It will be difficult for me to go get a hamburger from anywhere else after trying their 1/4 pounder!

My family stopped by today and had fun. The food was very good. The kids meals came in little boxes shaped like convertables. The kids loved them....after our meal, the owner came out and chatted with us for a couple minutes...then he came out with a couple of free shakes for our girls...they a pretty young so they may forget today...but I will not. Thanks for a very memorable experience...we will be back.

Delicious burgers and shakes. Friendly service. The kids loved that their meals came in car shaped boxes. Great feel of the 50s. Highly recommend it!! Much better than McDonalds and it's locally owned.

This landmark drive up has served the Ypsi area since the 50's. I had not been happy with the quality of their cooking and the food. Hence, I stayed away for years. About six months ago I noticed the sign advertsing a wing ding special dinner for $19.99. Consisting of 18 wings, family size frys and a large cole slaw. I caved last night. The wings were excellent! Hot, crispy, non-greasy. The coleslaw was of the creamy variety, but not sweet. The frys were hot and just right. Although, almost too salty for me. But, all was very tasty. There was enough food for three to four people. The Chick has redeemed themselves to me with this one dinner. I'll be back for another dinner and will test the other menu items.

Food was not good. I tried chicken and it was not on par with KFC. I tried a burger with sweet potato fries and both were sub par. The fish sandwich was actually ok, but overall I was disappointed

I am 57 and remember my big sister taking me here as a kid! And nothing much has changed since then. I here that they have good chicken, fries and onion rings but I always get the footlong chili dog. They are the best around. Their shakes don't even compare to the fake stuff out there. You get real strawberries in a strawberry shake. You never wait long and as someone said us locals call ahead. When the weather is nice it is a good spot to sit in your car and eat. This place has outlasted every other restaurant around. When in Ypsilanti or Willow Run it is a must stop!

Got a hot dog and polish that were both good! Faded signs hearken back to an earlier era. This place reminds me of Clyde's over the big bridge up north. This is a dying breed of establishment that would be a shame to pass up. Stop in. Plus Corner brewery is right around the corner...

Now you go here for a specific experience, nostalgic for some, novel for others, the same way you make that 3 or 4 or 20 year trek to the Ford Wyoming drive in (and in a perfect world the Chick Inn would be located in the center of that drive in). I used to call The Ford just to listen to the showtimes (Lethal Weapon 3 showing at 10 PM and 3 AM) You get a burger, you get onion rings, you get a shake. I get a patty melt, onion rings and a peanut butter milkshake - which somehow both never overcomes the elemental wrongness of the concept and is somehow amazingly delicious anyhow. You play The Gories 'Chick Inn' while you're eating...but just once...you don't want to turn this into an overly self-conscious themed visit. The word 'Quantity' on their outdoor menu has been misspelled 'Quanity' for 30 years. I smile everytime I see it. I have never ordered a Hammy Sammy but it sounds like fun. You realize the scarcity of these places is not due to a drop off in quality food but the drop off in comfort and coolness of cars. Go. Do some damage to yourself. You'll play past it.

One thing I'll never understand is the obsession with making chocolate shakes/malts by adding Hershey's syrup to vanilla shakes instead of just *using chocolate ice cream in the first place.* Do people really prefer Hershey-flavored shakes? Ugh. Most places will at least make one with chocolate ice cream if you ask, but not here :-( Which leads me to believe that they've either just got a vanilla soft-serve machine in there or some sort of "milkshake mix" slurry that they use. (Ditto to using soft serve instead of hard ice cream. The texture is so much worse.) Either way... the milkshakes are just not that good. They seem to get a lot of credit because they have unique flavors, but unique flavors shouldn't trump quality. I've heard the rest of the food isn't bad but it's pretty normal drive in/diner fare, there's really no special reason to go here if not for the shakes. Serious bummer, too, since we live super close.

A throwback to the old days and a gem in Ypsilanti. Came here recently and had the wings (pretty good, your "coney island" type wings), chili cheese curly fries (good but the chili is too sweet for my liking), and steak hoagie (real good, one of the better hoagies in the city of Ypsilanti). My number one recommendation would be the milkshakes (i had a strawberry and pineapple one), they are A1 and you can mix and match flavors. The only thing i will say is that the food here can be high and add up real quickly. Other than that, this is to me the premier DriveIn restaurant.

I hate to write this, but the shakes are no longer the same. They don't taste the same at all. Not a single strawberry clogged my straw. I'm not sure what you changed, but you need to go back to the old way. You have been my go-to place for the best shakes in the area. Change the shake back and I will change my rating.

PROS: We have been the happy recipients of Chick Inn's delicious vittles for many, many years. My personal fav: Paul Bunyon Burger. Shakes & malts bring back memories of days gone by. Kids meals come in cute cardboard 1950s era cars. Hot dogs are good & served old style in paper wrappers. CONS: Fries & coleslaw...meh

Look, I was totally skeptical. It's a crummy drive-in. It's kind of dated. It's name is "Chick Inn". WTF?! But I was told to go and try it out. And it. was. great! I sat inside because I didn't want that fresh-burger-smell overpowering my new-car-smell. And I had a great time. The waitress was super friendly, made great recommendations on shakes and I really enjoyed it. The lettuce on the burger was crisp (being a snobby Northeasterner, I got the smaller burger because I can no longer Midwestern portions). If this place had vegan-chickpea burgers, it might be so quaint that it would qualify as hipster. Let's pray that doesn't happen because as the reviews note, it's great for families... And Northeasterners visiting family. As you can see in my profile (and tell from the text), I'm not in Ypsi anymore and I only make it back once every few months. Next time I'm back, I'm going to this god forsaken, wonderful place. Pro tip: There are many more flavors than on the menu. Ask your carhop for more info!

Gross American cheese on cold chili cheese dog. The strawberry shake was good. I'll just stick to Bills or Kluck's.

Had a quick dinner here the other night. Had a burger, Reese's shake and mushrooms. Over all the food is good. The burger was fresh and seasoned. Considering the price, I was surprised at the good flavor of the burger. I didn't care for the breading on the mushrooms and won't be getting them again. The service was quick and friendly. I would recommend to anyone!

  • Dave T.

The service was good and quick. The prices were low for the amount of food you get. Probably the best cheesesteak I've had in a long time. The strawberry shake was excellent, thick and had chunks of real fruit. This place is worth the drive and I will find my way back here, hopefully on a cruise night.

I've only tried the shakes. Stop here for shakes! Chick-In not only has a cute name but the service is fast and friendly too. It's one of those old fashion places where they come out to your car to get your order and bring out your food. So it's not a good shake but it's a fun stop too

Chick-Inn is a local institution with a loyal customer base. About six years ago there was a testimony to that loyalty. The family was hit with a road construction project from hell. It was difficult to get to it. Yet, the regulars came. I decided to take my grandson for a great hamburger, old fashioned fries and a real milk shake. It took 40 minutes for us to figure out how to get to it but we got mad at the city, not Chick-Inn. The big burger with the family's special sauce and the shake was something he will never forget. I cannot eat that sort of Americana food anymore but I'll tell you this is an old school drive-in eatery. For several years, when you could no longer get a real seafood platter for a reasonable price, we got it at Chick-Inn! What this Dive-Inn is known for are the real milk shakes, old fashioned American style french fries, the big hamburger, and the side baskets of fried mushrooms & real onion rings. Yes, some regulars go for the chicken. Most locals call their orders ahead and do not have to wait long for it. Unlike, my chain restaurant experience, I cannot recall ever getting the wrong order, nor did the entire staff ever gridlock because we asked for our our fries or onion rings to be fried longer or a burger to have no pickles. When nearly every chain eatery has come & long gone from nearby Michigan Ave and Ecorse Road (Churches, Ponderosa, Lee's, Big Boy, etc), Chick-Inn remains, retro art sign & all! Its no Ann Arbor vegan or hypochondriac's transfat free deli but the customer base isn't the arts & sushi squad. They are the midwestern working "getter done" crowd & they like Chick-Inn just fine, thank you

My boyfriend and I were looking to do something different from a sit down dinner at a boring local chain restaurant. Where we ended up was a sweet surprise: Footlong coney + Wing Ding dinner + onion rings + 2 medium shakes = $20.36 Sitting in the car + listening to christmas music + great food = priceless. We'll definitely be back!

  • Tara T.

I think the Chick Inn may have gotten a new owner in the past few years. The music has changed from oldies to pop radio or country and the food isn't as good as it used to me. Their cole slaw used to put all other cole slaw to shame. Call your order in ahead of time and it will be ready for you when you get there. No bathroom and no inside seating, this is a true carhop establishment. The things I DO still recommend: (and yes...it IS still worth the drive just for the experience) -Chocolate Peanut Butter milkshake- Absolutely the BEST shake on the planet...better than Culver's -French Fries-perfectly brown, but not too dark, taste is superb

Good place to go for yummy, greasy American food! I am a huge fan of the fried chicken dinner. The regular fries aren't very good so I suggest upgrading to the curly fries. The service is always friendly and they have always gotten our order right. Definitely a fun drive-in to visit. :-)

Went here after discovering it on Yelp--I had never seen it before though I live in Ypsi. Awesome drive-in, I wonder how old it is. Looks like all the original signage is still there. Everything on the menu is spelled wrong. Boyfriend got a patty melt that was very delicious--I was jealous of his food. I got a footlong hotdog with chili sauce and onions, which was delish. I thought the chili sauce was really good actually, tasted homemade to me. Or maybe I just think that because the menu said it was homemade. Fries were average, greasy. What I really came for, and which was just as amazing as the previous folks have said, was the banana milkshake. Mmmmm. Had it two hours ago and am already wanting another. They could be dangerous if I lived in those parts.

The Gorie's have a song about the chick inn. Decent grub, good milkshakes, but hell, who doesn't go for the atmosphere? I yearn for Ypsi sometimes.

  • Todd N.

I wanted to like this place more than I did. Food was more expensive than it should have been for the amount you got. The place was in disrepair, but all that was sort of minor compared to the pregnant car hop that announced to our entire family that she was having a bad day, since she just found out her boyfriend that get her knocked up also got another girl knocked up too. Really? TMI. Shape up your act, clean a little, replace a couple of burned out light bulbs and get 3-4 stars.

  • Kiarash Z.

I was unimpressed by the special sauce on my burger, and the patty was a bit wimpy, but the overall size of the thing made it OK. The shakes, on the other hand, are pure magic. I had a chocolate malt, and my co-pilot had a strawberry shake. Both were amazing. I should have gone with a large, because I almost cried when my medium ran dry.

My friends and I were driving aimlessly around town one day lonnnng ago and happened upon the Chick Inn. The chocolate/strawberry shake is the best shake that I have EVER had in my entire life. I guess it's a mixed blessing that it's now 5 hours away from me, because I would be there all the time gobbling down shakes and cheesy fries. One of the few remaining authentic drive-inns, definitely worth the trip...possibly even worth a 5 hour drive, road trip anyone?

  • Jake H.

I first discovered the Chick Inn in college when my then-girlfriend recommended it. I instantly fell in love -- with the Chick Inn, at least. The food isn't haute cuisine and the location is far from beautiful, but this drive-in is still wonderful. Shakes and malts are to die for. Burgers, chicken, and fries are all served in huge portions, piping hot and perfectly greasy. And how can you beat the ambiance of an old-fashioned drive-in with car hops who come out to deliver your meal? It's not the best food in the area, but it may be the most fun.

  • Chub M.

The peanut butter/chocolate shake is one of the best I've ever had. Enough to give this amazing time warp of a place 5 stars. Don't remember any of the other food, but who cares. It was all about the shake.

This is a strange twilight zone kind of surreal experience that may never leave you the same... It's kinda fun for a funny date with the wifey, but that's about it. Didn't try the fabled milk shake, but had a broad sampling of food. The burger was a bit dry and flavorless, the chili cheese fries were indescribable disaster. Eveything just tasted artificial and canned with an extra helping of grease. I think there are many other places to get a junk food fix nearby, that it's hard to justify this place except for the kitch.

No way this place will ever compete with Casey's for their hand cut, beer battered onion rings. THOSE are the best in Washtenaw County! That said, thank goodness for Chick Inn. Sometimes something sad happens in your life and you do not feel like eating and yummy junk is the only thing keeping you functioning. This was one of those nights- a balmy, sweet summer night. Windows open. Chick Inn a-callin.' I craved a chili dog or 2 and Bill's was closed for the night. Chick Inn is about equal in quality to Bill's (except no home made root beer- but their shake makes up for that!). So, 2 dogs w/homemade chili, onions, mustard and a side of curly fries split with my man, who ordered a sloppy joe (tasty little snack- up to any Jr High School's standard, he says- which is 'good!') and a grilled cheese deluxe (w/lettuce, notional tomato and mayo) which he says was quite fine despite its simplicity. The best thing about our "meal" was the home made peanut butter malt with extra added malted powder, which was nirrrvannnaaaa!! Can't sprinkle enough stars out about their shakes/malts. Rich, thick, you probably should share it. All for $16- we gave our friendly and fast car hop a $4 tip. You simply can. not. beat. the atmosphere here. You go back in time. The mid-century modern building, fake pine trees (why not fake palm trees? That would be funner- I mean, really. If you're gonna go fake, may as well go all the way to tropical!), neon, the sign. Super cool just to sit there and eat your yummy junk dinner proudly in public. The lady next to us ordered the cheese steak 'hoggie' (hoagie) and that sounded good for next time. We sadly saw a SYSCO canister ('strawberries'- surely notional) in the window, so yeah, you're not getting the 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' locally-sourced, home made experience here, exactly. But it is what it is. At least you didn't have to cook it. This is NOT A & W!!

When composing a review, sometimes I start off from the it-is-what-it-is perspective. And for a drive-in, the Chick-Inn is exactly what I want it to be. I have to admit that I'm a little sentimental about this place - I had a first date here with my longtime partner, and I also happen to love the Gories. But even before that date, I absolutely loved coming here in the summertime. Kluck's is another nearby drive-in, but the Chick-Inn is far superior in my estimation. Sure, I usually go for some fried stuff, and that's all pretty good (and pretty hard to mess up). The best thing here for me though, as others have mentioned, are the milkshakes. I only get shakes a few times a year, but when I do, I like them thick and tasty, preferably from the Chick-Inn.

  • Anya P.

Now I'm confused. While I can't hold myself back from loving the once loved decor, the food here is nothing to rant about. When looking for reviews of good places to eat, I did not expect the aChick-Inn to be so close to the top. Granted the milk shakes are really good, that's about it. Hot dogs: ok. Fries: pretty good. Chicken: alright. Nothing that denotes a top rating. It's good, and it's fun, but it's not as good as it gets.

It seems a lot of my reviews skew toward nostalgia-related places. Hey, I'm not that old. I just happened to think that some of the places who have been doing this stuff for a long time tend to get it right generally. Chick Inn was on the list this weekend. Despite the sad sack car hop who was probably having a bad day, the service was prompt and the food was hot. I got onion rings and a mini burger. At $1.85, the mini burger was probably a 1/4 pound patty on a sesame seed bun, with ketchup, mustard and pickles. It was simple and delicious, and a lot bigger than a standard fast food burger. They did screw up my pineapple shake for peanut butter one, but I was willing to let it slide. Plus I didn't want to make the car hop feel worse. Anyway, the peanut butter shake was great, very rich. But it can't compare with a pineapple shake. You want a delicious summertime treat? Hop into the car and head to Chick Inn for pineapple shakes and an order of onion rings. Seriously the best onion rings in Washtenaw County.

What a classic, nostalgic, kitschy little drive-in. Great hot dogs and curb service. Established in 1953, the road sign has a neon light with the phone number beginning with HU instead of numbers...

I come here for their fabulous smoothies and decently priced food. I would recommend their peanut butter or banana smoothies. Their BLTs and hamburgers are great for the area.
