The Gem disappointed on many levels or perhaps my expectations were too high. The decor and atmosphere was on par with Perkins and was more reminiscent of a New Jersey parkway diner than a well- recommended steakhouse. The steak was ok but no great shakes. Veggies were frozen and the bread was institutional food service quality garlic toast. If you want a good steak go to Texas Roadhouse in Rapid or The Deadwood Grill. The Gem was no gem, at best a rhinestone.

The wait staff was very friendly. We had been traveling all day and were very hungry when we arrived at the Gem. We had a hard time deciding on which restaurant to eat at in Deadwood, because none of them really stood out to us, but eventually decided to eat here. When we arrived upstairs, we saw a lot of empty tables so we thought we would be seated right away. We were surprised when we found out that we would have to wait. The host took our name and told us we could wait in the bar or downstairs. We were not given an estimated wait time. After waiting for over twenty minutes, we checked on our status and found out we were next. The food was okay. We ordered the steak dinner for two. We asked for the steak to be medium well. When the steak arrived it was very bloody, definitely rare to medium rare. Service was slow and we were hungry, so we decided to go ahead and eat the steak even though it wasn't cooked the way we wanted it.

Great place. Excellent food, healthy portions, great service, reasonably priced. Visited 7/24/14 about 8:30pm, the place was busy but we were seated immediately. Waiter very attentative and made good recommendations on food & local beer. We had the porterhouse and the prime rib & sides. Unfortunately they did not have their smoked prime rib that night which they bill as a house specialty. But still the regular prime rib was great. Would go again.

I was craving a good buffalo burger and this place delivered! Not only was the burger not over cooked (as bison sometimes tends to be) but the applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese made it perfect. Our server was helpful and great with our kids. Fun fact: The atmosphere was cool as the upstairs where the restaurant is located was once a brothel. But now it's just a nice relaxing place to grab a bite at a decent price.

I'm rating The Gem based on the food standards in Deadwood, which are pretty low. By that scale, it's good -- meaning it's the best I've yet found in town, but that I'd never eat here if it were in a town with a serious food scene. The atmosphere was quiet despite being busy, which I very much enjoyed. The service was friendly if not exceptionally professional for a place that tries to present itself as upscale. I had a steak which was moderately tender and was cooked as requested. The meat of course was flavorless due to it being standard feedlot fare but it was seasoned well enough. (Note: I'm used to eating wild game and grass fed beef so the factory farmed meats never cut it for me.) The mashed potatoes with gravy were acceptable, as were the green beans. The bananas foster cheesecake was good, the best part of the meal.

Hi visited hoping to have the prime rib, but unfortuantely it's unavailable during the off-season. However, the service was fantastic. John was my server and he was very knowledgable about not only the menu, but South Dakota and it's attractions, geography, and anything else I asked. He was also very warm and accommodating. Concerning the food, I ended up getting a steak. The French Onion soup was 10 out of 10. The garlic mashed potatoes and bread were also good. The vegetable side was marginal and the steak was good. I'm not a huge steak guy and if I went back (which I would) I would probably order something else, but as far as steak goes it was decent.

This place was pretty cool to stop in, if nothing other than the history of it. Had breakfast here and had window seat overlooking Main Street. Kind of cool to think that Al himself could have been standing there at one point in time. The breakfast was pretty good. I had farnum's french toast and hubby had Mr. woo's breakfast. Both were very good and prices very reasonable. Service was nice as well. Coffee was not very good, though.

Our waitress was friendly and responsive. The food was very good. Come here for lunch and the prices are good. They have lots of pictures of deadwood from its past. We liked it here.

Had a meal here last night, we both ordered the 12oz Ribeye. Seasoning was good, garlic mash was nice, steak cooked to medium was perfect. Texas toast was not nice and the vegetables were corn kernels nothing special. Was disappointed with the salad was basically an iceberg lettuce on a plate. Reasonably priced in downtown Deadwood though.

Average in all things- food, prices, service. We had to wait to be seated, even thought there were open tables, there were not enough servers. As a fan of the HBO Series, I thought the menu was pretty clever. My husband picked this place for his birthday dinner and he thought is was really great, though I thought it could be better. Prices for steak averaged $13-20 and the steak was fine but it depended on the cut you paid for. The salad was unimpressive and I felt the same about the service. My steak could have been more tender and it had a lot of fat on it but I did buy a cheaper cut. The whole place needed a throughout cleaning as well. The trip to the bathroom was a highlight- they have some great photographs with historic explanations on them- a must see if you are a fan of the HBO series. The casino wasn't that great, we had better luck and service at the Celebrity.

The service was poor and that was the best part of the meal. They were short staffed and couldn't keep up. I had the shrimp. I ate 2 out of the 6. They tasted like they were fried in last weeks oil. The garlic mashed potatoes definitely were not fresh. For the type of dining establishment that they are trying to be they missed the mark completely. I only gave them 1 star because I had to.

Our group of 20 had no complaints here. The Merrick's ribeye was really really good, a little overcooked for medium rare though. Tomato bisque is really thick and flavorful. Prime rib was just ok. Chicken fried steak is HUGE, great gravy, and really crispy. Only $6.95 and no one was able to finish a whole one. Servers are great here.

Absolutely excellent meal at a very reasonable price. Porterhouse steak was cooked to perfection and the garlic crusted sirloin was terrific. The Gem restaurant is a little hard to find but once you do you will really enjoy it. I rate this hidden gem a 4.

Group of 14 - nobody was disappointed. Made reservations 2 days in advance. Told them that most of us would be ordering prime rib. They thanked us for letting them know, and said they would cook an extra one for us. Sweet!!! We ordered prime rib, a couple of ribeyes, and BBQ ribs. Exceptional!!! Sides were good, bloody Mary's were good. Waitress was great! Atmosphere was great as well. Very, very pleased!

I started off with a salad, but it was really just a bunch of iceberg lettuce on a plate. For the main course I ordered a rare ribeye steak with mashed garlic potatoes, Texas toast and vegetables. The steak was a bit overcooked, but had good seasoning. The mashed potatoes were good but very stiff and a bit cold. The toast and vegetables were nothing to write about. The service was ok. Food: 2/5 Service: 2/5

Of all the places I figured I would be able to find a decent steak in the Black Hills, I had Deadwood pegged as one. I was disappointed to say the least with the ribeye and baked potato I ordered after an evening of sightseeing in Deadwood, Lead, and the surrounding Hills. The ribeye was the toughest ribeye I've ever had, and was quite a bit more done than the medium rare I ordered. I've cooked medium well to well ribeyes that were light years more tender. The baked potato was only about half consumable, as the outer half inch of it below the skin was grey for some reason! The service was mediocre - the staff was not malicious, just uninterested. It was sustenance, and it did that job, so rather than start something, I paid my check and went on my way. The lovely drive south through the hills on US 385 soon made the meal just a memory in an otherwise fun day.

There is too much in one plate, especially for girls. The buffalo menus are authentic.

Large Steakhouse upstairs from the Mineral Palace Casino. We had good service here. Some of the tables overlook Deadwood's historic Main Street. Pretty decent steaks--and here's a great tip: If you pay the $3 charge to split one of the steak dinners, both diners get salad/soup, their choice of potato, vegetable of the day, and bread. This is a great deal; I did this with my son and neither of our portions were skimped upon. I had to slice the steak in half but otherwise we both got two huge plates heaped with the accompaniments.
