Catbird Creamery

this place is incredible -- the ice cream is so creamy and fresh!! the tamari caramel flavor, salted chocolate, strawberry balsamic flavors are all great! the nice lady gave us huge portions of everything! we have an ice cream coma right afterwards. the ginger greentea and blueberry mint flavor is just okay. furious George is unlike anything I've tasted, but I can't imagine eating an entire cone of it. overall, try what you like, then pick a cone!
Hands-down the best ice cream spot I have been too. I will follow that up by saying gelato fiasco has been my favorite spot for a long time and they are now losing a lot of business. The two are like comparing apples and oranges.. But like the best apple and orange I've ever had. Everything is handmade and prepared with love in this shop. The flavors are amazing, well thought out and all well-balanced. Don't be scared, get out of Portland and tried this spot.
My favorite place for ice cream!! The owners are fun and friendly and encourage you to try every flavor. Speaking of flavors, the have some peculiar sounding ones but don't knock it till you try it. My favorite is the blueberry sweet corn although the tamarin caramel and strawberry balsalmic are up there too. The regular size sundaes can feed two people or keep one full for several hours. It's a little hard to find but worth the extra couple of minutes you backtrack after passing it up on accident. A word to the wise though, this gem of a place is cash only.

Daily Grind

Reviews:
Some mornings I decide to go out of my way for coffee. To be fair, I normally walk to work, so going out of my way means getting in my car. When I do, this place is one of my top choices! The Daily Grind is a one man operation run by Mike. He is the main reason I love dropping by here. His service is always top notch, he always has a positive attitude, and usually a good joke or two. Not only do you get your morning caffeine dose, you also leave with a smile. Oh, and he always has a daily summary of thoughts posted in the window. For those of you that love a Chuck Norris reference, you'll find these entertaining. Even those of you that don't. :-) I mainly just get an iced coffee or latte here. Both are always excellent. He uses mainly Coffee By Design products, which of course are yummy. And, he has all the fixings - milk, skim milk, soy, sugar, Splenda, even sugar in the raw. He has a pretty extensive selection of options on the menu and is willing to tailor to your desire. He also has a small selection of breakfast treats (muffins, donuts, and pastries) that he gets from The Donut Hole. I highly recommend checking this place out. Come for the coffee once and you'll keep coming back for the service!
Westbrook really does not have a good selection of quality coffee. There is Dunkin Donuts and other shops with brands like New England Coffee Roasters and Green Mountain Coffee. I enjoy a good cup of high quality coffee and this is the best in the area. You will find The Daily Grind on Main Street and you will pull up to the drive through window. You will find the man (who I suspect to be the owner) to be very friendly and funny. He makes a great coffee and the selection of coffees, lattes cappuccinos and teas are extensive. I highly recommend those looking for a good cup of coffee in Westbrook to check this out. Avoid the long drive through line at Dunkin Donuts right up the street and support your local business and get a great cup of coffee at the same time!
Pretty awesome little place all drive through and the guy in there is really friendly made me think why aren't there more places like this absolutely loved it

The food is fresh, home cooking! I am vegan and he was very accommodating too!
This place is a true hidden gem! To start, the service is great. The owner and his employees always greet me with a smile. The daily specials are something my office looks forward to. The corn chowder is amazing and to be able to have a Thanks Giving Turkey dinner every Thursday is great! Word must be getting around about this amazing cooking as it sells out quick! Everything is fresh at River's Edge, and I have enjoyed every meal ordered here. I would highly recommend stopping by!
The food here is fantastic. Everything is fresh and made to order. Plus having Tony's Donuts doesn't hurt, either.

Amato’s

Reviews:
Stopped in last night for dinner on our way back to Massachusetts. I got the Ravioli with Dominic's Marinara sauce, my husband the Ziti-n-Cheese. PROS: Prices are reasonable, and both came with napkins, silverware, and scali bread. The sauce on my ravioli was actually pretty good - kind of a sweetish italian marinara. The ravioli were a bit undercooked (I think they use frozen) but I managed to eat it all up. The Ziti-n-cheese didn't stand a chance! We grabbed a takeout menu so we can call ahead next time we're headed that way. CONS: No indoor seating. It was raining, so we ate in the car. There are a couple of picnic tables outside, and I've been to other locations that have booths and tables. The staff was a bit....um...distracted. Not sure if they were tired or what, but we stood in line for a few minutes and no one asked us if we needed anything until we went to the registers and asked for some help. Other Amato's I've been to, I've never waited for one second to get someone's attention. All in all, a good hearty meal when roadtripping, and I'll be eating there again.
Great Italians!!!!! Love the pickles.
Service was great as usual and the food was even better. I had the Angus Steak Calzone which I never had before and loved it.

Siam Square

Great friendly service. Good food, nicely decorated.
Getting out Thai on this place hit the spot! Chicken pad Thai was great and what a huge portion! Good thing I'm not a quitter :-) The fresh spring rolls were good, fresh and well balanced. My wife had the chicken satay and was very happy with it- chicken was well flavored and moist. Good experience overall!
Before I tried Siam Square, I did not like Thai food. I have come to realize that my dislike of Thai had nothing to do with the type of food, instead it was the restaurants I had it at. Siam Square showed me that I in fact love Thai food and this is the place to go for it. Their pad thai is simply awesome. I have tried it with chicken, tofu and shrimp, but on my most recent trip I tried the roasted duck, and it was excellent. The serving size is gigantic...plenty for lunch the next day. I also enjoy ordering a few apps before the meal and all are great...check out the fried rolls, spring rolls and crab rangoons and chicken patay. All are excellent. On other occasions I have had tastes of the curry dishes and really enjoy them as well. Long story short, you may have a hard time deciding what to order, therefore you may over order, leave happily full, with a large amount of left overs. That was the food...The restaurant is very conveniently located for me, and is nicely decorated for what I would consider a mostly take out establishment. I have eaten in several times and it is really charming and nicely decorated. The staff is very friendly and they have a full bar as well as some specialty beers. I have yet to find another Thai restaurant in the Portland area to match the quality.

Doughboy’s Deli

Reviews:
ive been a long time customer of doughboys and the owners old location they used to have in portland, recently they changed their menu and are now nicking and diming all their customers. they ask you what kind of cheese you want and if its not the kind that normally comes on that particular item they charge you 50 cents, why bothering asking what you want, and dont even think about asking for oil on the side because again they will charge you 50 cents for ketchup size packet of oil, and the owners wife justified it by telling you they have no choice because everyone wants oil on the side, we live in maine and oil comes on an italian sandwich, long story short if you want to be charged extra for what you like ( with getting no extra) then this is the place to go, if you want it done youe way go to burger king... sorry you just lost a long time faithful customer
Delish veggie italian with extra Greek olives every time. They have super fresh produce, and a really really great veggie wrap which they put artichoke and roasted reds in! Love this place :) ps, the rolls are SO good.

Severino’s Variety

Reviews:
Great food, great people! Have been here for sandwiches several times since we moved to Westbrooklyn. The Italians are second to none and the meatball parm is out of this world. If you are looking for a family run, laid back place, then come to Severino's -- you will not be disappointed!
Crossposted from downeastkitchen.wordpres… Severino's Variety 300 Cumberland St Westbrook, ME 04092 Phone: (207) 854-9675 I realize there are several things I take for granted having grown up here Maine. I just assume that everybody gets to experience delicacies such as fresh seafood, red hot dogs, pier fries, or the simple joy that comes with eating a well-made Maine italian sandwich. As a little girl I remember visiting my Aunt Pat in Kennedy Park in Portland and as a treat we would wander up the hill to DiPietrio's store to pickup italian sandwiches for lunch. If I was a good girl I would get to pick some candy out of the nickel box they kept under the counter. I have many great memories of eating italian sandwiches with family and perhaps this is why I am so passionate of the subject of who makes the best. The italian sandwich is often incorrectly referred to by out-of-staters as a "grinder", a "hoagie", or a ham and cheese sandwich. These are similar inventions however they lack the specific combination of ingredients and vegetable cuts that are required to make a true Maine italian sandwich. A lot of locals will argue that Amato's sandwich shop makes the best one in the state. I have to wholeheartedly disagree. While Amato's does have decent food, they are a chain sandwich shop in Maine and for me this takes away from the authenticity of the sandwich. Their sandwiches lack that mom-and-pop flair and are very imbalanced when it comes to texture and flavor. There are just too many gosh darn tomatoes and the pickles overwhelming the overall flavor of the sandwich. Well I am going to let you in on a little secret folks. I know who makes the best Italian sandwich in the state. They are located in Westbrook, on the corner of Bridge St. and Cumberland St. Severino's Variety is a tiny little mom and pop store that has been a fixture in Westbrook as long as I can remember. Back in the day, local kids would head to Severino's and pay a quarter for a bag of sour pickle skins to snack on. Yum! This store is a little bit out of the way, but once you bite into your first sandwich from these people you'll be glad you made the trip. I believe Severino's Variety makes one of the best Italian sandwiches in the state of Maine for a number of reasons. Their sandwich has the right combination of boiled ham, American cheese, and properly cut fresh vegetables including tomatoes, green peppers, onions and pickles. The pickles are great and don't overwhelm the rest of the sandwich. All of this perfection is loaded into a soft, bulky and fresh submarine roll at an affordable price. A double ham and cheese italian is under $6 and could easily feed two people at lunch time. Severino's also has a couple of special shelves filled with homemade goodies. These are made by a woman named Donna. Donna is also the lady who usually makes the sandwiches behind the counter. My favorite treat is hands down the chocolate chip cookie whoopies. They are huge, but are perfect for splitting in half to share with a friend (or eat later). As a local Mainer, I really appreciate places like Severino's that keep the authentic Maine italian alive. This is why I will drive 15 minutes out of the way for a great sandwich from these people. I think you should too.
Sev's makes a great italian and there chocolate chip cookies with frosting are great! I'm not wild about their pizza but their french fries are super. Stop in!

good for quick breakfast. Plenty of room if you want to eat in. They have full breakfast options as well as the bagels you love
Here is my top 5 list regarding Mr bagel in Westbrook Maine: 1. Unlike the other mister bagel franchise stores in the area, this one actually sells eggs for breakfast. As a matter of fact, you can get breakfast anytime of the day. 2. There is plenty of seating and very clean bathrooms. 3. They have a wonderful selection of Green Mountain Coffee both hot and iced out all day. 4. They run a an excellent value lunch special on weekdays 5. They are without a doubt, the friendliest crew to work at any Mr bagel in the Greater Portland area.
This is the best Mister Bagel I've been to in the entire state and I've been to a lot. I am obsessed with Mister Bagel and the Westbrook one is the reason why. First, they're the only one I've been to that actually will fry your egg for a breakfast sandwich and it never takes long! All of the others just microwave it. You can get them runny if you choose to. They're only $4 which is great. They also have flavored Red Bull (my favorite flavors are strawberry pomegranate and blueberry pomegranate). The staff is always super friendly and helpful. I never wait long for to-go orders and the iced coffee is always readily available. The atmosphere in here is great and a super local spot, but welcoming to newbies. They have gluten-free bagels and muffins as well. Their regular muffins are amazing and you can ask for them grilled! Whenever I come home from school Mister Bagel is a destination.
