Lobster roll was so yummy! Great service, very friendly. Almost didn't go because of poor reviews, so glad we did!

It seems like there is a constant pattern at this establishment. Vulgar language , attitude and temper from the owner. It's a shame as a local resident , that I too will not return. I thought I would give it another shot but I would have rather been shot myself. By the way the owner turns in to Cujo you never know what to expect which is the number one reason to just walk past this establishment. There are so many other places that know how to treat their guest properly. The food is not any better than the disposition of the Owner / Barmaid. Patron beware.

I don't know where all these idiots are coming from But I found the staff very friendly. Had the onion soup and said it was yummy. Did see the owner he was loud but friendly it's a bar of course it's loud u morons.

We walked in and the "java the hut" woman and the belligerent bouncer made us feel unwelcome. All we wanted to do was come in for karaoke and the owners immediately sassed my family. After the horrific drinks and the sexual orientation discrimination, we decided to leave. I am happy to write this review to warn vacationers from wasting there time at this local dump.

Sorry to say I make better food than the food I was served. The special steaktips sauce is A1 steak sauce and the Maxwells chicken seemed like bottled marinara. I will not eat here again.

This is the first review of any kind that I have written and hopefully people don't find it petty. Went tonight with friends. Food was subpar but reason for poor review was poor drink and owners attitude. Looks like many reviews had an issue with the owner as well. I guess having a great location allows for the terrible attitude because people will keep coming in without knowing any better. Ordered a drink with "Stoli Vodka" infused with a blend of berries which sounded awesome after a day on vacation. I ordered it with lemonade and on first taste it was not good. I asked what kind of lemonade they used and was told powder mix. I could be wrong but why use top shelf vodka with powder mix. When I asked the waitress if I could swap it she went and checked and the owner said no it was fine. I had a discussion with the owner and apparently it was my fault for ordering a drink that way and I was 1% that orders it that way. For a $1 drink at his cost and $8 at mine I would want to make it right for the customer. I am in the service industry and would not want such a small thing to be such an issue for a customer. The poor attitude of the Owner is reflected in the staff. Our waitress was very nice and seemed almost embarrassed by the owner. She knew that exchanging the drink was the right path but had her hands tied. Again, I have never written a review but this guy was a total D-bag and I cannot wish success to such a person.

We rolled up with literally 30 people and wanted to drink. The only person who didn't have an ID was the bride who was 30 years old...unbelievable. Never going to come back to the city or the bar ever. Thanks for literally nothing. They called the cops on us for arguing with no one under 28 years old...

The one star reviews on this place are right on. Food is decent but the owner could care less about his customers. Refused to replace a drink that was made w powdered lemonade (who serves that??) saying it was the customers fault for making a bad choice! The customer is apparently never right here. Pay attention to these reviews and spend your dinner money where you are apparently appreciated!

Terrible service. Much better bars in the area. Piano bar for sure. Save your time. The owner is quite crazy and doesn't seem to care about customers. Very short temper.

I went to this dump with a party of 10 (5men/5women) and our party was verbally accosted by the OWNER. We ordered 10 draft beers. After he (the OWNER) had poured 3 we asked him to change the remaining 7 to bottled beers and 1 glass of Pinot Grigio. Having never tended bar I was obviously unaware of how arduous this task could be. The owner became incredibly unhinged and, frankly, downright frightening. He slammed the unused glasses against the bar and erupted into a profanity laced diatribe that was both racist and homophobic. While the women consoled each other, the men politely paid the tab and exited. I will never return again.

Went to "half time" (aka Happy Hour). Place has a weird odor in there -- stale? Dunno but I don't scare easily. Good thing because I loved the nachos! They weren't skimpy with the cheese or veggies. Beer was fresh.

  • Heather K.

The food here was actually really decent. We ate outside but it seemed like there was only 2 waitresses for the dinner shift, which slowed things down a bit. The waitress we had was extremely friendly. After I left I got home and realized that my card was charged twice. When I called to let them know the man who answered was extremely rude. Needless to say I'll be keeping an eye on my account regardless of his explanation.

  • Greg B.

The place serves a decent lunch and our waitress was friendly and efficient. Sure the building is run down and old. We had been stiffed by lousy service in several expensive Maine coast restaurants in our travels. It was nice to find a restaurant that doesn't pretend to be more than it is.

Unfortunately this is the only bar (besides Mainestreet) open in this town past 11pm. We were in town for a wedding and came here on a Friday night and then on Saturday afternoon to watch football. We tried to come back on Saturday night and they told us they were closed even though the bar was full of people. All of the employees at Maxwell's are unbelievably rude and act as if they're doing you a favor by serving you. They very clearly didn't want us there on Saturday afternoon even though there was no one else in the bar. They refused to turn the volume on the TVs on and continued to play their terrible oldies music. Avoid this bar if you have any other options.

  • GREG D.

Place is dirty and servers are unfriendly. The person who sits at the door is extremely rude. My friend bought a round of drinks and the bartender/owner was snippy with him when he went to pay because he purchased the drinks with another bartender instead of him. The TVs come in fuzzy and the sound system is mediocre.

  • Mario P.

Horrible. 11:30p at night and kids were in this bar. The owner/bartender would not make eye contact after I questioned him on it (The bartender was a real winner). I later called and they said kids are allowed in until 9p. It was a totally inappropriate environment for kids - I suspect the kids were related to the owner. Zero regard for customer service - and a total waste of time if you're looking for a cool atmosphere. I'd give this place 0.0 stars if I could. There are so many better places to go in ogunquit! I'm surprised the locals even let this place exist. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU VALUE YOUR DOLLAR!

  • Peg M.

The pub is what it is - dark. But we sat outside, ordered burgers and beers, and both were great. The server was attentive and friendly. Drawback was sniffing cigarette smoke from idiots reading the menu posted on the street. Good place to land for pub fare.

Place has potential but they fail completely with the opportunity. I have been here a handful of times and have always had a similarly bad experience. They are the only bar that does karaoke so we occasionally go to see if they go it together. The bouncer is one of the rudest women I have ever met in my whole life. She cards you on the way in to ensure you are 21 and spends the whole night ridiculing the customers for provocative words that are on the karaoke screen that the whole bar is singing. With a scowl or her face she loves to stock the customers around the bar, hovering in a very uncomfortable manner. I saw a gentleman order 5 drinks at the bar for his group and when the bartender asked him who they were for he joked "they are for me". The bartender proceeded to throw the customer out before he could explain. Even the DJ got ruder as the night went on and from his comments it seamed like he was pressured from the owner to have that stance. All in all the place breads bad customer service and they feed of tourists that don't know any better. Stay far away go to Hooks, Gypsys, The Front Porch, OVI, anywhere else.

Went to this place just off of the street. My girlfriend and I sat at the bar. The bartender was extremely friendly and efficient. The food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. We had the pulled pork sandwich and the buffalo chicken wrap. Would recommend this restaurant to others and will go back!

Been here a small handful of times, and each time ends with disappointment. The most recent visit ended abruptly when two middle-aged women complained to the owner, who is one of the rudest people in this town, of how I supposedly "cut" them in line for the MEN'S bathroom... how that even makes any sense in any world is beyond me. Yeah, ok pal, automatically assume that the straight 30 year old male wearing his work clothes is the root of the problem when different genders feel it is ok to swap bathrooms in your place of business. You are a horrible manager, a terrible judge of character and overall, just a rude person in general. Do not recommend in the slightest for anyone that is remotely close to my age, and male

  • Jeff H.

Well, as the name says, this is a pub - and what better to do in a pub than drink a beer. They actually had a couple beers on tap that I had not heard of, so that's a plus - which is why this got a 3-star and not 2-star review. My girlfriend and I ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer and it was so-so. So, if you want a cold beer - this is a good place to visit while in Ogunquit; if you're looking for food, I'd suggest one of the other numerous places in Ogunquit or Perkin's Cove.

    (3)
  • Amanda G.

Yikes - words could not adequately describe the disappointment experienced at Maxwell's. Unfortunately, there is no space here for negative stars. I've heard how warm and wonderful Ogunquit is and friends told me Maxwell's was a fun karaoke bar. Every experience in Ogunquit was as described with the exception of Maxwell's. We went tonight for a meal and to sing karaoke with several friends off on a weekend getaway. In all fairness, our waitron Kylie was very sweet and did her best, being the only waitron working in a full restaurant on a Saturday night. The marginal food was overlooked because of the good company. But the good company could not overshadow the lack of management and business savvy exhibited by the owner/bartender of Maxwell's: or perhaps better described as the bartender should never have been owner. One of my friends was a long time patron of the bar. On her last visit, poor service resulted in her not receiving a bill. After leaving Ogunquit, she realized she had not received a bill and contacted the bar owner arranging for payment. A repayment she made, with interest included, at her initiation. When she returned with us this weekend and spoke with him, he was rude to all of us, to a degree I'v never experienced from any business owner. His behavior was tantamount to that of the kids at a high school cafeteria table limited by excessive testosterone and recessive genes.

    (1)
  • Joey P.

Extremely rude. Wait staff made homophobic remarks. When asked to speak to the manager, the "manager" rolled his eyes.

Popped in for a quick beer and would never go back. First had a draft beer that tasted like buttery popcorn, they definitely don't clean the lines. I mentioned it too the bartender that the beer tasted off. He didn't seem to care and rattled off a bunch of other beers. My wife's wine tasted like sour vinegar. The bottle of beer I ordered had rust or bottom of the well marks on it. Don't waste your money here as they don't Seem to care about quality and cleanliness. I can't imagine the condition of the kitchen.

  • Allison D.

Maxwells was our misguided attempt to find authentic fish n chips. Literally three out of a party of four ordered fish n chips and they were thinly battered and looked like they were battered off site, frozen, delivered and thawed. Our service was awful The place wasn't even close to busy and the service was so slow. We got our food promptly but when it came time for a check, the service ground to a halt. We waited about ten minutes for a check, another ten for her to return for the credit card, and another fifteen for her to bring it back again. Just kind of a general bummer of an experience.

We had lunch here and the food was surprisingly GREAT. It looks like a kinda-dingy New-Englandy bar when you walk in, which it is, but our waitress was nice and attentive and the food was excellent! The french onion soup was really tasty, if a little overly-salty. The buffalo chicken wrap was really good - big portions here - we had a hard time finishing it, but it was good! The club sandwich was excellent and although it was a big portion, I managed to finish the whole thing! It's a cute place to hang out and people-watch. Very New-Englandy bar.

We were staying down the street and only picked this place because it was close. But it turned out really well. Firstt we asked our waitress Nicole to get the Bruins game on one of the multiple TVs. They were all showing football. We ordered drinks and aps. Then we realized that we were in front of the Karaoke stage and it was about to start. We asked if we could move and she could change yet another TV for us. The smile never left her face. She was gracious about the extra work and cheerful the whole time. Nicole was attentive and friendly and I would say she was key in our good time. Food is standard pub fare. My sisters liked the beer on tap something you put an orange in. My niece and I liked out mixed drinks. We bought T-shirts to commemorate our good time. Thanks Nicole

Great little spot in downtown ogunquit. my wife and I grabbed a bite to eat.. I had a tasty burger and coke slaw and the wifey had a delicious grilled chicken wrap. Fries were cooked perfectly. Drinks were good as well but Ice machine was down so wasn't able to order what I wanted. I will be going back when I get a chance. Nice sports pub. Bartender was obnoxious with his sports knowledge or taunting Yankees fans. Grow up.

  • Melissa D.

This place was AWFUL! DO NOT GO HERE! First of all, it is incredibly dark to hide the dirt and very sticky. The one star I will leave is for karaoke which was run by someone very nice and not associated with this bar. The service is rude and condescending. I ordered a vodka club soda and was given a vodka tonic. Mind you it was my second and my order hadn't changed. When I asked them nicely to have it fixed, they told me I would have to pay for another drink! Unreal! The menu is not better than the customer service. Nothing terrible, but there are just so many great places in the area, that you are better off going somewhere where the food is worth it and well prepared. I have spent my summers in Ogunquit for the last 21 years and this is the most disappointed I have ever been in an establishment. Plenty of great pubs and bars in the area- don't waste your time or dollars here.

    (1)
  • Nate C.

If you want good beer, plenty of sports on TV and good pub food then this is your place. If you want a mixed drink or a nice bottle of wine then, seriously, go ANYWHERE else in town...Maxwell's is a pub not some fancy bar...set your expectations accordingly. Everything we've had from the chicken parm sandwich to the onion rings to the crab stuffed haddock has been awesome. My wife and I have been going here for years and have always had great service, food and beer. Also, the karaoke is a fun time...check it out on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Gina P.

The manager/bartender who greeted us was very friendly. There were about four tables that had people at them and the wait for our food couldn't have been longer. We got a burger and a grilled chicken wrap which are probably the easiest things to make on the menu but we waited for forever. Our sprites were also flat. The food wasn't too bad, but I most likely will not return.

    (2)
  • Dave L.

Terrible. Go for the Karaoke ONLY. The owner is terrible, the food is terrible, the drinks are terrible.

    (1)
  • Francesca R.

I almost gave this place a "well, it's in a small town" pass with three stars, but really it's just a two-star kind of place. Sports bar pubs are simple places, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to be good places. The service was pretty bad - our waitress was just kind of dense and seemed afraid to answer our questions. My wine tasted like it was from a bottle that had been open for weeks. The clam chowder was pretty dissapointing for a town with so much great seafood. The thing about touristy resort towns is that mediocre places can thrive because their is so little repeat clientele. So hopefully you will be reading this before you go and make the decision *not* to eat here...although if you want to watch the Red Sox, there are about 1,000 TVs so a beer and a game of pool might be permissible.

    (2)
  • Brian E.

Let me start off saying the food was OK and fairly priced. That is all the positive things I can say. The bartender was the worst and he definitely had a very bad attitude and seemed to be looking for an argument. We had a party of four and we all agreed that he was nasty. I have never "stiffed" a bartender or wait staff before, however, as we were leaving I did inform him that our tip reflected his terrible attitude. Our tab was $69.75 and we left him a 25 cents tip. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE ! There are plenty of other great places to go in Ogunquit.

  • Molly P.

This place was alright. It served its purpose. We were on the hunt for a few cold beers and a lobster roll. I thought the roll was good ( I don't know if you can mess up lobster) and they had sweet potatoe fries. One of my favorites, so I was happy. I didn't think the service was terrible, just mediocre. Nothing really special about the place but the prices were not bad and we were seated right away.

Maxwells Pub is the best place in town to grab a beer and watch the game or people watch from the deck. There is a large selection of beers on tap and some good pub food too. You can choose either sit down service or eat at the large bar. TVs can be seen from either location. Parking can be tough as Maxwells is right down town but you can always find something in a few passes

    (5)
  • Patreesha G.

Stopped in for beer - it was just "OK". Bartender seemed to have to work hard and pretending he wanted to make small talk. Kinda had a bit of an attitude. Glad we passed on dinner.

    (1)
  • Erica S.

Though nothing amazing, Maxwell's delivered all that we needed. A plate of fried fish, fries, and veggies for me. A vegan burrito slathered in avocado for my boyfriend. A pool table for $1.25 a game. And amazingly bad 80s and 90s rock n roll in the background. The food was good, the service was friendly, and they have some yummy local beers on tap. For a small town pub, I thought this place was actually pretty good!

I cannot warn you enough to stay away from this place. A restaurant with close proximity to downtown, outdoor seating, spacious indoor seating and lots of televisions to watch the games should be a great place to frequent, right? Wrong. Our waitress (the only good thing about our visit) was extremely nice and sweet. The food was nothing special. I had been on the beach all day looking forward to the Cape Cod I was going to order with dinner. And then I did. It was served to me in a small glass that looked like straight cranberry juice. I am no lush, but I could not taste an ounce of vodka in this drink. Nor could my girlfriend. Coincidentally, the little boy at the table next to us ordered a cranberry juice with his dinner. It was the same color as mine. As both my girlfriend and I have worked extensively in food service we are loath to ever complain. But I was not about to pay that much for a small glass of cranberry juice. I very nicely told the waitress that my drink tasted very weak - to the point of not tasting any vodka in it at all. She smiled, apologized, and said that there was no point in her telling the bartender as everyone always complains about the weakness of the drinks and he refuses to do anything about it. She felt bad, but said her hands were tied. Well, that was all I had to hear. I went in to the bar, still miraculously polite, and stood at the empty bar - with my drink - as the bartender leisurely glared at me. He finally acknowledged me, after more than 5 minutes, and when I asked him if he could freshen the drink a bit as it was very dark / weak - he told me: "I'm sorry sir, it's against our restaurant's policy to serve double drinks to our patrons." I told him I didn't want a double drink, I just wanted a single shot of alcohol in my Cape Cod. I told him I've never complained about a drink in my life but that there was clearly no alcohol in my drink. He told me snidely, and intimating that I had a drinking problem, "If you need to have that much alcohol while you eat I'm sure there's many places in town that will meet your needs." I asked to speak to the manager or owner. That's when he explained to me that he was the owner. We tipped the waitress well, after she continued to apologize for her boss's behavior, and when we brought up our dilemma at several other establishments over the weekend, we were repeatedly told that locals know to stay far away from Maxwell's as it's known around town as a place that gets no repeat business and just tries to take advantage of the tourists. Well, consider me a tourist that learned his lesson. I hope my horrible experience can save you from making the same mistake. Go to Beachfire or Frills for a great drink, but stay the heck away from Maxwell's.

  • Marcus D.

I always had a good time here. We've been coming up for Fourth of July (remember when they had fireworks?) and Memorial Day for years. Karaoke night is hysterical, lots of laughs: Mary Beth, Kevin, Liz, Rory and Tara, even Liz's parents were up there singing the Beatles this year, among other mainstays. Beers aren't expensive, the waitstaff was always friendly to us - I've only gotten apps here, never had dinner - there are better places in town. We always end up here at night with our third degree burns, courtesy of some suntan lotion that's banned in 48 states and promises a Chernobyl red. I will be back next year.

My family went to Maxwells last evening and it was by far the absolute worst experience we have ever had! We went to have an evening of family fun doing Karaoke while on vacation. From the moment we walked in the door the bartender owner was extremely rude. Two of my children did not order a drink and we were told that if we didn't all order drinks we could not stay. Another daughter who was 20 yrs old and not of drinking age was extremely rudely told she had to leave. We planned to finish the drinks we ordered and leave as a family to go elsewhere. My daughter (27 years old) had a sip of my wife's glass of wine. The bartender immediatley came over and again rudely demanded her ID, which she promptly provided. I asked the bartended why he was being so rude and he took away my drink, dumped it out, threw our bill at us and asked us to leave. We were in total shock! Reading the reviews of Maxwell's on Yelp, TripAdvisor and Yahoo confirmed what we experienced..... Stay away from this place!

Grow up.

Terrible. Go for the Karaoke ONLY. The owner is terrible, the food is terrible, the drinks are terrible.

Stopped in for beer - it was just "OK". Bartender seemed to have to work hard and pretending he wanted to make small talk. Kinda had a bit of an attitude. Glad we passed on dinner.

The place serves a decent lunch and our waitress was friendly and efficient. Sure the building is run down and old. We had been stiffed by lousy service in several expensive Maine coast restaurants in our travels. It was nice to find a restaurant that doesn't pretend to be more than it is.

Went to "half time" (aka Happy Hour). Place has a weird odor in there -- stale? Dunno but I don't scare easily. Good thing because I loved the nachos! They weren't skimpy with the cheese or veggies. Beer was fresh.
