Pleasantly surprised. I went there for lunch with my parents visiting from France. I turned to yelp and found the Blue Heron. Not being from the area and being accustomed to a bit of overstatement when it comes to "French" I was a bit leery, but definitely I would come back. The lunch menu was succinct but to the point, the daily specials where varied and plentiful. The flavors where strong but no heaviness and the presentation was simple without being ostentatious. Deserts were great and the service was smiles and attentive. Great place

My favorite restaurant in York! My parents had always raved about it but I hadn't yet eaten here. We ordered the calamari to start (2 orders for 6 of us) and it was light/tasty. I'm not a fan when the calamari is too breaded or extra fried. I got the escargot as my entree with a side salad because it was a Friday during lent. My uncle got the chicken salad sandwich and he loved it. My brother got the burger and said it's one of the better ones he's ever had. Overall it was a great deal considering the quality of the meal, service was above average, and we will most definitely be back!

Good food, excellent service, and nice ambience. Have been here several times for lunch with friends. Everything I've ordered has been delish...especially the coffee.

I had the Surf & Turf and my wife had the Parisian Chicken. I had the froglegs as an appetizer and my wife a pan seared Tuna fliet. We came here on a Saturday night and although we had no reservations the Matre D' was so gracious as to find us a table for two at a moments notice. The waiter was so friendly and when we asked for a couple French Martinis he went and made them himself and they were perfect. So happy with our dinner tonight and we look forward to going back. Excellent fine dining experience!

Very nice dinner with friends: Cesar salad just the right size; Parisian chicken surpassed expectation with a creamy light sauce with onion: side broccoli was fine; excited to find a blackberry sour available; lamb was ok but hubby would have spared the beef sauce; salmon got a good review; crab cake passed muster but price was steep. We will definitely return to try other items. Portions were healthy and some were enough to split.

First of all, this restaurant has moved to a new location on the eastern side of York, in a nicely refurbished former italian restaurant. Secondly, it now has a bar, and it is unclear if you can BYOB these days. the website says no, but the wine list is sub par for the food and friends tell me that you can bring a good wine for a corkage fee. Probably should call first. Thirdly, this was one of my favorite places in York when small and intimate and when the owner did the cooking. In the new place, my first time the owner was greeting and hosting, with other cooks in the kitchen. My ratatouille was not microwaved properly and had hot and cold spots, my dinner mate's crab cake was fairly good. the positive was you could get a drink before dinner. Finally, a much larger wait staff, still being trained, I never got any bread and service was slower than usual. I hope the issues are worked out, I like it so much in the former place it will probably be worth trying one more time, then back to the Left Bank or Commonwealth room for this price.

The cuisine and service was excellent. The owner was very nice and cared about service. The food was very good, I ordered salmon which was executed well. I will be going back!

Birthday celebration 6/22.....(I think I am finally caught up) York doesn't have a slew of nice restaurants to offer and this one is a gem a mist a sea of culinary poison. Okay...that really isn't dramatic. HA! Wines.....Macellac (red wine)and Vouvray (white wine) no complaints both were delightful. We started with cream of crab and the soup du jour ( Amelia Remeno Vegetable) the crab soup was tasty but the taste and texture changed dramatically once it cooled, normally I would scarf it down but we got caught up in conversation and...well, the last spoon wasn't nearly as good as the first. The soup du jour was disappointing the favor flat and not much more than bullion. The birthday fella didn't complain but he wouldn't....I wasn't thrilled. :( The next course, our salads Chevre (goat cheese salad) and Roasted Red Beet (with blue cheese) both were delightful even if the beet salad had blue cheese not mentioned on the menu. To be fair....the blue cheese was limited and provided just enough tart to go with the sweet of the beets. Main Course I got the lamb chops which were well prepared except one was too pink for my taste....the server took it back and straightened that out. The other selection was peppered tuna which was off the salad menu but a dinner portion was created to keep the birthday boy smiling. We were both pleased with the selections and they were well seasoned. To finish shared Pistachio Chocolate Cake. Yummy good. Hints: French wine can be pricey and added what could have been a 3rd person to the bill...be prepared to pay more for quality. With that being said, if you are local, the peak radio station runs coupons for this restaurant fairly often. I hope this doesn't mean the restaurant is suffering we can' t afford to lose what little culture we have in York. There are several works of art for sale decorating the walls of the restaurant so it's a mini gallery as well. Okay last thought....we got a really comfy table with high back thick upholstered chairs which sits 6 (maybe 4) it was VERY comfortable make a point to call ahead and request one of those tables there are only two. Our server was Shannon and she was very sweet making sure I had a written list of all we enjoyed that evening. Good thing since I am so late getting the review done. Also...we were late getting there and leaving not once did we feel rushed. Thanks Shannon. Okay NOW I'm done.....hehehehehe

We were visiting our son who lives in Dallastown. This was the best place we've ever been to in this area. I don't usually go to French restaurants because the portions are usually too small, the food is really expensive and the places tend to be way too pretentious. This place is great. None of these problems here. We loved everything. My son is a vegan and they were very accommodating. I had the haddock and ahi tuna appetizer. Good portion and really well prepared. We also had the mussels and seafood mix. My son had the ratatouille which was great. We had a cocktail to start. The winter Manhattan was really good. Then had a bottle of very good French burgundy with dinner. Also had dessert, fruit for my son and peanut butter cake. So good. The bill with tip less than $300. A good deal for a fantastic meal.

I've been fortunate enough to have traveled in France a couple times, so I was very interested in the Blue Heron. The service, even for a late lunch, was impeccable. Our server was very friendly and detailed oriented and had no problems answering my questions. We got the table with the high back chairs which were super comfortable. The French Bordeaux was pricey at $12 (I was warned) but I felt like treating myself to a glass of wine that costs more than I usually spend on a whole bottle. My bf got a nice Pinot Noir. For lunch I had the steak frites. The fries were excellent. Skinny and crisp like bistro fries should be and they came with a spicy aioli. The steak was extremely tasty and made to order (rare), but it was thinner than I would expect even a lunch steak to be. If it hadn't tasted so good, I would've been seriously disappointed at $14.50. My bf got the beef bourguignon for $14.50 and it was fantastic. A big bowl of beefy stew in a wonderful sauce just made for soaking up with bread. I would say the downsides included wrapped butter pats. I hate that in a fine dining setting. It makes your fingers all greasy and just feels more like a diner. Paper napkins seemed odd in such a nice restaurant. And a very pungent cucumber salad came on the same plate as my steak and some of the brine permeated a part of my steak, which I wasn't too thrilled with. I'd recommend putting it on another plate. Also, no croque monsieur! I was really hoping to see that on the menu. A well-made one is hammy-cheesy thing of beauty. But apparently they only put them on as a special now and then. With that said...we really did enjoy our experience and will go back.

Here they care about the food and your enjoyment of it. Careful preparation, artful presentation with service designed to make you comfortable. Don't miss the mussels, the lamb, the steak au poivre, or the fresh catch of the day. Truly a destination restaurant.

Was very disappointed... The exterior was previously an Italian place...the menu is obviously French, they are plainly trying to be a French restaurant...The prices are expensive...I mean very, very expensive for the décor...the food and presentation. There seemed to be more people working there than eating there...we had a minimum of interactions with 5 different people working there, 1 to greet us, 1 to take our coats and 3 different people working our table. For starters I had the tomato soup which was good 5.50...nothing special; my girlfriend had Hearts of palm $8.95...again it was ok. I had the shrimp and scallops which were 26.50 that came with sautéed cabbage and plain rice...there were 3 medium to smallish shrimp with the shells still on them...and they were grossly overcooked - there were 3 very small scallops, about the diameter of a quarter...they were perfectly cooked however - overall I felt very underwhelmed with the offering for the price. My girlfriend had the Tenderloin which was 29.99 - that came with the same sautéed cabbage and mashed potatoes - the beef looked like a cut from the butt end...had sinew and gristle - it was ordered medium and came mid-well...more well than mid. The potatoes had several whole raw garlic cloves in them... I don't mind paying for quality...and have often spent more for a meal. We spent about 120.00 with dinner drinks and tip - for the ambiance and the food quality we were dissatisfied. I feel if they cut back on the staff they might be able to reduce the food price...We won't be going back anytime soon

The food is Ok. If you are a meat and potatoes kinda person that stays away from most white table cloth restaurants, then you will probably like this place. Its nice, but not too nice. (Full Disclosure: I am married to a chef) The Blue Heron chef like's putting the same sauce, and lots of it, on some of his dishes. The appetizers, while they looked good on the menu (goat cheese with shitake mushroom tart and scallops wrapped in bacon) many things were clearly purchased precooked and then reheated/cooked. The entrées ranged up to about $29. I got the steak, which was cooked nicely and had good flavor, but wow, way too much sauce (the sauce is on the plate, not on top of the steak). To me, a great cut of meat is meant to shine with little else on the plate. My husband got the pork tenderloin. It was doused in the same sauce as the steak, which made no sense to us. If you have to cover your food with a ton of sauce, you are hiding the fact that something is not cooked properly. The pork was over cooked. Again, overall the Blue Heron is good, and I would say it's worth a visit - its one of the better places to eat on this side of town. They are a BYOB, which is nice. We are wine snobs, and really enjoy the right wine glass with our wine. They had those old short, small, thick-glassed wine glasses - I hate those!! If I bring a great bottle of wine, I want to really enjoy it - I can't do that without the right glass. I know, snob. Desserts were nice. Nothing special, just nice. Atmosphere is very small and basic- I think they made the most of what they have. They could make it better just by adding candles and dimming the lights. Also by upgrading the silverware and glassware. It could go a long, long way.

"Mmmm not quite up to my expectations. We were greated and had pur coats taken, very nice. The fresh bread was good and we enoyed our appetizer and drinks. I had the over cooked chicken and my wife, the over cooked rock fish. The service is nice and friendly. We were hopping for gem on the Easy End and found a rock. The food needs to improve for us to return for what they charge. "

The owner/chef from the Blue Heron used to be the owner/chef at the Blue Moon downtown before it changed ownership. I enjoyed the french bistro cuisine at the old Blue Moon and continue to enjoy it at the Blue Heron. Specialities are their seafood particularly their mussels. The only downside is the atmosphere - the new restaurant is in a non-descript location on S. Queen St. - and the last time I was there, no liquor license.

Uniqe restuarant for York, Pa and excellent quality and value. This restaurant should be listed as french/ american food because many (if not most) of the entres are french cuisine. Very very high quality food creations here and an awesome pre-fix menu with three courses for under $30. The muscles are mind blowing. For what it is and being located in York Pa, I just couldn't recommend it more. enjoy.

Here's the thing are we judging by York standards or big city standards? Points for being quaint and off the beaten path but honestly they fail to execute on their culturally confused menu. I've had much better ...

amazing. went in for lunch and had the mussels. They were AMAZING. if you are in the area and dont go here then you are an asshole and deserve a crappy meal at whatever restaurant you chose instead of this one.

This is a gem on the eastern side of York. The food is always very good. Standard French-American fare. They have excellent mussels if you like them. The service has always been excellent when we have been there. It is BYOB which I personally like because it saves you money and allows me to bring what I want. The specials are usually very good and creative. The decor is nice but the restaurant is small, it only seats about 35 people. I recommend reservations on the weekend. It is in a nondescript location on Queen street near the South York diner. You could drive by it 20 times without realizing it. The bonus is that you don't have to drive downtown. I personally don't care about the silverware and the wine glasses. I prefer they concentrate more on the food and they do. If you want excellent food in a spartan, but intimate atmosphere, and don't mind paying a bit more, this is the place to go. It is one of the top 5 restaurants in York.

Tonight we got all gussied up and set off to dine on hopefully exquisite French fare. Blue Heron was brought to my attention by an article in YDR some time ago. The restaurant if very small with calming blue walls and a crisp, clean ambiance. The service is quite good, and David (Da-veed'), who was running the establishment, was charming and affable. I ordered the beet salad, escargot, and Mediterranean lamb stew. The ingredients of the beet salad (beets, greens, bleu cheese, and walnuts) did not mesh well. It was all tart with nothing to add layers of interest to the flavor. The escargot was well prepared, but rested in an uninspired butter and garlic sauce. I love garlic and butter, but it just wasn't anything creative or memorable, and the radishes that were added for garnish slipped and drowned in the butter, losing both texture and appeal. Lamb stew was something I hadn't had since I was quite young, and it tasted the way I remember it--from 30 years ago, with no updated zip to it. Once again, good, but not exceptional. The side of green beans was overcooked and settled limply by the side of the stew. Because the menu is so limited and the restaurant so small, I would expect something more outstanding in preparation and presentation. Nothing popped visually or taste-wise to me. I suggest the kitchen take a few risks and add some excitement to its cuisine.

This is a new restaurant and my first visit. The aesthetics of the room were OK but there was little to no sound system with music. Otherwise, my wife and I had oysters to start, salads, salmon and pork chops. Everything was fresh and delicious and prepared as ordered. Nice drink/wine selection for dinner and the dessert was also tasty. We dine out three to four nights a week and this will be a place we visit again. BTW: The wait staff was extremely polite and helpful which makes a tremendous difference. I would highly recommend going to Blue Heron. If they had music for ambiance, they would get 5 stars.

We called in concern in trying to book a private dining event with Blue Heron. David picked up the phone and upon trying to solidify the details of the event we would like to have had David kept asking "Oh what company are you really from?" and also said "why don't you just email me so I can figure out if your company is legit". This is not an experience I would like to have while trying to book a private dining event with a restaurant and found it to be extremely off putting and rude. We will not be using this restaurant at any point in the future.

I cannot say enough how much my family and I love this place! My Grandmother is French and goes to this restaurant very often. David, the owner as well as his staff treat her as if she was their grandmother. She is spoiled rotten. The waitresses know exactly what cocktail she wants and how she likes it. (Blackberry martini.. Deeeelish) Anytime I am in town to see her we make a point to go to our fave restaurant. The service and food is spectacular. All of their dishes are delicious, but I highly highly recommend the beef bourguignon.
