I've been rooting for a new Chinese place to open in this plaza ever since Jade Billows closed down. High expectations for this place even before it opened - glad it lived up to its predecessor. We came here on a weekday night and requested a booth. Very friendly staff greeted us as soon as we walked in. We ordered several of the Chef's Specials, including Rainbow Chicken, Crispy Beef, Dragon and Pheonix (creative name for our favorite General Tso's Chicken and Mixed Vegetables w/jumbo shrimp), and they all came out delicious, especially the Crispy Beef, which was the perfect combination of crispy and sweet. Other restaurants tend to over-batter the General Tso's, but CGB has a perfect handle on the ratio in our opinion. I'm so glad I didn't read the reviews before coming here. I see a lot of negative reviews, esp with people complaining about the pricing - the restaurant is on the higher-end scale (it's a proper sit-down place, not your average Chinese hole-in-the-wall joint), but the pricing was pretty justified, especially in comparison to the old place. Our $50 turned into a meal for two in the restaurant, along with enough leftovers to feed 2. We will definitely be back.

I was excited for a new Chinese restaurant to open in Cabin John. We gave it a try with sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, and a few appetizers. Overall, I hope this family run establishment ups their game and improves over time. This meal was really not that good. And they really need to think about their prices. This is not PF Chang's. This is neighborhood Chinese that is 30% more than other area restaurants. I paid that premium for the old Jade Billows because I felt the quality was there. The highlight was the pan fried pork dumplings. They were generously meaty and had a nice flavor and texture. Hot and sour soup is my reference dish. I order it every time. This soup was not all that hot and not all that sour. It was quite bland, though it had a nice assortment of tofu, egg, bamboo, and mushrooms. The spring rolls had obviously not been cook for this order. They were soggy inside and not all that crispy outside. They seemed like they had been sitting around for a while. Similarly, the sesame chicken did not have the expected crispy coating. It was more "once-crispy-gone-stale" in texture. The flavor was VERY salty and not at all sweet. This dish was flat out poor. All this said, I would still recommend that you try it out. This is their first week, so I am sure they are working some things out. I will be back in a couple months to see how it all turns out.

This place was great! Very nice decor and attentive staff. Full bar. Large portions on Chinese food and fresh, tightly rolled sushi. Their wonton soup is the best I've ever had. Flavorful broth and tender dumplings filled with yummy meat that does not look "mystery meat". Fast service if you need to get in and out on your lunch hour. Just let them know you're on a time limit. Crispy not greasy spring rolls hot all the way through and so delish! Reasonable prices for such large and fresh portions. My hubby brings home food from here once a week and take out is always spot on. Everything's in the bag, plenty of sauces and fortune cookies. He works next door and today we were in and out in less than an hour so he could get back on time. I've tried the Hunan chicken which was great with all white meat medium spice and perfectly done veg. The Kung Pao chicken is spicy but won't set you on fire with the perfect amount of crunchy peanuts. The fried rice is fresh and well seasoned. No old hard rice. Plentiful portions and I just love the orange slices they serve after dining in. Can't wait to go back! Great addition to Cabin John shopping center!

This review is based on the lunch I had ordered today. I ordered through the Eat24 App, which is convenient and it is great that this place offers online ordering. I waited about 15 minutes (average time for takeout) and came to pick up my food. When I walked in, I let the man (he was on the phone) know my name and that I ordered a beef and brocolli already, and I had to wait a few before the young lady walked out from the kitchen with other orders. If the man would have checked the ticket on the food that was already on the counter, he would have known I already paid online and could have handed me the food. The young lady that came out later was really nice, though! The portion was the same as other places, it came with a spring roll, and I paid the extra $1.50 to enjoy the egg drop soup. However, the food tasted a little sour, especially the sauce. It was also very watery at the bottom, and I liked my sauces thick. The soup was bright orangey yellow and thick, but it was pretty good. I might give this place another try, and order chef specialities, but like other previous posters have mentioned, I don't feel like the value of the lunch is worth the $11.

Some of the worst chinese food i've had in a long time. It was Christmas Day, so i'm sure they were busy, but that's no excuse for egg rolls that are still frozen in the middle. The other food came out hot, but nothing had much flavor or spice (even things that said they were spicy on the menu.) Speaking of the menu, it looks great... even has sushi and ramen on it... but none of those items were available. They also did not have any alcohol... apparently they are still waiting on their liquor license.

I appreciate that you are open to listening to your customers. I will absolutely give it another try and I think it's a great step in the right direction that your prices are now in line with other Chinese restaurants in the area. Hope to see you soon.

Decent food. I ordered takeout to pick up and it was ready on time. Large portions, but fairly pricey. Not the best Chinese food, but it satisfies a craving if you've got one.

We had avoided this restaurant when it first opened because of horrible reviews. However, the restaurant apparently underwent a change in ownership and we noticed some very decent recent reviews on yelp. So, we decided to give it a try. Since we do not eat meat, this review can only cover the veggie items on the menu. We had spring rolls to start, then my wife had the veggie lettuce wrap and I had the veggie delight. Everything we had ranged from good to very good, especially the lettuce wrap. I thought the veggie delight had too much broccoli and not enough other veggies, but the flavor was very good. Portions were very ample. Service was very friendly and prompt, although despite the restaurant being very sparsely occupied on a week night, the food took longer to come out than I would have expected- don't know how this place would be when crowded. The prices seemed in line with what other Chinese restaurants in the area charge. We will definitely give this place another try, especially since there are a lot of veggie options for us.

I had the Szechuan chicken which was really delicious. Plenty of chicken, no gristle. Plenty of veg with it. With the rice (if I had eaten it) it would have easily been a meal and a half for me. The egg drop soup was fine as well. The price is a bit higher it seems, but the food quality seems better so far as well. I may not go frequently, but I'll be back for sure. I had it delivery and it was still plenty hot when I got home 10-15 mins later. Hoping the rest of their dishes are as tasty!

Crispy beef is very good. Fried chicken is very good compare to other Chinese restaurant. The service is good. Would like to go back again.

Probably some of the least flavorful Chinese food that I have had. I was disappointed with our entire meal. We got wonton soup, egg rolls, fried rice, and broccoli with garlic sauce. The staff was very nice but they need to revamp the dishes. The wonton soup tasted like they dropped wontons into the broth from the egg drop soup. The egg rolls and fried rice had a brunt oil taste. The garlic sauce was just bland and I had even ordered it extra spicy. I was really looking forward to Chinese food tonight and now I am so bummed.

I've been here 4 times and had them deliver 3 times. I have never had a bad meal or bad service . The chicken fried rice is soooo good. I always order the bok choy with fish filet. They stir fry the two together. This is a great dish! Nice to have good Chinese in the neighborhood again.

Perfect neighborhood Chinese. Our whole family ate there and loved it. Moo shi pork, noodle soup, shrimp and a special of beef with King mushroom and asparagus were all great. The service was considerate and attentive, the dining room is attractive. I can recommend. We will return.

We've been looking for a new Chinese restaurant in the area and wanted to give this a try. I'm glad I didn't check yelp reviews in advance now that I see them, because we were pleasantly surprised. Ordered takeout on a weeknight and the food was ready quickly. We had moo shoo chicken and double delight - found both to be flavorful and good! Will definitely try again and hope to have another positive experience.

Kung Pao Chicken usually includes vegetables like celery and carrots. This was $15 for chicken and peanuts. I guess iit was "gourmet" because it included a dried hot pepper.

The good: service was attentive, the dining room was clean. My table had white table cloth, white napkin, white salt and pepper shakers and a white soy sauce dispenser. No flowers, no music playing. I was greeted almost immediately after I was seated. I was poured a glass of ice water, but no tea was offered. Tea is extra. I ordered szechuan chicken for dinner. My food came to the table in a matter of minutes. The portion was generous. There were lots of meaty pieces of chicken among the mound of shredded vegetables, served with a bowl of white rice. But the food had no taste. Even a sprinkle of soy sauce didn't bring out any flavor. My food was beyond bland. My dinner, without soup or tea, was almost $15 plus tip. Sorry China Gourmet Bistro, but I won't be back.

After reading so many negative reviews, I wasn't expecting much from China Gourmet Bistro (CGB), but I was pretty satisfied with the quality of the food here. I, too, am glad to see a sit-down Chinese restaurant in the Cabin John shopping center. Unlike some, I was only too glad to see Jade Billows leave. I found it to be typically Americanized Chinese food with no attempt at authenticity. I ordered a hot-and-sour soup, kung pao shrimp, and chicken w/Chinese broccoli (it's listed as beef with Chinese broccoli but I asked for the adjustment and they were fine with that). The soup needed a skooch more sesame oil and a dash of hot sauce. I couldn't stop eating the kung pao shrimp, it was that tasty. And the chicken and Chinese broccoli was also very good. One negative - CGB prices are indeed a bit high, even considering the neighborhood. The management might want to swing by the competition and see that other area Chinese restaurants are more economically priced. CGB has now been open for a few weeks now. They're still working out a couple of kinks, but they're darned willing to please. All the naysayers need to return and give these folks another try. I know I'm going back to try the salt-and-pepper fish.

Holy Sweet Sauce Batman! Had the crispy eggplant lunch special to go. There was so much sweet sauce, I might as well taken a spoon and a bag of sugar and ate that. FYI for you Jade Billows followers (I never really liked Jade Billows but did go there occasionally in a pinch) - Richie Lee, Jade Billow's owner is still around....kind of! His brother in law owns Far East in Rockville and Richie himself is often at the restaurant helping out. FYI #2, I've often said that no Chinese place tops Fu Shing. That still stands true after today.

Second visit. I really wanted to likr this place. But the food is just average, except for the Summer roll, which was un edible. The staff is very polite, but the food just does not fill the shoes of Jade Billows. Not sure how long this place will last. Tough competition on both sides. For the price, the Grilled Oyster, will give better tasting food for the money.

We finally decided to try China Gourmet Bistro last night. My wife had the grilled Teriyaki Chicken, which she thought was good. However, I was very disappointed with the Szechuan Beef. The waitress asked if I wanted it spicy, and I told her yes. But the rice almost had more taste than the beef did. Almost no taste at all. Our waitress also didn't seem to be very attentive. My wife's had already drunk her soda when the waitress took our order (standing right by the empty glass), yet the waitress didn't volunteer to refill it. We had to find another waitress to fill it. Also, there were no chopsticks on the table, but again we couldn't find our waitress. Ever tried to eat Sushi with a fork? It doesn't work. I was able to eventually flag our waitress down and ask for chopsticks - she brought ONE set and disappeared before we could tell her we needed two. We finally flagged down the manager and got another set. And at the end, she just brought our check. No asking if we wanted dessert; just toss the check on the table and once again disappear. We flagged down another waitress to get menus and order dessert. And at the end we had to ask the manager for our check. The worst part of this was the restaurant wasn't very busy. If it weren't for some of the worst service we've had in a long time, I would have given them three stars; although the food is a bit more expensive than other restaurants, this is Potomac, and I'm sure their expenses are higher. But they also have larger than usual portions and their mango cheesecake was delicious. We'll give this one another try at a later time; hopefully they can get their spices straightened out so the food has more taste.

Ordered carry out for the first time here and the Customer service was terrific and the food delicious. Thanks for coming to my neighborhood.

A new place! We were delighted - much better than we expected due to reviews. (Looks like just open a month) General Tsos Chicken was great! (Much to my husbands dismay as I kept eating off his plate) I had the Chicken in Garlic sauce and it was good too. The pork dumplings were good - I think the sauce is always what gives these flavor. Egg-rolls were better than most places - and I'm picky as I make my own. We'll be back!

I hope this restaurant gets its act together. Two iterations ago in this same location, another Chinese Restaurant did a land-office take out business. The food wasn't sensational but it was pretty good. The present restaurant has white-tablecloth service and an attentive staff but the food is, unfortunately, a step below mediocre and, like it's immediate predecessor, which also served inferior food, it is likely to go belly up if the food doesn't get significantly better. The clientele is certainly there for a higher quality product than the place currently provides.

Run, don't walk from some of the worst food I have ever eat. Carry out was pitched in the trash after a few bites--first, the fried vegetarian dumplings which tasted like breakfast pancakes with nothing inside. Then tried the ramen noodles which was much worse than the $1 bags @ Giant. They added canned corn and half of undercooked hard boiled egg. Who are these guys kidding? That's not even a dish in any of the countries' being represented here. Get outta town.

Can't tell you how happy I am that a quality Chinese restaurant opened in the Cabin John shopping Center. The Management there is so friendly and welcoming. The food is right on. I am an avid goer of, Chinese Gourmet Bistro and its always great. The owner is sweet and the restaurant set up is very nice and has plenty of room for larger parties and couples dinning. For anyone in the Potomac area craving quality delicious Chinese cuisine I strongly recommend giving Chinese Gourmet Bistro a chance.

I went back there with a few friends, this time we tried the special sautéed fish with ginger and scallion, shirmp drunken noodle , crispy beef, and hot and sour soup. It was delicious, the waiters are very friendly, and we enjoy it very much , we will be back very soon

My husband and I returned after our December 24 fiasco. It was a much better experience. The food was excellent and the service was very good. I never had to ask for my water glass to be refilled. I think the prices may still be a little high but they probably have a high rent to pay. The place was half full at about 6:30PM on a Saturday night. I hope that their business is going well.

Shocked... completely shocked... the last two chinese restaurants in here put out crappy food. We would drive past this place to go to shanghai village in bethesda but no more - really happy to have a good chinese food option in Potomac! Congrats China Gourmet Bistro for cracking the code - good food = return customers.

Bad service and tried to cheat me. Phoned in an order and woman on the phone was distracted and kept making me repeat order. Was paying no attention to call. When went to pick up gave cashier a 10% off coupon and she said she had deducted it already. However, the other older woman at counter then went over and ripped off the receipt from my bag and threw it out. When i asked to see it was clear that they had not given me credit and then argued with me saying they would need to recharge my card. Why would neighborhood place try and cheat me over $5.

Good to see someone put this new place on the board. Here is my experience -- walked in first few hours to find a few people getting takeout, a few people inside at tables. The staff were quite harried, understandable since their credit card system was down and they had to do the paper thing with mine. I ordered Green Curry, waited about 12 minutes, they brought it out, I walked out then someone came rushing after me saying they had made a mistake -- it was Red Curry, and was that OK? I said that's fine -- and was actually very impressed with the Red Curry when I got it home. Same cautions as the other reviewer -- they need to moderate the prices and are starting quite high and if there is any lowering of quality or service, they may be in trouble. Will try them again in coming week, sampling actual Chinese food this time. Fingers crossed, because we have had two previous Chinese restaurants there, including the longrunning Jade Billows, which by the end was really mediocre....more updates down the line!

Took over 40 minutes for the front desk to input carry out order into the computer while I waited. Eggroll was frozen although the hostess said they were hand made in the restaurant daily. The soup was bland and the chicken was gritty with bits of skin and bone. I returned after I picked up the carryout because order was not correct. Their prices are high. From the start of the carry out order to returning home with the correct order was 65 minutes. I live 5 minutes from the restaurant. I really hope they get it together. I miss Jade Bellows.

$2.00 for hot tea at a Chinese restaurant?! Really? In general I think the food is a little too pricey. Wonton Soup was pretty good but chicken and vegetables was just average.

Our family went here to celebrate our dad's birthday on Christmas Eve. Knowing that the restaurant only opened a week ago, I definitely realize that there is a learning curve to getting staff up to par. On a positive note, the food was very good. Unfortunately, they were completely overwhelmed with the Christmas Eve crowds and the service was fairly poor. We were a large group and the wait staff seemed to have a hard time keeping track of our order. We didn't mind waiting fifteen minutes for the waiter to take drink orders, but when half of our food never showed up after an hour we were very frustrated. We had to speak with managers multiple times to finally get all of our food (our waiter seemed to have disappeared for most of our meal). Since the food was so good I'm looking forward to coming back in a few weeks when they hopefully will have moved beyond "start-up" mode.

I went here for lunch and thought it was just a regular, generic chinese restaurant. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit. The atmosphere is nice, and the restaurant still has that "new" feeling. Besides chinese food, they also have sushi and ramen and udon! I got the chicken steak udon (~$10) and it was really good. The soup base was great and I drank it all. Nothing feels better than a full, warm stomach of good food. The waitress was attentive and came by often to refill my drink. I wouldn't say this place is americanized chinese food, but rather more authentic chinese/asian food. I'm definitely going to come back and try out their other entrees. Hopefully future visits will be as great as the first one.

It is nice to see a new Chinese restaurant in the cabin john shopping center. The service was good but unfortunately I can not say the same thing for their food. I ordered Pad Thai and wonton soup. My bad, don't order Thai dish in a Chinese restaurant! However, I am going in again to try a more traditional dish before crossing them off my list.

Ordered californian roll, veggie spring rolls and spider roll to go. The cashier said come back in 15 minutes. When I returned cashier said another 5 min. After 5 minutes I asked where the food was since the restaurant was empty. How can it take so long? She went back to the kitchen. She came out and said another 20 minutes. She then went back and said they are filling the order now. I said this is ridiculous for the amount of food I ordered. I asked if there was a chef in the kitchen and she said no he left and another was filling in. I immediately asked for my money back. She went back and said the food is not there so okay you have your money back This restaurant made me wait 25 min for nothing! Be honest and upfront with customers. If you don't have a chef, don't take the order or say it might be a long wait. Really don't know how this restaurant will survive . You think they would have offered free egg roll or something to get me to come back! Good luck to them!

Like other reviewers we too were glad to see a new Chinese restaurant in the area. I had not enjoyed the prior place so we were looking forward to giving this a try. We went mid-afternoon for a late lunch; it was pretty empty. The staff was friendly and attentive. I had wonton soup which was fine, nothing to write home about but OK. Husband had hot and sour soup which we try everywhere and don't find too many worth getting twice. This was good -- unlike another reviewer we found it hot and sour as it should be, and quite flavorful. We had pan-fried dumplings which were good (only 4 to an order though!) and the dumpling sauce, which we're very particular about, was good if a tad sweeter than we'd like. We also went to order the Sha-cha Chicken and the waiter asked if we wanted the appetizer version which we said yes to. What we got was chicken skewers with a bland peanut sauce sprinkled on it. This was the worst dish. I cannot say if the dinner version of Sha Cha Chicken would be worthwhile as I don't think we got the same thing at all. Very plain, dry and uninteresting. Lastly we had Drunken Noodles, which were very good (well prepared, fresh ingredients, bright colors) but not spicy at all. We'll go back.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
