We didn't really get to try our food while it was warm. The waitress brought out our food and spilled a member of my parties beer across the table and all over my lap. I felt like I had wet my pants, we asked for boxes so we could take our food and leave so I could change clothes. We needed to make a trip to Shopko for dry clothing so I could change, so by the time we ate it was cold, but we had paid close to $40.00 for the food. The Waitress, Samantha, did give us a discount of 2.65 off from our bill, the biggest discount she said she could. I felt like a customer that did not matter, I have never had such a bad experience at a restaurant before.

This is a must go to place if you have not been to Ely. The place is a tradition for me and whomever I am going to the Boundary Waters with for our meal the evening before we depart. I have never been disapointed and this time I had the prime rib. Most excellent, I must say, cooked to perfection. Why go anyplace else when you can get a great meal here before a week of mostly dried and packaged food in the wilderness! If they are busy, and no tables available; ask to sit at the bar, and the bartender will even put in your full meal order for you, as happened one year for me, how is that for service!

We came here with a group of guys that had just came back from the BWCA to try the famous Bucky Burger. All of us ordered it and we waited, and waited, and look that table that came in after us got their food, and waited, and that other table just got their food, and waited and finally we were able to try the Bucky burger after about an hour of being there and it wasn't all that busy. The presentation was good, the fries a bit cold and stale tasting. I ordered a medium-well burger and mine was pink in the middle. There was no way I was returning it and waiting another hour. The bacon looked undercooked. The sauce used on it was great and the other toppings were good. Otherwise, I would say that this is a sightly above average burger, that would have tasted better if it came how I ordered it. Moral of this story is that if you're hungry after coming back from the BWCA, try someplace a little faster.

I did the "Bucky Burger", it's nothing to write home about but wasn't bad. I had a good experience with the patrons and the bar tenders.

Highly recommended. I regret passing this place up on my many past trips through Ely. The strip steak was a perfect medium rare and very flavorful, the prime rib was a bit chewy but still tasty. Our sides and apps were all pleasing too.

The Ely Steak House (formerly known as Gary's) has always been the spot myself and my family love going to. Everything is good here, the staff are amazing and they offer a full bar and complimentary pool (2 tables). I suggest the Bucky Burger or Walleye Parmesan.

Just get the Bucky burger My partner and I recently ordered take-out so keep in mind that this review reflects the quality of the food only. Our dinner for two cost about $20, which was very appropriate given the quality and quantity of the meal. I opted for a grilled cheese sandwich, which was simply exactly that, as well as a cup of French onion soup, which was outstanding with gooey melted Swiss cheese and a rich deep flavor that was not overwhelmingly onion-y. My partner got the Bucky burger, which was as amazing as others have said. I'm not sure if it was the quality of the beef, the toasted bun, the melted cheese, or the perfect amount of grease but one bite of that burger would surely make a certain red-haired clown sit down and question what he was doing with his life.

Always good food and friendly service. The bucky buger is awsome and the steaks have always been a perfect medium-rare.

Good steak sammie, great fries, cold beer. Wednesday night draft beer for a buck - that's worth 4 stars right there. Casual atmosphere, can get super crowded. Their sides are really good too: baked sweet potato and wild rice are my two faves but they have fries, coleslaw etc too. Never had bad food here, but some of the entrees are stupidly rich. The Prime Rib Crisper was not crispy at all, tasted pretty good but was heavy/greasy. Over all, I have a good time there and the food is good.

I went here for drinks, they were good, the bar was comfy and this is the type of place you could spend hours while the snow is blowing outside (pool, darts, music, good vibe and quite a few people). The pours are very generous and the drinks are very cheap by any city standards $4-5 for cocktails and that is off happy hour.

We came here prior to heading out on a 4 day canoe trek. They had us sit in the bar since they were doing karaoke in the restaurant section, which was odd. Seems like it should be the other way around. No worries...we rolled with it. However, once we had the menus, it took our waiter about 20 minutes to come take our order. While he wasn't a jerk or anything, he also wasn't all that friendly towards us. From what we had heard others raving about, we decided to all order the Bucky Burger and really enjoyed the hell out of it. Wow, it was incredibly delicious. Like some of the other reviews, we had a fly issue and had to keep swatting them away from our food while we tried to eat. This could have been a 4-star review, but based on the service and the fly issue, it's a solid three.

Wow, this place is a COMPLETE throwback. Sizzler steak plates, big heavy wooden tables, kitschy decor, and crappy bread served on a tiny cutting board... it feels just like going back to a Mr. Steak in about 1978. The food is generally passable (the on-tap beer selections are pretty good), but I can't say it was the best food we had in Ely AND it was a bit expensive for the quality. That said, it is probably worth the trip just for the time-warp experience.

I ate here just once. In fairness, if I topped again maybe I would have better food. The only time I was there with my brother after a day of grouse hunting, I found the food to be average and I thought the prices for a small northern Minnesota town were high. Not sure how the locals can afford to eat at this place and keep them open. IMHO, average and over priced.

Get the Bucky Burger or the Clucky. Oh and ask the bartender for a "Toe Sucker."

Although the service was great, the steaks were simply OK, and at $25 for a 12 oz. New York Strip I was expected better than OK. It came with a small salad, some bread, but only about five or six steak cut fries were included as well.

If you are looking for a cold beer, play a game of pool or table hockey and get some great food, there's no better place than the Steakhouse! We go to BWCA every year and we always stopped at Cranberries (now The Boathouse...which is terrible) and craved a Baron Burger and a beer after our trek. After Cranberries closed, we searched for another burger joint to hit. Thankfully, we came upon this burger. The "BUCKY" burger is a MUST every time we go to Ely now. Skip everything else and get this burger...the sauce is the secret weapon on this juicy mammoth. I did have the Steak Tournadoes the first time I was there and it was pretty dang good but from now on...I'll never veer away from this magnificent burger. I love my burgers and this one ranks in my top 3 for sure. BUCKY beats the Baron to smithereens!

We go to Ely every year and eating dinner here is always on our list! I order the petit filet and it has never failed to meet my expectations! Hubby ordered the "Bucky burger" for the first time and said it was the best burger he ever had - something about the sauce! Get there early and enjoy!

The first time I had dinner there I ordered prime rib medium rare. It came to the table well done-what a dissapointment. I have had dinner there 4 times since, and while the food was done to order it was nothing special. My last time there (this November) I ordered the prime rib med. rare and it was very good/excellent. Salads are good, homemade bread from local bakery excellent. I will go again, and give another star if the food is as good as the last time.

Yuck! I know this place gets a lot of good reviews, but not from me. The steaks are over priced, and of a low value, tuff, and stringy. The night we ate there, there was a leak in the ceiling that was dripping on a ceiling fan, and flinging water onto the table. The waitress when told acted like it was no big deal. It's not place I would ever eat again.
