Great atmosphere and really good food... Drinks are well done as well... We tried the salmon and also the brazen hen which was fantastic...also the stuffies were very good as well.... Waitstaff was a little slow and the place was not crowded...not sure if this was a management problem of NOT assigning staff to specific sections... Because they seemed to be jumping all over the place... Definitely going back for another visit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The food here was very tasty! The ambiance is nice inside as well. We tries their cheddar beer soup and it was delicious...I also had their shepherd's pie and it was some of the tastiest I had...a little greasy but very good. The fish and chips were also ordered at our table and my friends liked it although it was also a little greasy. The portions are good too...I had leftovers. The staff was friendly as well. I think the prices were average. Overall I would recommend it.

Our first time time here for dinner. The decor is Irish / English pub style and nicely done, but with hard rock from the sound system. I don't know about you, but hard rock during dinner is NOT appealing. Don't get me wrong as I can rock out with the best, but it's not dinner music, hello !! The service was pleasant, but inattentive. The plate I was given for our appetizer had someone's else's food on it. Given the plates are white, how does one miss that? My wife and I split the buttermilk calamari ($10) for appetizer. It came with a fair amount of tentacles vs. rings (good to see). The portion was a little small. My wife liked the flavor with the peppers and balsamic, I did not. For entrees my wife had the Fish & Chips ($16). They were reported as NOT very good. I tasted them and concur. The batter was light, but greasy. The fish was overcooked. The "chips" are not proper chips but some seasoned, battered concoction. A disaster. We would not recommend the Fish & Chips. That said Fish & Chips are a mainstay for an Irish or English pub. One must get it correct. I had the short ribs with risotto ($26). The ribs were good size, tender and flavorful. I have had better, but these were good. The risotto was done correctly and flavorful. Broccoli rabe rounded out the plate. The house wine is a generous pour at $6.5 per. That said I had to return a glass due to soap residue. Three glasses of wine, tax and tip we were out the door for $88 and change. The minuses here out weighed the positives for us. I cannot envision coming back. There you have it. Magoo

Nice interior and decoration. Ambiance was so-so. Draught beer list was typical Irish with nothing out of the box. In fact, they had Sam Adams winter lager on tap, which thankfully was discounted. Food was average at best. The kitchen forgot the pears on our arugula salad. Pulled pork was tasteless and the fries that accompanied it on the same plate were soggy. Fish and chips weren't anything to write home about either. The batter was really thick and not crispy at all. Being from out of town, I don't think we'd return.

A couple months ago, we almost overlooked this place for dinner based on the 3.5 stars it had. We took a chance and were glad we did! Our server was so welcoming, attentive and friendly, especially with our toddler. I ordered their special, the Chicken Parmesan which was the best I've had. Thought I'd share a good review to bring their rating up so that they don't get overlooked!

We've been here twice for dinner and stopped in today for lunch. Each time was a good experience. The meals were all very tasty, the place has a nice atmosphere, and interesting decor. The service has also been good, although today I'd say it was more adequate than superb. On my first visit I wanted to try some authentic Irish food , and went with the bangers and mash. I really enjoyed it, but have no other experience to compare that dish with. All in all, I like this place and will definitely go back.

We decided to take a trip to Westerly and walked into this place without knowing anything about the Brazen Hen. I got the Ninja burger which was a different kind of burger in an Irish place. The Ninja had kimchi on it and I now want to make a burger just to put kimchi on it. It had the right amount of spice to it. The fries were perfect and needed no salt. The Shepard's pie was ok. Something we might not get again. It was nothing to write about. The staff was friendly and each waitress made sure all tables were taken care of.

I really liked this place. I was planning my companies Holiday party and needed to find a place half way between the offices in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Online, It looked cute and cozy, and It was. They helped me plan a great afternoon and everyone had an amazing time. The restaurant decor and layout are beautiful, my office took some great photos in front of the large fire place. The food was amazing. I was unsure what the quality would be like in buffet style and they far exceeded my expectations. People couldn't get enough of the appetizers and the main course dishes and dessert were great. The next time I'm in the area, I would like to go back and try more of their delicious food.

Well we stopped in Memorial day with our son, daughter-in-law and our 4 year old granddaughter. Now I know this is a bar/restaurant but it was completely appropriate place at lunch time for a family with a youngster, so I thought until we got our server at our table. Angela was terrible in regards to her table side manner. While not yelling at our 4 year old granddaughter she had NO patience at all for her. She told her to be quite I think twice and the rest of the time at the restaurant she spent less than 3 seconds at the table. When we would see her she would ask "is everything ok" and without waiting for an answer would whisk away as if she was allergic to us. Twice we had to go to the bar to re-order soda and chocolate milk. The food was good, I just would not go to lunch here with any kids, apparently they are not kid friendly.

I was visiting home after about 7 months and had yet to try this place. My best friend recommended that we go here as she has had good experiences. It's very close to Wilcox Park and very easy to get too! The atmosphere was very nice, maybe a little noisy. We went on a Saturday night so there was quite a few people, at the bar also. We were seated pretty close to the bar which is why it may have been pretty noisy, but my friend and I still had no problem hearing each other. I saw that people were being seated outside, but I didn't even know that was an option... Our waitress was pretty nice, she did her job and told us the specials and made sure we had our drinks topped, but didn't do anything really extraordinary. My best friend got the shepherds pie, which I hear is amazing. She ate the whole dish and she's pretty small! I forget what mine was called, but it was a pasta dish with chicken and mushrooms. I really love all three of those ingredients and thought the dish was okay. I ate about half of it but didn't take it home. It was a good taste, but not the taste I was hoping for, if that makes any sense. I probably wouldn't get that again if I went, but they had other options on the menu that I'd definitely try, especially the pie. We also got the chocolate mousse for dessert, which was very very good. It was a great experience! The prices weren't too high and it's a nice place to go to if you're in downtown Westerly looking for some dinner!

Ordered shepherd's pie. It's not shepherd's pie. Very easy guide: what do shepherds tend? Sheep. If it's a shepherd's pie, it has lamb, not ground beef. Period. No exception. Beyond that, for those of you who might feel that's overly pedantic (it's not...), the body of the dish tasted like a top notch sloppy joe. Very flavorful, but tomato based and very sweet. The only clue that this was a shepherd's pie was that it was covered with mashed potatoes. When a crappy chain restaurant screws up shepherd's pie, you understand, and probably expect it. When an Irish restaurant messes it up, it is very disappointing, and hard to understand. Service was ok. There were two people at the bar and two people in the dining room when we were sat, and we were made to feel like it was busy and we would have to be patient. There were no problems or big waits but we were a little confused at the impression we were given by the server, friendly though she was. I've heard good things about the place, but am definitely underwhelmed, despite the expectation of pub food. Unimpressive beer selection. With so many local beers, I expected more. Smithwicks and Guinness are fine, but not when they're the cutting edge of the group. If you want a good bar, head around the corner to Malted Barley instead. If you want a good shepherd's pie, make one at home.

Stopped in Sunday of Memorial Day weekend--the place was nearly empty--which should have been a sign. The host was friendly and helpful, but the server seemed bothered by our presence. We had a Cashew chicken dish and the Shepherd's pie. Both were unimpressive. Looking at the happy hour menu we had discussed coming back during the week, but after our meals decided we would find a better spot for happy hour. The food is pricey for not being particularly good.

My husband and I ate here about a week ago for dinner on a weeknight. We started off with the Ruben egg rolls. Very tasty. Honestly it's a fried sandwich in an egg roll. It's very filling so you may want to skip this as an appetizer. I had the crab cakes which were good but not the best I have ever had. Lots of crab meat with very little bread crumb. There was a combo of sauces on it that really didn't make sense. My husband had the short ribs which were terrible. Very fatty and were more like a roast than rib. Atmosphere was nice but the waitress really wasn't interested in her customers that night. She'd' run by the tables asking how the food was but never waited for a reply. Anyway based on the food aline there are much better places to go. Just okay.

Went here for a family dinner today (Sunday) the restaurant was empty. The food was very good and if that was the only thing to rate it would have received 5 stars. Unfortunately the waitress Angela was very unprofessional and seemed bothered that we were there. Asked us how are food was 30 seconds after we were served and never to be see again until we were done. When one of us asked for a water she actually said "is it ok if i use the glass for your lemonade and takes glass and fills with water"! We have eaten here before and have always been very happy but today service trumped good food at a nice restaurant.

I haven't eaten the food here yet but I came here with my friend to grab a quick drink and was most pleased at the atmosphere (dark, warm, and cozy), the music (the local band, happy and the moonshines, I think), the quality of the drinks, the kind and attentive staff, and fair prices. I definitely wanna come back here again and try some food. (Will update when I do.) I wonder how it'll be around Saint Patrick's day- being a Irish pub and all...

We ended up at The Brazen Hen by accident (oddly enough the two restaurants we tried to go to were closed for private wedding receptions) but ended up having a really enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is very nice and the decor is sophisticated and trendy all at the same time. We opted to sit outside, which as the night went on, proved to be a bit chilly (nothing a few heat lamps wouldn't fix). I would call the menu 'eclectic pub' - I ordered the Whiskey Peppercorn Steak and while it was a bit overcooked (I ordered medium - definitely came out well done) the mashed potatoes and whiskey peppercorn sauce were delicious. I did overhear another diner saying her tuna was a bit overcooked as well - perhaps an inexperienced or busy chef was to blame, but the sauce on my steak helped keep it moist. My sisters and cousins ordered the Mediterranean shrimp pasta, crab cakes and a salad and were all very satisfied with their meal. I would definitely come back and recommend this place to anyone heading to Westerly.

On a quiet afternoon. we visited the Malted Barley then The Brazen Hen, both are a very short walk apart(we parked on the street). The Brazen has beautiful rich dark decor with an upscale feel although it was casual. Bathrooms (yes I am raving about the bathrooms - as did my male companion) were amazing, must see for yourself. We sat at the bar and chose from a wide variety of brews and spirits. We shared a spectacular appetizer - stuffies - that were homemade and in a word "delicate". I mention both Irish establishments in one review, because while different, both are well worthwhile with different vibes, we would definitely go back to each one! Also I can recommend the hot cider with a shot of Jim Beam maple which is featured on the drink menu.

Probably exxxxxtremly close to the best steak I ever had. My wife had the striped bass. For all the restaurants, except Weekapugh Inn, the bass was the best. I am looking forward to going back.

Love this place! It has a great atmosphere, casual yet upscale its a great addition to westerly. This is my third time and it hasn't disappointed me yet. The she posts pie is delicious! Guinness French onion soup and the mussels can't be beat. Thursday night trivia caps it off.

Absolutely Horrible. Cold, soggy, flavorless calamari app, followed by a greasy, thin, lukewarm corned beef sandwich. The fries and service were marginal. Were there with 3 friends of the same opinion. Won't go back.

One word... Amazing. The Bison Chili is to Die for. The Whiskey Flat Iron with Mash is about as good as it gets

The atmosphere: great style and decor. Clean, nice restrooms! The food: good food. Tried the wings, the crab cake appetizer, clams with chorizo (yum!) and Caesar salad (one of the best I have had). The beer: meh... Not an overwhelming selection of craft beer but they have the essentials The staff: pretty good but I can't remember her name so I wasn't blown away.

The food is amazing. We have dined here several times and the 4+ star food keeps us coming back. Unfortunately, the service does not match what the kitchen puts out. We have had several different servers and not one of them has left a good impression. Lack of communication regarding delays, dropping of dishes, general unpleasantness- not things that should occur when spending decent money on a meal out.

This is possibly the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The staff was horrible and rude we asked multiple times when our food was going to come out and they kept saying "soon". It took over 2 hours for our food to come out. They constantly told us that other parties were more important than ours and our food should be out shortly. We finally got our food and it was horrible. No one finished the food. You're honestly better off going to Home Depot with a bottle of barbecue sauce and eating anything in sight. Atleast at Home Depot the people are actually nice to you

The food was tasty, came quickly, and the service was decent. The prices were a bit high for the food. My husband was looking for a pasta dish to carbo load for a race the next day. They provided, though there was only one real option. Again, it was good, but $17 for pasta and $8 for a few shrimps is a too much. Luckily the bartender was Irish, friendly, and gave me a free beer. Not a ton of vegetarian options. I'd go back for a Guinness and a burger, but not dinner.

  • Danielle E.

The food was pretty yummy. I got he turkey Caesar wrap and my friends got the grilled veggie wrap and the gulch. My friend with the gulch said it was a little on the greasy side. The bar was fully stocked with more options than I wanted to choose from which is awesome and the cutie bartender was a gorgeous sight and great conversation. It was a lunch date but I'd go again at night.

I thought the food was good. Felt the menu was a bit limited and pricey. They just opened so I don't want to be to hard on them but we had to wait almost an hour after we ordered our lunch before we received our food.

Great potential, bleh execution. The atmosphere is pretty cool, dark rich colors, good lighting, old arch. features. Our service was ok. Our waitress did what she was supposed to do, though she was not friendly about it. Our food did take a long time to arrive. One burger(asked for medium rare received well done) overcooked, the other undercooked(asked for medium, received rare). The prices are also a little high, and skewed. $14 for bangers and mash, $12 for a burger... I think you could go here and get lucky, a nicer waitstaff member, food cooked to order, and have a slightly overpriced good time. But I'm not counting on it, and probably not returning.

Wonderful friendly adult birthday celebration. Our party had the crab cakes and the "stuffies"-a spicy stuffed clam as the grilled veggies & Caesar salads for apps. The stuffies were a big hit being a unique spicy local twist of an old standard. These are not the soggy stuffed clams you can get everywhere, the stuffies were hot and crispy outside and spicy & rich inside. The cab cakes were full of crab bits and the sauce was a good balance. The salads were nothing wonderful. In fact the predominant flavor of grilled veggie salad was the charcoal grill marks on overlooked (pre-boiled?) veggies. The only disappointment of the meal. The main courses were all very well prepared. The bangers and mashed were served w authentic "British" beans and yummy onion gravy. The pulled pork satisfied our Southern kin and the pesto crusted salmon was a welcome twist on an old classic. A nice selection of brews and mixers complemented the meal. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The Hen is a good choice especially if everyone wants something different.

Waitress was awesome. So was just hot enough not to be sent back, second time guys ..soups gotta be hot!! Was tasty though. Got the curry dish, just barely hot enough but very tasty. My boyfriend had the baked haddock and had to send it back because it was luke warm. Flavors were great but come on....serve it hot!!!!

I went to the Brazen Hen last night for my friends birthday. We were only there for 20 minutes and the blonde bartender (maybe owner?) was completely rude to us. The bar didn't close until 1. We were there around 11:30 and she didn't want to serve us drinks/shot because she wanted to close early. I will NOT recommend this place to anyone and this bar/restaurant just lost 15-20 customers that were in there last night. This place doesn't know what customer service is. Thanks for being so rude to us. Whoever the bartender is with long blonde hair you need a reality check with customer service and how to treat customers in your place of work. Don't complain to us customers how tired you are and then how you don't want to serve us. How rude.

I can't figure out what all the negative reviews are about! I've been to Brazen Hen twice now and had a great time both times! The first time I went was during opening week. My three girlfriends and I opted for outdoor seating so that we didn't have to wait. Though the outdoor view is of the parking lot, it is one of the few places in town where you can enjoy some sunshine with your dinner. The wine selection was decent and wasn't too high priced. I had the house chardonnay... the pour was very healthy and the price was on par with everything else in town. We all enjoyed our meals and didn't have any problems. The only complaint I could maybe think of is that the service was a bit slow... but I go out to dinner for the company not to rush right through a meal. The second time I went with my boyfriend for dinner. We went on a Friday night, were seated promptly. I had the Brazen Hen for dinner and once again enjoyed my meal very much. The dinners are a tad on the high side price wise... but taste delicious!

So-so food, slow service. We showed up on a very busy night, so Perhaps I shouldn't complain all that much. However, it took at least one hour for the food to get to our table. I am Happy to see new places opening in Westerly, but I won't be going back here again.

I was looking forward to trying out the new Irish pub in Westerly. Frankly I was not impressed. The food was mediocre as was the service. I felt like I had walked into someone's "concept" of a pub rather than the real deal: it was much more like a Ruby Tuesdays. I won't be going back.

    (2)
  • Julie W.

I had heard mixed reviews, but we really loved Brazen Hen! We went late-ish on a Tuesday night and enjoyed their trivia night, so fun! The service was good, and our food was really great, I had the crusted chicken with some type of salsa on top. Great looking bar, I'm looking forward to experiencing the outdoor space this summer.

We were less than impressed. The menu is odd- they bill themselves as an Irish Pub & Restaurant, but the menu is a strange Irish/Asian/whatever-mood-the-chef-is-in fusion that doesn't really work. It's terribly confused & sadly, none of it is fantastic. The atmosphere & drinks are fantastic- if that's what you're after, you're in luck. If you want food, head to one of the other downtown Westerly establishments. (Though fair warning, for an Irish pub, the beer list is painfully small.) We tried an assortment of foods- losers: Irish Cheddar Ale soup, which is not only a painfully small portion but also more like a cheese sauce than a soup- it's been so overly reduced & thickened. Also, the Irish Crisps with garlic sauce & blue cheese. I'm not a big salt eater but even I was complaining abut the lack of seasoning. Also, it was a bowl full of chips with sauce on about 6 crisps leaving mostly plain, dull, unseasoned chips. It would be better if the sauce were on the side as a dip perhaps because these were, by & large tasteless. The winner was one of the night's random Asian specials which I won't bug you with since it's not a regular menu item. The rest was just mediocre. We'll go back for drinks, but the menu will have to improve before I eat there again. edit: 11/26 Returned over the weekend because some friends wanted to go. I won't go back. They "lost" our reservation & when they finally checked the reservation book they "found" it again but of course, it took them 30 minutes to put a table together for us as we had a large party (which is why we made a reservation). Other tables around us were served bread as they waited for their food, we were not. Worse, the food was again- bad. I ordered a Clam Chowder. How do you mess up a Clam Chowder in New England? I swear it tasted like someone had dumped a bottle of orange juice in it- so strange! But most of all, it was inedible. My friend seemed to really like her chicken, but other than that the plates around the table were generally half-eaten & thought of as mediocre.

This place looks great and it's very spacious. We had the calamari, steak, hen, and salad. It was tasty. The service was very good also.
