"Tyler was very attentive and incredibly friendly. I recommend the friday night walleye fish fry and the chicken wings were delicious. A welcome respite from the wilderness. The beer tasted amazing esp the blueberry porter.

This is probably my 1st negative review on Yelp. Thought out the years you would think I would learn... During the summer, if it's overcast DO NOT go here especially if you've got more then 4 people. Service is horrible- consistently. In fact this time my wife and sister in law cleared our own tables after 30 min. What really annoyed us this time is the server(s) didn't seem to care. On a positive note the food has always been good and the blueberry blonde beer never disappoints. Also- when it's just the wife and I which we sit at the bar the service is great, so it seems to be dinning room issue.

My girlfriend, her cousins, and I came here a couple weeks ago to watch the women's world cup (some of us our huge soccer fans), and we could not have chosen a better place to watch the game. Being from the south, I am new to the concept of fried cheese curds, and I must say that after having tried some I found them delicious! My sandwich was also very good; as usual, I ordered the pulled pork, which I have been craving lately for some reason, and was not disappointed. One cool thing about this place is that they serve their own craft beers. The one I picked (I think it was their summer brew, though I can't recall the name) was okay in my opinion, but had a funny aftertaste. But since taste in beer is a pretty subjective thing, I can't critique this place too harshly on account of that. Overall, great place to go with really neat atmosphere. One side is a restaurant; one side is a bar (it's kind of set up like two businesses in one), so that's kind of a neat concept.

Had dinner and drinks here. Started with the Hummus (baked pita chips were great) and an IPA. Fish for dinner was excellent. Filled a growler with the golden ale to take back to the hotel for the night. Good beer, good food!

We had a great time at a beer-pairing dinner! The food was awesome for the beer pairing, and I'm looking forward to getting back to try some of their regular menu and more of the beers BREWED RIGHT THERE at the Boathouse! It's great to find a place with great food, but great beer AND great food really sets this pub apart from others!

Stopped here at 1:15 in pm for a quick lunch. Stood for 1/2 hour waiting for someone to approach us. Surrounded by empty tables that were waiting to be bused. Finally cleared one by ourselves and sat down and waited another 15 minutes before a snarling waitress gave us menus and then disappeared. Waited another 15 minutes and she never returned. Left without eating. Understand if they got slammed but no manager in sight. No apologies for waiting and cleaning a table for them. And no hint of friendliness. Really???

Decent food. I had the falafel wrap with fries and it was good but nothing exceptional. It wasn't bad but I probably wouldn't order it again. I would still go to this restaurant again but it wasn't a must see.

I really wanted to like this place, but it failed to deliver on all fronts. First, the food: totally uninspired, which I can accept from a brew pub...but frozen, then fried or burnt? Ick. I feel like an old Prince song when I say, I guess I should have known...when they didn't ask how I wanted the burger cooked...but I'm pretty sure it came straight out of a chest freezer. Whatever you do, steer clear of the gunboats...unless of course you like partially cooked wild rice and mushy jalapeños. They were so gross, when we sent them back the waitress said, "oh are those raw?" Second, the wait time: we play a friendly family game of "guess how long till our food arrives" when we take the kids out to restaurants. It kills time and makes waiting fun...except when the wait exceeds 30 minutes for some burgers and fries. Even the kids joked that this was the longest wait we've ever had. Lastly, family friendliness: in person they seem totally cool with families, but there are signs all over, including a huge bold footer on their menu that say, "kids must stay in their seats at the table at all times." Really? I've got good kids who have been to restaurants all over the country, so no big deal, but it puts off this vibe of "kids not welcome here," which I don't dig. All in all, a sad little place in a magnificent little town. C'mon Ely, you can do better.

We had the cheesy chipotle chicken and wild rice soup that was the best soup I've had in a long time! Superb!! My husband had fish and chips he thought were excellent. I had a brisket cheese burger that was the special. Brisket and cheese on top of a burger with sour cream fries. Very very good!!!! And we asked how the margaritas were and man oh man could she make a margarita!! Go if you're in town!!

Don't be fooled by the exterior of Boathouse. We almost turned around and left while walking up to the front door, but to our surprise... it was very nice once inside. I really enjoyed the menu. Rather than overwhelming you with every menu option under the sun, which no one can do well, it provides cleverly conceived appetizers, burgers and sandwiches that it does very well. It also brews it own beer selections, plus offers both a restaurant side for families, along with a bar side with pool & darts, if your interested in playing a few games. The only reason I couldn't give it five stars was due to the food taking quite a while to arrive, despite the restaurant not being very busy. The prices were good and the service was great though. Give it a try!

Service was great. I'm a vegetarian and got their falafel and it really hit the spot. It came on pita bread with hummus, yogurt, and a delicious cole slaw on the side; I don't normally like cole slaw, but this one was light on the mayo and crispy. We loved their blueberry blonde; it was refreshing and served with fresh blueberries, which was icing on the cake. We live out of state but will be back during our next visit!

Today was our second time going to The Boathouse. My husband and I were absolutely appalled at the service we received upon sitting down at the bar. The bartender (an older woman) asked us what we wanted, innocent enough. We responded that we weren't quite sure, could we get menus? She immediately looked annoyed and raised her voice to say, "No, what can I get you to drink"?! We repeated that we weren't sure but would like to look at a menu, to which she replied that the beer menu was on the wall behind her (we weren't there for beer to be honest). I then asked for a glass of water, to which she blatantly ignored and continued helping some guys at the end of the bar. She clearly does not enjoy her job, and that sucks, but we will never go back there and will never recommend this restaurant to anyone!! Reading through the other negative comments, I totally agree. Take your valuable money elsewhere!!! Good luck!

The Boathouse has been on my brewery hit list for over a year and I finally had a chance to get up to Ely to taste their brews. I was going up the Boundary waters and wanted to take a growler with us. We ordered a flight of beer and the two that were good to my palate was the oatmeal stout and the blueberry blonde. Which ironically enough the blueberries were ripe in the BWCA. I took a growler of the oatmeal stout as it was filling as well as tasty. It tasted even better after paddling & portaging all day! Edit: I forgot to add that the BWCA growler is a plastic jug that is allowable in the BWCA area and not the glass ones. You have to ask for them specifically when ordering.

Our first stop during our weekend in Ely, and we walked out incredibly disappointed. The service was friendly and quick, but both the food and the beer were huge letdowns. If you're going to have the only brewpub in town, you should also have the best beer! I ordered the walleye sandwich. I received a gigantic portion of greasy, mushy, deep-fried fish that was overflowing a stale hoagie bun. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it was frozen. My husband's beer battered chicken sandwich was slightly better, but still left something to be desired. The beer wasn't terrible, but none of it was outstanding. The best of the flight was the Oatmeal Stout which had a nice rich malty base, notes of coffee and chocolate, and a smooth feel. We had intended to bring growlers home with us, but after a flight and a pint, couldn't find anything worth the extra effort.

This restaurant was great! To the people complaining about frozen burgers- Really?! It's Ely! Where the heck in or around Ely did you see live cattle?? The north woods is not favorable for any kind of agriculture- most everything in Ely has been transported there. That being said, the food was delicious! This may be a good or bad thing to you, but it was the juiciest, greasiest burger I have ever had! The bottom half of the bun was soaked through. About 3/4 of the way through I finished it with my fork. Fantastic. :)

Went here for dinner over Memorial Day weekend 2012. They have a typical bar food menu with a few additions, including a whole section of walleye dinners. I had a fresh hand-cut steak which was the special. It was really tasty! We tried four of their beers and all were good, including a blueberry beer which isn't something I would usually enjoy but did here. The bartender/waiter had an excellent knowledge of their beer menu and gave good recommendations for the uninitiated in our group. Overall good experience.

Had an good burger, and the best sweet potato fries I've ever had! The service was quick.

The boathouse is a popular place and their Friday night all-you-can-eat walleye is awesome! Ample portions of tasty fish fresh and hot from the kitchen served with French fries and coleslaw. The Boathouse features both a family dining room and a bar/taproom. Their homebrewed beers range from very good to mediocre. Update: I've been to the Boathouse several times naw and and I'm improving my rating to four stars. I'm still not impressed with their microbrews but the the Friday all-you-can-eat walleye is still excellent and service is consistently good.

I stopped into the Boathouse for a late lunch. First things first, the restauant is divided into two separate sections: the bar side and the restaurant side. When customers first enter, they are on more of the bar side, which when I came in made the place look closed: lights were off, tables cleared and nobody around. I had to venture into the other room to even be sure they were open. Hopefully, the owners will read up their reviews on YELP and start opening that side. As soon as I did walk into the other section, I was greeted immediately. The server was friendly and brought me a water and menu immediately. She also explained the specials. Since it is a Brewpub, I asked about their beer selection. They only had three on tap: Blueberry Blonde, a Porter and one other that I'm forgetting at the moment. The Blueberry Blonde was great; it had a light bite, reminded me of a wheat beer like Blue Moon but with a distinct blueberry flavor. I also ordered their special, a roast beef and swiss sandwhich and their "buffalo fries". The sandwhich was good and toasted, crispy on the outside but could have used a little more cheese; the fries were really good too but weren't quite what I was expecting. If they advertise them as buffalo flavor, I'd either expect them to make them spicier or serve with buffalo sauce or ranch. Overall, the place was pretty good and I will definitely go back. However, it is a lot more like a diner than a brewpub and they need to upgrade if they want to create that type of reputation.

Ambience is really nice. Service fast, friendly and efficient. Friday Night Fish fry was unbelievably good as was the Reuben sandwich. My boys said it was the best Reuben they had ever had. IPA's very good. Highly recommend!

The only brewery in town and the beers are amazing. The beers have BWCA theme names and you can get your favorite beer in a 64 oz. BWCA Legal Plastic Growler. I tried the Entry Point Golden Ale and it was awesome. My wife had the Blueberry Blonde and it had fresh blueberries on the bottom. I will definitely come back for my next trip to the BWCA.

The Boathouse (Cranberry's to others) is a great place to catch a meal or have some drinks! Their beer they brew is very good and worth sampling. There is usually plenty of seating unless it's right after church, then good luck!!

This restaurant is open all the time during the summer, from 6 am to 1 am so it is ideal to grab some food before you set out into the boundary waters. I've only had breakfast here but the egg ham and cheese and similar variations were very good, the coffee kept coming and the waitress was very friendly despite the very early hour.

Just discovered this little gem on our current trip to Ely, MN. They have 2 types of growlers available. A glass me and BWCA plastic ones. I enjoyed their porter and blueberry blonde. They had 4 brews on tap today. 2 on tap the other day. They also sell liquor drinks and food, including duck wings, for you adventurous types. Great group of people. Very friendly. Thanks for the porter, Ben! (From the one who showed you the picture of PHIL from Tequesta Brewing Company in FL!)

We went to Boathouse Pub and Restaurant in Ely, MN. Overall, we all give it a B-. Some good, some bad. Jodi had Nachos Grande that looked like a school science fair project...very greasy, and the lettuce was all wilted. KayMarie had the "Motorboat" burger that she said was very good. Jonathan had kids mini tacos..he says "It was burnt and gross." They did look like hockey pucks cut in half. Christopher had fish sticks, about which he says, "These are the best fish sticks I ever had." I had the ribeye steak which was really good. Along with it, I had cheesy broccoli, which was stone cold, and a side of chipotle rice ("WHERE'S THE RICE?") It was like 2 tablespoons. I'm not asking for a heaping mound, but throw some more on! Also, now this is funny...this place is a micro brewery, and the waitress was not knowledgeable of the beers they brew. And, she asked if I wanted more water. Why not ask if i wanted another beer. I would have had another. And, not until we were leaving did the waitress ask the rest of the family if they wanted refills...(sigh) we may give it one more try familyfriendlyoutings.bl…

I'm giving it three stars for the great service. I have the walleye dinner. 12" huge beer battered walleye with no flavor. But not as greasy as the other reviews said. Mixed veggies that were ok. Twice baked potato that was dry and had an overpowering ham flavor. Be sure to check the prices before you order. I didn't and was surprised to find that it was$26. My son had the kids cheeseburger which was way over cooked. My daughter had the chili. It had big pieces of steak with a smokey flavor that overpowered the chili. Overall staff was nice, place was clean. The food was disappointing and I would not return. We don't drink beer so I can't comment on that.

Love this place! The walleye sandwich is one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten, and being up here in Ely one really must have some walleye (if one is unfortunate enough to not be able to catch your own :) The assortment of fry options is great, but the sweet potatoe fries were definitely among the best I've ever had. I also tried my relative's "Motorboat" hamburger and it was fantastic, if we go back I'll probably get one of those myself. Another person got the chili and raved about it, really everyone in our group loved everything, no complaints! The atmosphere is good, very brewpub with a nice neighborhood bar feeling. The service was excellent and our server was very friendly and knew her recommendations. If you are in Ely, you need to come here!

Friendly place, beer was slightly better than average, food was slightly below average with a way over cooked burger. Try a shot of the locals favorite shooter, Pelinkovac and get instant local cred.

Service was kind of slow coming in but food and beer were good. Duck wings were tasty with their sweet sour spicy sauce. Nice filet on the wallet sandwich. Pulled pork was good too!

Always a favorite when I'm up in Ely. We always frequent the bar side of things because of the atmosphere, and overall vibe over the restaurant. Great beer, and tequila (Casamigos) if that's your thing. Growlers to go both glass and plastic if heading into BWCA. You can't miss the duck wings! (Not to be confused with Duck Tails...awooo oo!)

  • Mike B.

After a full-day of paddling, nothing tastes better than a craft beer. Luckily for every one of the Ely side of the BWCA, Boathouse offers really good beers. It's not the best craft beer I've ever had, but they're definitely adventurous in what they have to offer. Definitely a pit stop that needs to be made if you're in Ely.

Great food choices, even for a veggie like me. Beer is craft brew with a wide variety on tap, plus a full bar. Atmosphere is casual and friendly, very welcoming even for us out-of-towners. Recommend it for an easy evening watching the football and grabbing a bite.

You're in Ely and about to eat out of a backpack for the week - make this your last meal before heading out of town. Ribeye Sandwich - the meat wouldn't fit on the hogie bun. Same with the Walleye Sandwich - huge portions and taste to match. We didn't even get into the great brews listed on the wall!
