My husband & I both commented that once we were seated and inside; we did not feel like we were in Spearfish, SD. There were many large groups and you could tell this was a popular hangout. Good job and great server. Would come back again.

    The night started off like this. I was sitting at home looking at the menu online. In around 2 hours, I was supposed to meet friends at Roma's for dinner. The menu? Not much for vegan selections. I decide to call and ask. Right away the hostess handed the phone to the cook so I could ask if it would be okay to have a dish prepared for me that fit my dietary needs. The cook was great! He even took the time to look at the pasta ingredients to ensure there were no eggs. Flash forward to dinner. Service was FANTASTIC! I don't remember the server's name but he was awesome. Very prompt, polite and professional. Dinner tasted great from the salad to the wine. The cook made me roasted vegetables with pasta/marinara. It was great! I eat at Roma's once a year or so when I'm in Spearfish and my experience has always been positive. Con: The expense, but I believe the environment and service very well pays for itself in that sense.

    The food is almost entirely Italian. For the food I give it four stars. I've never had a bad meal here, although the marinara sauce was runny like tomato soup one time. I give two stars for the service because sometimes it's great, sometimes it's bad. The dinning area is a little too open; kind of like eating in a gymnasium.

    Absolutely delicious. Great service by beautiful waitress Shelly. Food was fresh and this has become one of our favorite restaurants. I highly recommend.

    Excellent food and atmosphere. The white truffle chicken pasta dish is one of those meals you dream about for weeks after you eat it. I've been there multiple times as my family loves to go there for special occasions (like Thursdays, ha!), and it is always a fun experience.

    On our last night in Spearfish we decided to treat ourselves to something better than franchise or fast food fare. Roma's did not disappoint. We started with small Caesar salads. The romaine was crisp and fresh and was dressed very lightly with a tasty house made dressing. I had the pasta Carbonara. It was very rich and flavorful. As good as any I've ever had anywhere, including in Italy. My wife had the Roma Lasagna. Lots of meat and cheese - perfectly baked. The marinara was bit sweet for our taste, but I'm certainly not going to dock them stars for that. If I were going to be critical it would be the bread. More like an over sized dinner roll than good crusty Italian bread. The portions were huge and we were barely able to get through half of them. We were too full for desert. The service was excellent. It wasn't busy so we were seated immediately. Our waiter was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I thought the prices were just a bit high, which would generally get them a 4 star rating. But I gave them the 5th star to help offset the 1 and 2 star contrarians who must have eaten at a different place than I did.

    Can not comment on the food, but will say the service is horrible!!! We sat and waited for the server, she finally shows up takes our drink order at which time we were ready to order our meal. She went to get our drinks and returned with them.,she said she would be right back to take our food order. Well, her right back didn't come, ( she was all around us)but could not or would not find the time to take our order and so we finally left. Truly sad situation, we were starving, the restaurant wasn't overly busy and we still couldn't get waited on...

    I recently visited Roma's while visiting my folks. I have to say that I don't love the new location. Like T. Michael B. said in his review, the feel is very industrial and the strip mall location is depressing compared to the quaint spot before. I felt the interior to be cold and unwelcoming. The old spot would have been a go-to for a date or other intimate evening where the new spot felt stark and not at all cozy. Maybe some rugs or plants or something would help but I was not feeling the new digs AT ALL! A few more cons. My folks and I all complained of a serious lack of flavor in our dishes. This was totally disappointing considering our mutual love for the food at Roma's. I have always loved the rich and complex flavors of the pasta dishes and this time all three of our plates fell short. I had the Gorgonzola Chicken Pasta (my favorite) and couldn't detect any difference in flavors between any of the ingredients. In fact, there really wasn't any flavor. Bah! The servers offer freshly grated cheese for your dish which is lovely except they grate it with their bare hands while holding the grater with a dishtowel. HUH? Wouldn't you hold the cheese with the towel and the grater with your bare (dirty) hands? If I recall correctly this used to be the standard in my initial visits. Ew. Now on to the pros. The staff is still incredibly kind and knowledgeable, professional and courteous. The view from the back patio is very nice. The menu still very progressive and inventive considering Roma's is located in the middle of nowhere USA. The wine list is beautiful. The restaurant is probably still the best in the area, considering. I still give Roma's four stars because I think it has so much to offer Spearfish and the Black Hills in general when it comes to dining. Maybe they need to get over some growing pains? Step it up Roma's!

    Roma's is certainly a local favorite in Spearfish, but this is no doubt because of the paucity of non-steakhouse restaurant choices available in the area. The new location is certainly not as noisy as the previous downtown location, but it also lacks some the charm. Unfortunately, the new locations still features average food, high prices and sub-par service. It would have taken a magnifying glass to identify the pheasant in the pheasant ravioli and the rest of the menu doesn't fare much better, in my opinion. Maybe I'm jaded, but I don't think Roma's would enjoy its reputation in a town with a couple other Italian restaurants. While the staff is friendly, be prepared to wait for your server to take your order (or even bring you water) and I routinely experience 30 minute waits for my check to arrive after I've asked for it. I wish I could say that these were isolated incidents, but sadly they are the norm. I want to like this place, because, while I like Shoot the Bull and the Chophouse (two other, better local restaurants), I would love to have a non-meat and potatoes choice for dinner. Unfortunately, Roma's fall short.

    Even in light of all the rave reviews I was still skeptical. But I am now a believer. OMG the marinara sauce on the mountain of lasagna was amazing!!

    Food was good, but hostess/manager is rude. We had a larger party (11) and it took 1.5 hours to get our food. Really didn't feel like hostess cared if we ate there or not. On the other hand, wait staff was good.

    I took back a star since the "Old Review" below. It's now open in its new location by Kmart and much of the "noise" problem I mentioned before has been solved, though it lost some of its chic appeal with the move to its industrial location. But, hey, you can't have everything, so it's kind of a push in the building department. It still may be the best restaurant in Spearfish as I said before, and it's certainly the best Italian restaurant, lacking any competition whatsoever. But, eh..., call me crazy and a franchise barbarian...I'd rather go to Olive Garden where you can always count on what you're getting (never been disappointed there). Yeah, I know that sounds gauche, but that's me. It was my wife's birthday, or thereabouts, and a sister and niece, with her baby, were going to come along to help celebrate, so we decided to go to the new location for the first time. My wife called for a reservation (I know, it should have been my job) and specifically asked for a table well out of any traffic zones since the baby was going to be with us and we wanted a quiet conversation setting. The guy said it would be no problem (or at least, not his problem).The niece and baby got there first, and they seated her at the worst table possible--the table closest to the door to the kitchen where everything was going out and coming in. (Innocent mix-up? Maybe.) My wife wanted another table but felt that by then it was too late since the niece and baby were settled in, we'd drunk the water, etc. (a decision we regretted, maybe costing a star). They served some so-called "French" bread for table starters that was dry and unappetizing even after dipping it in olive oil or vinagrette (nothing worked). And you can understand we were unhappy campers by then. The rest of the food and service (a tad slow) was fine; however, I still prefer Olive Garden's food and service (so shoot me). Just disappointed that this higher-price point restaurant didn't maintain high standards all the way through, you know? But certainly not writing it off. Little more wary is all. Might be a while. Hope to add stars in the future, knowing that many, many locals and visitors are very big fans. Old Review: Everything's great at this, perhaps, the best restaurant in town, except it tends to be a little noisy with the high ceilings and the open floor plan that includes an exposed kitchen. It has the look of a big-city restaurant, but it's tough to have an easy conversation without raising your voice. Maybe that minor irritation will be fixed when this fine Italian restaurant moves to its new location this year. (Four stars for me is great. I reserve five stars for "This is hard to believe!")

    By far the worst italian restaurant I've ever been to. For starters, their bread was a large dinner roll that fell apart when I tried to cut it. The serving sizes were pathetically small having barely any pasta but drowning in too much sauce. My son and daughter both ordered pasta with alfredo sauce but since my son has a bigger appetite, we ordered him the adult portion but when we got our meals they were essentially the same size just in a larger plate. His cost $14 while the child portion was $7. I do not know how this place got such high reviews. My pasta had no depth. It was basically a few strands of pasta with tomato sauce thrown on top. Prego and hunts both make better pasta sauce

    Bottom line- great food and highly recommended. Traveling through Spearfish on a family vacation, we happned upon Roma. It looked very cute and a great alternative to the typical steak, potatoes, and beer cusine we've had practically our entire trip! The food was amazing- I had the Pheasant Ravioli with roasted garlic and sun dried tomato creme sauce. My taste buds exploded with the great mix of flavors. The service was very friendly and all local- we were treated well and not forgotten about, as is the case with some local eateries and out-of-towners.

    this is as good as it gets esp. for western south dakota!!! I never miss a chance to dine at roma's. i like the new building better than the old. it actually has heating and air conditioning where the old location was questionable at best. I love the angry shrimp thingy... i have never had a bad experience at ROMA'S
