The Cowboy has great food and a fun night time atmosphere for the 21-30 (ish) age group. They have DJ's and live music, the staff is friendly too. I would say my only complaint is they are not open Sundays and I bet they would get a decent lunch crowd.

Great service, very good burgers. Good (and free) chips and salsa. We've been a few times at lunch. I wouldn't go at night though. Not a great area and don't want to deal with the drinking crowd.

Well I think the ratings so far may be a little misleading. It is definitely not a 5 star caliber restaurant but it's not bad. People from Jackson think of this place as a nightclub more than a restaurant so you should be aware of this. I wouldn't go here for dinner at 8:00 on a Friday or Saturday night. That being said, the food is not bad and I recommend it for a lunch. I definitely would not recommend it for a Friday or Saturday evening dinner spot. They make pretty good margaritas here. I agree that the owner is active in the Jackson community.

The Crazy Fajitas are fabulous & the salsa is DEEEE-LISH!!! Order those up with a CoronaRita! Yummmmm! (I love to order salsa, rice, & beans for all my parties! Preorder those all the time!)

The rating of this place completely depends on the day or time you go in. On weekends at night it is more of a hangout/dance bar. They have a DJ, it can get extremely noisy, and the crowd is typically younger with a rough element occasionally. Now if you go in here on a weekday for lunch or dinner or on the weekend for lunch or an early dinner it's a completely different atmosphere. They do have Mexican dishes as well as Tex-Mex. Their margaritas are good and sometimes they have happy hour specials going on for them. As a restaurant I like this place. The food is pretty good, I wouldn't call it the best ever but it's solid Mexican/TexMex food.

Seems like a college watering hole at first, but it was clean enough and had consistent decor. The real treasure was certainly the food. Didn't get too far into the menu before the server recommended the crazy fajitas and I was instantly sold and didn't have a bit of remorse with a tab below $10 Edit: never posted this the first time (mobile yelp is finicky like that). Went a second time and got the crazy fajitas again. Even better! This time, I asked for some heat and they put fresh sautéed jalapeños. INCREDIBLE!

Please take it from me, who ever wrote these 4-5 star reviews must either work there, or are friends of people who work there. The food was mediocre at best. I got the "best. fajitas. ever." per a fellow yelper's tip. And they were nothing special, the chicken.. was weird(the only way I can describe it) no sour cream, no gauc, no cheese!! There fajitas for crying out loud at least give me cheese! The rice was over cooked and the beans were bland. My boyfriends order came out wrong, he ate it anyway because we sat in the booth across from the kitchen and watched the cook chew his food while making everyone else's. I'm a restaurant manager so maybe I'm harsh?? But when it comes to serving people food, I think you should be. Was not impressed and will never go back.

Tasty food, fun atmosphere, fast service. The fresh salsa is addictive because it is so flavorful!

Not sure how anyone rated this place more than three stars. Food was not good or authentic Mexican. Tortilla soup was something Robert Irvine would spit out on Restaurant Impossible. Only reason I gave it two stars is because waitstaff were attentive and friendly. Come here to drink...maybe. For the food...go elsewhere.

This place has really nice staff. I liked everyone I met. The problem is the food they sell doesn't taste very good. It is the farthest thing from "authentic" Mexican food. It is a very mediocre version of American Mexican. I enjoyed the people I met here but wouldn't return if I was hungry.

Stopped here for dinner based on yelp reviews and profoundly glad that I did. The food was outstanding. Too often Mexican food is greasy. This wasnt greasy at all - just really fresh and flavorful. The salsas are homemade (make sure they bring you the tomatillo salsa - its the bomb) and delicious. Mom had an enchilada with cheese sauce. This is the cheese sauce all those bottled sauces want to be. I had the flautas - very clean and tasty. Finally, don't miss the tequila list. My only complaints -the AC was cranking it out and it was too cold. The margarita was decent but not outstanding. Same for the guac. But these are all minor quibbles and won't keep me from going back (or recommending it),

Cold, gross food, under staffed bar. Every time I come here I want to like it, but I always leave disappointed. There never seems to be enough bartenders for the amount of people crammed in this little bar. I'm sure that it is more enjoyable during the day time when it isn't so busy (at least I hope? ), but I am done giving this bar chances.

As a reformed "Hater" who believed this place catered to the party crowd, I've grown to love this place. Two types of salsa (even though they're a bit watery) and some awesome Tex-Mex interpretations have made this the best Mexican restaurant in town. Plus, the wait staff speaks English. That's always nice. :)

I've only been to the cowboy for lunch since it's within walking distance of my job so can't comment on the 'fun' that supposedly happens here at night. The food is great! The menu is large and varied and they have daily specials to choose from as well. The chips and salsa are complimentary, which is a nice bonus. I love their salsa! The service is usually hit or miss. It seems to have improved lately, and it's good more often than it is bad, but man - when it's bad it really sucks. There are certain waitstaff who are very impersonal and act annoyed that you are there. Sometimes getting drink refills is quite an undertaking... The prices are ok. It's a little expensive to go here for lunch too often. Often gets pretty busy at around noon so go a little early if you want to find a table with no waiting.

I do a lot of traveling and finally started using Yelp so I could find good local restaurants instead of eating at chains. I tried the Crazy Cowboy based upon the reviews and was not disappointed. It was slow when I went and the service was extremely good (can't speak for when it's jamming). My wife is Mexican so I'm used to eating authentic Mexican food. This is the first Mexican restaurant I've eaten at in a small Mid-West town that is genuinely good. The steak tacquitos are for real (must use the tomatillo sauce), also had flauta (it was ok) and a wet shredded beef burrito (very good). Only complaint was that the chips aren't super fresh, but salsa is homemade and excellent. I will be back.

This place is beyond good. I always get the wet enchilada with shredded pork, it's fantastic. I've heard that anything with the shredded pork is fantastic!

Jackson has no idea what it has. I have a PhD in Mexican culture and this place GETS IT RIGHT. The food is the closest to "authentic" that I've ever had in this country. Even in high class/expensive Mexican restaurants in New York or Chicago. Try the sopes or taquitos - they are identical to the ones I ate living in Mexico. Their marinated pork is fantastic on everything. Great tequila selection. The owners bring back different kinds often from Mexico to keep their tequila club stocked. Nighttime gets, well, crazy! After the families leave on the weekends, if you want to party like you are in Cancun, then the Cowboy is your spot to dance and drink. Lots of fun! Owners are delightful and give back to the community through service, activities for kids, and work with legal immigrants.

Yes, it can get crazy at the Crazy Cowboy. Food? Fantastic. Service? Has gotten a lot better. Fun? Depends on how you define fun. The Cowboy offers great food for lunch or dinner and entertainment on the weekends. If you're in Jackson and looking for a place to slam shots of tequila and dance your ass off........The Crazy Cowboy is the place to go. They offer street parties in the summer and a live DJ as well as live bands. You can belly up to the bar on saddle bar stools and take free salsa lessons from the owner.

I spend a lot of time working in downtown Jackson and the Crazy Cowboy has been a favorite lunch/dinner destination. After exploring the lunch menu I have become addicted to #19 the Crazy Fajitas. Crazy Fajitas are essentially a mix of everything on the menu (chicken, steak, shrimp, chorizo, tomatoes, onion, and peppers) served over rice and topped with queso sauce with corn or flour tortillas. The lunch portion is more than enough and the dinner portion is ridiculous. If it's your first time dining at the Crazy Cowboy, order it. If you been going there for years but have never tried it before, order it. I've never left hungry or unsatisfied. Still haven't mustered the courage to saddle up at the the bar.

Not really an authentic mexican restaurant as described. Nachos are like a toastada. Fajitas don't sizzle and are greasy. Chips are ok, salsa is good but runny... not what your expecting!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
