Oh yes! We did the round table with greens, black eyed peas, fried chicken, catfish, fresh yams, coleslaw, buttermilk biscuits, hush puppies, Lima beans, squash, and a chocolate brandy pudding with walnuts. Everything was delish. Nap time!

Sunday's Fare Includes: 1 meat 3 vegetables 1 salad 1 desert Service & Facilities: Super fast & attentive service, meal came out hot, bathrooms were clean & the entire staff was friendly & helpful. Prompt frequent refills on the sweet tea. Salads: Food was brought out in courses. Salads out 1st - Cole Slaw & Shoepeg Corn Salad. Best part of the meal. Shoepeg was sho-nuff the stuff! Very tasty, I would liken it to potato salad w/out potato & a good peppery kick to it. Cole Slaw was a close second, although a little wet for my taste. Main Course: Before we had finished, we received our main dishes w/ 3 sides each. Both ordered the Fried Chicken. I had all white, hubby had mixed. Chicken was definitely good, but not award winning. Hubby & I both noticed there was a little sweet to it. Not off putting, just different. Both had candied yams - had better. Broccoli au gratin - tasty, but not great, cheese could have been thicker. Mustard greens - not horrible, but I would never order them twice. Potato casserole-just plain bad. Mini cornbread & dinner roles tasted store bought. Sweet tea less sweet than not & appreciated, since one can add sweetener to their liking. Dessert: Chocolate cake came out w/ Icecream & whipped cream. Was good, but nothing special. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture to show you since my husband scarfed it down like we were running from the law between his grumbling complaints that it was "clearly a brownie & not cake". Blueberry Cobbler was also nothing special & did not come w/ icecream. Chocolate Cake is served w/ Icecream, but not berry cobbler? It's like I'm in an alternate universe. However, I asked the waitress to bring me some & there was no additional charge on our bill. Conclusion: I probably wouldn't return because the food was just ok for us (to each his/her own), but they definitely have the southern hospitality thing down, really authentically beautiful decor (my pics don't do it justice) & we left w/ full bellies. Feels like you are at a friend's house for Sunday fellowship after church. Casual attire is welcomed. For those reasons we felt a 3 star rating was still appropriate.

Another gem on our road trip A good place to experience Southern food and charm Super fried chicken

Cool vibe/atmosphere w/ location in 100+ year old historic home & live blues band (a bit LOUD, though). Service - very friendly & accommodating. Price - a little steep for what you get. Food - disguises & surprises. In other words, great style, but lacking substance. Really looked forward to gumbo, but it was almost cold and tasted bitter. My son's chicken strips had good batter texture, but no flavor. Gravy for dipping them in had greasy aftertaste. To-go desserts (chocolates pie & red velvet cake) were bland. No discounts offered for military or seniors.

Love the history and the food. Have stopped there many times on my drive from Texas to Georgia and back. The fried chicken, turnip greens, and rice and gravy are down home good!

Monday lunch is a tradition here. Get the round table. Some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Black eyed peas, okra, greens, rice,....all the fixings and all you care to eat. Friendly service.

My family stopped by this place during dinner hours. Earlier that day, we devoured 5 pounds of crawfish so we were looking for something light and dessert. I found this place on Yelp and looked though their web site and the desserts that they had looked pretty good. For the appetizers, we ordered: 1. Fried Green Tomato 2. Green Salad 3. Crab cakes For the desserts, we ordered: 1. Cheesecake on a stick dipped in chocolate 2. Key Lime Pie 3. Chocolate Cream Pie Everything we had was really good. I looked through their menu and I like that they serve good food in an unpretentious way. With so many self-proclaim foodies nowadays and restaurants that try to be as trendy as possible, I think this is a nice place for basic good cooking. Your belly will be full and you will be happy.

Great traditional Southern cooking, made well! The fried chicken and blackberry cobbler are terrific. Great service from the hospitable staff.

Fried Chicken was great, tasted like a touch of Tabasco was in the batter. Just right. Also had the fried catfish with fryed corn and purple hull peas. Excellent. The biscuits reminded me of my mother's, perfect. Wrapped it up with a piece of coconut creamed pie. A little heavy but very nice. All in All in very good meal and a touch of history. Recommend you try Walnut Hills.

Omg so delicious! We stopped here because it looked really interesting being in an old house. But it is so yummy! 100% recommended.

Well, here we are again in the lovely city of Vicksburg. A peaceful steady rain was falling and it was around sixty degrees so we decided to walk under the umbrella the five blocks from our B&B to Walnut Hill to give it a second visit. We were richly rewarded for the effort. Had the Corn and Crab chowder for starters. Amazing. If it's on the menu, get it. Especially if you just walked five miles barefoot through the snow like us to get here. It is superb. As we had already gained about thirty pounds in our week on the Gulf coast we decided another four or five pounds would not be an issue before we go on the Sonoma diet on Monday for the rest of our lives until our next vacation, so one of us got the fried oysters and the other the fried shrimp. Cooked to perfection. Onion rigs are great as are the cheese grits and black eyed peas. You just cannot go wrong here. Their fry cook deserves a Pulitzer Prize or something.

Nice drive from Jackson for a Sunday family lunch. The food was good, but the portions were extremely small and it was way overpriced. I think they assumed we were out of state tourists. We were offered two dining options - eating at one of the "round tables" family style for $25/person or a plate lunch for $16/person. Yep, sixteen dollars for a smallish plate lunch with just one piece of chicken, three small scoops of vegetables, tea, tiny biscuits and a laughable attempt at apple cobbler. We were NOT offered a children's menu for our 9 year old, even after inquiring about one. She had a piece of chicken and plain rice for sixteen dollars. Our family of three's bill with tip was 60 bucks and we left HUNGRY and very disappointed.

We had our retreat at the Vickburg military park and the restaurant was gracious enough to have us for lunch with short notice, over 20 of us! We ended up with the buffet style fried chicken and friend catfish option, and it was great for the price, just quality Southern cuisine. The tartar sauce was something special. The service was top notch and in a homely decor, as it is actually in a home. I would highly recommend this place if in Vickburg or just passing by.

My husband had memories of visiting Walnut Hills in his youth and we had to make a trip during a recent weekend trip! The pick chops were incredible as were the biscuits. The family style dining option was a fun spin on the traditional dining experience. Don't miss a chance to take in an afternoon rocking on the beautiful front porch.

So disappointed. I read the other Yelp reviews and had high expectations for this place. We went to the $16 Blueplate. First of all, salad, 3 sides, 1 meat, bread, and dessert. The sides come in condiment cups...... That might not even be a half of a cup serving. We never received bread, so I can't judge that. About 4 oz of porkchop was not enough! The peach cobbler tasted like it came out of a can. I have never been so disappointed in a Blueplate. It wasn't even worth $8.

Passing thru Vicksburg we stopped at Walnut Hills. What a wonderful decision! (We have decided to divert our yearly travel to Virginia thru Vicksburg to allow a lunch stop here; it's that good) The fried green tomatoes with crawfish was amazing, I had the fried chicken and my husband the catfish, both were perfectly done. Be sure to save room for dessert, the lemon cake and the caramel cake are to die for!

Monday night in Vicksburg / limited options. We had just spent 5 nights enjoying great food at Jazzfest in New Orleans and wanted a fine Mississippi meal in Vicksburg after touring the battlefield before heading back to New York. Walnut Hills did NOT disappoint. Our server suggested a nice pinot noir to start; a solid suggestion. Fried green tomatoes appetizer with crawfish tails and remoulade sauce with Louisisana hot sauce "on the side" as we requested were shared (4 tomato slices in all). Delicious!. Fried Chicken was indeed "world famous", along with mashed potatoes and (very good) asparagus. Husband picked the bones clean.... My entree was fresh green salad with 2 warm crabcakes. Very tasty. No room for dessert, but bakery selections looked very enticing. Thanks, fellow yelpers, for directing us to another fine meal!

Where to start, there is so much that needs to be said. First of all let me tell you what we got and then I will break it down. We started with the "crab cakes" appetizer. I must say, I have had many in my time, some from very high end restaurants. These crab cakes were (dare I say) perfect. They were moist and filled with crab and absolutely the perfect temperature. (Call me Goldie locks, but I like to be able to eat my food right when it comes). Often times crab cakes are hot on the outside and warm on the inside. These were thin enough to be consistently heated. My husband (the spicy lover) said there was a kick, I didn't get that, but the sauce did have a kick and I could have drank what was left had there been any. Moving on to the "world famous fried chicken". OK first of all I love some good fried chicken. There is nothing like a piece fresh fried chicken right out of the fryer. I would be lying to you if I told you this was the best I've ever had. Don't get me wrong it was delicious, but nothing stood out about it. The seasoning was not present in the dredge and it was simply standard fried chicken. My personal opinion is that you would be doing yourself a disservice by ordering the fried chicken because the flavor a in everything else was outstanding but "to each his own". You get two side with an entree so we got the "fried corn" and the "grits". The fried corn was some serious comfort food that I could eat every day of my life. Now to be fair, I have never had fried corn and j have nothing to compare it to, but the seasoning and the creamy taste was insanely superb. The grits had a very slight cheesy taste and although good lacked simple seasoning. Once I added a little salt and pepper we were Golden!! The waiter forgot our salad so I can't tell you about that. We got the special which was "pork loin served with sweet potato and spinach" this dish looked 5 star. We laughed when it came because it looked so over the top (see photo). It was several thin cut pieces of pork loin covered in pecans and cranberries. It was a little too sweet for me to eat an entire meal of it so I'm glad me and hubby swapped plates half way through. The sweet potato was soft and moist and the spinach was good. The sauce seemed to be like a maple syrup type base thus the sweet. Now for dessert. We were told that they had the best coconut cream pie we would ever eat. Pffft, I'll be the judge of that. We got it to go because we were stuffed to max capacity. Although I'm not sure how it could be better chilled it probably is. We ate it almost 4 hours later and let me just say. It is the BEST piece of CCP I have ever had. It's actually called "cream of coconut" pie so there may be something special that gives it the variation, but all you need to know is GET THE PIE!!! I hate pie crust and this was amazing. I could probably not have eaten the whole thing alone, so thankful for my hubby. The small five table room we were in had 3 different waiters and that sort if bugged me. They seemed to be running and that rushed atmosphere sorta ruined my relaxation mode. But overall we would definitely come back.

We made a little stop here for the lunch on the recommendation of a friend and really enjoyed our time. It was the late end of lunch, so they were out of a few items that we ordered and food came out slow. The server was gracious when handling the complication, and he showed pose when another guest in our dining room was upset. He did a a great job making it right. Fried chicken was awesome and I was very happy with my shrimp summer salad. We would very much recommend the cheese and sausage appetizer as it is made in-house. The desserts looked amazing and had a a great story, but we were traveling and too full from a great lunch!

Without a doubt, Walnut Hills was the best meal I've ever had in Vicksburg. Maybe one of the best meals I've had in. my. life. It's in a lovey home and the atmosphere is perfect. I ordered a Bloody Mary that was burn your lips off spicy and I loved it. For my entree I chose two appetizers...the crab cakes which were great and the fried green tomatoes topped with a spicy sauce that was loaded with crawfish. I know that some people don't like made-up words but that fried green tomato app was amazeballs. And by amazeballs I mean they were as amazing as balls. :) It was rich and delicious and there was a ton of it, especially considering it was an appetizer. I couldn't even finish the whole thing. Man oh man was it good. Our waiter was a little bit strange, but that definitely would not keep me from coming here again. If you're on the fence about which place you choose to eat dinner while in Vicksburg, choose Walnut Hills. It's amazing.

Wonderful traditional Southern food perfectly cooked. The catfish was crisp but not greasy and my husband's fried chicken was moist. The veggies ( we had crowder peas, fried corn, slaw and smothered squash ) were great. We went for lunch ; it was busy but not crowded and we were seated immediately. Service was excellent. A meat and two with bread and tea was 10.00. We shared a slice of freshly made Hummingbird cake (8.00) which was HUGE and could easily have served 3. It was to die for. Casual dress is fine at this old historic home.

Decided to give this a try on our last night in town. With all the positive reviews I was prepared for outstanding southern comfort food. We arrived on a Friday afternoon before 5pm - only one other group was in the restaurant. Seated promptly but it took 10-15 minutes before a server acknowledged us. There seemed to be a disagreement between two servers over who was to wait on us. Finally Kenny waited on our table. He was an excellent attentive server. I give him 2 thumbs up. To the food: Appetizer - fried green tomatoes with a crawfish sauce. I wish I hadn't ordered the sauce - it drowns out the flavor of the tomatoes. Main course: I ordered fried oysters with mashed sweet potatoes and purple hull peas. I am an oyster freak and order whenever I see them on a menu. This is one time I wished I hadn't. While not bad they weren't anything special. Certainly not what I was anticipating. The peas were delicious but I was very disappointed in the sweet potatoes. They tasted more like a pumpkin pie - they screamed 'too much ginger'. If you're used to your sweet potatoes being sweet don't order. My parents both ordered steaks. My Mom raved about her filet mignon being tender and cooked perfectly. Dad loved his ribeye and his sides of asparagus and broccoli. He found both seasoned deliciously. All in all it wasn't bad but wasn't great. Next time I'm in town I'll try something else though.

Beautiful southern home. After waiting for our waiter to finish his smoke break he came to the table and said are you ready? The smoke smell on his clothes was overwhelming. The fried corn was canned cream style corn with sugar added. The purple hulled peas were canned with no seasoning at all. To call this southern quisin is a sin!! Then back of the menu lists the chefs of the restaurant. I would not want my name listed anywhere near this establishment. We will not be back!

We went there today for an early dinner at 5 p.m. Friday August 14, 2015. While the service was very good the value for the dollar was very low. We had an oyster poor boy ($11) and an oyster dinner ($17). The poor boy had more oysters than the dinner. They must have cut the oysters in half before they cooked them. They were about the size of a quarter. The server was very good and the old house was very nice. The girls that seated the customers need to learn to at least appear to enjoy their job. Maybe the steaks are better but the seafood was a downer.

1 star for service as I sit here 50min from sitting down for lunch. The fried pickle app came out after 30 min. Looks 1/4 full of patrons so it isn't overly busy. Fried pickles were good but it's SO SLOW. Server was nice and apologetic, she knew it was taking too long. If you have a couple of hours to burn for lunch, go. Otherwise skip it and wait 30 min for a lunch table at Rusty's. 1 star for food due to wait. Taste was really 4 stars and waitress gave us a free dessert for the wait. I just can't give them more stars with wait.

Food was wonderful! We had the fried green tomatoes with the crawfish sauce. The fried chicken was so yummy. It includes three pieces of chicken, two breast and one wing. I am glad I shared with my friend. Kenny was an attentive amazing server.

Looks like a house. Walked in and some good ole Mississippi Blues players were going at it. Ordered some fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and onion rings as Appetizers. Main course was BBQ baby back ribs with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Everything I are was incredible! Great atmosphere! Great service!

Delicious fried chicken, purple hull peas and fried corn. Worth the calories. Lovely old home and ambience was simply Southern. Coconut cream pie and caramel cake are quite scrumptious.

We stopped here on our way driving from GA to TX and it was a nice place to eat. The lunch special is a great deal ($10 for an entree two sides and tea). I had fried chicken with collards and creamed corn. They were all good and I would go back if I were in town. Nothing was AMAZING although the fried chicken came close with its extra crispy crust. The cornbread they gave us was dry and not very good. My mom asked for biscuits instead and the waiter, who was kind of rude and seemed like he didn't want to serve us, told us it was because it was 3 and they change the menu. Our other waiter was really polite though so i guess it evens out. It's dressed up to look like a plantation home and the building and decor are nice.

5 on food, 3 on service. Im so glad we tried this place! (Thank you for the recommendations, Yelpers). Excellent food. There is a daily special where you choose the meat, 2 veggies, and get iced tea for $10. I got the sausage, red beans and rice, and cole slaw. I grew up with red beans & rice, but ive never had it so flavorful. The service got real rusty towards the end though, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. The waiter wouldn't even look our way... We had never been here before, so we waited almost 10 minutes for them to pick up our check until we got up to go to the front. They should have told us!

Used Yelp to find this place on a road trip with family. It's a bit off the highway but worth the scenic 1.5 mile drive. Great lunch special and amazingly quick service. Sweet and friendly staff and patrons! All the desserts were divine and catfish was a must have at our table.

Great little place to eat in Vicksburg! The chicken piccata over angel hair pasta was amazing, as well as the sautéed veggies and green beans! Very friendly staff!

Went there for lunch this past week and was NOT disappointed! I had seen them on a blog about the top 10 places to eat in Mississippi. I had the fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, and smothered squash. Everyone at the table got a different side and there was nothing but compliments :). We also had the pimento cheese appetizer and it was some of the best we had tried. Ended with dessert. Homemade caramel cake which somehow they had managed to have barely warm inside of the Coe while the outside was cool. The only problem is that they aren't closer!

  • Tom H.

overpriced, overcooked southern fried chicken, gooey, gummy desserts. I was excited to dine here because of the reviews and I love southern fried chicken. What I got for $18 was chicken that was so overcooked it was inedible. dry, stringy and disappointing. the waitress apologized showed the manager who agreed with me but didn't take it off the bill. Gave me a free desert, which I accepted. it was coconut pie that was so rich and dense it was like eating cream cheese from a package. I prefer a pudding like coconut pie filling, along the lines of a good lemon pie. So, be forewarned, it is expensive ($18 for 3 pieces of chicken that KFC charges $5) and management doesn't stand behind the food. BTW, the table next to us heard me complain and also complained, but got nothing in the way of an apology or discount. Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere.

The food was very delicious!! From the Po boy to the fried chicken and the red fish!! Highly recommend to anyone who has to do a stop off here in Town. Best food stop by far off the highway glad we saw the sigh!!

On our roadtrip, we stopped here; it was the midway point between Dallas and Atlanta. The town is adorable and historical, and this restaurant was no exception. It helped that the people sitting next to us at the round table looked like the KFC colonel family. The gumbo, which they claim is award winning, really was fantastic. The service was exceptional. I loved their location, in a quaint, historical house that still had plenty of parking. The food was excellent, and if we had stayed the night with more people, it would have been great to do the round table dinner. They had lots of gluten free options (albeit not labeled).

    (5)
  • P B.

Excellent food and service. If you have a group, the round table is a great option. $22 per person and the chef selects a few entrees and a lot of side dishes, all of which are put on a big lazy susan. Everything served when my group went was fresh and delicious. Great place to eat, too -- lots of character in the dining room.

Stopped in to Walnut Hills in March on the recommendation of a friend as I was in Vicksburg for business and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The Pecan Ale was fantastic as was the sweet tea. For dinner I ordered the Catfish Po' Boy and onion rings, both were delicious. I was stuffed but decided to take a slice of Coconut Cream Pie to go and it was heavenly. The dessert definitely set the bar for what a coconut pie should taste like.

I was born and raised in Vicksburg until I went off to college. Every time I return for a visit I have to eat here. The food is amazing but the service and atmosphere are just as amazing as well. A definite if you want to experience southern cooking and hospitality at it's finest.

I'm in a fried chicken coma, as I write this. Truly, as good as it gets! No offense to my 94 year-old grandmother, or the late colonel, but this fried chicken is the best I've ever eaten! The mashed potatoes & asparagus were top-notch, as well. If you're looking for unparalleled, southern home-style cooking in a cozy, historic home, with traditional southern hospitality, Walnut Creek won't let down.

  • Jim J.

My test for a great southern cuisine restaurant is whether they can make good iced tea. Details are important and tea is an easily overlooked detail. The tea was excellent fresh brewed. All of the food was wonderful. Thanks for a great experience.

  • Amber R.

Hubby and I stopped in on a whim, and I'm very glad we did. The fried green tomatoes with the sauce were the tastiest EVER! We were eating the sauce off the plate with a muffin, no shame...we tried the fried chicken and seafood platter, delicious. The second best part of the meal: GREEN BEANS! Trust me, you'll want more. I can't wait to come back. Waiter was super attentive, never an empty glass, and he also recommend half of what we ordered.

When husband said he wanted to go to Walnut Hills I was not happy. Never heard of it. We pulled into a neighborhood of adorable houses and I was smitten. Come to find out (on yelp) that it is round table style-which we love. We went in and had the most delicious meal-fried chicken (I could smell it from the parking lot) candied yams, corn puddin', and I chose mustard greens. For the salad I chose tomato aspic and for dessert Lemon Yum Yum. Everything was outstanding including the iced tea. The staff was totally polite and attentive. I say don't miss it if you are in the area.

Beautiful restaurant. Intimate with wood floors, tables, and chairs inside a beautiful old home which was converted into a restaurant without losing its homeliness. The staff was very courteous - I love southern hospitality! Chicken Gumbo appetizer ($6) was rich in flavor. Ordered their famous fried chicken which comes with 2 sides. They said they were out of Mac and cheese and squash. So, I ordered the green beans and white rice with gravy. Both are very good. I wish Chinese restaurants would make rice taste like this! However, I exited I-20 to try the fried chicken. And it's pretty hot and juicy. I can't say that I would stop by again just for the chicken, but I definitely would for the meal as a whole. Everything was good - especially the sweet tea! Not much of a dessert eater, but everything else was good so I decided to indulge on the German chocolate cake that is made from scratch. It's very light and fluffy... and huge! It wasn't as rich and moist as I thought it might be, but that might of been a good thing. A different taste than expected for sure: light, subtle richness, fluffy, endearing. Definitely to be shared with a loved one... like this restaurant.

Really great fried catfish and the coconut cream pie...O.M.G.!!!! How they stuffed that much coconut in one piece I have no idea. My dinner mates also had the stuffed chicken and the fried chicken, which were both great. Not really a fan of the grits or the Mac and cheese as sides but the asparagus and green beans were legit. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a great Vicksburg experience.

First time here but will definitely be going back. Went to Walnut Hills with a couple of fellow Americorps members and loved it! They had some terrific live blues and I had a really great meal. I highly recommend the shrimp poboy and a slice of their key lime pie for dessert. Can't say enough wonderful things about my experience here!

  • Cynthia K.

Wonderful service, Casual setting in an old house. They had live blues on the Fri night we went - fun, but loud in the room the band is in. Delicious fried chicken, crispy, slightly spicy, juicy inside. I had mine with sauted spinach - very good and mashed sweet potatoes - yum. Really good bread accompanying the meal. I would dine here again if I ever get to Vicksburg again.

True Story. I'm driving in Vicksburg, it's pouring and gloomy outside and I'm cursing that every place I want to go is closed on Mondays. I'm also getting more and more lost as I make wrong turn after wrong turn. Suddenly, on my left is a sign for Walnut Hills. I had heard good things about this restaurant but thought it was too fancy for a quick dinner by myself. But I believe in culinary fate, and so I turned my car into its parking lot and headed inside. It's set in a beautiful historic home. My server was extremely kind and attentive. I ordered the fried chicken because apparently it is very famous. OH MY GOODNESS. Flaky, crispy, succulent skin. Just perfect. I also ordered the asparagus and side salad which were both very good, but nothing compared to the chicken. I felt completely zen in the dining room with the green, bright trees outside the window and the hushed atmosphere in the dining room. I said I was full but on the way out I ordered a piece of the caramel cake to go. It was HEAVEN. I had to control myself from eating it in the car on the way home. Let fate guide you to your culinary destinies.

Amazing place to eat! Unique place-Southern Food! We stop here on our way to FL from TX. There's not much round and we didn't want fast food- so I read the reviews on yelp and took a chance! Sooooo glad we did! It's a neat southern home made into a restaurant. Our party was large enough to have its own huge table in a side room- so it was quiet and private. We ordered so much food: Individual scores below- (1-5) Appetizers: Crab cakes- very yummy with a fantastic sauce! 4 Fried pickles- these are hand battered and served with ranch dip- fab! 5+ Entrees: Redfish Almondine HUGE portion served with salad, bread, baked potato. He loved it! 5 Fried chicken (they ask you white or dark-I got white) and I chose 3 vegetables of many- purple hull peas, green beans (very buttery flavor) & fried corn (like a corn casserole mix)- all were yummy! The fried chicken is really the best ever! The leanest white meat ever, fried with a light golden brown crust. If you're from the south like I am, it's your momma's home made fried chicken! 5+ Boiled shrimp platter (served hot or cold- he got hot) great portion and served with bread, salad, and he got the batter fries- a uniquely light crunchy battered fry! 2 (took too long to peel) Lasagna special- choice of veggies- pretty good 2.5 Fried shrimp dinner-(husband) served with salad, fries- really big shrimp, he said it took 2 bites for him to eat each shrimp and they were very fresh. The batter was very light, he would prefer it a little thicker with corn meal. 3 Fried catfish (child plate) huge piece and very fresh, great batter, not fishy tasting, crunchy- I wished I'd gotten it as a dinner plate! My daughter loved it! 5 Fried chicken (child plate) with fries- 2 chicken legs- they all loved them! 5 Dessert: Pecan pie with ice cream- 2 ordered it and they said 10!!!! Chocolate pie with ice cream- he said "best pie I've ever had" 10- LOL Price: $200 gratuity included Bottom line: order the fried pickles if that's a favorite of yours, get the special- FRIED CHICKEN or fried catfish with the peas, green beans - and dessert!

First time in Vicksburg and not sure where to eat. The service was not as stellar as I expected from the looks of the place but the food was fantastic. I would definitely eat here again.

Bummer! I was so excited after seeing all the positive yelp reviews. I love finding new spots when I travel for work - well, this place was a HUGE disappointment. I walked in and the hostess was not friendly. I was placing a to go order, and she made me feel like a burden. You know, people have bad days...so I let it go. I ordered the fried chicken, mustard greens and mashed potatoes. The chicken was good. The mustard greens were terrible. The corn bread/biscuits that came with the meal were ROCK HARD. I'll chalk it up to being a Monday evening and a to go order, but I was super disappointed. There was, however, a very friendly and courteous busboy who brought me my to go order. He had a quiet manner about him, but could tell he wanted to serve. Hopefully your experience is better than mine. Dine in!

The setting was beautiful. We drove down the street to the murals then up to the Walnut Hill. From the historic neighborhood to the beautiful wood furnishings it was wonderful. When we arrived they seemed a little overwhelmed. The hostess did not greet us. She walked around in a circle then walked away. Then she stuck her head around a corner and told us to follow her. We were sat. It was packed and our waitress was way over seated. She had our drinks to us right away. Then it was about a 20 min wait to order. Bye the time we received our food we were about the only ones in the place. Food: Fried Green Tomatoes with crawfish sauce was Awesome! We ordered the Fried Chicken dinner Awesome! Fried catfish! Awesome! The only issue was our batter fries were old and cold. I think this place would be a 4 star normally we just caught them at a bad time.

Can't review a place that's closed on Tuesdays. This information would have been nice if it was listed in the hours. Looks like a cute quaint local place to eat.

Server: Charles. Great service. Prompt. Attentive. Courteous. I chose Fried chicken, squash casserole, candied yam, green beans with peach cobbler. Great food. Great service!! Highly recommend.

Absolutely outstanding. The fried chicken is moist and crispy. Sauteed kale is a nice side when you need some greens. Housemade FGT are sublime, topped with fresh crayfish and remoulade. Their sweet tea is cold and refreshing, perfect with the authentic Southern food. The dinner service was really good, too - our waiter was attentive but not over-bearing.

Stopped over in Vicksburg on way back from FL beach vacation (with wife and 2 kids (6,8)). Great atmosphere and great food - they'll do just sides, if anyone prefers (a la Black Eyed Pea, et al), but their entrees are great too, and those get choice of those yummy sides. Live blues in the bar area, as well as the cool old home/venue, made for great southern atmosphere on the Saturday night we visited.

Very nice casual restaurant. Good atmosphere in an old Southern home. Three out of four of my party had the 14oz ribeye, and all three cooked differently. I ordered a rare an it was more medium rare than rare. I overlooked that due to being able to cut my steak with a fork. The other people in my party had no complaints. Also we ordered a 14oz., but we agreed it was more like a 20oz. Very good marbling and full of flavor. I would also recommend the grits as a side. The grits were cheesy and full of steak juices since the steak came out sitting on top of the grits. The waitress was very nice ad knowledgeable about the menu. Overall I will definitely eat here next time I am in Vicksburg.

Amazing! We were on our way back home from TN to Houston, TX, and wanted to find a good local family restaurant for lunch. Walnut Hills exceeded our expectations by far! Some of the best fried chicken I have EVER had. The vegetables are superbly seasoned, and the lemon cake is a winner!!! Will definitely stop again on our route from TN to Houston again. That was real southern food at its absolute BEST. A gem on the bluffs of downtown Vicksburg...

Best service ever. However with all the reviews this place has gotten so far you would think this place was the be all end all of southern cooking. We tried a bit of everything half was excellent and the other half good. On a scale of 1-10 Fried chicken 9 Black eyed peas 7 Turnips 9 Carrots 6 Green Beans 6 Scalloped Potatoes 7 point off for being undercooked Shrimp and Grits 7 more cream than shrimp or grits.

We read a few poor reviews on Yelp but went anway....almost TWO FULL HOURS from order time to eating time. Our waitstaff was friendly and got the wine, drinks and appetizers there quickly. Once we got to the painful point of waiting on the entrees, they brought us some yummy bread and apologized for the back up in the kitchen, and offered us complimentary desserts. Maybe something was wrong with the fried chicken, specifically, because mine wasn't as good as others seem to have noted. I'd recommend the fried pickles, but not the pimento cheese fritters. The atmosphere was lovely.

We were driving through and saw this listed on yelp so thought we would eat local. Everyone was very friendly. The Oysters were HUGE! Had a cup of seafood gumbo that was excellent as well. Followed up with the crawfish cakes. Everything was homemade and terrific! The meal did take a while and we were in a bit of a hurry but that was more on us than them.....

The absolute best Southern cooking I've ever had. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes to die for. The chicken isn't overly breaded and the meat is exceptionally juicy. The collard greens the best and the fried pickles the best I've ever had. Again not too much batter just perfect. For anyone going through or staying in Vicksburg this is an amazing treat, As a matter of fact we went through for lunch and coming back a few days later we rushed to make it to dinner at Walnut Hills. The exceptional southern hospitality and adorable house made this the perfect place and not to forget the prices were also excellent.

I simply don't have the time to write just how horrible our experience was today. Let me just say that I have traveled the world and enjoy fine food and wine; what we experienced today was nothing short of shocking. The service was rude and abrupt; the food was like that of my school dinners back in the 80's and the prices was borderline criminal. You know it's bad when the teller would neither look me in the eye when I was paying or ask me anything about our meal. We ventured here simply because of the reviews and historic reputation. We left disgusted and with a stern sense of disappointment. Read and heed! I'm only giving one star because I liked the building.

I usually don't order fried chicken when i go to a sit down restaurant but after seeing the positive reviews i figured i would give it a chance and i am so glad i did. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, this fried chicken may have been the best i have ever eaten. I had the batter fries which were also delicious but the green beans which were just ok. The rolls were a joke. Really inferior when compared to everything else. The service was outstanding and i liked the ambiance. We really enjoyed this place and if we're even in Vicksburg again, we will sure to hit up this place once again.

In a word...awesome! The food, the staff and the atmosphere were wonderful. The restaurant is in a beautiful old house and we were seated in our own room since we had a party of 8. You can choose 'round table' dining which allows you to sample everything from a lazy Susan in the center of the table or order from the menu. Our table tried fried chicken, club sandwich, smoked sausage, fried fish, and boiled shrimp from the menu. All were wonderful. I had chicken, purple hull peas, candied carrots & smothered squash (I know I'm making you hungry). :) The staff was attentive and friendly. They brought us two pitchers of tea to the table and kept refilling them so we never ran out. Kudos to the staff at Walnut Hill. They made this visit one of the best dining experiences we've ever had.

This is classic southern cooking with a little modern touch. I can imagine this place is packed at normal hours so we went during off hours. A nice quite antique setting in a historic location. Sit on the front porch swing after you eat or while you wait. I had fried chicken with onion rings and it was very good. The fried chicken was just like my mother and grandmother made it which means it isn't like KFC. More meat, less crust. A very light fried chicken. My wife had the fried shrimp with a vegetable mix and salad. The shrimp was very fresh and lightly fried. The vegetables were fresh, the salad wasn't anything special. We also had their chocolate pie and it was great! Very chocolate pie, not like chocolate pudding pie. I don't think you could go wrong here. Definitely get the chocolate pie!

Cool historic building. Disappointing restaurant. Incredibly slow and inattentive service. "The chef is gone and the new guy in the kitchen doesn't know how to cook the menu" from our server ... ouch. Food was marginal at best. Would never choose this one again.

My gf and I stopped by here for dinner on our roadtrip to New Orleans. We ordered the fried chicken (which they are famed for) and a Catfish Po Boy. The skin on the fried chicken was just about PERFECT, although the meat itself could have used some more flavor. The Catfish Po Boy was absolutely delicious though, and I was so full at the end that I had no room for dessert. Although this Restaurant is slightly expensive, I think it was money well spent.

One of my favorite places in this Country. I dropped by this restaurant on a road trip across the country. I ate at the best restaurants in every city where I stayed. And this restaurant stands out. It was just such a pleasant surprise. A beautiful setting in the what is a converted house. Each room is now a dining room. Such friendly and great Southern service - on a relatively empty night. I can describe it as "Comfortable." I had the Oysters - good. But...for a non-Southerner - this was the best Fried Chicken I've ever had. It consists of three white pieces - two large breasts and a wing. Seasoned to perfection. Served with some delicious bread and a sweet potato. This is what Fried Chicken truly is - and if you haven't had it here, it's not fried chicken. For dessert - one of the most incredible coconut cream pies I've ever tasted. Simply incredible.

Every once in a while I'll drift though old pictures and see a place I haven't thought of in ages, yet is indelible. Walnut Hills is such a place. A couple years ago, I was driving cross country, friggin' hungry, and my Lonely Planet guide led me to Walnut Hills. I didn't know anything about the restaurant, I had only these things in mind: 1. I'm in the Old South 2. I wanted me some Soul Food. 3. I want to eat somewhere GOOD. A former manpal and I stopped here. Granted, Lonely Planet guides have some personality, but you gotta go with your own gut--and how the food settles IN your gut. Oh, it was so much more than just a couple plates of food. From the Walnut Hills website: "Bricks made from the soil, hardwood from the hills, went into construction of homes such as this house, built in November, 1880 by George Rogers." It's a beautiful home with round-table style eating. You're seated at the table with strangers--people from all over the country, and some from right there in Vicksburg no doubt. In front of you are heaping platters of black beans, greens, corn, cornbread, catfish, fried chicken, and more. All of it on a lazy Susan. A Wheel of Fortune, if you will. Would you like a 2nd helpin', honey child? Oh, why sho nuff, help ya'self. Excuse me, I'm so sorry... I can't help it... The South just brings this spirit out in me! If you're looking for good... no, great... No... Mind blowing, can't-go-your-life-without-having-tried, orgasmic-tremor causing Soul Food, then you best get your britches to Walnut Hills and join everyone else at the table.

I used my new yelp app and found this wonderful restaurant . What a great find! The atmosphere was clean and classy, the staff was very friendly, and the cost was comparable to most decent eateries . The meal was very good. The shrimp was a light hand batter and the world famous southern fried chicken has a light, crisp. Flaky batter that melted in my mouth at every bite. I would highly recommend Walnut Hills as a fine place to dine.

Delicious fried green tomatoes, veggies and fried chicken! My husband enjoyed an oyster po-boy sandwich and said it was great. Service was friendly and fast. Loved that we got a pitcher of tea and water left on our table as the fried chicken left us thirsty! Would definitely go again on next pass through Vicksburg.

This old historic house serves up a traditional Sunday brunch as it should be. The service is friendly, the dining is communal, and you are eating in a true Old South kind of home. You get 2 options: round-table family style for $20 or a meat and 3, plus some, for $12.50. There was definitely a hustle and bustle atmosphere after good ol' Sunday worship service. As I was traveling and did not want a food coma, I ordered up a simple plate. I got just the right amount of everything. You get less meat than usual, but with a large plate of biscuits and cornbread, salad, 3 sides, and dessert, it sets you just right. The fried chicken plate comes with 1 big breast, and the brisket comes with 3 thin pieces. The fried chicken was crisp, and the brisket was moist and flavorful. The sweet potato was just a half, but it was moist and sweet, a bit too much for my liking. The coleslaw was fresh, and the broccoli salad was crisp and dang near perfect. The smothered squash had a touch of cheese and was surprisingly creamy. The green beans and mustard greens were not bad. The cornbread was crumbly and flavorful, and the biscuits were really tender. The Mississippi mud cake was very rich and a bit too sweet. The blueberry cobbler was stickier than most, but it was just the right amount of sweetness to tartness. The atmosphere really makes the meal here, as the grub is slightly expensive and not anything remarkable. Check this eatery out if you are in Vicksburg. You will not be disappointed.

A treasure. It's worth doing a search on eating places while on a road trip beause at times you can disover a place that creates positive memories and makes you want to recommend it. Waltnut Hills is one of a very few restaurants worth eating in in Vicksburg. $20 for ribs is definitely on the high side as were most of the prices for entrees. However, the ambiance is worth somethng extra, and the service is "genteel". My wife made a meal of side dishes because she wanted to try a variety of flavors. We would go back.

The old house/restaurant is truly a charming place. This place has real potential, if only it were under better management. For one thing, the service was terrible. It took a long time to get our food, and it was extremely difficult flagging down our waiter when we needed something. I went through my whole dinner without the beer that I ordered because my waiter never came around, or at least never got close and slowed-down enough to flag him down. At one point, I had to get up and go to the next table to ask if I can borrow their bottle of hot sauce because our waiter isn't around. I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on the wait staff. I could clearly see that they were running around in a complete frenzy, trying to keep up with the workload. I don't know if they simply had too many tables to keep up with, or if they lacked the training and experience to be as efficient and responsive as they need to be. Regardless, there was no management on the floor, visiting the various dining rooms and ensuring that customers are receiving at least a minimum level of service and attention, and are getting their food in a timely manner. The food itself was okay... but I've had better southern food. But perhaps this is the best it gets in Vicksburg, so that's why it's getting good reviews.

Found Walnut Hills on yelp. Every review was 4 or 5 stars so we gave it a shot. I have to say the food was really good but the service was rude and unfriendly. Our waiter did not explain anything and was just really cold. When we were leaving 2 women headed out the door in front of us and our waiter ran to the front door to watch them walk away. We had to say excuse me twice for him to get out of the way of the door so we could leave. I commented and said "man you really starring" This was a huge turn off.

While there is plenty of Soul Food in Vicksburg to be had, Walnut Hills absolutely takes the cake. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old home in Vicksburg built in the late 1800s. Hard wood floors creak as you are seated at either a round table, where you eat with fellow restaurant goers from a giant spinning dolly in the middle of the table, or to a private table where you order from a blue plate style menu. The wait staff are are kind, but in that Southern kind of "What do you want?" way. The food is always fresh, fast and mouth watering. I have always been in heaven every time I've eaten there. The smothered squash is one of my favorite dishes. I can only guess that it is smothered in pure love because every bite coaxes an exclamation from me. I try to bring anyone from out of town to lunch here because it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience in both atmosphere and cuisine. My only complaint is that they are not open on Saturdays! I'm used to places being open on Saturdays and closed on Sundays and I always try to go there on a Saturday.

While overall I rated this place 3 stars, the food was 5 stars easy. Great homemade southern cooking. The Fried pickles changed my life. The reason for the 3 stars is because the service wasn't very good and the waiter was down right unfriendly. 100% worth the crappy servers to experience the food.

This was a good restaurant. The food was cooked properly and the portions were satisfactory. The atmosphere is an older home, nicely renovated but still keeping its character - quaint. The service was excellent. I would recommend for couples, a small group of friends or a small business dinner.

Best true southern cooking in Mississippi. Glad we have it in Vicksburg. Best at lunch. Roundtable is the best "experience" here for groups but the blue plate is a can't miss option as well. If you are in town and need to grap lunch, this is your spot. 5 *

We had been driving all day and hadn't been able to find anything that was open past two o' clock. We searched on yelp and found this little place. When we got there it was a cute little house in a quiet neighborhood. We were a little surprised that they didn't have any sweetened ice tea, the wait was a little long, and their new chef wasn't serving rolls because he didn't like the ones the old chef had been serving. Other than that, the food was amazing!!!! If you visit, you have to get the fried corn. It is amazing. Don't let anyone talk you out of it. It is something you can't get many other places. They are known for their fried chicken which was also awesome. My wife and I got the baked sweet potato which came with brown sugar. This was also to die for. My daughter got the side of asparagus which she also liked. Overall, the experience was great, and the food was amazing. If we ever pass through Vicksburg again, we will definitely stop here.

As a native Californian, I knew that I was in for a real treat when I visited my boyfriend's family in Mississippi. I love fried chicken, sweet tea, and anything "Southern". We were in Vicksburg to check out the historical sites, and had chosen a tour of the Baer house (~5 min. walk away). We just stepped out of the car, hoped that lunch wouldn't take too long, and walked in. I don't think we were prepared at all for what happened next. If you're like me and you want something delicious that will totally bust any diet at a great price, go to Walnut Hills. And if you don't want to enjoy your food, go get a bland salad. Food - 5 We got the full meal special, the one that has several sides, ribs, chicken, and your choice of desserts. The sides included what I think were braised greens, corn smothered in butter and cream, stewed okra and tomatoes, and rice. Even though I love carbs, I couldn't even look at the plate of bread they put on the table. I got one serving of each side (plus thirds of the corn... because it was unlike anything I'd ever had before). Then I took a look at the fried chicken and got hungry again, because it looked amazing. It tasted just as good as it looked. The skin was crispy, the meat was tender, and it was cooked perfectly. The ribs also were fantastic. (Bring floss for after!) I was glad that they'd given us cloth napkins, because you really need to wipe your hands after eating the fried chicken and ribs. Mmmm. Then there was dessert. The red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting was so moist that it basically melted in my mouth. One thing I didn't like, though, was that there was no sweet tea. Just regular tea. I think this was the one time while I was in Mississippi that I didn't have sweet tea! Service - 5 The server said that it would take a while for the food to come if we ordered from the regular menu, but if we ordered one of the specials (1. All of the sides + fried chicken + ribs + your choice of dessert OR 2. Choose one main course + 2 sides, something like that) it would be fast. We said sure, let's do the full special. It came out in 5 minutes. Wow. We also were checked on a couple of times throughout the meal (do you need anything, more water, more tea). In my experience, service was great. Decor - 5 It looks like a nice house that's been converted into a restaurant. I personally like things like this, and the window treatments (white with a red pattern that looks like a 18th century painting) were cute. I loved it. If you're in Vicksburg for vacation, bring your family here!

Everything is said in these posts are all true! Everyone should go here at least once for the home, history, and really good food. *The food is a little too salty for my taste as I don't eat too much salt at home, so everything is salty for me when I go out. :)

Best fried chicken. Ever. You can't go wrong by eating here. You can only go wrong by being within a 50 mile radius and NOT going here. And the fried okra and corn are the best sides. Fried okra is little balls of southern goodness. Also, for the love of god, order the pecan flavored beer- apparently the only beer brewed with whole real pecans. It is local and splendid. The only bad thing about this place is that the food is good you won't stop eating until your plate is cleared and you stomach is so full you hurt. But unbuttoning your top bottom and leaning back in your chair with a slightly euphoric but also pained expression is well worth it. The prices are low but the food is so rich and filling you'll only want to indulge in the heaven that is Walnut Hills once in a while. But if your passing through, go and wear your big boy jeans and eat up. Save room for dessert- the pudding is divine.

We were passing through Vicksburg for the first time and got a reference to this place. Ordinarily we're not drawn to places which feature fried chicken as their specialty but the reference was excellent so we thought we'd give it a try. It was well worth it. The restaurant is located in an old house downtown which can make moving around a little tricky when it's crowded. And it was crowded when we arrived which is usually a good sign. After a short wait for which our waiter apologized we were led to a nice corner table. The waiter brought us water right away and explained that the blue plate special was the best deal and that we couldn't go wrong with the fried chicken. We ordered drinks. My wife ordered a mint julep which, according to her, was excellent. I had a locally brewed ale which was made with pecans which was also very good. We both tried the fried chicken on the blue plate special. I opted for white meat while my wife chose dark. Several of the sides were already sold out but the remaining selections all looked good so we ordered a variety. The chicken was the best we've ever had. The meat was moist and tender. The breading was crisp and flavorful. The sides were equally delicious. The dinner included delicious corn meal biscuits which were served piping hot and were as light as can be. We thought we might be a little disappointed when we were told that they had run out of peach cobbler for dessert but we tried their vanilla pudding and were pleasantly surprised at how creamy it tasted and not too sweet. The service was also excellent. Our waiter was informative and attentive and the bartender came over to ask how my wife liked her mint julep. This was when he told us that the slight delay in its delivery was due to his having to go out to pick some fresh mint in the backyard. All in all a terrific dining experience. If we ever get back to Vicksburg we will stop by here for dinner again.

This place is amazing. has been in business for 30 years and our waiter has been there for 12 years. It is full of history and a really cute old house. You are welcome to look around after dinner and they love you to talk about where you are from. They also love to tell you stories. The food is amazing, and so much of it. I had the chicken and dumplings and green, mashed potato, beets. The chicken and dumplings were the best I have ever had, the vegetables change daily but the mashed potato was to die for. My husband had the grilled red fish almondine and asparagus, it was delicious. We shared a small bowl of gumbo which was also delicious. The peach cobbler was so good. I would come here again and again and again

My family and I were driving through Vicksburg, and decided to drop by based on the reviews. The menu was limited, with fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, and chicken fried steak, as the blue plate selections. They were out of the chicken and dumplings, so my kids and I chose the CFS, and my wife got a bowl of gumbo and I got a cup. The CFS was small, about the size of my hand, and seemed to not be fresh. The mashed potatoes and gravy were very good. The gumbo was disappointing. The rue had great flavor, but for the price, the portions were very small, 5.95 for a cup and 8.95 for a bowl, and half of that was rice, and the chicken or seafood was scarce. Also the rolls were old and not fresh at all. One blue plate special, two kids blue plate specials, bowl and cup of gumbo, two beers and two sodas, for over $50, very overpriced IMO, and not great quality.

Casual southern ambiance and polite service. Huge round table with lazy suzan for larger families or groups. The fried chicken, like the previous review was melt-in-your-mouth good with a wonderful and light crispy skin. It easily ranked among the best fried chicken I've ever had. Catfish was also good... though I don't know that it left a lasting impression. If you stop by, be sure to try to Pecan beer as well... fantastic.

The best fried chicken is their claim to fame. You can find it listed in the book "1000 places to see before you die". I spotted a picture of Paula Deen and her husband taken on their visit. To finish off a perfect meal you really must try a slice of the best coconut creme pie on God's green earth. A small restaurant that seat maybe 45 people on a small residential street, you would probably not even notice it unless you were looking for it. Of course they have other homemade items on the menu along with a selection of traditional southern side dishes. Many of which were new to my PA pallet, but I went there in search of awesome southern fried chicken and wasn't going to be swayed from it. We were not disappointed. We were on our way to Texas for a family visit and stopped in for a second dose of fried chicken and coconut pie on our way back to PA. Service is great. You are treated like family Although we had only been there that one time, when we returned there on our way home a week later, we were greeted with a cheery "You're Back!!!" when we walked in the door. Next to meeting our brand new granddaughter in Texas, it was the highlight of our trip.

A beautiful old house built in the late 1800's that was trasformed into a restaurant. The food is a traditional meat and three vegetables with an additional choice of slaw and waldorf salad and another choice of cobbler or German chocolate cake. The guests to the right and left of us were locals and they were great company. My only negative was the waitress who rushed us and was not in the least helpful, but I would still go again.

On a three-day side trip to Vicksburg on a NOLA trip, we asked our B&B host for a recommendation for a "regional food" dinner. It was one of our favorite dining experiences of our entire trip. I am amazed to read some of the other comments about poor service and high cost. It was the bargain of an 8-day trip at under $38 for dinner for two, including 3 beers! Service (both mgr and waitperson) was delightful. It is in a charmingly-refurbished home in the historic section of town - we easily walked there and back from our B&B (also in an historic home). We had local brews, and the "blue plate special": the best southern-style fried chicken ever (we paid $1 extra each to have a half breast and a thigh each), piping-hot, crisp, moist and tender. With the special we each got 2 sides, a remarkable assortment of vegetable choices served in custard cups, plus cornbread. I got fried green tomatoes and sauteed corn, my husband eggplant and collard greens. I added coleslaw (which was excellent). We split a divine slice of key lime pie for dessert. All this for $37.62!!! I have paid more than this for an entree! This was not gourmet, nor trendy, nor upscale. But perfectly done. I always say the mark of a good cook is one's fried chicken, pie and potato salad, among others. We went to the local "upscale" place the next evening (which shall remain nameless) and had over-fancy mediocre food for $120. I wished I had returned to Walnut Hills instead to try another local delicacy. GO there!!

What a delightful place! We were driving around Washington St in Vicksburg looking for a place for dinner when we saw the reviews for Walnut Hills. We really wanted a "local" dining experience and we found it. The restaurant is located in a house in what looks like a residential neighborhood. We both had the "blue plate special" which consists of one meat (fried chicken, liver & onions or sausage), three vegetables (chosen from a list of eight) and banana pudding for dessert. We each had fried chicken (you get to choose whether you want white or dark meat) and I had the smothered squash, purple hull peas, and glazed carrots and my husband had the squash, carrots, and green beans. All was fresh, delicious (the squash was quite peppery and the carrots very sweet). I had never had banana pudding before but it was delicious too. And the price? $9 each!! Can't beat that unless you go for fast food, in which case, you miss the homey atmosphere and personable staff.
