Wow, really great burgers! So many choices, plus homemade chips, onion rings, or fries. The burgers are huge, but you can choose a "wimpy" option for a small size. Service was very friendly. Setting is definitely rustic, but the food is great.
Once you discover this gem in Ely, Minnesota, you will keep coming back. Every time we are in town, we stop at least once a week for a great and HUGE gourmet burger! I like the Whisky and the Miner's a lot! The setting is so casual and peaceful on Shagawa lake. You just can't beat the friendly atmosphere and great food! Be sure to try the ribs too, they are fabulous! Can't wait to be there in July!!
This is Ely's Hidden Gem. It's a couple turns off Sheridan St, but well worth finding it! I don't want to use a lot of words in this review because the quality, variety, and flavor of these burgers is indescribable. HUGE 1/2 lb. burgers topped with everything from bacon to green olives to sausage to ham to ghost peppers. That's right, GHOST PEPPERS. The "Double Burner" burger challenge is topped with jalapenos, ghost peppers, and ghost pepper sauce. So intense that you need to sign a waiver to attempt it. Check out the photo I uploaded to see my journey to victory through the spiciest thing I've ever eaten. Think you have what it takes to join me on the wall of winners and bring home a "I Ate the Double Burner" T-shirt as proof of your manliness (or womanliness)? Do it, I dare you.

Seemed like a hot spot-and we met someone at the hotel that said it was the best place to eat in Ely...Hmm. Not exactly our experience. I got the Rueben soup-which was just kind of gloppy, cold, and gross. The corn bread was good though...I was glad I could get a half salad-and ordered a Northern Cobb-which was a Cobb salad with smoked salmon. The dressing tasted homemade-and wasn't bad. My husband got a Thai Chicken sandwich. I would have given it three stars except the soup was such a fail.
Ate here one night and was pleasantly surprised. I had the walleye and was very pleased. Definitely would go back. Went back this year and ordered the white fish again. Loved it last year and it didn't disappoint me this year either. Great waitress too!
My visit to the Chocolate Moose today was a huge let-down compared to the blissful experiences I had here as a child. Every year, my extended family would make the trek to Ely for the week, and one day we would visit the Chocolate Moose. It was delicious for years until they got a new chef. Today, I was reminded of that new chef. And a new employee... who was not adequately trained to handle the lunch rush on a Wednesday in the middle of July. It took about 15 minutes after ordering to receive a chai latte, and about 15 more minutes to get our food--which had obviously been sitting for a while. I couldn't tell if she (our waitress) didn't know how to handle the work load, or if she really wasn't trained well. I felt bad for her because I called her out on some bad cornbread, which was WAY too dry to serve, and my lukewarm smoked turkey wrap. She dealt with it well and removed the cornbread from our bill. So snaps for that, but I wasn't impressed with how she had handled my party up until that point. I was also unimpressed by the food. The cornbread, as previously stated, was dry. So dry that I picked it up and crumbled it in my fingers no prob. Not okay. For an entree I ordered the smoked turkey wrap with a side salad. The salad had lots of nice fresh greens, and my choice of dressing--pretty standard. The wrap was huge, but sent me a curveball. The flour tortilla on the outside had been crisped up on a griddle so I thought the wrap would be hot, but the whole dish was lukewarm. The turkey wasn't hot, and it wasn't cool like it should have been if it had been sitting in a refrigerator. (Someone call the health inspector?) Crunchy-room-temp-wrap is not appetizing. Though, the ingredients were fresh and tasty on their own, I kind of think this is something I could have made at home. It needed a little more love. Top it off with a long wait to get in, and the fact that I was a little touchy from leaving family vacation, and voila. Also, they use Blue Bunny ice cream and Ready Whip. The venue and reputation of this restaurant scream happy homemade food. But my friends, the truth is otherwise.

Great beer and good food. A gem in Ely!
"Tyler was very attentive and incredibly friendly. I recommend the friday night walleye fish fry and the chicken wings were delicious. A welcome respite from the wilderness. The beer tasted amazing esp the blueberry porter.
Quality brew and food. Get the Steak bits.

Great for breakfast- it's a must when we come in town for vacation. The stuffed hash browns are the bomb. The local staff is always friendly and quick. Definitely a local place which is cash only but if you want a great big breakfast this is the place for you.
I thought the beef patty tasted funky. It tastes like a frozen beef patty from wherever. I hope that small town cafés use fresh ground beef. No luck.
Great little breakfast joint. The stuffed hash-browns were very tasty! The other yelpers weren't kidding when they said the portions are big. The only down side is they only accept cash, as a business traveler I prefer to use the compnay card when I travel. Other than that it's a good way to strat your day.

Honestly, I lived in Ely 22 years ago. Call me petty, but at that time I made VERY little money and it was a treat to get to go out. I ordered a 1/2 sausage and 1/2 pepperoni pizza. When I got the bill I was shocked that there was a charge to make a 1/2 and 1/2 pizza. I worked at 2 pizza places while in high school and I have ordered pizza from dozens of places in my life and never been charged extra for this. I questioned the server at the time and she stated this was the norm for them. I honestly haven't been back since then, nor will I. Seemed like they were nickle and diming customers. The Pizza Hut in town has always had quality pizza in a sit down restaurant. Not sure if there are other pizza option there now. I get up there once or twice a year now.
Basic Italian pizza, pastas & salads in downtown Ely. We had a long wait for our pizza. They work you in with their take out pizzas. Busy place.
First: pizza was terrific and service was excellent. See below: We were there with a party of 22 during a HUGE rainstorm when water drifted into the dining room from the parking lot outside. The staff calmly shuffled the affected tables to our section of the room while they stemmed the tide. Meanwhile, our server never skipped a beat with drink orders and quick food service. Hats off to all on staff ... see you again sometime.

Great burgers. Good bar selection. Perfect spot after 5 days in the Boundary Waters.
Atmosphere and food was great. Good burger and Walleye sliders after exiting the Boundary Waters. Waitress gave good service. Would have given a higher rating but bartender was extremely rude. Was greeted terribly and even had a coaster thrown at me before receiving my drink. Worked service industry for years and I wouldn't dream of being so cranky on the job. Nice beers, stay away from the flat cider!
Really disappointed in this place. Nothing was good, it was only edible. Salad and entrees underwhelming and low on any real flavor. Service was friendly but not what I would consider good. Sweltering inside the building, air never kicked on.

We didn't really get to try our food while it was warm. The waitress brought out our food and spilled a member of my parties beer across the table and all over my lap. I felt like I had wet my pants, we asked for boxes so we could take our food and leave so I could change clothes. We needed to make a trip to Shopko for dry clothing so I could change, so by the time we ate it was cold, but we had paid close to $40.00 for the food. The Waitress, Samantha, did give us a discount of 2.65 off from our bill, the biggest discount she said she could. I felt like a customer that did not matter, I have never had such a bad experience at a restaurant before.
This is a must go to place if you have not been to Ely. The place is a tradition for me and whomever I am going to the Boundary Waters with for our meal the evening before we depart. I have never been disapointed and this time I had the prime rib. Most excellent, I must say, cooked to perfection. Why go anyplace else when you can get a great meal here before a week of mostly dried and packaged food in the wilderness! If they are busy, and no tables available; ask to sit at the bar, and the bartender will even put in your full meal order for you, as happened one year for me, how is that for service!
We came here with a group of guys that had just came back from the BWCA to try the famous Bucky Burger. All of us ordered it and we waited, and waited, and look that table that came in after us got their food, and waited, and that other table just got their food, and waited and finally we were able to try the Bucky burger after about an hour of being there and it wasn't all that busy. The presentation was good, the fries a bit cold and stale tasting. I ordered a medium-well burger and mine was pink in the middle. There was no way I was returning it and waiting another hour. The bacon looked undercooked. The sauce used on it was great and the other toppings were good. Otherwise, I would say that this is a sightly above average burger, that would have tasted better if it came how I ordered it. Moral of this story is that if you're hungry after coming back from the BWCA, try someplace a little faster.

Great breakfast stop. Stuffed hash browns are packed with all your favorite foods: eggs, veggies, cheese. Good smoothies and a variety of french toast and pancake options. The coffee is so-so. We enjoyed skimming some of the loaner books about Ely offered up at yhe checkout counter.
The food was adequate; we had the French toast and blueberry pancakes. The service was horrid; they had a trainee working the register, who should not have been left on his own. We had to repeat our order twice and still half of it was missed. The waitress was not apologetic. The end, the owner decided to come our breakfast. Although, he handed my credit card to my husband.
The wait staff there is non existent. Apparently, you have to be a regular to actually get any attention whatsoever. The place wasn't even busy to make it worse. The food was ok, but overpriced for the lack of service that should come with it. skip this place on your visit.
