The Suburban is great! The food has almost always come out quickly, and it's always fresh and you can tell they use high-quality ingredients. They focus on using local food and drink, and they have fresh beef so they don't even have a freezer. I feel like that even though it's moderately expensive, they are very worthwhile. I wish I could afford to go there more!

House made black bean patties. Upbeat vibe with modern music. Definitely one of my favorite places in Excelsior.

Went at lunch on a Monday, place pretty dead. Server very friendly. Burgers big , tasty but nothing to write home about. The pizza was ugg....a very raw tasting tomato sauce that spoiled the pie, needed more cheese, too. Oddly enough, the best thing was their desserts. The tiramisu, house made, is the best in the Cities. The salted caramel brownie sundae (featuring Sebastian Joe's ice cream) was a-okay too. The happy hour drink prices were excellent for Excelsior.

Really solid food. Can get busy. Locally sourced meet and drinks. Fun bar but gets crazy busy weekend evenings. Would recommend. The burgers are really strong. They are also accommodating for kids.

Homemade fries were delicious. My hubby had a Cuban dog and I had the Excelsior Beer Brat for lunch and both were very tasty. Nice ambiance, too.

We got there at 1 on a Saturday, and the place wasn't busy at all. We placed our order, and waited 45 minutes for two hot dogs. They also placed a family with two high chairs right next to us, despite the sea of open tables around us. The waitress offered us free dessert, but by the time we got our food, we just wanted to get out of there. Too bad, it has potential.

Pretty decent place. A wee pricey, but the kids menus are a great value. Good choice of beers and quality of the burgers, dogs and pizzas is high.

I had dinner with my wife here on a Saturday night after having a flight at Excelsior Brewing down the street. I didn't have very high expectations and had a great experience. The atmosphere felt like "modern meets sports bar," supported by a beer list with just enough craft brews to satisfy most people. We started out dinner with the Pepperoni Wontons which were good, but the surprise of the night was the Bacon Mac and Cheese Pizza. We've had MCP before, but the consistency of the noodles and amount of flavor (mostly garlic) in the sauce made this a win for me. The crust is also the good kind of flaky and they give you a side of ranch to dip it in. If you go this route, be sure to pony up the extra two bucks and add the sliced hotdogs, which were really more like sausage than traditional hot dogs.

Second time here, first experience was not great... Service was outstanding this time! Our server was very attentive, funny and patient. Appetizer came out quickly (cheese curds and chips/guac) and food followed just as we finished the appetizer. Would definitely come back!!

This place is very very odd. I keep trying to figure out what this place is attempting to be. Is it a pizza place? Is it a burger joint? is it a sports bar? Its it a craft beer bar? I can't walk in and say this is what this place does well. Who ever designed the menu really liked messing with fonts. Each item has its own font which just is strange. Nothing stands out because its all a jumbled mess. The place feels very sterile not much on the walls aside from TVs. They don't highlight any sports going on. There aren't say Twins specials or Hockey watch parties. So it isn't a sports bar. Sports bars serve wings. The pizza is ok nothing special. Other folks in my party had the chicago dog and a burger. The hot dog was a good representation of a chicago dog but pricey for what it is. The burger was well cooked and served with some really good fries. If I had to sum up this place, the food is ok nothing special and a little on the pricey side. the atmosphere is confusing and nothing in the place lends itself to how the place should be. Its not a wild party, ala some of the decks in town. Its not the local townie bar. Its not a family restaurant because of the menu and prices. Its not a high fashion foodie place because its burgers, dogs and pizza. Its just kinda there without a clear vision.

This place has really come around, it was packed by 6 on a Friday. Wait service was crisp, food came out very quickly. Enormous chicken cob salad was good. Burger was also good. Kids burgers and cheese curds also good. It's a little loud, could use some sound dampening material on the ceiling, but overall really pleased the way this place has come along.

We celebrated Father's Day as a family and everything was perfect! Our server was very attentive. Our food arrived in a timely manner, and everything was delicious. I tried the burger of the month with Brie cheese and it was very good. My husband had a pizza, and it was fabulous. My oldest son had the Mac Daddy hot dog with bacon and mac and cheese, and he raved about how good it was. My other two boys had kids meals and their favorite part was the ice cream for dessert. We will definitely be back!

Great neighborhood spot for watching the game, playing trivia, or having dinner with your family. The food is great, beer list is trendy, and service is friendly.

Gave it a 2nd chance after going there for Mother's Day. Not a good plan. Thought service had been slow bc of holiday but no; just really inattentive. There is 1 server in neon high tops that is good but just felt bad for him. Seems like its run by high schoolers Who can somehow serve beer. Only thing on menu is burgers, pizza & hot dogs. After waiting half hr while bartender chatted up missy - ate cardboard pizza w frozen pizza dippers. Would not recommend except they serve later in excelsior and seemed clean, & felt bad for high tops.

My wife and I made the trek to Excelsior to try Maynard's. Lucky for us, Maynard's was a chaotic zoo with no parking, so we drove the main drag until we spotted The Suburban. The food was absolutely excellent and we will definitely be coming back. The Suburban is set back from main st. with ample parking. With decor fitting a modern burger joint including rustic wood floors, sleek metal contrasts, and 15+ slim ultra HD televisions, this place provides a great vibe! More important, the food was excellent! My wife ordered the 10" margarita pizza and it came out piping hot and she said it was wonderful. Parmesan and pepper shakers were provided along with a side plate. I ordered the Black and white burger with tater-tots. The burger was fantastic. I ordered it a little pink and it was done perfectly. Topped with carmelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and fresh greens, it was worth the stop. The portions were generous and served on a metal pan plate which played well into the presentation of the burger/pizza joint. It appeared this was a great spot to grab a beer too with solid Happy Hour prices and plenty of slim HD tvs. We will be back as long as the food stays strong!

We have been there twice. I was really hoping it would be good since it is so close to our house, but both times it was disappointing. I asked for pink in my burger, and it was well done. There was a tiny piece of Brie on the burger. I hope they get their act together. I like the location. The waiter was terrific.

As a local, I wanted to love it. More choices in our lovely village is always a good thing. Definitely a good concept, but our visit was long enough after their opening that kinks should have been worked out, but unfortunately are not. Lackluster service, wrong food brought out, flat atmosphere. Hard to pinpoint exactly why I was underwhelmed; the whole thing just felt kinda "meh."

I've been here twice now and let me tell you. . . I Really like it! The food is great and the service is fast and friendly. The guy that just served me and my gf (a taller skinny young guy) was awesome! I'm in the industry and I was skeptical of this young man but he was great. I recommend the "Meat your maker" burger. Delish!

I've been here 2 times now. The first time was the 2nd day it was open so I chalked it up to that. Simple things like the servers and host staff didn't remember silverware, drinks from the bar were slow but then our Juicy Lucy had no juicy. The server wasn't going to take it off the bill until asked by us. The manager said it was the 2nd time that day it had happened to someone. The serving sizes are HUGE!!!!! Way too much food. The child's menu was too much for an adult. We had mac & cheese and the tator tot chili/cheese thing. Both were bland. 2nd visit (2 weeks after opening) was even worse than the first. Sitting at the bar the bartender didn't know what a vodka sprite was. I kept getting vodka sodas. Instead of apologizing she was rude. My friend asked for a tall boy beer that was clearly on the menu. Bartender brought a bottle, friend told the bartender he asked for a tall boy, and she rudely responded "we don't have those." He said, Hmm, it's on the menu. She rudely responded, well it's not supposed to be. After 2 weeks, you would think they would have known that and either, crossed off the menu or the bartender could have said during the order, "I'm sorry, I know it says that on the menu but it's an error. We are the in process of printing new ones, can I get you a bottle instead." The place is disorganized, staff is rude and the menu is really hard to read (there are a million different fonts). Lots of people standing around, but it took us forever to get silverware. There were 2-3 women at the front who looked like managers, but they were chit chatting with their friends vs running the place during lunch hour. My impression is the place is run by middle age women who thought this would be a fun hobby, not anyone that's ever been in the restaurant business. TV's were very nice though!!!!

We arrived at 6:15 on a Wednesday and the place was fairly open. There was a couple in front of us. The hostess seated them and then came back to the station and didn't even acknowledge us. We stood waiting and staring at each other for about 8 minutes while she wiped down a table and then futzed around the hostess stand. She literally acted like we were invisible. Finally another hostess or waitress spotted us and seated us immediately. Atmosphere is great for watching a game. TVs everywhere. One giant room tho so it could get loud. Love that there are many locally sourced food/drink ingredients. The lettuce for my Caesar salad was amazing...fresh and flavorful. There wasn't enough dressing and the dressing wasn't very flavorful. My teenagers had cheese curds and chips with guac. Chips were amazing, guac just OK. We left a lot of guac behind. Pizza was unique. It looked amazing but my family didn't love it. Atmosphere is A+. Bootleg drink was a little light on liquor. Beer A+. Great place to watch the game and enjoy some local beer.

The drinks I had no complaints on and the did set us up a table quickly, which I appreciated. All I ordered was queso blanco and it didn't come out hot. And I feel bad saying but are those skirts dress code? Too too short on some and not age appropriate on another.

Was excited to try out The Suburban for the first time. Sadly, my excitement was pretty short-lived as the experience was very sub-par. First, from the beginning our server was super rude. If I could remember the guys name I would post it so maybe his manager could teach him a thing or two about respecting your patrons. He clearly wanted to be somewhere else and could never remember who ordered what drinks, answered questions in a rude manner, and gave us trouble about splitting the bill. Second, the food was not nearly worth the price. I could barely bite into my $11 hot dog, and the appetizers were cold. Definitely better options in Excelsior...not sure how long this place will last.

I want this place to be good... but have been 3/4 times. The service is great I like the layout and the TV's. However the food, the pizza are just very very average. I hate to say it.

  • Heather M.

This should be an awesome place. It's got a great location and a good sports bar vibe. However, the service is ALWAYS bad. We live here in Excelsior and most of the restaurants here are always packed so we end up here more than we'd like and have yet to have good service. If you want a place to just hang out and watch sports, it is great. If you expect food, drinks, bill, etc. in an regular timeframe---definitely go somewhere else.

The Suburban is a great neighborhood spot for burgers, pizza and beer. The dining and bar area is stylish, yet not intimidating. For example, I love the assorted sports memorabilia exhibited throughout the open sunny room. In a glut of many good hamburger places, the Suburban stands out. The gaucamole and hand cut fries are perfect. They taste less like the stuff of the fancy burger joints and instead are the work of a staff that has a pride and even passion for getting the details right. Even the music playlist is a fun and funky mix of everything from do-wop, to 10cc to alt indy bands. If your are like me, and make a point of preferring the city over any fun in the burbs, a Saturday afternoon over beers and a huge burger split for two and games on the big screen at the Suburban will charm you out of your urban snobbery. Excelsior is a delightful town and the Suburban is an outstanding casual restaurant.

One word: UNDERWHELMING. My biggest gripe with The Suburban is the atmosphere. It doesn't fit with Excelsior and sticks out like a sore thumb. Their beer selection is sophmoric, and was clearly chosen by someone who's heard about good beer, but doesn't know about good beer (micro's). I went there during one of the first weeks and the pizza took forever to come out. It was okay, but lacked flavor, the crust was undercooked, but price was reasonable. This is just not what I think of when I think of an Excelsior bar and wish the space was utilized for a more unique, less generic restaurant. Although the Suburban is locally-owned by a well respected family, it could very easily be a chain and that's not what belongs in Excelsior. The Suburban would be one of the last places I'd go in Excelsior unless I need a quick meal, sit at the bar, and have just one beer.

Maybe this place has some room for improvements. I'm not sure about the parking situation. I felt like the glass was a bit half full when it came to winning me over.

Wanted to like it going in since it was close to home. Seemed like everything was too salty, and I like salty food. Didn't seem busy, but everything took very long. May be a place to "try on a Monday" as the owner suggested.

I came here after hearing that it offered gluten free options. I first ordered a hotdog but was told that they did not offer a gluten free hotdog bun. I then ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. When the sandwich came it was on a beautifully soft buttery grilled bun. I knew in a moment that it was not gluten free. I asked the waitress if indeed it was gluten free and she said yes but at the same time the woman working behind the bar said no and whisked it away. What came back was a cold bun not grilled and when I picked up the bun it broke apart in my hands. It was obviously a very stale bun and no thought had been put into trying to make it as attractive as the one before. Since there are many places in Excelsior that offer grilled sandwiches I do not think I will be back. Like the old saying goes " you only get one chance to make a good impression" and you guys did not do it.

Went with a friend and her two children. The kids menu was the best I have seen and an excellent value (including an ice cream sunday). I'm not a big meat eater but the burgers all looked so interesting so I ordered one and ate the whole thing... Yum! Definitely going back!

The food is pretty good, not terrible, not amazing either. The first two drinks we ordered off the menu they did not have. (seems like they need to get a handle on their ordering or change the menu) excelsior brat and tots = huge portion of tots, brat was good but strangely not salty at all (I mean when was the last time you had brat with no salt in it?) Lime chicken salad= quite fresh with a good variety of ingredients, one of the better salad options in excelsior. Drinks= wish they would've had the two things we ordered in stock, wine we ended up with was clean tasting and drinkable Ambiance: Very loud and echoey, impossible to have a convo. (a little sound padding in the ceiling would help a ton) Upkeep: one of the huge lights had a bulb out, and the lights around the bar were loose and looked tacked on ) Service: are server was clearly nervous, and wasn't adept at smoothing over the fact items we ordered they didn't have. but everything came out swiftly and hot, no one was outwardly rude. The bartenders did look completely frazzled though.

We had the pizza. Absolutely no flavor!! Went on the weekend and they had 8 servers on and 3 hostesses. WOW that is a lot of $$ spent in labor. It was 1 server per person in the place. With the concrete floors it has a very cold feel. Lot's of TVs - if this is supposed to be a sports bar, not sure! Probably won't make it back here a 2nd time.

I'm a little perplexed by some of the reviews I have read....it's a Sports Bar. TVs, loud/large groups, music...to not expect loud and energy seems a little silly to me. Having said that - it is an amazing addition to Excelsior and the food is awesome. I have been in 4 times this month and it has lived up to its promise every time. The burgers are wonderful and the quantity is more than enough - I recommend the Classic, Blue & White and the El Guaco. Pizza is outstanding! Again - not sure what the others are speaking of - the crust is light and flaky and the sauce is amazing. For a new and great choice - try the Iowa Proscuitto! Perfect blend of cheese, olive oils and meat. There is an large supply of numerous beers and short of being so popular that a couple options weren't available - it forced me to try a couple new ones that I now order regularly. Eating out is for adventure - right? For those that haven't liked being in a "Sport's Bar" - at a Sport's Ba?r - try swinging in for lunch. Much slower pace, a little quieter and I've been able to enjoy the World Cup with some friends. The restaurant has retained the original woodwork of the old lumber building it once housed. Numerous TVs, sports memorabilia - again: it's a Sports Bar and it fits that to a tee. I've found the service virtually perfect every time: when I've been in more of a hurry & when I've wanted to stick around and watch the games. And - unlike a few on here (that I'm quite sure don't find good anywhere - I've never seen any of the staff not friendly and full of energy and smiles. You won't be disappointed. And FYI - why would any of us be concerned with "too much staff?" Wouldn't that mean more people to take care of me?

Been here 2x. Burger was very rare. I ordered medium. Second visit I had Chicago Hot Dog. Bun was toasted and very hard. Not the best. Food was decent but not great. I will probably return but I won't run back.

This place just opened in Excelsior and to be honest, after Lago Tacos, I had low expectations. However, I have been here two times in the past two weeks and the food has been consistently excellent. Great pizza and burgers. In fact, the burger is one of the best I've had. Locally sourced, perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious and "crave-able" food. I ordered their smoked salmon salad once at lunch and that was not great (but I don't love smoked salmon so that's part of why I didn't like it. I read the menu as grilled salmon so my mistake. However, even the mixed greens were intense. It was like eating leaves in the woods and this is coming from a hard core salad/mixed greens eater). With that said, I still give this place 5 stars because that's my fault for ordering a salad at a burger/pizza place. We ordered a pepperoni, mushroom and jalapeno pizza and the crust is perfectly crispy, very fresh/high end ingredients (and you can taste the difference) and really delicious red sauce. But - again - the burger is the star. We ordered the regular classic burger without the sauce (which is thousand island) with american cheese with lettuce, tomato and onion and this is absolutely the quintessential perfect classic burger. My husband got the double and this is a behometh burger but worth the caloric intake in his opinion. Fries are superb as are the very crispy and delicious tater tots. I pretty much want to move into this place at this point. The ambiance is just OK but the food more than makes up for it. Go here now and get the classic burger with american cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Get the sauce on the side and make it a double if you are daring enough. You will not be disappointed.

I think their menu is pretty creative and I've tried about 6 different burgers and they've all been pretty good. The only thing I don't like about it is the atmosphere and decoration of the place. It's got some tacky graffiti on the wall, the bathroom is way too small and it is dead every time I'm there. Like I said, I love the menu and if you're a burger fan, you should really like it. Just wish it wasn't such a boring place to eat at.

I have been to The Suburban countless times and always have excellent service- from the front desk and throughout my meal. They have a great system with extra wait staff help for every table that speeds things along nicely. The food is outstanding and consistent and the prices are good. During my many visits I have had the flatbread pizzas, the burgers, the tots, the wine, and my companions have all raved about their food as well. It is a family friendly restaurant with big windows and big open spaces. I highly recommend supporting this family owned restaurant - they are also supporting local farmers with their great choices of ingredients. It's a great addition to Excelsior for a fun, easy, inexpensive night out, knowing you are eating fresh food and supporting the local economy.

My wife and I are in our early 40's and had a Wednesday night without the kids so we decided to check out this fairly new place in Excelsior. We're not overly picky people, or difficult to please when it comes to restaurants. Here are the pros: - It has a slick look to it, from the outside branding to the inside décor, it's easy to tell that someone put some serious money in this place. - The hostess was very friendly as was our waitress. - Lots of TV's to watch. - I ordered a salad and the ingredients were fresh; the salad looked good - The appetizer and our food came out relatively quickly, then again they seemed to have a lot of staff working and the place was only about 40% full of customers. - The ice cream my wife ordered was incredible. I think it was praline ice cream. And the cons: - Parking situation is a bit odd. Right in front of their door is a large, paved area that you would presume is their parking lot. But it must be shared with the gas station on the main street as there are signs just sitting there in that paved area, telling you that you can't park there. It must be a recurring issue because The Suburban has posted banners on the railings by the front door reminding people there is more parking behind the building. Maybe this isn't anything they can help, but it's odd. - I agree with others that, while the place looks good, it's quite incoherent and disconnected. You'd think with all the large TV's playing sports, that it would be a sports bar, but nothing else really reinforces that theme. And then there's the name..."The Suburban." What exactly is that supposed to mean? How does that theme carry out through the rest of the place? It doesn't seem to do so. Maybe it doesn't matter, but you do feel like you're sort of in "vanilla" land after a while, nothing bad about it, but nothing great either. - I usually don't pay too much attention to prices, but the prices here are a little steep for sleepy little Excelsior. I realize it's the playground of the rich and beautiful in the western Minnetonka suburbs, but come on...$13 for a salad? - Speaking of my salad, they placed a LOT of lettuce (it was good quality lettuce) in a large bowl with a relatively small amount of chicken placed in the corner of the bowl. If the other ingredients are that expensive I'd encourage them to reduce the size of the bowl, and increase the amount of chicken they put in there. - I also agree with others that some menu designer thought it would be a good idea to put just about every...little...thing on the menu in a different font. Very, very distracting. - Lots and lots of TV's. If you like to stare at TV's while you're out with other people, presumably to enjoy their company, then you will have no shortage of opportunity to stare at a number of large TV's. They are plastered all over the place. Of course this isn't a new trend, TV's seem to rule many restaurants these days, but the Suburban seems to take it to new heights. Most of the people I saw in this place were literally just staring at the TV's, vs. talking to each other. Congrats to The Suburban for accelerating this nasty societal trend. - Loud. Again, I know the trend for many places these days is to make them loud; why?...I don't know, maybe people just don't want to talk to each other anymore? But this Suburban place takes decibel levels to new heights. Between the TV's, the blaring music, glasses clinking, customers talking louder and louder to overcome all the other noise - and then all of this noise bouncing off ALL the hard surfaces in the place (not a soft surface to be found, truly), it is really difficult to hear anyone. My wife was sitting right across from me at a bar-bench type table, maybe 18" to 2' away from me, and there were many times we couldn't hear each other. And no, we aren't your grandparents, nor hard of hearing. I was torn between telling the hostess about this big issue, but decided to pass. I'd be hard pressed to visit this place again. Even if they fixed most of these issues, the volume alone would drive me nuts. I'd rather go to Haskell's bar down by the water, which is a "unique" local watering hole, or Jake O'Connors which is dark and Irish (there goes the good food!) but at least you can hear your dinner guest.

I've been here twice now, and have ordered the Midwestern Pizza both times. It's my favorite pizza in the Twin Cities and it pairs perfectly with the Suburban's extensive beer list. I also like that they have a lot of local beers and are always open to suggestions for new taps to add. This is my new favorite sports bar and I can't wait to go back soon!
