Cheap and decent breakfast. Takes only cash. Best 4th meal as far as restaurants downriver go.

My wife and I use to go here once in a while back in 2011-2012.. the food was less than average and was getting worse. It finally got to the point where we agreed that it stunk... By some fortune my wife went there early 2014 and said that they have new owners and perhaps we should give it another shot... I agreed, low and behold they have done a complete flip on this place ... the food is ready really quick and it is very tasty ... waitresses are friendly and always checking to see if everything is ok or if a refill is needed...Definitely give this place a try .. you wont be disappointed...

Let me first preface by saying this review is written after only one visit. However, it was an exceptional visit for a Coney Island. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly and told to pick a place. We picked a booth right by the window because my son loves to watch the cars on Eureka Rd. Menus, water and a booster seat were promptly brought, as were the daily specials, by a very cheerful, friendly while still helpful waitress. I got the fish and chips, which came with average fries and a DELICIOUS "chicken gumbo" soup. The fish and hips were above average, which is saying something for a Coney Island around these parts. An order of mozz sticks was just reheated frozen sticks, but my 2 year old didn't seem to mind. Food came out FAST and HOT, also a good sign. Finally, they gave my son free ice cream, which was the icing on the ale, as it were. Great service, solid food. What more can you ask for from a Coney Island?

The breakfast is a good deal and has always been good. I love their lemon rice soup! It's absolutely delicious!

The Downriver Coney Island is a love-or-hate kind of place. There is little-to-no atmosphere, the food is greasy, it is often loud, and you're better off "holding it in" than attempting to use their restrooms. I love it! This is not the kind of place you want to go to for fine dining. This is more of a place you go to have a cheap meal with friends. Once there, you build memories of this place by being with your friends and having a good time. This place is not for everyone. All that said, here is my humble opinion of the food: Coneys - 6/10: It is an adequate coney dog that will not disappoint! Chili cheese fries - 7/10: If you like this artery-clogging coney joint fare, these won't let you down! Fried mushrooms - 7/10: They are not the best fried mushrooms I've ever had, but for the price, they're good and you get a lot. Burgers - 5/10: It is hard to make a bad burger, and this place is no exception. Lemon rice soup - 8/10: I don't know how they make it, but I hope they never change the recipe. I love getting a bowl of this. Breakfasts - 7/10: Not. Too. Shabby. I am always surprised when I get a breakfast from these guys! It is usually pretty good (especially the bacon). House salad - 3/10: It's just a bunch of lettuce with a few cucumbers, and a side packet of dressing. It's not bad, but as flavor goes, there is nothing of substance. The food is on par with a coney joint/diner/greasy spoon, and the atmosphere is created by you and your friends. Service is great! Ask for Suzie! The food comes out very quickly, so be on your toes! This place is nothing special, other than it is a Downriver institution, which kind of makes it special.

The food here is passable but not memorable. They serve a decent breakfast and the open faced sandwiches are generally good and filling. The coney dogs are ok at best. I go elsewhere for coneys. The real attraction here is the floor show in the wee hours. It is a pretty wild crowd who comes in here so anything and everything can happen and usually does. One night I looked up from my menu only to see a diner 2 booths away shouting expletives at me. Another night a hooker wandered in, unusual for Southgate but she propositioned several customers so it was fairly obvious. She sat down and amused herself by making the place rumble with her thunderous flatulance. The place looks pretty quiet before midnight but if you want some ok food and are ready for anything, by all means visit here during bar rush.

food was not good at all. the only hot and edible item were the fries. my grilled cheese was cold? and the cheese barely melted. my coworkers meatloaf was all salt flavored with bland brown gravy. we will not go back. dirty restaurant and unfriendly staff.
