    I think all the people who gave good reviews don't know what Italian food tastes like. Plus the service is terrible. Just get out of York and make the trip to little Italy in Baltimore.

    Ate here about a month ago. Was staying at the courtyard while my parents were visiting and needed a place close by to go for a laid back meal. Service was a little slow but we were by no means in a rush. Very good food for the price. Food was comparable to victors but a good deal cheaper. Got some canolis to go which hit the spot at about 11 pm. Had a great meal and I will be going back in the future.

    Had to get my Wife to the office of Immigration to get her Biometrics for the FBI taken. After wards we felt like Italian. Since it was only a half mile away, this place won the coin toss. It was completely empty for being a Tuesday afternoon, not the kinda place it would seem that people hit up for their lunch breaks. The wife had a craving for just simple alfredo, and not seeing anything that was blowing my skirt up, I decided to give one of their stromboli a try. The server was attentive and patient as we took our time glancing over everything they had to offer before finally settling into the above mentioned items. Cooking time was 13 minutes. The pasta was delivered first along with a side of grated parmesan. One bite and the wife decided it was fantastic the way it was and she didn't need the extra cheese. A minute or two later, my boli was delivered. It was sliced ham and sausage and cheese in a folded over pizza crust. Rather lackluster given the prices of everything else on the menu. No herbs or spices on the bread or inside. It was basically sliced watery ham and sausage with the consistency of steak-ums. Due to the ham being the type it was, my plate was, after a minute, swimming with ham juice, which caused the bread to turn into mush. Definitely have had better, but I chalk it up to this place being mostly a high end pasta joint, seeing the reviews here raving about those dishes mostly.

    Thanks to a friend who told us about Bel Paese restaurant we recently went check it out. The restaurant is in a little shopping plaza near the York Toyota Dealership from the outside it does not look like much but to our amazement when you enter the restaurant is decorated with a nice Italian flair. We have been to a lot of Italian restaurants in Central Pennsylvania but what is refreshing about this restaurant is the food is all fresh and I mean fresh. I do not know how they do it but I was excited how they can wake up your taste buds to good tasty food. Wife and I have been back twice so far and we are planning to take another couple there today. We had a waiter named Patrick who was outstanding waiter and takes time answering any questions. It is refreshing to have great food and service at one place. Another point is unlike other restaurants Bel Paese menu covers a wide variety of food choices and the plus is that the daily specials are unique and different from the regular menu. We are glad we have another good restaurant to go to in Central PA.

    Sometimes I forget to yelp about places I take for granted and only yelp about "new" experiences. We go here about once every 3 or 4 months. I am a big fan of their food, the only issue I've ever had is getting a table because they are so busy. Don't let the cold strip mall exterior deter you. The food is great, the service is great, the interior design is cozy, they just need a fireplace! Try the eggplant fries you won't be disappointed.

    Bel Paese is the REAL DEAL ITALIAN! I lived in Rome for a year of my life... I know Italian food. This is the way Italian food should taste, if you do not like what the serve here... you do not like Italian food. Everything is fresh and delicious! I drive out of my way just to eat at this restaurant. LOVE IT, This truly is... AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

    Caught an early dinner this past Saturday with my brother from Philly and did not expect such a great Italian restaurant in York. From our server Laura to Salvatori's daughter, we were treated as family and not pressured to eat and get out. By the end of our meal (we took a couple hours) the place was humming so we relinquished our booth to another couple. Both our entrees were prepared excellently; however, with Pasta Carbonara I prefer the egg yolk whole (the chef had already mixed it even though I inquired how it was served) so I can finish the preparation at my table. Eventually, the pasta became dry since they make it fresh daily. But, alas, I devoured it and wiped my plate clean! The place is reseanably priced, too. Two dinners, a house salad, and three red wines: $58 + tip. Overall, a solid 4+ stars.

    Amazing Italian food. Inconsistent service, more often bad than good. Best lasagna ever though. The always tasty food has kept me coming back for over a decade.     Absolute worst meal experience of my life. 1.5 hours waiting for our meal and now they want to bill us for our meals plus the couples next to us. Luckily our children were amazing while sitting for two hours and a mediocre meal.

    This was our second visit and we came back for the Lobster ravioli that was amazing the first time. Our second visit was a little heavy on the sauces - too much lemon on the chicken piccata and the ratio of sauce to pasta was doubled :(... The dinner salad was nice but tomatoes were not fresh. However the creamy Caesar was good. This is a mixed review

    I love Italian food, so when I saw this place, I had to try it out. Seemed like a small restaurant, but the food is delicious. Tried out the Rigatoni Amatriciana and it was a great dish. This dish had an amazing pomodoro sauce.

    This is the best Italian food in York. The fresh bread is excellent. Pasta is superb. Daily fish specials are usually excellent. Even the fries and chicken fingers my kids eat are way above average - good meat, light breading, fries are unexpectedly delicious. The kicker is that he has amassed the best wine list in central PA - especially considering the prices. I have eaten at all of the best restaurants in York, Lancaster and Harrisburg, and Bel Paese has the best selection at the best prices hands down. It's not even close.

    A little sleeper of a place that should be better-known than it is. A lot of that has to do with the location, in a nondescript strip mall off the Memory Lane exit on U.S. 30. The site itself is pretty pedestrian, with a healthy take-out business on one side and a small dining room on the other. But Bel Paese, if not authentic Italian, is darn close. For starters, its antipasto is first-rate. All the expected goodies, and lots of it. A $15 appetizer plate will set two people up nicely. They provide fresh bread to go with olive oil and spices -- just like a good Italian restaurant should. The wine list is above-average. And I've had some memorable entrees. An authentic spaghetti Carbonara. Orecchiette with a delicious Gorgonzola sauce. I haven't gone for lunch, but the pizza and sub menu looks pretty good.

    We placed our order and waited from 5:30 until after 7:00 PM for our meals. The food, when it came, was good. The people are nice. Yes, they were busy, but this is the longest I have ever waited AFTER placing an order. The service is so abominable that I would advise avoiding this place unless you have at least three hours or more for dinner.

    Tonight, I got the lobster ravioli with shrimp. The shrimp were terrible and had a chemical and metallic taste. I was unable to eat the dish after tasting the shrimp. I quietly told my server that the shrimp were bad and Sent the dish back. She took it and asked if I wanted anything instead. I declined because I felt nauseous. The manager then came out and told me the shrimp were fine bc they didn't smell and said I was wrong and proceeded to demean me. I explained they tasted bad and I refused to eat the dish. She then billed me for it anyway. Luckily my server was kind enough to remove it after I told her I wouldn't pay for that dish. I will NEVER eat here again. I never had to send a dish back at other restaurants and I eat out a lot. Terrible customer service. Could have been handled much better.

    Found this place via Yelp while traveling home from Hershey Park. I had the Mare di Monti, linguini with mussels, shrimp, scallops, clams and mushrooms in a plum tomato red sauce. Wife had Orenccetia (sp) with portabella, prosciutto, and basil in a tomato cream sauce. Both were good, fast, and worthy of a casual dining experience. What this place lacks in a fine dining experience (which it does not claim to be) it more than makes up for in fast and friendly service. I would definitely come back.

    We visited this Italian restaurant because it was rated so highly on Yelp. The Yelp rating was later confirmed by the staff at the York Courtyard Marriott, who enthusiastically encouraged us to go there (as well as to El Serrano, a Peruvian restaurant in York that also should not be missed). We were not disappointed! The oil offered for the bread is infused with herbs, and has a wonderfully fresh and delicate taste. The bread, brought warm, almost hot, to the table, is made on site, and is delicious. We ordered the gorgonzola salad as an appetizer and it was large enough to share. Our waitress told us the dressing was made on site. The cheese and the dressing on this salad were both wonderful and the greens were very fresh. My husband and I both opted for pastas with sauce, which is a separate section of the menu. I ordered the pesto sauce and he ordered the oil and garlic; we both ordered bow tie pastas. Our waitress, who was very kind and patient while we took our time making our selections from the large menu, told us all of the sauces are home made, and even if she hadn't said anything, we would have known. The dishes were delicious and the portions were generous. We live in a town (Collingswood, NJ) where there are more Italian restaurants per square mile than maybe anywhere else in NJ (or so it seems!), and we were both very favorably impressed with this Italian restaurant. They offer home made, home style Italian food with generous portions. Very basic. Very satisfying. Very good! Wherever you are from, I encourage you to go and give this restaurant, which places such value on home made sauces and dressings, a try. I'm confident you won't be disappointed!

    Interesting experience. Good food, great server. We did, however, get some pretty patronizing treatment. We had 7:20 reservation for 8 people. At 8:05 we got to observe a party of 17 with an 8 pm reservation be seated ahead of us. When we raised our concern the person behind the counter took a serious attitude with more than one person speaking to her. Then over dinner when 2 in our group had to leave early for an appointment, they asked to get theirs to go (with no ill intent). Then the cook came out with two huge tickets (probably for the group of 17) and yelled at us for not understanding how busy she was. Totally crazy being yelled at with an Italian accent. It did authenticate the experience.

    Great meal. We had a large party (7 people, I think), and it would have been better to seat us at one of the large, round tables rather than pushing the smaller ones together, but those were all occupied, so I guess this was the best way to do it. They have whole wheat pasta, which I loved. One thing I found odd, though, was that the bread and olive oil they provide when you sit down has no seasoning it it at all. It was good, but my personal preference is some kind of seasoning in the oil to make it wonderful!

    i tried Bel Paese at an off hour (really late lunch) and found the food to be excellent. Service was excellent, but the food was really superb. I haven't had such good italian in a while. I'll definitely be back.

    Saw the reviews on Yelp. Decided to check it out. Last minute decision. Got there in a hurry at 9:25pm. Kitchen closes at 9:30pm. Lady at front desk was nice. She still took in my takeout order of Alfredo pasta. The Alfredo sauce lacked salt, spices, & cheese. I don't really think its worth $13.

    We've been back to Bel Paese several times since I first yelped in July -- every time, we get a consistently good meal. Not the very best Italian I've ever eaten, but always very satisfying, good flavor, large portions and a good value. On an evening when we're wanting a good but uncomplicated meal, Bel Paese is on our short list. Favorites: Linguni con vongole (linguni with clams), pasta puttanesca. We haven't tried anything but pasta dishes yet, but like all the ones we've had. Good, reliable choice for basic Italian.

    First time at this Italian restaurant. My husband and I both had ravioli and it was decent. I had cheese ravioli with a tomato based sauce and my hubby had the spinach ricotta ravioli with the vodka sauce. They were both above average in taste, but small portions and large prices. They asked if we would like a salad with our meals but when we saw that two dinner salads were almost six dollars, we declined. And if you wanted garlic bread, it was two dollars more. I think it's ridiculous when a salad is not included with the meal, it's not like it is expensive to make. So after the meal we shared a dessert, a cube square dark chocolate and white chocolate mousse dish that was very good, but again, extremely expensive. It was over six dollars for a very small portion, not enough to share. The service was fine, no problem there, but way overpriced and way too small of portions.

    Came here last night with coworkers. Totally agree with previous two reviewers that this is a solid Italian restaurant. The decor was pleasant. Nice chairs and table cloth. One the walls are painted with some copies of classic Italian Renaissance paintings. One member of our party is extremely picky on her choice of pesto, and she gave this restaurant a total thumbs up. I ordered the Tortellini Chicken soup and pasta de sarde for the main course (pasta with sardines, pine nuts, anchovies, & raisins in a lite tomato sauce)--it was extremely good and I savored every bite. Last night they had a special of homemade pasta and one of us ordered it and that also received some great praising. Excellent Italian restaurant. Very authentic and homemade feel. The service was friendly and professional. The place looked rather quiet, but then again a lot of the nicer dining places around here seems to be not too busy in the evening.

    I wanted to give them more stars, but they fell just a bit short for me. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, better than most italian places, but it wasn't the best I've had. Again, I'm really picky when it comes to italian food. I ordered two things on two different occasions, ok maybe all at once, just kidding! not! ;-) The first thing I tried was their house salad (7.25). This is no ordinary house salad my friends(my McCain impression), it can be a meal. It's romaine lettuce with italian meats! (salami, genoa, pepperoni), mozarella cubes, not fresh :( marinated mushrooms (read canned or bottled) and artichokes (also tasted canned), cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers black olives (canned) and onions. I'm not a fan of canned veggies. So this sucked for me. The only saving grace was the italian meats. Even the lettuce was limp and not all that fresh. So skip the salad! unless you just want the italian meats. The entree I tried was their Orecchiette Portobello (14.99). This is definitely something you don't see in many italian restaurants, especially small one's like this one. Orecchiette are my favorite pasta shape. This dish is ear shaped pasta tossed with portabello mushrooms, prosciutto, basil ( I didn't see any) in a tomato cream sauce finished with fresh mozzarella. The pasta was al dente and despite the lack of basil, it tasted great. Unfortunately, the more I ate, the saltier and saltier it got :( I had to stop because it was just way too salty. I'll give this place the benefit of the doubt and try it again.

    A nice Monday evening dinner, coined by our server as "a busy Monday night". They had four servers on the floor, plenty of coverage; ours was very friendly, attentive and accommodating, thank you Alexis! The Valley of the Moon Pinot Noir remains on the wine list, 2012 vintage from Carneros Sonoma Valley. Get it if you like Pinot Noir. The Orrechetti Portobello with prosciutto never disappoints, it is the only dish I have ever ordered there. We added the house salad with house dressing and I finished off with tiramisu. I understand some of the reviews here as we've had substandard experience before as well, but wanted to throw out stars for Alexis and the chef tonight as it reinforced why we keep going back, this is a good place for Italian food.

    Went here with the family based on other Yelp reviews. Definitly a good place to eat. We went later on a weeknight, about 8:30, it was easy to find and quiet. The place is definitly low key and basic. But, we were seated quickly and had cloth napkins (always a nice touch). I like that they served a basic bread and oil so that a person doesn't fill up on that and then doesn't enjoy the meal. For the appetizer, we had big, beautiful shrimp with a lemon sauce and eggplant fries. Both yummy and served warm. A decent sized selection of wines. I forget what the rest of the family had, but I am a semi-picky eater and they had no problem making my order to my specifications (and I don't believe there were any extra charges for it either). It was delicious and I definitly was a little sad when the food was all gone. Even though we didn't have any, the desserts were gorgeous and homemade looking. Staff was very friendly and quick. Enjoyable late night dinner.

    This is my second time eating dinner here and the food was as good as it was 5 yrs ago but different items ordered. Capress.....yummy good the fresh mozzarella tastes so much different from store bag chesse but I'm feel certain the olive oil was a blend, it was too light tasting. Dinner Salads....fresh and tastey. Fusilli Spinaci.....you could really taste the smoked cheese, very well made from the texture to the spinach which wasn't over cooked. I ordered a side of Italian sausage something I rarely get since this part of PA treats all sauage equally unseasoned which makes it impossible to determine Italian from Polish. :/ The menu indicated it is home made. While the fennel flavor hit the spot the sauage definately had too much salt and on some bites it was the predominate flavor, over the fennel even. Aso.... it was either over cooked or extremely lean....I'm thinking over cooked. Puttanesca...This was a hit with the birthday fella. He went on to explain the origin of the word which delighted me and had me giggling knowing the table next to us could over hear. Puttana.....in Italian means a woman who sells her body for a little money... sometimes just for pleasure. To go...a pizza with Portabella Mushrooms. I tried it the next day and it was excellent!! Crust and cheese....suddeny, the standard offerings at the local piza joint looks dismal. Overall the food and service was good and we will go again.

    Revisited this after a great meal several years ago. Very good food. Service was excellent. I was alone but felt welcomed. And the food was perfect homemade Italian from the warm bread to the fantastic side salad to the lasagna!!!!!

    My wife and I most recently ate here on Friday, August 28th, with two friends of ours. We have eaten here several times over the last 10 years or so. As always, our meals, drinks, service, and overall ambience were simply excellent. We highly recommend Bel Paese. It is undoubtedly one of the best Italian restaurants in York.

    WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS PLACE?! I used to justify the prices. Usually enough for leftovers. Last time I ordered the bolognese, there was plenty in the take out container. It was filled to the top. A very pleasant Italian woman, who I believe was the manager or owner, took care of our orders. The food was phenomenal. Tonight, I ordered the same dish. It looked 1/2 empty. More importantly, the taste was incredibly disappointing! I've made authentic bolognese. The taste should reflect the hours put into simmering and developing the flavor. This tasted like a jar of ragu. Even the pasta was terrible! Pieces were sticking together and it was slightly undercooked. Fresh made pasta from the grocery store tastes better. My garlic bread cost an additional $2.00 and it was a bit overcooked. I agree with the other suggestions. There are better options in this area. Do Yourselves a favor and try Victors or Marinos instead. I brought this issue up to a friend, who originally suggested this place a couple years ago. I don't care for gossip, however, they were under the impression that one of the owners cooks sometimes. Or there is a new cook, perhaps. So, I suggest this place, if you're willing to CALL and ask if one of the owners will be cooking.

    I'm with Philip - this is the most solid, easiest place to recommend in York. I grew up here and visit my parents regularly....I always want to try different restaurants but unfortunately York is just not quite there yet when you're used to urban dining options........but Bel Paese is really quite good. They also deliver via Carryout Courier which is nice when you've got a lot of people around and no one feels like cooking or going out!

    Ordered a pizza to my hotel, it topped any of my hopes. Great crust, plenty of toppings, a little light on the sauce but the flavor more than made up for it. Also got a side of cheese sticks and the marinara sauce was outstanding. I will make a point of going there to dine next time I'm in town.

    Delicious! We had food delivered to our hotel via Carryout Courier. Everything was delivered as if it had just come out of the kitchen. Tasted fresh & quality made. We will definitely try this place again.

    The food here is decent, albeit overpriced. You can find better Italian food in york at victors and even Marinos. My family has visited this place a few times, but our last visit was particularly disturbing with the service and a very hostile interaction with who I can only assume was the manager. She was an Italian woman, which is why I assumed she was the manager, although she never identified herself The issue stemmed from a mistake by the waitress, which was honest. She was young, but was friendly. I had ordered a sauce substitution on my entree, which was chicken parm. I can't eat tomatoes, so I requested a pesto sauce instead. When the chicken came out, it had a red sauce, and I told the waitress I could not eat it. She apologized, and took it to the kitchen. In about 10 minutes, I had the correct thing... No problem, it happens. When I got the bill I noticed I was charged an additional 3 dollars for pesto on the very small side of pasta, and an additional 3 dollars for the teaspoon of pesto that they spread over the chicken cutlet. I thought this had to be a mistake, so I said something to the waitress and she said the manager billed it that way, although she said she did not understand why. So, asked to see the manager. Shortly after an Italian woman walks toward the table and starts addressing the situation loudly from several tables away. Her tone was rude, and inappropriate from the onset and she cut me off 3 times. She tried to rationalize the separate up charges, of which I said was ridiculous and accepted the fact that this woman was unreasonable and that I simply would never return. Even though I gave her my card, she continued to make a scene, which upset my 4 year old daughter. It was really a joke, I was honestly embarrassed for her. So, although the owner once had a great pizza shop in my home town of red lion many years ago, I will never visit this place again.

    Found this place by mistake last fall...since then my girlfriend and I have been there three times and all three have been a pretty good experience. I've made reservations there twice, once on NYE and there wasn't an issue..the other time I requested a wall table but once we got there we were unable to have it because of large groups...no big deal but it's just a warning because there are always large groups for dinner (wine drinkers and they hangout) I love the Tortellini chicken soup and usually get Lasagna or Rigatoni. Girlfriend gets seafood linguini then we top it off with a slice of triple chocolate cake...NO HITCHES! *cute waitress too!*

    Local favorite, a family-owned Italian restaurant. Was recommended to go here from the former owners of our house when we moved here in 2000. Still enjoy them, they now have a liquor license and a nice variety of wines. The owners and staff are very friendly and offer a very warm inviting atmosphere. People are talking and having fun, but it is not loud. The food is very good and consistent. They have a very flexible menu, with standard apps and entrees but includes a section where you can make choices of pasta, sauce and ingredients. They have specials nightly which are variations on the menu, not just price markdowns. They have tables which can accommodate a group. I always walk in meeting a smile, and leave wearing one. Forget the big chains, this local favorite is worth your visit, time and time again. Note, they are closed on Mondays.

    Yelpers you have failed me. This is, without a shadow of a doubt in my mind, consistently the best italian restaurant in York. The amount of love and taste that goes into the meal, the atmosphere, and the service, is clear. This family-owned restaurant sits inside of a strip mall but dishes out some of the most amazing italian food in the region. Don't forget the killer wine list. If I can recommend one restaurant to people coming in to York, this is it.
