Great food. The wait sometimes is long, even with a reservation. A little expensive but worth it.

We were waylaid by a snow storm on our way to Chicago, and pulled off the freeway into the small city of Jackson. Right away I saw 'AKA Sushi' and pulled out my yelp app to see what other interesting places there were. Nearer to our hotel was Ichiban. Both had four star reviews, but what does that really mean when neither had over 30? Also, having had sushi in Troy, MI - I guess I was giving them both the benefit of the doubt. We looked at AKA but it was super bright inside (which I dislike) and my husband didn't think it felt right. He decided sushi might not be the best idea but I was not deterred... so we headed to Ichiban, which was packed, but mostly due to hibachi. To start out - my hubby would've given this place an even lower star-count, and maybe he will if he reviews it. For me, I should have known what I was getting into. First off - our server was very nice and attentive. The fact that as we ordered our main courses (my husband picking various sashimi items, and I ordering 2 rolls specifically asking for jalapeno added [that's a dollar extra!] and no tempura) ...and both orders coming back slightly incorrect was a bit frustrating. We ordered two tobiko sashimis and two egg sashimis, but only received one tobiko and no egg. I can only guess the other fish he ordered was correct. He was not impressed, saying the salmon was the best fish but even then was mediocre at best. He said it all seemed 'fresh' at least - but who can say? The egg 'sushi' was large and sweet, and just OK. The tobiko was good, of course - but when you're buying it in bulk like every other place, I would hope it would be decent! The Miso soup was decent. It had a good flavor. Nothing more to report on that. For me - the sake us OK a bit sweet. I would never suggest ordering the Chardonnay... it tasted cheap and was unpleasant. Chicken yakitori was nicely flavored with sweet sesame sauce, but was super tough and either seemed it was waiting around for a long time, or was just reheated from a prepackaged meal. Really didn't care for this! Again I want to point out - It's a dollar to add jalapeño to a roll, and two dollars for making something in your roll tempura... which I didn't - because I didn't want anything to be fried, which I said... When my "Double spicy roll" came, it was covered in sweet sauces and was not spicy *at all* o-O It was also filled with some tempura flake - grr! The Ichiban roll came with tempura shrimp even though I'd said no tempura. Also it's sweet as well due to the sauces. None of the fish impressed me. It was all rather bland, as were the mild, seedless tiny bits of jalapeno that were added. As a last minute whim, I ordered a sashimi of uni (sea urchin) as our waiter told us it came in that morning. And shockingly, it was very good uni! Rich, tasting a bit of the ocean and a lot of the fatty butteryness it should have. I was shocked - as so many places do this so wrong. So that was the best part of the night, really. Then we went back to our room and played card games. The end.

I'll give 4.... would have got 5. But I've stopped in now 5 times and 2 of them. I have gotten shafted. We sat with another couple with there 2 kids. This couple ordered a boat load of sushi. And of course the grill. My wife and I with are 3 yr old. The 2 meat. This couple didn't order there 2 kids anything.... here comes the chef making them plates with our food. I made a complaint. And the guy got rude. He did say sorry they didn't realize. But still charged us full price. I'm a automotive mechanic. And the owner brought his Mercedes Benz in for 4 wheel break job. I should of only did one side and said sorry.... lol... jk.... I'll go back but will watch who we sit with

Great Hibachi and Sushi at reasonable prices. Awesome, friendly Wait staff and Managers. The chefs are talented and fun to watch. Great place to go throughout the week for both lunch and dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant. :) Yes, on sweetest day and Valentine's day there is a longer wait than usual, but that's what you should expect.

We went on an early Sunday afternoon to celebrate my daughter's birthday. I had made reservations on Friday night via phone. They did not have my reservation in the book, but were able to seat us anyway. The chef and waitress were very friendly. We found out that they serve dinner all Sunday, not lunch. As this would have been too much food for us, we asked if we could share the hibachi dinners. They had no problem with this and the chef was very good at dividing up our meals between our plates. The chef's tricks were basically the same ones you see everywhere with one exception. He carried fire from one part of the grill to another with his hand. My parents had the filet mignon and shrimp combo and said it was the best filet they have had. My daughter and I had the shrimp and lobster combo with Tiger rolls and California rolls on the side. The food was all very good. The atmosphere was far nicer than the previous two Hibachi restaurants we had attended in Okemos and Howell. I have found our favorite Hibachi restaurant in the area. Nice job Ichiban...we will be back. Next time, please put my reservation in the book. ;-)

Got 15 people on board at the office to order takeout from this establishment. We have heard nothing but great things and were excited to try it. After getting all the orders together our total had to be at least $150+. They told us they don't do take out orders for Hibachi side. With a bit of confusion running across my mind i was flabbergasted they were turning down an easy take out order that would make them great money. A restaurant who doesn't do take out is like a bar who doesn't serve alcohol. your left feeling empty because all you wanted was Ichiban for lunch or a whiskey at the bar. Not everyone has the luxury of taking a 1 hour lunch and going out to eat. Ichiban really should consider doing takeout as I'm gonna guess oh I don't know everyone does it! You are missing out on so much business. I'm sure your food is wonderful but honestly... who doesn't do take out... guess will have to spend our $150+ elsewhere.

Tempted to rate 4-stars because my steak was overcooked but everything was just so good I have to give 5!!! Delicious hibachi and sushi both! Will be back when I'm in Jackson. Nice visit.

This place is great. I love sushi and will drive 45mins to my favorite place a few times a month. For classic sushi, simple rolls and nigiri, Ichiban has little to improve and is very delicious. The miso and salad aren't included which seems to break tradition with most other places. The custom rolls are fine but could be raised to new level. I can be completely wowed at other places when a custom roll is as beautiful as art and tastes even better. The hibachi is also very good. I do wish it was cheaper and some items were included but mostly because I'd like to eat there more often.

Love this place. I usually get the chicken and steak, its always delicious. The staff is great. They make sure you have everything you need or want. The chefs put on a great show for you. It can be a little pricey for the food but the deliciousness is so worth it. There is only one thing i do not like about this restaurant, the fact that there is no changing tables in the restrooms. I will not lay my baby on the floor to change them. So that part sucks. Other than that this is a fantastic restaurant.

Delicious sushi and hibachi! One of our favorite places to go! Chefs are great and food is tasty. The only downside is the waitresses sometimes aren't always great. But nonetheless this place is awesome!

  • Eldonna R.

It is good but the take out menu is way too limited. Suishi and appetizers only. Sometimes you just want food and not the whole production of the hibachi table

Not a fan of waiting a half hour for takeout when quoted 15 minutes. Will go for hibachi, but not the best sushi in town

Went for sushi, didn't have to wait. The Sushi was 5 star perfect. The service was good, but not perfect. The service was a little slow, but they were very busy, and the manager stopped by to make sure everything was taken care of. This is the only reason for 4 out of 5. I will definitely go back again, it's good to have a high quality restaurant in Jackson.

Was quoted 45 minutes. After waiting for over 1 hour 45 minutes on Sweetest Day when I see them seat everyone else around me is the most infuriating thing in the world. Way to treat a pregnant person. Came all the way from Battle Creek. Can't even comment about the food because apparently I'm not good enough to eat it. After begging them, and hitting two hours we left. Way to leave a pregnant woman in tears and ruin her and her husband's sweetest day. This is the worst restaurant with the worst service I've ever been to, and I've been to some people pretty terrible places.

I grew up in the Far East so the hibachi thing is totally hokey to me. Kind of like the fortune cookie. Therefore I'm only commenting about sushi. The decor inside is beautiful. Modern theme with a lot of slate and stone. The full bar looks great. I'd say this is the best looking restaurant interior in town. Been there twice for lunch and once for dinner. Really enjoy the place. First 2 times sat at the sushi bar. Would give 5 stars for that. For lunch I loved the sashimi special and sashimi/sushi special. Salad was fairly routine for Japanese-American restaurants. Miso soup was very good. Most places pretty much just dissolve the paste in water and throw in some tofu and kombu, but I could tell there was more effort involved with theirs. Tasted like a house-made broth before mixing in the miso. The fish pieces were generous, and the plating/presentation neat and beautiful. Really impressed that besides the usual shredded threads of daikon radish, same was done with fresh beets. Today decided to sit at a table rather the bar. There were 4 or 5 staff near the entrance but none of them took notice to seat us or direct someone to do that for about a minute. However came and took orders quickly. Waiter Mike must be new at this kind of job. Forgot that salad and soup came with entree, then no pen to sign the credit card receipt. Getting back to the fortune cookie, they don't have 'em or at least we were not offered. Good for them. If you want fortune cookie, go up the street to the Chinese buffet. I'll definitely go back on a regular basis. That says a lot since I rarely dine out in Jackson. Shaun

I took my family here and I have to say everything was excellent. The chef put on a great show and the food was excellent. I had the chicken and steak, my wife had the salmon, and the kids had steak. Everyone loved their food. Next time we will try the sushi. The servers were very attentive and friendly. I highly recommend this place for a fun night out. It's well worth the price they charge and actually their prices are fairly moderate compared to similiar Japanese restaurants I've been to in bigger cities.

Very good! Fresh tasting bite sized rolls. Attentive staff. Let them know I was in a hurry and they accommodated. Not life changing but good basic sushi. The hibachi side was busy and everyone looked to be having a great time. Dinner and a show for sure:)

Both sushi and hibachi are delicious! The hibachi chefs are entertaining. Everyone was very friendly. Exactly what Jackson needed.

For a small town like Jackson Mi this was a pleasant surprise. I stayed there three weeks for business travel and went at least one to two times a week. Ate at the sushi bar and the sushi chef made me whatever I wanted. Being from Socal and eating at some of the best sushi bars in the US this place is worth a try if you are in the area. Don't let the outside fool you as when you go in very fung sui atmosphere. Prices are responsible and great attentive friendly staff.

Went there for dinner with a large group of 16. We were seated very quickly and the waiter saw us quickly and often. Our cook was very entertaining and the food was delicious. We all left with plenty of leftovers. Price was pretty standard for a hibatchi place. Will be back soon!!

Been there several times and been to several Hibachi Restaurants. One of the best. I will continue to go there. Very good value for lunch and they always ask if you are on time contraints. Very happy we have this place in Jackson.

Went for a hibachi lunch on a Saturday Debbie our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. They were out of the wine I ordered so upgraded for same price. We had the shrimp and dining companions had sushi, salmon and chicken. We all loved our meal. My friend bought extra salad dressing and they packed it in ice as we were going to a wedding. I thanked the manager for such a great meal and he was so nice. 10+ coworkers are going back next week for lunch. I can't wait

Second visit on Oct 4th. First visit after opening was perfect. Last night was totally different. Huge hunks of fat and grizzle in my filet mignon. Lady next to me didn't get her steak at all and had to ask for it after we all were finishing. I don't know if the staff is losing interest or corners are being cut but the experience does not bode well for the future of this much needed restaurant in Jackson.
