Box Bar Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

The only reason this place is even still in business is because it is lucky enough to be in downtown Plymouth, and automatically gets a foot traffic from all the crowds Kellogg park attracts for various events. From the time me and my family walked in the door to the time we left, Box Bar failed in every possible way. The hostesses didn't seem to know how to greet us. It was like I had to request a seat and tell her how many. She sat me, my wife, my two kids, including a one year old who didn't need that steak knife put in front of her, thanks. Or the menu that is more like a crappy binder found at the bottom of a gym locker. The booth seat was covered in duct tape, and the shelf thingy holding the wine and beer menu's were falling apart. The server appeared to be completely untrained. I ordered a water and never once got a refill. Once we got our food we didn't see the server for quite a while. I really wanted to leave. They had a line waiting to be seated. You think they would make an attempt to get a table that is eager to pay and leave out of there. The staff was totally clueless. The food was pretty terrible. Salmon was overcooked. Dill sauce that came with it was a joke. Mashed potatoes tasted like some kind of crap you get out of a box, but worse, I assume they were a couple days old. Fries were undercooked and onion rings were overcooked. How do you mess than one up? TWO busboys/food runners walked past empty handed, while empty plates sat on the end of our table, and both of them looked right at them and kept walking. Before leaving I took my 4 year old son to the bathroom. It was pretty disgusting. They had a single air dryer, no paper towels. Kids need the towels!

The location and outdoor seating is great but the food is just ok. Basically glorified bar food.

Lot's of beer and food choices!

I immediately fell in love with this place last night as a first timer. The beers... OMG the beers!!!! This place has a beautiful variety of beers to choose from. It was almost overwhelming, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Our bartender, he was just fantastic so I didn't experience any bad service (or waitresses). I had Bells Winter Ale on tap and then tried a Hitachino white (Japanese beer), ordered the pasta primavera and added the chocolate fountain fondue for $1 more. Very large portion, quite delicious. I was pleased with everything I experienced last night. Would be a regular if I lived closer.

Dirty, especially the restrooms. The place seems like it's falling apart -- duct tape on seats, wobbly tables, etc. Food quality is pretty poor. Chili and bread bowl was 10% cold chili and 90% stale bread. Burgers are tiny with cheap, canned condiments. Beer selection is fantastic, but I definitely won't eat here again.

When one goes to a bar that serves over 700 types of beers, I expect the servers to know about the types of beers. The servers aren't even at a legal drinking age and they look at you so confused if you ask them about a certain kind of beer. Very disappointing. The owner needs to get these servers into a training program.

DISCLAIMER: (The Box Bar only receives 2 stars for their good beer selection) Okay, this place has really turned sour. I recall the good ol days many years ago when the box was hole in the wall with terrific hamburgers and other decent bar food. Now its nothing more than overpriced GFS frozen foods with flags hanging from the rafters. My last and final visit to the Box was a while ago. Staff wasn't inept, menu was awful. I'd rather head down the street to Jimmy Johns.

I love this place. Good beer selection, and their Pretzels are AWESOME. Great for a hot day. Especially if there's a fair being held across the street in the park. :-)

To sum it up, if you can afford it, go down the street to Comparis; if you can't, go somewhere else (Panera) or don't eat and save your money so you can go to Comparis. How do I begin? No, wait. How do people go to this place? I've got to be honest, it's quite run down looking. We were sat in a booth that looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in ages. My seat had a large rip in it and was quite worn. The floor was surprisingly dirty for a deserted place. My friend and I were one of maybe two or three other parties, but service was very, very slow. One simple $5 dish took over twenty minutes to cook, and the waitress spent the majority of her time talking with her coworkers. She started to give me some attitude about their being a policy requiring all customers to purchase an entrée: completely ridiculous. Even Subway doesn't do that, and their food is MUCH better and service is lightening-fast compared to the Box Bar. My friend was the only one to order a dish, and it was certainly nothing to phone home about much less Instagram. If I were starving, I'd go somewhere else. Prices are low, but you get what you pay for...or at least think you do, but then you end up disappointed. I wish someone would recognize this place's revenue-generating potential and reinvent it. Comparis opened years and years ago, but it's great, reasonably priced, and has been so successful they opened two more restaurants to flank it.

terrible burger, terrible ripped up seat cushions , not sure how they are still in business

  • Dave T.

This was the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. My dinner came before my drinks. They forgot salads. They never refilled our water once. Never mentioned why we waited twenty minutes for our drinks and they didn't come. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I should have know when we walked in on a Saturday night and there were tables open that there was a reason.

  • Ani B.

I was not impressed. Met a friend and that's why i ended up here. Got the Chef's salad. Lettuce is iceberg, really hoping for higher quality romaine. Cheese on top was common, tasteless colby or mild cheddar. Sharp cheddar would have been better. It was quite large, so much so it was impossible to finish, thus wasting some of my money. Limited menu, and nothing vegetarian. Will not go back.

  • Rita R.

Enjoyed the atmosphere. Upscale bar. I suppose if the beer is the important part of your evening, you might be pleased. I was rather surprised to find that the burger seemed smaller than McDonald's quarter pounder and had little flavor. It was not at all the burger you would expect from a good bar. Companion had baked potato which was small and overcooked. Perhaps their entrée meals are better. But to call this a burger bar is a misrepresentation.

  • Liz W.

I never get the oohing and ahhing over the burgers here. They are decently good but nothing compared to some of the shining star bars and restaurants I visit in the area. If you like beer though this could be your place. They claim to have 600 varieties plus 40 draughts. Not cheap priced but if you like a good selection it works, if you are looking for a garden variety domestic you will be overcharged for the lameness of your palette apparently. The chili I had one afternoon was good as was a cheese soup. Other than that nothing has wowed me ever. Service is very bad. Slow, inattentive and just not overly friendly. It is definitely a bar but if you choose to serve food and actually have waitresses then I expect some service. I actually had to go to the bar myself to get a needed second drink, ok but I had a server that expected a tip right? I am by no means a snob nor are my expectations high, I do dislike the general attitude of hey it's a bar what do you expect? Ummm I go to other no frills type bars quite happily and get service and better burgers to boot.

  • Jeff S.

Let me start by saying that the four star rating is mostly for their beer selection. I haven't really tried the food, it alsways seems to be the go to place for some great domestic and import beers. They have all my favorites and there is never a shortage of new beers to try. The prices seem to be a little on the high side but they always have plenty of seating inside and out. My favorite spot is at the bar where the knowledgeable bartenders can guide you through HUNDREDS of selections. Also, keep an eye out for the Box Bar in Scream 4. Their parking lot was just used to film the movie downtown Plymouth and I expect we will be seing the restaurant in the film next April.

I've been here a half dozen times against my will, and have never really been satisfied. I always swear I will not go back, but always end up there again... The food here is not very good. School Cafeteria like nachos, funky un deviened shrimp, aging salads, and boring sandwiches. If you do have to go and eat, save yourself the grief and order the one shiney star: the Baked Roast Beef with Mash Potato thing on top.

  • Josh B.

Truly excellent beer selection.terrible awful service. Went in a with a group of about 10-12 people about an hour and a half before close, every single waitress gave us the death stare plopped down the beer menus and just had atrocious attitudes. If I really wasn't craving a lambic I would have left right then and there. I could understand if we walked in 10 min before closing but seriously just awful awful treatment!!! NEVER AGAIN.

This place is a riddle wrapped inside of a mystery. It has absolutely zero character and a waitstaff that has minimal knowledge of their monstrous bottled beer menu. The food is also just average. However, being the extreme beer geek that I am, I still look forward to my trips here because I think they probably have the best bottled beer selection in Michigan. If there's a place with more, please post it on this forum. It's like going to a motorcycle dealer shopping for a new Ducati and finding none of the sales staff has ever owned anything on two wheels other than a Schwinn bicycle and they couldn't care less that you've noticed the irony. You're just asking for an aneurysm if you start asking questions about the beer. My advice is you need to know all of the answers to your beer questions when you visit the Box Bar because in the five times I've been there, no one was beyond a novice on the subject. I can't wait to go back because they have 95% of the beers that matter.

I discovered this place from a friend of mine that eats here often. Compared to most bars I have been to, Box Bar falls under the radar. I give this place two stars for two reasons: 1) THE BEER- OMG! I do not think there is a bar, restaurant..anything that has a beer selection better than theirs. They have around 500-600 BEERS! WHOA! Beers you have never even heard of! If you want to have a beer tasting night/week/month/year, this is the place to go! 2)Lobster Mac and Cheese- One of the best items on the menu in my opinion. I live no where near Plymouth and I will make the drive just for that plate. I'm sure all the food they serve is store bought and frozen but whatever. ITS THAT GOOD! Other than that, this place sucks. The staff is looks miserable, the bar is COMPLETELY outdated, filthy old carpet and a lot of the booth cushions are patched with duct tape. This place looks so much better on the outside than inside. Box Bar needs a extreme makeover and fast!

    (2)
  • Ashley S.

The outside of this place looks much nicer than the inside. The bar side looks nice, but when they're busy they fill the other side, which looks like a dingy banquet room. Pretty much all the booth seats have duct tape on them. Their menus are printed off in sticky binders. I ordered the blackened salmon, which was okay, but not awesome. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp scampi, which was drowning in a thick creamy sauce. We were both extremely sick the next day and have no intention of going back.

Been going to the box bar for ever, they have always been consistent with a great beer selection, friendly staff with average at best service. The food has always been ok, nothing to right home about.., however tonight topped it off, I ordered a Cesar salad for 8 bucks it's not to bad because its usually so big I take about half home. The salad I received this time was no bigger then a side salad and I still paid 8 bucks.... Not so happy with the box bar tonight.....

  • Maureen P.

Absolutely the worst service and food! Not to mention the place is filthy dirty and seats are falling apart. So what do they do? Put duct tape on them! Unbelievable! The whole place is ran by a bunch of children that stand around doing a lot of nothing! We walk in and stand by the sign that says hostess will seat you. Well about 5 feet from there is some 14 year old standing behind a wooden desk. Think she would walk over to us or even say hello? How many? nope just let us stand there. i finally walked over to her and i dont even think she spoke still. I said we have three. We're not from around there, we have no idea what she's doing. Standing there looking dumb is all she seemed to be capable of.Our server Ericka was rude, never checked on us and wasn't even the one to bring out our food. I watched her and she was just aimlessly walking around the place, stopping at the hostess station to chit chat, etc. And when my 16 year old daughter asked her if anything came on the baked potato, she said she has no clue.Im a good tipper and I seriously wanted to leave her zero! I felt like writing on the bill "you obviously aren't working for tips!" It's almost like one of the requirement's to work there is to be rude and not too bright. it was like Twilight Zone in there. The food was just about un edible. You can't usually screw up something as simple as onion rings, but they were awful! must be buying the cheapest one's they can get their paws on.Never ever again! Such a shame what a great place it could be, such a prime location! Sad.

One star for their beer selection. This place has the potential to be a true gem downtown but it's outclassed by every other restaurant in DTP.

  • Paul N.

very bad service. our server was L. H . it took forever for our drinks to come. When we asked for the pop that should have come with our daughter kid meal. The waitress told us that it doesn't come with the meal.... but we can order one if we like. We told her that it come with the meal and we have to go back and forth with her. We asked her to please go and take a look at the menu. She came back few minutes later and said she will give her one, never said sorry my mistake. As a restaurant owner, I was very disappointed with the server and hope that my wait staff would never do that. The food was so so nothing special.

PLEASE sell your beer on tap in growlers. I can name two off the top of my head that are NOT available for retail purchase -- Oddside from Grand Haven is not being bottled nor is Kuhnhenn in Warren. I will still visit you because you are my testing ground for new beers. I just want some time apart from you to enjoy my tasty beverages on the comfort of my sectional sofa. I know it took you 20+ years to decide on an outdoor patio, but I can't wait that long for you to decide selling growlers would increase business too...

    1. You have to protest the new part and sit only in the old part, that has hamburger puzzles and tacky cat puzzles glued together as artwork on the walls. 2. You have to appreciate that they have extended their menu from 1 page to 15. When I was younger, there was a 30 page beer menu, and 1 page of food. 3. You have to appreciate that they still have "Bubble and Squeak" on the menu. Look it up. 4. The waitstaff always knows me as "Woodpecker Cider chick", even though months will go by and I don't come back often. 5. The burgers are greasy, good, and they will cook them medium rare. 6. When you're feeling really smart, take your friends to the mugs on the wall and see how many historical references you can make while they look at you like you're nuts. 7. Give it a chance. But protest the new, yuppie side.

Came here the other night before touring the Plymouth Ice Show and it was chaos... understandable because our server mentioned the fact that their computers were down at least 1/2 a dozen times. I get it. Shit happens. Not a problem. I will say, despite other reviews, the service was great considering the circumstances. The food: meh, okay. I like lists, join me on this bullet-ed adventure. * Appetizer: Calamari- Was not expecting calamari the size of steak fries. Still tender but that didn't salvage the taste. Very bland and lacked any type of seasoning -2 stars *Meals: Me: Pulled Pork Sandwich- tender and tasty, but nothing to get excited about. 3 stars Boyfriend: Meatball Sandwich- This monstrous biotch came in a soup bread bowl. It tasted good, and I appreciate the 'think outside of the ordinary' thought behind it but when you call something a sandwich... it better be sandwiched between something. There's just something about cheesy, saucy, marinara juices dripping down your arm in glutenous glory. *Cue Tim the Tool Man Taylor Grunt* -3 stars *The Booze: I think it's cool that they have so many beers. But if I'm paying almost $6 for a pint of beer... I'd rather go to the local Metro Detroit Brewery myself and drink a fresh pint from their establishment... for $2 cheaper. Just saying. I don't see myself seeking out to come here unless I'm in the area and want to burn a hole in my pocket on mediocre food and expensive beer.

So I've noted complaints about the service at the Box Bar in previous reviews. Having eaten here a few times, I've always found the service to be mediocre, never terrible, but also never very attentive. One instructive episode for me came during a downpour that occured in the midst of last year's Green Fair. I was playing the role of caboose in a long line of friends. I suddenly found myself inside the Box Bar and watched as the people I knew hugged a woman I did not know. I asked someone I was with what was going on. I was told the woman was pretending to be related to us because the Box Bar was not allowing people to take shelter from the rain. I hugged cousin so and so and made mental note of the Bar's hospitality. Other than that story and the beer selection - which is of no use to me because I do not pay bar prices - not much sticks out about the Box Bar. The burgers are standard, not great. The service is shrug-worthy. The atmosphere is dank but not too dank. All and all, the Box Bar is ok. I will grab a burger to go from here during music in the park, but there are several better options in town.

The food is decent, the beer list has wonderful depth and breadth, though roughly half of the beers on tap are various flavors of Sam Adams (Come on guys, I understand having one or two of their beers on tap but you have like a dozen different Sam Adams beers on tap, be more adventurous on tap please!). The service is decent, though the staff needs better training when it comes to beer knowledge. I have had servers who admit they don't drink beer or know anything about beer. Um, news flash, you are known for a having a large beer list, this is why many people visit, you may not drink beer but you need to have extensive knowledge of beer to better serve your patrons. With that said, I'm here about once a week to sample beers from around the world. Two more words...Chocolate Fountain!

  • Lori H.

This place has the largest beer selection I have ever seen in my entire life. We did not try the food, but the bread soup bowl someone was eating looked amazing. Great service, and no wait at all. Highly recommend if you are a beer fan.

Noticed a review scroll by and I was reminded that I forgot to write my own for this place. I have never eaten here so I can't say squat about the food. But I met people for drinks here several times through the summer and it was a complete failure. Once I sat at the bar and this nutbag bartender kept butting in on a very personal and political discussion with my buddy who works in the medical field. This asshole would not take a hint and just kept butting in and we were trying to stop talking when he was around but it got to the point he was always there and it devolved where I went outside to get away from the dude and left a half drunk beer. Pro Bar tending tip: Avoid political arguments with customers doubly so when you are arguing about a topic in which the customer has a career in and you are a fucking bartender! Other times the service has been very slow and unpleasant. Doesn't matter if you have a giant beer list if you have to beg and plead to get an order taken. Came in one night 45 min to closing and got a bunch of shit from the waitress. We explained we were just going to have a few drinks and she was still pretty bitchy about it. Also all summer long it was hot as fuck in there. How about you fix the A/C eh? My friend occasionally house sits in the area within walking distance and it used to be nice to stroll over for a few drinks but I won't be back any time soon. 2 stars in general but the stump speech spewing bartender brings it home to 1 star for me.

The selection of beer is great but I would never go there for the food. Run of the mill bar food. Not even good bar food. The service is average at best and often seems slow for how empty the bar seems to be. Unless you really need an exotic beer and can't leave Plymouth there are better places.

  • Michael G.

BAD BAD Servie and w/ other much better restaurants w/ in walking distance you should DEF go there instead. Good beer selection but over priced. An over all bad food that I feel was purchased in bulk from GFS than made a 16 yr old line cook

Contrary to most reviews, I did not experience any egregious lapses in service at Box Bar. The young hostess was a tad under-helpful and dismissive, but the bartender's professional demeanor was a pleasant surprise. Our waitress might have been very slightly difficult to track down, but it's a big place and she had to cover a lot of territory. So service issues or not aside, the beer selection is formidable. However, they were out of the one beer my husband was looking forward to drinking. They did not carry my top pick (Amstel Gold). The one major problem I did have was one of the beers I ordered was defective. Totally not the bar's fault, although the bar tender remarked that the first bottle of that brand exploded everywhere when he opened it. The one he served me was just incredibly overly carbonated. I should have asked him to switch it for another type, but I was busy catching up with friends, etc., to bother -- so my fault, really. Food was fine. My buddy recommended the brisket, and it was good though not great. My husband's pulled pork was not exactly to my taste, but I only had a little bite of it, so not much to go on. Next time, I think I'd go with a variety of their bar-snacky appetizers to soak up all the beer that I'm dying to try. P.S. North Peak Siren Ale was the explody beer.

OK I feel the need to re-review Box since the time I went there last summer and was treated a bit "yuckily". I have been there three times since, actually - since I live pretty close to downtown Plymouth, it's one of those places that gets suggested by friends that you just can't get away from. It's one of a handful in downtown Plymouth that is pretty casual and easy to get to and I don't feel frumpy walking in there on a jeans and T-shirt day. Each time since, I have had pretty good service. Maybe they have turned over a new leaf - that's a good thing. As far as food goes, I still find it to be a little on the high side for bar food but it's not any more than a local Applebee's or similar I guess...I am a fan of their grilled chicken sandwich because it's huge and I always have half to take home.

  • Daniel G.

I mean i dont even know where to start...and i already wasted 2 hours of my life on this place last nite sooooo ill just say...EPIC FAIL on every front except the killer beer list which we couldn't even enjoy becausethe service was so slow, uninformed and bad. it became a joke and we just started ordering pitchers...a few at a time. Xeroxed menus can be charming when made daily with decent stock and a little....charm...but you should see this confusing POS bound in frigging trapper keepers...sick today fromthe brisket sandwich...and I'm really lucky I only ate half. It was empty at 7pm for a reason. Beware. seriously kid, beware.

I really enjoy coming here to meet friends...The Box Bar has been here forever...Everyone loves a Nostalgic place ...this is one of them...Food is OK... for the price $$$ but still worth going just for a beer ..."1,000 i think to choose from"...WOW !! ~ Cheers~

Huge selection of (bottled) beer. The service is horrible. Takes forever for the waitstaff to get your order. They all seem to be more interested in hanging out in the kitchen. Save yourself the time and walk over to Sean O'Callaghan's

I came here on a crazy busy night with my ol' lady and another couple. They recommended it so this is where we went. We met them there and when we walked in there was a shit load of people. They had said it would be another 10 minutes to get a seat but it was more like 30. No big deal, I can wait. So they finally show us to a table, which was way way way in the back of the restaurant. A section I didn't know existed and wouldn't expect it to. I kind of wondered why we waited so long as the section had about 6 free tables all capable of seating at least 4 people, at least. The waitress came and seemed really busy but she was friendly enough. We ordered some calamari and it was ok. Not the worst I've had but no where near the best. The texture of it was off. It was a little too soft and there wasn't really any flavor. Plus it was like the size of a side dish. For the price it was a very small portion. So for my meal I ordered a meatball sub, listed under the sandwich section of the menu. This is where I had mixed emotions. The waitress comes out with our food. I noticed what looked like a bread bowl used for soup. Nope that's my "sub". At first I was disappointed. I mean I ordered a meatball 'sub' under the sandwich section of the menu. If I were to pick this thing up I'd look like a mad man. It was basically a bread bowl with a couple meatballs, I'd say 4, inside topped with sauce and cheese. Just writing about it pisses me off. It's not a sub nor a sandwich. It should be called a meatball bread bowl. Then I would have known what I was ordering. I had to eat it with a knife and fork. The meatballs were ok but there was barely any meatballs compared to how fucking big the stupid ass bread bowl was. There was a shit load of bread, a shit load of sauce and a decent amount of cheese. The bread was soft but honestly tasted like it was microwaved with a spritz of water. I know how that tastes because I've done it before and it tasted the same. I doubt I will ever return to this place. Not to mention it was $100 for four people. Not worth the money. Yes they have a shit load of beer but so does Meijers. That doesn't mean they're all good.

I go here once in a while to have lunch. I haven't been there in long time, too many places around town and not enough time! I get their grilled chicken burger or box bar burger. I've enjoyed both. Their soft drinks come in a 1/2 size pitcher. They have huge beer selection, mainly in bottle format. Worth trying at least once!

    (3)

Beer list = amazing, service = kinda crappy. Really, with the beer selection they have here you will never disappoint a beer snob. I always question the service (like turning off the TV during an overtime game), though.

This is a great casual place to grab a craft beer or a great pulled pork sandwich. Or really do yourself a favor and try the corned beef. It's come as you are small town comfy spot. Great soups as well. Tons of outdoor seating in the summer. Right across from Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth, MI. They are happy to do carry out as well. Oh PS...get some onion rings ;)

This used to be a great spot with great food and service. Food is awful now and comes out cold. The waitstaff has attitudes and not attentive. My boyfriend and I got our food and 22 minutes passed (timed it on our phone) before anyone came up to us. That was only because we had to flag someone down for the check. No "how is your food?" And no "would you like a refill?" Worst service ever. EVER. Never going back unless it's the last place standing during an apocalypse.

A looongg time ago, this was a great burger & beer joint. No longer. Eight of us met for dinner on a Tues night. Split a cheeseburger ordered "medium" that came out well done & tough. Terrible fries. Our table also ordered lots of apps including, jalapeño poppers, chicken tenders, artichoke dip, nachos, pretzel and meatballs. All appetizers a little below bowling alley fare. There is a reason this place doesn't do well--bad food, average service and then the waitress decided to go home and wouldn't serve my friends anymore beer (and my friends are senior citizens. Plus, they weren't even driving, no one was drunk or loud...) The time was 10:00 pm. I know, I know, that seems really late for senior citizens; but, one of our friends is here, unexpectedly, from CA to care for their sick dad. Now I know why I haven't been here in years and will never be back. There are many good places near here--go to one of them and skip The Box Bar.

I don't drink, so if you want a review about beer, probably not the review you should be reading! My favorite part about going to bars though is bar food, so I was excited about the huge menu behind the huge list of beers. I ordered 2 soups: white chicken chili and butternut squash bisque. Basically both tasted like Campbell's. I mean, it wasn't so bad, it just wasn't that great. Pretty cheap for a cup though. My friend ordered the soup in the bread bowl, which would have been fine but the entire outside of the bread bowl was slathered in the soup, creating a soggy effect. The party in general wasn't too happy about the service, but I rate it "a-ok". As a plus, there was a lot of room for large parties. There were a lot of children running around, which was a bit odd too.

I wouldn't have gone here with all the other options and based on yelp score, but hubs didn't want to wait at one of the other places :( Our waitress was nice. Service was fast almost too fast. We ordered soups and cheeseburgers. We no sooner received our soups and out came through burgers. Soups were eh. Chicken chili was more like a spicy bean soup with a heavy side of salt. It was so salty I couldn't finish it. Hubs Wisconsin cheddar was lukewarm and tasted nothing close to any real wis cheese soup I've had. It tasted like it was from out of a can. The cheeseburgers were 2 well done pre made patties with lil flavor. Perhaps the beer is the reason for visiting...

This is one of the places we hit every time we visit my fiancee's mom in Plymouth. The fact that Box Bar is an easy three block stumble from her place is nice, but the main reason we go is the beer. They have an incredible selection of bottles and drafts. There is always something unique on draft, including some harder to find specialties. I am never disappointed by the beer options. The food is good, the Plowman's Lunch and soft pretzels are great appetizers. The one aspect lacking here is the table service. Sitting at the bar ensures attentive and quality service, sitting at a table is hit or miss. Not rude service, just slow, even when the place isn't crowded. Not sure why that is, but that's a minor annoyance compared to the otherwise enjoyable experiences we've had time and again. If you love beer, stop in and see what they have. If you're disappointed by the selection, you're too picky.

The atmosphere is cozy and the staff made sure that we had excellent service. Our waitress was friendly and well versed on the specials and menu items. She recommended the Barbecue chicken for her and the Pasta for me. The food was served fast and we both enjoyed our experience. We will come here in the future for sure.

Had to check this place out at the recommendation of a friend. We were in Livonia and asked where to stop for dinner. They said try the Box Car so we did. When we arrived in town the place was packed. There was an orchestra playing in the park across the street and almost no where to park. We parked on one of the side streets and walked to the Bar. I didn't know what to expect so I asked the hostess for a menu. They said look in the yellow section for the food. We opened up the menu and was amazed at all the items available. It was a no brainer, we had to eat here. The hostess said would you like to sit inside or out. We said out and was promptly sat down. I couldn't believe they had seating as the city was packed with people. We sat down and ordered sodas. The soda came in a mini pitcher that was about 28 oz.. We looked at the menu and my friend recommended the burrito. I ordered the burrito and which came later and it was huge. I have a close to bottomless stomach and I was unable to eat the whole thing. Large and full of flavor. They added a bunch of rice on one side and re fried beans to the other with some chips. EXCELLENT! The menu had a ton of drink choices as well. There is no way you will walk out of this place thirsty! The prices are reasonable but we spent roughly 11$ per person for a meal and a drink. You must try this place the next time your in town. You won't be disappointed. Im hoping my visit wasn't a fluke and their service has gotten better than the previous reviews.

Great bar food. This is a good place for decent consistent food. Wont win any awards for executive quality, but its a bar after all. Big portions and good prices. I highly recommend the soups!

The burgers are dry and bland. The bread bowl is awful. There's literally not a worse place to eat in Plymouth.

Wasted potential. I am convinced it's the excellent location that keeps this place afloat, attractively positioned in the center of Plymouths downtown it's right in the area where visitors want to hangout. The reason I'm gripping is because the service here is poor and food (at least in my experience) overcooked. Our waitress took ages to get to us and insisted we could not sit at a large table outside but if we wanted to sit together would have to go inside. Perhaps this was a fire code issue but common I don't see the fire station going around handing out tickets on early Sunday afternoons. Burger, was poorly made with a soggy bun and tough overcooked beef. I like that the place has lots of different beers on tap and a very cool styling with beer Steins lining the walls. The beer was not enough to wash out the bad taste of service and food out of my mouth though. I'm sorry I just think this place sucks.

Thank You box bar for your response to the review. unfortunately I must say that is addressed none of the concerns I listed in my posting not touching base on the intent of service and I am sure the rest of the reviewers on here can see like some of the other responses that this was a generic cut-and-paste response unfortunately just like your food thank you I guess for the whole ten seconds it took you to reply but at least it's more than what I can say for some other establishments I was just hoping for more

Ok the reason to go here is for the beer selection and the burger. But after about 4 years of duct tape on the booths I think it's time for major update in this place. Why do the owners think we all want to sit on duct tape booths? Come on owners let's class this place up a bit. If you can't afford to recover the seats, let me know I will adopt the first booth and get the ball rolling. "Adopt a booth at the box bar" $50per booth.

The burgers here are good and the salads are good as well. We usually have lunch here during the art fair each year and even with as slammed as they are, always quick and friendly service.

Went there with a group of neighbors Wednesday before thanksgiving. 14 people and yes we expected it to be busy. It wasn't at all an now I know why. All other restaurants and bars on the walk up were packed with lines. We ordered nachos to start. Basically tortilla chips with sprinkle cheese then heated up then sat on counter for a while. The whole group was disappointed. I use to go here with my parents back in the late 80 and they had the best burger around. Now it's a Frozen patty. Need to get rid of all the beer choices and focus on making good food.

The food was good. Our server was kind of awkward, though. Maybe she was just having an off day, but she kept coming over every 5 minutes to ask us if we wanted more water, and when we said no thanks, at one point she just stood there like she forgot where she was or what she was doing. I understand everyone has their days. Good burgers, mediocre sweet potato fries.

After waiting 15 minutes for a can of beer it expired in 2012. No one came by. I went inside to ask to speak to a manager and returned the beer. Waited another 15 minutes before I got up and left because no one came back.

This wasnt the horrible experience i was anticipating from the reviews. We went the day after christmas, had a nice seat overlooking the avenue. Our server was friendly and attentive. Soft drinks were plenty in oversized pitchers and everyone was satisfied with the soups in huge bowls, including tortillas and chowders. Burger was fine. My father wanted the steak sandwich which he remembers eating here 25 years ago but the server said not to get it, as too many are disappointed by it. At least she's honest. Yes decor is dated but no issues with server or food. Still in the game for unpretentious plymouth dining.

I've been here on a busy day and a slow day and to be honest it wasn't that great either time. The first time we waited close to and hour an a half to be seated cause it was around the ice sculpture festival which is understandable. I've gotten the fish and chips both times and I love them! The beer selection is stellar. On the slow day the waitress didn't even ask us if we wanted a drink for at least a half hour after being seated it seemed like they virtually forgot we were even there. My friend got the brisket and it was definitely not enough for him. If you want brisket go to Slows in Detroit cause your probably not going to find it better anywhere else. I'd probably not go here again. O'Calaghans and Iron Mountain nearby are always busy but they also always service their customers quickly and efficiently.

This place is a joke as a restaurant. I had the meatball sandwich. I wish I would have read the description better. It came in a bread bowl that was the texture of bread that has been microwaved. My boyfriends chicken Caesar salad came out with the dressing on the side and no chicken. After waiting for the chicken to come out for 15 minutes the waiter finally came out and said there was a problem in the kitchen and the chicken would not be coming. The waiter did take it off the bill. How nice. He had the personality of a wet blanket. I will never eat here again.

the only reason to come here is for the beer selection. that said, there are several other bars in town that have great beer selections, but also have great service and delicious food. do yourself a favor and try those places instead. the Box fails completely on service. if you think this would be a great place to sit outside and sample some beers, think again: as bad as their service is, things get even worse if you're not ordering food. the staff will simply ignore you. food is mediocre at best. not much else to say. disappointing that this place hasn't made any effort to turn around their terrible reputation, because it's taking up some prime real estate.

DONT GO HERE! Terrible service and terrible food. Food cold. Waiter put my sides in wrong and when I asked for new sides charged me for them even though he took my old sides away. Husband asked for a double on his drink because his first rum and coke didn't even taste like any alcohol was in it. Got charged $7.50 for the extra shot.

The apple-smoked salmon was good enough. The rest of the food (potatoes, overcooked veggies, chicken sandwich, and French fries) were all tasteless. Stay for the huge TV projected for sport games and the moderately large beer list and the mini pitcher of soda. The service was pretty good too. However, because most of the food was not great, I will not come back.

Worst Experience EVER. Sent food back. Then ordered coffee...that was terrible as well, sent it back also. Food tastes like it came out of a can. There are many other restaurants in Plymouth, don't waste your time or money here.

Love the food. Draft system needs to be rehauled. Flat draft beer. Totally upsetting when you pay 10 bucks for a rare beer. Would have a gold mine if ownership would step up. Come on!!!

Stopped in last night after the ice fest and we were immediately greeted with a smile and seated.. Yes, like others have said...the booths are less than desirable.. My seat had a hole in it masked with duct tape.. This doesn't really bother me, I didn't walk in to what I consider a bar and grill with huge expectations.. For what it is, it's fine.. Our server greeted us almost a second after we sat down to take our drink order. Being parched, I was pleasantly pleased to see how they serve ice water - comes in a mini pitcher! Loved it! My bf ordered the nacho appetizer as a meal and said it was filling and delish! I had the pulled pork sandwich which was one of the best I've had.. The bun was fresh, soft, and warm.. The pork was hearty with a bossy sauce.. I didn't go in the bathroom, but my bf did and said it was nice..so not sure about the negative reviews about the filth. For beer drinkers, the coolers went on and on with tons of selections of bottled beer, not sure about tap.. Next time I'm in Plymouth, this'll be a contender.. We had a yummy bite and received great service!

Had to update my review-bottom line: Food got worse, service is unbearable. The servers know absolutely nothing. The owner needs to take some pride in his shit and close down for a while to clean, redecorate, and train EVERYONE. Gordon Ramsey should come in this place and tear it up. I'd hate to see the Box close because I used to really enjoy coming here but for the last two years-it SUCKS. Just like to add the last two times I went here I got sick and guess what, I didn't even eat the food! I was told by a friend in the medical field that my beer glasses were probably dirty. Service sucks, employess attitudes are shit-especially for not doing their jobs or knowing anything about anything or even checking on you at all. Wonder why the patrons always seem pissed off and rude? Because they have been waiting more than 30 minutes to even lay eyes on you! Disgusting.

The Goods: Giant list of craft beers on tap. Great location right in downtown Plymouth. The Bads:Dining area smells, booths are falling apart with half assed duct tape repair jobs (c'mon really?), flying bugs all over. Bathrooms are gross. Most of the waitstaff looks like they"re in high school, and have no clue about beer or about waiting on tables. The menu is ridiculously large, and most of the items I've had are not very good. The Verdict: This place is going to shit. With this many beers on tap, it has the potential to be an awesome craft beer bar, but it's HORRIBLE. My suggestion is to gut the dining area, simplify their menu, and get a waitstaff with a clue. If you are looking for a place in Plymouth for some good craft beer, go to Hermann's in Old Town. Or drive to Ashley's in Westland. You will have a much better experience at either of those.

This a 2 star. The only reason why I'm not giving this a 1 star are because of the fries. Here are the highlights of this place. The seats are duck taped. Uh Duck Dynasty much. The waiters are just rude. I asked for a coke since that's the shit.one of them said is Pepsi okay in the most Kardashian way ever. It's just damn fine. They don't understand that Pepsi is the wannabe of coca cola. Anyways, me and my friends were there and we ordered fries. I asked the waitress how much the fries would cost and she walked away. What is this, Pretty Little Liars? I want my question answered. After the bill came, I left a $2. She should be lucky I didn't tip her with a stick of gum.

This post is about hospitality. Our adult children were in town and we stayed home with 10 month old while they discovered the ambience and walk-ability of downtown Plymouth. Son in law was chastised for finishing his drink from the nearby coffee shop while standing on their patio. Moving in to the bar the glass of wine was sent back because it had gone bad. Waitress refused to give a new glass of wine. Really? Box bar needs to up their game not to mention the dated and dirty decor. Embarrassing introduction to a quaint part of Michigan.

I came here approximately two years ago for the first time, expecting the best burger mankind has ever slapped on a griddle/grill/whatever. Sadly, this cowsandwich did not live up to the hype. Are we snobs, masterchefs or just plain picky? Not quite. However it does irk me to receive something of which I feel my homemade version would kick its butt, AND call it names, to boot. Now on the happier side of this review, I think their fries are pretty much the bomb! Being a truly authentic import from the Netherlands myself, I prefer consuming my fries the Dutch way: Dipped in mayo, and lots of it! Sometimes all a girl needs is great company, a choice of about 600 beers and a pound of fries!

Oh My Gosh!!! We had not only good food with a pretty downtown & outdoors atmosphere... But the waitress tonight , "BETH".. Was the kindest, best & most pleasant waitress ever!! If you want a yummy chocolate fountain with an array of fruits and things to dip into your chocolate, then visit the Box Bar on Mondays through Wednesday nights! The food is pretty darned good for a bar and the waitstaff cares! I also love the huge water pitcher that they serve my soda in! I never have to ask for "seconds"! The nachos here are the best of anyplace I've ordered them before! The reason being is that the cheese is melted throughout and not just on top! Again, I just have to give "Beth" Kudos.. Because she made our day!! *************************************************************OK...with that being said...that was a couple of months ago...this Summer 2012....But now...I just have to say how totally "DISAPPOINTED" my husband and I were this past time we ate at the "BOX Bar" in Plymouth, Michigan. We had a waitress who's name I have no idea because she never told us and she didn't wear a tag and the reciept was ripped where a name should've been. Do you think she maybe thought we'd write something or tell someone about our bad experience? Well, we waited and waited ...waited some more and waited....and waited ...and waited....we got our drinks....then we waited and waited and then we waited more and more and then we ordered....So then we tried to be patient as it was a nice evening and we were sitting outdoors. But we waited again for our food and then we waited at a minimum of 20 minutes for the waitress to bring us our check. Finally, she set it down on the table but then she never came back! I went inside to go to the ladies room and on my way, I told the hostess that this was taking so long and I really wanted to speak to the manager. The hostess told me "We are short staffed tonight and have 2 people missing, I'm really sorry". Well, of course then I felt badly for complaining, but still, the customers shouldn't carry the brunt of a short staff, right?? So I told the manager, a short statured young woman with long dishwater blonde hair. She told me that "I don't know why the hostess told you that, we are NOT SHORT STAFFED"!!! HMMMMM???? So then I proceeded to tell her our "waiting" /time issue that evening with our waitress outdoors. She told me "Oh, she's new ...hmmm.... I"ll tell you what...next time you come in...I'll give you a free appetizer".!!! That's not what I wanted! I wanted a real apology and to be told that this won't continue to happen to us when we come to that Bar to eat! We won't be visiting there for our "free appetizer" any time soon, believe me. What kind of manager does that and says that ??? She didn't even give me a piece of paper with a signature on it for the "free" appetizer for our long waiting times!! So what...we are supposed to remember and go up to her and hope she remembers US and then tell her that she "offered us a free appetizer LAST visit because the service was so poor"???? That's just weird....sorry.... Well, what started out as a great review for "BETH"...ended up being another server who didn't care about our time, which is important to us! We won't be back for a very long time! Sorry guys....I used to like this place but the manager really turned us "OFF"...Maybe you should try some of the other great bars in town...Plymouth, MI has many great little bars with much better food and great service...believe me...

I met a couple of friends here for drinks the other night. We planned to go to a different bar, but they lost power due to downed wires from high winds. We walked in at 5pm & the place was completely empty. The less than enthusiast hostess sat us down, and we waited for our server. About 5 minutes later, our waitress appeared and said "Hey" in a rather depressed tone. The overall tone of the bar was pretty depressing. We laughed because it was so bad. We ordered beer, an app & food. I ordered the Spinach Salad, which was decent. The little flies/gnats or whatever they were that started flying around was a huge turn off. I think these flies are in this place year round. I've noticed it before & forgot about it. Definitely will not order food here again. They also offer a chocolate fountain buffet for 99 cents added to your dinner. It was a nice set up. The chocolate fountain was huge! There were several small plates of fruit, marshmallows, and crackers to dip. I'm not a fan of chocolate fountains, so I didn't indulge. Honestly, I thought it was a little weird. As patrons came in, some people did opt for the fountain. I'd come here for drinks, but that's about it.

The service is ALWAYS SLOW. That said...If you hit it on a weekday you are TOTALLY distracted by the 99 cent chocolate fountain. Food is good but not great. Stellar view of the park and nice atmosphere.

Had the steak sandwich and it's listed as a favorite on the menu but it was definitely not mine. The steak was chewy and looked like it had been thrown on the grill fresh out of the freezer. The place has a great variety of beer which Is why it didn't receive a lower rating. Was disappointed when they brought out the beer tray they didn't explain what each one. Overall I'd say come for the beer not the food or service.

I find it funny that at a bar with a large beer and drink selection the only people who work there are 16 and 17 years old and couldn't tell you a single thing about any of it. I think this place could be updated and is a little dirty. However, I am a big fan of pulled pork and box bar has the best pulled pork sandwich I have EVER had! Which is why I keep coming back!

Even though it was a busy Friday night, our server seemed a bit slow and non-attentive to our table's needs. Frequent passes for more water and any other needs were off her list for the night. Food was great as always, but I wish we could have had better service for the night.

  • Chris D.

Had to remove a star, this place is in a downward spiral. Service just gets worse and worse every visit and the place seems dirty now. I wonder if this place will still be around in a year or two. They are not friendly to the "bar hopping" crowd and don't expect them to serve you more than two drinks without cutting you off. Ridiculous. The booths are all covered in dirty, sticky duct tape. The atmosphere is poor, the lighting is dim. Still has a huge beer selection which gives them a two star rating...

Come early for Music in the Park on Fridays (from Memorial weekend until Labor Day weekend) and sit outside. The drink menu is extensive with beers from all over the world. We've always had great service here and fun times with friends. The food isn't great no matter how much we want to like it. Grab We always come back especially for the drinks and the location across from the park. Sit outside to people watch and drink a beer...or two!

  • Katherine B.

I am really surprised by all the negative reviews. The service was great; our waitress Haley was super friendly and attentive. I loved the little pitcher of pop, which meant no waiting for refills, and the place had a fun and interesting decor. I ordered the nachos and they were the best I've had in a long time. The deep-fried flour tortilla chips (my personal fav) were fresh and made in-house. The toppings were plentiful, fresh, and delicious. We wanted to sit outside, but it was raining. We'll be back on a nice summer evening to try something else from the huge menu.

  • Laurie G.

The new beer tray just rocks. I'd go every day just to sample the four rotating daily selections. It's the best thing they've ever done. Great place for families and if you get there early, you can sit on the patio and listen to whatever music group is performing in Kellogg Park.

I know you can get burgers any where. But they have a good solid cheese burger here with fries. Try it! I have not gotten a chance to try the beers here because I came at lunch time. But it's a cute little place inside, lots of booths and it doesn't look as fake and new as the exterior of this building. Seems like an easy place to come if you have a family. But it seems hard to mingle and chat with people if you come in the evening because it looks as if your restricted to your table.

This restaurant doesn't even warrant 1 star-- it deserves ZERO. Four of us went there one sunny Sunday evening to sit on the outdoor patio & have a few drinks. My friends have held parties there & so on, so they said it'd be great. NOT SO. Apparently, it's gone drastically downhill. The waiter that served us was seemingly bored, unenthusiastic and -not even trying to be mean here- would have been better suited working in a morgue. Expressionless face, monotone voice, not what you'd expect at a bar & grill. We waited a HALF HOUR for our drinks (which were NOT complicated, and the place was NOT busy). On top of that, the shots were disgusting! We didn't request some newfangled shot-- just something basic, and they screwed it up. When I politely complained to the server, the server said they had a "new bartender". When I asked to speak to a manager, she goes, "Sorry." THEN she had the audacity to say, "Well, I can't give you free shots." She could have done what MOST restaurants would have done-- provided a small discount for the poor service, bad drinks, but nothing. I'll never return, and now I see why this place has a ton of bad reviews on Google. We ended up going to Plymouth ROC (on Ann Arbor Rd) and had excellent drinks and GREAT service. Box Bar is a waste of your money. Go somewhere else. Definitely not here, where the service is poor and the management doesn't care. What a waste of a great location. A RANDOM P.S. I joined Yelp JUST so I could write this review...ABSOLUTELY disgusted.

Came once, waited 20 minutes at bar and never once got greeted so I up and left. Came back 2 years later, 2 days ago. Place was dingy and rundown, booths ripped, waitress CLUELESS about the entire menu, food included. Food was gross, spinach artichoke dip seemed like it was a warm, over salted brick of cream cheese with scattered flecks of stringy soggy spinach. Swedish meatballs tasted like out of a frozen Lean Cuisine, and salad was wilty iceberg lettuce. My friend and I were sick after. This place is a huge waste of space in downtown Plymouth. I WILL NOT go back. The beer selection is great, but with no one having ANY knowledge on any of it, this is not enough for me. Bathroom is gross too.

This is in a great location. There is no further positive description. What a DUMP! The carpet is DIRTY & the food for the most part inedible. You'd think they'd, at the very least, have a good burger....NOT! It is LOW GRADE GFS food. I don't care what beers or how many they carry...they call this a restaurant...YIKES! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It deserves no star.

  • Jeff L.

It's hard for me to rate this place because it brings back some bitter sweet memories which i won't go into, but let me try my best, I didn't have any food, but as other have mentioned the beer list is bordering insane, you might as well blindly pick something because the beer list is so voluminous you'll surly feel overwhelmed. The place is to over lit, and I found it odd how many kids were there late at night. I would almost assume a place like this would attract a young hip crowd, but it seemed mostly like families. I did spot a cool mural on the wall in the back, besides that, the place didn't have much character.

The Box Bar is another bar that tends to be in my downtown Plymouth rotation. Somehow, my friends and I always gravitate here because of the extensive and stellar beer selection. The beer coolers behind the bar stretch on forever...not really but they stretch the length of the bar, and its a long bar! Food is mediocre at best. I've had a few items here on the menu, but honestly nothing stands out because I cannot remember one thing I've had here except the soup. They do have a long soup list that rotates daily, so if that's you're thing, go for it! Service is OK here, its never been stellar, nor has it been bad in my book. Come during the summer, they have a great patio facing the Penn theatre...perfect for people watching. While you're here, check out the ridiculous collection of beer-steins in the smaller dining room. Come for the streetside patio, stay for the beer list but head elsewhere for tastier grub.

The international beer selection is fantastic, although they're frequently out of my husband's favorite, the Frankenheimer Alt. We keep going back because they have it...sometimes. The selection also makes it a favorite of visiting Germans with the company my husband works for. We haven't had an issue with the service or food. I like the fish and chips best, but I've tried other menu items as well and not found anything to complain about. The big TVs are a little annoying, since I'm never there to watch anything they're playing, and they're impossible to ignore.

Stopped in for dinner after the ice festival service was very poor food was just okay bathrooms are disgusting. they do have a large selection of beer but they were out of the 2 I ordered. its an okay place to stop in for a beer but that's about it stay away from the food.

Flat beer, very bad service. We were told by the waitstaff that if your "tap beer" tastes flat and undrinkable, like a dead skunk, that it is their owner's policy.... too bad. It's a shame, we just moved right behind the place, love beer, and will never go back!

Not so happy with the box bar tonight

I ate here with a friend last night and oh man....the service was just laughably bad!! I mean, it was so off-kilter that she and i were just cracking up the whole time. seriously...who's training these people? It was a nice August night so we wanted to eat outside on the patio (it was a Wednesday so the whole place was empty.) Yet the hostess said it would be a half hour wait....so we wait and look at the extensive (and very diverse) beer list. After a half hour passes in the empty restaurant (why haven't we been seated? who knows?) I told the hostess that we would sit inside if she could just find us a seat. (In a still-empty restaurant, mind you.) The whole staff (young hostesses, waiters) just seemed kind of strangely slow and confused, like they were all toked out or something. if they were, they should have shared. The burgers we got were tasty. But the waiter or cook or whoever forgot all the toppings we asked for on them and we had to send them back. I think we could have dined and dashed and our presence wouldn't have been missed for a half hour! But we did end up hunting our waiter down and asking for the check. So come here for the beer--there's practically a whole liquor store behind the bar. But do yourself a favor. Just sit at the bar and forget about getting food. And whatever you do, don't ask to sit outside.

Looks great from the outside. Left a lot to be desired otherwise. I have been there twice. Big deal about the beer selection. You can get beer at many other bars. The atmosphere is basically terrible. If you are going to watch a sporting event - the projector screens for TVs (which are washed out by the light inside) have got to be the worst thing ever dreamed / I have personally seen in a bar. You can't see anything! The food is basically terrible. The wait staff pretty much put over the top as a place I will certainly never go ago again. When the place is empty and they can't keep up / ignore your there - that is when I draw the line.

I can't believe some of these reviews for Box Bar! I LOVE this place! When you order a soft drink, it is served to you in a pitcher, with a straw in it! I have NEVER had to ask for a refill, lol. If you are a beer fan (I'm not), you will love the beer cooler full of 200+ bottled beers! This is a great place to have a meal and hang out for another hour without all of the loud music!

hey, when i go to a bar; i really don't want to see 10 strollers in front of it but that is the box "bar" - been in there a couple of times and it is the 20 with two kids crowd. if that is your thing, then you will probably love it but if you want a burger and a beer and want to yell at the TV for a blown call - not the place to go, unless it is 9PM or so. food was pretty generic long with the service. they DO have a huge selection of beers but service is young and more interested making sure the FB status is current than getting you that second drink.

Great location. Below average food, very bad service! And this was not the first time on the service issues. Was there with a group and the waitress actually seemed pissed off when we wanted another round of beers, nobody there seemed very attentive. Bathrooms are filthy!! When you are in the BoxBar it reminds me of a Rams Horn that serves drinks. Other than the location nothing is very good here. Plymouth locals do not go here.. Too many good options around Plymouth for me to go there again.

A couple of girlfriends and I went to the box bar for a drink after dinner a Fiamma. wow! I hae never dealt with such childish, unprofessional waitstaff and management. FIRST of all, we waited 15 minutes to even be greeted. As soon as our waiter ( who looked like he wasnt even old enough to be out past 9p.m) took our drink order..My friends and I waited another 10 minutes..then, to our surprise The kid comes back acting extremely nervous and unsure of himself ( I wouldnt be doubt it if he wet himself trying to gain enough courage to tell us what he was about to say) and says, "I cant serve you". kind of laughing, we replied with "why is that?" He said he didnt feel comfortable serving us alcohol?! he said he didnt want us to leave drunk..p.s by the way we are 26 years old, and had NOT had even one drink that evening. IT WAS SO RIDICULOUS I couldnt believe this little kid. I asked to speak to the manager (whos name was monique) as we wait for this disgusting excuse of a manager to approach..the waiter vanishes in the back to hide. She walks up..we explain to her what the waiter told us..and she says he feels uncomfortable so she has to "back him" on whatever decision he makes. AS IF SHE IS NOT A "MANAGER" I told her we hadnt even been drinking, and didnt understand what their problem was ( keep in mind, everyone surrounding us had pitchers of beer all over their tables and were ONLY drinking) She must have been some glorified hostess or something! the owners name is John and I plan on speaking to him about these horrible trained people that provided the WORST SERVICE I have ever had in my life!! these people werent even confident about what they were saying..they looked terrified when I was interrogating them on what basis they had to refuse us service. She said she didnt know what the reason the waiter had and SAID IT DIDNT MATTER! they couldnt even come up with ANY explanation. I WILL never Go back here again, and I will bash this place every chance I get. I hope these worthless peoples actions make the business go under. NEVER EAT AT BOX BAR!!!!!!! all the other restaurants in plymouth have good service, try them!

I went here for dinner last night and really liked trying some new beers, but would have probably had a couple more if we had a waitress that knew we were there... So similar to the other reviews the beer selection is impressive and the burger was good as well, but they need to work on the staff a little bit. But I would go back to maybe sit at the bar and have another burger and beer if I'm in town again.

I saw the reviews about the bad service & thought, How bad can it be?? Well, it was SO bad that I'll never return no matter that the food was good. I won't go into details but it was probably the worse service I've ever encountered. We had a table of 11 & the waitress ruined our night out.

Went in around 10:30 on a Sat. nite. Since we were hungry, I ordered a burger/fries and hubby ordered white chicken chili. I was very happy with mine and he said his was nicely seasoned. The crowd was multigenerational and it was not a crazy, loud bar. Sports were showing on all screens, including soccer games, and we had not trouble carrying out a conversation. The beer selections was endless and the bar was really an interesting display of dozenssssssssssssss of beers from all over the world. Definitely liked the atmosphere and will return.

Hot clam chowder in a huge bread bowl really hits the spot when the temperature is in the single digits. Otherwise, I'd say the food is really quite remarkably average. Seems like a cool place to have a beer, though.

I have been going to the Box Bar for 25 years. It has changed from a hole in the wall to a bigger nicer hole in the wall. There are so many types of beers in the cooler and on tap that I just sit there amazed. The burgers are and food overall is good (not great). The atmosphere is fun, and very unique. I would recommend this place, for family (early dinner), groups, as a bar (evening), lunch (group or just a few), or as a hang out. Parking is difficult so look around.
