Having read the 5 star review, my wife and I decided to give Northern Gardens a try. While the description of the atmosphere and setting were accurate, I give 3 stars as a stretch. The food ranged from okay to downright icky. Yes, icky. I took one bite of the eggroll and almost spit it into my napkin. My wife couldn't get past just looking at mine and getting a waft of the smell. The pork-friend rice was good and the chicken fingers very good. The boneless BBQ pork came on a skewer and had an interesting, not bad, taste. The beef teriyaki was average. We were there at 6 on a Friday night. One other couple dined in with us and I saw only 2 people come in for takeout. At the dinner hour, that's not a good sign. The staff was friendly. We won't be returning. It was much like Jan Mee in Portland. Having enjoyed Boston Chinese, our search in Maine continues. So far, only Yummy House in Sanford has come close to meeting our expectations.

We stopped in for a late lunch on the way to Sebago lake, and it was a pretty unimpressive experience. There are two menus, we ordered off of the Chinese menu. The restaurant was totally empty except the chef and a few (I assume) family members (the older ones). It took us.... 45 minutes to get the food? And they forgot our appetizer, so we had to ask for it again (it came after the rest of our food). The food was very meh. One dish was fine (fried tofu with some sauce), my veg mei fun was pretty awful. Greasy, totally flavorless. Cheese rangoons were tasty, but tiny. Absurdly overpriced food - medium large portions, but the ingredients used were incredibly scant. Only vegetables in sight were scallions and green onions. Nothing specially about the cooking, I could (and have) done this at home better. As we were leaving, the rest of the family came back, and they seemed very nice and friendly, unlike the server we had. Very odd experience all around, and I definitely won't be going back.

Where should I begin? First, the lady behind the counter scares the you-know-what out of me. It's just dingy. I would rate their food, but I was too scared to order. I think I'd have better luck ordering food from a truck!

At a seminar in Portland, and looking for lunch. I ordered chinese broccoli lunch combo. The broccoli was crispy and was cooked right. I did not like the fried rice. There is no taste and the fried rice was bland. I will come back to try other dishes. Sooo... here I am 3 days later trying other dishes on the menu. This restaurant has both Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. We love pho so much that whoever serves pho we are willing to try. We sat down at our table and waited for the waitress to get our order. Ten minutes go by and we placed our order. We waited 20 min then 30 then 40 minutes, our food was finally on the table. We waited so long for our meals. Owners with businesses must be prep at all times to take in any amount of customers. We were 4 people and 2 people were waiting for take out. We ordered 3 pho, 1 beef chow fun and 1 sesame chicken combo and it has been 30 min and we still don't have our food. At this point no matter how good the food is I will not come back. I always like to support local Maine businesses but when they are this slow they can't possibly take in a crowds. We were 4, hardly a crowd at all at 530 pm on Friday peak time for restaurant. This should be a call ahead and take out restaurant only. During our wait phone calls were coming in and patrons are told that it would take an hour!! what????? how can you survive telling your customers that it take an hour for take out on a Friday night? I'm speechless. The food finally came 40 min later and 3 of us had our meal while one had to wait for hers. The pho broth was water and not much of a beef broth at all. The pho noodle was not your typical pho noodle but rather chow fun noodle. The slices of beef was thicker and it was not your usual eye of round beef. The beef chow fun was good ample of fresh vegetables and was the only edible dish. The sesame chicken was chicken fingers in a brown sauce with sesame seeds. Hardly looks like any sesame chicken I know. The dish side was with crab ragoons and there were 2 pieces. I couldn't make out that it was crab ragoons. It was tiny and not appetizing looking at all. how can Diana eat this? I feel bad. Especially one of her favorite sides is crab ragoons. It looks greasy and old. There were arguments from the kitchen too. All in all this must be one of worst restaurant experiences.

How can anyone say this is good food! It was horrible, smelled and was dirty! I ordered the S7 with rice and chicken fingers. I ordered a small crab rangoon. The portions were so small. The chicken fingers had a sliver of chicken in them, the rice was terrible. The crab rangoons were the size of a quarter and had a squirt of filling in them. For $13.00 anywhere else I would have 2-3 meals out of it! Never again. I wouldn't go there if someone GAVE me a gift certificate or if they were buying! Don't waste your money TERRIBLE!!!!

Ah so! I've been going here for 30 years. It's excellent Chinese-style food. The family that runs it is hard working and dedicated. When I started going here the girls were toddlers and they are now adults. The food hasn't changed a bit. Recommended.

If you've been a college student you know what good American Chinese food should taste like. I went to college in boston and i've had my fair share of chinese food, good and bad. Being chinese myself i know what REAL chinese food tastes like and what restaurant chinese food tastes like. For starters i was a frequent here when i was younger and i liked the food. things usually came quick and the girls at the registers were always friendly. I think this was a family run restaurant, i really don't like it when people hire random people who just don't care about their place. Seemed like it was a husband wife and kids helping on the weekends. Anyways, I was back in portland and decided to stop by. they changed their look, the place got smaller, i talked to the owner a bit and he said he rented out some space out. it was fine, the restaurant still seated plenty. what i really love about the place is that they have photographs of all the foods. i think every menu should photograph all the food. yeah, it sounds good, but i'm a visual learner. As for the atmosphere: this is not the place you take a first date.. no american chinese restaurant is a place you take a first date. unless she's gordo and loves pork fried rice with duck sauce poured all over it.. then you take her here immediately. the place is to hang out with buddies and what not. for me i think it's best for take out.. i don't think i've ever eaten in at an american chinese restaurant more than a handfull of times in my life anyways. overall: look, the place can use a little touching up, what place can't. it's a family owned mom and pop shop, i always support that. they work hard, the food is pretty friggan good and the service is great. i'm really tough on places and rarely give out 5 stars, just look at my previous reviews. but i give this place 5 stars because of a couple reasons. they ARE what you want in a fast food/chinese/takeout restaurant. they do all those little things right that make some of the other things not matter. when you think of a McDonalds you want to go in, get those fries and burgers like they look like on TV.. 99% of the time you don't, the people at the register are not smiling (can you blame them?) and they oftentimes cannot speak english (yeah, sometimes people at chinese restaurants can't speak english too, but at least if you say something on the menu they'll friggan know what you want, sometimes i can't order a friggan BIG MAC at McDonalds.. isn't that their bread and butter?????). oh yeah, the food (man i'm scattered on this review). the food is good. the american chinese food is the best i have had in my life, it hands down beats everything i've had in boston. then they have chinese food there that are more traditional. they do these dishes very well for not being a huge chinatown place. a takeout chinese restaurant that caters to both??? please move your business to boston, you'll close ALL of the chinese place around northeastern.

Pricing is good for lunch specials but food sometimes smells like the nail pallor next door

John, you are absolutely correct about their pork fried rice....I have to agree with you that the food there will not disappoint you. Everytime my family is up there for a vacation, we always stop in during our stay and before heading home to Boston. They are the best in town.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
