After reading all the reviews (good and bad), I decided to give this place a chance. I had the small 2 choice plate, with the tri-tip and kalua pork. First of all, the portions were HUGE, pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the beef; tender and the flavor was above par. The pork was okay, a bit on the salty side and a little dry. My two complaints: the rice, way overcooked. And the potato-Mac salad was just plain awful! Tasted of cheap mayo, and nothing else. Tons and tons of mayo. I took a couple bites (thought it would get better if I tried again) but couldn't touch the rest. Very disappointed, I always look forward to that with my hawaiian food. All in all, wouldn't recommend to anyone. Unless they're looking for decent tri-tip, ala carte.

If this rating was solely based on the Kahlua pulled pork it would be 4 stars. However the rest of the food is not on the same level, not to say it is not good, it is pretty good though similar to many Hawaiian BBQ places that I have been to excepting the pulled pork which was fantastic. So if you are in the mood for some sweet sauced BBQ and some macaroni salad this is the place to be. Id recommend the pulled pork however as it is particularly good.

I have eaten at Kona many, many times in the 13 years since they've opened, more times then I care to say. I ate there for the first time, the week they opened and the food has always been consistently great, authentic huli-huli style BBQ, that Steve smokes daily. I've actually watched him tend to his BBQ out back. I have tried the other "Hawaiian" places around town (as well as some in other cities) and I prefer Kona's food. The other places around town do feel a little much like a chain, Kona is definitely a mom and pop. You get big portions for the money and their prices have been the same since they opened. As for the comments about the flavor of this or that and the use of "liquid smoke" all I can say is that I have eaten here since they opened and the food is just a good as it was then and I'm pretty sure Steve doesn't have a need to use liquid smoke. I've tried everything on the menu and some I like more than others, just like any food at any place. Maybe try something else on the menu next time? Someone said that it made them upset that there are items listed on their menu that they don't have on hand, well that just means next time get in before they sell out... ;)

ugh. being raised on maui I am picky when it comes to local food. this was awful. first Teri sauce was not good. kalua pork was dry. Mac salad was gross. all the reviews above must not have ever been to hawaii cause this place is not good local food.

Food is hit or miss here and they usually run out of stuff. I love the pot Mac. I also love the tri tip on a good day. Sometimes its super dry and bublately that has been the case but occasionally it's so tender and juicy. Wish I could sample a piece so I did not have to pay for it when it's crappy. Pork is always really good though. Kinda not very comfortable to eat in. Usually get to go order

Best Hawaiian food in town. I live in Eugene so I don't come out here as often as I'd like, but I refuse to eat Hawaiian food anywhere else. The tri tip is hands down my favorite but I've never tried anything there that I didn't enjoy. Extremely fast service too.

We just moved to the area and I've been wanting to try this place. We did today and it was awesome. Food was great service was good. We will be going back.

I was told this was a better Hawaiian style option for the Eugene Springfield area. I enjoyed the mac/potato salad mix better than the other places but I was greatly disappointed that they have items listed on the menu they do not actually offer. I am completely put off by the female owner one day belittling a new employee in front of myself and other patrons. She was so disgusted with his portion control she threw the carton of food he worked on across the small room into the trash before he could finish. I was actually offended she then tried to include me in the process of "training" her new employee by asking me about his incompetence. I like the food ok, it's a bit overpriced for what you're getting, but watching the manager treat her employee poorly and her mannerisms completely ruined my experience there. I might go back but only if I am asked to by other people and she is not there.

Came for lunch was my first time. The woman @ the counter was super nice considering they just got done being busy for lunch! I ordered and didnt have enouph to pay, the woman didnt even blink an eye she said no problem and gave me a fresh made cookie! That was the coolest thing any buisness owner could do instead of makein you look like an idiot cuz you miss counted lol. The food tasted very good! To the guy that oviously got fired from workin there and is pissed. I know very established chefs and extreemly talented cooks that smoke pot! And if you friggen look around bud the economy sucks every restaurant is giveing smaller portions or charging a higher price cuz where they get there meat the price has gone up also. If you dont like the kitchen go eat @ a nice sharis or I hop then you can get flavorless food cuz my bbq was soft flakey and full of yummy smoked flavor. Iv experianced some of the best food iv ever tasted in places like this! Try it when you travel youll find some wonderfull places! Dont eat pre bagged corp food! Love this place :) :)!

I ordered the Big Kahuna which included a sample of all the meats and sides. I'm not exactly sure how authentically "Hawaiian" the meal was, but it was tasty nonetheless! I just wished the meats were cooked for a slightly shorter period of time (or the meats were brined first) so they would have been a little more juicy. All the full meal options give you a giant portion of food, so you won't leave hungry. If you don't order the big kahuna, I recommend the tri-tip and the Kahlua pork. As for the sides, I recommend the pineapple fried rice and the potato salad. The noodles were kinda weird.

Love the tri-tip! The chicken is great on its own...the sauces kind of overpower the meat.

SO BUMMED. I really wanted this place to be my go-to Hawaiian place, since we live so close. Sorry, Kona... the food is absolutely terrible. Maybe it was because we got takeout late in the day? I ordered a meal with teriyaki tri-tip, mac/potato salad, and pan fried noodles. What I got was a heap of lukewarm meat (though it was juicy), some ancient almost-dried noodles (are they supposed to be crunchy? Because they were), and a scoop of macaroni-potato salad that tasted very "commercial", like they just took a carton each of store-bought potato and mac salad and dumped them together. The teriyaki sauce was extremely thick, overly sweet, and very salty (saltier than it should be), and glooped all over the place. It was overpowering, and likely from a bottle. The other plate had pineapple fried rice and teriyaki chicken. The rice was pretty good. I could taste enough "liquid smoke" to choke a horse, maybe from the chicken? I'm very disappointed, because it was all so... bad. The fact that the food was ready to go like 2 minutes after I ordered should have been an immediate red flag. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting for hours. I don't plan on returning.

Great food and a very fair price. This is my favorite place in Springfield. My favorite is the volcano chicken over the pineapple rice. Good is ready pretty quick and the place is very clean. Great atmosphere.

Pretty good food for taming the need for some Hawaiian flavor! It's not at all the same of course, but it was flavorful and does the trick for lunch! The pineapple rice is better than I thought it would be. Kahlua pork was tasty and great portions come to you. I tried one of their ribs too, and it was pretty good with a rub BBQ on it. All is all good Hawaiian fast food with fast service. Small joint, but many for their orders to go

So a co-worker suggested I go here for Hawaiian food and after trying other places I still haven't found the "it" spot for Hawaiian. So I thought I would give it a shot and I wish I hadn't. First the interior needs some serious redecorating and the interior just makes it unappealing to eat there. Another thing was that my order was made wrong. I got the bigger plate with 2 types of meat so I chose the kalua pork and volcano chicken. I got the Kalua pork, but got teryaki chicken instead, sort of disappointing. I was on my lunch and just wanted to eat and leave I like a little smokey flavor, but the kalua pork seemed as if was drowned in liquid smoke and could get the taste out of my mouth for quite awhile. The chicken was just okay, nothing to write home about. Then there was the mac salad. The worst I have tasted. The salad had a weird taste to it and just felt like it wasn't authentic. I have tasted better mac salad at other hawaiian places in town. I know the owner might reply and say her mac salad is authentic and that the food is great. I don't make it a point to purposely give restaurants a star, and only give if they deserve it. In the end I won't be returning or even recommend this place to close friends and family.

Fell in love the first time we ate there, the staff are super nice and the food is great! So tasty. Love the cookies too! Love this place!

I love their food. It is the best Hawaiian food in town. The only thing stopping it from 5 star is the atmosphere. It is low end interior with high end food.

Greatly disappointing! I have eaten there twice now, the first time was not so bad but was not overly exciting. Yesterday i went there to get a quick dinner, and i cannot tell you how upset i was that we even spend any money on that. I got the tri - tip with noodles and their salad. First and foremost everything was covered in sticky sauce, the bag, the container, the napkins, and of course my self and husband. The tri tip was the driest meat i have ever had in my LIFE!, It seemed as though it had been sitting all day long maybe even left over from the day before. HORRIBLE noodles, wow is all i have say. Those noodles were so old and disgusting i could not even eat the meal we paid for, we spent $21 dollars and neither of us took more than 4 bites of our meal. I will never go back there again and will never recommend that place to anyone. This is the first time i have even done a yelp review and i only did so because i felt compelled to do so. Greatly sorry if this is offensive to people but no one should be served that kind of food unknowingly.

I have been to Kona cafe many times. But the last few times have I have been so disappointed. The portion of food has gone down and for the price you pay. I can go to a lot nicer places. I wish they would get back to the quality and quantity they use to be!!

It's not THAT horrible. It is a lesser version of Hawaiian time and I do agree on the potmac, it's crap. I don't know anyone who has ever been sick from it so they aren't a total fail. I'd say that it's an "eat at your own risk" kind of place. It could be worse though, it's not fish tacos out of tgr trunk of some dudes car... That happens you know. In the states. Bottom line, not great but not the worst thing on the planet or even in the area.

Where do I start? Ordered the Big Kahuna, My takeout bag was covered in sauce and got it on my clothes. All of the meat was overly salty. The tri-tip tasted like it was from the day before and was dry. Rib was over the top fatty. Kahula pork had an abundance of smoke flavor, just too much like they added liquid smoke or something, my wife agreed and barely touched it and she loves kahula pork. It was also very fatty like the rib. Chicken was my favorite. However, a few of the pieces were hard and over cooked. the noodles were dry, the rice tasted old like it was sitting in a fridge and reheated. raw cabbage in the box was not good, is it for garnish? if so it got all over my other food and it was hard to scrape around. half mac half potato salad was ok at best, nothing special, tasted like reser's or something. I do not recommend going to Kona Café, Hawaiian Time is much better if your looking for cheap Hawaiian bbq..

It's hard to compare this place to Hawaiian time because it doesn't have that chain restaurant feel or taste. It's not the best but it's not bad either. I like the pulled pork and fried rice. The place needs new carpet and a remodel as well. I'll still continue to go here because it is a nice change from Hawaiian time.

Tastes OK, if you walk in, order, get your food, eat it, and leave... all with your eyes closed. Some the lowest ranking customer service I've ever received. The final time I ate there was the day I discovered a long, black hair in the potato-macaroni mixture. I proceeded to call in a moment of heated disgust to let the manager know to tell her employees to pull their hair back, but I was answered by the culprit who proceeded to tell me to come back and show her, and then they might replace it. Yummy.

Okay I really like this place, but I'm really disappointed in one employee, the one with short hair. First I ordered the big kahuna (I share it with my daughter) and she scoffed at me while rolling her eyes. To add to it she was fluffing or itching her hair while making my food???? I'm not a huge germaphobe but it disgusted me!! I hope they lose her soon because I really leave when I see her now.

I have been torn as to how to provide a grade for this place. I happen to be a fan of all things smoked, and this fits the bill. Can I say it's the best thing in town, well remember this is Springfield, pretty close actually. I do like the fact that when you order, you can ask and receive the meal as you wish. I typically get the Big Kahuna which has all of the meat choices, and I get it with the noodles instead of the rice. I like it better. Typical wait time is very short as the food is pretty well ready to go when you are. Parking at this corner location can be quite challenging especially at lunch time as everyone is in and out in a hurry. There is a small dining area for those who wish to each here. The smoke flavoring and the food to me is pretty darn good, and for the price and timliness of the meal is about as good as it gets here in Springfield.

I have eaten here a half dozen times in the last three years. When I first went it was great. I met the owner and like me he was from Hawaii. He made my order and it had good portion of meat for the price. I had gotten the Kalua pork and the ribs. I was full and satisfied with what I paid for. I went back shortly after this first experience when the owner was not working and was disappointed. I ordered the same meal and did not get nearly the amount of food the first time. I told the employee working there that this seems much smaller than before. He told me that was the portion that comes with the meal. I also stated my concern for my ribs as I got the small end of the rack and it looked dry. He said that it was fine and they all looked that way. I left and ate my meal to go. The ribs were extremely dried out and not able to be eaten. Throughout my other visits back it has mostly been disappointing with the occasionally good meal. I just can't recommend this place since it is not consistent and the employees lack training. That is just too bad because when the owner is there cooking the food is the best Hawaiian in town next to making my own.

I first ate at Kona a year & a half to two years ago and greatly enjoyed my food, both in taste and quantity. I delayed writing my review after reading those of others. I have eaten at Kona 3-4 more times. I must say, I do like their food, I have no problem with the preparation (outdoor barbecue) and I like the salad, whether it is Reesers or their own recipe. My only complaint is, since the "economic downturn", it seems that their meat (I always opt for the pulled pork) portions are somewhat smaller and I don't remember them putting lettuce between the rice and meat on the plate until recently. I definitely prefer the quality and flavor of Kona's food over that of other local Hawaiian barbecue establishments. They seem to have a brisk take out business. The service is laid back., not rushed.

This place used to be great. I think that with the owners now, they don't know what they're doing. You can't dump salt on salt and sell it as a meal. I used to love this place! And the side now, instead of being homemade potato salad mixed with macaroni salad, it's just a mash of whatever they didn't sell the day before and it all tastes like Reesers. I can buy that at Walmart. Yuck! Stop thinking you're making money when all you're doing is turning people away.

Great food at great prices! We always get the keiki plates, which is more than enough food. We love the teriyaki chicken! It's s hit and miss with the employees. Sometimes they're great, other times they're on the rude side. We usually just do take out, and it's always quick service.

The teryaki chicken as really good, I wish I had opted for the pan fried noodles over the rice though. I stole a few from my boyfriends plate and they were really yummy. The interior was underwhelming, but I am here for the food, not the ambiance. I will definitely return.

Half and half plate volcano chicken n kalua pork over pineaple fried rice so good here. Love the smells of the smoker when eating here. Potatoe mac here so so good. Must try the ribs soon.
