I was in York on Easter Sunday, when just about every restaurant was closed for the day. So I thought I'd try Chinese food and this one was the closest to where I was in West York. This is a sit-down style Chinese restaurant, although they do of course have takeout. I thought the pork with spicy tea sauce was pretty novel and a bit different from what I usually get at a Chinese restaurant. At least on the evening I was there, service was rather good and they were fast and eager to please. This restaurant is definitely worth a return visit, hopefully before the next holiday when everything else is closed.

New to the West York area, just moved in and needed my Chinese food fix. I wasn't disappointed! The General Tso's was great! The sauce was a good mix of sweet and spicy. I will definitely go back, they have a new customer!

Just had the fried wontons. Yuck. Mystery meat. Service sucks too. 2 stars for the hot tea and egg rolls

Good food and fast carryout service. I am giving only 4 stars because the spring rolls and pu pu platter are not the greatest. I find their rice paper has a weird soap taste, so I avoid those dishes. Some of their seafood dishes are a bit pungent. Eggs rolls and soup are excellent. Sesame chicken and crispy beef are great!

This is an excellent sit down Chinese restaurant, very clean, very friendly, and the food was delicious. I had the shrimp fried rice and it was filled with big, juicy shrimp. My wife had the Shrimp with spicy tea sauce and said. Both the shrimp and vegetables were crisp, fresh, and spicy. Bill for the two of us was $22 plus tip.

I grew up in York and now live in St. Louis and this is a MUST every time I return for the holidays. I have been on a quest, ever since I left, to find a restaurant that can replicate the deliciousness of Shangrila's sesame shrimp (it's on the menu under the "chef's specialty" as sesame chicken but they will do shrimp instead of chicken upon request). I cannot find anything that even comes close. This is, without a doubt, the best Chinese restaurant in the York area. Both carry out and dine in, the service is excellent. My standard order is sesame shrimp and broccoli with garlic sauce. The broccoli is always so fresh and crisp. Never greasy or mushy. We order dinner here as a family quite often when I come home and I've heard them rave about the shrimp in chili sauce, the vegetable lo-main and shrimp fried rice. The short....if you're looking for chinese in York this is where you want to go, and, order the sesame shrimp. You wont be sorry.

The place was clean. Not too crowded. Decent service. The beef broccoli was good, but the sauce kind of clumped on the broccoli. The combination fried rice was odd... it had lots of crunchies in it. I suspect that it included water chestnuts and it had HAM instead of bbq pork. It also had little chunks of that baby corn. Hmm. I was able to eat it but my dinner companion turned up his nose at such things. The bbq pork, I thought it was odd, but my companion liked it. It was served on a bed of lettuce, which sort of flavored the pork. I could go again, though I probably wont. They have a very expansive menu.

Since I don't live in PA anymore it was a real treat to be able to stop in over the recent Holidays again. I used to eat here all the time! Their food is one of the best Chinese I've ever had and they have so many good items. Their vegetables are always very fresh, the cuts of meat are typically always very good and their fried rice is not too oily. My favorite from them is the Mei Fun (no mushrooms) which I have a hard time finding at other restaurants typically. They're fried rices and lo mein, are great and recommended for lunch specials. Their Chicken and Broccoli was my favorite for a very long time. The Broccoli is just too fresh! Beef is good too. The orange chicken used to be strips of white meat in the amazing orange sauce which is pretty spicy. Which is amazing compared to the typical battered and fried chicken that most serve. If they changed to fried maybe you can request the old version. Definitely worth it. Huge fan of their oolong tea (Ten Ren brand) and noodles which go great with their Won Ton soup! Oolong tea makes goes with the food and you should consider it instead of soda honestly. The staff have always been great and when we went all the time, knew us very well and would practically bring our food right out.

It was nice to see an actual sit down place that wasn't just the back room of a carry out. The dining area was nice, the staff was friendly, and fast. The food was pretty good. We had a limited meal, but I can say that the Egg rolls were superb. Crispy, hot and not oily outsides, with crunchy, fresh, abundant filling. The best I've had locally. The Bean paste buns and steamed pork dumplings were really good. The Stir Fried rice noodles were ok. The noodles weren't anything to write China about, but the accompanying veggies and meat were well prepared and tasty. The Hot and sour soup was abundant in sour, but needed more hot. I'll return, because overall it was a well prepared, tasty and affordable meal. Cheers!

Yes food was good but the service was terrible!! It took almost an hr to receive our food after ordering. I mean people came in after us ate and left. Yes it was that bad! To top it off no apologies were offered or even a discount. Food can be the best but without customer service.....

This place tastes like my childhood. I've been going here literally my entire life and I wouldn't change a thing about it. When I open the door and bells rings as I take a sweet inhale of Chinese tea, I know I'm in for a delectable ride. It's my go to spot whenever I travel home for the holidays, and I expect it to be, so long as my parents live in York. The service is always great and the food is always consistent. I've never had a bad meal here. My favorite dish is the shrimp in spicy tea sauce, but I save that for special occasions. My regular is the shrimp and mix veg with the brown sauce. It's light and refreshing and everything it should be. The owner always serves me vegetable dumplings when I walk in, as I've been frequenting this place for eons. Shangrila, I await your Christmas decorations this year...

Very polite service and a great interior do not make for good food. The crab rangoon was good, but how can you really mess that up? The sweet and sour chicken was chicken in soggy bread, and the sauce was all sweet, no sour. When I get sweet and sour chicken I just want juicy, crunchy chicken, not a bunch of green pepper, undercooked carrots, chunks of onion, and pineapple with soggy bread chicken. Especially for that price! I got a take out bag and was expecting the normal service of utensils, soy sauce, a napkin, and fortune cookie. I got none. And there was no little stand for me to have even gotten it from. When the bag is stapled shut for a TO GO meal, you expect it to be done for you. For the price I was very unhappy.

I've been here twice. The first time I went was several months ago. I wasn't that impressed with my dish the first time. Last night I went with bf and it was marginally better. they served the rice in a metal container as opposed to a bowl. It wasn't that easy to get out. They charge for drink refills. I had orange beef. It almost tasted burnt but maybe it was because there was more breading than actual meat. The orange in the dish came from some dried orange peel, which is a little tough to eat. I've had better and for less. I compared it to my local restaurant, China Wok in Swatara Commons; the flavor was better and the cost was better (10.95 at Shangri-La and 9.65 at China Wok). I think I get more for my money at China Wok. Since bf lives in York, I think I'll tell him to find a new Chinese restaurant.

This is the best Chinese food in York County. The restaurant is clean and the service is good. It can get crowded on weekend evenings. Takeout in 20 minutes or less.

My parents love this place, but I have better service and food at a food court. The food is your run of the mill Chinese, no surprises here except for the price. For pretty much the same food you could get from a steam table at the mall, they are charging way too much. Maybe it's for the atmosphere? Nay my friends. The decor is dark with the obligatory large creepy koi fish tank at the door. The service is substandard considering every time we go there we are one of only a handful of tables. I warn you now... DO NOT ORDER AN ICED TEA! Unless of course you like your tea to taste like it was made by brewing a burnt stick instead of tea leave, then by all means, be my guest. The chicken and broccoli was standard as were the egg rolls and soup. BORING

  • Hello T.

Let me first off say that the only reason it gets 5 stars is because this is the best Chinese food in the area by far. I am Chinese, I have eaten in chinatown in new York, San francisco, and Vancouver BC and I had very low expectations of this place. However, the food was surprisingly good and authentic. Chinese mushrooms just like my grandma used to make! The menu consists of normal American-Chinese fare but I found the dishes to have clean flavors, close to real chinese home cooking. The Singapore rice noodles were not greasy and had a good amount of seafood and pork with a nice amount of curry. The owners were mandarin but I was able to order some dishes in Cantonese without a problem. Some Americans are used to Chinese food that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot long chopstick, but Shangrila is close to the real deal and I will be back. I found our first jewel in the rough while I'm stuck in York for another few months.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
