It only took me about a week or two to head down to Westerly for dim sum once I learned that there was a restaurant that made it. I was happy to hear that they had nai wong bao on the menu - which was noticeably absent from my other new dim sum spot in West Warwick. I had intended to try the Chinese bakery in Westerly, primarily to see if they made nai wong bao - but since it was on the menu at Golden Chopstix, I figured I'd save the bakery stop for another Westerly visit. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, but he had absolutely no knowledge of the dim sum dishes, which was very frustrating. We ordered a pretty wide assortment of dim sum, most of which was pretty good. We also had the salted crispy squid appetizer which was quite tasty. We almost missed the squid as our waiter didn't know they made that dish....but luckily - I found it in the appetizer section of the menu. I knew I had seen it on their online menu. We had the shrimp rice noodles which were okay - but not what I wanted. Our waiter informed us that it was a misprint on the menu - which would have been nice of him to mention when we ordered it, but okay - he did say he knew nothing about the dim sum. The sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf was tasty and served in very small portions. The size was actually perfect as that dish is often large and a bit much when you're trying to have a little bit of many things. The stuffed peppers were different than any other rendition of that dish I've had before. They used hot peppers and stuffed them with ground beef - which was the deliciously different surprise. The taro dumplings and siu mai were both tasty. The cilantro pork dumpling was super flavorful and was probably my favorite dim sum for the day. We doubled down on desserts since the bakery was out, and ordered the red bean paste bun and nai wong bao. The red bean bun has nice flavor but was very different from what I was used to getting in Little Tokyo LA. It was similar in appearance to a scallion pancake only it was stuffed with red bean paste. I was expecting the small, golden pillow-like disc stuffed with paste. The nai wong bao was steamed and I'm pretty sure was previously frozen and store bought- sub par and also very disappointing. All in all Golden Chopstix was pretty good, and I would go there again if I were in town, but if I'm making a special trip for dim sum - I would go up to West Warwick. If I do happen to make it back - I hope our waiter will have acquired some more knowledge about the menu - or would be willing to hand the table off to someone who is familiar with the dishes - like I asked for immediately upon being informed that he knew nothing about what we were there for. It was absolutely refreshing to find another Chinese restaurant in RI with more authentic - less Americanized offerings.

Good dim sum in the Westerly area. Dim sum is ordered from a menu rather than ordering off the cart. Been here many times over the years. It's conveniently located near an Asian grocery store in the same complex.

This place may look like a dive but dont be fooled! Huge portions, friendly staff, and best of all really cheap amazingly delicious food! This is my new favorite chinese restaurant! Will be back I had the dim son on recommendation of another yelp goer. It was the grief shrimp dim son. Excellent and the sauce wad amazing with it. For my main I had boneless pork ribs. The pork wad extremely tender and the rice was also very good. Egg roll wasent the best but all-in-all I had a excellent meal and I will def be going back

After reading the reviews, we decided to try Golden Chopsticks. There were four of us, all with slightly different tastes. The interior of the restaurant is clean and neat and we were seated promptly. We ordered appetizers and soup and all was tasty. My wife ordered chicken with ginger and scallions and asked if she could have some brocolli with it The waitress took the time to understand that we didn't want to change the dish, just add some steamed brocolli. She then explained that she'd have to charge $2 additional and asked how my wife wanted the brocolli cooked. Nicely handled! My wife's dish was served surrounded by enough brocolli, nicely steamed, that we all partook. Everyone else's meal was fresh and tasty. A very pleasant meal with welcoming service.

We drove back from RI beach and was looking for a Chinese restaurant. This was it, and we hit the jackpot on the food. The service staff was very patient answering our question. We wanted authentic Chinese food, and she brought us another menu. Much better. Very authentic. We started our meal with some din sum, fried pork dumping, the best I've ever had, and steed dried shrimp rice cake, excellent. Vegetable soup was clean and tasty. Great sauces, too. Steamed sea bass was heavenly; was not stink like other restaurants prepare it. Sautéed cuttlefish was very start if was a little tough side. If you crave the authentic Chinese food, this place is it. Of course, the other menu has the usual American Chinese dishes. We will be back here, again, soon.

What I liked about this place was the wide selection they had available on their menu (pretty large menu). They also happen to serve dim sum at all hours of the day. Unfortunately we must have gone at a pretty bad time (right after late lunch and before dinner time) so a lot of what we wanted from the dim sum menu were either unavailable or sold out for the day. The rice rolls for examples the waitress informed us that they stop selling at 4pm, so make sure you get in there before then if you wanted some! The food came out relatively quick, but a little disappointed with the quality. The shrimp dumplings had a soggy skin and they weren't served with the sweet soy sauce that typically accompanies them at all other dim sum joints. The popular chicken feet dish had a delicious sauce but the meat was way overcooked, with the skin practically falling off the bones. But the har gao was delicious and the beef chow fun was also very well done. The chow fun wasn't too salty nor oily with the wide noodles soaked with just the right amount of sauce. We also got a spicy cuttlefish dish loaded with veggies and cooked in a pretty traditional chili sauce. The food is just ok, but service was good, the waitress was very nice, providing alternatives to the dishes they either ran out or didn't serve at that hour which was why they lost a couple of stars there.

The food here is good but it is not a great first impression when the order is wrong, and then you call and they can't understand enough English to fix the problem. That is not acceptable. If you are charging for it you need to know how to communicate with people enough to get it right. The number 18 combo was good. The beef lo mein was just ok. I really wanted a good custard bun but was instead given red bean paste buns, not at all the same thing. If I order from here again, I will either eat in or order at the counter so I can show them what I am ordering, and then I will double check it before I leave. I did stop in another time for takeout. Good beef with mixed vegetable and custard buns. I do like that you can get dim sum anytime here. So far this place has the best combinations that I have found. It is hard to find a place that has good entrée, rice, and egg roll.

We stopped in here due to Yelp reviews and my brother had mentioned a place and this turned out to the one. We were there for the Dim Sum. We have been here twice on the way to the beaches in the area now. The food is very good. The shrimp/beef/ cilantro chow fun (rice noodle) were some of the best I have had. The noodle is freshly made and very light. The pork noodle I was expecting char sui (roast pork) in it, but was seasoned ground pork like the beef noodle. I thought the lo main gai was good not great, same on the sui mai. The lo bak goh was very good as was the har gau. The wife ( from Guangzhou) liked the maa tai gow. No BBQ pork bun on weekdays it seems. We also got the Beef chow foon. We will stop here on any future trips to the area, that is for sure.

Some of the best Chinese food in the northeast. Very authentic, they have chow fun (flat rice noodles), the best part they have dimsum all the time. Take it from a Chinese guy from SF Bay area. It's authenic and the variety is large. Foodies give the dimsum a try.

Best crispy chicken in town. Don't forget to order one day ahead since they are going to marinated over 24 hours. It's so juice on the inside and well seasoned. Don't forget to order their lobster. Since the lobster in Rhone island is all wild catch. Yes, you don't need to go to Maine to get that lobster. So the lobster is a Must try item. The meat is firmed and sweet, even on the claws. I usually don't like the texture of the claws( lobster tail is only part I eat )

We expected better. This is what gets 4 stars in Rhode Island? I ordered shrimp in garlic sauce which had a hot pepper next to it on the menu and asked for it "extra spicy." The sauce tasted more like duck sauce than garlic and it wasn't hot AT ALL. The shrimp were tasteless and there was too much celery! My husband ordered spicy chicken in a sauce and at least his was faintly spicy. The fried rice wasn't bad, but the egg rolls were still slightly frozen inside. 4 stars??? And someone said "authentic" Chinese food? Not what we were served! We're looking for great Chinese food - like Oceanview in Narragansett. They're trying to close up shop so we need a replacement and this was not it!!!

I am Chinese and I am selective in choosing chinese food. I felt very disappointed since I moved to CT for there is no good food in CT, until I found Golden Chopsticks. It is no doubt the best chinese restaurant in CT and RI! Of course no chinese restaurant in US is as good as a local one in mainland China. But Golden is still the best choice if you dont want to fly to China! The dim sun is as good as those in Hala Moon in Boston and the food is good too. I would recommend you try their bubble tea. Those are awsome! Anyway you can't be disappointed trying the food there. Well one of the waitress is a bit too slow, but that does not change my impression of the restaurant.

We went here last Friday night after reading reviews on Yelp. I am not a fan of American Chinese food but this is not that at all. We nibbled on the Dim Sum and then had a fabulous meal with plenty to take home. Server was very helpful in decision making for the newbies. Definitely recommend and will return.

I go here for the dim sum. It's not like Boston or New York City where they have the dim sum pushed around on carts, piping steaming hot. I mean there's not enough business or demand for the dim sum push carts. But I do know that they make most of the food here fresh to order. I have ordered the (dried) shrimp filled broad rice noodles from the Asian market next door and they make it here at Golden Chopsticks. I always thought the rice noodles were premade/store bought until one day I waited for my order instead of coming later in the day and boy was I shocked to get nice warm rolled rice noodles. I go to Boston every once in a while for dim sum and I was born in New York City where I ate dim sum weekly. I can tell you the quality is really good. This place also has my favorite ever Dragon's Talons (fung jow). That's an exotic dish so newbs be forewarned. A few great dim sum dishes to try are: Broad rice noodles with shrimp or pork (Cheung fun) Savory fried dumpling (ham Sui gohk). Deep fried chewy dumpling filled with a savory blend of meats and veggies. Egg custard buns. (Nai Wong bao). Creamy custard in a pillowy soft bun. ** all pronunciations are Cantonese. Another great dish that I order every time I go to dim sum is beef chow mei fun (gawn chao gnau hauh). It's flat rice noodles stir fried with beef and scallions and bean sprouts. This dish comes out of the kitchen almost instantly so it's almost like an appetizer for our dim sum. It yields enough for about 5 one cup servings. And it's about $10. It's not a dim sum dish but our family orders it every time.

Perfect combination of classy and simple. The food taste great, you won't be disappointed. Everything is reasonably priced and big portions

People must be yelping after pounding a bunch of MaiTais...there is no way this is 4 stars. The pineapple fried rice is good, but the menu is the same (and the food) as every other mediocre Chinese place. Atmosphere is almost non-existent and the service is good, but there is nothing special about any of it. Not being a dick, but seriously...it's average.

This place is simply one of the best Asian restaurants I have been to in Rhode Island. Their dim sum is excellent, and has quite a variety to choose from. The duck and taro was quite a good dish as well. They also serve bubble tea which is another positive in my book. I would say the service is the best I have seen for any Asian restaurant in the area, as they are always friendly and very pleasant to deal with.

Being Asian, I know real Chinese food when I taste it - sad to say, most of the items in their menu are like the glob of food Americans think is Chinese food. Have not found an authentic Chinese restaurant yet in Westerly.

Dim sum was absolutely terrible. I obvious did not expect NY/CA quality dim sum, but i wasn't expecting microwaved rubbery dumplings either. there was not one item from the dimsum menu that was decent.

  • A Local's Review For U.

Went back to further explore the Dim Sum Menu. Here are some impressions: Fried Crispy Shrimp Roll: Shrimp ground to a purée, seasoned and wrapped in a delicate Filo like dough and then deep fried. Nice dish, the shrimp quite al dente made this way. Served with a plain mayonnaise which I would have like to seen tweaked up a bit but other than that, an enjoyable snack. Pan Fried Leek and Shrimp Cake. Tasty bits of shrimp and chopped leeks in a round dumpling pan fried. Very tasty variation on dumplings and served with a nice dipping sauce. Steamed Red Bean Paste Bun: I have always passed on these and now regret having done so. The combination of the thick, sweet and almost meaty red bean paste and the soft pillowy bun was the surprise of the evening. Could easily see having these in the morning or as a afternoon snack with tea. Steamed Cilantro Pork Dumpling: Dumplings with a nice flavor of cilantro for those of us who love that herb. It is also interesting to note that they make their dumplings with rice dough, not the usual wheat flour. This explains why several reviewers complained of the dumplings and wontons being 'mushy' or 'gelatinous'. I guess those folks are unfamiliar with the more translucent rice variety of dumplings. Anyway, these were very good. Steamed Spare Ribs: These are far away from what we might think of as spare ribs in this country and I can say with some assurity that the vast majority of folks would return these in disgust. These are fatty, steamed rib bits with lots of little bones and no sauce other than the natural juices of the meat topped with a few slices of chilis and fermented beans. Unctuous, gelatinous, and pale, they certainly won't appeal to to the mainstream. On the other hand if you are one of those gourmet types who love exotic bits of the animal, go for it. I enjoyed them, but maybe just this once. We also had the stir fried snow pea tips which are always excellent if they have them and quite a healthy addition to any Chinese meal as well as the vegetables with egg noodles dish off the Chinese Menu. All in all a very exotic meal for this part of the world and greatly appreciated by those of us tired of the same old sweet gingery sauce covering everything at most Chinese places. Once again, highly reccomened for the Chinese Menu and the Dim Sum.

Ordered takeout. Hands down, worst Chinese food ever. I had General Tso's Chicken and steamed dumplings. Dumplings had very gristly sausage in it. Chicken was very, very poor quality- stringy and mostly crunchy overcooked. My egg roll was burned, black actually. Fried rice was greasy, overcooked. My GF's food was bland and tasteless. Not a good experience.

It is the first Dim Sum place I went to after moving to CT from NYC and and have been going here now for over 14 years, Great Dim Sum and many traditional authentic Chinese dishes are as good as NYC. Two of my favorites is there Barbecue Duck and Beef Chow Fun. It's a 30 minutes drive but always worth the trip.

We came here to try their dim sum. We had: Shuimai (shrimp and pork dumpling): tastes very good and they actually put the whole piece of shrimp on the top on the dumpling. One order has 4 dumplings. Pork bun: Very good. My husband thought that the pastry part was a little thicker than what he is used to, but that is actually my favorite part of any steamed bun. The pork itself has the really yummy sweet sauce. One order has 3 buns. House style Fried Tofu: It is 3 pieces of crispy fried tofu with pork on top and sitting in a sauce. My husband really enjoyed that dish. Fried Taro dumpling with shrimp and pork: Sooooo crispy! The filling is very traditional. We also ordered pork and preserved egg congee: We really liked that the egg and pork were not too salty and it has big pieces of pork. This bowl of congee is definitely enough for two people all by itself. (We brought the leftovers home for the next day's breakfast). The restaurant was empty, but it was probably because we came at an odd time between lunch and dinner. Our sever was very friendly and helpful with answering all of our questions. She even went to the kitchen to find out all the ingredients they use for the dipping sauce because we asked her because it was so good. Overall we enjoyed the food and will probably go back again.

We were in Westerly the other day and I commandeered the family sedan to Golden Chopsticks. Since I've been reading the good things on Yelp, I felt it was a good time to check it out for myself. Don't let the brightly lit strip-mall look fool you - the food here is a huge step up from your average Chinese restaurant. I asked our waitress for the Chinese menu, and she took the time to explain dishes, make suggestions, and answer our questions. We tried some items from the dim sum menu, some from the real Chinese menu (written in Chinese with English translation) and some from the regular menu for our sons. The dim sum dishes were superb. One was a leek and shrimp dumpling that was crispy on the outside and tender and bursting with flavor inside. I'd go back just for more of those! The other dishes were all very good to excellent, and the barbarians (teens) liked their food very much. I've eaten many times in a number of places in both NY's and Boston's Chinatowns, and Golden Chopsticks would be a very solid restaurant in either. For Rhode Island, it's freakin' awesome.

Visiting the area for the first time, saw the Yelp reviews so we thought we would try it out for dinner and we were pleasantly surprised. We looked at the Chinese menus and it had everything you would find at a NY Chinatown restaurant. We had westlake beef soup, roast duck, chicken with pea shoots, steamed whole fish, and beef pan fried noodles. All excellent!

Pretty good Chinese food as far as Rhode Island goes. I'm a big fan of their huge menu, especially since they have tons of more traditional food available. The staff was very friendly, and the waitress was more than willing to explain dishes when asked. Truth be told we got a light meal here, and I thought it was very good. I'm most likely going to go back at a different date and try something like the Shark Fin Soup, which I haven't had in ages.

Ok, let's try a little Chinese here... Hen hao (very good). I know how to say food, but I don't know the proper spelling. How about this - wan fan hen hao. Dinner very good. I have eaten at Golden Chopsticks 8-9 times, never a bad meal at all. Dim sum is very good and authentic. Prices are very reasonable, good location, easy parking, friendly staff. They don't cook for American tastes here - it's authentic Chinese. Just look at the customers when you walk in.

My family loves this place. We recently discovered it- in a goofy little strip mall- & everyone enjoys it. The Dim Sum has something for everyone & the price can't be beat. We love the Scallion pancakes & the buns with sticky filling (I think that's it)- my kids love the steamed pork buns & red paste buns as well as the standard fried dumplings & crab rangoons. There are some more interesting things on the menu if you're feeling adventurous. They also have a Chinese menu & "American" menu- which is hilarious. I recommend you go for the Chinese menu & try some of those treats.

I've pretty much only eaten the dim sum at Golden Chopsticks, but it is to die for! My boyfriend and I were going almost every weekend for a while. The service is exceptional- the waitstaff is very friendly and the food comes in a timely fashion. I have eaten dim sum at many places, including several in Boston and Seattle, but Golden Chopsticks has the most delectable by far. I highly recommend the steamed pork buns, the fried dough rice rolls, and of course, the shumai, among other items. The prices are very reasonable. We usually get 8 or 9 different items and the total is never more than $35. Enjoy!

I've gone here a few times and the service and food was good. We would order bubble tea and Thai tea with no issues. Well tonight they told us we could not have bubble tea because it would take too long to make. I said seriously ? She then said yes you cannot have it. I was taken back so we just got waters. Next we wanted to order some dim sum and rice balls. There is nothing in the menu that states we are looking at a lunch menu. So we put our order in akd she says no u can't have that it's only during lunch. I said but it's in the menu she said no u can't have it . Strike two!!!! Well the last straw was when we wanted to order some shrimp dumplings and she goes to say " you won't like" I said yes we will ! We had them before . Then she suggests their shrimp and pork dumpling. Mind u I don't eat pork akd tell her This. She says it's like a shrimp shumai. All the shrimp shumai ice ever rated has no pork so I ask and she says shrimp. Wrong it had pork in it and then goes to tell me all shumai has pork! I'm Asian no they don't . Not happy w the food or service tonight. We waited 45 minutes for the last dim sum to come after my meal was already there. My poor husband was eating my dinner bc he was hungry .

Really good dim sum. Very good selection, even some things not on menu if you ask. Service was good, they cook to order so will take a little time but worth the wait.

had golden chopsticks on xmas day! we ordered takeout this time... by the time i got to the food (i was busy yelping) it was cold.. so it wasn't as good.. BUT it was still better than 90% of the stuff around the area. (pawcatuck CT). i only gripe i have is that they still used styrofoam containers.. switch to metal or paper..

This is my go-to dim sum place. It's in a decent location with plenty of parking. They have three menus: Chinese, dim sum, and the second special Chinese menu. If you get the second menu (have to ask) it's all authentic Chinese food. I studied abroad in China in college, and it's the closest I've seen to the food I had there. I generally go here for dim sum only, though friend's I've been with have gotten Chinese dishes (General Tso's, beef with peapods), and they're all decent. The prices are reasonable, and they have authentic dishes like turnips with tripe. They get excited if you order in Cantonese, too. My staples are the jian dui (sesame ball filled with red bean paste), char siu bao (doughy ball with meat filling), mala dofu (fried homestyle tofu), wu gok (taro root dumpling), fu pei ha gun (fried shrimp), and siu mai (pork in wonton wrapper). They also have bubble tea, with a bunch of different flavors, which is one of my favorites. I get Taro, but they have honeydew, coconut, mango, lychee... Pop on over to the Chinese market next door to stock up on goodies when you're done eating!

After much thought I've decided to give this one 5-stars. I was originally at a 4 because this is not the best chinese ever however it IS on par with the best this area has to offer. I figure it's only fair to rank it among it's peers seeing how most restaurants would pale in comparison if ranked globally. The way I see it is if someone is in this area and they want Chinese then I do believe, in my opinion, that this is the best place to go. So..go! I have nothing more to add that hasn't already been addressed by the previous reviews although I did add some sweet pics! ENJOY!

  • Melissa D.

We went here for takeout based on the reviews and am so disappointed! I spent $50 and had the worst meal ever. So bad I brought it all back to them and asked for a refund they gave 40% back so I spent $30 on food that they kept and I spit out. The chicken fingers were over cooked, the chicken and broccoli was bland, the won ton soup tasted like pigs feet, steamed won tons were mush inside. Need I say more? To top it off I was advised to next time I try a new restaurant to get a small amount of food instead of ordering a full meal, instead of I am sorry. They guaranteed me not giving a second chance after that.

We are from NYC, and we believe this Cantonese place can survive there. Ask the waitress for authentic fare, with fresh produce from a nearby Asian grocer. A pleasant surprise for such a sleepy town.

My search for a decent Chinese restaurant in Westerly continues... Tried Golden Chop Sticks twice within the past month. Both orders were almost identical; General Tos, wonton soup, pork friend rice, crab rangoon. General Tos was ok.. better the first time. Crab rangoon was very good. Wontons in the soup were so over cooked they lacked any firmness.. a very musy texture.. translucent color.. not good. Pork friend rice was decent. Overall, I would give it a C. I wish Seven Moons would open a second location closer to Westerly... No delivery.. If they say 10 minutes pick up.. make it 25.

  • Pete B.

I am not going to drop 5 stars on this because I don't think they are doing anything better than "above average". That said, It is a strong 4! Even if you don't get totally swept away by the food, it is well prepared and fresh. It is also the best choice in the area for Chinese, and they seem to be very consistent. They lean toward more traditional style dishes, but I've been to China and if you want real Chinese food you are gong to have to negotiate or see if they have a "second menu".
