I ate my entire sandwich in the parking lot!! Lol. Everything was delicious and fresh. Customer service was good too. I was given a piece on beef to taste which forced me to order one for my husband as well. I recommend this place over Chaps on Pulaski hwy!!

I typically wouldn't have chosen to eat here but it's so close to our house it seemed like a must. I have to say it was pretty good. My only complaint is that their side of bbq sauce is so small and they charge for extra. I would recommend if you're in the area.

The pit beef sandwiches here are simply amazing!! I love them. They are very delicious and tender and just melt in your mouth. I don't know about any of their other food but by all means, GO here if you want a good pit beef sandwich. I order it with mayo and raw onions. Yum!!

My first go around with pit beef as I'm new to the Baltimore area. The food was great and the price was right. Being so close to home I will absolutely be a repeat customer. The meat was flavorful and juicy. Sides were plentiful and delicious.

I just notice this place here tonight on the way to get the kids some pizza. I have to say it was a great experience. I love how they give you a sample of what your getting. I had the pit beef medium rate with tiger sauce. It was very tender and a good portion for the price. The roll they use was very soft and delicious. Also the customer service was good. Overall a great experience I will visit again.

Really enjoyed this place, can't wait to come back to try their beef. I had the breaded fish today and it was excellent.

Best pit beef around ! Huge portion for decent enough price. Better by far than that place near 70 and rolling road. Pork and beef are both excellent!

I was very disappointed. I got the BBQ pork with sides of cole slaw & mac n cheese. The meat was flavorless. Didn't taste like it had even been salted or peppered. The sauce was okay but not enough. Should have got tiger sauce. Mac n cheese also very bland. I'm from Baltimore but never experienced pit beef. Guess I'm used to TX BBQ now. Thought it would be smoked. Cole slaw was okay. Sweet tea was very good. I'll be glad to get back to Dallas and get a beef brisket from Dickey's.

Go Here! I also was drawn by the free samples sign. It was fantastic. No seating, but I was getting it to go anyway. I got a pit turkey, fries, and root beer for $10. The sandwich was more than enough for me to have for two meals and a generous portion of fries for a size medium. Staff was very nice. Kitchen looked very clean also. I'll definitely be coming back.

Pretty good place overall. I had the large pit beef platter which includes the pit beef sandwich and two sides. Good amount of food for the price so that was a plus. The beef was well cooked for the most part but a bit dry and a little too salty. The tiger sauce was a good touch (horseradish and mayo). The sides I had were coleslaw and baked beans. The coleslaw was a solid 3/5 which means it was decent but not the best I've had. The baked beans were great though, 5/5. Others may disagree but I think Chaps has the better meat.

It's no Pioneer, but it's less than a mile from where I live. And, it's open when I'm looking for dinner. Plus, it's actually pretty tasty. I love their pit beef. I have to admit, that's all I've had there, and the cheesy chili fries. Both are delicious. The price is right, it's super convenient and when I'm craving pit beef at 8pm, I can get it. I frequent this place.

Got the large platter (8.99 and it comes with two sides). A great deal because you get so Much food. I chose the pit beef and added onions (0.50) and ordered a side of chili cheese fries and Mac and cheese. The chili cheese fries has a great balance of salt and a sweet taste (sweet subtle taste). The chili has some sort of ground meat and is the best chili cheese fries I've ever had. The Mac and cheese was alright (the cheese was too runny for my taste). The pit beef was amazing! I didn't know how I wanted the beef cooked, so the employee recommended medium. He brought out a slice of pit beef for me to try (excellent customer service!) the pit beef on our sandwich was super moist and delicious. Their Anjou sauce mixed with barbecue sauce was a perfect balance on the bun. Will definitely be back!

I've been passing it by just because I was on the other side of the 40 or I was in a hurry. I'm glad that I decided to stop. The meat here is much better than the other pit beef spots in the area. The beef is moist, tender and quite flavorful compared to others that I've had. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. You get a hefty serving so if you plan on dessert afterwards, then don't finish your order... unless you have enough storage space in your stomach of course. Good price for all that you get. There is parking available and if you're not in a rush, there's a sign that says you can take your order and have a seat in Sorrento's, next door.

Good roast beef for the money. Meat was sitting in a pan of juice. Cook took it to the slicer gave me a sample of the medium which was well cooked(in a good way) I ordered the large which was on special for $8 bucks and change. Sitting in the pan of juice probably took away from the smoky flavor The roll was huge and fluffy and fresh. Probably a Maranto roll. Tiger sauce onion(which he insisted ) and BBQ sauce. BBQ sauce was watery but let the flavor if the meat stand out. Despite the lack if smokiness the meat was plentiful and it took care of my beef fix. The fries and coleslaw were excellent Turkey looked like the cheap stuff. Overall. Good roast beef at an excellent price

A large yellow sign proclaiming FREE SAMPLES caught my eye as I was driving and I had to go there. I made the right move. I tried their slice of pit beef. It was tasty, although a little drier than I was expecting. Nonetheless, i ordered a large pit beef platter with the works (lettuce, tomatoes, tiger sauce, bbq sauce, onions) and 2 sides (chili cheese fries and coleslaw). Another smart decision! The chili cheese fries were awesome! The fries themselves were fried in peanut oil and tasted similar to the ones at Five Guys...only it was covered in delicious chili and gooey cheese. The coleslaw had a hint of horseradish but wasn't overwhelming. It was a nice cool, sweet coleslaw. Perfect compliment to the tangy bbq sauce from the pitbeef. As for the pitbeef sandwich, HUGE is an understatement. There was so much pitbeef on this thing that they couldn't smoosh it between two buns. Instead, they piled the meat on top of the two buns such that you couldn't even see the buns. It was then doused in sweet tangy bbq sauce (but not too much). I'd say there was at least half a pound of pitbeef piled high. EVERYTHING on that plate was working together in harmony. The entire thing felt like 2lbs of food. Best of all it was only $8.99!!! This was my first pitbeef experience and it was GREAT!

I go to Kirkwood a lot but they have a habit of taking an extended holiday vacation. Why can't there be a temporary staff to keep the place open during the holidays?

I will admit, that I know a lot about barbecue. Or at least think I do. But I admit i dont know much about Pit Beef, but i do know a DARNED GOOD SAMMICH when i taste it. And this place has darned good sammiches. I actually fell upon this place by taking a wrong turn coming back from a jobsite. And ive read quite a bit about pit beef, and it differences from barbecue as we know it. And figured I'll give it the old college try. I ordered a large sammich with salt, pepper, onions, & horseradish. As it seams my baltimore resident friends recommend those toppings. The beef was nice and rare, and had a good char on the outside, and the free sample they gave me was tender, moist, and downright delicious. The sammich bun itself.. seemed a little spongy for my liking. But it didnt kill the sammich. The onions were shaved super thin, so they didnt over power the meat, and there was the perfect amount of horseradish to give a little kick to your nose, but not tear you up. All in all, this was an awesome sammich. I did not have any sides, because the sammich was pretty large. As i had ordered... a large. Thank-you Kirkwood for actually giving me a large sandwich. I'll be back. I dig this place.

This place is carry out only, with seating next door in the Sorrento's. Staff was very attentive and friendly. SX and I ordered to-go. We had pit beef sandwiches with tiger sauce, a bbq pork sandwich, and an order of gravy fries. We thought they were quite yummy, but the pit beef sandwich was definitely better than the bbq pork sandwich (which wasn't too bad, just too much sauce on it for our taste). The food was a bit cold by the time we made it back home, but still satisfying. They accept credit cards, which is useful. _________________________________________ UPDATE: Closed until February for the holidays and the owner broke his leg. :( SX caught the bug for pit beef sandwiches with onions and tiger sauce.

4.5 stars would be more accurate, but I'll round up based on the sandwich. The pit beef is awesome. In this department, Kirkwood kicks the ass of Chaps, which is a tourist trap and serves an inferior product. The meat was served at the perfect doneness (medium rare in our case), and they added just the right quantity of tiger sauce and raw onion. Really great sandwich. The baked beans also were superb and the coleslaw, once we added a little extra salt, was pretty good as well. I don't know what they do to the mac & cheese but I don't feel any need to have it again. Weirdly, it doesn't taste like cheese - it almost tastes to me like they cook it in chicken stock, or something. So give that a miss. The fries are hand-cut and while they suffer from the usual problem of fries in most pit beef places (I think they're fried at too low a temp or something since they're never crisp), I did eat them all, so I can't complain too much. Final takeaway: go to Kirkwood (or Pioneer), not Chaps.

Been here twice & will probably keep going back. Wondering what this tiger sauce is that other ppl are mentioning... hmm next time! 1st time I got the bbq pork, my guy got the pit beef.... pork was good, beef was delicious, so yesterday when we went back we both got beef. It's cool that he gives you a sample of it first. I'm not a pit beef master, but I got mine medium, his was med well, and we could clearly tell the difference! :) It was so much beef that I had to eat each half of my sandwich open-faced! The beef by itself tastes great, but I'm a more the merrier girl when it comes to sandwiches so I got it with lettuce, tomato, & both onion & bbq sauce on the side... delish! I'm surprised ppl talked about how friendly they are because both times I felt like they were just kind of blah, but not mean at all! Yesterday I asked the guy who makes the sandwich, "how's the mac n cheese?" He shook his head no, and I laughed and thanked him for his honesty... he gained some brownie points in my book with that one. So I got the greens & slaw, greens seemed a bit saltier than the first time but not bad, and I liked the slaw... I thought I tasted a hint of horseradish.. mmm! I'm not a fan of their fries.... (they're that type of fry you see every now and then... darker, not crispy... maybe the grease is old? ... kind of hard to explain, but I think they're a love or hate type...) Their potato salad was surprisingly delicious! I don't like potato salad from most places (my mom makes THE BEST potato salad so I'm picky) but this one was pretty darn tasty! All in all I recommend it!

I am not a Baltimore native nor do I pretend to know "pit beef" like my neighbors do. But I've lived in Balto for six months now and I've visited many Pit Beef shops. Kirkwood is the best -- on numerous levels. First and foremost, the bottom round Pit beef is always phenomenal. Edges are seasoned and black; inner pieces are pink and juicy. With their fresh red onions and hot-sauce (or horseradish), nothing else is needed for an amazing meal. Yes, the fries are tasty. But this Pit beef can stand alone. The second reason why Kirkwood rules is simple: their kitchen is incredibly clean. Go to places out on Pulaski Highway or down in Locust Point and you'll find a dark, somewhat questionable Pitbeef kitchen. Although it has no seating, Kirkwood is clean, efficient and customer-friendly on every level. BE AWARE: They close after Christmas for a one-month Winter break.

Ate here a few weeks ago to see how the place stacked up to some other pit beef stands. No seating, but they had some great prices. I ended up getting a large pit beef sandwich with 2 sides - gravy fries and mac and cheese. Both were excellent and the food was way more than enough. I wasn't a huge fan of their BBQ sauce and thought it was pretty sweet, but it was still good nonetheless. Be warned that when you get a sandwich from here that you will need napkins. Each time I have eaten here the sandwich has had so much beef that it was pouring out from all sides.

Go directly to Kirkwood! Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. I have been meaning to comment on Kirkwood for a long time. This review of the food is long overdue! I don't care if I already had dinner or it is out of my way, I stop here and get a large pit beef and fries to take home with me. I cannot comment on anything else, but why would I? I am here for Kirkwood's namesake sandwich. I eat it plain medium rare to get the full effect of the awesome and tender smoked meat. If I was on death row, this would be one of my last meal requests!!! The fries, when doubled fried (well done?) like Superman said, are so good and stay crispy even after time spent on the ride home. You get the sample slice to see if your pit beef is how you like it. I think they do that to get your tastebuds going and order an extra sandwich! Hey, it works for me... To take the words of a fast food place "I'm lovin' it !!!"

This is my new favorite pit beef spot vs the others in a 20 mile radius, even Chaps. The meat is much tender and the portions are huge. Pit beef with tiger and BBQ sauce. The fries seem to fried second time like they should be and comes out crispy outside and moist inside. The people are friendly too.

Meh. Just go to Pioneer since its jyst about a mileaway. So much better. Also had those nasty puffy wheat rolls that taste and feel like a wet kitchen sponge.

Carry-out only, but this place is so good. Maybe not as good as Pioneer Pit Beef (but not by much) but it's in a nicer area and a cleaner place. The fries are tasty and the hot sauce gave the beef a nice kick. Good place to try pit beef for the first time.

hmmm....am I missing something? I feel bad giving this review, but the place was just NOT good. First of all, when I was about to order, I guess we gave the impression that we were first timers. When I asked about the BBQ beef, the gentleman working there pretty much made a face and said "I wouldn't reccomend that. Try the pit beef." Of course, I was then left to wonder-- what is wrong with the bbq beef!? SO I gave the pitbeef a try. Meat was tender, which was nice. But the sauce tastes like mumbo sauce at the asian carryouts I've been to. It was strange. The sides I tried -mac n cheese and fries- were mushy and bland. Actually, they were inedible. I ended up throwing out my entire meal and getting a slice of pizza from the italian place next door.

Please understand I was forced to give 1 star. I would really give it NONE! This place is by far no Pioneer Pit Beef no matter how much they try to steal their awesome idea. They are more expensive for way tasteless meat. We drove to pioneer pit beef to find they were closed for the Thanksgiving weekend. The next steps we took for food were the worse. We drove to Kirkwood and even after my husband got his free slice of beef he still sadly go the sandwich. The construction of the sandwiches is way wrong also. I ordered BBQ pork w/bbq sauce and slaw and I had a mouth full of jalapenos and other peppers from the bbq sauce. The slaw should be called sugar slaw. We regretably ordered gravy fries. Who drowns their gravy in vinegar? Oh that would be Kirkwood. We threw out the entire order of fries less the 3 or 4 we forced ourselves to eat. I threw out almost half of my sandwich after I said I can't force anymore. My husband threw out a nice bit of his too. As for a better or nicer neighborhood since Kirkwood is located as part of a strip mall and then there is more shopping available all around then yes it tends to make places seem nicer as opposed to what looks like a run down house sitting on a corner like Pioneer...if you are looking for your adult entertaining needs to be met then yes this is a nicer area since there is an adult entertainment store located behind Kirkwood. As for my family we will NOT be eating at Kirkwood again. I do thank Kirkwood for prompting my very first Yelp post.
