Hana is to Korean Food what Norman Bates is to innkeepers. We arrived towards the end of the evening to find dirty tables covered with dishes all over the restaurant. The one "clean" table which we were directed to was still covered in wiped down food debris. No Japanese items on the menu to speak of. Just Korean and pretty exotic Korean at that, with tongue and tripe. I like Korean restaurants, and I would never set foot in this armpit again.

YUM. Small little place, usually only one or two people working. Pretty authentic food, don't expect to be offered a fork. In my estimation, this is the way a Korean restaurant should be. Their bibimbop was pretty good, not the best I've had, the egg was way overcooked, but I'll be back for more. Also - decent lunch pricing.

Hana has been around for many years. Originally it was Hana Japanese Restaurant, "and Korean" was added later; About 25 years ago, it was modified to Hana Korean & Japanese Restaurant when the Korean couple, who own it now, took it over and remodeled it. At that time, there was still a former Hook, Line, & Sinker restaurant a half mile east and a Ponderosa and A Big Boy a mile west. SIDE NOTE: Ypsilanti Township wasn't more cosmopolitan then; It was richer . It's a tribute to Korean shop keeper savy that Hana ( Japanese for flower) weathered the major American Auto business downturn of the 1980s & the current national downturn. It's a wife & husband operation. The husband is an excellent cook who is equally skilled at basic Japanese & Korean dishes. He serves up excellent Suki Yaki. NOTE: Many people assume Kimche is about stinky hot pickled Chinese Cabbage. Not so. If you like Kimche and ever visit Hana ask for the Radish Kimche. You'll be glad you did. It's made with Japanese Daikon radish (which is white, not yellow as many Westerners assume, based on the yellow Japanese pickled radish found in all small American Japanese, Korean, & Chinese groceries) My wife & I have patronized Hana a few times a year for many years. We find the food always made to order (traditional in S.E. Asia) and the ingredients fresh & never loaded up with soy sauce or msg.. The dinning room is a little large but the restaurant is still very much like the small family run neighborhood places I knew as a boy growing up in S.E. Asia. As such, I rate it superior.

Very tasty Korean restaurant in the outer wilds of Ypsi. While the place was not full there was a constant stream of customers coming and going, all seeming to enjoy their food. I got a bokkum, very spicy and tasty with lots of fresh vegetables. My friend got a tofu stew, one that's available with and without meat. When finding out my friend was a vegetarian the waitress went out of her way to point out all the dishes that either were or could be made vegetarian. The banchan were tasty, although I wished the kimchi was hotter. However, it was crisp and had that special tang that freshly made kimchi has. There was also a tofu dish, a potato dish, radish vinegar salad and a couple of others. All in all we stuffed ourselves stupid with delicious food for around $30 (including tax & tip) and had some left overs.

FANTASTIC! This ain't the place to bring your date (not for the first time anyway), but from the food stand point, it's a must visit. PROS: Lunch Specials, Stir-fried Spicy Pork (or Calamari), Spicy Chicken Wings, Seafood Soup... CONS: Location A must visit if you are in the Ypsi area!

My family and I have been going here regularly for 20+ years now. There prices are cheap and the portions are HUGE! Even the ban chan (side dishes) are the size of entrees from some restaurants. All their bok gyum (stir fry) dishes, from pork, tripe, squid, etc...are great. Their yook gae jang (spicy beef and vegetable stew) is my personal favorite. They make it different than most other Korean places...its not as spicy as most other places but to me, it tastes much heartier. Their dishes also seem to cater to the non-korean palette. Every none korean/asian friends I have taken there loved the food, especially the jap chae (thin clear noodles stir fried with beef and veggies). Great food, great prices, and huge portions. It doesn't get much better.

I used to love the Gop Chang Jungol (beef intestine stew) at Maru in Ann Arbor, but since it's closed, we went to Hana. I didn't expect to see it at Hana because not many places have it (like seoul garden does not). I was so happy to see it on the menu! I like it extra spicy so I ordered it that way, and also some spicy pork bokkum. I say Gop Chang Jungol was the best. Bokkum was good too, but I think there were more onions than meat. Price came out to be about $30 for 1 drink, pork bokkum, and a small Gop Chang Jungol, and tip.

My wife and I found this place while we drove by Michigan avenue. We were skeptical based on the neighbor and how the restaurant looked from outside. We read some of the reviews here at Yelp and decided to try it. We went there during lunch time on a Thursday and we found that customers kept coming-in for dine in and carry out. The price is really good. Most of the lunch menu are between $5 and $7, including bulgoki, chap-chae, etc. Pretty good food though my wife thought that most of the side and main dishes were quite sweet. We had chap-chae and kan-pyon-gi, and both were good. Our total bill came out about $18, and had we gone to places like Seoul Garden, we would have been billed $25-30. Why do I give 5 stars? You will get the most from the money you pay from Korean restaurants in the AA/Ypsi area. The service was pretty good and food was good. We got more than what we had expected. If you want eat Korean foods but don't want to spend a lot, Hana may be the place for you to go.

This is an awesome place! Hands down right price and right portions. Mom and Pop owned joint and doesn't look much from the outside but if you are in it for the food...You best believe this is the joint to have your taste buds watered and satisfied. Come here and you won't be disappointed for sure.

Family style service. Make you feel like eating at home with delicious dishes. When this restaurant is busy no time to clean finished table but the eating guests are first serviced.

Visited the folks and came to my fav Korean joint.....TWICE. Both times I ate the Yang Bokkum (spicy beef tripe). I just love this dish. I could eat it every week! I also love the Gohp Chang Jungol (beef intestine stew). Most restaurant only serve the large pot of this dish for ~ $30-$35 but Hana has a personal size for $11. It's super flavorful and has plenty of intestines. *DROOOL*

My friends and family has been going here for over 10 years. Food quality is always excellent and price is very reasonable. We pick this little restaurant over other options in Ann Arbor because this place offers true home style cooking, where the couple/owner makes everything and alot of their produce comes from their 5 acre family farm.

A really good hidden Korean restaurant. You won't be disappointed. It's really worth driving up and finding this little restaurant, what I like to think of as a dive Korean place. It's been around forever. It is like how Dalat's first location was. I found out about this place because my friend was studying here from Korea. He loved it. Everything I have eaten here was great. The chop jae was really good, clear noodles with vegetables and bits of meat. Good bulgogi, bi bim bop. Good food!

I'm not sure if i came here on the wrong day. Wanted to like this place, but for me, it fell short. I knew to not expect ambiance, but it really was a bit strange and unwelcoming. The soon do boo (spicey seafood soup) was edible, but not good. The kaibee, tasted fine but just lacked something. Worst of all, the side dishes just felt tired and un fresh. It will be hard to convince myself to come back when there are much better options 10 minutes away in ann arbor.

all of a sudden their portions seem to be half of the usual size i am served at this restaurant............. and FYI i am a regular here

I was very proud of myself, because for once, I ordered the best dish of the night! Score one for the indecisive girl! So the spicy pork bokkum was super yummy and everyone was very excited about it. The bi bim bop came in a pretty large and full bowl, and tasted good, not superb. There was much talk about ordering the chicken wings, which I thought were just ok. The sauce that was drizzled on them was tasty, but I really couldn't figure out what the big deal was. Long story short: Good, authentic Korean food. If you're driving at night, be forewarned: The sign is not lit at all, look for a somewhat shady, former Waffle House building.

first of all let me say that this is not a vegetarian friendly restaurant. i am not a vegetarian but i attended with 3 friends and two are veg. and one eats meat as well. we ordered two dishes that were supposed to be vegetarian. its always the same waitress the handful of times that ive eaten here, i believe its family operated, and she is INTENSE. she is quite scary in fact. well the dishes arrived and one of the veg. ones was covered in meat. when my friend informed them that she didnt eat meat, the waitress took my other friends chopsticks out of his hand and picked all the meat off my first friends dish, as if that now made it vegetarian. it still had meat crumbles and juice all over it and my friend looked really sad. it was quite awkward. but other than that, the times i have been there the food has been good, traditional korean. you should also probably expect to be the only people in there, because its really small and never seems to get crowded.

Hands down best Korean food I've ever had. Staff was very friendly. From the outside it doesn't look like much but inside was clean and cozy. Only thing I would change is how quiet the place was. My son kept listening to everyones conversation around us. They had music playing but you could barely hear it. I still give it 5 stars tho cause once my food came I forgot all about that

Best jap chae in Michigan. You can tell they put love in thier food it's always awesome. Hana has been there forever and there is a reason why.

  • CV C.

Oh my! Do not be fooled by its appearance! It's not fancy and it's half "please-decorate-me", but I will DEFINITELY be coming back. We had the bibimbap and the pork cutlets. How can I explain this... it was worth every bite, worth every penny and worth every mile I drove to it (in reality, I really want to say "it was an oral ecstasy!" -or another very similar word but I'm afraid Yelp will ban me from writing any more reviews-).

    (5)
  • Benjamin T.

The food is incredible and the staff is quick and friendly. Try the spicy pork. Also, they were nice enough to let me order off their lunch menu at 3:30pm (lunch stops at 3).

if you live in ypsi and don't frequent this place you are missing out. we either takeout or eat in for lunch around once a week. have only tried a couple dishes and then we landed on the bokkum (order it spicy, it's not that hot) and have been there since. we have tried to make it at home it's that good. sadly, we can never get it just right which is fine by us because for a quick drive to hana we don't have to get our dishes dirty. the mandu is also perfect and the pickled extras and complimentary tea are worth dining in for. like almost every other restaurant on michigan ave, don't let the outside fool you. there's a reason these places manage to stick around, because they serve delicious food.

  • Marcie K.

Don't judge a book by its cover. This is hands down the best Korean I've had in the area. Very friendly staff and tons of food....I have leftovers and I am stuffed full of goodness. Had the pork belly and kimchi stir fry.

  • Brian V.

Consistently good food using housemade ingredients. The bulgogi is good, the pork bokkum is phenomenal - I just wish there was a higher pork/onion/etc. to rice ratio. The banchan is delicious, with really tasty kimchi.

Like everyone else I was initially deterred by the appearance of the restaurant but decided to go because of the great reviews. I'm so glad I went because it was the BEST Korean food I have ever had at a restaurant. My mother is Korean and she and my grandma make amazing Korean food so I'm a little spoiled when it comes to Korean food and I usually don't go out for Korean but I'm so glad I did. I had the bi bim bap and my boyfriend had the chop chae and it was delicious. I can't wait to go back and try some more of there stuff now that I know what they bring to the table. The service was great and the food came out super fast. We were the only ones there so that might have had some influence on it but I was still impressed. It was also a huge portion for a really reasonable price. It was about $27 with the 20% tip.

  • Desi S.

I took off one star because when you pull up it doesn't seem that great of a place. Also it doesn't really have the korean barbeque at the table which doesn't really bother me. The food was tasty and flavorful. The staff was warm and accommodating. I'm glad I drove the hour to sample it. I would be back.

  • Jason C.

Time for updated review... their food is still great; the flavors are still there, as well as the family service.... Couple of changes over the years though.... - they added few more dishes to the menu - the portion size has been downsized.... - the price has gone up on lot of their dishes, especially the bokkum dishes (stir-fried items) Even with the portion sizes been reduced, you still get your moneys worth with all the home made banchans.

The deserted look of this placed scared me off for quite awhile. I was stupid. I know better now. This place deserves your business. Very nice banchan. Tasty bibimbop. The bulgogi and kalbi well seasoned and happy. Chap chae is especially good here. The mandu is crispy and well filled. Soups are warm, hearty and filling. It feels like Korean home cooking to a non Korean girl who has no claims on any real expertise. No complaints on the food at all though. Good portions, fair prices. The outside is not terribly inviting, inside is fairly basic but filled with a feeling of a family run business. Friendly people, not always horribly efficient. Occasionally harried but only because of the small staff. If you are here when it is slow all will run well, during a rush you will have to be a bit patient. Hidden on the Michigan Ave. trail on the way from Ypsi and heading towards the far side of Canton, it is not easily accessible but worth the trek. Happy.

Very good family style Korean food. The small side dishes are extremely tasteful. Nice service.

Easily the best Korean food (or possibly even best food) in the A2/Ypsi area.

  • Sam G.

I'm fairly certain this place has the best ban chan in Michigan. All those little appetizer side dishes were fresh, carefully fermented, sweet, sour, spicy, and amazing. The chap chae was smokey, meaty (more by taste than flesh content), and utterly chewable. The tofu, pork, and kimchi soup? Flavorful and sating. Service was friendly, efficient, and unobtrusive. The restaurant was dead quiet (right before close on a Tuesday night), which made conversation sound booming and intrusive. But it's good practice for my boisterous self to use my (shhhh) inside voices. The only way this place could get better is if they had clam soup and/or baby octopus dumplings. Then I'd feel as though I had little reason (food wise) to go back to Seoul.

I'd gotten takeout from Hana a handful of times, but last night was the first time I ate in. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the exterior is a bit off-putting, but once you're inside it's fine. It wasn't very busy, so we had very attentive service. Loved the banchan, and the food was tasty and abundant. Our waitress even chased us outside after my boyfriend foolishly forgot his leftovers on the table. (I feel I should also take a moment to point out that he is a human garbage disposal and NEVER has leftovers, so you know the portion sizes were generous). We will definitely be back.

  • Alisa O.

I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said about this place. The food is delicious, and the Spicy BBQ Pork will take your mouth on a burning, delicious trip. Well priced for the portions, and the service was quick and friendly. Five stars to this place.

My husband and I went here today for Valentine's Day! :D we ordered the Spicy Squid Bokkum, Beef Bim Bim Bop and their Kalbi Korean Barbecue. The Bokkum dish we had was delicious! We loved the taste of the sauce and the texture of the squid. The beef in the Bim Bim Bop was really tender. I didn't like the sesame oil taste to the bean sprouts and I most likely wouldn't order this dish again, but the dish itself was good and others would probably like this rendition. The Kalbi wasn't as tender as I would have liked it to be but the flavor was super tasty. Overall, the service was really friendly and the atmosphere felt homey. This place is closer to home than our original Korean place, but we did like the place and would most likely return and the prices are very reasonable for their authenticity.

I visited here for the first time yesterday...review..AWESOME! I used to live in New York, lots of great Korean food available. But in Michigan, very hard to find something even close to what you can get there. This is by far the best I've had in Michigan! This place is truly a little gem!

  • Chris Y.

The restaurant looks somewhat run-down on the outside, however the exterior is not a good indicator of what the restaurant is like on the inside. It's small, but the decor is simple and provides a very nice atmosphere. I had the Ochingo Bokkum, which was squid covered in spicy chili and garlic sauce. The squid was slightly overcooked, however the meal was still very delicious. We were also offered a bowl of rice and plenty of sides along with our meal. I was also offered an extra bowl of rice since I finished my first - fantastic since I know some restaurants that charge extra for that. Service was lovely and it was overall a great experience. Definitely recommend it to anybody in the area looking for some delicious Korean food!

I wanted to like this place more given the reviews. I think I will try it again and see about ordering another dish, but I have to say that I was disappointed in the tofu bibimbop. The portion was ample, but the vegetables included were simply spinach, sprouts, and I believe cucumber. I wish there had been carrots, daikon, or mushrooms or something else to add some color and zing. Also, it would have been great if there was a dolsot option given I love crunchy rice in a hot stone bowl, but alas, no. I do have to say that the waitress was very friendly and the service was good. So, worth trying again sometime.

I ordered the beep n bop beef togo. Not a very fancy Restuarant but hole in the walls are usually very good places to eat. So for $10+ I was surprised when I opened the bag at home how large the portion was and it even included two sides of Kimchee. I was definitely satisfied and would order from here again. The beep n bop was delicious and ingredients are fresh.

No frills location, but great food!!! I had the Kalbi and shared the Bibimbap with my wife...and really enjoyed it. I will definitely come back when I'm in town.

This place was really fantastic. The Banchan ( I think it is called that) is SO incredible. When you order food, they bring out all these small side-dishes of different appetizers like pickled potatoes, kim chi, pickled radish, sweet noodles, etc. And they keep bringing them out! The soups and rice dishes are to die for as well. Very fresh with great service. The portions are pretty large and in combination with the constant banchan (appetizer -side dishes) I always go home with another meal to go. One of the best Korean places around!

This was my first time trying Korean food. Always wanted try Kim chi, love it. I had Chap Chae-potato noodle with vegetables. I also fried rice and radish & squid dish. Everything was Delicious.

  • Jakub B.

As others mentioned, this place is in a 'unique' area on Michigan ave. But basically it is what is commonly know as a 'hole in the ground' gem. Doesn't look like much, but once you get past the look, the food is priced just right and even more delicious. I enjoy my Korean food, and have been here frequently, most often if I recall having the Bibimbap and Kimchi (side dish). To sum it up, wonderful Korean restaurant, low prices and great authentic food.

Great traditional korean food, best I've had in the area for sure! Very friendly staff and a nice homey atmosphere, would definitely come back. We had the pork bulgolgi (which is pork chop, not just slices) and the jap chae, definitely recommend the jap chae.

  • Emma C.

Absolute favorite restaurant! Never a bad meal, all authentic. Wonderful staff, still very attentive even when busy. Menu is limited but it's fine because we know it'll be the best around. Only other place we would probably go to is New Seoul Gardens in Southfield but only if we happened to be out that way. There have been many places opening the past year or two that say Korean food on their signs, but when we order a dish it's always a major let down. It's not the fanciest place but it's comfortable and does what it should do better than anywhere else. We're very lucky to have this place in our area.

I dig a mellow authentic restaurant and this is it. I adore korean food and my bee bim bap, complimentary side dishes especially the kimchee, and tea were flavorful. This is the best korean food in Michigan, better than New Seoul Garden in Southfield.

Went to Hana last night wanting try try a place I hadn't been before although I've been aware of this place since the mid-80's when I was at EMU. Got there around 6:30 and the place was pretty busy. There was only one person taking care of the entire restaurant which seemed a bit odd in the middle of dinner rush. It took a couple of minutes to get seated as the table we were shown needed to be wiped down first. We got our menus and it took quite a while to take our order. I don't blame the server as she was completely overwhelmed being alone. I ordered pork bukoki and the other person ordered chopjae(sp?). While we were waiting for our food two more ladies came out of the back to finally help the one overworked server. The food came to our table and was excellent! Both dishes were quite tasty as were the side dishes. I was very satified with my pork dish and was nicely full by the end. I guess my only criticism of the place was the service, which was slow, and the empty tables that were not bussed and dirty. Again, a result of the other ladies not being on the floor during dinner rush. Also, and this might being a bit nit picky but I like ice in my water, which they did not put in the glass. Food quality was great but service was lacking.

This place is amazing. It's a hidden gem in a rougher area and is well worth the drive. I would have never bothered stopping here if it wasn't for a co-worker who told me about it several years ago. Since then, my family and I try to go every month or so. The kalbi, tonkatsu (with tangy bbq drizzle), and bulgogi are the best in Washtenaw County by far. Top notch food with absolutely no aesthetic inside (but that's okay). Holy chicken bokkum, my new favorite! Ask for it extra spicy (still not that spicy).

  • Ryan S.

The neighborhood is so depressed and the restaurant itself is so barren you half expect to see pictures of the Kims on the wall... but man oh man this place is a gem. After many samplings of the chapchae and bokkum offerings, I finally acquiesced to my dining companion and joined her with a be bim bap. The only thing I clearly remember about it was looking up from an empty bowl, feeling entirely too stuffed. Now I know why it's the only thing she gets; I might be the same way now, too.
