We were in Vicksburg traveling through. We read many Yelp reviews about the Beechwood Restaurant and how wonderful the steaks were. The atmosphere at this restaurant is very "hole in the wall". Wood paneling and plain tables. At first glance we both agreed we would not have eaten here if not for the Yelp reviews! First we had the fried green tomato with hollandaise and lump crab meat. There were mixed reviews-many "Raves" about this appetizer. The price was $11.99, not too high for a classy restaurant, a little surprising for the restaurant we were at, however we decided to give it a go. For someone without a developed palate, you might find this a good combination. However, for those with a developed palate-it is very lackluster. The hollandaise is marginal and seemed to be added as an after thought, the lump crab was fine, together not a rewarding combination. We ate only a few bites. For dinner we ordered a ribeye and blackened grouper. The waiter brought my fish, only it was blackened catfish, I said "I ordered the blackened grouper." He said "Oh, the kitchen must have made a mistake, we have someone new back there, yours will be up in 5 minutes". He then stated the steak would be under the warming bulbs and he would bring both meals out together. We declined the kind gesture of letting the fresh off the grill steak sit under a warming bulb. So the waiter served up the ribeye-Which was WONDERFUL!!! Probably one of the best steaks ever. This absolutely is worth the trip- Hands down!!. My fish took a good 15+ minutes and my other party was done eating before my fish arrived. The blackened grouper was also very good!!! The waiter did have both the catfish and grouper on our bill, so I guess it wasn't someone new who had made the mistake. Our waiter did take the catfish off-service was slow-not great-The food more than makes up for this though. Overall: Atmosphere: 2/5 Food: 4.5/5-for the main dishes only Service: 3/5 Overall-Go for the steak and grouper. We will be stopping by the Beechwood again on our way back.

What a jewel in Vicksburg. We tried the Beechwood on a recent trip and were delighted with the outcome. Do not let appearances fool you, the outside was dated but the inside was nice. I had the redfish, and my wife had the barramundi and while very fresh, they were slightly over done, that is the reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, and enjoyed our own private tour of the restaurant and lounge. He is quite the character and entertainer. It is obviously a favorite of locals as well.

This is a hole in the wall dive of a restaurant but I have learned that some of the best meals I've ever had have been in those. On the evening we went here it was really busy and our waitress would disappear for long periods of time so the service wasn't all that great, but it could have just been an off night. She was a total sweetheart, so that was nice at least. The food was spectacular. I had the fried green tomatoes with lump crab meat and it was so good. It was cooked to perfection and I really enjoyed every last bite. My friend ordered a steak and nearly had an orgasm at the table. I had to sample it because of this and I gotta say, it was that good. Next time I go here you can bet I'll be getting a steak. ;) Oh, and if you're a Bloody Mary lover like myself, theirs is strong and delicious. Have one for me!

Dined at Beechwood on a weeknight while traveling from Atlanta to CA. No noticeable smoke odor. Pleasant staff. The jumbo shrimp was very good, as we sampled both broiled and blackened versions. A bit pricey for the ambiance and the size of sides/hot rolls. Saw other tables with very large plates of crawfish and oysters, both looked very good. Had to park in the alley, as there is limited parking. I'd give this place 3 1/2 stars.

Good restaurant, food's ok, no ambiance what so ever. They cater to the locals, and tolerate the tourist. We were greeted promptly but treated cooly. those around us seem to get terrific service, we couldn't even get our water glass refilled without flagging someone down. bottom line, wouldn't go again

This place doesn't look like much, but hell if they don't make a great steak. They grill them right in the front of the restaurant. I also had the steamed broccoli and it was great, covered with parmesan cheese and steamed to perfection, it didn't taste healthy (just the way I like it!). Service was spotty and we sent back the wine because it was corked but the steak was so good I'd definitely go back.

  • Wesley B.

Don't let the looks fool you the steaks are excellent. The cook even comes by to check and see if your steak is cooked to your satisfaction. I recommend if your in the area to check them out.

Very good food. Chargrilled steak and redfish were perfect. Craft beers. Excellent service. Cozy atmosphere. Since 1956. We were on a road trip and quite happy we stopped here. Excellent.

Fantastic steak! Oh my God! I can't even remember one better than the one I had at Beechwood. My partner had the crab cakes and said they were perfect. The service was attentive but not smothering. We finished with a cup of great coffee. Beechwood was the end of a perfect day.

We've been here twice now. The food here is spectacular. We really enjoyed our burgers and combo appetizer. The fried green tomatoes are overpriced for a simple appetizer ($11), so we've never tried them and can't speak for them. Plan on waiting a while for your food, but the wait is well worth it. This is some of the best angus I've had. I wish they gave bigger water glasses. They are very small and not much more than a few gulps. The service isn't bad, just slow. It seems like it's simply because they don't have enough help. For a large dining room, it looked as if they only had 2-3 waitresses, each trying to wait on 5-8 tables themselves. Definitely worth a try if you have some spare time. Vicksburg, Please assist me in "Bringing the internet" to this town by adding your own review as well as pictures of the menu. Thanks!

Beechwood is my favorite restaurant in the Vicksburg area. I definitely owe Yelper Craig T. a beer or two since he is the guy who recommended I give this place a try. My visit to Beechwood was not without its issues, but the quality of food and friendliness of the staff won me over. The first thing I noticed was the giant grill behind a plexiglass window. I wanted to stand and stare as the chef grilled those giant cuts of meat, but I figured they frowned upon such behavior. Hanging my head in sadness, I headed to the table. The waitress who greeted us was obviously a bit frazzled. She explained that they had not anticipated the large crowds that night, but she would make sure and take good care of us. Her sweet southern charm immediately won me over and I knew that no matter how long it took that this would be a good experience. The meal started with their version of a wedge salad. It was unlike any other I had tried especially since they combined shredded cheddar cheese and blue cheese dressing. It was actually a pretty good combo. Next up was the steak. Considering how busy they were, I was a little worried my steak would be overcooked. What I received was one of the best steaks I have ever had in my life. I realize that is a grand claim to make, but that thing was absolutely amazing. It came with a side of their signature aujus, but it was not needed. The steak was perfect. Service was somewhat lacking, but the food, and the experience, make this the best restaurant in all of Vicksburg. Note: Writing this review is making me want to plan another road trip to the area just to eat here again. It's that good.

The next time I am at Vicksburg, I will definitely be stopping by Beechwood again. I remember reading reviews that warned not to be turned off by the restaurant's outdoor appearance. While I was not repelled by it, I could see how some would be. It's not the fanciest-looking place in the world, but true gems hardly are. ;) Inside, it reminded me of good ol' diners of decades ago. Friendly service and INCREDIBLE MEAT. I ordered the patty melt and she ordered the Texas-fried steak. (Even though it's not truly Texas-fried because it had brown gravy instead of white. ;) ) The meals were delicious and the server put up with my endless questions about the local beers before I finally settled on one. Not to mention, the owner makes regular rounds from table to table, introducing himself and checking on the quality of the food. That's good service! Also, for dessert, the bread pudding is AMAZING.

I had to give this place an extra star for the southern experience, which is one of the most important reasons to go here. The owner is a kick. Loved the guy. Great conversationalist as was our waiter who gave us great service. I ordered mostly southern dishes since I don't live there anymore and liked all of it. The wife and daughter liked it, too. Yes, a little pricey but good portions and quality. Agreed that you cannot judge this place by the front façade. It is an old building that has been this business for a long time. It might be chosen by Hollywood as a good place to include in a movie. There is good spacing between tables, it isn't too tight. A bar is in the back and has lots of room and large screen TVs. There is also a decent sound system back there. It is popular enough if you go at peak times you may have to wait. When we asked a local where to eat in Vicksburg and about this place, she said "Everyone in Vicksburg eats at the Beechwood.". If I am back in Vicksburg I would go back here for sure. It is a great southern experience if that is what you are looking for.

My family stopped here for a good meal on the road. That is what we found. Hand cut steaks, jumbo gulf shrimp, wedge salads and bread pudding. A wonderful change from the fast burger and fries of a traditional road trip meal. The staff is friendly and helpful. A hometown gem. We will stop again on our next trip through Mississippi.

Steaks looked great. Seafood very fresh. Enjoyed fried shrimp and scollops. Bourbon pecan pie a nice finish. Good service. Nice selection of craft beers. Would have like to try the evening special seafood dish. Wednesday night fresh oysters on the half shell. Nice

I am only reviewing the lounge. It was old and fine. Could tell that many a person had been drinking there for many a years. The food did look good - particularly the steak quesadilla.

I love that you can have a great meal, then walk into the attached dive bar and have a great time. This is the best place to get a steak in Vicksburg, the staff is sweet. I enjoyed my multiple visits here, great place!

  • Joe C.

The outside appearance of the place is deceiving, but the steaks are amazing... The salads are a bit small and yes the potatoes are served uncut with packets of butter and Sour Cream, but they know how to fire a steak... I travel every week for work and this place has a steak that runs with some of the best steakhouses in the Country... Again, it is a dated atmosphere, but it is a steak lovers heaven.....

Don't be deterred by the shabby appearance, the Beechwood provides some good food. The steaks are always good, shrimp are excellent and the ranch dressing has a touch of cocaine in it.

we decided to try here when we were staying in town for the night. My husband picked it based on reviews....Yes, this place is old looking. It has a smell, too. The waiter was nice, but he was slow as molasses and we had to remind him a few times. The bread basket is something like what I saw in restaurants in the 80's: small basket with some crackers, butter cups, and what looked to be large croutons...The salad that comes with the meal is on a tiny plate with scraps of lettuce, 1 sliced tomato, and a few slices of onion. For my meals- I got the crab cakes and baked potato. The cakes were very good but he brought sweet potato fries instead of baked. So I reminded him and he came out with a potato on a plate. Not cut open, no butter, no sour cream as it was supposed to have. I had to stifle a laugh...So I asked him about the butter and sour cream. He went in the back and came out with sour cream squeezes!! So I used the butter cups in bread basket and the sour cream squeeze tube. My husband and I had a laugh. His steak was good, but nothing amazing. In all, our meals were expensive ($18 for mine and around the same for his) and not worth the price.

OK, this one takes a lot of ratings into consideration: 2 stars for all of the smoke, 3 stars for the good bar food and 5 stars for personality, history, regulars, and overall awesomeness. This is the local dive, so prepare yourself and know your surroundings. I stopped here on a whim (ahem, I was hungry) during my road trip from Atlanta to San Francisco. My Yelp! app told me that this was the only place worth visiting at 9pm on a Monday night in Vicksburg, MS. The Beechwood has been open for 50 years or something and it is a local favorite. Everyone was packed in for Monday Night Football, all cheery and entertained while drinking commercial American beers and chain-smoking American cigarettes. 'Merica! Haha.. Seriously, though, everyone was really nice. Yes, they all looked at me strangely when I walked in. Maybe my fancy watch or the Ferrari t-shirt gave it away. But I bravely said "Howdy" and announced myself as the weary traveler, so they all nodded and went back to their previous conversations. I sat at the bar and was treated very well by the bartenders. I met the drunk (I think drunk, but he could have just been REALLY REALLY southern) bar owner, and ordered a beer and some food. They had lots of beer specials and a Monday Night Football bar menu as well. I got their wedge salad and a 1/2 order of the boneless buffalo wings. Neither blew me away, but they were both good. Homemade dressings and sauces really make a difference, especially when you're in the middle of nowhere eating bar food. You know what the best part was? Any time someone bought a beer they were given a raffle ticket. Throughout the night, an employee would pull a number and give away something like a portable grill, sports tickets, some house cash, etc. That's a pretty cool thing to do to keep people drinking at your establishment. Kudos to you, drunk bar owner. I especially love the business card you gave me that said "CEO of the Professional Bullshitters League". I'm glad that you take work seriously and that you trained your daughter (the bartender) to feed you an endless supply of double Jack & Cokes. Awesome. If I ever drive through Vicksburg, Mississippi again I will definitely stop in.

The 16oz. ribeye was a good cut, and they cooked it to perfection. The staff was friendly. I travel a lot, and I'll probably be stopping here again.

I was in Vicksburg, MS, on a Sunday evening, and nearly everything Yelp-worthy was closed. I almost just ate some Lara bars and called it a night, but decided to go ahead and see what was up with this place, despite the lukewarm reviews. And boy was I glad I did. Not only was my grilled catfish amazingly moist and flavorful (and accompanied by fabulous home made potato chips with dipping sauces and perfect comfort-food steamed broccoli with butter and parmesan), but the owner was also making the rounds greeting everyone. He chatted with me the whole time my food was cooking, and wound up giving me a golden Abraham Lincoln dollar (because I'm from California - the reason behind this was slightly unclear, but I didn't question it). I also had the bourbon pecan pie, which was a HUGE portion, and tasty, although I prefer my pies with a higher nuts-to-goo ratio. The place has been around since 1957, and it has that unique, warmly functional, slightly dated ambiance (with historical paintings on the wall). I loved overhearing other customers' conversations -- they were generally either locals in with family, or couples passing through who had been there a decade before and were happy to be back. If I am ever in town again, I will also go back - and next time, I'll be getting a steak, which you can watch them cook by the window....

Had dinner here 2 years ago & everything was very good. This trip, however, things have changed. Had the crab cakes which were inedible. Brought this to the waitresses attention & her comment was "yeah, we get that a lot since we began making our own, they use to be frozen". I even commented that they actually "sucked" thinking we would be compensated for the poor meal to no avail. After bringing our bill to the table, she disappeared for a long time before returning for payment. She disappeared again so I began mentally reducing her tip after every 5 minutes. The tip dropped from a generous $15.00 to only $5.00. We did find out why she disappeared; my wife overheard her in the restroom talking on the phone to someone assumed to be her boyfriend or husband. On the bright side, however, the fried shrimp were excellent. Probably won't go back next time I'm in Vicksburg.

I'd have driven on by if I'd not seen the reviews here on Yelp. My husband's steak was melt-in-your-mouth perfect. My oysters and shrimp were delicious and NOT overcooked. Fried green tomatoes with crab were tasty and creamed spinach was wonderful. Family run, in business for 60 years...and I see why! We will stop here each time we travel through Vicksburg.

The place looks relatively small from the outside but is huge and has a lounge in the back where there must of been a ton of people because the parking lot was packed but the Dining room was relatively empty, so don't let that scare you away. I had the patty melt which was super cheesy, but not much meat to it, so a bit disappointing. It was more like having a grilled cheese with some beef. I subbed onion rings for fries and was in love. The o-rings were definitely homemade and perfectly done. Not greasy, and perfectly crisp. My only complaint is that I only got five of them, and could have definitely eaten twice as many. Fortunately it helped me save room for the bourbon pecan pie. It made the meal. The waitress warmed it up and it hit the spot. The only thing missing was a scoop of ice cream. There is a guy cooking up steaks right there in the dining room, which added a little to the atmosphere. I will definitely be back to try out one of those steaks!

I probably wouldn't have gone here if it weren't for the TA reviews. The place doesn't look like a 5 star restaurant, the parking isn't the easiest and the decor is dated. But once I was there, it was worth it. Great service, the catfish was excellent and the bar is fun. But the best part is the owner, Rocky. You won't leave before he comes to say hello. He greets everyone and he's a real character and a hell of a nice guy. Worth the stop.

Good food, good service. Try the fried green tomatoes. At $11.99, they were a bit pricey I thought when ordering, but after taking the first bite had to admit they were worth it. Toopped with hollandaise sauce and flaked crabplate, they were some pretty fancy fried green tomatoes! Since we were dining so near the Mississippi we wanted fried catfish (also available grilled) and we were not disappointed. One of the best-priced items on the menu-$11.99 (same as appetizer!). Came with choice of sides. The onion rings were huge and the french fries were crunchy and very good. Sorry this local spot, aka non-franchise eatery, did not have better ratings because when I yelped restaurants in Vicksburg, MS this one was pretty far down the list. Two other establishments higher on the list were closed on Sundays. We stopped at Beechwood only by accident. Glad we did. As for other reviewers saying they were inhospitable to outsiders, we did not find this to be the case at all.

Although the trademark dish Riblets is a hot favorite among regular Applebee's dwellers, the restaurant also serves some amazing burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and salads.

Healthy Food Options at Applebee's

When a restaurant serves ribs as their main dish, then you can assume the diet-friendliness of their menu. Well, Applebee's is no different. However, you can dig deeper into their menu and pick some good healthy food options for sure. You can try the salads, light sandwiches, appetizers to ensure you don't order heavy items, etc. If you are really diet conscious, then you got to be careful with their steaks & ribs as well as desserts section.
