I chose this place on the way home from church with my Wife and wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. We sat at a table in the middle of the restaurant. We have been coming to this location for years and the layout is pretty standard with the bar as you walk in with booths on either side and tables in the center down to the front which is stepped down and has a window view of the highway. We ordered a queso fundido and we're practically full when our order came - I ordered the guadalajara special and she had a combo platter. I was barely able to finish and was almost feeling a little discomfort since the portion sizes are large. I was trying to clean my plate and the food was tasty so... August, my wife did not finish and took half home for dinner so you definitely get a lot for what you pay. I feel as though the seating layout is slightly crowded at times base on how busy they get, but on a Sunday afternoon it wasn't too bad. The food is better than average and they have American food choices for those who aren't as adventurous. I have ordered steak, seafood, mole, fajitas and guacamole as well as fried ice cream and flan and it was all well made. Not necessarily the best there is but a high level of quality - the value is what you go to El Rodeo for. I condiser this a fine place to go if you want something uncomplicated and satisfying.

Very generous with the simply tasty chips and salsa. My wife and I got three baskets without having to ask for a single one. The spinach enchiladas were fully stuffed with quality green spinach. The quac salad could be more than just shredded lettuce with a spoonful of guac. The drinks are well made, but also quite pricey. Service was prompt and friendly.

El rodeo s usually pretty reliable for a good quick lunch or dinner. The food is really good and the service in York is much better than it used to be. The Chips and Salsa is worth the trip in. Go during lunch for nice specials 2 people for under 20 bucks easy.

Fajitas Texanas is my go to at any El Rodeo location. The beef is always seasoned well, the peppers and onions cooked perfectly, and the skillet comes out sizzling with a lemon on top. Burrito Ranchero is the wifes choice she can never finish the massive rolled concoction. Service was quick and we were able to get our Mexican food fix and bounce without losing half a day waiting.

I'm afraid I must dissent from my friend Jason E.'s review. El Rodeo may not be authentic, but what they are is reliably satisfying. Service has almost invariably been *very* fast every time we've been. They make a good impression at the outset by serving fresh hot homemade tortilla chips and homemade salsa (heavy on the cilantro, thank goodness!) as soon as you sit down. The menu is conventional but lengthy, with pretty much every variation on the meat-tortilla-beans-lettuce-tomato-cheese theme one expects at an American Mexican restaurant. A lot of restaurants lose points for focusing on the entre and serving bland, generic sides; not El Rodeo. They stand out by serving genuinely tasty refried beans and seasoned rice with their dishes. I will refrain from speculating on the caloric cost incurred by El Rodeo's consistently good soul food. It's probably safe to assume that this is not the best place to go if you're on a diet. But for a fast, satisfying family meal in central York, you could do far worse.

Love the food. Pepe's Combo is my favorite. Service has always been friendly. Great chips ad salsa. We even order to go quite a bit.

El Rodeo is good. It's good, seriously. They have a super friendly staff, consistently hot and fresh food, and a fun atmosphere. It's certainly not hard-line-authentic mexican food, but it's a great dinner with friends or family.

This is my preferred Mexican restaurant of choice in York, PA. Yes there is the Fiesta Mexico but that location does not do the chain justice. I have not been to the El Rodeo in Harrisburg but have heard equal compliments there as this one here in York. Always a busy joint for dinner, hopping in the summer. Great margarita and best of all, prices are actually reasonable and well-priced.

3.5 Stars Cool looking chairs and tables. One of the worst chile rellenos I've ever had. I guess I like the more authentic stuff. If you're into frajitas, yuppie-mex, etc. Than this is the place for you... If you want authentic Mexican. There's a lot more to be had. UPDATE: The following dish has earned El Rodeo an entire extra star. This dish alone is worth going to El Rodeo for... Molcajete Strips of steak served over a bed of rice in a special sauce with cheese and cilantro. Served with beans and three flour tortillas - $11.79

I agree with the reviewer that said that El Rodeo doesn't make a very good chile rellenos. Try El Serrano off of Market Street for more authentic Mexican food. But for cheap American Mexican eats, El Rodeo can't be beat. Any of their combinations provide a massive amount of tasty, cheesy goodness that can be washed down by a pitcher of Dos Equis. I especially like their tamales. The beans are also very good, and not the throw-away that you sometimes find at Mexican restaurants. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, most of their lunch specials go for $4.20. You can't beat that! I get a beef chimichanga for lunch, eat half, and get another meal out of it for under five bucks. Sometimes it can feel like the waitstaff is ignoring you, but if you have a little patience, most of them are pretty nice. Overall, an extensive menu full of tasty, cheap treats. And did I mention, pitchers of Dos Equis?!

Love love love! Every time I come to visit my parents in York, I have to go here. Best salsa on the planet!

I love eating at El Rodeo for a quick lunch or for a family dinner. Their menu is large and has a variety of Mexican food to suit all preferences.

WHY? Why is this rated above 2 star? The food was bland and the service was terrible. I've never eaten something covered in cheese taste so bleh before. Even Taco Bell has more of a taste than this stuff. Worse than that... the service is awful. Granted I don't think the servers speak much English, but that's not an excuse for being rude. Our plates were literally tossed onto the table like a poker dealer would pass out playing cards. When we went to collect tossed plates, we burned our hands because they were so hot. When we turned to say something to the waiter, he was already gone, not to return. There must not be any decent food in York for this to have been rated so high. I know this isn't authentic mexican, but it could at least have flavor.

  • Ann S.

The food is nothing special. It's decent Mexican with good portions and good prices. The service I experienced tonight left much to be desired. Drinks were not refilled, empty cups and plates were just left sitting, I never got the guacamole I ordered with my entree (and the server was nowhere to be found) and even though we asked for separate checks at the very beginning of the meal, the server messed up and charged some of us for other people's foods. I very rarely tip less than 20%. Unfortunately, this was one of those times. The service was appallingly bad.

I make a point of stopping in to the El Rodeo in York whenever I'm back home. I live in San Francisco now, and have had the whole authentic Mexican experience sesos taco and all. It's tasty and different, but I grade american mex as a separate category (much like Americanized Chinese food), and El Rodeo heads up that particular category. Fast service, always yummy.

  • dave w.

gotta say, best americanized mexican food around, pretty much the standard menu of enchiladas/burritos/fajitas that you'd expect. they're not heavy handed with spiciness or complexity, but the flavors are good and consistant, keeps me returning every so often. perhaps the biggest complement is i passed a bunch of hondoran, mexican and peruvian cooks, i work with, going in to eat when i was leaving and they admit it's pretty good food too.

Good eats, terrific lunch specials, and really cool waitstaff. If you work in the city and want a quick, tasty, and fairly inexpensive lunch - this is a good resource.

El Rodeo is a standby. You will never come here any separate time, and come across a different flavor. They are very consistent, and you can count on a great, hearty meal every time. I have to say, its hard to find any place on the east coast that is completely authentic mexican, and I take many people opinions of mexican with a grain of salt, considering I grew up in Los Angeles CA. With that said, I will say that El Rodeo is nothing to sneeze at. Most of the food is better than average. Simple, hot, flavorful and fresh, I am never disappointed (unless I order a relleno, I couldn't find a poblano if i had a microscope). The staff is very friendly and will have you seated as soon as possible, your food will arrive quickly and the prices will be more than fair. I dull my expectations of flavor and excitement when I am in York, but this place never serves up dull food. We may all expect more flare, but when it comes to good Mexican, I say, the simple the better. Well worth the small amount you'll spend to dine here.

I was visiting my mom this weekend and we chose El Rodeo since we were both cravivng Mexican. We actually wanted to go to MexItaly, but we realized that was a counter-service spot with no bar, so it was just not an option. As soon as we got there I was a little put off by the number of signs handwritten with sharpie on typing paper and scotch taped around, saying things like "No Personal Checks Please". The idea of writing a check at the end of my meal did make me giggle. The place was pretty cheesy and 70% of the other diners were morbidly obese. One of the waitresses was wearing a flashy silver grill over(in place of?) her front teeth. We ordered mojitos, which were on special, and we each had to order three times before our server understood what we wanted. He was totally Mexican, and that's totally cool, but he was also a total dick. When he brought the drinks out he served us each other's. We were getting a little crabby. Then we tasted them, and they were great - my mom got Chambourd and I got guava. The menu was huge and had every combination of taco, burrito, and tamale you could possibly think of, but again ordering was a huge hassle. The combos were even numbered, and I ordered a number one, and I still had to point at the menu, and then the server took it from me and looked at it some more. While we were waiting for our food, I decided to flip through the little dessert menu thing, and was horrified to find it was sticky and had food crusted on it. That thing should be wiped down no less than daily, right? So the food comes out but we still haven't been served the guacamole that we ordered as an appetizer, and he acts like its a big deal to get it. Also my mom asked if we could both have water, and he brought one, and then was a jerk about getting me one too. After we were finished eating we waited forever for him to get boxes for our leftovers, and then he disappeared without offering us our check. The food here really was good and satisfying, but the truly terrible service will probably prevent me from ever returning.

I gotta say, El Rodeo has always been good when I have been there. It is simple basic food, served up quickly with a minimum of fanfare. It is fresh and tasty, and I go home happy each time. Pricing is good, and the food is really consistently well done. My take....Authentically tasty food beats authentically mexican, italian, etc every time. If I want authentic Mexican, I can always go to Mexico, or at least close to the border.

Love this place. The decor is family-friendly and cheery. Food is good, and the prices are reasonable.

My favorite restaurant when I visit home. The staff barely speaks English but the food is excellent. Also inexpensive enough that you could eat there twice in one day. This place is definitely worth trying.

I have eaten there since before 1997, and I love that place. I returned to PA to visit family and I ate there Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. This time was probably the only time I ever haven't been completely satisfied. I love there refried beans and chips. Both Friday and Saturday the chips seemed a bit well done for my taste. I got the Chicken Chimichanga dinner on Friday night, and A chicken soft taco with bean and chips for lunch. Both meals were awesome as always, and super cheap. When you sit down, they bring chips and salsa. The salsa is good, and has a little kick to it. This is the best Mexican food I have found in that area. They have another location in Harrisburg, that I have eaten at several times as well. Always good food.

We had a hankering for some Mexican food while on vacation in Pennsylvania and turned to yelp for some help. Based on the reviews we stopped at and rodeo in York on our way to Lancaster Pennsylvania. The decor is your traditional Mexican interior... Lots of bright colors and carved wooden toucans and sunflowers. Prices are reasonable, the waitress was friendly and the chips & salsa were delicious. I ordered the chile rellenos with rice and beans, and "G" went with the Chile Verde burrito. My chile rellenos were...meh..uneventful. They used Anaheim chilis vs the traditional Padilla, so I didn't fund them as flavorful either...but hey it was worth a try. *Side note... Who knew there was such a thing as white nacho cheese sauce and that you could use it in Mexican food...shrugs.* Anyways.. These cheesy babies garnered a 1 1/2 Noms on my three Nom rating scale. The accompanying beans were good and flavorful .. the rice was also good, I'd say better than most rice you'd find in a Mexican restaurant (I'm a total rice snob). Ok, now for the chile verde burrito.... "G" and i both agree that it was a solid 2 1/2 Noms. Had it had less lettuce and no sour cream it would've likely been a 3 Nomer. Who knew the folks in PA could do Mexican food like that... !Ay Caramba! Overall it was a good find and I'd recommend El Rodeo to anyone passing through...but skip the chile rellenos here unless white cheese whiz is yo thang.

We enjoyed our meal, had great service, and paid a fair price. Stopped here with the 'rents when they visited from Texas. Chips were warm and crispy, salsa was delicious, and beer was frosty--definitely an auspicious start. I had the Fajita Texanas, which were pretty good and Dad clearly enjoyed his Beef enchilada plate. Mom had a Chile Relleno that was weird. There was no discernible stuffed pepper, just pepper chunks and mush. The taste was just OK. Everything else was good.

Another mexican restaurant. Nothing special but I do love mexican food!

OF all the Mexican restaurants in York, this is my go-to Mexican restaurant. It can get slammed here due to being on Route 30 during dinner time so if you don't mind the wait, it's worth it.

  • Deborah W.

Really liked this place the first time I came. It has good atmosphere. This time the food tasted blah. The service was good, but the ingredients they used? The cheese? No spices or as someone else wrote where was the lard? Won't be back.

Great food, Great portions. Authentic, Flavorful, Good Prices. Interesting menu with many options. Can be under-staffed sometimes which makes refills slow. Chips and salsa are great!

I talked my husband into eating here with me. I'm a huge fan of authentic Mexican food. I was NOT disappointed! The food was delicious and the prices were great! My husband got the chicken fajitas and he loved them! I got the chicken quesadilla combination platter and it was excellent. The staff is very friendly. Warning: This is authentic Mexican style cooking. If you are looking for Americanized Mexican food, taco bell is down the road.

3.581 stars I've seen this movie before, I swear I have and that tune playing during the credits too! Been to mini-Mexican chains like this in the Northeast, Mason Dixon land and the Southeast. They cater to the gringos, like me, and those not like me. El Rodeo is more authentic than most food-wise although the bulk of the menu is heavily Americanized. The prices are quite decent and you can feed the family here for poco dollars and be quite full while getting your drink on. They have public service signs in Spanish and English that indicate if you dont' drink responsibly they will cut you off, or words to that effect. The room is large with cozy booths and tables. It gets crowded on weekends and you can wait at the bar(if you can find a seat) or on a bench. The bar is good spot if you are just two and you don't mind the traffic from the kitchen. They were playing (sat or cable feed?) Mexican music that wasn't quite Narcocorrido yet also not Mariachi with a healthy dose of Mex-Cowboy/Country. It had a good beat and you could stuff your face to it. The chips and salsa were thin crisp chips that might have been made on site, they tasted "muy fresco", and the salsa had a decent kick-in-the-pants, the guacamole side we ordered was less impressive, a bit bland. The chile rellenos appetizer/side was a bit heavy but it lasted only seconds. The Enchiladas Verdes was a also a bit heavy but I enjoyed it. The offspring ordered a dish that can only be described as Mexican "Chicken Parm" or Pollo Chilango, a new dish to me, again on the heavy side but he thoroughly enjoyed it. The stock Margaritas are sweet mix and a bit watered down (see disclaimer above), they also have a great selection of Mexican beers, not just the usual suspects. The service was friendly and speedy, we went before 7pm on a Saturday night it was at about 90% capacity and waited less than 15 minutes to be seated. *parking lot is big but tight watch yourself backing out. *NEMF not exactly mexican food but it'll do in a pinch, especially in an area where there are mostly mega-chains. *I did taste the presence of lard in the food so that's a data point for authenticity.

yelped food as i was out of town here...got solid reviews. i went there and ordered takeout. maybe it sounded like i said i wanted to 'take everyone out' with the imaginary weaponry i was carrying... but eventually i got my: carne asada burritos - rice - black beans - side of chips and a small salsa i went back to my hotel to eat it and there was no plasticware. boo. the meal was good - not great - and the running around to look for utensils already had me flustered. there are a lot of places angling for the yelp $$$. even a small faux pas can hurt you here, amigos... id go elsewhere next time.

I've been back to this restaurant twice now, at times other than lunch hour. The food and service was good. I retract my previous review with one caveat. Lunch hour during the week can be crowded,

  • Kelly K.

I had a yummy Burrito Verde. It was loaded with fresh carnitas (shredded pork) and a little rice with cheese melted on top. The side was lots of iceberg lettuce and a big heap of fresh sour cream. I would have like a little refried beans instead of the lettuce. Interior of restaurant is fun with wood carvings of wildlife on the chairs etc. Very colorful. Service was a little lacking but the taste of the food made up for it. Cost was very decent at $6.59. Intend to return and recommend for a quick bite while going on 30 through PA.

What can I say. Great food at great prices. We were amazed at what we got for the money. Definitely an incredible deal for the money. The wait staff was really good. There was a bit of a language barrier as expected, and a bunch of communicating through head nods and hand signals, but he was attentive and right on time with everything. The only thing keeping this from five stars in my opinion is the size and acoustics. Right before we were seated, a group of 30 something women were seated for an obvious "Mommies Night Out." Although they were on the opposite side of the restaurant, they made it a point to let the whole restaurant know about little Timmy's preschool, the husband's promotion, upcoming trips to distant vacay points and the like with each one having to outdo the other in grandeur and volume. While this is hardly the fault of the establishment, their gibberish, nonsensical, trite conversations were the only downside to an otherwise enjoyable dining experience.

Pretty inexpensive, good food and full bar. Service was a little harried but the place was packed. All in all a decent choice.

I've been coming here for years. I've always had two favorites; the chalupa Texana and now nachos deluxe. Both delicious dishes that are very affordable. Food usually comes within 10 minutes at most, I definitely recommend. Not most Mexican places compare to this!

  • Leica G.

This place is always busy and it's because of the delicious food and great service. It may not be on the menu, but do yourself a favor and try the horchata! It's a rice milk with cinnamon flavor. Refreshing and cool! Wonderfully complimentary on the palette with spicy dishes. Also, the enchiladas poblano mole is to die for.

This place was pretty good for out in the middle of PA. The decor was interesting and up lifting. The food was pretty good. The prices were reasonable. The margaritas could've been a lot fresher. The serves could've been more attentive. Overall it was pretty good.

Tonight's service was quick and efficient. My friend had chicken quesadilla rellena was very flavorful with side of rice. The hubby and I had the chicken chimichanga which was fried just enough to be slightly crunchy. They were filled with shredded chicken topped with lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. Ordered the queso, with free chips and salsa. The queso had a slight kick with the bits of jalopeno. Overall this was great food and great service.

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant ever. We have been going for years and we still compare all other places to this for the authentic Mexican food.

I have never liked Mexican food. That is until my husband and son brought me to El Rodeo. The portions are huge and full of flavor. Not a bunch of hot sauce, but real vegetable, beef, chicken etc flavor. No masking their food. It's truly delicious! the wait staff have always been great. You can order your food special if you like to. Ground beef vs shredded beef...vegetables steamed instead of fried.

I have had El Rodeo food delivered to my home on numerous occasions. Always super pleased. My favorite is the Grande Dinner. That and the complimentary chips and salsa are just about enough meal for two people. Makes a pretty good deal.

5 starts for decoration love it nice and clean large parking, they have authentic Mexican products love it. I give 3 starts I am a little demanded in term of food their chicken was unsalted and untasted. super hot no spicy HOT careful with that

I love El Rodeo. Returning to York, it's my first stop for the lunch chimichanga special and fried ice cream. Chips and salsa are awesome. They have recently changed their policy on the complimentary chips and salsa refills to where the first bowl of each is free. Be ware, the homemade hot sauce is really hot. Tasty but seriously hot!!! It's a must stop place on a trip to York!

I went to this place with my sister and her 2 children. The place was doing a good amount of business when we walked in, and I was hopeful, as I love Mexican food. We were seated, and after about 10 minutes our flustered server came over to take our order. Before she was able to run off, I asked for chips, salsa, and some lime wedges. We got chip crumbs, murky salsa, and dried limes. Hoping the meal would be better, we were disappointed again, as we were served our lukewarm meals sans the black beans we asked for. We flagged the server, and asked for the beans which she promptly brought back. However, it was clear that they came directly from the can, no salt, pork-belly or spice added and not heated...flavorless! We asked for the check, and noticed that there was 20% gratuity included. Being a Bartender/Server myself, I found this very odd, as there were only 4 of us at the table, and 2 were children under 10. I asked the table behind me if there was gratuity added on there check, and they said "no". Being a fan of Scooby Doo, The Three Investigators, and The Hardy Boys, I decided to get to the bottom of this plot which was definitely thickening. I asked the Manager at the cash register why it was added, and he said "Because the computer randomly adds it to checks". I was flabbergasted! I told him to "remove the gratuity immediately, and it was clear that they were up to no good, which was comparable to the quality of the food which is only marginally authentic. We didn't ask for anything to be taken off the bill which clearly should have been comped, and he assumed that we would be bad tippers, which is why they added it, hoping it would slip by our eyes." He did remove the gratuity, and the black beans. We paid, tipped and left. I will NEVER return to that joke of a restaurant. It appears that customer service has gone the way of the Dodo Bird, particularly in this "Mexikitsch" eatery. You would do well to steer clear of this "Ol' Rodeo".

Been here a few times and the food is consistently good and service OK. But we were a bit disappointed when we recently tried them for takeout. The food was prepared quickly, although there was some confusion about which items were ours when we arrived and the cashier seemed annoyed to have to deal with takeout orders. The food was decent and still warm enough when we got home. But they've become very stingy with the tortilla chips and salsa! They provide you with a free small brown paper bag of chips--about 7 or 8 chips--not even half what you get in the basket when you dine in. Want more? You can pay $1.50 for another tiny bag or a whopping $8 for a regular-sized bag with a cup of salsa! Next time we'll probably just stick with Chili's for takeout. Food ready in 20 minutes and you can get a big bag of tortilla chips and two tubs of their tasty fresh salsa for $3.

I have eaten at El Rodeo twice and have ordered carry-out meals several times. This used to be a fast food restaurant of some sort. I like their chicken chimichangas and chicken enchiladas. The food has a good flavor without being overly bland or spicy. I always save half of my meal for another time. The chips aren't the best and I don't particularly care for the salsa, but at least it's free. I believe the menu is the same (or nearly identical) as the one for Fiesta Mexico. My only complaint is that when I order multiple meals for carry-out, what I am given is not quite what I ordered over the phone. Overall it is a nice Mexican restaurant with generous portions of food at a reasonable price.

Always a great meal and a good deal. Wish I could find a salsa in stores that tastes as good as theirs. Flavor trumps spiciness.

We are from Arizona and know good Mexican food from bad. My wife said the shrimp quesadilla was the best she's ever had. The shrimp was sweet and tender, the vegetables were grilled perfectly to compliment, and the cheese was creamy. My shrimp enchiladas were just as delicious. This place is a winner!

Salsa too thin, but food was pretty good. Next time I will order a bottle of beer. If they have Pacifico and the lime is fresh, they will get five stars.

Amazing food! I'm from NYC and will put this restaurant up against any Mexican place in NYC. The enchiladas verdes were so delicious as was the fajitas my fiancé ordered. Patron Margarita was great as well. Another thing I love about this place is the decor- absolutely beautiful and creative!

If you really have a taste for Mexican food, this should be your go to place. Everything is fresh and served hot! The chips and salsa are fantastic. Great beer selection also. I have eaten here for years and found this little place to be family friendly.

I am a Mexican food snob.... don't get me wrong, I will eat any Spanish food you put on my plate, but I have special plate in my heart for El Rodeo. Stopped here on a whim, driving back from Ski Roundtop. Upon entering you can't help but notice all the vibrant colors and decorations... it really is a beautiful setup. So what makes me love El Rodeo, you ask? It's simple... the service is attentive, the establishment is clean and always has seats available and the food is phenomenal. I've ordered the vegetarian chimichangas and they are the bomb dot com! My boyfriend has ordered the fajitas picantes - which are super spicy, fresh jalapenos fajitas, with warm tortillas and is placed on your table - sizzling and crackling. This is THE BEST Mexican food I have ever had and I have had quite my share. If you haven't tried this place, you are most definitely missing out on the orgasmic burst of flavors.

Excellent Mexican food. Reminds me of many restaurants in TX and CA. We usually get take out from here, but have also eaten in. Service was very good. Take out orders are always ready quickly.

  • Ty S.

Really York? 4 stars? This place was gross. Dirty bar...employees left over food just left at bar seat next to me. Lazy manager just sitting in a both staring into space. Chips that were so stale they were chewy....too bad because the salsa was good. Entree was bland. No taste, no spice. Awful.

  • H. R. A.

Excellent selection with great prices. Each of us got something a little different and it was delicious. The food was top notch traditional Mexican style and came out pretty quick and very fresh. Caution: if they tell you the plate is hot, it is....it really is! The service was a little slow, our waiter was nice but definitely took his sweet time.
